“A Season For Wishes” Moves To The Big Screen Annual Fundraiser To Be Held At Penn Cinema BY ANN MEAD ASH
Lititz United Methodist Church members presented the live Nativity that was part of the 2019 Simply Christmas celebration. This year’s live Nativity will be held outdoors.
Members of Lititz United Methodist Church and Girl Scout Troop 70246 bagged goodies for attendees at this year’s drivethrough Simply Christmas event on Dec. 13.
atti Bergman, facilities and events manager and Simply Christmas coordinator at Lititz United Methodist Church (LUMC), 201 Market St., Lititz, knows that encouragement is especially important during a pandemic. A press release Bergman distributed for the church begins with the words, “Now more than ever, people need a healthy dose of hope and love.” “Now more than ever, people need a healthy dose of hope and love.” In response, LUMC will host its annual Simply Christmas Celebration as an outdoor drive-through
P
event on Sunday, Dec. 13, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Simply Christmas is an old-fashioned celebration of the birth of Christ. Since the beginnings of the annual event in 2011, LUMC has endeavored to invite neighbors in the community to join in a celebration of the Savior’s birth that focuses on taking time away from the hustle of the season.
“Now more than ever, people need a healthy dose of hope and love.”
“It truly is meant to be an evening of giving to our neighbors in the community, just as Christ’s love is free to all who receive it, “ said Bergman, who noted that the supplies and staffing for the event are gifted to the community by members of LUMC. This year, organizers of Simply Christmas struggled with ways to provide a safe event that met the requirements of COVID-19 restrictions. “Although the doors will be closed, hearts will be open,” the press release stated. The event has been moved outdoors and has been transformed into a drive-through, but the intent is still
to give those who attend an experience that centers on the wonders of Christmas. Attendees will be guided through each station while remaining in the comfort of their own vehicle. The evening would not be complete without a live Nativity. While smaller this year, the live Nativity will be staged outdoors where all can view it. Traditional Christmas music will be presented throughout the evening by Eric Fisher and Breanna Hiller. Bergman said that while the current health situation gave organizers pause, they found they were

Simply Christmas A Celebration Of Hope And Love
Lisa Kalinowski, founder of CoJoMotion Dance Company of the Lititz Academy of Dance and the organizer of “A Season for Wishes,” did not believe it would be possible to hold the fundraiser during the COVID-19 pandemic this year. “A Season for Wishes” is a dance revue that has raised more than $360,000 over 15 years for Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware, and Susquehanna Valley to help grant the wishes of seriously ill children. “We knew we couldn’t do a regular live show, and people were expecting we just wouldn’t do anything this year,” reported Lisa. Lisa’s husband, Tony, kept saying, “We have to find a way to do this.” Tony reached out to Penn Cinema, 541 Airport Road, Lititz, about partnering to show the program. Representatives of the cinema said

“Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2020? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.
Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems
The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.
Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.
Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.
More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.
Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.
MHALC Shares New Website
And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.
After months of work by many, Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) has launched a new website. It offers information on programs and services available through MHALC, including multiple ways to help connect community members with mental health services, medication assistance, Compeer services, and support groups. The new website may be accessed at www.mhalancast er.org.

Lititz Meals On Wheels - Still Running On Volunteer Power BY ANN MEAD ASH
George Nickel, president of the Lititz Meals on Wheels board, also sometimes serves as cook in the Lititz Church of the Brethren (COB) kitchen where the meals are prepared, and he is not reluctant to pepper his speech with culinary terms. “The secret to our sauce is that we are all volunteer,” proclaimed Nickel of the organization that serves more than 30,000 meals a year at a nominal per- day fee for each client. Up to seven volunteers meet at 7:30 a.m. on Mondays through Fridays at the church, located at 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. “ We pack the cold lunches and the hot lunches,” said volunteer team leader Jean Steffy, who noted on that particular day the hot meal included beef chili, a corn muffin, and glazed carrots, and the cold meal featured a spring mix salad, a ham salad sandwich, cheese, a banana, and milk, among other items. The organization serves about 60 clients in the Warwick School District. Volunteer drivers handle the four delivery routes. Volunteers, especially those willing to cook, are needed. Lititz Meals on Wheels dates back to 1973, when three local women - Polly Eshleman, Jane Reynolds, and Arlene Shannon - approached Lititz COB about using the kitchen to feed 25 clients. “They saw a need to feed the community,” said Nickel. Nickel’s mother-in-law, Evelyn Helter, did not work on Mondays, so she volunteered to cook, something she continued to do regularly for the next 30 years. Later, Nickel’s brother-in-law became a cook. When Nickel retired from computer work in 2012, he joined the volunteer forces. “I came here to cook and shop,” said Nickel, who because of his background was quickly drafted to transfer recipes and menu plans to computers. Recipes for only 20 to 50 people were expanded and moved to computer files. Menu plans that were set for about a month were adjusted
to more than two months. “We vary the menu,” said Nickel, who noted that favorites of the 112 rotating dishes include roast beef, spaghetti and meatballs, and crab cakes. “We find a menu we can scale up and tailor to our clients,” said Nickel. “We have added 50 good recipes in the past seven years.” Menus are submitted twice yearly to the Office of Aging, and food and the kitchen facilities are inspected. “We have to have balanced menus with the right amount of protein and carbohydrates and not too much sugar,” said Nickel, who noted that daily requirements for Vitamin C and calcium are also checked. Food, which is bought in bulk for cost effectiveness, comes from a number of sources in the area. Lititz Meals on Wheels is a ministry of Lititz COB. Nickel said he is thrilled to work in a

Hurst is a professional artist and author from Lancaster County. Growing up in a large Old Order Mennonite family, she spent most of her time teaching
herself art between chores on the family dairy farm. She now owns and operates the Barnyard Art Studio & Gallery on her 40-acre farm in Lancaster, and she travels to share her stories of faith and freedom through chalk talks. Classes are provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-3612613 or Veronica at 717626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule. Lisa has also promised a number of surprises throughout the event. “The emphasis is on following guidelines and being safe,” said Lisa. “It may look a little different this year, but the love behind it is the same. It’s going to be amazing.” Past shows have raised more than $30,000, but this year, Lisa will be happy if the event raises enough to grant one child’s wish. “I told the (dance students) they should feel so good about any amount that comes in,” said Lisa. Lisa quickly mustered 27 dancers to record the show in a large studio at Aurora Films at Rock Lititz. As a result, the 16th annual “A Season for Wishes” presentation will be a pre-recorded film shown at Penn Cinema on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 9:45 a.m. While social distancing guidelines made it impossible to rehearse or perform certain dance numbers, Lisa adjusted choreography for some dances. Styles for the 15 numbers will range from tap, jazz, and ballet to modern and hip-hop. Many of the Rockette-style kicklines were not possible, but Lisa noted that on one number she spaced the dancers apart with their hands on their hips so they could still do the kicks. Familiar dance numbers that will be featured this year include “Santa Baby”; “Do You Hear What I Hear?”; “The Little Drummer Boy”; “Hot Chocolate”; “Where Are You, Christmas?”; “We Need a Little Christmas”; “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”; “Arabian” from “The Nutcracker”; “Hip

It is not often that a high school sports season can be summed up in one word, but 2020 is not a normal anything. And the one word that perfectly sums up the fall high school sports season in 2020 is ... COVID. From the fear and worry about a canceled season over the summer leading into a condensed regular season that was chopped apart with various postponements and outright cancellations. The 2020 fall season was like no other. Need proof? Look no further than the three Warrior programs that navigated the crazy regular season with enough success to land in the also condensed district playoffs only to have COVID prematurely end their season. Two of those three teams had their playoff hopes dashed without stepping between the lines with the field hockey team the first to suffer through the experience. The Lady Warriors finished second in Section One with a 7-3 mark, missing out on the condensed L-L playoffs despite being the only Section One team to knock off eventual league champ Penn Manor. The final COVID push came with the announcement of the District 3-3A bracket. Warwick posted a solid 9-3 overall record that slotted them eighth in the final District 3-3A rankings, but the Lady Warriors were bounced from the District 3 bracket anyway. As per the PIAA agreement, District 3 and 7 are combined into a sub-region for the PIAA tournament; most years that is not an issue, but in a COVID year that meant the eighth and final spot went to District 7 champ State College, leaving Warwick on the outside looking in. “I am very proud of our team this year. They fought very hard all season,” said head coach Bob Derr. “For us to go 7-3 in section play and 9-3 overall is amazing. All the credit goes to the girls. They trained and worked hard and just believed in themselves and the concept of team. It takes everyone working together to reach their goals and play as a team.”
A week after the field hockey team had its season prematurely ended, the soccer-playing Lady Warriors experienced a similar fate. Thanks to a five-game run that closed out the regular season, Warwick’s 6-3-2 overall record was just enough to get the Lady Warriors into the District 34A playoffs. “I’m proud of my players for the season they had,” said head coach Wendell Hannaford. “The start of the year we weren’t necessarily getting the results we wanted. The girls knew how good they were and how successful we could be. They worked hard, trained well, and went on a huge five-game win streak that got us into districts.” Unfortunately, that district berth came with a spike in COVID cases at the school forcing the Lady Warriors to withdraw from the District 3-4A bracket before ever stepping foot on the postseason pitch. The forced withdraw left Hannaford disappointed. “The end of the season was tough. There’s really no other way to put it. It’s still a bit raw and fresh, but in time, the girls will be able to look back on the season and be proud of what they accomplished. It’s important we remember to be grateful for getting as much of the season in as we did.” The third and final Warrior squad to fall victim to COVID was the football team. The gridiron version of the Warriors was able to finish one playoff game before things ended with the 14-12 semifinal victory over New Oxford capping an 8-1 2020 record. A week later, the season was over as was the shot at the team’s first-ever District 3-5A title. Despite the cruel ending to the season, the Warriors were able to rack up a perfect 7-0 regular season, giving Warwick their first solo section title in over 40 years. The undefeated regular season also included two important milestones, with the program surpassing 400 wins and head coach Bob Locker eclipsing 100 career wins.

CROSS-COUNTRY The cross-country team narrowly missed COVID-related issues, allowing Anna Martin and Ella Hartel to take part in the PIAA-3A Championship race. Martin, a senior, posted the 21st best time (20:02) while Hartel, a freshman, finished 26 seconds and 12 places later. The pair led the Lady Warriors to a 7-3 regular season finish that ended with Warwick nipping McCaskey, 62-63, in the L-L Championship Race to claim the girls’ team title. Martin finished second in that race with Hartel taking sixth. Grace Rudder (13th), Sidoney Freeman (16th) and Alexa Wenger (25th) rounded out the championship team for the Lady Warriors. Between the L-L and PIAA championships, the Lady Warriors took part in the District 3-3A championship. There they finished second to Northeastern with Martin earning her PIAA bid with a seventh-place finish. Hartel claimed her PIAA spot with a 13th-place run. On the boys’ side, JH Mertz repped the Warriors in the District 3-3A Championship Race with the junior wrapping up his season with a 65th-place finish. Mertz earned his district berth with a 25th-place finish at the L-L championship with Jake Forgione just missing out after finishing 30th. VOLLEYBALL “We had a great season,” said first-year girls’ volleyball head coach Megan Obetz, adding, “It can be attributed to the attitudes of these amazing young ladies. They made coaching in a pandemic an amazing experience.” Warwick opened with two straight wins but alternated wins and losses from there, leading to a 7-6 campaign. The result was a third-place finish in the Section One standings and a 15th-place finish in the final District 3-4A rankings. Obetz looked back on her first season as a positive one. “I was proud of my team’s resilience in the face of many challenges and uncertainties,” the coach stated. “I was also inspired by their passion for the sport and their drive to get better in each practice and game. Finally, the senior leadership inspired our young players to take pride in the program in a way that will help us countless years to come.” GOLF The golf team ripped through the 2020 season, posting a 16-4 mark with all four losses coming at the hands of eventual league champ Manheim Township. The season came to an official close on Sept. 12 when six Warriors traveled to Meadia Heights Golf Club for the L-L Championship. Zach Stoyer just missed the district cut, finishing in a five-way tie for 18th place, leaving him as the first district alternate. Tyson Mitchell was also part of the five-player logjam, with his season ending as the third district alternate. Brant Bomberger
(T-26th), Connor Evans (49th), Nick Reedy (55th) and Brayden Gregory (63rd) were the remaining Warriors at Meadia Heights. TENNIS The girls’ tennis team posted a mild rebound from an 0-3 start, finishing with a 3-5 mark. “The team was enthusiastic as we made the best of an unusual situation, to say the least,” said head coach Ron Wanner, “and we continued to improve as the season progressed. With much of the team returning next year, we’re looking forward to a competitive season in 2021.” BOYS’ SOCCER Most would not consider a 4-81 season a success, but Matthew Wagner sees things differently. Wagner, the boys’ soccer coach at Warwick, looks back on the 2020 season as a building one for his Warriors. “If you look at results, one may say that it was a ‘down’ year,” said Wagner. “We came into the season having to replace seven key players from the year before.” Wagner mentioned his team’s improvement over the season while also mentioning their growth as a team. “This team showed that, and the coaches couldn’t be more proud. Specifically, the team showed effort, grit and, most importantly perseverance. At the end of the season, we have a good base of young players who are excited about next year.” Most would not consider a 4-81 season a success, but Matthew Wagner sees things differently. Local businesses are also encouraged to donate to the event. The ride, which is open to the public, is not just for motorcyclists. Drivers of other vehicles are invited, Stumpf said, adding, “It’s for anyone who would like to honor veterans.” It was important to organizers that the ride happened this year, despite changes to the event. “We knew we were going to do the ride, no matter what we had to change,” Stumpf explained. “We never once thought about canceling it. It’s too important to us and to the veterans.” For more information on the event, readers may call Stumpf at 717-468-6197.
