Proverbs 31 Book Reaches Out To Women Author Pens Bible Study During Shutdown BY ANN MEAD ASH

In Proverbs 31, the writer describes a woman of noble character. To many women studying the text, the characteristics of this woman may seem daunting. “A lot of women who read Proverbs 31 ‌ walk away with a list of things to do,â€? said Lancaster County resident Mari Hernandez-Tuten, author of “Proverbs 31 in 5 Minutes a Day Bible Study,â€? which was released in early September. Hernandez-Tuten wanted to give women a different

perspective on the virtues of the Proverbs 31 woman. “This woman (in Proverbs 31) is doing all these things, but I don’t think it’s just a day in her life. I think these are seasons throughout her life, noted Hernandez-Tuten. “You see her being productive, and you see her trusting God in the midst of all sorts of situations. One goal of the book was to show women that they can make significant contributions. “This whole theme of having influence as women no matter where we are is ... a theme I want to share with other women, said Hernandez-Tuten. With that focus in mind,

Hernandez-Tuten pictured her reader as serious but busy. “I think of this Bible study as something for women who have been doing devotionals and want to go a little deeper but aren’t ready to sit down for one or two hours, said HernandezTuten, who worked with her editor to offer readers studies that can be done in a short amount of time. The study is set up to be completed in seven weeks when the reader finishes a segment each day. Hernandez-Tuten noted that the study offers variety. “Some days are short devotions with a question and sometimes an activity, she said. There is an “Act section that encourages the reader to “put into action what (she) just learned. The study can be done individually or in groups. With more than 20 years of experience in ministry, Hernandez-Tuten had considered writing a book later on in her life. When she was contacted by a publisher at the end of 2019, she decided to accept the opportunity as a gift from God. Her feelings about the opportunity did not change, but her circumstances soon did. “I had signed a contract and was moving forward when COVID hit, Hernandez-Tuten recalled. “I was not expecting to be writing during a pandemic with (all my family) in my house. Calling the experience “the opposite of anything I had ever imagined, Hernandez-Tuten set about writing with three

school-age sons attending school virtually and her husband teaching school virtually. “The concentration part was really hard, she remembered. Eventually, she asked her husband to take the boys on a brief camping trip so she could have the solitude she needed to meet her deadlines, and she completed the book in about four months. About a month after the book was published, Hernandez-Tuten’s father died. To honor her father’s legacy, Hernandez-Tuten held a “Buy a Book, Donate a Book! event on Nov. 9 at The Mustard Seed Boutique in Lititz. For each one of her books that was sold that day, Hernandez-Tuten donated a book to a local women’s shelter to help fulfill her passion to help women who have been abused. “We wanted to make the season bright for the families and keep them all safe,” said Alisha Fitzwater, one of the organizers of the Gigi’s Playhouse Drive-Through Christmas event that was held on Dec. 5 in the parking lot at GiGi’s Playhouse, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center, located at 2503 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. Originally, GiGi’s had planned to hold its annual Pancakes and Pajamas event on that day at Bright Side Opportunities Center in Lancaster. To keep the event safe, organizers had scheduled three different sessions to limit occupancy. Each session was to include a visit with Santa and a live band playing Christmas music. In early December, though, with numbers related to COVID-19 infections rising, Fitzwater said the team decided to put efforts into creating a drive-through, contactless experience at GiGi’s Playhouse that allowed for social distancing for the 40 families that planned to attend. “We

had a lot of businesses donate, so we could have the activity bags for all the families,” Fitzwater said, adding that visitors were of all ages. Fitzwater said about eight stations were set up around the edges of the parking lot where visitors in their cars could stop. “(Families) do a short activity at each (station),” explained Fitzwater, who said that some of the activities included voting for a favorite Christmas activity or Christmas movie. At another station, visitors could guess the number of bows on a giant present. Pete the Corgi, who was dressed as a reindeer for the event, and a person in a Grinch costume greeted guests. “As they drive through, they are also (taking part in) a scavenger hunt looking for things that are hidden around in the grass and with the inflatables,” said Fitzwater. Christmas-themed inflatables covered the lawn. They included an elephant and several incarnations of Santa, including him riding in a race car, flying a plane with moving propellers, and being

pulled from the chimney by a reindeer. Several of those manning the stations wore pajamas in honor of the Pancakes and Pajamas theme. At Fitzwater’s station, bags containing craft items and other age-appropriate activities for each family were handed out. “We ask parents to take photos of them doing the activities to share,” said Fitzwater. The next to the last station featured Three Cords Bound band playing Christmas tunes. “The band plays every

year, so they were happy to perform outside,” said Fitzwater. The final station featured a visit with Santa Claus. “We tried to think of things the kids could enjoy and give them something they could look at,” said Fitzwater. More information about GiGi’s Playhouse may be found by visiting www.gigis playhouse.org/lancaster or searching for “GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster” on Facebook.

The Samaritan Counseling Center’s annual Ethics in Business program will accept nominations through Friday, Jan. 15. This award program is an annual recognition of companies and organizations that demonstrate excellence in the areas of integrity, fairness and justice, stewardship, life enhancement, and transparency. Following the deadline, each organization must officially accept the nomination prior to the extensive review process. The review process includes the provision of policy manuals, mission and value statements, and other procedural documents by each nominee. It also includes an employee survey and a virtual or in-person site visit from trained site visitors who are members of the local business community. Additionally, the center partners with Franklin & Marshall College students in a Corporate

Responsibility class, with students providing in-depth research on each nominee. All the information collected is then compiled into a multipage report, which is provided to an anonymous selection committee made up of business owners and industry leaders within the Lancaster County community. After deliberation, the committee selects the award recipient. An evening awards ceremony honors all nominees and announces the recipient. This event is currently scheduled for Thursday, July 22, 2021. Nominations can be submitted to the center until 5 p.m. on Jan. 15. They may be completed at https://scclanc.org/ethics -in-business/ethics-in-busi ness-nomination-form. A print form may also be obtained by calling the Samaritan Counseling Center at 717-560-9969.

Jesus was born that we might experience salvation, hope and love. He came to this earth in meekness, as one of us who is approachable. Christmas, it’s a great time to heal and restore your body, mind and soul through the power and presence of Jesus Christ.

Poiema. The Greek word pronounced “poy-A-muh” appears in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus in the Christian Bible. “We are (God’s) workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,” reads the English Standard Version (ESV) of Ephesians 2:10. Poiema, which the ESV translates as “workmanship,” can also mean “masterpiece, artwork, handiwork, or craftsmanship.” “They’re metaphors that really resound with an artist,” said Jeremy Miller, founder and CEO of Poiema Visual Arts. “That verse is pivotal because … your worth isn’t from what you’ve made but what the Creator has made. But you have to do something with it.”

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and the Lancaster Symphony Chorus will present their 12th annual “Sounds of the Season” concert. The free performance will be available to view throughout the holiday season at www.lancastersymphony.org and on the LSO’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. The annual tradition, delivered virtually, will allow families to enjoy the performance from the safety and comfort of their home. The performance will feature the musicians of the LSO and more than 50 members of the Lancaster Symphony Chorus under the leadership of William Wright. Special guests will include Lancaster’s Andrew Kindig in a musical narration of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” and local tenor Brenton Megee singing “O Holy Night.” For additional information about the LSO and to view the performance, readers may visit the aforementioned website or LSO’s social media. The organization’s mission is to facilitate discipleship, education, and community for Christian visual artists in Pennsylvania. The initial focus is on Berks, Chester, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. The board has set goals to make connections with churches to give leaders the tools to embrace artistry within their congregations; host biennial conferences, with the first planned for 2023; acquire an unused church building to develop as a sacred space, art gallery, maker space, coffee shop, and store for art supplies and artand faith-related books; and develop educational partnerships with colleges and universities. Currently, the organization is building a database of artists and supporters who would like to be apprised of progress, and it is seeking legal assistance for the application for 401(c)(3) status. “We’re praying our way forward,” Miller commented. To learn more about Poiema Visual Arts and to be added to the digital mailing list, individuals may visit www.poiemavisualarts.org.

R066944

Jeremy Miller has founded Poiema Visual Arts to inspire and encourage Christians in artistic pursuits.

Miller, who lives with his wife and son in Akron and is the resident teaching artist at Strasburg-Heisler Library, was influenced by his grandparents’ participation in folk art. As a youth, he was active in music performance and theater. While earning a bachelor’s degree in Bible at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), Miller wrestled with reconciling his artistic gifts with his faith. “I’m a Christian and an artist, and I don’t know how to do both,” Miller told his adviser. The outcome of that conversation involved a year of study and the construction of a theological framework for Miller’s gifts. Over the next two decades, as Miller and his family moved to Austria, Virginia, Texas, and back to Pennsylvania, he earned master’s degrees in biblical studies and Christian education, and he developed the dream of a venue where artists could build community while deepening their faith in Christ. In October 2019, Miller met with a group of visual artists to invite them to participate in creating Poiema Visual Arts. Although the pandemic has slowed down the process somewhat, the team drafted a statement of faith focusing on orthodox, Gospelcentered beliefs, and in August, it opened applications for board members. Currently, five of the 10 positions are vacant, and applications will be accepted until they are filled.

Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS) held its annual Trash-a-Thon in October. Instead of the school’s regular one-day event, patron families social distanced and spent the month of October picking up as much litter as possible with the goal to fill at least one trash bag. Many families worked hard to live out “Serving Is Our Strength, one of the school’s core values, and filled multiple bags to help the environment and serve the community. The community in turn has also blessed the school through this fundraiser. Students reached out to ask people to sponsor them for picking up litter. Through the donations, the school was also able to access a challenge fund to help meet the monetary goal for its operating budget. The following businesses donated prizes to the families that met their goal with the most sponsors: Ephrata Strength and Conditioning, Refreshing Mountain, Aaron’s Books, The The Kline sisters, (from left) Alexa, Anica, and AdiLancaster Sweet Shoppe, and lyn, participated in Lititz Area Mennonite School’s Lancaster Cupcake.
