day before the soldiers entered Gaza, I received an email from a mailing list to daven for the son of one of the members of the list. This young man’s father is our good friend from way back when we all lived in the same community in the States. We all know someone who is fighting in Gaza or someone who has a son or nephew fighting there. Our prayers are with all of them as we wonder: “Where do they sleep, and do they even have a chance to sleep?” “Do they have enough to eat?” “Where were they on Shabbos while we made Kiddush and sat down to our seudahs with our families and friends?” “How do their parents feel as they try to go about their daily business?” We stand with them, even while many media outlets and most of the world, including the self-hating Jews, are pontificating about “disproportionate response,” “genocide,” and “the slaughter of innocent women and children.” They ask: “Why are there so few casualties among the Jews and so many among those living in Gaza?” They should be asking: “Why do the Israelis build bomb shelters and defense systems while Hamas uses women and children as human shields and takes their cement to build tunnels for terrorists instead of shelters for the civilians?” They should be asking: “Why do Hamas and the Muslims in general have a death cult which motivates them to commit self-genocide?” It seems that the world of sheker has never had such a heyday as its twisted truths, outright lies, and distortions proliferate among the nations whose anti-Semitism causes them to defend our enemies, even when those enemies have vowed to annihilate them as well. For the Jews here in Eretz Yisrael and around the world, it is a time of prayer and gratitude for the open miracles we have witnessed, amidst the pain for the loss of precious lives. As long as we stand together with Hashem and His truth, we can stand alone defending ourselves with His help. May He continue to protect and sustain each and every soldier, as well as all of the Jewish People, and bring us very soon, in our days, to the Geulah Shalaymah.

After the rocket is intercepted or falls harmlessly in an open area, we should express our thanks to G-d for His kindnesses.

I live in Givat Zeev and am eagerly waiting for THE ENGLISH UPDATE to get here. There is a plethora

of English speakers here who would love to have something to read and advertise in each week. Every week I have to scrounge for your magazine in trash bins in peoples’ buildings in Yerushalayim (not such a pleasant ordeal). Please hurry up in reaching us! -A Reader, Givat Zeev In the “Dear Readers” last week , you mentioned

that Rabbi Zilberstein and members of the Beit David Kollel in Holon have compiled a list of mitzvahs to fulfill when the sirens go off. Can you publish the complete list of the mitzvahs they recommend that we do? -A Reader

THE ENGLISH UPDATE responds:

Here is their list with thanks to Arutz Sheva, Israel National News for publicizing them: 1. At the blast of the siren, we should imbue our hearts with complete trust in G-d, the knowledge that He directs all events, and the certainty that every bullet and rocket has a Divinely-designated address. The Rambam, whose listing of the 613 Torah commandments is the most authoritative, does not list this mitzvah specifically, though it is certainly connected to the commandments to know that G-d exists, to love Him, and to fear Him. 2. We should pray, by reciting a chapter of Psalms or other

prayer, that the oncoming rocket not harm any Jew, and that it be successfully intercepted if necessary. The Torah commands us to pray for salvation when we face trouble and tribulation. 3. We must also engage in thoughts of repentance. The Rambam writes: "It is a positive Torah commandment to cry out and sound trumpets for every tribulation that faces the community; this is one of the ways to engage in teshuvah, repentance... in the knowledge that the troubles stem from [our] evil deeds…" 4. After the rocket is intercepted or falls harmlessly in an open area, we should express our thanks to G-d for His kindnesses. The Baal HaShe'iltot wrote that thanking G-d for a miracle is a positive Torah commandment. 5. When we are safe in our homes during a missile alert, we must remember those who are in the street frantically searching for a safe area. We should open our doors for them, thus fulfilling two mitzvahs in one: hospitality and saving others from danger. Regarding the commandment to give thanks, Rabbi Zilberstein added the following "bonus" concept: A verse in Psalms 35:18 praising public thanksgiving is this – "I will thank You in a great congregation, amidst a large nation I will praise You." The gematria of the Hebrew letters of the verse add up to 774 which is precisely the current Jewish calendar year of this, the Sixth Millennium. -S.D.

I am not writing in an official capacity but simply as a grateful alumna of NEVE YERUSHALAYIM. Rabbi Refson recently sent out a letter describing the plight of Neve Yerushalayim, a school that has helped thousands of girls - many present and future mothers of Klal Yisrael. Because of the dollar's depreciation and the Israeli budget cuts, they have a debt of 2.8 million dollars and may have to close. This would be a tragedy. If there is any way you can help by donating a large amount, donating a small amount regularly or in any other financial matter please visit - https://nevey.org/donation-form/ - all contact information possibly is there. If you know anyone who may be interested in donating to Neve please give them this information. -Someone whose life was saved because of Neve, and I'm just one of many!

VERRIN AH BRAND

I

Rabbi Issamar Ginzberg Monetized Intellect Consulting The Ba’al Eitza and Acclaimed Marketing Expert 718 971-5220 issamar@issamar.com www.issamar.com

That was easy!

was invited to come to New York last week for the “Let’s Talk Business 2014” summit. And of course, among the many other questions that were thrown at me, was this one, which I hear all too often: “Ich vill verrin ah brand.” “I want to become a brand. I’m competing with NYU in Manhattan for a segment of business, and they are what people think of as the first and foremost, if not only choice they have. Can you help me become a brand?” (Freud would say that this question indicates a lack of confidence just like a child who needs to prove himself later in life as “I’m a somebody.” But that’s a different schmooze all together.) I want to devote the rest of this week’s column to my answer to that question. “Look, you can’t compete with NYU for medical services and hope to develop your brand to be on par with theirs, not unless you have tens of millions of dollars to experiment with. No one is going to come to you because you’ve out-branded NYU with some kind of better looking logo or jingle. “But here is what you can do. Have longer hours. Offer no appointment needed service. Be open days they are closed. Give results faster. Get direct referrals from doctors by working on having them recommend or suggest your company as an alternative to NYU. Farm your area, so that while you are not competing with NYU’s image and millions of dollars of marketing budget as a whole, you are known within this small yet lucrative market segment as a top class provider.

“Advertise directly to the potential clients with strategic ads, media mentions, and other forms of placement-- and referral to make sure that you are a place people want to visit for some personal reason, whether it be faster response, valet parking, or free cake and coffee.” Rabbosai! You’ve read often enough in this column how the path to success and growth in business consists of siyata d’shmaya and the proper hishtadlus; the proper hishtadlus, as far as I can tell from the thousands of businesses I’ve worked with and assisted, does not consist of spending money to brand yourself. Is that a good side benefit to ads that work properly? Of course. But spending tons of money with the hope that it will help people remember you is a very risky strategy that, for the most part, does not pay off with success. Yes, there are examples of companies that have broken this rule, but every old newspaper has memories of so many others that tried and failed. One recent success story of branding in this respect is Pomegranate, that large luxury kosher supermarket on Coney Island Avenue in Flatbush. However, none of us really know how much money it took in advertising and if it was ultimately worth it. Could they have gotten the same results with less marketing that was more narrowly focused? Now several competitors have sprung up, and they are leveraging the concept to piggyback along for the ride after Pomegranate spent all that money promoting. They need to spend a small fraction of what Pomegranate spent to achieve the “we’re just continued on page 22

Resilient ChildrenResilient Parents Dr. Ludman’s sound advice is especially helpful for parents during this tense time of sirens going off and rocket attacks. In general, this approach to life’s challenges can transform them into tremendous learning opportunities.

H

ow do we raise resilient children? Resilience, the ability to roll with the punches, to experience life's challenges, and not just bounce back but thrive, is critical for all of us, individually and collectively as a community. This is especially so for children living here, and in these times, worldwide. Resilience is in large part learned, and as parents, we serve as valuable role models for our children. While a parent may very much want to, they can't shelter their child from all of life's challenges. They can, however, give their children the tools needed to help face these challenges, turn challenges into opportunities for growth and learning, and help support them as they mature. How parents cope with daily life and its many stresses, both good and bad, greatly influences how our children see and manage their world. We may not have much control over the many challenges that come our way but we certainly can exercise some control in how we choose to see and ultimately deal with them. A positive attitude can be learned and can even enable us to discover strengths that we didn't know we had. The more resilient we are, the happier, healthier, and more successful we can be as individuals and in our interpersonal relationships. Resilient people are more

satisfied, live longer, and lead more productive lives. With this in mind, here are a few thoughts about helping to build resilience in your child. Children need to feel your love and security in order to explore their world and feel safe. From an early age, they need to know that you'll meet their needs, that you honestly care about them, and that you'll comfort and support them with unconditional love and affection. Children need to know that you are there for them and fully present. This means reducing and eliminating outside distractions. Stop whatever you are doing, put away your "I- stuff " and look your child happily in the "eye." Studies suggest that good eye contact is an essential aspect of developing social skills in children of all ages, yet how often do we see a parent with their face buried in their devices? Quality and quantity time are essential in building a strong relationship between you and your child. Listen to and believe in your child. Help your child identify and express his emotions. Find out what he actually thinks and feels and validate his feelings. Your empathic attunement to his needs teaches him how to better understand others and increases resilience. Children need to feel heard, understood, and accepted for who they are. Mutual trust is crucial to your relationship.

Encourage an atmosphere of open communication and honesty where conflict can be expressed and there's a safe forum for discussion and resolution of issues. Through taking responsibility for your own behavior, and acknowledging your own mistakes, you can help your child become more assertive and learn that limit-setting and consistency are important. Criticism done with love and discipline (not punishment) can teach a child that their behavior has consequences. Laugh and have fun with your child. Help your child learn to express his feelings, see humor in the moment, and more fully appreciate the small things in life. Watch a toddler spend an inordinate amount of time just looking at a leaf or a flower, and you too can be amazed by the beauty all around us that we often miss. Teach your children to show gratitude and appreciation for what they have. Find ways to make family time enjoyable, relaxing and meaningful. Eat, pray, play, exercise and sing together. Read aloud, tell stories and share family photos. Family meals, from preparation to clean up, offer the opportunity to check in with each other. Teach your children how to slow down, develop self-calming strategies, and reduce stress through breathing and relaxation. Children need time to play. Reduce over-scheduling and increase independent creative play and reading, and see the difference it makes on them and on you.

Help your child focus on her strengths and abilities. Empower her by showing that you have trust and confidence in her decisions, and praise both trying, as well as succeeding, with tasks. Encourage patience and understanding and help her let go of the drive for perfection, and instead see mistakes as part of learning. Work on being the best person you can be and encourage this for your children. Show your children how their behavior affects others. Create family opportunities which encourage sharing, volunteering, and kindness to others. Teach them about modern day heroes. Model a healthy lifestyle. Eat well, keep fit, and promote healthy sleep. Provide routine, structure, and consistency while being open to new ideas; be flexible and positive. Be hopeful and optimistic and be a friend to others who are going through a difficult time. Teach your child to see the good in any situation and to move forward in spite of challenges. Through strength and resilience, we can all take a difficult situation and not just weather the storm but help drive the boat.

How We Can Help

Both organizations and individuals all over Eretz Yisrael are pitching in to help the soldiers in Gaza and the beleaguered communities in the South. From sending 3,000 changes of underwear to the boys in Operation Protective Edge to buying pizzas and providing babysitting for families in the South and families of the soldiers, there has been an overwhelming outpouring of support. Last Thursday alone, 1,500 pizzas were delivered to a whole base of more than 3,500 soldiers. Donors from all over the world made contributions to cover the costs. Soldiers who were operating the Iron Dome in the middle of a farm in Ashkelon also got a few slices. Another example of the ways people are trying to help comes from one of our Jerusalem neighborhoods. An email was sent out on the Ramat Eshkol N’shei list asking if any of the kollel wives would be interested in baking cakes and cookies for the IDF soldiers on the front lines. The woman who sent out the email had a neighbor who had been called up to the reserves. He had volunteered to take down a box of treats with him to Gaza. By the end of the same night the email was sent out,

over 200 families had responded with bags stuffed with over 1,000 care packages and letters. To donate to these services for the soldiers which help to boost their morale: Pizza - www.dkatom.co.il/pizza Underwear Packages - www.dkatom.co.il/under

Last Friday, an urgent atzeres tefillah was held in Yeshivas Mir, Yerushalayim. The Rosh Yeshiva, Hagaon Harav Eliezer Yehuda Finkel, shlita, spoke about the need to be strengthened in tefillah and Torah learning at this time. After his talk, the Mir students who had filled the beis medrash to overflowing poured out their hearts in tefillah for the success and safety of the soldiers and for all those who are endangered in Eretz Yisrael. Another development on the “Tefillah Battleground” is the Shmira Project. More than 10,000 people have signed up for this grassroots program that pairs IDF combat soldiers with Jews around the world who do acts of kindness, prayer or Torah learning to increase the soldier’s spiritual merit and protection. Any mitzvah

that participants do on behalf of “their” soldier makes a difference to the soldier and to Jewish unity. Participants are encouraged to pick a mitzvah that can easily be a part of their life and dedicate it to “their” soldier. Here are some of the guidelines: “Write your soldier’s name out and post it where you’ll see it: near the Shabbat candles, on the refrigerator, in your car, or in your phone. Then, when you’re going to do something positive in the world – stop and think of ‘your’ soldier and include him in your mitzvah.” The project was organized by the mother of a former combat soldier. To sign up and receive the name of a soldier for davening, you can fax to 02 657-2433, or visit the sign-up page at www.shmiraproject.com.

The Greatest Show of Support—Making Aliyah Despite the tense security situation, 228 new olim from the United States and Canada arrived at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport on Tuesday, July 22, on a Nefesh B’Nefesh Aliyah charter flight. Of these olim, a remarkable 100 are children who made aliyah with their parents. Altogether, 29 families and 54 singles joined this landmark flight. Due to the complicated security situation in Israel, Nefesh B’Nefesh is reaching out to the olim to give them counseling and support. They received a special booklet by the Ministry of Aliyah and Immigrant Absorption on security measures, such as what to do when a Code Red siren sounds warning of incoming rockets. The Olim were

also provided with an English-language manual from the Home Front Command on how to talk to your children about the situation, translated by Nefesh B’Nefesh. “Cancelling or postponing our trip was never an option. Even though we’re flying into a war zone, we’re just as excited as we always were,” said Sarah Bergman, 31, of Waterbury, Connecticut, who will be making aliyah to Even Shmuel with her husband, Fred, 34, and children Eliyahu, 10, Zev, 8, Azriel, 6, and Elisheva, 2. Mrs. Bergman added, “We are preparing our children by talking about the situation. Our family is concerned, but this is where we’re going.”

Take Care

Recent tragic events have highlighted some of the risks that hitchhikers take. The kidnapping that cost three precious teenage yeshiva boys their lives was not an isolated effort, and not the first one to end in heartbreak, although most of the dozens of earlier such attempts were, thankfully, unsuccessful. It is known that terrorists frequently pretend to be Chareidi or National Religious Jews. They don dark trousers, white shirts, and black kippot and play recordings of Chassidic music, or wear large knitted kippot and set the car radios to a Hebrew-language station. The noise made by the recordings or the radio makes it harder for potential passengers to notice their Arab accents, and Anglos may find it even more difficult than Israelis to detect. Anyone who insists on thumbing lifts should take the precaution of making sure that the people in the car are to be trusted. It is very suspicious when a kippah-wearer cannot complete the verses “Shema Yisrael…” and “Ashrei Yoshvei Beisecha ..,” for example. Even if they pass that test, someone seeking a lift must realize that some terrorists have become wise to these questions. A lift-seeker should then ask more complex queries, including some ridiculous ones. “Why do we read Koheles on Shavuos?” Or, “What special food is eaten on Kol Nidrei night?” Or, “Why do they observe an extra night of Chanukah in the Diaspora?” Or, “How many candles do we light on the third night of Purim?” The list of questions that even the most ignorant religious Jew would be able to answer correctly is endless, and making up such a list could even turn into a fun activity with an important purpose. By the way, Jewish drivers are accustomed to being asked such questions and do not take offense. Not every Arab driver is a potential murderer, it is true, but every Arab driver who pretends to be a Jew is to be strictly avoided. My experience with Diaspora youngsters is that there are other potential dangers of which many are unaware.

For example, it’s important not to plunge headfirst into unknown waters. There is an innocent-looking pool in the Golan Heights, that conceals a hard rock not far beneath the surface. Even a good swimmer should not swim in natural waters unless there is a lifeguard. Chas v’shalom, there are strong undertows that can carry a person out to sea. This can happen, not only in the Mediterranean, but also in the apparently calm Dead Sea or the Kinneret, which have whirlpools. Unfortunately some Israeli rivers are dangerously polluted and this can also be fatal for swimmers. We also need to mention the ever-present danger of heatstroke in the summer. The IDF has finally learned – after bitter experience which cost healthy, young lives – that outdoor exercises which require physical exertion should be called off when there is a heat wave. Winter has its own risks. People got stuck in the snow for hours during the snowstorm that hit the country last Teves. The country’s hilly terrain means that there is a danger of flash floods during the rainy season. These have sometimes proved fatal. Youngsters from overseas should consult Israelis regarding how to behave when it comes to weather and terrain, and not decide for themselves. Locals are more likely to be aware of the dangers. Nearly everyone has a mobile phone nowadays. Youngsters should contact an agreed-upon friend or relative at least once each 24 hours during bein hazmanim. Bochrim like to hire cars and go on outings. If they leave their vehicles and go off on a hike, they should leave a note in the car window saying when they expect to be back. That way, if they are seriously delayed, someone will, hopefully, call the police. V’nishmartem me’od l’nafshosechem is one of the 613 mitzvahs, and it is at least as important as observing Shabbos and kashrus. May each and every member of Klal Yisrael be safe and secure this summer and always.

The Mystical City of Tzfas

‫ב"סד‬

By Rivkah Jacobs, author of Pieces of the Puzzle, CEO of Artzeinu Tours

Tzfat-majesty, mysticism, and simplicity all blend together in this ancient city so full of kedushah. One of the four special holy cities in the Land of Israel, Tzfat comes into the forefront in Jewish history at the end of the Spanish Inquisition. Many of the Spanish Jews expelled were great Talmedei Chachamim, steeped in the study of Kaballah. They, joining with others, came to the beautiful mountains of the upper Galil to help develop this special town perched high above sea level. Tsfat affords a magnificent view of the entire countryside and due to the altitude, enjoys fresh, pure air with cool, pleasant summers and snow white crisp winters. Tsfat depicts a quiet, serene majestic setting which afforded a prime atmosphere for the early mystics to delve into their studies. There is another reason, however, for their pull precisely to Tzfat. This little town is within eyesight ( hence the name- Tsfat from Litzpot – to gaze) and only a couple hours walking distance from Meron, the burial site of the tzaddik, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. According to tradition, Rabbi Shimon authored the book of Zohar (the book of spiritual splendor), the base work and forerunner to Mysticism. The Talmedei Chachamim of the fourteen and fifteen hundreds wanted to be near Rabbi Shimon’s kever. He was their spiritual mentor. People like to daven by the numerous kevarim in Tsfat and many men opt for a cold but very ruchnius dip in the Ari Zal's mikveh. One can still see the very alleyways and narrow streets through which these spiritual giants of the past actually strolled. The synagogues, the old homes, and the stone winding lanes of the past, coupled with the present day pleasant Tzfat community, the buzzing artist colony and the small craftsman shops make a visit to Tzfat an extremely interesting, educational and inspiring experience. Please look for Touring in Israel in the Travel Series of The English Update Offering exciting, adventurous and educational tours to Tzfat and the Galil, as well as tours throughout the country and discounted hotel reservations. like Pomegranate, only difference is that we’re in Boro Park.” The reason many people are willing to advertise and spend money doing so as opposed to spending the cost of one or two ads sitting with someone like me is because ads have a physical manifestation, a trophy of sorts that they can kinesthetically feel in the hard copy. And if the ad does not bring the results they expected, at least they know the ad appeared. You’d be surprised how many people run to buy the paper to see their ad and then cluck their approval at their great ad without even considering how well or how poorly the ad did. They got their”thrill” already from seeing themselves in print. On the other hand, spending money on something intangible like good business advice is much harder. This is especially true when people don’t write meeting notes. It’s a case of the psychological resistance to spending money on what they think is “goornisht.” Here’s a business tip: Always give at least a token “manifestable,” physical, tangible item to your clients, in addition to the real service you are providing. Even if it’s simply a summary list of action steps to take, or a high quality pen with your logo (high quality so your brand isn’t associated with junk), the human brain accepts that “thing” as proof that there was true value delivered for money received. It’s a strategy for bypassing one of the main psychological blocks that people have when it comes

BARKAN WHITE WINES – THE PERFECT SUMMER SELECTONS One of the most important factors in wine producing is choosing the just the right area for growing each type of grape. This led to Barkan’s Special Reserve Collection which includes Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay Special Reserve, both white wines. The Chain of Generations Center When we are privileged to see a new Jewish couple set up a home, we are witnessing an open miracle. The survival of the Jewish people is above the laws of nature. The eternity of the Am Hashem has no natural explanation. Our continued existence and endurance is due solely to the protection of the Al- mghty.

The Kosel HaMaaravi is also a phenomenon that defies all the standard rules of the natural world. But Hashem promised that this wall would remain standing, and it has, despite all the odds against its survival. No exhibit is needed to observe the eternity of the Jewish People; the best way to see it is by observing us follow the Torah, despite all we have endured throughout our many exiles. Nevertheless, many need an art exhibit to attract them to this truth. Close to the eternal Kosel is located an exhibit called “The Chain of Generations Center” that portrays the eternality of our nation. The exhibition, which uses the medium of glass, is set up in the subterranean chambers of a Crusader castle adjacent to the western walls. Here, 3,823 years of history is represented in 150 tons of glass, showing the chain of the generations of the Jewish people, stretching from Avraham Avinu, who was born in 1948 (from Creation), until today. Why the artist Jeremy Langford used glass to represent the about 19 generations of Jews through the millennium is up for conjecture. Maybe it’s because glass is made out of sand, and Hashem promised Avraham Avinu that his children would be as numerous as the grains of sand by the sea. Bilaam also asked, “Who can count the dust of Yaakov?” So, we see that sand represents Am Israel. But it’s deeper than that. Glass is made by putting sand into an extremely hot

Out & About furnace. The heated furnace of all that our nation has endured throughout the ages has created who we are today. The enchanting and unusual fusion of many creative elements — music, sculpture, archaeology, smoke, and light effects — creates a masterpiece that delights all the senses. Instead of remaining a spectator, the visitor becomes an active participant who can delve deeply into the history of our eternal people. There are several rooms at the center, each depicting a different period in the chain of generations of the Jewish people, beginning with the Avos and the Shevatim. Impressive works of art are seen in each room, created from layers of glass illuminated by rays of light that shine forth through the darkened rooms. During the construction of the center, fascinating archaeological finds were discovered and integrated into the exhibit. The “Room of Yearning” is a unique example of the combination of works of art and archaeological finds. At the foundation of the room is a wall from the period of the First Beis HaMikdash. The walls of the room itself are Crusader walls and there is a Mamluk ceiling. Through the glass floor that was added, you can see a mikveh from the times of the Second Beis HaMikdash. A huge column “sprouts” from the floor, rising to a height of nine meters (approximately 29 feet) and containing 2,000 pieces of glass. The creation of this work of art required about 15 tons of glass! The light-backed Hebrew letters from Divrei Hayamim and other sources that are on display appear as if filled with blazing fire. Truly, the experience of “The Chain of Generations Center” is a moving one. Reservations to visit The Chain of Generations Center can be made by telephone (02) 627-1333 or *5958. Entrance fee: NIS 25 for adults and NIS 15 for children.

The Jewish Army The Israeli army fights not out of hate for the enemy, but out of love for the Jewish nation. The last words of Israel’s first fallen soldier in the current Gaza war reveal a lot. Sgt. Eitan Barak, 20, had a WhatsApp interchange with a buddy on Thursday night just minutes before he handed in his cellphone and marched into the TERRORISTS’ NEST OF GAZA

Friend Be successful, my brother!

Friend Love you!

11:21

11:26

Barak Yalla, my brother, in two minutes, I’ll be without my phone.

11:26

Barak Hope we’ll return safely and stick it to them. 11:26

Friend You’re the best. Again, be successful.

THE ENGLISH UPDATE

11:27

A human being can never be simultaneously filled with hatred and filled with love. As Eitan Barak was about to enter the combat zone in which, four hours later, he would be killed, the young soldier was filled with love. It’s reminiscent of Sgt. Dvir Emmanueloff, the first of the fallen in Israel’s first war with the Hamas terrorists in Gaza. Dvir’s father had died of cancer two and a half years previously. With three sisters, Dvir was the only son, and he worried about the anguish he would cause his mother if he too died in battle. He even went to talk to the widowed mother of a friend of his, trying to weigh his love for his mother against his passion to defend the beleaguered Jews of Israel’s South, constantly under a barrage of rockets fired from Gaza. Dvir had attended yeshiva high school in Netivot, in the South, and he loved the local populace who was constantly under attack. When the war started, Dvir was in an officers’ training course and thus exempt from fighting. On Friday afternoon just before Israeli ground forces entered Gaza, Dvir phoned his mother and told her that he had opted to leave the course in order to join his infantry unit, massed on the border waiting for orders to attack. "Mom,” he told her, “I have to fight. I have to be there." Propelled by love, Dvir entered Gaza, where he was killed in combat several hours later. Throughout military history, armies have been whipped up with hatred for the enemy in order to get them to face the frenzy and possible fatality of battle. The IDF espouses a different mentality. Despite ten wars against various Arab armies and militias, in its training the IDF never uses the word, “Arab.” Rather, the enemy is called, “the terrorists.” Rather than identify the enemies to our north as “the Syrians” or “the Lebanese,” IDF training uses impersonal geographical descriptions: “at the Syrian border,” or “at the Lebanese border.” Contrast our approach with the Palestinians’. All the demonstrations against Israel’s defensive war—in France, England, Germany, and America—are filled with violence and vitriol. Official Palestinian education, not just in Hamascontrolled Gaza, but also in the supposedly more moderate Palestinian Authority, inculcates hatred for Jews in its Sesame Street TV series, its youth groups, and its military training camps.

The Commander’s Letter Eighteen thousand Israeli soldiers amassed on the border of Gaza last week, waiting for the order to go in and clean out the thousands of smuggling and infiltration tunnels and launching pads of the Hamas terrorists. The Commander of Givati, one of the largest infantry divisions, sent this letter to his soldiers ( roughly translated from the Hebrew ):

Dear Officers and Fighters, It’s a big honor that fell to our portion to be and to serve in the unit of Givati at this time. History chose us to be at the tip of the spear of fighting the terrorist Gaza enemy that provoked and taunted the G-d of Israel’s battalions. [Here he uses terminology from the Biblical account of David fighting Goliath.]

We prepared and trained ourselves for this moment. And we accept upon ourselves the mission, as emissaries and from a place of total humility. We are willing to endanger ourselves and give up our lives for the sake of protecting our families and our nation and our heritage. I’m counting on you, on each and every one of you, that you will act in this spirit, the spirit of Israeli warriors, who are going in the forefront of the fighting forces, … I raise my eyes to the heavens and call out with you, “Shema Yisrael, Hashem Elokenu, Hashem Echad.” Hashem, the G-d of Israel, please make our way successful, that we are going and standing to fight for Your nation of Israel against an enemy that taunts Your name. In the name of the IDF fighters and particularly the fighters of this division and its commanders, it should be that what it says in the Torah should be fulfilled by us: “Because G-d your Lord Who is going with you to fight for you against your enemies, to redeem you.” And let us say, “Amen.” “Together, and only together, we will win.” Signing off,

Ofer Winter

Uniting Under Fire The love and support of Jews and non-Jews throughout the world is manifesting in a dozen initiatives to support our soldiers. One of them is “Or L’Hayil,” a Chabad organization that helps soldiers throughout the year. It started when its founder Mendy Ofik and his brother Shmuel were on their way to Hebron five years ago to distribute Purim treats to the soldiers stationed there. An Arab ambush attacked their car with automatic rifle fire. A bullet went into Shmuel’s neck, came out the other side, and hit Mendy. As an ambulance rushed them to the hospital, Mendy vowed that if he survived, he would devote his life to Israel’s soldiers. Both Mendy and Shmuel are tireless and fearless workers in the service of Israel’s conscripts. When the order was issued Thursday night to invade Gaza, Mendy was standing there at the gate cut out of the border fence. He led the troops in reciting Shema Yisrael as they passed, brigade by brigade, into the darkness of Gaza. He and Shmuel also distributed tzitzis to any soldier who wanted them. Although the thin, cotton garments with fringes on each of its four corners certainly don’t resemble protective armor, many soldiers request them in order to be protected by the mitzvah.

Another organization to benefit the soldiers is “Project Shmira [Protection].” Project Shmira, endorsed by leading rabbis, pairs volunteers from all over the world with Israeli combat soldiers going into Gaza. Each volunteer receives the first name and mother’s name of a soldier, which is the way Jews pray for individuals. In the first hours of the Gaza invasion, Project Shmira was receiving one thousand requests per hour, from places as far flung as Uganda, Iceland, and the Far East. Yaakov G., founder of Project Shmira, was collecting soldiers’ names at the Gaza border on Friday. Amidst periodic mortar fire from Hamas, Yaakov handed around clipboards for soldiers to fill in their names. Such volunteering requires enough love to vanquish fear. Israel’s first civilian fatality was Dror Chanin, a volunteer who had come to the border last week to distribute food packages to soldiers, and was killed by a mortar shell.

Yaakov also led many soldiers in saying Shema. This credo of the Jewish faith is supposed to be said daily, every morning and night, and a custom dating back to Rabbi Akiva, 2,000 years ago, has Jews also saying Shema at the time of death. The young soldiers reciting Shema on their way into Gaza have no way of knowing if it’s the daily Shema or the deathtime Shema. One soldier handed Yaakov G. a small black notebook and requested, “If I don’t come out, please give this notebook to my family in Jerusalem.” Love propels our soldiers into Gaza, where hatred lies in wait. Earthworm Hard at work 24/7, the earthworm is one of mankind’s best friends making it possible for human and plant life to exist. Without the earthworm we would have little to eat, our world would be flooded by snow and rain, and environmental pollution would be greater than it is today.

Untiring Earth Mover

The earthworm is a natural tiller and a prodigious earth mover. It makes its way through the soil and churns the earth, loosening the subsoil and creating microscopic tunnels that allow water and oxygen to reach the root systems of plant life. As they burrow, the earthworm mixes and sifts the soil, breaking up clods of dirt and burying stones. The earthworm uses the tunnels it constructs to bring healthy organic matter deep into the ground and healthy

minerals to the surface where they are most needed. These tunnels also help in water absorption. With earthworms the ground can absorb rain and snow four to ten times faster than areas without these passage ways. This reduces flooding, restores groundwater, and helps to retain moisture for dry seasons. In the course of the earthworm’s movements, it eats close to one hundred percent of its body weight in decaying organic matter and soil on a daily basis. Passing through the length of the earthworm’s body, chemical reactions

convert this matter into a super nutritious dark earthy substance full of nutrients and soil-enriching compounds known as “castings. They are chock full of phosphorous, potash, magnesium, and calcium. Earthworm castings are no less than five times more beneficial than the finest top soil found anywhere in the world. They contain microorganisms that fight harmful bacteria, pests, and disease in the soil. Plants and trees, grown in an environment with large numbers of earthworms tilling the soil, produce healthier,

tastier, and more bountiful harvests of food. More can be grown in a smaller space. Land considered unsuitable for growth can be converted into productive soil. The time required for the produce and fruit to ripen is shortened. The need for harmful chemical fertilizers and pesticides is dramatically diminished. Less water is needed for the growing food.

The Earthworm’s Life Cycle

From the moment it is hatched, the earthworm begins its lifelong task of turning organic matter into castings.

If every Jew in Eretz Yisrael fed one kilo of food wastes to earthworms in the year 5770, 6 million kilo less garbage would blight the beauty of our land. No one knows for sure how long an earthworm lives, but in one study a group of earthworms was observed for 15 years. At the end of this time, the earthworms were found to be young, healthy, and vigorous as ever. The earthworms do not carry or transmit diseases. All they ever produce are castings and more earthworms. An earthworm can easily produce more than one thousand offspring annually. One thousand mature breeders can produce a million earthworms. The earthworm has no eyes. Light sensitive cells on the skin enable it to maintain its course and avoid danger. These cells are also sensitive to touch. The earthworm has no lungs, taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide through its highly permeable skin. It has five hearts that pump blood through its body and works similar to the heart of a human. The earthworm has a mouth but does not chew its food. The earthworm swallows any piece of organic matter that enters its mouth where it passes into the gizzard, similar to that of a bird. There it is ground up with the help of tiny pebbles or grains of sand that serve as millstones. The earthworm absorbs the nutrients it needs for survival and passes the castings out of its anterior. The earthworm is an invertebrate, meaning it has no backbone. The absence of protruding appendages increases mobility. Lubricating mucus on its skin further allows the earthworm to pass through the roughest ground and escape the grasp of predators. An earthworm has the power to easily move stones that are fifty times its body weight.

Living off our Leftovers

Earthworms live off of our leftovers. They devour fruit and vegetable peels, many types of animal manure, and the leaves and grass clippings from our backyard. Fallen leaves in an orchard or forest that might need years to decompose are easily consumed by the earthworm. More than 50 percent of the contents that fill our garbage heaps are food for the earthworm. So much of the trash that packs our

landfills, dirties our oceans and lakes, and makes the air less pleasant to breathe can be converted into castings. In earlier times the importance of earthworms was recognized. The fertility of the Nile Valley can be attributed to the earthworm. Today, there is a growing appreciation of the work that the earthworm performs, both as a means of growing food and for recycling waste material.

Fertilizing Our Fields

Many countries throughout the world are reducing their use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides by converting animal wastes and organic matter into castings. Local governments are using earthworms to alleviate the problems of overcrowded landfills. Earthworms can produce more compost, in a shorter amount of time, with less effort, than any other recycling method. Raising earthworms is an easy thing to do. You can do it in your own home. Besides being a wonderful hobby, it is an excellent educational tool. If all you have is a small porch and a few house plants, you too can have your own earthworm bin, converting your fruit and vegetable wastes into beautiful castings that will enrich your plants, lawns, and gardens. It is a great way to protect the beautiful world that Hashem created. Have you ever considered how much garbage you dispose of each day? How many pounds of carrot and potato peels did you throw away during last week’s Shabbos preparations? What did you do with your apple cores, melon rinds, and cucumber peels? These items did not just disappear from the face of the earth. If every Jew in Eretz Yisrael fed one kilo of food wastes to earthworms, 6 million kilo less garbage would blight the beauty of our land. Four million kilos of castings would fertilize our fields, orchards, and gardens. “Ain lanu Eretz acheret.” And even for those who live somewhere else, we have a responsibility to protect our environment. With the help of the earthworm, we can do a better job.

Earthworm castings are no less than five times more beneficial than the finest top soil found anywhere in the world.

- Jean Pagnol, the “Passeur”-

eaving Ruchamah and the kids at the bus stop, Jo went alone to look for Jean Pagnol, the "passeur," who had been recommended to him in Nice. Saint Beat is not a big city, and Jo found him easily, after having heard from some locals that he came daily to the Café Mimosa around noon. When he walked into the café, Jo guessed right away which one of the customers was his man. You could not look more Basque than Pagnol. He was a great lump of a man of about 40, dressed in a goatskin vest, brown corduroy pants laced under the knees, and thick woolen socks inside canvas shoes. To complete the picture, he wore the inevitable "beret Basque." Pagnol noticed the intensity with which Jo was looking at him and understood that this was most probably a candidate for his services. The two men sized each other up for a second, then Jo inquired: "Monsieur Pagnol?" "Himself," answered Jean, then he took Jo's arm saying: "Let us go to my place to talk, walls have ears." Pagnol's house was a small building, built in the typical Provencal fashion-whitewashed walls with a red tile roof and wrought iron balcony. It was conveniently situated at the outskirts of town, within spitting distance of the mountains. There, the long process of haggling started. Pagnol wanted a lot of money. Fifty percent had to be paid right away and the balance before the last leg of the passage into Spain. Jo had no choice but to agree. After having clinched the deal with a handshake, Jo went to pick up his family. In Pagnol's barn where they were hiding, they met a few more Jews who were waiting like them for Pagnol 's minimum quota to be reached, as he was not prepared to make a trip if his financial requirements were not met. "You don't risk your life for peanuts!" he used to say. After some more Jews arrived the next day, the escape was planned for the same night. At dusk, Pagnol came into the barn to brief his customers about what lay ahead. "The Aneto Peak,” he explained, “is one of the highest of the Pyrenees. It lies more or less halfway between Saint Beat and the first Spanish town of Viella. As the crow flies, it is quite a short distance, but the mountains make the trip long and perilous. We shall actually need the whole night to reach the other side. “On the French side, we shall climb the mountain along the Garonne River. Once we reach the top, we shall have to go through the rocky Aneto Pass, physically the hardest part of our trip, and then you will be on your own to go down to the Spanish side, along the Segre River. Take only as much luggage as you are confident you will be able to carry

Too much baggage will slow us down and endanger everybody. Small children will have to be carried by their parents. “The risk of encountering a German patrol is limited since the Germans are not familiar with the mountainous terrain. I, on the contrary, have lived here all my life. I know each and every trail like my pocket. Any questions?" There were none. Everybody was just too terrified to ask anything. After dark, the members of the little troop came out of the barn, one by one, to regroup in the woods, at the foot of the mountain. At last, the long and arduous climbing started. They walked in single file up the narrow path overhanging the Garonne River. They had to progress carefully-- one false step and they would fall into the ravine to a certain death. The use of torches was out of question, a light beam could be seen miles away. The full moon would have to be sufficient. A little after midnight, having just left the banks of the Garonne, the fugitives rested a short while before confronting the steep Aneto Pass. When Pagnol gave the signal to start walking again, no one really felt he had rested enough. Pagnol, sportive and nimble, glided between the rocks with the agility of a feline. The Jews, being all city dwellers, who had little experience with mountain trails, had a hard time keeping up with him. Yet, with their lives at stake, they forced themselves to go on, ignoring their aches and pains. Finally, they reached the point where the path curved downwards, and they stopped again. Pagnol signaled them to gather around him in silence. He then explained in a low voice: "We are now approximately 50 meters away from the Spanish border. You should now pay me the balance of my dues and remain hidden in the bushes for a while. I will go down towards the border to check if all is clear for you to proceed further. I will be back in half an hour. When you go down, all you have to do is to walk in a straight line until you reach the Segre. Then you follow its banks to Viella." With mixed feelings of fear and excitement, the

fugitives obliged. Pagnol pocketed the money avidly and disappeared into the night. Half an hour passed, then still another half hour with no sign of Pagnol. A full hour later, the sun started to rise in the East, revealing the full, luxuriant beauty of the wilderness around them. Yet, instead of enjoying the picturesque scenery, all eyes were glued southward where, only 50 meters away, one could discern a couple of barracks with German soldiers milling around them. "We have been conned,” Jo said quietly. “Pagnol has directed us straight into the wolf 's maul. Now I can understand how he made himself a reputation of being the best "passeur." No one ever came back to complain!" The Jews held counsel. Most – like Jo – decided to go back to France and try some other means of escape. Only two young boys, who already had a close shave with the Gestapo, decided to stay put and hide until the next night, when they would try to pass the border by themselves. Jo and his family walked back northward, avoiding Saint Beat, so as not to meet Pagnol who, to be able to keep his money, would certainly have denounced them. They spent a few days in the woods, living rough, like wild animals, until they reached an isolated mountain village, where a complacent peasant agreed to take them in, employing Jo as a farmhand in exchange for food and lodging. *** A few years after the end of the war, while the Teichholzes were living back in Belgium, Jo read an announcement in the paper asking any individuals who knew Jean Pagnol of Saint Beat to come testify against him in court. Jo was only too happy to comply. He, of course, did not get his money returned to him, but Pagnol got convicted and sent to prison for 20 years. Jo could not make out if he got the 20 years for what he had done to the Jews, or because he never declared the fortune he made on them for tax purposes. "There is no peace for the wicked." to be continued...

Two Gluten-Free Favorites Many people find they are much more relaxed when they are off of gluten. And being relaxed can help us cope better with the present matzav as the country deals with a rocket barrage from Gaza. If you are gluten-sensitive or just feel like experimenting with gluten-free baking, here are two delicious gluten-free recipes to try out in your kitchen. And may we hear only b'soros tovos!

PIZZA Ingredients: Dough

• • • • • • • •

3 cups conditour flour (or 3 cups cornstarch plus 1 tsp xanthan gum) 1 Tbsp tapioca starch 3/4 Tbsp dried yeast 3/4 Tbsp demerara sugar 1¼ c. warm water 2 Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp granulated garlic 1 Tbsp sauce (See recipe below.)

Sauce (suggested amounts, can be adjusted to your own taste) • 260 grams tomato sauce • 1-2 tsp salt • 1 tsp sugar • 3 tsp oregano • 2-3 tsp granulated garlic • 2 tsp water

• grated yellow cheese for topping

Instructions: (Make the sauce first because some needs to be mixed into the dough.) In a small bowl, mix together all ingredients for the sauce. In a large bowl, mix all dry dough ingredients. Add in the wet ingredients, and continue to mix well. Set aside the dough to rise for about an hour, or until it doubles in volume. Line an oven tray with baking paper. Once the dough is ready, with wet hands (or a wet utensil), spread the dough on the oven tray. Keep on wetting your hands to spread the dough nice and even all over the tray.

Bake about 5 minutes at 180 C until the dough is dry and no longer sticky. Pour the sauce over the dough and sprinkle on the grated cheese to cover the sauce. Bake again until the cheese is fully melted.

Serve warm.

LIGHT CHEESE CAKE Ingredients:

Instructions:

• • • • •

Beat egg whites in one bowl, and in another bowl, mix egg yolks with the remaining ingredients. Once the whites are stiff and everything else is well mixed, fold the whites into the mixture slowly.

4 eggs 750 gr. 5% white cheese 6-7 Tbsp cornstarch 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 cup demerara sugar

For any questions, comments, or to order, call Zippora Zuber at 052 7698480, 02 580-0311, or email her at zipporazuber@gmail.com.

Alternately, split the batter into two bowls and mix 1-2 Tbsp of chocolate milk powder into one of them. Now you can make it into a marble cake or rings. In order to form a rings design, pour a spoonful of one mixture into the middle of the tin. In the middle of that, pour in a spoon of the other mixture, and so on. Bake until it no longer jiggles and becomes stiff. Or until very lightly brown. Turn off the oven and leave it in for another minute. Let it cool off for a few minutes, then place in fridge or freezer and serve cold.
