here’s no question that there are parks with more flower beds, better landscaping, and more elaborate jungle gyms for climbing, especially when you include in your survey the famous ones you remember from your childhood or your world travels. However, in my humble opinion, our home-grown Gan Sacher takes the prize when it comes to the sheer beauty of the Jewish family tribes who flock there during Ben Hazmanim. And the word “flock” is especially apropos when you see the flocks of children of all ages running and playing on the grass. Many of the dozens of encampments are even equipped with tables and chairs or an occasional tent. Some family groups are small with only one set of parents sitting on a blanket with their offspring. Then then there are sprawling extended families with the grandparents enthroned on their folding chairs and their generations surrounding them. The air is thick with barbecue smoke and the cries of the “yum bum bum” and popcorn hawkers. It’s been a hot, humid day, but now there’s a refreshing breeze and even a chill in the air as we congratulate ourselves for remembering to bring sweaters. To the right, next to the low stone wall, a minyan for Maariv is a microcosm of the entire Jewish world, with Chassidim, Litvish, Sefardi, Mizrachi, and Yerushalmi joining together. The joggers, the bikers, the teams playing kick ball, and two young sisters who lock hands and roll down the grassy slope. It’s a brilliant canvas I appreciate in all its many details that fill in with more and more flecks of color and light as my eyes wander near and far. In a scene like this, it’s not only the parents having nachas from their children, but everyone having nachas from each other.

Have a beautiful Shabbos, a wonderful rest of Ben Hazmanim, and a good Rosh Chodesh Elul.

Let's not allow the dominating technology of our generation crush the pure child within us who sees G-dliness crystal clear in everything, at every moment of the day and night. It can save a life.

My son WORKED in the Chabad Mitzva tanks , helping soldiers before entering Gaza, and those returning from the battles. One of the soldiers told him that he took with him into Gaza the snacks from a gift parcel. Once inside Gaza, he felt hungry and took out a wafer bar. It was wrapped in a note from a very young child, beautifully illustrated with the words: "Dear Soldier, enjoy this; don't forget to make a bracha on it first." He was so touched by the hard work which had gone into it and the great concern for his spiritual welfare that he felt he couldn't let the child down. He would make the bracha before eating. There was just one problem - he had no idea what blessing to say. He looked up and saw a religious soldier some distance away so he went over to him to ask for his assistance with saying the blessing. No sooner had he done so, when he heard a loud blast. He turned round to see the exact spot where he had been standing just a couple of minutes ago blown to pieces and full of rubble. My son witnessed the power of an intention to do a mitzva, even before doing the mitzva. It made him think about the power of the mitzva itself, and then about the power of a mitzva together with special intentions. My husband thought about how the soldier had listened to one of “Life's Messages.” He got a signal and he responded. But I couldn't stop thinking about the child who wrote that message. How many adults would write that? We would be afraid of insulting the recipient. Even if we could find a way to

do it without being insulting, it usually wouldn't occur to us to do it. We sometimes separate the material from the spiritual. But that very young child was aware that they cannot be separated. The child's concern for the soldier's physical wellbeing was automatically intertwined with concern for his spiritual welfare. Let's not allow the dominating technology of our generation crush the pure child within us who sees G-dliness crystal clear in everything, at every moment of the day and night. It can save a life. -S.K. Thank you for the article “The Chain of Generations

Center” which gave details about a wonderful exhibit made entirely of glass. I couldn’t help but think of Kristalnacht in Germany when anything Jewish that was made of glass was destroyed and shattered—synagogues, Jewish storefronts and homes, etc. The devastation was unbelievable and many lives were lost. Our enemies destroy, but we build. This new museum shows what beauty can be made from glass. I can’t wait to see it. -

n past columns, we’ve discussed the different principals of psychology in business (authority, consistency, reciprocity, scarcity, and social proof) from Dr. Robert Cialdini’s work on persuasion in a business environment. Separately, we’ve discussed Dr. Bluma Zeigarnik and the Zeigarnik Effect: How people are psychologically conditioned to go up levels and how they don’t consider themselves “finished” with something until they reach what they perceive as “the end.” Hence, coin and stamp collecting, the Beanie Baby craze, and even status levels in credit cards and in frequent flyer programs are all based around the human need to have the “whole set.” Admit it. Do you ever read the little blurbs at the end of a column, talking about the columnist? Or when a speaker finished their lecture and says, “For those of you here today, I have a special offer,” doesn’t your brain switch to off position, because you sense that the content part is over and salesmanship is starting?” What Zeigarnik also proved, so valuable to business people, is that while we will read a newspaper column until the end, it’s not because it’s always interesting to us. Rather, it’s because we cannot stop in the middle without causing ourselves frustration and mental disruption. And we’d usually choose to finish what we are in the middle of than face that open loop. It’s important to control, or at least try to guide somewhat, how your brand is perceived on the street. Donald Trump must maintain his brand image of private jets, luxury apartments, and what he says (and I believe him) is his real hair. Warren Buffet, on the other hand, can be as wealthy as he is and not need any trappings of wealth. It’s because his brand image totally deemphasizes that, and it’s congruent with his image. Even the tremendous charity he has given was given to a foundation with Bill and Melinda Gates’ name on it, not his own. But this week, I want to take you to the next level of awareness about how this works—and why. What do you want to be known for in your marketplace? A good cook, a popular executive, a doctor or attorney with specific knowledge or skill that, if better known, would make you a stronger force in your world? Make a list of the three to five things that you want to be known for, and that are most important at this stage of your career. As your spheres of influence grow, these will change. But for now, these are the items that you need to Zeigarnikize.

THE ENGLISH UPDATE

Focus on the message you want to get across and place it within the context of a conversation. As long as what you say is educational, relevant, and in proper context, Mrs. Zeigarnik will ensure that the person you are communicating with will be engaged in what you have to say. Whether business expert or celebrity style expert, status greatly lowers the barriers to obtaining new clients. This is both because those folks are more likely to know who you are, as well as because a good trust factor does wonders in helping people decide if you are a good investment of their hard earned cash. Every one of us has made financial mistakes in the past, and we have the subconscious fear of “am I about to make the same mistake I made back then for which my wife/mother/self has never forgiven me?” It’s always present as a checks and balance system of sorts. In order for a transaction to happen, that fear must be overcome as we feel that this time it truly is a decision that we won’t regret. Let your prospective clients know what it is you do and why you are tremendous value. Because with every such interaction, the fear of having wasted good money on a dumb decision recedes tremendously. Proactively using the strategy above can totally transform an organization. It can move an enterprise from “push” style, where a business is in the lower position, trying to move up, over to “pull” style, where people reach out to you, already presold by the value you’ve created in the marketplace. This enables a better, easier, more painless sales process, where most of the hesitancy has been extracted from the interaction. Using the free and ever-growing number of channels available to promote your message in your marketplace, being consistent at whatever strategies you decide to employ, and Zeigarnikizeing them, you can hone in on the messages and positioning you seek, and communicate that to your potential client base. Pick your positioning carefully in the marketplace. Different positionings have different profit margins, but also require a different investment and upkeep, which is not always affordable or worthwhile. Choose carefully, and Zeigarnikize it. AN ECLIPSE OF MEMORY:

THE CHEVRON MASSACRE OF 1929 by Dvorah Chavkin Stone

Like a footnote in history is the memory of the tragic episode that decimated, with pernicious vehemence, the Jewish community in Chevron. This pogrom, which occurred on Shabbos morning, August 24, 1929, took the lives of more than 60 defenseless Jews. It is a tragedy that has been obscured by the cataclysmic events of the Holocaust and more recent wars.

8

THE ENGLISH UPDATE

The monstrous and deliberate destruction of lives, unparalleled in the course of human history, revealed with succinct clarity the moral bankruptcy of our civilization. Yet the events of the Holocaust exceeded the Chevron massacre only in scope. The gluttonous appetite for slaughter, revealed in the

unspeakable tortures perpetrated on the Jews in Chevron by their Arab neighbors is difficult to confront or comprehend.

The Chevron Community in 1929 Chevron, cherished since antiquity as one of the four holiest cities in Israel, has been throughout its existence an integral part of the Jewish people. Universally recognized as the burial place of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs, this city witnessed the crowning and reign of King David, and served as the capital of Yehudah during Biblical times. The fact that it has been continuously inhabited by Jews, interrupted only by forced expulsions, has forged an inexorable bond between Chevron and the Jewish people. In 1929, the Chevron community of 500 mainly Sephardic Jews and a significant presence of Lubavitcher Chassidim was a rich conglomeration of various Jewish traditions that was reflected in its many institutions. The Slabodka Yeshiva, a world renowned institute of advanced Jewish scholarship, had moved several years earlier from Kovno, Lithuania. It attracted an elite cadre of the most outstanding scholars from Europe, Russia, Canada, and the United States. Like the rest of the Chevron Jewish community, they had no political aspirations. They were interested only in enhancing their spiritual development by living in the city where every step and every stone, deeply imbued with the rich history or their forefathers, resonated their presence. The Arab and Jewish communities in Chevron enjoyed a remarkably good relationship that was solidified by mutually beneficial economic enterprises and close personal daily interaction. Local Arab sheiks would spend long, blustery winter evenings playing chess in Eliezer Slonim's home in a display of warmth and camaraderie. The relations between the two communities was so good that Jews were lulled by a false sense of security and failed to regard with any credence the rumors that "something" was going to happen. It was beyond the impossible to comprehend that their Arab neighbors would harm them.

Systematic Massacre I had always assumed that the Chevron Massacre was a spontaneous eruption. I was not prepared to find the historical record that revealed a systematic assault calculated to destroy, with satanic deliberateness, the entire Jewish community. The descriptions of the unspeakable tortures and mutilations that were inflicted over a period of days on the victims who were ferreted out of their homes and hiding places created a barbaric spectacle of evil for the sake of terror. Sixty-seven defenseless souls, helpless infants, elderly folk, the pure and the poor, the sages and the simple, were mercilessly murdered by their Arab neighbors. Over 150 people suffered serious wounds. The inestimable psychic damage that the survivors must have endured for the rest of their lives is beyond quantification. The Imam, the Arab religious leader of Chevron, is credited with fanning the flame of Arab fanaticism and directly causing the massacre. He triggered the mob that descended

with unbridled fury down the steps of mosque in the Maarat HaMechpelah, on the Friday morning, then proceeded directly to the school were they found their first victim. Shmuel Rosenberg was the quintessential scholar and a most gentle soul who rarely left the study hall. He was so completely absorbed in his studies and sat perched over his book, oblivious to the rowdy mob that invaded the sanctity of the study hall. He remained sitting in utter shock as his blood flowed from the head wound caused by rocks thrown at him, drenching the book that he was reading. The mob knifed him repeatedly until he died. After Rosenberg's murder, the authorities assured the community that they would be safe if they remained in their homes. Ben Zion Gershon was a crippled druggist whose kindness in serving the poor Arabs - without payment, was legendary. He died after sustaining tortures too hideous to describe. The sanctity of the synagogues, school, homes and even the medical clinic that served the Arabs was invaded- and destroyed. The Patriarch Avraham Avinu's Beit Knesset that was built in 1501 was also destroyed and converted into a sheep's pen.

Martyred Chevron Yeshiva Students The students who were attacked in their dormitory demonstrated uncommon courage in their attempt to defend themselves. From which crucible of ethereal strength did these gentle scholars, accustomed only to the challenges of the intellect, find the indomitable spirit to engage in a futile defense against inflamed and armed mobs? Avraham Dov Shapira died defending himself. Moshe Aaron Rips begged, not for his life, but for a momentary reprieve in order that he could say his final prayers. He was murdered just as he started to pray. Twenty year old Israel Arye Cheichal and his 17 year old brother, Eliyahu Dov, demonstrated super-human strength in defending themselves until they were finally overcome. Their fight enabled others to escape. A British officer witnessed the vicious attack on the brothers, their heroic but futile defense, and dastardly murder - all in abject silence. Shlomo Unger, a 26 year old from Zgug, Poland could have saved his life with one word. His distinctly non-Jewish appearance made his attackers hesitate and ask him if he indeed was Jewish. Not willing to save his life through compromising his soul, Unger proclaimed, "I am a Jew!" His proud defiance cost him his life. He and his wife became another link in the hollowed chain of Jewish martyrdom which stretches across the continuum of history. He left us, his spiritual heirs- a legacy of uncompromising courage and two orphaned, infant children. Zalmen Wilensky and his wife were determined not to be separated and were so tightly embraced that the rioters stabbed them both at the same time. Wilensky, who sustained the more serious blows, died leaving his wife the unremitting legacy of being forced for the rest of her life to relive the pain of having her life saved at the same time her husband lost his. The seemingly fickle hand of fate operates with exacting precision under the guise of random vacillation. Israel

The Same Familiar Tactics

We are seeing now in the reporting on the present hostilities in Gaza and in other conflicts in the Middle East the insidious manipulation and distortion of events which is a grievous assault on the lives of the victims and on historical authenticity. The same thing was done after the 1929 Chevron Massacre when the Arabs tried to deny the barbaric nature of the tragedy. They published the following disclaimer which I found in Chevron’s Memorial Book.”

Scandals Of Jewish Propoganda

Impartial medical examination contradicting Jewish physicians' reports show NO ATROCITIES and NO MUTULATIONS at Hebron. Actual facts do no substantiate the High Commissioner's statement in the Proclamation of the 1st of September, 1929: "accompanied by acts of unspeakable savagery." Upon strong insistence of various Jewish bodies, the government deputed on 11.9.29 a board of three British medical officers for the exhumation of Jews who were killed in the "disturbances at Hebron” in order to verify Jewish doctors' reports of alleged mutilations and atrocities committed by Arabs. The Government arranged that this

Bergstein, a student in Chevron, was saved because he had an appointment in another city that day. A family who came to visit for a Bar Mitzvah celebration that weekend was murdered along with the residents of Chevron. Even a gust of wind can be an agent of rescue. A young American student named Gottesman was returning to Chevron even though he was warned by his friends in Jerusalem that something had occurred in Chevron and that he should postpone his return. Gottesman did not pay any attention to his friends' warnings until the whisperings and grimaces of the Arabs in the taxi that they shared made him realize his rash and unwise decision to return. He had no pretext with which to leave the taxi that was taking him to Chevron - until a gust of wind blew his hat off. After retrieving his hat, he kept going - in the opposite direction on the road to life. Decades after the massacre, Feivel Russ still could not think of his murdered classmate without intense pain. The 17 year old Wolf Greenberg was a precious, delicate youth whose unquenchable search for knowledge propelled him to leave their school Mesivta Torah V’daas in New York and go to Chevron to study. The vision of Greenberg reviewing his studies at midnight was the last that Feivel Russ had ever seen him. He hadn't seen or heard of his friend until the news of his murder in Chevron made the headlines.

The Continuum The memory of Wolf Greenberg, the poignant legacy of Kiddush Hashem, idealism, and unrivaled heroism that emerged from the cauldron of perverse destruction is one that we dare not forget. And sadly, these are footnotes in history whose path are on a continuum, however cloudy, that connects to the martyred yeshiva boys Gilad, Ayal, and Naftali. An eclipse of memory is too dangerous a possibility to entertain. Since the Chevron Massacre of 1929, how many more precious souls have been martyred in the tumultuous

board should be accompanied by three representative Arab doctors and two Jewish doctors and a Jewish lawyer. 28 Jewish bodies were exhumed and carefully examined. No mutilations, no unspeakable acts of savagery were found. The Jewish doctors asked the examiners to desist from further exhumation considering the number of bodies examined sufficient to form a decision. The Arab doctors insisted that all the Jewish bodies should be exhumed and examined. The official board desisted from further exhumation after obtaining a written statement from the Jews to that effect. The Arab doctors have been asked by those whom they represent to give a detailed report on the subject. This report will be a historical document from which the world will know that Jewish propaganda in these disturbances was built on falsehood to deceive public opinion, collect more money, and reflect on the dignity and honor of the Arabs. We welcome impartial enquiries. Down with false propaganda. Secretaries of the Arab Executive Beyt-Ul-Makdes Press, Jerusalem

march of Jews through history? How many wars and conflicts in Israel, since then, have robbed those who faithfully go out to defend their country, of their lives? How many families are suffused with a deep, raw emotion, a void that is grafted onto their psyches - one that never leaves them? From the martyrs of Chevron to Gilad and Ayal and Naftali, the path is clear. Rabbi Elchanon Wasserman, a most distinguished scholar and saintly personality, traveled to America to raise funds for his yeshiva but refused to remain in the safety of the U.S. He returned to be with his students in war-torn Europe during the Holocaust. When Lithuanian soldiers discovered him, his sons, Tzvi Yehudah Leib and Naftali Benish, and his students, it was obvious that their deaths were moments away. Rabbi Wasserman encouraged those with him to purify their hearts and minds so that they would be perfectly wholesome sacrifices to atone for and engender the safety of the remaining Jews. One can't help but notice that Rabbi Wasserman's yahrtzeit, the 25th of Sivan, was in close proximity to the days when the three missing Israeli boys' bodies were discovered. Given the astounding fortitude with which the boys’ parents faced the most devastating circumstances and the uncommonly radiant aspects of the boys’ personalities that were revealed after their tragic passing, it seems that Rabbi Wasserman's parting words could easily have been echoed by the soundless, thunderous thoughts of these precious three boys. The Baal Shem Tov's dictum-- "Forgetfulness leads to Exile and remembrance leads to Redemption"—is a most succinct expression of an eternal truth and it resonates with astonishing clarity right now. Let us remember not to forget it. Dvorah Chavkin Stone’s features have appeared in magazines, newspapers, and research journals in the US, England, Mexico, and Israel. She is the Editor of "Explorations In Soular Space" on the web.

Report on the First Annual JBNF Conference "Doing Business in Jerusalem" The First Annual JBNF Conference, which took place at Binyanei Hauma on Thursday, August 14th, showed an unprecedented wave of entrepreneurship, investment, and business innovation. The cooperation between the private sector, academia, and government, spurred on by the drive of Mayor Nir Barkat, is getting results. Awareness is growing regarding Jerusalem's hi-tech/startup area, where we are beginning to see a reversal of the long standing trend of businesses moving out of Jerusalem. With sponsorship provided by the Jerusalem Development Authority and Philip L. Stein & Associates, the Annual JBNF Conference was held as part of The Event. (We thank The Event’s organizers, IMP and THE ENGLISH UPDATE, for their support). This year highlighted Jerusalem’s progress toward becoming one of Israel’s main business centers. JBNF is pleased to be a leader in spearheading Jerusalem’s transformation into Israel’s commercial capital. At the conference, Hanan Brand, from JVC and founder of Madein JLM, presented some astonishing news about Jerusalem’s business sector: the

level of funding of Jerusalem-based startups in the last three years has tripled, from $ 45 million in 2012, to $110 million in 2013, and reaching $122 million for 36 start-ups in the first eight months of 2014. This meteoritic growth is due, in part, to the support of the Jerusalem Development Authority. Shai Melcer, director of Bio-Jerusalem, showed how the JDA, through two programs, Bio-Jerusalem and JNext, has invested heavily in and broadened the infrastructure and resources available to entrepreneurs to accelerate the growth of the city's hi-tech and biomed industry. Jerusalem’s commercial progress has also been driven by the strong collaborative atmosphere cutting through cultures, sectors, and borders. JBNF has been playing a major role in this collaborative atmosphere, encouraging networking, training, and business development throughout these last years. One of the striking things evident at the JBNF conference was the emergence of entrepreneurship and innovation in all sectors of the Jerusalem community, including students, academic faculty, chareidim,

women, new immigrants and more. This new spirit involves not just various groups working on their own, but includes collaborative initiatives bringing together talented people from different backgrounds. Incubators, hubs, accelerators, etc, are springing up all over the city, in the chareidi sector and on the campuses of the universities, colleges, and hospitals. Shandy Babad, director of Temech, announced the opening of the Jerusalem Hub, which targets orthodox business women, based in Shaarei Ha’Ir, next to the Central Bus Station. Baruch Gross presented Parnassa, the new chareidi incubator at Har Hahozvim. Michael Mizrahi, from the Azrieli College of Engineering, announced that their new accelerator, AtoBe, is calling for entrepreneurs to come and join them. Ziv Barcesat, presented Yerushalab, a community center for the creating and running of 3D printers in Musrara. Roy Munin, co-founder with Hanan Brand of MadeinJLM, talked about the hub and incubator that they are setting up which is also based in Musrara. JBNF is pleased to be playing a part in this cross-cultural exchange. Since its formation, JBNF has always encouraged and assisted business cooperation among Jerusalem’s diverse population. Each member of the sum-up panel (Uri Admini from JVC, Gadi Mazor from OurCrowd, and Harold Wiener from Terra Ventures Partners) concluded that Jerusalem is on the fast track to becoming the startup capital of Israel. JBNF looks forward to continuing being a significant part

Finally, in order to encourage recognition of Jerusalem’s leading startups, JBNF chose its top five Jerusalem startups for 2014: Glide, Brainsway, Freightos, Revelator, and Abe's Market. The five awards were presented by Ofer Berkovitz, deputy mayor of Jerusalem, in a ceremony chaired by Haim Kravitz, CEO of Angelnet, The Israeli association for Angel Investors. Bruno Guez, founder and CEO, gave a riveting presentation on Revelator, which offers a unique platform for musicians to distribute their music. His proud father flew in special from France to attend the ceremony.

Education

by Esther Sender Entering a New Habitat Someone once asked me, "Are you going to have more children?" and my immediate reaction was "As long as they don't have to go to school." Because if what my child learns in school is, "I'm not good," then I'm not sure I've fulfilled my obligation as a parent to educate my child. If a child can't sit from 8 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon and in the yeshiva years until 9 in the evening, then that's what they learn. I’ve often thought to myself when I compare their experience to mine is: We did it, so why is this different? But something was very different. We had arts and crafts, gym period, woodshop, music, playground time, and lunch. We didn’t have 100 degree weather and sit in a suit. We were natives and knew the language, what was going on, and the intent of our education. Coming to school with a child in the Israeli school system and thinking on any level that this is also how it works may offer some surprises, serious disappointments, and inappropriately packed lunch boxes. I remember when we first “came off the boat”, and I sent my four year old son to gan in bluish/ jeans-ish kind of pants. Poor thing, how he suffered. So many little mistakes can be made when you’re not in your natural habitat, but those little mistakes on a little person can turn out to look pretty big.

Creating Another Option There are volumes worth of these stories, and here's one of them and what one mother did about it. I went to visit Rebecca Aminoff of Beit Shemesh who founded the school Kol Hadassah for Anglo immigrants. Here are pieces of her story. “We made aliyah when my daughter was two. She went to a Bais Yaakov gan and there she developed selective mutism which is an anxiety disorder.

“I don't believe it was any particular incident, and maybe it was the new language, the large class size, something somebody said, or a combination of things. But my daughter didn't speak after that for four years. “As an immigrant to a new country and a new culture, I didn't have the confidence to make a decision. I wanted to pull her out, I felt something was not right, but upon entering this new environment, you sometimes lose your confidence in knowing what to do as a parent. I see it now working with the parents of the girls who come to Kol Hadassah. “These parents are amazing people, each and every one of them, but sometimes they don't know what exactly is going on because of the change of location and having to tackle a difficult language. Teenagers see their parents struggle and lose confidence in them. Then the child has to translate notes from teachers and help them with bus schedules which are little things that a parent in their native home would not think twice about. “But even if we don't know the language and even if we don't know the system, we still know how to parent our own children. We need to listen to that parenting instinct. “After understanding that there was a great need for a new approach in our community of Anglos, I decided to go to university to get my Masters in Jewish education, specializing in leadership. Afterwards, I worked in a boys’ school, and then opened my own for girls. I really felt there was such a strong need for a school for girls who were struggling but not at risk. I looked around and saw amazing rehab programs, amazing mainstream programs, but no other options. “We learn here at Kol Hadassah at a girl’s own pace with a home schooling system. In the morning we have no-pressure Torah classes with subjects that apply to the girl's life today, and as a result, to her future."

Pioneers Helping Each Other I was actually at Kol Hadassah and saw what is going on. Girls are happy, they are motivated, and they are all amazing individuals. Now, it's not the usual Bais Yaakov style, and it won’t fit every size. But, if you have a girl who has been squeezed into something that's not comfortable for her or let’s go a step further, hurts her, then this might be an option. Keeping my children in schools that fit them was one of the greatest challenges I experienced living in Israel. I had to watch a child suffer, not knowing even what or how to do anything about it, and not even always understanding what exactly they were suffering from, not knowing where to begin because it's all in another language, culture, and expectation barometer. But, I am in no way complaining, just explaining. I think Israel is doing an outstanding job, and we are here to make it more amazing with our talents, skills, and understandings. It's just part of being a pioneer, a confusing part in the maze, the adolescence of our journey, and I believe 100 percent that it will all work out perfectly, and even better than that. I have already seen many of my friends who came to Israel and went through the whole process finally see the fruits of their labors-- children who grew up wise. There is one thing we can do, and that is to help one another. I once heard a very special guest speaker from the Old City, and one of the things he said was that each of us is on a ladder. This means there is always one person a rung above us and a person one rung below us. Sometimes you’re the one above, and sometimes you’re the one below. If I happen in some way to be on a rung above in any experience or I know someone who is, I would be only too happy to share that information with you. Natural Health

You’re Smarter than You Think

Yael Tusk, MS, OM is a U.S. board certified practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She resides in Jerusalem, where she treats both adults and children, and gives classes on hypnosis for childbirth. She can be reached at: 02-581-7415, or 052-768-4438

I received a call from a client/friend a few months ago. She was irate about an Inbox letter which she felt was a direct affront to me, as the alternative health writer for the Update. The letter warned people to do research before seeking alternative treatments. Not to worry. Those who pursue natural and alternative medicine are often the most well researched patients. They are usually educated enough to be intimidating to doctors. Being knowledgeable is the most important thing you can do for your health. The most vulnerable and compliant patients are generally the least informed. They tend to be victims of unnecessary treatments and even surgeries which can have lifelong negative health consequences.

“Is it really necessary?” The term “unnecesarean” was coined to describe the unprecedented rise in c-sections. (In the U.S., one in three births is via cesarean!) The increase in surgical births has not been associated with better birth outcomes. In fact, a cesarean is major surgery with all the risks involved. One of the reasons I began giving childbirth classes was to put mothers back in control and prevent them from becoming victims of risky medical procedures, unless absolutely necessary. Women who are trying for natural births after cesareans are also most likely to be successful when they are well educated. Tip: If the doctor says that a C-section is necessary, ask if they can wait an hour. If they can, you know it’s not a real emergency. For more on this subject, come take my course.

Retaining Control If you’ve received a diagnosis and a suggested treatment and would like to retain control over your health, I suggest you do the following: Find out more about the diagnosis you’ve received. Become at least as informed as your doctor. Then evaluate whether the diagnosis is accurate. Do you actually have this condition? While a second opinion may be helpful, keep in mind that most doctors get their information from the same place. So you must also do your own research. And don’t think for a second that you’re not capable of understanding what your doctor knows. You are You have a responsibility to yourself and your family to know all the risks and benefits of any medical treatment. Especially the questionable fad of “preventative” medicine. Oftentimes, non-diseases are treated as illnesses, turning healthy people into lifelong patients. An

important example of this is statin drugs used to lower cholesterol (Lipitor, etc.). Years ago, medical authorities identified an arbitrary cholesterol level as high, falsely transforming millions of healthy people into cardiac patients. In recent history, the public became aware that the cumulative scientific evidence has proven that cholesterol level does not correlate with heart disease. In other words, people with high cholesterol were not at greater risk of suffering from a heart attack. At that point, Lipitor should have been removed from the market, since lowering cholesterol does not reduce heart disease. Instead, the drug industry concluded that since cholesterol level does not predict heart disease, the screening process for cardiac patients should be broadened to include other factors (such as weight, blood pressure, and smoking status). That makes sense. However, with perverted logic, they went on to conclude that people found to be at risk should be prescribed cholesterol medication! So instead of being very bad for business, they manipulated the information to increase their target market. You can check the veracity of this story for yourself. After you do that, you can use your own judgment to decide whether you want to be taking statins. This leads me to my second point. Research the treatment you are being offered. What are the risks? Is the treatment more dangerous than the disease? How common are the side effects? Are the side effects more severe than your current symptoms? Many people get stuck in a vicious cycle where they are taking medications to treat the side effects of their original medications, only to watch their health slowly deteriorate. Often, many of their symptoms are not due to the original disease, but to all the drugs or surgery they’ve received. After weighing the risks of the disease against the risks of the treatment, find out if any effective alternative treatments are available. The media rarely gives us a well rounded picture. It usually provides us with the biased voice of the medical industry. We are manipulated into being terrified of disease, feeling totally powerless, and at the mercy of medical advancement. No situation is hopeless. And modern medicine does not hold exclusive rights to healing. Rather than believing in “cutting edge” medicine’s power to fix theoretical defects in the human body, we’d best start believing in the body’s G-d given ability to heal itself. Health is not found in the halls of hospitals or in pharmaceutical laboratories. It’s in you.

s mentioned before, when they failed to flee into Spain, Jo and Ruchamah escaped towards the mountainous back country, staying with a farmer for whom Jo was working. Though life had not spoiled him, Jo had been a diamond dealer before the war. Working in the fields was harsh on him, yet he had no choice-- this was the only way he could hope to survive the war. As months passed, the Germans became more circumspect in their search for Jews and even the Provence hinterland could not be considered safe anymore. Jo and his family had to move on again, further away from the city. Jo found a village, perched high in the mountains, whose name I have forgotten, where a farmer named Marcel Leforestier had agreed to rent out to him the barn where he kept his hay. In other circumstances, the price would have been considered outrageous, enough to rent a four room apartment in the city, but things being the way they were, Jo was happy to pay whatever Leforestier asked for. To whoever would ask – i.e., almost everybody – Marcel would say that the newcomers were distant cousins who came from Artois in the North of France. Most villagers probably suspected the truth right away, and even the least cunning among them had their doubts. Still, nobody denounced them, unlike many of inhabitants of the villages they had hidden in previously and out of which they had had to run for their lives. This particular village was so isolated, that its inhabitants lived an almost normal life, without feeling much concerned about the historical events unfolding before the eyes of the world. Jo and Ruchamah came out of their hiding place almost daily, mixing with the locals, so as not to look suspicious in their eyes, as if to say: "We have nothing to hide, do we?" This is how they ended up being part of the community, and became acquainted with most of the highly original local characters. For instance, there was Moustache, the blabbering barber, Noel Moustier, the baker with his long mane always covered in white flour, Paul Morvandeau, the mayor, with the typical rotundity and blotchy complexion of an alcohol abuser, Antoine Pichu, the mailman who somehow knew everything about everybody, Benoit Tocquard, the local fada (simpleton) that no French village can be without, and many others. There was also the infamous Gontran Sigognac, the haughty physician with the aristocratic demeanor. Jo would always try to avoid him since he was only too aware of his racist, even anti-Semitic convictions. Gontran never missed an occasion for denigrating Jews, even in Jo's presence. Jo was sure Sigognac knew about him being Jewish, yet this did not deter him from being sarcastic about the Chosen People. He would greet Jo saying: "Good morning Mister‌Terol?" He had a way of insisting on the name Terol, which Jo did not like. What's more, he was on

Jo approached them hesitantly, inquiring: "Excuse me, S i r , a r e n ' t y o u r e la t e d t o M r . S h o l o m A l e i c h e m ? " excellent terms with Obengruppenfuhrer Herr Waldemar Scheuerlappen, frequently inviting him to have a drink at Gaston Poirot's Café Bellevue, when the German passed through the village at the head of his troops. At this stage of the German occupation, Jews could still correspond with each other, sending their mail "poste restante" (to remain until called for), so as not to have to reveal any address. This is how Ruchamah learned that two of her brothers were held prisoners by the Germans: one as a P.O.W. in Germany, and the other in Auschwitz. Both came back after the war, thank G-d! The third brother was expected to come and visit them very soon. She also learned that a few of her younger cousins had managed to escape into Switzerland, some, like Jacquot, even in comical circumstances. At school, Jacquot had always been the subject of his friends' jokes because of his size. Now eighteen, he looked like he was only twelve, being short and baby-faced. Having painstakingly managed to reach the last French village before the Swiss border, he was wondering how on earth he would succeed in passing the border, without any identifying documents, when he noticed that, every morning, the boys of the local school would follow their priest over the border to play football on the Swiss side and return an hour later. Since the German border guards were used to their going back and forth, they would routinely let the boys through. Without hesitation, the next morning, Jacquot stripped off his clothes and, in underpants and undershirt, he followed the boys, in single file and at a run, into Switzerland. Kicking the ball only once, for the fun of it, he waived to the Pater and ran off. He wrote to Jo: "I am naked…but free!" Later, Jacquot would tell people who ridiculed him for his size: "If I would have been but one inch taller, I would have died a long time ago!" The Teichholzes for their part, did not dare trying to escape to Switzerland with two little children, and chose to remain quietly in their barn. Being accustomed to live in a three room apartment in Antwerp, it was not easy to be confined to a foul smelling barn, sleeping on scratching stacks of hay and fetching water every morning at the village pump. Still, when Ruchamah's brother joined them, Jo received him with open arms and offered him hospitality

as if his barn was the palace of Versailles. A few days later, Jo noticed at the village's only bus stop a young, exhausted looking couple, sitting on a bench. From their looks, he was almost certain that they were Jewish. She had her hair covered in a kerchief, and he wore a beret Basque, like the locals, but somehow, it looked out of place on top of his bearded head. It is a remarkable thing how Diaspora Jews recognize each other, even in the absence of clear exterior signs of their Jewish identity. Jo could see that the young couple had become uneasy because they had realized that Jo was looking at them intensely. Jo approached them hesitantly, inquiring: "Excuse me, Sir, aren't you related to Mr. Sholom Aleichem?" Looking relieved, the young man made an effort to smile and answered: "Not really, but I know whom you are referring to." Jo then suggested to them to follow him to the barn, where he would give them some food. The young man thanked him effusively, explaining that, because of a German raid on their town, they had to leave their home in a hurry, taking with them only what they had in their pockets. They had not eaten anything for the past 36 hours. When they reached the barn, Jo's brother-in-law got angry at him, screaming: "Are you out of your mind? Do you want to turn this barn into a synagogue, or what? Do you even know if you’ve been followed?" Upon hearing this, Jo remembered that they had indeed encountered Dr. Sigognac on their way back. The doctor had laughed and mumbled something inaudible upon meeting them. He got scared, but what was he supposed to do? Could he leave a starving Jewish couple on the sidewalk without helping them? The next morning at daybreak, Ruchamah's brother left for Switzerland. The Weinstocks, the young couple, left a few days later for Spain, having completely recovered and feeling up to the challenge. Before he left the barn, Abraham Weinstock thanked Jo wholeheartedly again, saying: "How can I ever repay you your hospitality and generosity?" "I'll tell you," Jo cut him off. "Go to Spain and build a nice Jewish family to ensure the continuity of our people!" After a last handshake, more eloquent than a thousand words, Jo and Ruchamah watched the Weinstocks disappear into the darkness of the woods. to be continued

Recipes recipe by Jamie Geller

Shortcut Shakshuka

The ultimate Israeli one pan breakfast or anytime meal, Shakshuka is a dish of eggs poached or baked in a sauce of tomatoes, peppers, and onions spiced with cumin. It is believed to be of Tunisian origin. I use prepared Matbucha (a cooked dish of tomatoes, peppers and garlic ) as a super duper shortcut ( hey, no knife or cutting board required) for this favorite. You can spruce up your Shakshuka by adding feta, spinach, or sautéed eggplant. Serve with fresh bread and chopped Israeli salad on the side. Prep Time 5 min . Cook Time : 15 min Ready Time : 20 min 5 Servings

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • •

1 Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp paprika 1/4 tsp fresh cracked black pepper, plus more for serving 1/8 tsp cayenne or chili flakes, or more to taste 2 (500 gram) containers of Moroccan Matbucha 6 large eggs 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt torn cilantro leaves, for serving fresh bread, for serving

Directions 1 Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. 2 Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add cumin, paprika, black pepper, and cayenne, and cook, stirring for one minute.

3 Pour in Moroccan Matbucha and give a quick stir to combine. 4 Using the back of a spoon, make a well in the Matbucha and gently crack an egg into the well. Repeat with remaining eggs. Season eggs with salt.

5 Transfer skillet to oven and bake until eggs are just set, 7 to 8 minutes for runny yolk, or 9 to 10 minutes for firm yolk. Alternatively, cover and poach on the stovetop.

6 Garnish with additional fresh cracked black pepper and sprinkle with cilantro. 7 Serve immediately, hot from the pan, and scoop onto plates at the table. Pass bread in a basket. TEL AZEKAHBATTLESITE OF DAVID & GOLIAS The famous Elah Valley is a mere short drive of approximately two kilometers from the Ramat Bet Shemesh junction in the direction of Kiryat Gat. From the slopes of the hills on the right, the site of ancient Azekah, Golias, the mighty giant Philistine warrior came stamping down. He dared b’nei Yisrael to choose one man to fight him. Young Dovid, the shepherd, arrived from the hills on the left. In this very valley, just about where the main road of today traverses, Dovid slayed the mighty Golias with a stone slung from his slingshot. Turning right just past Moshav Zacharia and a left into the Park Britania, we can drive to the top Mount Tel Azekah. A short walk from the parking area brings us to the summit, affording a most magnificent view of the entire Emek Ha’Elah beneath, and the vast countryside around. Walking along the path, lined with the stone engravings from the Tanach vividly describing the entire episode, we can literally relive the Dovid and Golias confrontation. This is a great outing for adults and children. Enjoy! Artzeinu Tours will also include the Bar Kochva hideout, the Stalagtite caves, tanks from the Yom Kippur war in Radar Hill, Kever Dan, and more on their tour to this area.
