When You Go To Geulah This Erev Shabbos, Remember… The Store Is On Rechov Malachi! Maadanei Zahav Fresh, Delicious, Spotless…

I

When it was discovered that the boys had been murdered, we continued to pray for the elevation of their souls, that their parents and families be comforted, that Hashem have mercy on His People, and that this terrible blow should be the last. Then the Hamas rockets began to fly at a furious pace with red alert sirens going off, not only in the South but all across the Land. We began to daven for the safety of every Jew who was now being targeted by our enemies. The battles in Gaza began, and we davened for each of the soldiers who were fighting a treacherous urban guerrilla war while most of the world was maligning them for endangering the human shields who had been placed there by Hamas. While our soldiers tried to limit the number of civilian casualties at the risk of their own lives, anti-Israel, more accurately anti-Semitic, demonstrations erupted all over the world in an upside-down protest against what is truly the most ethical and humanitarian army in the world. It became clear that we had to stand together with our fellow Jews as we stood alone as a People pouring out our hearts in prayer. Just as the Gaza War ended, we faced another tragic circumstance that galvanized the Jewish world when Aharon Sofer, a”h, another one of our children, disappeared. For an entire week, we combed the Jerusalem Forest and surroundings where he was last seen alive. Again, we shook the Heavens with our tefillahs. When his body was found, we mourned this tragic loss and realized again, as we had realized after every Jewish casualty, that everything comes from Hashem, whether it’s a terrorist attack or an accidental death. As the avalanche of tefillahs testifies, this summer has not been “business as usual,” and we never blissfully returned to our summer vacation. It’s also not “business as usual” for jihadists, from Hamas to ISIS, who have seriously stepped up their murderous agenda. This Elul, as the world totters between good and evil, our tefillahs as members of the Am Kodesh are more precious than ever.

I think there is reason to reserve judgment on the veracity of the story, but The Almighty performs miracles for us every day. The remarkably low casualty figures and low incidents of damage to property following the launch of thousands of enemy rockets is, to my mind, a miracle.

“Dear Readers” of Issue 184. For about seven years (2006-2013), I worked as a chief editor of GDI – Global Defense Information Database at Teldan Information Systems, Ramat Gan. We dealt with articles appearing in journals about defense and aerospace. I am far from an expert in the field, but I have a good idea of what I don’t know and when I need to ask an expert for explanations. I consulted an expert about the operation of the Iron Dome. He told me that the operation of the Iron Dome does not involve a second launch if the first launch misses the target. There simply isn’t enough time. Kal ve-chomer, there isn’t time for a third launch if the second misses. (Sometimes, two Iron Dome missiles are launched simultaneously, with the second self-destructing if the first is on target.) The Almighty performs miracles for us every day. The remarkably low casualty figures and low incidents of damage to property following the launch of thousands of enemy rockets is, to my mind, a miracle. In the case that you cite, it seems to me that we cannot say with certainty what took place. But in view of the discrepancies in the versions of the story, as well as the information about the operation of the Iron Dome battery that I was able to obtain, I think there is reason to reserve judgment on the veracity of the story, or to, at the very least, note discrepancies in the reported information.

I am writing to question the veracity of the story about the three missiles fired by the Iron Dome in your

After the vote of the United Nations for the

partition of the British Mandate territory of Palestine on the 16th of Kislev 5708, the 29th of November, 1947, the Brisker Rov, Rav Velvel (Yitzchok Zev) Soloveitchik, maintained that the U.N. decision had been a missed opportunity. This was after the devastating Holocaust. Now Hashem was giving the remnant of his nation a “smile of Heavenly Providence.” The time was favorable and if the Nation would have beseeched in torrents of tears for the end of the Exile, Mashiach would have come. Following the wondrous Six Day War, the Ponevezher Rov, Rav Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman, wrote that the Six Day War was a great and awesome time and one should be embarrassed to remain complacent during this incredible period when even a blind person could sense the palpable miracles. “Dear and precious Jews, what is the meaning of the awesome and wonderful miracles? What are they showing us and hinting to us from Heaven? … Ma’i mashma lan? .., only that this is a preparation for the Geulah…” We have passed through a difficult summer. However, the apparent miracles are all around us. Hashem’s protection of the Jews in Eretz Hakodesh is so crystal clear. Maybe we try should take to heart the message of both the Brisker Rov and Ponevezher Rov. Is it not time go towards the Complete Redemption and cry out for the end of the exile? We need to strengthen ourselves in Torah. May we be given the complete Geulah, still this year. -Vardah Littman

Shoplifting Exposed

T

his week, let’s talk about a (gasp!) topic that no self-respecting human being should ever know about: the art of shoplifting without getting caught.

Rabbi Issamar Ginzberg Monetized Intellect Consulting The Ba’al Eitza and Acclaimed Marketing Expert 718 971-5220 issamar@issamar.com www.issamar.com

1. The Milkshake Secret. A fellow goes into a jewelry store and tries on all kinds of rings, bracelets, necklaces, and watches. After browsing, he thanks the proprietor and leaves the store. If the proprietor then notices something missing and calls security or the police, chances are they’ll never find anything on this clever fellow, which gives him the chance to sue for false arrest. Where are the goods? I’m glad you asked. He dropped the diamond ring into his milkshake, where it can be retrieved later… unless he gets too thirsty and drinks the milkshake too close to the bottom of the cup. 2. Some stores only have the store exits beeping when the item being shoplifted is above a certain dollar amount. Other stores don’t do anything about shoplifting because the expenses of dealing with it and the security team it requires is expensive, and it also places employees at risk if the shoplifter has a weapon. Shoplifters know the internal regulations of most major chain stores and “practice their craft” accordingly. 3. The Bag Swap. A fellow goes down the aisles and drops into a new bag the goods that he would like to “possess.” He does this fast and often enough to attract security on purpose. And then on the way out of the store, he switches his bag with another bag looking exactly the same from an accomplice. The

accomplice leaves with the goods, and our fellow gets stopped at the exit… except his bag is totally empty of any items from this store. (Again, this usually results in the store giving a gift card to the shoplifter as an apology for accusing him of theft.) 4. Re-receipting. Ever buy something in a store—and leave the receipt on the counter? Or perhaps in the shopping cart near your parked car when you loadd it? Some thieves will take those receipts and go back into the store, pick up the same items you bought, along with some other small item, then go to pay for the small item, and show the cashier that they have already paid for the rest of the stuff and had just “forgotten something small.” In another version of this, the thief will simply pick up the item you bought and go straight to returns to get cash for the item they are “returning.” 5. Some enterprising thieves will go into a store with pre-printed bar codes for items that they know are low priced, and (sometimes with the help of a cashier who will get a cut) buy expensive items after covering the existing properly priced bar code with a low priced one. Now wait a minute. Am I trying to teach you how to go on a shoplifting spree? I’m so glad you asked. The answer is no. The truth is that many readers of my columns own retail stores and are affected by losses from shoplifting. The very same information that is “bad” when looked at as “A Guide to Shoplifting” is very, continued on page 26

Being a Bracha

by B.C. Laufer, CPLC

Recently, at the S h a b b o s shiur I gave on the importance of being a bracha to oneself before being a bracha to others, a woman asked if focusing on being a bracha to herself wouldn’t turn her into a selfish person. I understood where she was coming from. In the past, when trying to grasp the intricacies of inter-personal relationship skills, I've been told that there is a difference between being assertive and being aggressive. The fine line between being assertive and being aggressive was too hazy for this information to work for me. But being a bracha to oneself, according to the explanation of Rabbi Shamshon Rephael Hirsch, is not like that at all. It is a whole different experience. To understand this better, let's use Rav Hirsch's interpretation of the word “bracha. Saying a bracha, according to him, means committing oneself to the flourishing and advancement of ratzon HaShem as delineated in our Torah. Being a bracha to oneself, then, would mean advancing and expanding

10

THE ENGLISH UPDATE

ratzon HaShem towards ourselves. M. M., a woman at the shiur suggested that this can be compared to the beautiful kos shel bracha pyramid, where the original full-sized cup of blessed wine is on the top and only when it overflows do the little cups arranged underneath it receive wine from the kos shel bracha. An empty cup, or even a full cup which isn't overflowing, with the best of intentions, can't fill other cups with wine. So too, a person who is not a bracha to themselves, first, can't be a bracha to others. Also, being a bracha to oneself is based on doing ratzon HaShem to ourselves, while selfishness is based on gratifying our desires. Many times just being a bracha towards ourselves automatically turns us into being a bracha to others. For example: Being a bracha to ourselves in a disagreement with someone else keeps us focused on the issue at hand in a respectful way to the benefit of both parties, as opposed to the need to protect our ego by proving that we are right, and making witty rejoinders, which only result in bad feelings of one to the other, to the detriment of both. Or, for the extra sensitive person, it would mean focusing on being a bracha to themselves, and not just focusing on the other person's agenda. One of the women at the Shabbos shiur related that she had an upsetting incident, where, without going into details, she kept on repeating to herself that she needed to be a bracha

to herself. She realized that in the past she would have buried the issue because it was so overwhelming and she was wary of getting embroiled with hard feelings and the resulting fallout. Now, however, she was determined to deal with it in a way that would bring a bracha to herself. Telling herself over and over again, "I need to be a bracha to myself," strengthened her resolve to approach the person about the issue. To her great relief, the issue got resolved respectfully without any hard feelings. She had accomplished something, which in the past had been impossible for her, only because she was determined to be a bracha to herself. Another woman at the shiur said that while she always considered herself a giving person, and mostly thought only about being there for others, focusing on their needs and wants, she realized one day, that she wasn't actually living her own life. It made her wonder, If I'm living for everybody else, who is going to live for me? Im ain ani li, mi li? When she started integrating being a bracha to herself, she was delighted to discover that not only didn't she turn into a self-centered person, but she actually developed an even greater capacity for being generous. Becoming a bracha to ourselves can only happen if we have clarity about what ratzon HaShem is in all circumstances. But, being a bracha to ourselves first can never make us selfish. B. C. Laufer, CPLC offers both private coaching and sessions over the phone. She can be reached at 02-537- 6732.

Natural Health

WHY WOULD OUR BODIES PRODUCE SOMETHING THAT COULD KILL US?

A number of years ago, a friend of mine was diagnosed with high cholesterol. She was told that her liver was malfunctioning. Her doctor advised her to avoid foods with lots of cholesterol (meat, dairy, eggs, etc.). But of course that wouldn’t help her, because they then claimed that her body was producing too much cholesterol. It had nothing to do with how much she was eating, because her foolish liver just kept on pumping out those stubborn lipoproteins. Yael Tusk, MS, OM is a U.S. board certified practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She resides in Jerusalem, where she treats both adults and children, and gives classes on hypnosis for childbirth. She can be reached at: 02-581-7415, or 052-768-4438

Billions of Defective People? Of course she was also prescribed Lipitor (a statin drug that blocks cholesterol production). My friend is one of several million who has received this diagnosis. According to the ever decreasing threshold for healthy cholesterol levels, over 90% of aging adults may be prescribed statins (there must have been a major defect in the “baby boomers” manufacturing process).

Lipitor and Memory Loss Very soon after starting on Lipitor, my friend’s memory started failing her. She heard from friends that this might be a side effect of the Lipitor, so she did the responsible thing and asked her doctor. He told her that he had never heard of a connection between statins and memory loss (so it must not exist). Trusting her doctor’s knowledge of the risks of a drug that he was prescribing, she continued to take her medication loyally for many more years. All the while her memory has continued to deteriorate. In case you were wondering, my friend was sharp as a tack (a nice friendly sort of tack) before she started taking the meds. She also wasn’t all that old. In any case, she really struck me as the type who would stay lucid into her 90’s.

Heart Disease in Chicks?

12

Here’s a thought. Chicks must be born with terrible heart disease, no? I mean they are incubating in pure cholesterol after all! Well there’s an explanation for why they are not. The “Cholesterol People” explain that they now realize that there are two types of cholesterol: HDL and LDL (high and low density lipoprotein). LDL has been labeled “bad,” and HDL is the “good” cholesterol. Chicks aren’t born nearly dead from cholesterol toxicity, because they are nourished with lots of the “good” cholesterol before they hatch. So everybody can start eating eggs again! Eggs are not going to kill you after all. Unless you have high cholesterol,

THE ENGLISH UPDATE

then they might advise you to avoid eggs anyway. Did you sense it folks? There is something very strange going on here.

HDL is not cholesterol Now let me tell you something really weird: HDL and LDL are not cholesterol. You can think of them as little vehicles that carry cholesterol and fat through the blood stream. The only difference between these carriers is their size and the concentration of the nutrients within them. You heard me correctly; cholesterol is a nutrient. It is an essential component of all cellular function, particularly, the brain. There is only one type of cholesterol. However, according to the medical powers, when cholesterol is transported by LDLs it’s bad for you. But when you put the same substance in a smaller package (HDL) it is now very good for you.

What does the world look like when your eyes are closed? My friend’s doctor was correct that he was not aware of a connection between Lipitor and memory loss. If you don’t research something, you are very likely not going to come across the damning evidence. This technique is used a lot in “evidence-based medicine” today. It’s the good old, “If I don’t know about it, it must not exist.” Does that mean the connection is not there? In fact, it does not take much effort to unearth the abundant evidence connecting Lipitor with memory loss. There is even a clear pathological mechanism that explains why this happens. First of all, our livers are not producing cholesterol by accident; cholesterol is needed for all cellular functions. A whopping 25% of your body’s cholesterol is found in the brain, keeping neurons connected and helping the brain function. Drastically reduce your body’s cholesterol supply, and your brain will be the first to suffer. This is a vast oversimplification, but you get the idea.

But Isn’t Cholesterol Causing Heart Disease? Turns out that there is ample evidence that cholesterol does not cause heart disease. In fact, blocking our liver’s ability to produce cholesterol (the mechanism of statin drugs, such as Lipitor) can have dire health consequences. This leaves us with another important question: What is the real cause of heart disease? More next week…

I planned to write about Hamalach, B'sheim Hashem Elokei Yisrael. KUPAT CHOLIM MEUCHEDET MEETING THE COMMUNITY’S NEEDS: RAMAT ESHKOL CLINIC – NEWLY UPGRADED AND EXPANDED More English speaking specialists in all areas of medicine * Urgent Shabbat & nighttime service * Pharmacy open 15 hours straight Sundays – Thursdays * Preventative medicine and healthy life-style coaching “At Meuchedet, we really feel at home,” is how two young American women opened their conversation with R’ Yehuda Levi, Meuchedet’s Jerusalem regional director, who was making his first visit to the Ramat Eshkol clinic. “During our klita process, as olot chadashot, we registered with Meuchedet. The warm, welcoming feeling we received made us feel that we had come to the right place, Baruch Hashem,” the women continued enthusiastically. “As young people living in Israel without extended family, Meuchedet’s concern and willingness to answer any questions we may have provides us with a sense of security.” “Meuchedet prides itself in giving the feeling of being at home, part of a family, where people really care and are willing to go beyond the call of duty for a member,” says Yehuda Levi, director of Meuchedet’s central Jerusalem region which includes the clinic on Paran Street. “All Meuchedet staff members in general, and those in the Paran clinic, in particular, know every one of our members personally. They are aware of each member’s specific needs and are willing to help him at any given time.”

RAMAT ESHKOL CLINIC – REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER “At the Ramat Eshkol clinic,” relates Meuchedet’s Jerusalem marketing director Moshe Brim, a well-known personality in the frum world, “a new chapter in Meuchedet’s services is beginning this week. It’s a chapter whose title is “Meuchedet Meets the Community’s Needs.” Over the past

Important Rabbonim & medical professionals at Tahara U'Refuah gathering in Sanhedria few years, the Ramat Eshkol area has become a center for Torah-observant families. Many of them are olim from English-speaking countries who have chosen to make this neighborhood their home. Some are in kollel at the Mir or other places. “It is important to note the special relationship between Kupat Cholim Meuchedet’s administration and the Mirrer Rosh Yeshiva, ztz”l and the present Rosh Yeshiva shlit”a. This relationship has promoted hassle-free accessibility to quality health insurance for thousands of yeshiva leit from the United States and Europe who come to learn in the Mir,” added Brim. The administration of the Jerusalem region, upon the instruction of director Shaul Tal and marketing director R’ Moshe Brim, made a strategic decision to upgrade the Ramat Eshkol clinic to a regional medical center and to provide services which would meet the specific needs of the growing local population, many of whom are already Meuchedet members. After identifying these needs,

Meuchedet decided how to best expand their health and medical services at the Paran Street clinic. The Meuchedet clinic in Ramat Eshkol now offers a wide range of health and medical services that best meet the needs of neighborhood residents. The clinic is equipped with the most updated equipment. A special effort was made to put together a professional staff of experienced English-speaking physicians who are highly aware of the specific needs of the community.

NEWS AT THE PARAN STREET CLINIC IN RAMAT ESHKOL Three important changes effective this week for the benefit of neighborhood residents: longer pharmacy hours nighttime service Shabbat emergency clinic As well as gynecological sonogram (ultrasound) service in the coming weeks The Meuchedet pharmacy at the

Paran Street clinic will now be open from 8 am until 11 pm for members’ convenience. Beginning Sunday 6 Elul / August 31, the nighttime clinic will be open to members from 7 until 11 pm. A staff of doctors, including many who work at major Jerusalem and Israeli medical centers, will be available to Meuchedet members. Starting Shabbat Parshat Shoftim, a Shabbat clinic, operated by non-Jews will serve members from an hour before Shabbat starts until 11 pm on Friday night and from 10 am on Shabbat morning until Shabbat is over. In the coming weeks, one of the leading experts in the field of gynecology in Jerusalem will begin performing gynecological sonograms (ultrasound examinations) using completely new and very sophisticated equipment. Stay posted for more information.

NEW DOCTORS AND SERVICES “During the next few weeks, new doctors, specialists in their fields and suited to this specific population, will be joining the clinic’s medical staff,” relates R’ Yehuda Levi, regional director, who does not divulge full details at present, but does mention that among the new doctors will be leading specialists in their fields. In addition to the advanced medical care provided by the clinic, there will be programs promoting good health and healthy life-style habits, some under the joint auspices of the local matnas. There are plans for pro-active workshops for men and women (separately). Topics will include physical activity, healthful nutrition, preventative medicine and more.

IN MEMORY OF AHARON SOFER, A”H

When The King is in the Field It's Elul and The King is in the field. This month Hashem is likened to a king who has left his palace and come to the field, to where the common people are. It's so much easier for us now to open our hearts to Him, beg for forgiveness, and beg for blessing. I go out to my porch which faces the Judean Hills and the Jerusalem Forest, to take advantage of this incredible opportunity to feel the closeness and speak so directly to Hashem, The King. I look out into the “field,” the stretches of grass, trees, hills, and mountains for miles in the distance. Suddenly, I see black and white, black and white, black and white. The bottom is black, the top is white. There are many like this in the distance, in the field before my eyes. If they weren't moving, because of the distance between us, I wouldn't realize that they're people. But as they move, I see that indeed, those black and white figures are people, I estimate maybe about 15 or 20. I know better than to count people, because each is a holy neshama, not an object to be counted. As I watch them from my porch, I

realize that I am seeing what I've been reading about for almost a week. They are searching for Aharon ben Chulda, the yeshiva student from America who went for a hike with his friend last Friday in the Jerusalem Forest and somehow became separated from his friend. He hasn't been seen or heard from since.

The Search Last Shabbos, barely one day after he went missing, helicopters circled the area here for hours and hours. And during the day, on Shabbos, here in this religious neighborhood, we suddenly heard a loudspeaker announcing that a 23 year old boy with a short red beard, black pants, white shirt, and a black yarmulke is missing-- “If anyone has information . . .” I didn't hear the rest except that at the end, I heard “Shabbat Shalom.” And we knew that this was something very serious if frum Yidden would go around in an ambulance making this announcement on Shabbos. As soon as they realized he was missing, the search began -- by foot, by helicopter, with police, soldiers, cars, dogs, and whatever might help find the missing boy. On

Rosh Chodesh Elul, thousands and thousands of yeshiva boys went back to their yeshivas, to their intense Torah studies after a short break between Tisha B'Av and Elul. Then the great Torah authority, HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman, shlita, announced that the yeshiva boys should leave the beis medresh and go out to help search for Aharon ben Chulda. On the news, volunteers were told where to meet, and from there, they were sent out to various locations to search. We've been hearing this for days. I see the searching figures clad in black and white, the standard dress of yeshiva students. They aren't in yeshiva, they are doing their best to help save a life. And seeing them I cried anew, begging Hashem to give them success, to somehow, in any way, save Aharon ben Chulda.

When Our Youth Go Off the Path Many, many people have been saying how strange this whole thing is. He just disappeared, with no trace, no hint of anything. He went for a walk, a hike with a friend and seemingly lost his way. In Hebrew, he went off the derech, meaning off the

Helping Them Find Their Way Back

trail that would bring him to his destination. It occurs to me that that's the same word used to describe our precious youth who for various reasons have sadly left the world of Torah and mitzvahs. In English we say, “They're off the derech,” meaning off the right path, and even when we speak in English, we use the Hebrew word, derech. And in Hebrew, too, it's basically the same expression for these youth – they've left the derech, the right way, the Torah way. Aharon Sofer's circumstances are so unusual and so inexplicable, so unfathomable that we can only assume that he somehow lost his way and wandered or fell or . . . we don't know. Because the circumstances are so unusual, someone said: “Maybe Hashem is trying to tell us something. We are so concerned and doing so much, our absolute utmost in physical searches and spirituals efforts -prayers, Tehillim, resolutions. Maybe Hashem is hinting to us that just as we do so much for a fine, frum Jewish boy who left the right physical derech and is so far lost to us, so, too, we should be doing everything in our ability to help our youth who have gone off the spiritual derech. Perhaps Hashem is telling us that we should do something, that we should go out of our way to do our utmost to help return those Jewish neshamas to the right derech, as well as those who never knew it, the tinokos she'nishbu, the “kidnapped babies.”

Kiruv can be done in so many ways. It can be in conversation, on a bus, in formal classes, on the phone via a special kiruv organization that arranges telephone chavrusas, or at a Shabbos table. For those who say they don't know how or they're shy, at least they can say hello or smile to someone who they know used to be religious and isn't now, or someone who never was. And if not that, we can contribute to a kiruv organization when there are so many now. We can all find a way to help a Jewish neshama find and come back to the right derech, whether he's been there before or never been there. Each of us, if we really want to, can do something for those who are lost, who are off the derech. As with Aharon ben Chulda, there were those who tried to bring him back through physical efforts, searching, and they, as well as all of us, were also davening for him. The same applies to helping those who are off the spiritual derech. Those of us who aren’t suited to do active kiruv can daven. We can beg Hashem to have mercy on these holy neshamas who have gone astray, and bring them back to their immediate family and to their larger family, Am Yisrael. I hear the news. It’s sad, terribly sad. Aharon Sofer, a"h, is no longer alive. It's a shock for all of us who have been hoping and davening that he would be found alive and well. May Aharon ben Moshe Tvi be a mailitz yosher for his family and for all Am Yisrael. In these last weeks and days before the Day of Judgment, may he be a mailitz yosher that we all return to the right path and merit a good, healthy, safe new year. And as we work on getting ourselves back on the derech, let's each take it upon ourselves to also help our fellow Jews who need help, including those who have wandered off the derech, and those tinokot she'nishbu, the “kidnapped babies,” who never knew which path to take. And let us do it with the same concern, love, and intensity that we had as we searched for Aharon Sofer, a”h. May all our efforts be a zechus for an iluiy neshama for Aharon ben Moshe Tzvi, a”h.

He just disappeared, with no trace, no hint of anything. He went for a walk, a hike with a friend and seemingly lost his way.

WINGS AND THE COSMIC COMIC CONSPIRACY

Wings (chicken wings, that is), have become a family favorite over the years. Tasty, versatile, and economical, they present well on a plate and just two or three make for a respectable and satisfying portion. There may well be a way to tell which wings in a given package are right wings and which are lefts, but I have yet to discover it. What’s far easier to discern is what qualifies as politically left or right wing—or so I thought until recently. Certainly here in Israel it seems to revolve mostly around issues of security vis-à-vis the Arabs. Although once they get into power, the so-called right wing politician and his left wing counterparts tend to behave essentially the same, the only difference being that which one does with a smile on his face, the other does with a frown. In America, where there exists (at least the illusion of) more existential breathing room, the two “wings” tend to spread out more and take on a broader ideological spectrum. Simply put, if I had to pigeonhole (pun somewhat intended), I’d say that the right wing emphasizes values—or, what should be, while the left wing stresses vision—or, what could be. Now, we Jews are smart enough to know that a bird needs two healthy wings to fly, and the Torah is, in my opinion, unique in that it presents a way of life with both vision and values in abundance. The two are not competing, but are complementary, avoiding the inevitable imbalance of a

secular approach, be it right leaning, or left. But even this cursory distinction between the two wings shrinks when we step back and focus on how the non-Jewish socio-political left and right wings actually (perhaps unintentionally) conspire to mislead people and prevent them from approaching and appreciating the truth of the Torah. This is an extensive topic and I hope to be able to explore it in its proper depth in a future article, but you’re all waiting for the wings recipes anyhow, so I’ll try to be brief. To illustrate, think of the classical comedy teams (Laurel and Hardy, Abbot and Costello, etc). Generally these consist of a “straight man” and a “fool.” The straight man’s job is to serve as a set-up for the fool to bounce off of. This is often accomplished by the straight man portraying a caricature of accepted mores and values, emphasizing their weak points and hypocrisies, which the fool wryly pounces upon, spoofs, or otherwise picks apart, rendering the previously respectable straight man foolish, and himself winkingly wise. (Groucho Marx and Margaret Dumont are a textbook example). On the surface, the straight man and the fool seem to be at odds, antagonistic toward each other, but in fact, the two are in cahoots, reading out of the same script. They are both in fact leitzim (mockers), simply pulling off their leitzonus in different ways.

So how did we get from food, to politics, to comedy—you might well be asking? Let me explain. The Torah presents a pure, clear, G-d given morality (or set of values, as we like to call it today). The political left (beginning from the so-called Enlightenment) has been at war against these values and the curtailment of pure yetzer hara fulfillment they mandate. But to mock and attack the truth directly would yield them little, so they teamed up with a straight man—the non-Jewish religious right. These latter present (or misrepresent) Torah-originated values and outlooks, distorting them based on their ancestors’ millenniaold distortions. These simplistic distortions, coupled with the blatant hypocrisy of many of their high-profile practitioners, serve to create a perfect foil for the left-wing fools to mock. “See, there are your traditional values and religion!...How ridiculous!...(and it is, as the rightwing straight man/leitz presents it)… So chuck it all and be free!” This Cosmic Comic Conspiracy really is a very slick and professional comedy team. Only its results are a far from laughing matter, as it poisons and prejudices people’s minds and has practically closed the door to any of our attempts to fulfill our mission of relating the message that a life of true moral, G-d given values, far from being silly, is sublime. As I said, all of these points deserve elaboration, so for now take them all with a grain of salt, and let’s cook. turn the page for the chicken wings recipes

SHAKE AND BAKE SPICY “FRIED” WINGS The floury shake- and- bake coating uplift the wings’ natural oiliness into a light, crunchy bite.

Ingredients: • • • • • •

2 kilo (approx 4.5 lbs.) chicken wings 3 cups flour (white or whole wheat), potato, or corn starch, or any combo you choose 2 Tbsp dried oregano 2 Tbsp garlic powder 1 Tbsp paprika (sweet or hot, according to your taste) 1 tsp salt

Directions: 1 Preheat oven to 200°C. Rinse and drain the wings (they should remain slightly moist, as to better hold the coating). 2 Place wings in a large plastic bag (50x70 cm. is ideal.) It should be a heavy duty bag, if not, double up, unless you want to risk the adventure of having the wings take an early flight across the kitchen floor. Add all ingredients to the bag, except for the flour(s). 3 Holding the bag tightly closed, shake the wing and spice mixture well to evenly coat. 4 Add the flour(s),and shake well again. Peek inside the bag, if the wings are floury and separated, great. If they’re sticky and clumped together, add another cup of flour and shake again, etc. 5 Arrange the coated wings on baking paper lined oven pans or trays, leaving at least minimal air space between them. 6 Bake until crispy, sizzling and the wing sections move easily in their joints (about 30-45 min.). 7 Let cool slightly, to harden the crust.

GREAT, GRAPE-Y WINGS Easy and elegant.

Ingredients: • • • • • •

I kilo chicken wings 3 cups red or purple grape juice 1 cup seedless grapes, cut in half 2 tsp onion powder 1 tsp salt 1 tsp sweet paprika

Directions: 1 Place wings in a skillet (with a tight cover) just large enough to hold them without doubling up. 2 Add remaining ingredients (except for halved grapes). 3 Cook, covered on medium heat until the wings are tender, (sections move easily in their joints), approximately 30 minutes. At this point, it should look light a soupy, reddish-brown broth. 4 Now the tricky (i.e. fun) part. Add the grapes, partially uncover the pan, and raise the heat. Your goal is to reduce the liquid to a thick (think apple juice concentrate) syrup. 5 Once this consistency is reached, turn off the heat. 6 Now you have a choice. Either take the safer road, and loosen the wings from the bottom of the pan with a spatula (taking care not to break them), arrange them on a platter, and spoon the sauce (which is now mostly on the bottom of the pan) over them. Very practical. 7 Or you can do what I do. Replace the cover tightly, grab the whole thing (pan and cover together) with a towel or two, and with a quick hand motion, flip it upside-down, and then immediately right it. This should give the wings a marvelous, even glaze, but it might just make a mess. Your choice.

fter a few months of calm, when the villagers had become used to see Germans only few and far between, everything changed abruptly. Jo was coming back from the grocery store, his arms loaded with fresh supplies, when he spotted Scheuerlappen's topless limousine at the opposite end of the street, preceded by two S.S. on motorcycle, and followed by tarpaulin covered military trucks. His body reacted instinctively, faster than his brain. He instantly dropped half his groceries and ran back to the barn, using only side streets. Once there, he hid Ruchamah and the children under stacks of hay, enjoining them to remain quiet. He himself remained behind the bolted door, listening with his ear glued to the wooden panel. He had barely had time to recover his breath, when he started to hear the distant sound of crackling gunfire. Frightened, he prayed in silence. Suddenly, there was loud and repeated banging on the barn's heavy door. Jo ran to hide behind the hay. After a short pause, the banging started again, but much louder than before. Then, Jo heard a voice pleading: "Mister Terol, I know you are in there, please open the door, for heaven's sake…hurry up!" Jo understood that these were no threats, just cries of despair of someone in distress. Without further hesitation, he opened the door…Hell!...it was Doctor Sigognac! His face was distorted with fear. He pushed the door vigorously and tumbled down to the ground, at Jo's feet. The latter turned him over and saw that his face was covered in blood. Jo was puzzled. He locked back the door and bent over Sigognac. "What did you come here for?" Jo asked "what happened to you?" "The Germans arrested me and hit me with the butt of their rifles," Gontran explained. “It is a miracle that I managed to escape at all. They nearly killed me!" He wiped off a trickle of blood oozing from his lips and added: "I beg of you, Mister Terol, have mercy on a fellow Jew. Please, let me stay here and I'll explain everything." Jo told him to keep quiet and began to take care of his wounds. The wounds looked bad because of all the blood, but they weren’t serious. After Jo had bandaged him with improvised dressings torn from a white shirt, the doctor started to feel better. Satisfied he had done a good job under the circumstances, Jo asked: "Are you sure you haven't been followed?" "Positive,” Sigognac retorted. “You have nothing to fear. I fled while my captors were being distracted by the unexpected explosion of a gas tank. When they realized I had run off, I was already too far for them to catch up to me." After a few seconds of hesitation, the doctor added, with what was meant to be a smile: "Scheuerlappen must be in a rage!" "You mean, your friend Waldemar Scheuerlappen?" Jo asked. "My friend, that abominable drunkard," exclaimed the doctor.

To better hide my Jewish identity, I pretended to be a fervent anti-Semite, g e t t i n g e v e n a c q u a i n t e d w i t h t h at n i n c o m p o o p S c h e u e r la p p e n . "Come on,” Jo encouraged him. “Tell me everything, Mister Sigognac." "Sigognac, Shmigognac!" cried the doctor. “You have not yet comprehended that I am a Jew just like you? My true name is Henri Birnbaum, and I am a doctor, like you are a bishop! I do have four years of medical studies under my belt, which I did at the Paris Faculte de Medecine, but unfortunately the war and the French anti-Semitic decrees brought an early end to my studies, ruining my hopes of ever becoming a doctor. I have just enough knowledge to fool those village idiots, by prescribing them aspirin and antibiotics, no matter what their ailments are." "I know plenty of doctors who don't know more than that," Jo assured him. Forgetting his pain, Birnbaum laughed. Jo looked at him, and realized suddenly that the blonde doctor’s hair had become chestnut brown. "What happened to your hair,” he inquired. “I remember you…" "Blonde, indeed,” Henri laughed again. “Sigognac's wig remained in the hands of the S.S." Then he added, with a worried look on his face: "I hope they'll take good care of it, these things are expensive." "Is there a real Sigognac?" Jo enquired. "There sure is," Birnbaum continued. "When the Germans invaded France, I was in the middle of my medical studies in Paris. Having no one to turn to for help, my parents being in Belgium – I don't even know if they're still alive – I went to Dr. Sigognac, who was my teacher, asking him to register me as a nurse at his hospital, so that I could remain in Paris without being bothered by the Germans for a few more weeks at least. “The skunk not only refused, but he was not ashamed to tell me that it was his duty, as a good citizen, to report me as a Jew. I think the old goose even approved of the deportation of Jews. An argument ensued, I got angry and…well, to make a short story even shorter, a few minutes later, I came out of the doctor's office wearing a flamboyant toupee and carrying a state of the art medical instruments case."

Henri kept quiet for a few moments, to catch his breath, but Jo encouraged him to continue. "Well,” Henri started again, “after weeks of aimlessly roaming around, I finally came to this picturesque mountain village. I thought I would be able to hide here and live a quiet life until the war is over. To better hide my Jewish identity, I pretended to be a fervent antiSemite, getting even acquainted with that nincompoop Scheuerlappen. All went well until this afternoon. I don't know what happened. Maybe someone found whatever was left of the real Sigognac? Anyway, Scheuerlappen came in red with anger. He first only wanted me, then he got mad at the whole village. His troops ransacked the whole place!" It is funny, Jo thought, how only a quarter of an hour ago, I feared and detested this man more than anybody else. Now I pity, and even like him. This is why our Sages said: “Do not judge a man until you are standing in his shoes.” At the first light of dawn, the Germans left, and calm returned to the smoldering village. Along the whole valley, Leforestier's farm was the only property to have remained unharmed. Jo remembered the verse in Genesis: "The L-rd blessed the house of the Egyptian because of Joseph." Henri Birnbaum was nowhere to be seen. Jo thought: He must have used the cover of darkness to escape. Would there soon be a new doctor somewhere in the mountains? That guy has guts! Later in the day, Leforestier told Jo, after having apologized a million times, that as much as he liked him (or his money), he could not put his farm in jeopardy and Jo would have to leave, the sooner the better. "This time, we were lucky,” Marcel Leforestier said. “But who knows what will be next time?" Jo did not argue. As a matter of fact, he himself thought it safer to push still higher into the mountains, where the Germans would be less likely to venture, out of fear for partisans. There goes the wandering Jew again!

continued from page 8 very helpful for store owners to avoid what is called “shrinkage,” an industry term for theft when they buy 100 of a certain product, have sold 90, and have two left in stock. (The other eight are the shrinkage.) Supermarkets and stores of all kinds (which we have discussed in past columns) are laid out in a very specific way to generate maximum purchase per square meter. This goes for isle width, why the milk is in the back and why fruits and vegetables are in the front where the colors, smell, and texture heighten your senses so that when you pass the (smelly and dingy) pet food section a few isles later, you still feel that “this store is well lit and a pleasure to visit.” But another hidden reason why fruits and vegetables are places in the front of the store is that if someone wants to come in, steal some goods, and dash away, the items closest to the door that one could grab and run away without being caught would be some low-priced vegetables and not high value items, which are kept more carefully in places that require “a harder exit” for shoplifters. “Mi shetarach b’erev Shabbos yochal b'Shabbos” means that it’s worthwhile to think more strategically about your

business instead of just “winging it” the way many people do. Why should your store have a certain layout? Why is one location better or worse than another? Why is the reception area here instead of there? Why should your ad have a certain image, size, or target audience? People spend boatloads of hard-earned money to start and grow a business, or take all kinds of training and investment to try to reach a better rung in the corporate ladder, or do more sales as a salesperson. But how much time do they invest in trying to see the view from above? And how often does their judgment lack objectivity, to the extent that they attempt the improbable? I don’t care all that much about why an architect says to place this item here and that item there. Are they thinking space-wise, or because that’s the place closest to the existing electricity? Without insight from the right people and serious thought, things can be done all wrong, which is no proper way to spend Yiddishe gelt. Sign up for the free weekly audio. High Precision Dermatology HP Dermatology (healing the skin) is a unique, non-invasive approach that successfully improves one’s aesthetic appearance without the need for surgical intervention.

Page 14

Before treatment: After treatment:

Our skin fulfills many important functions, for example: it protects the body against extreme fluctuations in temperature, prevents the permeation of various dangerous infected substances (bacteria, viruses, etc.), and prevents types of physical injury, etc. Yet, a person’s skin also has another unique function: it protects and enhances a person’s external appearance, particularly the skin of the face and the neck. When it comes to facial blemishes and defects, conventional medicine advises surgery (dermatological surgery), laser treatments and liquid nitrogen, which all work in an invasive fashion to rectify the situation. When all is said and done, most people who decide to subject themselves to such treatments, end up disappointed and injured. The reason for this is that these treatments often leave scars that look more repulsive than the original blemish.

Before treatment: After treatment:

Homeopathic doctor Dr. Ilan Zamir, established a new branch of dermatology that offers the greatest precision. High Precision Dermatology is a treatment method that facilitates the complete removal of the blemish (particularly on the face) without causing any other blemishes or scars in the process. This method is suitable for any person who seeks aesthetic treatment, is hoping for an improvement in his external appearance, and is simultaneously unwilling to take unnecessary risks and endure ineffective treatments that will ultimately not meet his expectations. Here are some photos that testify the results of treatment via HP Dermatology.
