We are taking Swan Lake and Coppélia out on tour, Christmas sees us at the London Coliseum for our annual Nutcracker followed by Swan Lake and in Spring you will find us at Sadler’s Wells in London with a programme of three outstanding ballets from the second half of the 20th Century, Modern Masters.

ENGLISH NATIONAL BALLET’S
NEW SEASON This year’s programme demonstrates our twin aims of cherishing the great works of the classical repertoire and keeping them fresh and relevant for today’s audiences as well as introducing brave new works into the repertoire – the classics of tomorrow.
Swan Lake is perhaps the most famous ballet in the classical repertoire and Odette/Odile is the most desirable and challenging role for a ballerina, requiring her to be both the innocent pure and honest white swan and the evil, manipulative and erotic black swan. It also has incredibly demanding and iconic dancing for the corps de ballet, great opportunities for male virtuouso dancing not to mention Tchaikovsky’s wonderful music. Alina Cojocaru opens the season in Manchester with our new principal Alejandro Virelles and for our London season we are joined by two brilliant guest artists Ivan Vasiliev and Alban Lendorf as Siegfried. Our production of Coppélia – the perfect family ballet – has been in the Company for 30 years but is as fresh as it was when first created. Our recent performances in London drew praise from critics and audiences alike as a new generation of dancers took the lead and gave new life to the story of the Swanilda, her wayward fiancé Franz and the eccentric Dr Coppélius. If the role of Odette/Odile is the most challenging for a ballerina in the classical repertoire then that of Swanilda is surely the most fun!
children. Wayne Eagling is refreshing his production of the ballet which comes complete with the hot air balloon and the charming Edwardian skating sequence. Ksenia Ovsyanick and Katja Khaniukova both make their debuts in the lead, becoming the latest Claras in our long history with the ballet. Modern Masters at Sadler’s Wells provides a stark contrast to the 19th Century classics. Part of my ambition for the Company is to introduce fresh and challenging choreography to take you the audience, and our dancers, to new and exciting places. I programmed Jiří Kylián’s captivating Petite Mort in my first season to the delight of audiences and dancers and am now reprising it alongside pieces by choreographers new to the Company: In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated by William Forsythe and Spring and Fall by John Neumeier. They are three thrilling ballets and we are privileged to have them in our repertoire. We remain committed to encouraging and developing the talents of our dancers. I am delighted that our Emerging Dancer Competition, now established as a popular fixture of the London ballet calendar, returns in March at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. Choreographics, our platform for aspiring choreographers in the Company, will also return in June at Sadler’s Wells. We do hope you will join us – we are sure that there will be something to excite and delight you.
Christmas means Nutcracker, an essential part of the festive season for many ballet lovers and the first taste of ballet for generations of young

The world’s favourite classical ballet The story of Prince Siegfried’s love for the Swan Queen Odette, their battle against the evil sorcerer, Rothbart, and a fateful encounter with the manipulative Odile is revealed in English National Ballet’s acclaimed production of Swan Lake. Beloved for its exquisite dancing, beautiful sets and Tchaikovsky’s glorious music, played by the Orchestra of English National Ballet, this Swan Lake is a thrill for the dedicated ballet fan or first-time ballet-goer.

SWAN LAKE NATIONAL TOUR
She’s a walking, talking, living doll Swanilda is engaged to Franz but he has his eye on the mysterious girl sitting on the balcony of Dr Coppelius’s house. Franz doesn’t realise that she is a doll whom the toymaker is trying to bring to life and when Swanilda and her friends sneak into the Doctor’s workshop it looks as though he has succeeded. Love triumphs over all in this comedy of mistaken identity and the finale is a joyful celebration of the lovers’ wedding. Coppélia is an enchanting, family ballet, perfect for young and old alike. Delibes’s irresistibly melodic score is performed by the Orchestra of English National Ballet.

COPPÉLIA NATIONAL TOUR
The magical Christmas tradition for all the family On a sparkling Christmas Eve in a frost-dusted Edwardian London, Clara and her enchanted Nutcracker doll discover a magical world, where she battles with the Mouse King and meets a handsome stranger. As the air grows colder, Clara and her valiant Nutcracker take a hot air balloon ride across London to the glistening Land of Snow where her adventure really begins. With iconic choreography and the Orchestra of English National Ballet performing Tchaikovsky’s soaring score (featuring the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Waltz of the Flowers), English National Ballet’s Nutcracker is an unmissable Christmas treat for the whole family.

The thrill of the new Modern Masters honours the work of three of the most influential and creative choreographers of the 20th Century, and brings two new works to English National Ballet’s repertoire. PETITE MORT Created in 1991, Jiří Kylián’s poetic piece, features six men, six women, and six fencing foils, symbolising energy, silence and sexuality. Performed to the slow movements of two Mozart Piano Concerti, the foils slowly become dancing partners, as the brutality of everyday life is revealed. Petite Mort is a quintessential Kylián masterwork, loved by our audience and our dancers when we performed it last year. SPRING AND FALL In the same year that Petite Mort was premiered, Hamburg Ballet’s John Neumeier, a new master of narrative and dramatic ballet, created Spring and Fall. Set to the Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings in E Major, it is a work for two couples and corps de ballet and takes its narrative from the tension in the music. Spring and Fall is not in the repertoire of any other UK company. IN THE MIDDLE, SOMEWHAT ELEVATED With In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, William Forsythe started a completely new school of choreography, deconstructing classical ballet and liberating a new generation of classical dancers to show off their abilities. Set against a bare stage it is danced by nine individuals culminating in a fierce display of technical and physical wizardry.

Introducing children to the magic of ballet Swan Lake is the latest of the classics to be recreated for young children in the My First series, the unique collaboration between English National Ballet and English National Ballet School. The performances are specially created to make classical ballet accessible and enjoyable to children from the age of three upwards. Following on the success of Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Coppélia, My First Ballet: Swan Lake is created by English National Ballet’s Associate Artist George Williamson and performed by second year students from English National Ballet School. With a narrator to help the young audience follow the story, and Tchaikovsky’s wonderful music, this is the perfect way to introduce children to classical ballet.
