ny sensitive, intelligent person can see that modern society revolves around acquiring material possessions, from adding a wing to the house to buying a gold pinky ring. This obsession with acquiring “things,” and the money that buys them, has some serious ramifications, such as fostering a self-centered and self-serving attitude. Enter the phenomenon of free loaning and doing chesed. Lend out a book, an article of clothing, or a sum of money, and see how the emphasis gets taken off the thing and put on the people involved, in a spirit of one human being happily helping another. You are now engaged in an interaction that is free of any hidden agenda for self-aggrandizement or profit. And in the highly competitive profit-centered world, when you don’t take anything for what you give and just give, that’s revolutionary. Chava Dumas reminded me that there is always something you can give to another person, even if it’s someone who appears to possess everything he or she could possibly need. She pointed out that both Rabbeinu Yonah and the Rambam add to the Mishnah in Pirkei Avos that the primary goal of personal interactions is to bring simcha to others. A timely smile or encouraging compliment can have a life-changing impact on a person in need of support. Her suggestion for a smile gemach was simple: “If you see someone without a smile, give him one of yours!” Our Rosh Hashanah issue of the magazine focuses on the many creative ways of giving in the Jewish world. Quite often, the giving takes place behind the scenes, is done anonymously, and rarely gets any public recognition. Yet, along with davening and learning, doing acts of loving kindness stands as one of the pillars that keeps the world in existence. Every year on Rosh Hashanah, we again crown Hashem as our king whose purpose in Creation was to shower abundant goodness on His creations. In response to His infinite acts of loving kindness, He only asks that we let Him into our lives and maintain with Him a living, ever-growing, and intimate relationship. This Rosh Hashanah, may we all be privileged to draw closer to Him as we open our hearts wide to receive His blessings.
To me Yerushalayim is
Kikar HaShabbos Zichron Moshe and Meuchedet Being a Yerushalmi means much more than just living in Yerushalayim. It means appreciating the special atmosphere, cool summer evenings, eating chulent on Thursday nights near Mir and being able to daven maariv in Zichron Moshe, even at 2 am.
Being a Yerushalmi means belonging to Meuchedet.

have been multiplying lately, and it echoes the way the non-Jewish world feels about us. But, this sh should not bother us at all, for the Ribono shel Olam thinks we are roses. Below are a number of ideas I heard in different shuirim. In Shir HaShirim, Am Yisroel is compared to a “rose among the thorns” referring to the fact they are the “rose” of holiness, purity, and goodness found among the coarse nations around them. A rose has 13 petals. Elul’s letters read out the possuk “Ani l’dodi v’dodi li. . .,” the verse continues “. . .haro’eh b’shoshanim.” The Ari says Elul and the ten days of teshuva between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the time of the 13 middos of mercy, symbolized by the 13 petals of the rose. As a rose is surrounded in 13 leaves (petals) that protect it, so too is Am Yisrael surrounded with the 13 middos of mercy which protect it. May we all be blessed with a year that is a glorious, sweet smelling rose garden without any thorns.
for healthy growth. Releasing the Inner Child is a psychological process. It has adherents and dissenters. But, to try to use such a process on a comfortable chair alone in your living room is downright dangerous. Any psychological process must be treated with extreme care and understanding, usually with a well-trained mental health professional and not alone. It is wrong to think that only the sweet child will appear, and what you release may not be so easily put back again. Those who suffered trauma or even a dramatic experience in their past are most vulnerable, and may not even realize it consciously because they were quite young. These self-produced flashbacks may cause PTSD, or worse, nervous breakdowns or suicidal thoughts – and who is going to be there to pick up the pieces, if one is alone? Chazal teach us that forgetting certain things is actually a bracha. We can learn from previous mistakes, but that is in order to move on with life and growth. Our mind is our most precious possession. Let’s not take it for granted. Handle with care.

-A Concerned Reader
I READ NECHAMA WACHSMAN’S ARTICLE “The Child Within” with great trepidation. What sounds so sweetly innocent can really be a Pandora’s box in disguise. If someone had a very nice, uneventful childhood, s/he will be, most of the time, a welladjusted adult, with the childhood experience enhancing and developing adult life. Even one who had a turbulent childhood may have consciously or subconsciously used those experiences
I GREATLY APPRECIATED YOUR ARTICLE BY Yardena Slater on boosting your health during Elul. I am also a fan of your recipes that are not only delicious but they don’t rely on all those questionable and chemical ingredients. When it comes to my family, I’d rather have healthy than gourmet. Please keep these kinds of articles coming.

72.8 million. That’s what the painting ““White Center (Yellow, Pink, and Lavender on Rose)” sold for at auction. L It’s and while the art world considers IIt an a abstract, abst it a tremendous work of art, if you’d see it and tre tr rem eme not familiar with it, you’d be skeptical if it was n tb no be fa worth orth o ort rth 72 dollars, let alone 72 million dollars. And yet, it went for $72 million and changeA to a wealthy buyer from Qatar. To be specific, it was purchased by Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa AlThani, of the Qatari royal family. But wait. The painting itself is only part of the story. It’s the provenance of the painting that makes it worth that tremendous multiple. And that’s why the provenance, or prior owner history, is so important. The painting is so valuable because the previous owner was David Rockefeller. In fact, the painting is informally referred to as “Rockefeller’s Rothko.” Mr. Rockefeller bought the painting in 1960 for less than $10,000 from Eliza Bliss Parkinson. It’s the BIRG, or Basking In Reflected Glory, that is really what makes this painting so valuable in the art world. In all likelihood, it’s the value by implication that makes Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifabe willing to spend that kind of money on it. The American oil magnate’s painting, now hanging by the Qatari oil magnate, gives the fellow from Qatar a certain sense of legitimacy and feeling of equal footing and status as a financial titan. In your business, art or otherwise, the same psychological factors are at play. If you are an artist, where else is your work seen? (Maybe you ought to send a painting as a gift to some world leaders. If it hangs in one of their homes or offices, you may have just increased the value of all your works by a multiple of several.) It’s why companies send free handbags and jewelry to those who they hope will be seen and photographed wearing it. It’s why Nike and Coca Cola pay so much money to be the sponsors at major sporting events.
And it’s what influences so many of our purchase decisions, consciously and subconsciously. It’s an aspirational thing. And it’s also the reason why a restaurant or hotel might purchase a very expensive painting; because the value by association means that a $35 steak might become a $350 steak if there just so happens to be a Monet or Picasso behind it. And a $250 a night suite might be worth $25,000 a night when the right painting hangs in the room. Start thinking about how to introduce this concept into your business. Do you have (or should you start working hard on having) clients that others would like to figuratively rub shoulders with? (Remember, the Sheikh didn’t have to meet David Rockefeller to “rub shoulders and status” with him when he bought his painting.) Has your business been written up in a prestigious newspaper? Whatever form of reflected glory your business does have, or can engineer is something strongly worth considering to enable you to charge much more for what you do-- and have buyers eagerly willing to pay. By the way, one of the tricks of the trade in the jewelry business is this: If you want to have a chance of getting your jewelry into someone’s hands, you need to send two bracelets, not one. Why? I’m so glad you asked. Because the mail opener/personal handler of the person you are trying to reach will often keep the “junk mail jewelry” for themselves, and never give it to the intended recipient at all. But when you send two, one earmarked for the assistant to thank them for their help, at least the second piece now has a good chance of getting to the person you sent it to. Then the piece of jewelry just might be worn at some point, giving your brand the ability to toot your horn about it, by association. Sign up for the free weekly audio. It’s been getting rave reviews. Email englishupdate@issamar.com today and have valuable business tips sent straight to your inbox.

What is Vaad Harabbanim?
Vaad Harabbanim was founded by Gedolei Hador to supervise all charitable matters in Israel. Previously, there was no real control or organization for charitable donations and causes, with the very number of charitable funds being overwhelming, as well as problems like knowing if one´s donation really reached its goal, how monies were spent, reviews and audits of activities, etc. Understanding the scope of the problem, it was decided to establish a single, central organization that would be directed, operated, supervised and audited by dedicated and honest Rabbinical leaders. Each request for help would be carefully examined, criteria would be set, and every case would be followed up and reviewed to ensure honesty and that a person´s hard-earned donation reached its destination in full. Thanks to its wide acceptance by the Torah observant community, the Vaad was able to establish a much wider donor base and therefore meet many more needs.
Providing Salvation
The results surprised even the founders. The Vaad has become Israel´s largest charity fund, helping tens of thousands of tragic cases annually. The Vaad has helped countless widows, orphans, families and individuals overcome abject poverty, difficult lives, broken families and dealing with fatal and near-fatal illness. Posek Hador Harav Hagaon S. Wozner, shlita, has said: "The Vaad Harabbainim is the very essence of charity in its fullest sense, unlike anything else in history."
Whom to Give?
Naturally, some of the most difficult and tragic cases come to the Vaad for help, due to its size and scope. Even starving children are not an uncommon sight in the Vaad offices. It is heartbreaking when the gabbaim enter a home to investigate a particular request and are greeted with peeling walls, disconnected electricity and phone, worn-out mattresses on the floor, and filthy children dressed in rags, not to mention empty cupboards and refrigerators or children trying to manage while parents work long hours. The only address for such cases is the Vaad, but the activities don´t stop there. Seeing its role as being the largest and most centralized charity fund, the Vaad also handles "regular" needs, like making sure a child receives proper dental care, psychological counseling and the like, which can be no less important than feeding a hungry child.
Priorities
This is the most difficult issue facing the Vaad. The Vaad strives to handle every request, big or small. The Vaad Rabbis must, therefore, prioritize the caseload, and choose the most difficult and destitute cases before others. This also involves careful investigation of the facts of each case, weighing its level
12
THE ENGLISH UPDATE
of severity and deciding on how much help can be granted. Just one example: During the last campaign (High Holy Days, 5774), the Vaad had over 20 meetings that continued well into the night because of the heavy caseload and the meticulous and thorough attention devoted to each and every request. It is important to note that the Rabbis involved do so voluntarily, as they are all full-time teachers, community or neighborhood Rabbis all over Israel. It is the satisfaction of knowing that they have helped so many thousands of needy Jews that keeps them going and inspires them to even greater efforts. Priorities are set by the Gedolim, as well as the supervision of the actual distribution of the funding and the decision regarding how much to allocate for each request. The only information deemed important are the needs and facts of the case- no other factors are considered, like the applicant´s place of residence, background, community affiliation or personal lifestyle.

The Basic Foundation: Trust
One of the Vaad´s basic principles is absolute trust, which starts with the trust the Gedolei Torah have in the fund, which in turn attracts donors who trust the Gedolim. Since they know that their money will reach its destination in full and that absolute discretion will be maintained vis a vis the recipient, more and more kind and caring Jews have joined the long list of Vaad supporters. The most important factor in this trust is the meticulous and stringent adherence to halacha and honest business ethics. A full time accountant ensures that every cent is properly spent and accounted for. Special committees are appointed to investigate particular cases, and every detail regarding the veracity of information and case is filed and checked. Only after formal approval by the Vaad Rabbis is a check issued, which must carry signatures of two senior rabbanim. This highly developed trust is what distinguishes the Vaad from many other charitable funds. The Vaad considers it their basic duty not only to provide for the needy, but also to ensure that the donor is respected and confident that his hard-earned money is being used for exactly the purpose it is intended and with no overhead or administrative expenses. Yearly financial reports are prepared and submitted as required by both civil and Torah law, and are available to all those interested in seeing exactly how their generous contributions were spent. Zedakah bring closer the Geulah. May we merit our final redemption speedily in our days.

YANAR The Yanar Institute was f o u n d e d approximately 15 years ago. Until that time there was a dearth of religious Israeli professionals capable of working with marital crises. Couples in distress would either go to professionals who didn't fully understand their client's world, or rabbis and community activists who came from a similar background but weren't professionally trained. Both of these options left many “casualties along the way, and it was to counteract this that the dream for Yanar was born. The English Department of Yanar was founded nearly four years ago when Yanar brought in Rabbi Shea Lewis as its head, and it has succeeded in gaining respect as the first address for many individuals and families that are seeking help in times of crisis. Yanar operates on two fronts. Aside from the nowrenowned training institute, the daily “nachas comes
from the countless clients who come in for professional counseling and are able to turn their lives around for the better. Aside from couples’ counseling, over the years Yanar has expanded its areas of operation to other forms of counseling, including specialized programs that deal with adolescence, addiction, and abuse. More recently, Yanar has added the impressive Cognitive Behavioral Therapy program together with the Israeli board of cognitive behavioral therapist (IT"A). This has enabled Yanar to expand – now including trauma, anxiety, and other difficult situations that many families are trying to cope with. The English department recently successfully graduated their first two associates who are doing excellent clinical work within the community. Yanar believes no one should suffer in silence! No one has ever been turned away for lack of funds. Turn your life around today! If you need help or just need to speak to someone, please call the Yanar Hotline at 02-632-1606 or contact us by email at ynr.english@gmail.com. Over the past year, baruch Hashem, through their multi-faceted activities, the Shaarei Tzedek Chessed Center has been able to help thousands of precious Jews, many of them elderly and/or living alone. The organization is unique in the wide variety of services and help it provides to so many. Located in central Moscow, close to the Marina Roscha Shul and Jewish Center and the Jewish Museum and housed in a remodeled landmark building over 100 years old, the Shaarei Tzedek Center has become a life support system for many. Under the auspices of Rabbi B. Lazar, Chief Rabbi of Russia, the center assists approximately 15,000 Jews from Moscow and the surrounding area on a daily basis. The name Shaarei Tzedek depicts the plight of many of these older people who suffered merely for being Jews under the previous conditions in Russia. Now they are being afforded the tzedek – justice-- that is rightfully theirs. Through Shaarei Tzedek, the Jewish community is making sure they get the food and medical care that they need for their basic existence. Shaarei Tzedek’s building is comprised of four floors and is very impressive. The building’s basement houses a huge, fully equipped, modern kitchen that supplies thousands of meals on a daily basis. Some of the meals are served in the communal kitchen located on the first floor of the building while others are delivered to elderly and sick Jews throughout Moscow who cannot make it to the center on their own. There is a staff of trained mashgichim on the premises at all times. Also located in the basement of the building are storage rooms for basic staple food items that are distributed regularly to families/individuals meeting the criterion. There is a regular distribution of dairy products, monthly food baskets, and special baskets at holiday times. The center’s clothing gemach is housed in the basement level, as well as the headquarters for the community’s employment office, food basket distribution, and various other charitable funds. This same basement has departments which help the community’s sick and elderly with medical equipment, home assistance, medicines, adult sanitary products, etc. The spacious lobby on the entrance level gives an uplifting and dignified feeling to all those entering the Shaarei Tzedek Center, even those

coming to ask for charity or other forms of help. The staff manning the information booth provides warm and courteous service to all visitors and clients. Shaarei Tzedek’s medical center has a professional staff of over 100 professionals using state of the art equipment. There is a medical laboratory as well as a dental clinic on the premises. The entire elderly Jewish population is treated completely free of charge. Shaarei Tzedek’s medical department also provides ambulance service when necessary. Hundreds of elderly and poor individuals come every day to Shararei Tzedek’s community kitchen and dining hall for a warm main meal and much needed social interaction. The dining hall is also used for various community gatherings and programs for the seniors. Another important feature of the Shaarei Tzedek Center is the many stimulating classes in basic Judaism that it provides on a daily basis for the community. In addition, there are general occupational and therapeutic activities for the population like knitting, ceramic, sculpting, and creative writing. Classes in the Yiddish and Hebrew languages are also given to help people become familiar with Jewish literature and original Hebrew texts. The Shaarei Tzedek Library houses over 20,000 books and is also located in the center. The barber shop and beauty shop on the first floor of the building provide a really unique chessed feature. Not only can the senior citizens get their hair cut, but manicures are even provided for the ladies. A visitor to the center will also find many of the arts and crafts projects made by the seniors prominently on display. A general gemach for lending money operates out of the center, as does the chevra kadisha which ensures that every Jewish person who is niftar gets a proper burial. This year five new vehicles were added to the Shaarei Tzedek fleet for food distribution, baruch Hashem, as the number of people helped continues to increase. Acquiring an additional section in the cemetery to further guarantee free funeral and burial services for every single Jewish person was another major accomplishment of the Shaarei Tzedek Chessed Organization this year.

LAHAV Every year 25,000 secular couples are required by law to take a class in Taharas Mishpacha before they are allowed to get a marriage license. Sadly, the standard class provided by the government, in most cases, leaves these couples with a bad taste in their mouth from this religious experience. Lahav is changing this. He brightened up their world and taught them about giving by giving to them by surprise and without their having to win favor, or even ask him.

WHEN PEOPLE, NOT THINGS, W MAT TER
THE PARADIGM SHIFT There is a world that exists besides the world we know. It’s a world where every instance and every happening presents itself as an opportunity to perform a kindness for someone, and almost every object is a possible vehicle of kindness. The person who lives in that world has experienced a paradigm shift, a reprogramming, an awakening to the importance of giving to others and using the things at his disposal for giving. Think of the average person who has just finished reading a good book. The book is returned to the bookshelf, and the reader relishes a feeling of satisfaction, knowing that he can read it again whenever the spirit moves him. Now, consider a person who lives in our world of kindness. He chooses to dwell in a state of mind where the book he owns is an object to benefit others. He makes it available to anyone who wishes to borrow it and thereby enables them to receive the same pleasure and enlightenment that he enjoyed while reading it. In the world of kindness, an object such as a book has the potential to benefit hundreds of people without them incurring any costs. They don’t have to purchase it in order to receive the pleasure it affords. Now consider all the other things, like books, that can

This must sound like a utopian dream. How can such a world exist when we are so busy competing for jobs, amassing fortunes, and trying to carve out our piece of the pie? First, take a deep breath. Imagine that there is plenty for everyone. We don’t have to jostle our way in that line in order to keep our footing. Perhaps we can all win, and not just one of us be the winner and the rest of us the losers. Hashem has certainly designed the world with enough for everyone, and we can become partners with Him by offering what we have to help others. The consequences are mind-boggling. It changes the whole direction of life. When you are navigating through life, you are looking for totally different landmarks than most people. You are looking for opportunities that other people ignore or don’t even see because they haven’t developed the eyes to see them. You are building a human race that has finer characteristics than those to which we are accustomed. You are living in a world where material objects have no value in themselves; their value stems from their ability to benefit people and not only the people who own them. In the world of kindness, people, not things, take priority. It’s a revolutionary world, and it exists in the here and now. Everyone can learn to master the art of doing kindness. A person doesn’t need special qualifications like a guaranteed yearly income or a diploma from an Ivy League university. There is no admission price and no specified visiting hours. It is a precious opportunity that belongs to everyone at all times and in all circumstances.
A person with a low income, who is a giver according to his abilities, doesn’t see his own poverty because his pleasure in giving is endless. His modest house can be filled with a special quality of light and happiness that can’t be found in some palatial homes full of luxurious furnishings. The world of kindness is a world where you feel the pain, discomfort, or deprivation of another person, and you do something to help that person. We know someone who witnessed the scene in a toy store of a mother trying to find Purim costumes for her boys. She couldn’t satisfy the children’s needs with the money she could afford to spend. Our friend sympathized with the frazzled mother. She told her about some extra costumes that she could lend her, and she gave over her telephone number. Later, our friend was able to collect a number of costumes from other families, and she decided to set up a free loan for Purim costumes. She ironed the costumes, and hung them up in a corner of one of her closets. She collected all the other odds and ends, like masks, lacy aprons, and funny sunglasses, in a large laundry basket. Altogether, organizing the costumes, sewing a hole here or a button there, and showing them to her “customers” took a few hours. But who can measure the size of the kindness she did for those mothers and their children who were spared the outlay of money they didn’t have to spend and the aggravation of going from store to store looking for the right thing? Another aspect of doing kindness is giving something unexpected. There is a man in our neighborhood whose pockets are always full of cookies. The children can spot him down the block. It isn’t just the cookie that he gives to each one of them, but it’s also their feelings as they walk away with a cookie in their hand. They feel good about themselves, and see the world as a benevolent place to be. They feel appreciated just for being themselves, and they learn that good things can happen even out of the blue. I remember being warned as children about the world of strangers “out there,” adults who were giving out candy with razor blades hidden inside, or abusive individuals who offered candy to children in order to lure them into their cars and kidnap them. But that was a different world, far removed from the world of kindness. Living in that world had made me suspicious and fearful. Then I realized that the “dangerous” cookie man was
A person’s day, week, year, and their whole life could be seen as a history of the kindness they do. It could be, that after all is said and done, it is only the kindness we do that lives after us. There is a beautiful story from the Baal Shem Tov, founder of the Chassidic movement.. It tells about the Goat Man, a very poor man who was ridiculed by the townspeople for his simplicity and lack of worldly accomplishments. He worked as a water carrier, and he lived on the outskirts of the town in an old dilapidated shack. Everyone knew that he shared his hovel with a number of goats that he cared for devotedly. The Baal Shem Tov saw with his sixth sense that this man was very beloved by G-d and the Divine Presence accompanied him wherever he went. The Baal Shem was determined to find out what gave this poor, unlearned man such distinction, and through fasting and prayer, the man’s story was revealed to him. The Goat Man would secretly deposit bottles of the precious goat’s milk at the doorstep of sick people and new mothers who were recovering after birth. The milk had a miraculous healing effect, and whenever someone drank it, they immediately felt better. Why was the Goat Man such a master at doing kindness in secret? His late wife had also excelled in deeds of kindness, and after her passing, she came to him in a dream and told him that she had gone straight to Paradise on the merit of her good deeds. If her husband wanted to amass the true riches of the world, she said, he would be wise to follow her example and devote himself to acts of kindness throughout his life. Who is the greatest Master of Kindness? G-d, Himself, is constantly engaged in sustaining all of Creation through His infinite acts of kindness. It is even brought down from the teachings of the Sages that the world came into being so that G-d could bestow His goodness on others. We are the recipients of that goodness, and when we act in a like manner by doing kindness for each other, we are emulating G-d. Just as G-d created us to receive His kindness and overwhelming goodness, we need each other to receive the kindness and goodness that should overflow from us like a cup filled to the brim. Just as a mother is full with milk and needs her baby to nurse to relieve that fullness, it naturally follows that we, ourselves, receive gratification by giving from the bountiful goodness that fills us. There happens to be a free loan for mother’s milk in Jerusalem. It is a milk bank to aid babies whose mothers cannot nurse them for some reason. Nursing mothers donate extra milk, which is then frozen until it is needed. There are even volunteers who undertake certain dietary restrictions in

CREATIVE GIVING In the world at large, people are often looking for creative ways to expand their businesses and enlarge their profits. In the world of kindness, people are applying their creativity to finding new ways of benefiting each other, saving their “customers” more money, time, and energy. The possibilities seem to be endless as new forms of kindness sprout forth every day. There is a nurse living in Jerusalem whose free loan is treating children who have dislocated their shoulders. And a woman living in Telzstone who makes over garments so that they comply with the halachic guidelines of modest dress for women. In Safed, there is a free loan for musical instruments for children. For women who need a fancy pocketbook for a special occasion, there is a free loan for lending out elegant evening bags that are too expensive for most budgets. In Bnei Brak, there’s a family that does laundry loads for people whose washing machine has broken down. The list of free loans in community phone books throughout Israel are comprehensive lists of items that can be borrowed and returned after they are used -- plates and silverware for celebrations, baby cribs, wedding dresses and veils, vaporizers, blankets, chairs and tables. The list is endless and amazing. Then there are furniture and clothing gemachim that give away the goods either free of charge or at a minimal cost. In one area of Jerusalem, a family makes extra food for Shabbos every week for others who may have unexpected guests, or whose gas ran out, spoiling the cholent. If the food is not needed that Shabbos, it is given to a yeshiva or needy families after Shabbos. Basic gemachim that exist in even the smallest communities are medicines, books and recordings, and money loans with no interest charged. And then there is the man in London whose home is open for those who have come from abroad to raise money for yeshivas, or individuals passing through London from all over the world. He provides comfortable accommodations and kosher meals as if he were running a veritable hotel. His kindness “business” is thriving with a guest list, that over the years, has numbered in the thousands. At certain hours of the day, meals are served. The kitchen is always open and the refrigerator is always stocked with

Magazine Rosh Hashana 5775 desserts. It is told that one of the guests was sitting in the kitchen having cake and coffee. He remarked to the man sitting across the table, “I feel bad. I’ve been here three weeks and I haven’t paid anything.” The other man replied, “Don’t feel bad. I’ve been here for years already.” It was the owner himself! The business of kindness has limitless opportunities for the interested individual. Few of us feel capable of opening our homes to a steady stream of guests, but almost anyone can host a Shabbos guest. Some people have become so fond of this practice that their Shabbos table is not complete without the presence of at least one or two guests. There are many families who invite ten or twenty guests to their table on a normal Shabbos. The lack of space in their homes doesn’t stop them from expanding their business; there is always room for another plate and another chair.
THE GIFT OF A TOMATO People who operate in the world of kindness commonly feel that one of their greatest pleasures is giving and doing for others. The environment of kindness tends to change a person’s relationships with other people. The acts of kindness make a bridge that connects people in a non-competitive, synergistic atmosphere. When Moses Montefiore came to visit Jerusalem about l50 years ago, he was most impressed by the kind of people he met, not only the leaders of the community but especially the ordinary people he met in the street. One morning, he encountered a little boy on his way to cheder. He asked the boy to show him what his mother had sent in his lunch bag. The boy opened his bag and took out a piece of bread smeared with olive oil. Moses Montefiore, who was a millionaire philanthropist, took the boy’s hand and led him to a fruit and vegetable stall in the market. He bought a tomato to add to the boy’s lunch bag. The boy thanked him and started on his way to cheder. Montefiore watched the boy go a few steps and then turn in the direction of one of the beggars who sat by the side of the road. The boy took the tomato out of his bag and thrust it into the hand of the beggar. Then, with a smile on his face, he happily ran off to school. This display of generosity and selflessness on the part of a little cheder boy, along with many other similar encounters, turned Montefiore into a staunch supporter of Jerusalem’s poor and a life-long benefactor to the religious settlement. It’s hard for us to imagine what an added tomato might mean to a poor boy whose family could not afford such “luxuries.” But the little cheder boy already knew that the opportunity to do a kindness is priceless, and it clearly gave him deep satisfaction to pass on his tomato to someone who needed it more than he did.
THE PAYMENT FOR A KINDNESS There is no place for pride or feelings of superiority in the world of kindness because the giver is taking from the infinite

Zechuyos storehouse of kindness that is owned by G-d. The person doing such good knows that he is a vehicle or a messenger for the delivery of the bountiful goodness that G-d stores up for humanity. We are merely the middlemen in this process of moving goods and services. And the pleasure comes from holding that delivery in our hands. What we are giving is from G-d, and as we facilitate the process of getting it to its rightful owners, we have the pleasure of closeness with our Creator. If there is any payment for doing a kindness, it is this pleasure that we feel as we experience our proximity to G-d. Even a little boy in cheder could understand that his gift from the millionaire philanthropist was a gift far greater than Moses Montefiore had intended. Montefiore gave that little boy an opportunity to merit a closeness to G-d by giving charity to a poor man. All of the main players in this episode have now passed on to the World of Truth, but the acts of kindness they did continue to have their impact. One of the first steps we take upon entering this hidden world of kindness is to recognize that everything we have is a gift. Every movement, every breath of air, and every bite of food. We become filled with infinite gratitude to the Creator. And then we become aware of the more subtle nuances of this gift. It would have been sufficient for the world to exist in a state of black and white, but the Creator chose to give us endless pleasure in the beauty of colors and textures. Likewise, He could have given us a palatable but quite neutral tasting food that would keep us alive. Instead, he showered us with a vast array of foods from sour to sweet, juicy and dry, from soft to crisp, warm and cold, with pleasing aromas and textures that engage our senses. To mention just one, when the summer months come around, we are again surprised by the appearance of grapes that seem so perfectly designed to cool our thirst and satisfy our desire for sweetness. When we think how the Creator cares about us so much that he made grapes so delicious, it makes us realize that we are beloved. In the same way, when a person receives kindness from another, he feels beloved. His soul is not alone among all the souls.
SAVE ONE PERSON AND SAVE A WORLD When a person in need receives the gift of food, clothing, or a service, he also receives the knowledge that someone cares for him, that he is connected to the community, and that he is considered an important member. To save one person is to save a world. Sometimes the kindness is just enough to get the person back on his feet psychologically, knowing that he is not alone in his pain or his need. A person who has no money feels “impoverished” because he experiences a feeling of hopelessness when he sits back and regards his situation. In his moment of despair, a gift of money or an interest-free phone, however small has more value than the money itself. It is a gesture of encouragement and a step in the direction of a positive attitude.
24
THE ENGLISH UPDATE
Magazine Rosh Hashana 5775 That positive attitude can also very likely lead a person to take measures that can lift him out of his poverty and set him on the road to financial independence. In light of the ensuing events, the small kindness that was rendered becomes the turning point and the catalyst to set a person back on his feet. In the world of kindness, there are families whose penchant for doing such acts is passed on from one generation to the next. Even the small children in these families are busy duplicating what they’ve seen their parents doing. You can spot them in the park when you find them showing an even younger sister or brother how to throw a ball or helping someone up the slide or wiping the sand off another child’s face and giving them a drink. They have already learned to master their own need systems and they seem to be the happiest children.
DWELLING IN THE WORLD OF GIVING I once spoke with someone whose sons are all involved in serving the community and helping people in prisons and other institutions. I asked him to explain how his children came to be so compassionate and caring. The man gave a simple explanation: “I don’t know. It might be from their mother. Right now as we speak, she is helping someone make a bar mitzvah, and that is how she spends her time, day in and day out - helping people.” This man’s wife understands that “the real world” is to be found where our main thought is to make life better for others. Although only those people in her family and immediate surroundings, neighbors and friends, even know her name and the nature of her activities, she has achieved genuine greatness, maybe even greater than many of the famous names in history. Some people would have you believe that living in “the real world” is only achieved by having a certain familiarity with current events and popular culture, knowing about the political and economic trends, or possessing a degree in higher education which would certify that you are cognizant of all these “important’ subjects. Some people would have you believe that holding a position in a business or school, or working in a profession is tantamount to dwelling in “the real world.” However, I would direct your attention to this unknown woman who holds no official positions or diplomas. She probably even rarely reads a newspaper. She has the most direct grasp on “the real world” because she devotes her time to the most real, in the sense of enduring and vital, of all human occupations - acts of kindness. The path to the world of kindness begins with even the smallest interest in giving of yourself, your efforts, or your material possessions. The possibilities are endless. She Called Him “Zees” Once, I had a divine revelation. It was on the holy day of Rosh Hashanah, but I wasn't in the synagogue. I was in a hospital on that very wet morning, in a sterile and depressing geriatrics rehab ward, where a few old bubbies had gathered to hear the sounding of the shofar. Every year I do this--blow shofar in the hospitals. Every year at least one person cries. This year there was a bubbeh who didn't seem so old. She was very withit and the sight of a shofar filled her with excitement. She poured out to me memories of her childhood, it seemed the past had just come awake for her. She had grown up steeped in Chassidic warmth and soul, and even here in Vancouver it had never left her. She recited the blessing and I began to blow the shofar, softly but clearly. The tears began to come. I'm used to that already, and I just keep going. But when I finished, that's when it was obvious that G-d was there in the room. Because she was talking to Him.

"Oy, zeeseh G-tt! Tiereh, zeeseh G-tt! Mein zeeseh G-tt!" She was crying and she was holding G-d in her hands. The hands of an old bubbeh holding an infinite, timeless G-d. She called him "zees." I had never heard that before. "Zees" I had heard applied to desserts and to grandchildren. The Psalms of David and “The Song of Songs” talked about the Almighty in that way. But this was an old bubbeh. Her voice had that tone of love and compassion, yet she was filled with awe. She was crying wth sorrow, with joy, with pain, with longing...yet her words were sweet ecstasy. I can't translate those words she said. It doesn't work in English, "My dear, sweet G-d." It just doesn't happen. Because in English you don't talk to G-d the way a wife talks to her beloved husband, a husband who went away on a distant journey and you never knew if he would return, and now you're suddenly joyously
reunited. Like a mother talks to her small, sweet children and like a daughter talks to her father who she knows will never abandon her. All in one. In English there is no such thing. But in the Yiddish of her childhood she could say it. For me, her cries smashed through the most profound journeys of the philosophers, popping them like a child pops bubbles in the air, like shadows disappear in the sunshine. They had no meaning here. They are ideas. This is G-d. The real thing. This was revelation. Something the old bubbies had back there, back then. Something we had lost. Almost. I had to leave to go to the synagogue. She was still in tears. I discovered I was smiling. You'll think I'm insensitive, but I was helpless before this deep, uplifting joy that just arose from inside. She cried. I was full of joy. Why shouldn't I be? I had just seen G-d face to face. Unzer zeeseh G-tt. Reprinted with permission from Chabad.org.

From Felafel to Chanukah Gelt: Brighten Up a Child’s World
Arleen Habshush is a virtual chesed machine. She “works” with over 50 large (8-15 kids) religious families in the Shmuel HaNavi neighborhood. Several years ago, we began working together on a few projects.
1. Purim Leftover Drive is a lovely, simple neighborhood project that costs nothing but the price of photocopying some signs and a few phone calls, yet it yields a tremendous amount of food for needy families and makes everyone feel good. How? We collect all the closed food items people don’t need or want from the shalach manos they have received, such as boxes of candy, cookies, crackers, potato chips, jars of jelly, cereal, etc. Instead of mindlessly sending it along to other friends who also have tons of stuff, I sort the items and then Arleen gives it out to families who really appreciate the food (especially the candy and “junk food” which their kids rarely get). It isn’t hard to organize a Purim Leftover Drive in your neighborhood. Contact me via the Update and I’ll email you easy instructions.
2. The Falafel Fund enables large families to eat one entire meal at the local falafel take-out restaurant so the mother of the family will have one less meal to prepare the week before Pesach. Her children are thrilled because they rarely get to eat store bought falafel, and they probably never get to go out to eat in a “restaurant.” Each family member gets an entire falafel, French fries, and a drink (father and big brothers eat what the little children don’t finish). Every penny goes directly to the falafel store owner, who gives Arleen petakim to give out to the families.
3. Shavuos Cheesecake Fund. Everyone associates Shavuos with cheesecake. But for many families, a cheesecake can be a luxury, too expensive to buy or make. Therefore we started a Shavuos Cheesecake Fund.
According to how much money we raise, the makolet man on Shmuel HaNavi gives the selected families all the ingredients necessary to make a very healthy, no-bake cheesecake (including an entire kilo of sugar though only 1/2 a cup is needed, and a disposable pan so the mother has less to wash). The recipe is beautifully typed out in Hebrew on pink paper, and a pink petek is given to the families to give to the makolet man so we can recheck that everyone received their cheesecake.
4. Chanukah is a time of happy gifts for children. Unless they come from a family that can’t afford to spend money on such things. According to the amount of money we collect, a shiny new ten shekel piece is given to each child aged six and above, and a new shiny five shekel piece to children under six. The correct number of coins for individual families are put into a small sandwich bag and tied with a pretty ribbon. Arleen gives the selected mothers the bags to give out to their children, so the mothers will have the joy of being able to give their children Chanukah gelt. The children have the thrill of going into the neighborhood 5-shekel store and being able to choose what they want to buy with their own money! It’s amazing how easy it is to spread happiness through chesed in Israel. Besides the zechus of living in our Land, Israel also gives us the chance to know our tzedaka money isn’t going for carpeting, but to make individuals happy. For advice about how to set up your own chesed project or how you can help these existing projects, write to Tzvia Ehrlich-Klein at kleinhap@012.net.il.

Cooking and Consciousness
by Nesanel Yoel Safran
B
atting “cleanup may be a position of honor on the baseball field, but in the field of cooking it’s anything but. In some circles, the mark of an important chef is that he never sullies his hands with dishwater (or even food, for that matter, because the real big ones just stand back and orchestrate like a conductor, telling everyone else what to do). I am not such a cook. To me, cleaning up after my own mess is part of the job. It hasn’t always been that way. Growing up, I admit that I was something of a brat about doing dishes. In America we had an automatic dishwasher like everyone else, which made the job a non-starter. Yet even the nominal task of loading the dishwasher put me off, which I hid behind righteous indignation over what I viewed as the absurd fact that you had to practically wash the dish clean (called rinse) before you put it in. “If you’re going that far already, you might as well just do the whole thing, I’d huff. My first real taste of dishwashing came when I was a bochur; my roommate and I had hosted a meal. We both left the dirty pots and dishes in the sink,
somehow imagining they would selfclean given enough time, but we were rudely awakened by the increasingly unsavory smell that gradually overtook our apartment, until, lacking a choice, we dove in hands first (no dishwashing machine there) and were treated to a lesson in spore-borne botany for no extra charge. Things seemed to get better when my first cooking jobs always seemed to include a clean-up guy who would magically make my every mess disappear. Then it happened. In between yeshiva jobs, I started to work for a very classy recent widow. She and her husband had been renowned for their Shabbos hospitality, hosting dozens at every gourmet meal. She’d done all the cooking herself, but after the loss of her husband, she was just too broken to do it, yet wanted to keep up the mitzvah in his memory and merit. She graciously took me on, offering very generous terms, but with one condition: I had to clean up after myself. But not only after I’d cooked everything, but while I was cooking. Use a spoon, wash a spoon. Use a bowl, wash a bowl. This was a big chiddush for me and very far from my
comfort zone. But I needed the work, and she assured me that I’d soon come to see the benefits of this approach. It took getting used to, but she was right. No longer would I get lost in the maze of used utensils, nor have to hack my way like a jungle explorer to find clear counter space. At the end of my exhausting six-course marathon, when the last thing I wanted was to climb a mountain of dirty pots and dishes to wash—I didn’t have to! And the dishes washed up so much easier when the stains were fresh than after they had hardened on. The Yamim Noraim are days that we all “clean-up and focus on removing the spiritual sludge we’ve accumulated over the past year. Those who’ve been cleaning up after themselves as they’ve gone along—teshuva right after the mistakes—will find the task light, pleasant, and invigorating. The wipe of a counter, the polish of an already clean glass. If we’ve let our “dirty dishes sit, it could take a bit more scrubbing. But, either way, if we roll up our sleeves and step up to the plate, we’ll surely hit a home run (“running home to Tatty, which is what teshuva is really about, after all).

KITCHEN CLEAN-UP TIPS: TO MAKE EVEN THE CHEAPEST DISHWASHING LIQUID INTO A SUPERCHARGED GREASE CUTTER, add about 2 tablespoons per bottle of vinegar, lemon juice, or (best) 2 teaspoons of citric acid (melach limon).
INSTEAD
OF
SOAKING
MODERATELY DIRTY POTS AND PLATES, simply give them a swipe with a wet, soapy sponge and wait

a few minutes (but not until it dries). The dirt comes up as if they were soaked.
Of course, the best way to avoid having to wash dirty pots and dishes is to not get them dirty in the first place. Over the years I’ve become something of a master of one-pot cooking. Here’s a one-pot Yerushalmi Kugel that can’t be beat for keeping neat…
YERUSHALMI KUGEL IN A POT (serves 12) Frying sugar in oil is about as health-food politically incorrect as you can get, but that’s the real way to do it. Ingredients: • ½ liter oil (soy, canola, etc.) • 1 k (2.2 lb.) white sugar • 2½ liters water • 3½ liters thin, flat (think match sticks) noodles • 15 eggs • 1 Tbsp salt • 1 tsp black pepper
Preparation: • Bring water to boil in separate pot (it doesn’t officially count as a second pot since it’s only water and you don’t have to clean it) or coffee urn. Meanwhile, place half the sugar (½ kg) and all the oil in a pot big enough to hold all the ingredients of this recipe. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar all melts, caramelizes (turns brown), and then turns a brownish black. (At this point it may begin to smell like tar, but don’t worry.) • Carefully pour in the boiling water, lower flame, and let the mixture gently boil for five minutes. Add noodles and let boil until essentially all the water has been absorbed. Turn off flame and let sit uncovered for 15-30 minutes. • Meanwhile, combine all remaining ingredients (eggs—opened and checked, obviously, ½ kg sugar, salt, and pepper), in a bowl or pitcher and whisk or stickblend until thoroughly mixed. Pour mixture into noodle pot, stirring well. It should soon take on a creamy, brown consistency, as the eggs slightly cook from the hot noodles. • At this point you can taste if you choose, adding more salt, pepper, etc., according to taste. Scoop out the mixture into one or more greased or bakingpapered baking pans and bake at 200° C, for about 45 minutes. (Tip: to keep crust from burning/over hardening, pour a half cup of water over the top, halfway through.) • Ideally, I’d like to skip this last, baking pan step and just bake it in the pot it cooked in—making it really one pot—but I can’t figure out how I’d unmold it afterwards to cross cut it. Maybe a Teflon coated pot, but I’m not sure it would handle the super hot frying sugar. Does anyone have some ideas?

Bring in the new year with Chad Peamit
IIt’s’ that h time i off year again i when h even those h off you who h hardly make challah will usually try to do so in honor of Rosh Hashanah. To help you along in your challah baking endeavors, I’d like to share with you a common “FAQ” I receive both when I give challah demonstrations and also via my website. In fact, it’s so basic that I feel you must read this before attempting to create your dough.
Question: I attended one of your challah demonstrations, which I thought was very good. It really inspired me to make challah in a bigger batch so that I can do the mitzvah. I used your recipe that you gave out on a printed card and followed it meticulously, but the dough didn't rise. Have you got any suggestions for me? My regular challah recipe which is smaller always works out fine. Many thanks for your inspiring words and fascinating demonstration!
Answer:
quality plastic container with a tight lid. Then, immediately after using it, put it into your freezer, NOT your refrigerator or your cabinet. Every single time you use it after this point, remove it only when you need to use it, measure off your tablespoon or two that you are using and then, again, immediately after using it, replace it in your freezer. This will protect the yeast’s potency for as long as you have it in your freezer, and your challahs should once again rise beautifully, now and always. This answer I have written here is especially important for those who tell me that for their recipe of just 2.25 kilos (17 cups) of flour they are using at least 4 (That’s FAR too much.) tablespoons of yeast. Heavens, have rachmanus on your kishkes! If you need to use so much yeast in order for your challahs to rise, it’s a sign that the yeast is not working anymore. Throw it out and get a new package, and then follow the directions I’ve just listed for how to keep it in storage for future use.
Have a wonderful time baking your challahs!

Thank you for your query and for your feedback! If you saw my demonstration then you know that, baruch Hashem, the fact that your dough did not rise would have nothing to do with the recipe I showed, since the dough I used at that demo most certainly did rise. So let’s analyze what could have happened. Before anything else –are you sure you put the yeast into your dough when you were creating it? Don’t laugh – I’ve actually made that mistake before. Okay, now that we’ve made sure you did, check these steps: First of all, what kind of yeast did you use, fresh that you bought in the refrigerator section of your store, or dry that came in a closed packet? Secondly, how old is your yeast? If you bought it fresh, is it past the date printed on the package? If it was dry yeast, when did you open it? In my experience, this is usually the problem. If it was one of those large vacuum packed containers of yeast and you opened it a bit ago, even as recently as just a week – when you first used it, it probably worked really amazingly, correct? But then, and here is the important point – where did you store it once it was opened? I know the packet says you can store it in the cabinet or the refrigerator BUT if you do so, it will lose its original potency very quickly. Try what I say and see for yourself. Once you have opened the package, empty it into a good

After months of planning and much investment, Zusia’s Yom Tov menu has been published and many families who will be spending the Tishrei season in Yerushalayim have already ordered their gourmet Yom Tov meals to enhance the flavor of their holiday. Zusia’s host and founder is Zusia Cohen, a former New Yorker with a strong background in the food preparation and catering business, knows how to make every meal feel like a private simcha. He is totally hands-on and involved in every aspect of the business from the purchase of the all new state of the art kitchen equipment to making sure that every order that leaves the premises will provide the customer with full satisfaction. Zusia also makes sure that all raw ingredients are fresh and top quality. Chef Guy Frenkel, who has won international awards for his haute cuisine, will be preparing the Yom Tov food to the delight of every palette. Guy has earned diplomas both as an executive chef and a master patissier. Every dish on the tastefully varied menu will benefit from Guy’s expertise with over 20
years of experience in the kitchen. Zusia’s is taking orders for all Yom Tov meals beginning Friday, October 3rd, erev Yom Kippur through Shabbos Bereishis. Zusia’s four course meals include everything you need for Yom Tov from grape juice and challah to a surprise house dessert every day. Full waiter service is also available when ordering Zusia’s VIP menu. Delivery service to your apartment or hotel is included in both menu packages. The base for this major Yom Tov culinary happening is located near the Bucharim shuk off Yechezkel Street on the premises of the soon to be reopened boutique eatery – Zusia’s Karczma. This unique establishment will provide great food, drinks and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else. The reopening date is scheduled for after Sukkos and is definitely something to look forward to. Meanwhile, don’t wait until it’s too late to book your Yom Tov meals. You can request a menu and order from Zusia’s at 052 767-0656, shelys93@gmail.com or by fax at 02 561-1235.
