Ephrata Cloister Student Historians rehearse for the Lantern Tours.

Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will host Lantern Tours on Wednesday, Dec. 27, through Saturday, Dec. 30. Each day, tours will leave the visitor center every half hour, with the first tour at 6 p.m. and the last tour at 8 p.m. When planning a trip nowadays, people often rely on Tripadvisor for reviews, but in the 1750s, it was word of mouth or written communication that people turned to for advice. During the Lantern Tours, attendees

will hear reviews to learn what others thought of the founder of the Ephrata Cloister, Conrad Beissel, and his followers. The Ephrata Cloister Student Historians will bring these stories to life. Attendance is limited, and advance tickets are required by calling 717733-6600 or visiting https://bit.ly/3SMzBI4. There is a discount for seniors, students ages 6 to 17 and Ephrata Cloister Associates members. Admission is free for those 5 years of age and younger. scan this code for more local news townlively.com

Isaiah, the center’s resident elevator enthusiast, was entrusted with the responsibility of inspecting the elevator to guarantee its flawless operation. Despite the challenges posed by his condition, Isaiah checked off every element on the inspector’s checklist provided by Benchmark Construction. The checklist consisted of essential elements such as functioning lights, operational buttons, seamless opening and closing of doors, and a smooth up-and-down motion. Isaiah’s signature on the inspection form signifies not just an approval of the elevator’s functionality but also Schreiber’s commitment to providing its clients with a safe and inclusive environment where they may grow and thrive. A county-wide call to help neighbors in need BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

As winter rolls around each year, food banks and community outreach programs across the country are often met with a stark increase in the demand for their services. While the holiday season is a time of celebration for many, the cold weather and additional expenses that accompany this time of year can prove challenging for others. To combat this seasonal challenge, Water Street Mission launched its annual food drive on Nov. 1, and the organization is once again calling on Lancaster County residents to band together in support of their neighbors. “We already started to see an increase in demand for our programs in September, and we’re expecting another influx as the months get colder,” said Matt Clement, director of marketing for Water Street Mission. “We didn’t quite meet our goal last year, but we’re thankful that we got close. It really helped us make it through

the winter.” The goal of this year’s drive is 110,000 pounds of food. Until Friday, Dec. 22, donations of nonperishable food items may be dropped off directly at Water Street Mission’s facility, which is located at 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster. Donors can bring items to the building’s loading dock during its regular hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. Donations may also be taken to any of the 30 drop-off locations that have been established through partnerships with businesses and organizations across the county. To view the list of requested items and drop-off locations or to host a drop-off location, visit https://tinyurl.com/ wsmdrive2023. In addition to helping Water Street Mission to withstand the wintertime wave, the food drive allows the organization to continue its many other outreach programs without diverting all of its resources. Water Street Mission’s

Water Street Mission provides its guests with three meals each day in its dining hall.

emergency shelter provides housing for 170 individuals each night, and about 15% of the guests are children. The organization’s other resources are utilized to maintain its building, medical and dental clinics and a dining hall that provides guests with three meals per day. The primary facility is staffed by nearly 100 workers to offer services around the clock. Water Street Mission offers a variety of services beyond its emergency shelter and food bank. The

organization offers opportunities for employment through its connections throughout the community, and it facilitates multiple educational programs that include college courses and GED test preparation. Last year, Water Street Mission served almost 9,000 individuals through its outreach center. Water Street Mission is always accepting volunteers to assist with food sorting during the drive. its annual Yuletide Tours. This year, the self-guided tours will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 27, from 4 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.; Thursday, Dec. 28, from 4 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.; and Friday, Dec. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. During each tour, guests are invited to explore the halls of Rock Ford’s historic mansion, which belonged to Revolutionary War general Edward Hand. The home will be transformed into a historically accurate re-creation of how it likely appeared when Hand dwelled there. Volunteers who are dressed in period-accurate clothing will be located throughout the rooms to answer guests’ questions, and meals that were popular in Colonial times will be prepared in the kitchen. In the hallways, performers will showcase traditional waltzes and

other dances from the era. Harpsichordists Margaret Marsch and Faith Martin and violinist Mercy Martin will provide live music during each tour. Guests may visit the mansion’s study to hear a recorded monologue of Hand played by an actor. In the recording, Hand reflects on Christmas Day in 1776, when he crossed the Delaware River beside George Washington to turn the tide of the Revolutionary War. Two decades later, Hand ponders the luxuries that were made attainable by the sacrifices of others. The Yuletide Tours are historically informed by Historic Rock Ford’s curator, Sarah Alberico, who has researched old newspapers and archives to learn what was customary in the 18th century. “The Yuletide Tours are an opportunity take a little

Every year, after festivities wind down on Christmas Day, many people experience a feeling of melancholy. Once all the wrapping paper has been ripped off the presents, it’s not uncommon for revelers to catch the post-Christmas blues as they begin to think of the bleak winter months that must be endured before the next holiday. But most people don’t know that this is a uniquely modern problem - some centuries ago, Christmas Day marked the beginning of the fun. The traditional English Christmas was known as Yuletide, a custom involving 12 days of partying that kicked off on Dec. 25 every year. Christmas Day itself was primarily for religious observance. The holiday was followed by large gatherings of friends and family members who shared meals, played games, swapped stories and danced together. Gift giving did not have the same importance as it does in modern times, but rather it involved the exchange of small, sentimental presents on New Year’s Day. After nearly two weeks, Yuletide celebrations usually peaked on Twelfth Night with a large dinner party or a ball. Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, offers members of the community a chance to see how Christmas was celebrated in the 18th century with

United Way of Lancaster County will partner with Brubaker Inc. to bring back the Warm Home, Warm Hearts program after a one-year hiatus. This will be the fourth year of the program, which provides a heating system update to one family chosen through an application process. United Way of Lancaster County utilizes Warm Homes, Warm Hearts to bring awareness to fuel poverty and energy burden in the community. A household is in fuel poverty when family

members struggle to afford the energy required for adequate warmth and other essential energy services. Energy burden is the ratio of income to energy costs; for some, energy costs can peak at 30% of a household’s income. Health issues arise when an individual is unable to access the appropriate temperature in his or her home to stay warm in the coldest months. Applications must be submitted by Sunday, Dec. 31, at midnight. A committee of individuals

appointed by United Way of Lancaster County’s Award Committee will review each application. The winner, along with the individual who nominated him or her, will be notified no later than Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, via the person’s preferred method of contact. If the winner is ineligible for the heating system repair or replacement, United Way will contact the household selected as a runner-up. To apply, visit www. uwlanc.org/warm -home-warm-hearts/.

Age-based guidelines for buying toys and gifts The holiday season involves making holiday gift lists and checking them twice, or even more frequently to ensure that gift-givers find the best fit for recipients. While age may only be a number in certain instances, when it comes to gifting, age should be a consideration - particularly when kids are involved. Thousands of children are treated for toy-related injuries each year. Toys that are small or have small pieces can be choking hazards when given to children who are too young to use them safely. In addition, falls, eye injuries, drowning, and motor accidents are leading causes of gift-related injuries.

Toy-related injuries are preventable, and prevention often comes down to choosing age-appropriate toys for kids. Adults buying toys for children should read the packaging carefully. Most toys and other children’s products come with an age range recommendation. While some kids may be mature beyond their years, it is best to choose gifts that fall within the recommended range. This is particularly the case for infants, toddlers and any child under the age of 5. Toy buyers also should avoid fad gifts. Children often want the latest gadgets and toys for gifts even if they are not the smartest choice. Adults

should resist the urge to buy something just to be a cool parent or grandparent, especially if the item is not age-appropriate. Mermaid tails have become popular in recent years, but they limit movement and can make swimming more difficult, potentially increasing risk of drowning. Safety gear should be provided. As children age, they may be more interested in scooters, bicycles, skates, and other such items. These gifts should be accompanied by helmets, knee pads and eye protection. Adults should consider waiting before gifting certain electronics. Although children may be able to use

devices safely, it might be wise to wait to give young children smartphones and tablets due to the consequences of excessive screen time. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry said children ages 2 to 5 should limit non-educational screen time to about one hour per weekday and three hours on weekend days. Children should be encouraged to pursue healthy habits that limit use of screens, so gift-givers can look for gifts that align with this goal. Age-appropriate gifts may help to ensure safety for the youngest people on holiday gift lists.

Lecture to explore gender and media Mennonite Life will partner with the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies to host a lecture about gender and media in two conservative communities on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024, from 2 to 3:15 p.m. in the chapel at Brethren

Village, 3009 Lititz Pike, Lititz. Amish and ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities are associated with religious observance and a renunciation of worldly things. Investigation of women’s relationship to

media in these communities, however, reveals a more nuanced picture of the boundaries at play and women’s roles in negotiating them. In this talk, Rivka Neriya-Ben Shahar will draw on extensive interviews with women in both

Buffalo wings recipe for the big game

YEAR END

Football season heats up each January, when fans of both college football and the professional game look forward to each sport’s respective playoffs. Many people hold game watch parties, which not only provide an opportunity to view the big game, but also offer social time and food. The following recipe for “Grilled Buffalo Wings,” courtesy of cookbook author Katie Lee Biegel and The Food Network, may fit nicely in the game day spread.

Instructions: 1. In a small bowl, combine the salt, pepper and garlic powder. In a large bowl, toss the wings with the salt mixture to evenly coat. 2. Preheat a gas grill to medium heat, about 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 3. Place the wings on the grill, crowding them together so they are all touching. This method goes against the conventional wisdom of giving meat room so it does not steam. In this recipe, the meat should steam so it stays moist. Grill, flipping the wings every 5 minutes, for a total of 20 minutes of cooking. 4. In the meantime, heat the butter, hot sauce, vinegar, and honey in a saucepan over low heat and whisk to combine. 5. In a clean, large bowl, toss the wings with the sauce. Turn the heat up on the grill to medium-high. Use tongs to remove the wings from the sauce and put them back on the grill until the skins crisp, 1 to 2 minutes per side. Put the wings back in the bowl with the sauce, toss and serve.
