TChristmas concert will whisk listeners away on wings of music

for Christmas.”

he Lititz Area Community Choir’s upcoming presentation of “A Celtic Christmas” promises to be an event worth singing about.

“We’re trying to present festive, holiday music that is familiar to audience members,” said Debbie Kline-Smith, the choir’s director.

“There’s a warmth that comes from people being together at a performance.”

“(The concert) takes them on a journey of another style of music, which is very popular right now. People seem to enjoy that style of music, and I thought it would be great to bring a different style of music to Lititz. We’re doing it in English, but this style of music makes it a different feel for the holidays. I think people will leave there feeling ready

The Lititz Area Community Choir, Warwick Alumni and Friends will perform “A Celtic Christmas” at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22, at a new venue, Warwick High School’s 1,400seat Performing Arts Center, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz. The event is free to attend, tickets can be obtained at the door on the night of the concert and a freewill offering will be accepted.

The performance is expected to last about 70 minutes.

“We’re singing traditional Christmas songs with a Celtic flair,” said Kline-Smith. “When the audience walks in, bagpipes will be playing so they get a feel for the music. The order of songs

grows and builds. There’s an exciting opening number, a very upbeat piece. Then we do something a little lighter. Soloists are scheduled to sing in the middle of the program, and then the choir sings the last three selections, including ‘Auld Lang Syne.’”

In addition to the 90-member Lititz Area Community Choir, the concert will feature soloists

Matt Hehnly, Rachel Moury and Lauren Epps, as well as a duet by Gannon Ziegler and Jacob Soslow. The ambiance of the event will be enhanced by the two-bagpipers-one-drum Ceòl Nèamh Pipe Band and the talents of dancers sprinkled throughout.

“Singing brings great joy to the people performing and listeners,” said Kline-Smith. “Music brings

people together like no other art form. Sometimes we don’t know what the music is doing for us, but it is definitely doing it. There’s a warmth that comes from people being together at a performance.”

Since the middle of September, the choir has been rehearsing and practicing at Brunnerville United Methodist Church for 90 minutes each

Lancaster County has a long history of unique traditions and community-centered events. From annual celebrations such as Maize and Snitz Fest in Lampeter and East Petersburg’s Blues Festival to county-wide programs like the Miss Lancaster County pageant, every town contributes to the area’s distinct culture. Many annual traditions have withstood the test of time and continue to be held today, but some events,

such as Spooknacht, have been lost to time.

In 2024, few people have ever heard of Spooknacht. But prior to the 1970s, the annual event was highly anticipated by community members, and it involved every school in the county. According to archived photographs and clippings from old newspapers, Spooknacht took place every year around Halloween, and the event was organized by the former Lancaster Jaycees. Lititz Academy of Dance explores talents. The academy’s CoJoMotion Dance Company develops talents. “A Season for Wishes” provides an opportunity for talents to be combined for greater good.

“I hope (the student performers are) learning joy from helping others and taking their God-given talents and doing good for others,” said Lisa Kalinowski, creative director for CoJoMotion Dance Company’s “A Season for Wishes” show and owner of Lititz Academy of Dance. “I think most of us, and children, think they can’t make a

Music at Donegal will bring joyful sounds to the community

“The series is a wonderful way to enjoy a variety of music on a winter Sunday afternoon,” said Debra Ronning, coordinator of Music at Donegal. “Music at Donegal is offered to the community free of charge as a musical outreach.” Each concert in the series will begin at 3 p.m. at Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy.

Music at Donegal will kick off on Sunday, Dec. 15, with “Christmas at Donegal.”

“Holiday music will be presented by the Donegal church choir, the woodwind group valleyphonics, organ/piano music performed by John and James Landis, saxophone solos by Terry Millard, and a special performance artist, Luke Harnish, bass-baritone,” Ronning shared. “He will perform excerpts from the ‘Messiah’ as well as his own rendition of ‘O Holy Night.’ This concert features many of Donegal

Presbyterian’s talented members as well as our guest artist. … It is a celebration of beautiful traditional Christmas music.”

On Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025, the church will honor its Celtic heritage with a program by the Paloma Performance Troupe. “These young Irish step dancers perform traditional and modern Celtic dance,” Ronning said, noting that the group is from Paloma Performance Troupe/Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance. “Paloma means dove and is a symbol of the Holy Spirit in each of us. These talented students have performed widely throughout central PA and beyond.” This program will be held in the church’s fellowship hall.

The third concert of the series will focus on chamber music performed by Trio Caprice on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2025. The group consists of Dana Allaband on violin, Sara Male on cello and Ronning on piano. “The repertoire will feature Brahms and Beethoven as well

as some lighter classics,” Ronning remarked. “(Our) exuberance as friends only enhances the musical performance!”

A freewill offering will be received to help defray the cost of the program. “It sustains the series so we can continue to grow and provide wonderful music to the local community,” Ronning said. “We hope that our audiences come away with a renewed spirit and love for the arts.”

Library posts holiday activities

The Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Road, Lititz, has posted a variety of holiday activities.

The annual Holiday Happenings event will occur on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will feature a model train display, a visit from Santa, and family crafts.

Santa will be on hand from 10 a.m. to noon to listen to children’s

wishes. He will take a break at 11 a.m. to read the picture book “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” by Clement Clarke Moore to all in attendance.

Santa will also have his mailbox in the children’s area of the library until Monday, Dec. 23. Children may drop a letter in the mailbox.

The child’s full name and address

should be included for them to receive a reply from Santa. Lavon Stauffer and friends will have their model train display up and running in the library’s community room this holiday season. The display will be open on Wednesday, Dec. 11, and Thursday, Dec. 12, from 3 to 7 p.m.; on Friday, Dec. 13, from 3 to 5:30 p.m.; and on Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Patrons are invited to give back to the community and the library through the Mitten Tree and Gift-aBook through Dec. 14. The library will collect new mittens, gloves, hats, scarves, socks, earmuffs, and umbrellas for local families, and members of the community may bring in these items to decorate the annual Mitten Tree. Also, visitors can choose from a selection of books and purchase one for the library; supporters may put a holiday bookplate in the book to honor a special person.

For more information, call the library at 717-626-2255 or visit www.lititzlibrary.org.

Julia Whitfield, a lifelong resident of Lancaster and manager of Mennonite Life’s visitor center, said she has no memory of Spooknacht. According to Whitfield, most members of Lancaster’s Mennonite community rarely celebrate Halloween or trick-or-treat, but instead hold a harvest celebration every fall. Pete Kingsley, one of the former members of the local Jaycees club, said he has no memory of Spooknacht either. After following a trail of old newspaper clippings and bits of information in Willow Street Church’s archive, local historian Eric Schubert discovered that his acquaintance Linda Ross won the Spooknacht Queen contest in 1965.

stone for other contests. I’m a dancer, so I just entered everything I could.”

Lancaster County may never hold a Spooknacht celebration again, but despite vanishing with almost no trace, the bygone tradition will always hold a place in the area’s long history of unique festivities.

“It was a big celebration at McCaskey High School that involved all the schools in the county,” said Ross, a Penn Manor High School alumna who now resides in Marietta. “It was accompanied by other activities, but the contest was a huge deal. It was driven by the Jaycees, and that year’s Miss Pennsylvania and Miss Lancaster always attended.”

Ross recalled that each Lancaster County high school held its own Spooknacht queen contest, during which contestants would display their talents at a school assembly. Students voted on a candidate to send to Spooknacht for the county-wide competition, and contestants in the final pageant showcased a talent and answered questions in front of a panel of judges.

Ross said she does not know when or why the annual event officially stopped taking place. The origins of Spooknacht began several decades before Ross won in 1965; Ross’ mother won the title of Spooknacht Queen in the 1940s. “I think women just became less interested in participating in beauty pageants,” Ross speculated. “Some people used it as a stepping

difference. But when you have so many hearts come together for good, miracles can happen. There are so many pieces, and everyone has their role. I can’t believe it’s been 20 years. That’s a lot of miracles.”

Lititz Academy of Dance’s CoJoMotion Dance Company will present its 20th annual “A Season for Wishes” performance on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 6 p.m. at Lancaster Mennonite High School’s High Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Tickets can be purchased online prior to the show by searching for “CoJoMotion Dance Company” on Facebook or at the door beginning at 5:30 p.m. on the day of the event. All proceeds raised from the event will be donated to Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and the Susquehanna Valley.

“We always say it is the most joyous kickoff to the holidays imaginable,” said Kalinowski. “It’s so celebratory. It’s family, friendship and coming together. It’s doing God’s work in the best way possible.”

The two-and-a-half-hour performance will feature a huge holiday dance extravaganza presented by 40 members of CoJoMotion Dance Company, fabulous sounds of the season, addresses from Make-AWish families and a separate fund-

raiser involving dozens of themed gift baskets.

“I love seeing our dancers and their joy and them performing for something so much bigger than themselves,” said Kalinowski. “It means so much to them. It’s beautiful to see kids have adult thinking. (The event) does so much for so many.”

The CoJoMotion Dance Company is made up of dancers in grades five through 12 from the Warwick, Manheim Township, Manheim Central, and other area school districts, as well as Lancaster Country Day. Nearly 1,000 family members, friends, staff members and community members are expected to attend.

“(The student performers) have several performances throughout the year, but they will tell you this is the most important one,” said Kalinowski. “It’s not about them. This is for children who deserve it so much. It’s so special. As their teacher, it means the world to me that that’s their mindset. When they get to meet the Make-AWish families, it means so much to them. As their teacher, I’m so proud of them.”

Last year, “A Season for Wishes” raised over $50,000 for Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and the Susquehanna Valley, a new all-time

high. That figure pushed the total amount raised in the event’s 19 years to nearly $520,000.

“If we could (match that $50,000 amount), it would be incredible,” said Kalinowski. “The money goes toward granting wishes for kids with life-threatening conditions. We are trying to raise as much money as possible. We want to make as many wishes come true as possible.”

Located at 620 Paxton Place, Suite 107, Lititz, the Lititz Dance Academy was established in 2001 and offers classes in ballet, jazz, tap, modern pointe, hip-hop, lyrical and children’s combo. CoJoMotion Dance Company was formed in 2004 to offer an opportunity for serious dancers to continue to enhance their skills.

“The purpose of Lititz Dance Academy is to share the gift of dance with as many children as possible, in as loving an atmosphere as possible,” said Kalinowski. “CoJoMotion Dance Company gives students the dance company experience. This is our signature event. It’s been a legacy for so many people.”

Tree Tenders training planned

Penn State Extension will offer a Tree Tenders training webinar series on Wednesdays, Jan. 8 to Feb. 19, from noon to 1 p.m. Through the Tree Tenders

training program, developed by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) in partnership with Penn State Extension Urban Foresters, people may gain the skills needed to restore and care for their community’s tree canopy. Individuals learn how to plant, prune, and maintain trees. Tree Tenders work to increase environmental health and sustainability, enhance green spaces, and increase tree cover in neighborhoods across Pennsylvania.

Since 1993, PHS has trained thousands of Tree Tenders in more than 200 neighborhoods across Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has supported the program since 2004. In 2008, the program expanded to Pittsburgh and smaller metropolitan areas, and by 2013, it became available statewide. Since then, thousands more have been trained throughout Pennsylvania and beyond.

Each participant will receive a printed copy of the Tree Tenders Handbook, published by PHS. To register by Friday, Jan. 3, visit https://extension.psu.edu/ and search for “Tree Tenders Training.”
