Connect Us Church welcomes Dustin Forbes BY JEFF FALK

God’s plan is perfect, and so is His timing. Dustin Forbes is the new associate pastor at one of Lancaster County’s newest churches. Everything about his personal journey has led him to this point. On Nov. 12, Forbes officially stepped into his new role as associate pastor at Connect Us Church, 1500 Christopher Place, Lancaster. During the ceremony, Forbes, a resident of Lititz, was supported by the physical presence of his family - wife Ashley and son Hayden - in much the same way he hopes to support the Associate pastor Dustin Forbes members of Connect Us Church. Players will play practice rounds on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of that week. The four-round, 72-hole championship tournament will begin on Thursday, May 30, and conclude on Sunday, June 2. “With 25 years of experience and the help of my staff, we’re going to put on the best show possible,” said Saunders. “It’s been a lot of planning. We’re all excited, and it’s exciting for the community. The Lancaster Country Club is committed to

Creating safe spaces Responding to the mental health needs of teenagers BY ANN MEAD ASH

Today’s teenagers are facing issues unfamiliar to their parents and grandparents, and according to Susannah Moore, clinical social worker/ therapist with Integrate Therapy and Wellness Collective in Bird-in-Hand, that can make it hard for generations to relate. “Those of us who graduated high school before COVID-19 hit and before social media took over the way it has, simply can’t understand what it

means to be a teen today,” said Moore. As a former school social worker, Moore is especially familiar with the issues facing students. “(Teenagers) have had their entire world shifted over and over,” Moore commented. “They haven’t had the sense of stability that most of us had.” Mental health issues among teens were rising prior to the advent of COVID-19 restrictions. Dustin Forbes from pg 1 Hope Community Church in Mount Joy and as the campus pastor at Victory Church Lititz Campus. A graduate of the Christian School of York, Forbes holds a Bachelor of Arts in pastoral ministries and biblical studies from Lancaster Bible College. Forbes also spent six years in the United States Army and served as a Blackhawk helicopter crew chief. His honorable service, which concluded in February of 2016, included multiple deployments. “There was definitely a calling moment for me,” said Forbes. “During my time in the military, God taught me important lessons about leadership, resilience and the importance of faith. I felt a deep calling to use these experiences to serve a higher purpose. When I got out of the military, God got a hold of me. That’s how I found my way here.” “My faith has grown a ton since I left the military,” Forbes added. “The military showed me something was missing. I came to Christ after leaving the military. My faith has grown into an authentic personal relationship with Jesus Christ.”

Connect Us Church is a nondenominational church founded in January of 2021. To discover its mission, one need not look much further than its name. “The idea is to take the focus off the building,” said Forbes. “We’re called to do life together, to make long-lasting relationships with one another. Our whole mission is to connect with each other and Jesus Christ. If you point to Jesus, that’s where we want to lead. We want to take the teachings in Scripture and apply them to everyday life. Whether you’ve been a Christian for five minutes or 50 years, you’ve got a next step to be closer to Jesus.” “We’re not beholden to a specific doctrine,” he added. “God’s doing things in Lancaster County and through Connect Us Church. Our mission is being fulfilled.” When Forbes opened his heart to God, God opened Forbes’ mind. “Honestly, if (becoming a lead pastor is) what God has for me, I will accept it,” said Forbes. “I think what God has for me is exactly what I’m doing right now. Sometimes it’s hard to see God’s plan. I’ve stopped trying to control it. I’m so blessed and thrilled to be here.”

According to McDevitt, help is available when parents and school staff members respond to student needs. “Lancaster is very fortunate to have a wealth of resources, but we need to ensure that kids feel safe sharing with the adults in their lives,” she said. “They need to know not only that they will be heard, but also that we will take action to provide them with tangible support.” Moore echoed McDevitt’s thoughts, saying, “As a therapist working with teens, I am primarily interested in giving them that space where they feel believed and trusted and respected.” She praised area schools for their efforts in this

Moore pointed out that the rise of cyberbullying coupled with the pandemic has complicated the situation. “Complex trauma is what we’re looking at,” she said. “Ways that complex trauma can present can look like puberty or trying to gain independence … (but) something that is true for most teens is that they benefit from support in figuring out their own mental health.” Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC), noted that communication is key, but not

Lancaster band wins Country Rock Group of the Year award BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

On Oct. 22, Lancaster-based music group The Jess Zimmerman Band won the Country Rock Group of the Year award at the ninth annual Josie Music Awards in Nashville. The Jess Zimmerman Band is led by Jess Heitz, who is accompanied by guitarist Joe Barszowski, bassist John Knobler and drummer Joe Mattis. This is the second year the outfit has been nominated for awards at the ceremony, which was hosted at the famous American country music venue the Grand Ole Opry. Last year, The Jess Zimmerman Band received the Album of the Year award for its debut album “Breathe.” This year, in addition to being nominated for multiple awards, the band performed during the ceremony. Out of nearly 1,000 applicants, only 10 artists were selected to play at the event. “It was really one of the biggest highlights of the year,” Heitz said. “The Grand Ole Opry is iconic for country music.” The Jess Zimmerman Band performed songs from an album released in May, titled “Be The Light.” “The idea behind ‚ ‘Be The Light’

was putting together something that puts you in a good place when you listen to it,” said Heitz. “It’s bright and bold, and it shines through.” The group began to work on the album at the end of 2022, and it will be submitted for the 2024 Josie Music Awards. The Josie Music Awards specifically highlight independent artists, as in musicians who are not signed to a record label. Without a label, independent artists like The Jess Zimmerman band manage their own recording, producing, touring and marketing. “Breathe” and “Be The Light” were both recorded at Omnisound Studios in Nashville, and Heitz and her bandmates have remained busy with and performing shows throughout the East Coast, Midwest and South. Following The Jess Zimmerman Band’s success at last year’s Josie Music Awards, the group had opportunities throughout the year to share the stage with artists such as Shania Twain, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band. “It’s been quite a year,” said Heitz. “Winning Album of the Year helped set the tone for 2023. Going into 2024, who knows what’s in store?” Although The Jess Zimmerman Band has multiple gigs booked in other states, the group will perform several shows in Lancaster and York counties in the new year. To purchase tickets or listen to The Jess Zimmerman Band online, visit http://www.jzband.org/.
