TAMI HEIM IS
Fair Book Cover Contest Winner By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
When you look at the cover of this year’s West Lampeter Fair premium book, you are enjoying the creative work of this year’s cover photo contest winner, Tami Heim. Traditionally, the cover design for the premium book has featured a photograph taken at the previous year’s fair. Several years ago, the fair board created a contest in order to attract more photo options for the cover. Heim has entered the contest in past years, placing second and third, but this is her first time as the winner. “I just enjoy taking pictures. I like to capture the moment and make memories with my family,” said Heim, who took the winning photo with her Nikon digital camera. Heim took her first photography class this year at the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design in Lancaster. “I have now, finally, taken the camera off of automatic,” she said. “Now I realize I’m not the only person who starts framing pictures in their brain.” Heim and her husband, Bob, moved to the area in 2000, and she quickly became familiar with the fair. She has enjoyed attending the fair, and she has entered pieces in the photography and flower-arranging categories on occasion. “We still have a very traditional fair. The community enjoys getting together,” she said. “I think it’s wonderful. We can thank God for what he has given us.” Walking through the various displays, Heim sees many positive things. “I like to look at other people’s photographs; I think about the creativity in the
various venues and the creativity in the products,” she said. She also enjoys the imagination and effort displayed in the baby parade in all the creativity behind the costumes and the floats. Heim submitted two photos to the contest this year, one of a blue ribbon hanging from a plant and the other of two bushel baskets of apples with blue ribbons and older fair books in the background. The latter photograph Tami Heim (right) enjoys won. “To me, it’s what’s symbolic attending the West Lamof the West Lam- peter Fair with her huspeter Fair,” she ex- band, Bob, and a camera in hand. One of her photos plained. Even if she were was selected for the cover not entering the of the West Lampeter Fair contest, Heim premium book for 2016. would be taking photographs at the fair. “I would take them anyway,” she said, explaining that she usually goes to the fair at least twice – once as a chaperone with her grandson’s school class and again on her own. As you visit the fair this year, keep your camera handy and you could be the next cover contest winner.

Taking One For The Team
2015 FAIR QUEEN COMPETED TO SERVE HER CLUB By Dayna M. Reidenouer Chelsea Hancock is the first person from the Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School ski and snowboard club to ever enter the West Lampeter Fair Queen competition. She is also the first person from the club to win the crown. Chelsea had not planned to enter the competition, but when club adviser Jeff Landis suggested that she participate, she accepted out of gratitude for Landis’ service to the club. “He does so much for the club. How could I say no to him?” Chelsea said. “(The contest) was fun because it was a fun group of girls and (we got) dolled up, but I did it for (Jeff and) the club.” That decision changed the course of Chelsea’s senior year. She was already busy participating with Pioneer Interact and High School Heroes, as well as serving as class president, Student Council co-president, football team manager, ski and snowboard club vice president, and school board representative; taking Advanced Placement courses; and making the distinguished honor roll. Chelsea now also had to write an essay about what the West Lampeter Fair meant to her. Later, after winning the title, she attended fair board meetings, appeared in local parades, and gave speeches to civic organizations. “As school board representative, I had to update them on student activities, so I was used to being (in front of people),” Chelsea said. “That definitely helped with the interview (portion of the competition).” Chelsea’s family includes her parents, Wendy Hancock and Bill Musante of Lancaster and Chris Hancock of Chester County, as well as her older brother, Kyle Hancock. Wendy, Bill, and Kyle attended the fair queen competition to cheer on Chelsea, but although they knew she was a successful public speaker, they were all a bit stunned by the outcome. “She’s always been good at public speaking, but to see her get up there and shine and hit a home run (was amazing),” Wendy said. “Confidence is huge. Being the fair queen is a difficult role if you don’t believe in yourself, but she’s good at

that: she’s just always who she is.” Self-confidence is key to competing and to serving as fair queen, Chelsea said. At the ice cream social Chelsea held this summer for the teens who will be competing for the 2016 title, she advised them to stay true to themselves. “Be confident. Don’t try to be who you think the judges want,” Chelsea said. “They’ll like you better if you’re genuine.” Even though serving as fair queen was never on her bucket list, Chelsea is grateful to have been chosen for the role. She feels as though she experienced personal growth, and she developed a deeper appreciation for the West Lampeter Fair and the agricultural community in general. “The fair is an eye-opening (agricultural experience). (It showed me) this is where the food in my refrigerator comes from,” Chelsea said. “The fair … totally solidified my respect for (farmers). The fair, for me, is an appreciation of that culture. As fair queen, I got immersed in that culture.” Competing at the state fair queen pageant in January was also educational. “The big takeaway was that there are a lot of different fairs (across the state). A lot of them have agricultural backgrounds,” Chelsea remarked. Chelsea now attends the University of Pittsburgh, where she is studying biology on the pre-health track. She hopes to go to medical school, with the goal of becoming an OB/GYN. Although she is excited about this next phase in her life, she will miss serving as fair queen. In particular, she will miss interactions with her youngest fans. “The little girls look at me with such awe (when I’m wearing my crown),” Chelsea said. “I’m so excited about the chance to make a difference with little girls. I tell them, ‘Be nice to everybody; don’t be in cliques.’” Chelsea and Wendy credited fair queen coordinators Anita Martin and Tina Shockey with making Chelsea’s reign successful.

FFA members from Lampeter-Strasburg and Penn Manor high schools, as well as the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, are among the participants in the milk contest at the West Lampeter Fair each year. The youths and adult entrants compete in separate divisions. Department chair James Barnett encourages dairy farmers - junior farmers in particular - to take part in the competition. Contestants provide a sample of milk from the bulk tank so that it is representative of the milk from their entire herd of dairy cattle. The samples undergo several tests. The bacteria test shows how many colony-forming units are in a portion of milk. The somatic cell test is a significant indicator of milk quality, as it evaluates the evidence of immune responses to infection-causing pathogens. The preliminary incubation count assesses the number of cold-tolerant bacteria, which could damage milk components even when the milk is refrigerated. Entries are compared, and awards are based on the best test results. “The better the count, the longer the milk will keep,” Barnett said, noting that a good score reflects on the cleanliness of the dairy operation and the health of the cows. Barnett has been running the contest for the past 12 to 15 years. When he started, he was working for Land O’Lakes, which sponsors the contest. Since his retirement in 2009, he has continued to chair the department at the fair. The milk contest usually brings out a competitive field of entrants. Many of the junior competitors in this year’s contest will also be exhibiting their dairy cattle at the fair. The milk samples are taken for testing a week before the fair. Results are posted on Tuesday evening near the fair office and the fruit and flower displays. Barnett is a big supporter of the West Lampeter Fair and its tradition of focusing on agriculture. “It’s a very important thing to educate the public about the agricultural community. It’s important to keep it agricultural,” he said. In addition to being educational, the fair also offers great fun for the entire community. Like everyone, Barnett has his own favorite part of the fair. “I love coming over to get a milkshake and a hamburger,” he said.

Pedal Tractor Pull
Strength & Determination
By Dayna M. Reidenouer “Pedal, pedal, pedal!” is the cry heard on Friday night at the West Lampeter Fair each year. Since its introduction more than 20 years ago by John Hess, the pedal tractor pull competition has been a popular event at the fair. Crowds of people surround a roped-off lane as, one by one, contestants pedal their hardest in hopes of pulling a weighted sled the greatest distance in their respective class. “I saw it at another fair and thought it would be fun to have it at (the West Lampeter Fair),” Hess recalled. “It was a great success the first year. We had tons of kids doing it.” Initially, the contest was geared toward children and teens, but Hess noticed that adults were interested in testing their mettle, so he expanded the competition. “The adult class became almost as fun (as the children’s classes),” Hess said. He noted that often, braggadocio was quelled once the contestants began to pedal, and men who were big and buff from hours in the gym did not pull as well as their slighter, wiry counterparts. “It’s not always the size (of the competitor). It’s not so much what you do; it’s how you do it,” Hess remarked. “(New contestants) don’t realize what it takes to move (the tractor and sled) up the hill.” Tractors of various sizes are used for the competition, with the youngest competitors using the smallest tractors. A sled is attached to the tractor, and a device on the sled moves in such a way as to make the sled more difficult to drag the farther it goes. Weights are added to the sled according to the age group. If two or more contestants pull

the sled past the 75-foot capacity of the measuring tape, they each pull again with more weight on the sled. “We start (the classes) at age 4, as it takes some strength to do it,” Hess said. “We try to help the kids; we give them a push off and see how long they can keep (the momentum) going.” The entrants in the 4-year-old class pull an unweighted sled. Hess said parents have asked to have their 3-year-olds try, but the tykes are always unable to budge the sled. Hess runs the competition, and he competes in it. Several years ago, he added a 55-and-older age group so that he could continue to compete. Hess said that although the conditions of knees and backs tend to prohibit many of his peers from entering the competition, he has always been able to round up competitors. “We still have 10 or 12 guys in 55 and up doing it,” he said. “I’d like to see more older people doing it. It’s fun for those who like adventure and challenge.” When Hess introduced the pedal tractor pull competition, ribbons were awarded as prizes. Over the years, Hess expanded on the prize offerings by soliciting items and cash donations from area businesses. Last year, he was able to award approximately $500 in prizes. “We want the people to get excited about doing it,” Hess explained. Hess said he would not be surprised to hear that people practice for the pedal tractor pull. For everyone who competes, though, he offered these words of wisdom: “It’s an awful lot of sheer determination." "Keep your butt in the seat, pedal hard, and steer straight.”
