ou may have heard of Masaru Emoto who examined the demonstrable effects of positive words and negative words on water. In a series of simple experiments, this Japanese innovator placed labels with different words on glasses that contained water, and then he froze the water and examined the water crystals with microscopic photography. The results showed that positive words like “love” and “peace” produced water crystals that were symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing, similar in design to snowflakes. The water exposed to negative words like “hatred” and ”war” produced ugly crystal formations that were distorted and amorphous. I had read about his work with great interest since it showed the connection between human consciousness, something which is hard to measure and belongs to the invisible realm, and the visibly apparent molecular structure of water. How our words can make an imprint on reality is often discussed in the Jewish tradition. In last week’s parsha, Rashi points out the connection in his discussion of the word teiva (Noah’s ark) which ensured the survival of humanity and can also be translated as “word.” But it wasn’t this Rashi from Parshas

Noach that suddenly made me recall Emoto’s experiments with water, but rather my friend’s story about her conversation with a water filter saleswoman. After describing the benefits of this water purification system for the home, the saleswoman quoted a price that my friend couldn’t afford by a longshot.

When she realized that making the sale was out of the question, the sales lady sincerely offered her advice: “Listen, I want to help you improve your drinking water. Try filling your water bottles and labeling them with positive words, and you may just get similar results.” I don’t know what’s more mind-boggling—the connection between the concrete water and the seemingly abstract words, or this woman’s frank admission about the simple alternative to her product. The human body is composed approximately of 60% water. If our words and thoughts have such dramatic results on water crystals, then just imagine what they may be doing to our spouses, our children, our students, our employees, and everyone who comes into our world. Have a beautiful Shabbos,

VOL. 5 #189 • OCTOBER 5, 2014 I have been repeatedly unsettled by the consistent presence of evolutionary biology in medicine. Without evolution, many medical theories disintegrate.

I was fascinated by the story about the house of the dead groom which was related in Vardah Littman’s article about the landmarks on Rechov Yaffo. Where can I get further info regarding this uniquely strange and sad event. - Geoffrey Niman, recent visitor from London Vardah Littman responds: The story of the dead groom is very well known to older Yerushalmis. I heard it from tour guide Eli Linker, and you may want to speak with him for further details (054-792-1419). I was astounded by Yael Tusk’s assertion that "When we are presented with disease theories based on spontaneous error, REMEMBER THAT ATHEISM IS AT THE EPICENTER OF MODERN MEDICINE. BELIEF IN EVOLUTION invariably leads to many false conclusions about defective organisms." What does atheism or belief in evolution have to do with modern medicine? I wonder what the many sincerely and deeply religious doctors at Shaare Tzedek Hospital, as well as the atheistic doctors there (and at Hadassah Hospital) would have to say about this. Before the theory of evolution was formed, medicine believed in blood-letting, leeches and other assorted treatments and theories that have proved to be false and even dangerous. Are all atheistic doctors a sham, not fit to practice medicine? I think at the very least, your magazine should have a conventional medicine physician review what she writes each week and give his (or her) opinion. -Laura Ben-Shmuel, Jerusalem Yael Tusk responds: The basis of medical science has nothing to do with the personal beliefs of doctors. Nor do I accuse any physician of atheism. It is in modern medical theory where the evolutionary underpinnings lay. Having studied modern medicine for many years, I have been repeatedly unsettled by the consistent presence of evolutionary biology in medicine. Without evolution, many medical theories disintegrate.

This week we're inaugurating a brand new interactive column designed to assist parents in the day-to-day raising of their children. This new column will address practical issues as well as different parenting approaches. Parents, this is YOUR column where you can reach out for help, and also help others benefit from your own experiences. Please send us your questions which we'll post in the column. And we invite all our readers to submit their solutions. October 30, 2014

As barbaric as the western practices of bloodletting and leeches (which preceded modern western medicine) may seem, the theory of evolution has not improved science or society in any way. Do not be deceived into believing that evolutionary thinking has advanced humanity or made people less barbaric. On the contrary: When vaccine researchers invented the hypodermic needle around the turn of the 20th century, injections often caused an unprecedented deadly reaction (and continue to do so today). The term “anaphylaxis” (lit. against protection) was coined, since instead of protecting, the injections frequently caused deadly hypersensitivity. In his 1913 Nobel Prize lecture, immunologist and vaccine researcher, Charles Richet used evolution to justify these deaths, claiming that the injections were weeding out the weak, “Anaphylaxis is thus necessary to the species, often to the detriment of the individual. The individual may perish, but this does not matter. The species must at all times retain its organic integrity.” Individuals continue to be sacrificed for the “greater good,” in the name of “herd immunity” this very day. The belief in superior and inferior genetics and a “master race” has been used to justify mass genocide in the very recent past. “Family Planning” was originally aimed at uneducated (genetically inferior) minorities. Speaking at a 1962 conference for the Population Council, Dr. J. Robert Willson said, “Perhaps the individual patient is expendable in the general scheme of things.” A theoretically faulty BRCA gene has recently led many healthy women to have mastectomies and even hysterectomies in the prime of their life. It is evolution that is fueling the belief in these genetic defects. It is unwise to put our faith in the opinion of any human being. Doctors are no exception. Existing evidence frequently contradicts standard medical practice. But the reality is often disregarded in favor of expert opinion. Laura, I too fear that great harm can come from misinformation. This is why I research. The information in this column is the result of months or years of investigation and experience. We’d best not forfeit our own judgment, when information is available empowering us to make truly informed decisions.

Separating the Wheat from the Chaff Let me make this absolutely, positively clear in a way that leaves absolutely no room for doubt: There is pretty much nothing I can tell you that isn't available, right now, absolutely FREE, somewhere out there on the internet.

etween you and the answer you seek are several Google searches, if not just one. So why are people like you willing to pay for information?

And the answer: People don’t really pay for information when you think about it. Not at all. They pay for three key points: a) speed of information; b) adaptation of information to your particular circumstance (including your brain power, education, and your experiences in the field), and more important than ever in the information age, c) the ability to not provide misinformation, which is the enemy of the successful enterprise. The internet is so full of information, that one wonders how any business gets customers when it sells “rent a brain,” be it any kind of consulting, legal, or accountancy work. Taken a step further, yet more comically, would be to suggest that people can start doing their own heart surgery using YouTube videos for instructions. And yet, that’s not what happens. People still pay professionals for advice and guidance, and the booming market for consultancy implies that the internet is leading to more business, not less. So what is the real story here? What’s the real scoop? Let me explain. What the internet has done is create a smarter consumer. So, if someone is going for any form of advice, be it legal, medical, or strategic business guidance, what is usually happening is that the prospective client is still coming for advice, but with a difference. Instead of, as in the old days, coming with a blank piece of paper ready to write down the words of wisdom from the doctor’s mouth, they will first research the issues they have themselves, and get themselves a basic level of education as to what their options are. They then head to the meeting, giving them more bang for their dollars spent because they can more efficiently use the time they have to get further along. Instead of the attorney explaining the difference between filing in small claims court or civil court, they already have that information, so they can dive right into the meeting with “are we correct is assuming that it’s worth filing this case in civil because of the amount we hope to get as opposed to going for a bit less and having a more expedited process using the small claims courts?”

October 30, 2014

Before the internet age, the question would have been “which court should we file in?” or possibly even “a cousin told us that there are different court systems that we can file in, can you tell us what they might have meant by saying that?” So in essence, an hour with a professional has become two hours for the same amount of money, because you have eliminated the first hour of that meeting with your strategic ability to find information. The blessing becomes not such a blessing because of the sheer amount of information available. Years ago, someone would read something that appeared in The New York Times heralding a medical discovery, and they could assume that, in all probability, this was a real medical breakthrough. They would assume that the breakthrough had been tested and had only reached these pages after a quantifiable result or improvement was noticed and proven. Nowadays, we don’t believe everything we read in The New York Times. Plus, the internet is rife with people selling all kinds of snake oil; sometimes laughably claiming that the same “magic foolafoo-foofoolala chicken skin extract” cures all kind of diseases, even those that contradict each other. (Example: Imagine reading that the same magical cream can both help you grow two feet in height and shrink two feet in height. How can one cream possibly have two opposite effects?) The ability to share proven information that has been shown to work for others (social proof authority) combined with the ability to separate the wheat from the chaff is what people pay for. The internet makes the world so much flatter and enables anyone, living anywhere and from any background, to start a business and profit in so many ways. It’s the very internet that intoxicated people with the power to use it as a vehicle for wealth creation that gives them the insight that if they want to do it right, they need to speak with someone that knows what’s really working today, versus what might have worked in the past—or which might be out there and sound good in theory but never worked at all. On a separate note: In response to the many requests, I’m happy to announce I will be doing a seminar for the “opportunity seeker”those thinking of starting or have recently started a business on the internet and want to take it to the next level as fast as possible. Admission is reduced to just 400 shekels. Drop me an email if you are interested. At this rate, seats will sell fast, iy”H.

Yael Tusk, MS, OM is a U.S. board certified practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She resides in Jerusalem, where she treats both adults and children, and gives classes on hypnosis for childbirth. She can be reached at: 02-581-7415, or 052-768-4438

Outdated? Cutting Edge discoveries During my undergraduate studies at Brooklyn College, I took a course called "The Physiology of Stress and Disease" which discussed modern medicine's new theories

about the effects stress has on the body. Though the ideas were interesting, the course frustrated me because it seemed that they were grappling in the dark.

A Different Vantage Point When I first began studying Chinese Medicine, it was like learning a new language. Literally. I had to learn Chinese. Learning Chinese medical theory made it clear that it was a complete, advanced medical system. In addition, it was logical. While the terms were foreign, the concepts were universal. Treating patients during my clinical internship, I saw that Chinese medicine worked not only in theory, but in practice as well.

Antiquated Ideas? When modern medical ideas seem to disprove ancient wisdom, modern medicine invariably wins public favor. It is unclear why the public has so much faith in the latest research, since new discoveries consistently disprove previously held scientific tenets. I will illustrate this with a story. After her baby was born, a lady at a Jerusalem hospital was offered a vitamin K and Hep B shot, which she declined. The doctor tried to convince her that not following protocol would endanger her baby. She asked him, “Doctor, do you read medical journals from 10 years ago?” “Of course not!” he responded, “I only trust the latest research.” “Well doctor, in 10 years from now, what you are telling me will be 10 years old.” One of the reasons I chose to study Chinese Medicine, was that its 2,000 years of experience gives it the advantage of being beyond the experimental phase. It became clear to me that modern medicine was just scratching the surface of many long-understood medical concepts.

New York City Disease There was a diagnosis that frequently came up during my clinical training in NYC, which was loosely defined as stress. It was New York City disease. For city dwellers, stress was a virtual guarantee. To the Chinese Medicine doctor, it is implicated in many health problems.

"Soft Science"

For 100 years, cholesterol and saturated fats have been incriminated as the source of heart disease. Yet, there is no scientific evidence to back up the original hypothesis. In 1988 the U.S. surgeon general’s office decided to gather all evidence to prove the diet-heart hypothesis with finality. 11 years later the project was dropped. Word was, that the office “did not anticipate the magnitude of the additional October 30, 2014

expertise and staff resources that would be needed.” In 11 years, with the U.S. governments unlimited budget, they were unable to scrape together sufficient evidence to prove a 100 year old hypotheses? Bill Harlan, associate director of the Office of Disease Prevention at the NIH (National Institute of Health) commented, “The report was initiated with a preconceived opinion of the conclusions (that cholesterol and saturated fat cause heart disease), but the science behind those opinions was clearly not holding up.” (See also the research of Gary Taubes, “The Soft Science of Dietary Fat” published in Science.)

So what's Causing Heart Disease? There is one risk factor which has consistently been found in scientific studies. The common denominator is stress. The stress hormone cortisol, triggers blood vessel damage and even acute blood clots. Chinese medicine has known that stress is one of the major causes of heart disease for 2 millennia.

Populations under Stress Nations that experience lots of stress usually have high incidence of heart disease. In populations that were displaced (i.e., forced out of their homes, separated from family, and generally mistreated), the results were always an increase in heart disease. The Australian natives, the Aborigines, started to have lots of heart disease as a result of oppression. (1) Sadly, despite being at the cutting edge of medicine, and having low average cholesterol levels, Israel has a very high rate of heart disease. I am sure you can imagine why. If you want to reduce heart disease risk, evidence shows that: • •

• •

Eating lots of fruits and vegetables does seem to reduce heart disease incidence. Exercise has also been shown to reduce the risk of heart attack as well as many other diseases. Enjoyable exercise is also an antidote to stress. Smoking is a proven risk factor for heart disease. Stress: if there are things in your life that are causing a constant state of tension, doing something about it may save your life.

Inspiration

by Sara Yoheved Rigler

Identifying Your After six months of working for the company, it's time for your evaluation. You walk into the boardroom, where three designer-suit-clad personnel managers are sitting behind a mahogany desk. The one on the left scans your file, looks up at you accusingly, and says, "I see here that you did not report for work at 9 am one time during this entire period." The woman in the middle shakes her head and remarks, "This is a Fortune 500 Company. Instead of a jacket and tie, you report for work wearing jeans."

T

he man on the right stares at the papers in his hand and says grimly, “Our surveillance cameras show that you spend less than 10% of your working hours at your desk. The rest of the time you’re walking around the building.” The first evaluator shoots the question: “Do you have anything to say for yourself?” “Yes," you reply with confidence, "I was hired as the night watchman.” To accurately assess your performance this year, you have to know your job description. Judaism asserts that every soul comes into this world charged with a unique, positive purpose. According to the great 16th century Kabalistic master known as the Ari zt”l, no one has ever or will ever come into this world with the exact same mission as yours. The light you are meant to shine into the world is yours alone, as individual as your fingerprint, as personal as your voiceprint. Your mission can be interpersonal, such as counseling couples with troubled marriages, or scholarly, such as researching ancient Chinese culture, or an expression of your talent, such as painting landscapes or playing the violin. It can be concrete, such as establishing a home for Alzheimer’s patients, or abstract, such as manifesting in the world the Divine attribute of truth or patience. It can be on a large scale, such as inaugurating the recycling system in your city, or on October 30, 2014

Life’s Mission

a small scale, such as caring for your handicapped child with joy. You may have two, or at most, three different missions, which can be consecutive (after finishing one job you start another) or simultaneous. Yet, even if there are 500 marriage counselors in your city, your particular approach and way of helping people is unique. Not one of us can be replaced—ever.

Identifying Your Mission Imagine you are an undercover agent sent into Iran. You’ve had years of training, have two vital contacts in Tehran, and are equipped with the latest hi-tech spy gadgetry. Only one thing is lacking: You have no idea what your mission is. Many of us go through life like that: We follow the route laid out by society: going to school, finding a job, getting married, raising a family, but with no clear sense of the unique mission entrusted to us. We are pulled in many different directions, feeling compromised in what we do and guilty for what we don’t do. Identifying our mission is, according to Rabbi Aryeh Nivin, the first step in leading a life of vibrancy and joy. “When you intersect with your life’s purpose,” he explains, “you feel excitement.” Knowing your personal mission is essential preparation for each new year. (Rosh Hashanah). On Rosh Hashanah God apportions to each of us life, health, livelihood, and everything else. What is your plan for how you propose to use the life God gives you? The CEO is not going to dole out a million-dollar

budget to an employee who doesn’t have a carefully worked out proposal. We are used to praying for life, health, and livelihood as ends in themselves. In the Divine accounting, however, life, health, and livelihood are simply the tools – the hi-tech spy gadgetry – that will enable you to accomplish your mission. Rabbi Nivin offers two methods for discovering your mission: Ask yourself (and write down): What were the five or ten most pleasurable moments in my life? Ask yourself: If I inherited a billion dollars and had six hours a day of discretionary time, what would I do with the time and money? When answering the first question, eliminate the universal transcendent moments, such as witnessing the beauty of nature or listening to music. Your mission, of course, may have to do with nature or music, but on a much more individual level than the high all people feel when they see the Grand Canyon. Although your mission may require hard work or genuine sacrifice, when you are engaged in your life’s mission you experience, as Rabbi Nivin puts it, “This feels so good that I could do it all day long.” When I did the first exercise, these are the answers I came up with: When someone in my Johannesburg audience came up after I spoke and told my son, “Your mother’s words changed my life.” When someone tells me, “Your book changed my life.”

Inspiration When reading the comments to my Aish.com articles, I see, “This was exactly what I needed to read today.” When I see that the reader’s way of thinking or acting is impacted by what I wrote. When someone passing through Israel (often on the way to India) comes to talk to me about Judaism, and two or five or ten years later I find out that they stayed in Jerusalem, starting learning Torah, and are observing the mitzvot. When my children mention that they talked to God about something bothering them and I realize that their relationship with God is strong.

Secret Messages from Headquarters The common theme that emerged for me was that my mission is: “To inspire people, through writing and speaking, to move forward in their spiritual/personal development and relationship with God.” That’s what excites and energizes me. That’s why, to my friends’ amazement, when I am lecture touring, I can speak in five different cities in five days, waking up at dawn every day to make an early flight and giving a three-hour workshop twice a day, and, at 63 years old, never feel tired. Knowing my mission is like installing an energy pack in my life. Barbara Silverstein is a wife, mother, and hospice nurse. When talking to me recently about her “life’s mission,” she shrugged. Although her personal and professional lives are fraught with difficulties, she soldiers on with dedication and integrity. I asked her what she would do if she had loads of money and six hours a day of discretionary time. Barbara thought for a few minutes, then replied with passion: “I would set up a Jewish outreach center for the elderly. In my work with the terminally ill, I’m always facing men or women who are about to lose their spouse and they say to me, ‘I don’t know what I’ll do about the funeral. I don’t have a rabbi.’ They want a spiritual connection with their Jewish roots, but they’re clueless about how to do it.” The more that Barbara talked, the more fervent she became. “So that’s your mission,” I told her, “to establish a Jewish outreach center for the elderly. That’s real pioneering work. No one else has done it.” “Are you kidding?” Barbara replied. “Between my family and my work, I don’t have time for anything else.” Remembering Rabbi Nivin’s advice, I suggested: “Take a half hour twice a week, and sit down with a pen and paper, and just start brainstorming. Write down whatever

October 30, 2014

comes to your mind, what the first steps would be, and what you want it to look like in the end. And ask the Almighty for help in making it happen. He can give you whatever He deems you should have. And then see if the opportunity to take the next step emerges.” Two weeks later, Barbara phoned me, brimming with excitement. “This has really gotten my imagination going,” she effused. “Everything I’ve learned throughout my life is coming in handy with this plan. I don’t know if it’ll ever amount to anything, but just thinking about it is like an electrical charge in my whole day. My husband and kids ask me why I’m smiling so much.” The Creator has outfitted you with a unique set of aptitudes, talents, and interests perfectly suited to what you are charged with accomplishing. By following your inclinations and abilities, you may already have found your mission. Sometimes your mission is deposited in your lap, such as the birth of a special needs child. The National Tay-Sachs Association, for example, was founded by the parents of children suffering from Tay-Sachs; the parents’ daunting challenge metamorphosed into their life’s mission. If your mission is not yet clear to you, take a half hour between and reflect on, “What do I really want to do with my life?” Perhaps you work full time developing software for Microsoft, but you’ve always felt a tug to write a book about internet addiction. Perhaps your greatest pleasure is tending your vegetable garden, but you’ve always dreamed of living on an agricultural settlement. Such inner urges may be whisperings from G-d, the secret message from Headquarters disclosing your true mission.

Guilt, Respect, Validation Clarity about your mission dissipates guilt for all the worthy endeavors you’re NOT engaged in. Once you realize that you’re in this world to develop a new healing modality for autism, you won’t feel guilty that you’re not volunteering for the local soup kitchen or marching on the U.N. to protest anti-Israel discrimination. Once I identified my mission, I stopped feeling guilty that I really don’t like to cook for myriads of Shabbat guests. I also understood why I love writing for Aish. com and its spiritually upwardly mobile readers. The concept of each person having an individual life’s mission is a key to respecting other people. Otherwise,

No one has ever or will ever come into this world with the exact same mission as yours. you may feel that what’s important to you should be important to everyone. You’re an environmental activist? You may blame your sister for being oblivious to the environment without appreciating that her mission is to fight Holocaust denial. You belong to a group that feeds the homeless? You may find it reprehensible that that other group is apparently heedless to the homeless and spends all their time in pro-Israel activism on campus. Being able to say, “This is my mission and that is theirs,” is the gateway to true tolerance and respect. Knowing your individual mission validates your life and releases you from the pernicious habit of comparing yourself to others. Jonah Salk’s mark on the world may seem as deep as a crater while your taking care of your handicapped brother may seem like a fingernail impression, but from a spiritual perspective the light you are shining into the world is unique and is exactly the light you came here to radiate. One more point: Fulfilling your individual life’s mission does not exempt you from your global missions, such as supporting your family or raising your children. Starting an outreach center for the elderly may have to wait until your children are grown. Writing that book on internet addiction may have to be tucked into your few spare hours after your full-time job. Don’t worry. The God who assigned you your mission will make sure you have everything you need—including time now or later—to fulfill it. Reprinted with permission from Aish. com. A Look Back at The Tzena By Vardah Littman

Without understanding the intense poverty that was the lot of the citizens of the state of Israel in the first years after its inception, you can’t really grasp what it was like to live in that period in history. From 1949 to 1959, with Israel’s economy teetering on the brink of collapse, the country adopted a regime of tzena (austerity) where rationing and similar measures were enforced. A government ministry was set up called the Ministry of Supply and Allocation, and the amount of food and clothing that a person could buy was limited and determined by official government edicts.

The food allowance per person was only 1,600 calories per day with additional calories in extra food rations for children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with ulcers. A bevy of international experts had been consulted in order to give guidelines as to the amount a person could consume each day without starving to death.

The Austerity Diet

In the summer of 1949, for example, the daily per-meal rations consisted of 0.2 ounces of noodles, half an ounce of rice, a quarter of an ounce of coconut meat, a few pieces of toast, and a handful of oats. Every citizen had to register at his local food store, after which every family received a ration coupon book (tlushsim). Each month, each citizen would get food coupons worth six Israeli pounds. One could buy half of loaf of bread per person, per day, but only ONE egg a week per person and 0.75 grams of meat per month. The half loaf of bread was a big hit as it was satisfying (making people feel full) and gave them strength. Israeli cuisine changed entirely. The most popular cookbook of that era taught a person how to cook without ingredients. There was such a shortage of food that they created products that were “as if” (in essence “ersatz”). Take for instance the OXO cubes that had a flavor similar to chicken soup, and it was unclear what the ingredients were. One thing for sure is that these cubes

October 30, 2014

contained absolutely no chicken. Since the daily rations didn’t include fruit, a factory was set up precisely for the purpose of manufacturing compote that was reminiscent of the taste of fruit. The milk powder wasn’t milk but it resembled it; the powder gave an impression, a feeling, a sense of … milk. In short a was simulated milk. There were barely any eggs but a kind of powder that resembed eggs was concocted. The chicory coffee substitute tablets were basically make-believe coffee. The government asked the citizens to alleviate the pressure on the supply system by growing vegetables beside their homes and in window boxes.

Belt Tightening

Not only was food rationed but also by the spring of 1950, furniture, kitchenware, clothing, and footwear was added to the list. It was called LaKol (“For All,” i.e., everyman's) fashion-- very basic, very simple fashion. Because of this decree, one newspaper reported: “Israelis, who have been tightening their belts ever since the austerity program was introduced, have now found out that the belts (themselves) have been rationed.” A yearly allowance of 45 points was allocated for leather

Does Anyone Remember Baking in a Wonder Pot? The Wonder Pot gained popularity during Israel's era of national austerity in the 1950s, when most citizens did not own an oven. The concept was based on models from Germany and Eastern Europe, and was first manufactured by the Palalum company (the company name was a contraction of the words pele (wonder) and aluminium). Later the Wonder Pot was manufactured by other companies, including the Matlum company, which continues to produce them today. The Wonder Pot continued to be popular through the 1970s, especially among new immigrants who did not have ovens. During its heyday, the Wonder Pot inspired its own bestselling cookbook. A national desire to dissociate with the austerity mentality put an end to its widespread use. However, the Wonder Pot is still used for baking kugels and it is also popular on Pesach for those who do not have a Pesach oven. Today the Wonder Pot is considered a nostalgic Israeli kitchen item and is still sold in traditional housewares stores in Bnei Brak and Jerusalem. Several years ago, a housewares store calling itself Seer Pehleh (Wonder Pot) opened in the Talpiot neighborhood. goods. As new shoes were slated at 50 points a person, one usually had no choice but to repair his old shoes at the rate of seven points for soles and two points for heels. There was an annual allocation of 85 points for clothing. A new jacket, alone, required 103 points, so by the time one collected enough points for an entire suit, two years (at least) would have passed. With thousands of penniless new immigrants (Holocaust survivors and those fleeing Arab lands) flooding the nascent state each month, a great portion of the Jewish population (which had grown from 600,000 in 1947 to 713,00 in 1948 and 965,000 in 1949, then nearly doubling from 1950 until 1954) lived in maabarot, in abject poverty and suffered greatly. A tax was imposed to help families that could not afford food. The Hebrew word purposely chosen as a translation for austerity was tzena, a term used for modesty and humility. This was part of the strategy to convince the citizens of the new state that rationing was a higher ideal and not just a socialist state imposed collectivist policy.

The Flourishing Black Market

It seems people were neither convinced nor impressed. To combat the meagerness and scantiness of the menu and imposed lifestyle, ingenious Israelis soon developed an elaborate and thriving underground market where luxuries like fresh meat or a dozen eggs could be acquired for an exorbitant sum.

Whoever had a relative (a cousin or someone, anyone) living on

The Wonder Pot is effective at baking on top of the stove for three reasons: its aluminum material, its hole, and the metal disc separating it from the flame. The aluminum material allows heat to spread uniformly. The center hole of the pot focuses the flame and creates heat dispersion around the inside of the cake. The metal disc lifts the pot off the fire, reducing and focusing the flame. Baking in the Wonder Pot without the metal disc will produce a cake that is dry on the bottom and thick and wobbly in the center. The metal disc is sold in different thicknesses and diameters to accommodate different baking times and larger flames. The lid of the Wonder Pot is perforated with small holes to release steam. Baking time in a Wonder Pot varies from 40 to 50 minutes. The Wonder Pot produces high and airy cakes. In addition to baking, it can also be used to cook kugels, casseroles, pasta dishes, meat, and chicken. (Editor’s note: I’ve used it successfully to bake challahs when an oven wasn’t available.)

Feature a kibbutz was set up for life. “Children of cream,” a colloquial expression denoting the Israeli upper middle class, originated from those years. The “yalday hashamenet” were the kibbutzniks who were the only ones who had access to cream. The government retaliated to the booming business on the black market by setting up a mechanism to enforce the tzena edicts that was unimaginatively named the “Office for Fighting the Black Market” (Mateh LeMilchama BaShuk HaShahor). Hundreds of austerity inspectors were sent off to marketplaces, grocery stores, and other locations to ensure that no one was consuming more than his “fair” share. All vehicles were searched at the entrances to towns for hidden chickens and eggs. Despite the increased supervision and court summons, all attempts to suppress the shuk hashahor proved useless. The Black Market was soon declared Enemy Number One. The first three years of the tzena were the hardest. In 1952 after the (hotly debated and disputed) reparations agreement was signed with Germany, many of the restrictions were slightly lessened. By 1958, the list of rationed products was shortened to only 11 goods, and in 1959 rationing of all commodities except jam, sugar, and coffee, was eliminated altogether. Here are some eyewitness accounts to give the reader a better idea of the actual day-to-day struggle that this austerity program imposed. “Life in the new state was so hard. We needed to skimp greatly. There was no furniture to be acquired and we therefore sat on the wooden crates that had brought our possessions from chutz l’aretz. (There was) no refrigerator and no gas stove. I remember the ice trucks bringing ice for the icebox, and the neft (kerosene) trucks. I was about eight years old when I first saw an apple. An apple was divided into four - a piece for each child. The poverty was excruciating” (heard from Mrs. S. R.)

Eyewitness Accounts

“For my wedding, we received ration cards for two kilos of meat. Now try to make a wedding with two kilos of meat. When my first child was born in 1950, I was given tlushim to acquire six cloth diapers. At some point, American ration cards called ‘strips’ were added" (heard from Rebbetzin Chana Mintzer). “In 1951/52, my husband and I came as a young couple, from America to spend a year in Eretz Yisrael. At the time, there were very few Americans in the country and therefore we were given special and deferential treatment by everyone.

As we look around us today, we see how the material abundance has grown greatly since the early years of the State. Walk into any supermarket (or small makolet or yarkan) in Eretz Yisrael, and you see lush displays of colorful fruits and vegetables. You find tens of types of lebens and yogurts, and plentiful varieties of cheeses. Unending arrays of tinned goods, baked goods, chocolates, and sweets. And more and more. We can also buy as many trays of eggs as we want.

Fast-Forward to 60 Years Later

Clothing today is also relatively cheap and available in glorious colors and lovely materials. Again, we see the great kindness Hashem is showering upon us. Rav Sholom Meir Hacohen Wallach, shlita, asks why we need to be told in Megillas Esther about the opulence at the feasts of Achashveirosh – gold and silver chairs, diamonds and precious stones embedded in the floor, a different golden goblet for each new drink of costly wine. For each day of the 180 days, new types of foods. (And this is just a tiny glimpse of the great wealth and extravagance described there). Megillas Esther is Navi and all Navi is written because it is relevant for future generations. So why was all this luxury described? Rav Wallach answers: When Moshiach comes, each Jew will be richer then Achashverosh or even Korach and the Megillah is telling us how rich we will be. Of course we are not waiting

October 30, 2014

For instance, everyone had to wait in the line in order to take a bus. But being Americans and therefore considered special, we were told to go upfront and climb on first. I felt very uncomfortable about it. But people were happy to treat us this way since they wanted more Americans to come. “The scarcity of food was very great, unbelievably so. The grocery store had a very limited choice of vegetables each day. Being there was not much variety, you knew that whatever you were eating, the whole town would be eating it as well. “I saw nearly all the men carried briefcases and thought to myself, So many lawyers in the city? But after I saw a man put his half a loaf into his briefcase, I realized that this was his ‘bag.’ In those years the stores did not provide bags. “We were informed that on a certain day they were giving out cottage cheese. I arrived bright and early to make sure I got our share. My mistake was that I did not bring a little container to carry the cheese home in. How should I have known that I needed to bring a container? Where I came from, they gave you cheese in a sealed container. The grocer saw my plight and put my cheese in a piece of paper. I carried it to our apartment that way. When I reached home I found the piece of paper was a letter, and my cheese was full of ink. “People asked me how I managed. The culture was so different and the contrast was so great between America and the Israel of those years. But I guess we were young, adventurous, and very idealistic back then. Besides, I knew I was only there for a year, so I took it in stride, pretending I was on a camping trip. Moreover, it was one of the most wonderful periods in my life” (heard from Mrs. Helen Geller).

for Moshiach because we want to be rich. We want him to come so that the Mighty Splendor of Hashem will be revealed in the world. Rav Wallach continues to explain that even before the Holocaust, all the Gedolim, including the Chofetz Chaim, proclaimed that the times of Ikvasei d’Meshicha, the Footsteps of Moshiach, had arrived. The great abundance of our times is preparing us for the wonderful times close-by, just ahead. The sun rises slowly from the crack of the dawn until it is in its zenith at noontime, to slowly accustom our eyes to the bright light. So too, HaKadosh Baruch Hu is getting us accustomed slowly to the incredible future awaiting our nation, very soon in our day. This article was taken from the forthcoming book by Vardah Littmann to be published by Menucha Publications around Pesach time. Featuring magnificent photos, the book will give a comprehensive history of the 1948 War of Independence and tour the Jerusalem Armistice Line starting in the north in Pagi (Sanhedria) all the way to Beit Tzafafa with 37 chapters of about 50 different places along this route, including a whole section about the Ring Neighborhoods like Har HaHoma and Ramat Shlomo.

used to get a 3 pm slump every day when I was eating a diet full of processed food. Now that I’ve changed my food choices to healthy ones, I have a lot more energy. I am always amazed at how I feel so much more energy now (even as I grow older), than I did then back when I was younger.

However, some habits have not changed. I still like to enjoy a cup of tea after lunch with a small sweet treat. Sometimes it will be a piece of fruit, or a piece of organic dark chocolate. Lately, it’s been this recipe. I love pumpkin spice, with or without the pumpkin to go along with it, so last week I thought, Wouldn’t it be nice to make some roasted pumpkin spiced nuts? They turned out to be scrumptious. The egg white coating creates a very crispy outer shell making this treat crunchy, sweet, and salty – a delicious combination for a satisfying snack to enjoy with my afternoon tea. I love that it is full of healthy fats and protein too.

-A Lesson in Dealing with Scoundrels Summary: After the war ends, Jo returns to Nice to retrieve the cash and jewelry which he entrusted for safekeeping with a local jeweler named Gaston Dutour. In tracking him down, Jo learns that this jeweler has since changed his name to Gaston Gontran de la Tour and is living in a mansion.

W

ithin fifteen minutes, Jo is in front of the imposing, three story building bearing the arms of the De la Tour. He rings the bell and a groom, in bowtie and tails, opens the

door, looking down at Jo's meter sixty from the height of his one meter ninety. "Monsieur desires?" he enquires. "I have to see Mr. Gast‌Gontran de la Tour, please, for some urgent matter." Jo answers. "Whom shall I announce?" The butler asks again. "Joseph Teichholz." Jo has barely identified himself when he realizes he would have done better to use his wartime name of Jo Terol. Indeed, his Jewish name did not seem to suit the butler's taste. After a few minutes, Jo is led to a richly decorated waiting room on the first floor. While waiting, Jo can appreciate the fine quality of the furniture, paintings, and Persian rugs. Through the half open entrance door, he can also note that an abundance of mean-looking servants are milling around the place. When Gontran finally comes in, Jo barely recognizes him. "What happened to him?" Jo ponders, "How theatrical he looks, and what a hairdo! He just looks ridiculous! Is that what people need to be rich for?" Jo does his best to conceal his surprise and tells Gontran in a businesslike manner what he came for. The latter though, shows no emotion at all. He just pretends not to know Jo and denies categorically having ever taken anything in consignment from anybody. He protests: "How can you even imagine that I would ever take the responsibility of safekeeping anybody else's belongings in such troubled times as a war?" Jo is dumbfounded. He can't believe his ears. He tries to argue, but de la Tour threatens to have him thrown out by his servants. Having no choice, Jo leaves the Hotel de la Tour. Now I'm bust, Jo thinks, What else can I possibly do? Instinctively, he starts walking back towards his hotel, but then he changes his mind. He remembers having passed by a U.S. Army base in the morning. Maybe there he can find someone ready to help him. The gates of the camp are half open, and Jo walks in. Soldiers are milling around in all directions, but none of them pay attention to him. He does not care if this makes him sound like he is crazy, but he goes around, from one group of soldiers to the other, asking: "Yehoody? Yehoody?" Finally, a young soldier pats his shoulder saying: "I am a Yehoody, brother, and my name is Jacob Gould. Can I help you?" Jo looks at the soldier, thinking: Even if that guy had not told me he is Jewish, I would have guessed it: he has the map of Galicia spread over his face! Jo tells Jacob everything about his misadventure at the de la Tour Hotel. Jacob, for his part, is still

Samuel shoves his foot the opening and tells the butler: "My buddy here, h e w a n t s h i s m o n e y b ac k. W e a i n't g o n n a l e av e w i t h o u t i t. G o t i t ? under the indelible impression of the horrors he has seen only some time ago, when he was among the first platoon of men who entered the hell of Treblinka. Jo's story makes him burn with anger. "Where is that S.O.B?," he exclaims, "I'll break his bones!" Jo tries to restrain him, explaining that Gontran is surrounded by mean-looking henchmen, but Jacob happens to be stubborn. "Just wait right here until I return," he says, "I'll only be gone a minute. I'm going to look for my best buddy!" A minute later, Gould is back with a friend and makes the introductions: "Samuel, this is Jo Teichholz, from Belgium; Jo, this is my pal Samuel Stein." Then he recounts to Samuel everything Jo had told him. When he has finished, Samuel, who is just as ebullient as his friend, tells Jo: "Just take us to that crook, he'll give you back your dough "subito – presto!" Jo seems bothered. He looks at these two skinny guys, and thinks: "They're nice boys, of course, and full of good will, but what can they possibly do against Gontran's private army?" Finally, he asks: "You don't have a few more friends, maybe?" Both GIs burst into a loud laughter. Seeing that Jo still hesitates, they grab him, each by one arm, and drag him manu militari to Gontran de la Tour's mansion. For the second time that day, Jo knocks heavily on the wooden door. The same butler as before opens it, declaring right away: "Mister de la Tour cannot be bothered in any way at the moment." Samuel shoves his foot the opening and tells the butler: "My buddy here, he wants his money back. We ain't gonna leave without it. Got it?" When he hears that, the butler frowns and purses his lip, while attempting to push Samuel out, but the latter, who is not used to that kind of treatment, kicks the door, delivers a short left uppercut to the butler's stomach, followed by a right hook to his temple, flattening him to the ground. While the butler is counting the myriad of new stars that have suddenly appeared onto his firmament, the three friends rush inside. What follows is a true game of massacre. Male servants appear on all sides, to almost instantly disappear, head first, into one or another piece of furniture. When Gontran enters the hallway, anxious to see what this racket is all about, Jacob points at him, saying: "The funny guy there looks like he's the boss, Jo, he's all yours!" Jo does his share lightheartedly and, a few moments later, a tooth-less, half-dead Gontran gives him back all his possessions, including compound interest, fidelity bonus and late payment penalty, all according to Samuel's calculation. Indeed, the latter having been a bank clerk before the war,

knows exactly how these things work. Joyously exiting the ransacked hotel, the three cronies go for a relaxing walk along the "Promenade des Anglais", on the seafront, where they ask someone to take their picture. When Jo tells the two GIs' how overwhelmed he is with their martial arts prowess, Samuel explains: "We're both amateur boxers. When we heard what the Fritzes were doing to our Jewish brothers and sisters, we both volunteered to the army, asking to be sent to Europe. While in the army, we pretty soon realized that anti-Semites can be found anywhere, but we knew how to make our fellow conscripts respect us. “What's more, we took advantage of our skills to earn passes for Shabbos. You see, Americans love boxing and our captain used to organize boxing bouts. We both asked to have our Shabbos free, instead of prize money: a saving for the captain, and a bonus for us. Except during engagements, we've spent almost every Shabbos with the local Jewish community." Jo thanked the two jolly good fellows wholeheartedly and wanted to reward them, but they refused, arguing that the fun they had gotten was plenty of a reward. After they had left, Jo reminded himself of the verse in the Book of Esther: "On the day that the enemies of the Jews had hoped to have power over them, the contrary happened, and the Jews had power over those that hated them." *** Jo did not forget the lesson taught by the two GIs. Back in Antwerp, he recovered all of his wife's silverware from his gentile next door neighbor, by using the same tactics. On another occasion, a few years later, while he was back at work at the Antwerp Diamond Exchange, he overheard someone say on an angry tone: "I don't know why so many Jews had to come back from concentration camp!" Jo knew that if he were to confront the man who had uttered that appalling question inside the Bourse, he would be stripped of his membership, the Exchange being a private club, with strict rules governing members' relationships and an intern judiciary system. So he inquired about the man's identity and asked one of the doormen to call him outside. When the man came out, Jo asked him calmly: "So you wonder why so many Jews came back from concentration camp, do you?" Then, without waiting to hear the answer, Jo delivered a straight punch to the man's jaw that produced a fine cracking noise, adding: "This is why."

The scent of winter is in the air . . Introducing Schmerling’s Orange Noir As we begin to feel the cool autumn winds, Schmerling invites you to warm up and enjoy a special winter taste. Schmerling has a mild bittersweet orange flavored chocolate with almond bits and a gentle citrus flavor that will leave you with a sweet taste in your mouth and a warm feeling in your heart.

Infomercial

Orange Noir, like all other Schmerling chocolate products, undergoes an extremely specialized manufacturing process, beginning with the selection of choice cocoa beans from tropical forests and culminating with Schmerling’s own tradition of Swiss chocolate production using their secret recipes which have been passed on for over 50 years of fine quality chocolate production. Schmerling’s products are under the kashrus supervision of the Badatz of Zurich and are available for purchase at chain and grocery stores.

Rochel Imenu Yahrzeit Event

Infomercial

Once again the organization-‫יש שכר לפעולתך‬-Kever Rachel Fund founded by Mrs. Miriam Adani anticipates a packed audience at the Ramada Jerusalem Hotel on Tuesday November 4th at 7:30 pm. Women from all over Israel will gather together on the yahrzeit of Rochel Imenu for an evening of chizuk and inspiration. Mrs. Chaya Werfel, the evening's MC, relates, "I have had women approach me over the past several years thanking us for letting them participate in such a unique event." One woman said, "I enjoy many evenings such as these, but each year the Kever Rochel evening touches my soul the most." One of the aspects that sets this kennes apart is the emphasis on the message that Momma Rochel is still with us and we can draw on her strengths and implement them into our daily lives. This year's theme, "It's all up to you!" promises to do the same.

This year's video, "Miracles at War - Operation Protective Edge." depicts the numerous stories of Yad Hashem and promises to leave all in attendance enthralled. We look forward to your joining thousands of women on Tuesday evening as we anxiously await the fulfillment of Hashem's words to our matriarch, Rochel, ‫לגבולם‬ ‫ושבו בנים‬.
