”And I also know how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong but to feel strong, to measure yourself at least once, to find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions, facing blind, deaf stone alone, with nothing to help you but your own hands and your own head. . . .” - Primo Levi “Bear Meat”

Intro and Welcome One of the key tenets of American transcendentalism is self-reliance. That is we only have ourselves to depend on, and we must prepare and test ourselves in order to achieve independence. This applies to both mental and physical abilities. We must do what we can to keep our bodies and minds physically fit and agile in order to survive and succeed in the varying situations life will put us in. A perfect example is the situation of a class test or exam. Prior to such a test or exam, you study, read and work to understand the subject matter that you will be tested on because you know that during the test you will have to be self-reliant, you will not be able to depend on anyone but yourself. While tests are announced, many situations we encounter on a daily basis are not. Therefore it is important to keep your mind in shape so that no matter what comes, you will be able to react with the utmost agility and success. One way to keep your mind nimble and quick is of course reading, but another way is to constantly exercise and challenge your brain with puzzles, hypothetical challenges. While this booklet (keeping in the theme of “Into the Wild”) was created as a task for EnglishCaddy's annual English Challenge But, it was also no less created in the hopes of introducing you to the necessity of regularly exercising your brain and encouraging your to nurture your self-reliance. Good luck and most importantly work fun! This booklet was created for educational purposes. For further activities or materials of this kind, please visit EnglishCaddy.org

Logic Before All Else

How is your logic and reasoning? Here is a puzzle to help you test and train your brain. Carefully read the paragraph and the clues below, use the grid to help you and fill in your answers in the space provided. Good Luck! Five campers (one is Laura), were on their way to go camping and they were each given fruit baskets with different kinds of fruit in them (one kind is bananas). Each basket has a different number of fruit (one basket has 7 pieces). From the clues below can you determine which camper has which kind(s) of fruit and how many pieces of fruit they each have?

Clues ✔ Chris's basket has more than the one with the limes, but less than that of basket with the apples. ✔ Cyril's basket of five pieces of fruit contains neither bananas nor lemons. ✔ Laura's basket contains more pieces of fruit than either Cyril's or Lily's (combined). ✔ The basket with oranges contains either 5 or 7 total. ✔ The basket with lemons (which is not Laura's), contains not less than 9 pieces of fruit. ✔ Lily's basket contains bananas. ✔ There are fewer pieces of fruit in Laura's basket containing apples than that of the basket containing lemons.

Banana Lime Orange Apple Lemon 3 5 7 9 11

Cyril Florent Lily Chris Laura 3 5 7 9 11

Cyril has _____ _________s Florent has _____ _________s Lily has _____ _________s Chris has _____ _________s Laura has _____ _________s 8

Chillax and Disconnect Being “connected”with smart phones and the internet has its benefits, but sometimes we need to disappear into our own minds to exercise them in other ways. Coloring isn't just for kids, in adults it helps us “de-stress” by generating feelings of calm and wellness. Coloring also stimulates the areas of our brains responsible for creativity, motor skills and imagination. So put down your iPhone and pick up some crayons or colored pencils and connect to your own brain.

I hope you found coloring a nice conclusion to some mind bending puzzles.
