How to use your Reading and Video Log For learners of a second language, one cannot over-accentuate the importance of everyday exposure to English to improve your vocabulary and comprehension of the target language. Quite simply put, the more regularly you expose yourself to the target language, the faster you’ll improve your abilities in that language. This Reading and Video Log has been created to help you take advantage of the written texts and videos that you read or watch on a regular basis. Part 1: Reading Read every day. Schedule some time each day for reading and writing something in English. Ideally this should be a few hours each day, however realistically speaking, 15 to 30 minutes is optimal and easy to work into even the busiest of schedules. Select your reading materials Choose something that interests you. Motivation is the key here and you should select your texts based on subjects that will peak your curiosity and hold your attention. If you’re interested in sports, read the sports column of the newspaper (print or on line). If you’re more a literature fan, choose a chapter of a novel that you would like to read in English. Other examples of shorter texts include, but are not limited to: Magazine articles, scientific papers, book and product reviews, blogs, graphic novels, travel logs, breaking news reports, etc. With the wealth of publications made available through the Internet, the choices are almost endless. Visit EnglishCaddy.org/readinglog.htm for sources and ideas for your reading entries. Part 2: Videos View your videos in English instead of your native language. Today with the Internet we are fortunate enough to have access to a myriad of short videos produced by both professional and amateur native speakers of English. With sites like Youtube, you can easily find free videos on any subject matter that interests you. Select your viewing material. But Youtube is not the only one, there are also sites with free videos that you can use to improve your English and complement your principal studies. Sites like iBio Seminars and TED Ed. Remember the quality of the video is important, look for well-produced, well-researched and well-spoken videos. Visit EnglishCaddy.org/ecdocumentaries.htm for more suggestions for your video log entries. How to proceed: Once you’ve selected your text or video it’s important that you make the most of the selected material you have in front of you. To help improve your comprehension and increase your vocabulary, follow these steps: A. Read or Watch the material first without stopping to look up words. B. Reread or Re-watch the material and note or highlight all words that are unknown or unclear to you. C. Then among those words, Choose only 5 key words to enter into your log. D. Summarize the material you have just read or viewed. Keep this relatively short, no more than the space allotted. E. Give/show your entry to a teacher or a friend to review. You can also use your entry to have a conversation in English with your teacher or friend, further cementing what you've just learned. Some final tips: Most important is to make this task a pleasure, choose texts and videos that are interesting to you. If you like fishing, then look for materials on fishing. If you like space exploration, look for materials on space. If you like traveling, look for materials on different world destinations. If you like Justin Bieber, well... that'll be your secret. How many Reading Logs can you complete? How many different varieties of materials can you find? What new subjects can you explore? How much time per day can dedicate to exposing yourself to English? You only have knowledge to gain!
