extensive research, accelerated the timing to launch a districtwide program. The school district currently has funding for three facility dogs. The new campaign will support three additional dogs, allowing for placement of a facility dog in each Warwick school building. According to district representatives, research has shown that therapy dogs can provide a sense of connection in challenging situations; reduce symptoms of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety; and improve self-esteem and motivation. However, unlike service dogs, these animals do not offer specific support for a physical challenge such as sight or hearing difficulties. Many schools and colleges are adopting these programs as a cost-effective means of providing social and emotional support for students and promoting learning. The Warwick School District is looking to man’s best friend as a tool to overcome concerns such as daily anxiety, depression, grief, and suicidal thoughts by launching a Facility Dog Program in Warwick schools. The Warwick Education Foundation (WEF) is leading the fundraising campaign. The WEF has created a giving platform, called “Paws for Warwick,” where community members can securely make taxdeductible contributions. The goal is to raise $30,000 for the purchase and provision of three facility therapy dogs. According to WEF executive director Barbara Mobley, facility therapy dogs were successfully utilized in Warwick High School in response to the recent tragedies involving students. District administrators saw the peaceful benefits of facility therapy dog interaction with students in times of crisis. That experience, coupled with previous

Senior pastor Jerry McGrath has announced that Lititz United Methodist Church (LUMC), 201 E. Market St., will hold seven Christmas week services. A variety of programs are intentionally offered so people can choose from an assortment of worship styles. The Sunday morning services will be held at regular times on Dec. 23, with a traditional service at 9 a.m. and an informal contemporary gathering at 10:30 a.m. A choir cantata titled “Joy” will be featured at the traditional service, with an encore presentation held

at Brunnerville United Methodist Church, 517 Pine Hill Road, Lititz, on Christmas Eve, Monday, Dec. 24, at 6 p.m. On Christmas Eve, LUMC will host four services. At 2 p.m. Lessons and Carols will be shared during the daylight hours. This service is geared toward those who have alternate evening plans or do not wish to drive at night. At 4 p.m. there will be a special service that is designed for children and is open to the whole family. The interactive service will give children the

opportunity to be involved in worship along with Christmas songs. At 6:30 p.m., LUMC will invite the community to celebrate the Savior’s birth with a contemporary mix of Christmas music, video, and lighting with a message from God’s Word. Eric Fisher will lead worship and will be joined by Awakened Praise Band. A candle lighting will highlight the service. Nursery care will be available. Traditional worship will be held at 8:30 p.m., with an organ recital by Keith Reifsnyder

preceding the service at 8 p.m. A classic candle lighting will highlight the evening along with traditional hymns and choir anthems. On Sunday, Dec. 30, there will be a combined “Agape” service in the social hall beginning at 10 a.m. Scriptures, stories, and hymns will be shared during a feast of Moravian sugar cake and hot chocolate. Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” in” By Chelsea Peifer

Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the

like we do now,” noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people,” Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday

John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 23 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Participants will follow guides to Locust Street and through a loop in the Mount Bethel Cemetery before returning to the church. To purchase tickets, interested individuals may call 717-517-2442. A specific tour time will be designated when tickets are reserved. Organizers strongly encourage people to order tickets in advance. A limited number of tickets may be available on the night of the tours but are not

LCCC Presents Donations At Car Show

The Lancaster County Corvette Club (LCCC) held its annual American Legends Fun Show for Corvettes and any other GM or GM-powered cars at Faulkner Chevrolet on Oct. 21. More than 145 cars showed up for the event despite the cold weather. Awards were presented in 15 classes - seven for Corvettes and eight for nonCorvettes - along with special awards presented by Clare House Lancaster and Faulkner Chevrolet. Best of Show trophies were awarded for Best GM Car, Best GM Truck and Best Corvette. During the afternoon, checks were presented for $23,000 to Clare House and for $22,500 to the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation (CMAF). During the year, LCCC members sold giveaway drawing tickets for a new 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. The proceeds from the ticket sale minus the costs of the car were split between the Clare House and CMAF. The car was awarded to Chris and Donna Giles of Conisteo, N.Y., during the annual Corvettes at Carlisle event in late August. LCCC governor Clyde Mooney presented checks to Eva Dombrowski, Clare House executive director; Valerie Kissinger of Clare House board of directors; and Judy Miller, Chip Miller’s widow and assistant treasurer of the CMAF. The club has organized numerous car giveaway drawings in the past, but after a gap it restarted its efforts last year. In 2016 and 2017, the club distributed more than $51,000 each year to the same two charities. Along with the giveaway drawing for the car, the club also has other shows and events through the year. These activities also raise additional funds for Clare House, the club’s

Michael R. Molla was installed as the third president of Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) in a special ceremony on Oct. 30 at the Ware Center as part of a day of celebration for PCA&D’s engagement in Lancaster city. In the morning, all PCA&D students, plus faculty, staff members and trustees, took part in PCA&D & Lancaster: Creative Community Engagement. The participants worked on 17 engagement projects using art and design in problem solving to assist area community organizations. The event was bookended by a kickoff breakfast, featuring community engagement tips from Michael Bunting of Lancaster’s The Stone School, and a celebratory lunch. The presidential installation ceremony in the afternoon began with a parade of regalia-robed faculty, staff members, students and trustees making their way from PCA&D to the Ware Center. The ceremony focused on PCA&D’s history and future, and it featured Molla’s chosen theme of “&,” the ampersand, a symbol of forging, building and deepening connections. The program reintroduced PCA&D to the Lancaster community and arts community and told the story of the importance of arts in the community. Nearly 200 people from across Lancaster County attended the eighth annual Pursenalities Party on Nov. 5 at Bent Creek Country Club in Lititz. Rock Ford’s annual Yuletide tours provide a journey back in time to when Christmas Day was only the beginning of the season. Candlelight, festive music, dancing, and holiday greenery will set the scene for an 18th-century Yuletide at Rock Ford Plantation, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. During the period when General Hand and his family lived at Rock Ford, Christmas Day marked the start of a festive season that included 12 days of parties, dinners and dances. Visitors to Rock Ford’s Yuletide tours will learn about

18th-century traditions, listen to traditional holiday music by the Harrisburg-based musical group Seasons and watch preparations in the mansion’s kitchen by members of the Warm Hearth Club. Costumed volunteers will be stationed in various rooms of the mansion offering insight into Yuletide traditions. The candlelight tours will feature period dancing by a volunteer dance group. A new show, “Marionettes in the Mansion,” will mark the culmination of Yuletide at Rock Ford. A joint production with the Lancaster Marionette Theatre, the show will be staged in the mansion and

Holiday Tree Tips Natural Christmas tree aficionados love the authenticity such trees provide during the holiday season. Natural trees also provide a unique aroma that can make holiday celebrations feel more homey. A few simple strategies can help holiday revelers ensure their Christmas trees make it through the holiday season unscathed. When purchasing natural trees, holiday celebrants, especially those who like to buy their trees in early December, may be concerned about keeping their trees fresh throughout the holiday season. Several tips can help trees last until the final present is unwrapped and the last of the egg nog has been consumed. The first tip is to buy a freshly cut tree. Whenever possible, people should cut their own trees. This ensures that the tree they bring home is fresh, increasing the chances it will remain so

throughout the season. If it is not possible to cut one’s own tree, the National Fire Protection Association notes that fresh trees should have green needles that do not come off when touched. Trees that appear to be dried out or those that shed needles when touched should be avoided. The Tree Care Industry Association advises consumers to protect their Christmas trees as they transport them home. The tree should be wrapped in a plastic wrap so it makes it home damage-free. A damaged tree might not make it through the holiday season. Pre-cut trees should be cut again before leaving the lot. Precut trees can make it through the holiday season looking their best, but buyers should request that employees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree before leaving the lot. Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal their

Classified Deadlines base, making it hard for them to absorb water. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buyers are ensuring their trees will be able to absorb the water they will need to make it through the season when they get home. To prevent the base of the tree from drying out, the tree should be placed in water the moment it gets home. Freshly cut trees may initially need the water in their tree stands filled in the morning and then again in the evening. As the season progresses trees likely will not need their stands filled more than once per day. The tree should be placed away from heat sources. Placing trees away from heat sources, such as radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and lights, reduces the likelihood that trees will dry out and also reduces the risk of fire.

Arbor Day Foundation Offers Gift Opportunities Returning for the ninth season in a row, Give-A-Tree cards from the Arbor Day Foundation offer a holiday giving opportunity with conservation benefits that will endure for generations. Again this year, Give-A-Tree cards can be purchased individually and with customized text for a set price. Also, purchasing the Arbor Day Foundation’s coffee helps

preserve rain forests in Central and South America. The foundation’s coffee, a part of the Rain Forest Rescue program, is shadegrown under the canopy of Latin American rain forests. The foundation’s Trees in Celebration program allows the giver to honor loved ones while supporting conservation efforts. For each dollar donated, one tree is planted in a high-need forest, and

recipients are given a certificate showing them where the trees were planted. In addition, with foundation membership, recipients will be sent 10 free trees, which will be shipped at the right time of year for planting. Membership levels vary and begin with a set minimum contribution. For more information, readers may visit www.arborday.org.

Toy Safety Tips Given Prevent Blindness, a nonprofit eye health organization, recommends Christmas gift buyers make safety a priority. To help shoppers select appropriate gifts this holiday season, Prevent Blindness has declared December as Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month. Prevent Blindness offers tips and suggestions with safety in mind. Safety tips include reading all warnings and instructions on the box; asking if a toy is right for a child’s ability and age; considering whether other smaller children may be in the home and may have access to the toy; avoiding purchasing toys with sharp or rigid points, spikes, rods, or dangerous edges; checking the lenses and frames of children’s sunglasses; buying toys that will withstand impact and not break into

dangerous shards; avoiding toys that shoot or include parts that fly off; not giving toys with small parts to young children; not purchasing toys with long strings or cords, especially for infants and very young children; always disposing of uninflated or broken balloons immediately; and not purchasing toys with small magnets. If purchasing sports items or equipment for sports such as basketball, baseball or hockey, Prevent Blindness suggests that the proper sports eye protection also be included. Recommendations may be found at www.pre ventblindness.org/recommend ed-sports-eye-protectors. For more information on safe toys and gifts for children, readers may visit preventblind ness.org/safe-toy-checklist or call 800-331-2020.

Three Trips Around The Planet Lifecycles Concludes Fourth Season By Chelsea Peifer

Sometimes the wide-open road ahead can look impossible to conquer, but the leaders at Lifecycles are all about equipping students to rise to meet whatever challenges may arise. Founded by Lee DeRemer, the nonprofit mentoring program is committed to building young men of character through bicycling and outdoor adventures. One of the ways Lifecycles accomplishes that is through an annual summer challenge ride, and this year was the first time that the program offered two trips. The first summer journey, dubbed the Extreme Challenge Ride, was designed for Lifecycles participants ready for an advanced level of riding. A group of 10 teenage boys and six adult leaders spent one week navigating 330 miles from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., covering more than 60 miles each day and taking in beautiful scenery along the Great Allegheny Passage. A second trip later in the summer to White Sulfur Springs in Bedford was designed as more of a camping trip with daily rides, rather than a trek from one destination to another. Heavy rainfall during that week added to the normal challenges attached to camping and riding. “It rained almost every day, but we just kept reminding the boys every day that attitude is everything,” DeRemer recalled. In addition to offering two

summer rides, the 2018 Lifecycles season featured the introduction of a new weekly riding site that met at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. Albert Vega, who had volunteered as a leader for the weekly rides on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Marietta and Landisville, approached DeRemer with the idea of starting another site in the eastern part of the county. “My truck was always full going up to Marietta, and I told Lee that it would be cool to expand,” Vega recalled. “He asked if I’d be willing to lead it, so I began recruiting leaders.” Vega said that is especially amazing to see boys who start out saying that something is too hard go on to conquer the particular ride or obstacle. “We climbed for two days (during the Extreme Challenge Ride), and when we got to mile marker zero in D.C., all the boys were saying, ‘We accomplished it!’” Vega said. “That was really neat, and I love watching the boys see things they’d probably never see unless they were off the grid.” The Garden Spot site led rides on Wednesday evenings from April through November, but Vega said the schedule for 2019 is still in the works. Individuals interested in participating at any of the sites may visit www.life cyclesteam.org to learn more. “The doors are always open,” DeRemer stated. Rides take place on a weekly basis with extra rides on Saturdays from time to time. Bicycles and helmets are provided, along

Lifecycles offers free weekly bicycle rides for boys ages 12 to 18 at locations in Marietta, Landisville, and New Holland, along with weekend and summer challenge rides. At the close of its fourth season, the organization had tracked a total of more than 77,000 miles ridden by its students and volunteer leaders. with a meal. Participation is free and open to boys ages 12 to 18. Following a holiday break, Lifecycles will resume in January with its indoor program on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS), 105 Fairview Ave., Mount Joy. As Lifecycles wrapped up its fourth year of operations, DeRemer said that thus far the organization has tracked a total of more than 77,000 miles ridden - equivalent to more than three times around the planet - and over 22,000 volunteer hours and 10,000 meals served. “I’m just floored by this, and we’re already talking about year five,” shared DeRemer. In 2019, Lifecycles plans to

implement a teenage bicycling safety certification for those interested. “We have been educating them but wanted to be able to give an official certification,” DeRemer explained. It will allow participants to take a test and become certified through a practicum experience. The summer Extreme Challenge Ride will cover 400 miles from Lancaster to Boston. “If you’re really ready, we’ll give you an experience you won’t forget,” said DeRemer. To inquire about volunteering at any of the locations, readers may email director@life cyclesteam.org or call 717-5862511. “We always love to have new volunteers of any age and riding ability,” remarked DeRemer.
