The Ultimate Zombie Puzzle book FRom the Zombie challenge Dossier

The end of the world is coming and the zombie apocalypse is bound to be upon us shortly. You will need to be at your best physical and mental performance if you expect to be one of the few that survive. In addition to your physical regime, this booklet is the perfect supplement of hypothetical situations and cognitive conundrums designed to sharpen your mind so that it may best deal with stress in the years to come.

N This booklet was created in the interest of education and more specifically, students of English, hence the emphasis of word based activities. That being said, this puzzle book is also free to be enjoyed by anyone who finds themselves fascinated by the zombie genre or word puzzles. In its lighthearted spirit, none of its contents are to be taken too seriously. Yet, one lesson that can be drawn is that preparedness in the face of emergencies is vital. To quote the Center for Disease Control: “If you’re ready for the zombie apocalypse you’re ready for any emergency.” www.cdc.gov I hope that you enjoy this booklet, and for more English based activities feel free to visit EnglishCaddy.org/zombie.htm

It’s the beginnings of the outbreak and the you’re in the middle! Do you have the navigational skills to escape the apocalyptic melee without finding yourself at a dead end? 6

Messages, signs, warnings written by survivors on buildings, trees, or sidewalks in paint, coal or blood are everywhere you look. Making sense of anything in a world gone mad is going to be a challenge. But make sense of it you must! For these messages might not be written in vain. Each of the scrambled words below will give you valuable information to solve the greater truism.

From Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion Unscramble each of the clue words. Take the letters that appear in

boxes and unscramble them for the final message.

A group of humans have taken up safe residence in an abandoned prison during the zombie apocalypse. One of the men has been found guilty of murdering one of his fellow humans with a knife. As a punishment, the leaders of the group have offered the man a choice of being locked away in one of three rooms. The first room is filled with rabid zombies. The second room is filled with pack wolves that haven’t eaten in over a year. The third room sits over a gas leak and is constantly filled with poisonous gas. Which is the safest room for the killer to choose? Why? Your response:

Know your pathogens! In the news we all too frequently hear about outbreaks of nightmarish diseases such as SARS, MERS and Ebola tragically destroying lives and decimating families. Fortunately, world healthcare agencies have been successful in slowing and/or stopping the spread of these diseases thereby limiting the number of humans affected. However, in our history, virulent strains have run unchecked killing large populations of people. Knowing the events of the past are important for detecting patterns for the future. Will the zombie apocalypse be caused by a virulent pathogen? Will you be able to recognize it when it does? First match the brief histories with the name of the disease they represent, then label the images of the pathogen. (You may need to do some research on this one.)

The Spanish Flu (A/H5N1) The Black Death

The Swine Flu (p/H1N1) Polio (poliovirus)

HIV/AIDS Typhus

This disease has existed since antiquity however, for reasons unknown, it became a worldwide pandemic in 1952 with 60,000 reported cases in the United States alone. Currently infecting a large portion of the world’s population with no known cure or vaccine. It’s first reported case was in the Congo in 1959 and has affected an estimated 60 million people worldwide with a reported death toll of 35 million in 2012. 1918 an estimated 50 million people died worldwide affecting 1/3 of the world’s population at the time and propagated in part by the close fighting conditions of World War II. 2009 killing approximately 200,000 people worldwide with irregular distribution. 0.4 deaths per thousand in Australia, 0.3 deaths per thousand in France and 2.8 deaths per thousand in the United States. While still active in the world today this epidemic reached its peak in 1922 with between 25 and 30 million cases. 14th century. This was actually an epidemic of 3 plagues (Bubonic, Pneumonic and Septicemic) killing off one fourth of Europe’s population at the time.

It’ll take a sharp eye to survive in a zombie infested world! You will need to learn to be ever-alert while you quickly scavenge for supplies all the while constantly scanning your environs for zombie movement. Hone your skills here and find the words in the sea of letters above. 11

The following are some hypothetical situations you may be faced with during the outbreak. Are your math skills good enough to solve the following 4 problems? Don’t forget to show your computation. You are running low on ammunition, so you decide to go to town and scavenge for more bullets. Luckily you find four boxes of bullets to add to the half-full box that you already have. If each box holds eighty bullets how many bullets do you now have?

Rick must scavenge for food and supplies at least 12 hours per week in order to have enough stock for he and his group to survive. He must also spend 10 more hours sleeping than scavenging so that he can keep up his strength and remain healthy. What is the minimum number of hours Rick must sleep in order to have enough energy to scavenge for supplies?

You and a buddy are ambushed by a zombie! Your buddy has been bitten and transformed into a zombie and tries to attack and chase you as you run away. You need to get 10 kilometers away from him, so you run at your top speed of 5 kilometers per hour while your infected buddy can only chase you at 3 kilometers per hour. How much time will it take before you are a safe 10 kilometers ahead of your ex-buddy?

Two groups of survivors have joined forces for a total of 18 people. However, in order to divide up the supplies fairly, you need to know how many survivors were in each group. Two times the amount of survivors in the smaller group decreased by 3 equals the number of survivors in the larger group. How many people were there in each of the two groups when they joined?
