Dear Rocco, I recently got intimate for the first time with a guy that I had been seeing for about a month. It was also my first time having sex with anyone. While I made it clear that I was inexperienced, I didn’t outright tell him that I was a virgin. Now I’m wondering if that was a bad decision. I personally didn’t feel the need to tell him beforehand. I didn’t want him to feel pressured or for him to think that I had been waiting for “the one.” Realistically, I just haven’t dated many guys and hadn’t found anyone that I liked enough to have sex with. Should I bring it up to him? Should I wait to see if he asks about my past? VK

Dear Rocco, I go to college and live with my best friend. She’s not from here. I Googled her parents recently (for fully innocent reasons). I knew they were wealthier than my middle-class family, but I had no idea they were so rich. It was shocking. My friend is humble considering her wealth. Still, she has immense privilege and connections that I don’t. I’m also rethinking our decision to split checks. I think I need to raise her family wealth. What do you think? RB

This clip came from an episode where a young boy had been warned by Barney the Deputy about riding his bicycle on the sidewalk. On the third offense he had been brought in to the jailhouse and his bike was impounded. The boy was unrepentant and eventually basically said he wanted his father to go to jail instead of his bike being impounded. The father realized that the son cared more for a bike than the father’s freedom and announced he would sell the bike. Andy Taylor, the sheriff, then advised the father of the miscreant that there is a woodshed out back of the jail and the viewer is left to assume that the boy is taken out there to receive a spanking.

Teachers are also not getting the respect by children or the backing by parents that they used to. I know of one incident where a substitute teacher was threatened by a student’s parent after the teacher had taken the child to the principal’s office due to a behavior issue. In another case a child manufactured a story wherein the child was pushed by a substitute teacher. This after the teacher had verbally told him to cease some continuing disruptive behavior. The child apparently felt embarrassed by being upbraided and went home claiming he had been pushed by the substitute. A parent complained to the school administraBoy, have times changed. mently denied the allegation the powers that be decided that it would be better if that teacher did not teach at that school anymore. Thus to me the little juvenile delinquent learned how to get his way at a very young age. If you ever watched “The Andy Griffith Show” or “Leave It to Beaver” things were portrayed way different back then. Usually the family had a father and mother with two or three children - basically the nuclear family of the day. Shows with one parent made for drama like “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father” and “Family Affair”. If a TV family did not have a father and mother it was usually because of a death of the spouse. Single parents due to divorce or, God forbid, an unwed mother, were not approved for television. People had an expectation of what the nuclear family was and generally it was the two parents with children unit. As I was growing up in the 1960’s and 1970’s divorces seemed to be rare. I cannot recall any of my grade school classmates coming from a “broken home”. In high school I knew of no unwed (now termed “single” mothers. If the children committed some social infraction it was dealt with by their parents usually as a moral or ethical lesson. Then for several reasons the family unit seemed to be changing. Parents got divorced. Girls had babies without the infant being secretly adopted out. Single moms kept their babies and raised them.

and in many of those cases it appeared that the parent wanted to be more of a “cool parent” than a real parent to the child or children. They were no enforcing rules or imposing discipline that they should have been. I had several parents tell me “I don’t want to be the bad guy” when it appeared that discipline was needed and warranted. This lack of parental assertion of discipline seems to be rampant often due to “broken families” . Technology is another factor that I believe is definitely affecting the interaction of families. Now instead of voice contact parents and children often make contact via text or other electronic means.

heat by being left in the back of the car. This is exacerbated by parents being distracted by their phone. Whether its text, tweet, Snap Cheat (that’s what I call it) or some other form of electronic form of communication, its occupying the parent so they are not communicating with the child/children. I recently had a car pass me as we were leaving a red light. The child was in the car seat in the back with some type of “e” device in front of them while the father was driving and texting (illegal now by the way). I wager there will be little to no interaction between parent and child on that trip. Sadly that will be a normal status for that and many other families. In another incident my girlfriend was incensed that a mother in a restaurant was busy looking at her phone while her baby was in a high chair with an electronic toy. There was no interaction between the two. Again a norm for many “families”? I fear so.

As babies children are given “devices” to amuse themselves. On even short car trips now the child is usually put in the back seat in a car seat. There is no face to face front seat communication. On a trip back in the 90’s I had to keep I don’t have any scientific facts or a two-year-old occupied as we studies to support my theories drove back from out West. She was in a car seat but looking forward. We could point out things and somehow we stumbled on a game where I held up my hand and she would go “pow” while I dropped a finger or thumb with each imaginary shot. This game kept her amused for hours. Her Dad was a policeman, crack shot and avid gun collector so that may have influenced how that game came up.

I proposed my theory to a friend Too often the father was not in the that now children will no longer be picture. about some of the reasons for the disconnect between parents and their children being caused by electronics. I think some of it is obvious. Just look around and observe people’s behavior. The proof is right there in front of you. Society’s mores and entertainment are greatly influencing the family also causing some “disconnect”. Perhaps the changing structure of the American family (single parent, grandparent as parent, same sex parents, etc.) is causing some lack of interaction Oh, that families could be together for dinner engaging in conversation without everybody having their face in an electronic device. Then after dinner everybody could watch family programming with a moral or positive message and no profanity or hidden political or social agenda. The days of Mayberry and the Cleavers are long over. I’m glad I got to experience them.

A driver accidentally slammed on the gas while leaving a New Jersey car wash and plunged into a nearby river. The Hackensack Fire Department shared surveillance camera footage showing the 2002 Mercedes SUV leaving the car wash, abruptly speeding up and plunging over an embankment into the Hackensack River. The department said the

driver, a 64-year-old woman, and a passenger, the driver’s daughter, were able to exit the vehicle and get back to shore with the help of a bystander. The pair were taken to a local hospital without serious injuries. “Unfortunately, there’s no rules that say there has to be a guardrail there,” Hackensack Fire Captain Justin Derevyanik told local news. “That’s up to the property owner. But right now, we’re lucky that everybody got out.”

Ontario Provincial Police officers say a 2-year-old child was also in the car, sitting on a 30-can case of beer. The Wellington North driver, who was not unidentified in order to protect the child’s privacy, had allegedly put the case on the seat of his car and strapped the child to it. Dolginow said he has personally seen human feces abandoned next to trails on multiple occasions at Hunter Creek. Marijuana toxicity in dogs has been on the rise since states began legalizing recreational use of the plant, with the Pet Poison Helpline reporting a 448 percent increase in cases over the past six years. Veterinarians said dogs suffering from the condition typically suffer nausea and disorientation. Dolginow said the treatment is typically to keep the dog calm and hydrated until the THC naturally passes through the canine’s system.

The desire to have a selfie as a souvenir from running with the bulls in Spain turned into a near-death experience an American lawyer says he’ll never forget. A charging bull ran over and gored San Francisco resident Jaime Alvarez in the neck during the first run of this year’s San Fermin festival in Pamplona. “The joy and the excitement of being in the bullring quickly turned into a scare, into real fear for my life,” Alvarez, 46, said at a regional hospital where he was recovering from surgery. Doctors told Alvarez the bull’s horn went deep into his neck and fractured part of a cheekbone. That it didn’t hit the jugular vein or major arteries was described to the injured patient as “beyond miraculous.” Alvarez said he climbed onto a fence for safe-

ty and only returned to the arena to shoot a short video when he thought that the danger had passed. He wanted “a 5-second video scene to say ‘Here I am, I did it.’” That’s when the stray bull came at him running fast. “The impact was unlike anything I’ve ever felt. It was like being hit by a car or a truck,” Alvarez said. The selfie, on the other hand, turned out fantastic. There is a catch - you have an opportunity to measure up. It is actually a pretty simple. You need to stop using everyone else’s measuring stick and find your own! Let me say that again - quit using the same measuring stick as everyone else.

As you long as continue to follow others, you will never lead. This world needs a whole lot more leaders and less followers. If you never learn how to read your compass, you will always stay lost, and you can never captain your ship - your ship of life, joy and happiness. Friend, your captain’s hat is up for the taking. It belongs on your head. Added bonus, your hat will only fit on your head! Be brave enough to step up, grab what is your, and steer forward. - Michelle Haman For some people, me included, the fog that is in front of us is so thick you can’t see what you need to see. You need to chill, reset, check and adjust your compass. In the process of floating through life, checking off to-do lists and such, we have lost the purpose of living. We are constantly rushing from one moment to the next. Not even enjoying the moment in front of us (thick fog). We think the more things we accomplish the better we are. Makes us more important, I suppose. Sadly we are missing the most important events in our lives. Moments that we will never get back. The nights sitting under the stars just chatting it up. Running from one sunset to the next not even seeing the beauty each night endless jars of lightening bugs, evenings where we just sit, and do nothing else but be together. Those are the marks on your measuring stick you need to account for. Most often those are the times no one else knows about. Those are the special moments you keep close to your heart. The moment you quit treating your life like it is a destination, instead of the journey it was meant to be, you can find peace. Instead, we just compare our journey to every-

Are you trying to make your kids happy, now that’s a joke. How about that boss or coworker of yours? Are they demanding you to give more? There will always be weak links. In the scheme of life people make us feel that nothing is ever enough. What about your friends? Can you show up in a ragged mess and still be loved? Are you brave enough to hang your dirty laundry out on the line in front of them? Or does the fear of being compared to the others have you sinking down? Stop making yourself small in order to make others feel better about themselves. Friend, you are only responsible for your ship.

usually in four-hour shifts. Unlike our TV gods who we only saw for a half hour at a time, these deejays spent an afternoon, evening and even overnight when we needed them. They were the calming voice when we were upset. They would take our phone calls and play songs we requested to put us in the mood or keep the mood going. Often we had an equally emotional tied to the disc jockey as we did the song. Most songs last only three minutes, whereas the deejay was there for hours a day. realized they could cut expenses and increase profits by using technology that allowed them to do a thing called voice tracking. They would get a voice talent to prerecord breaks between songs that made it sound like they were actually on the air live and a computer would play these breaks between an automated programmed music totally eliminating the need for a live deejay. Many radio stations over the years have actually had no live talent. Station owners would refer to their station as the “station in the closet” – basically a computer with all the music, traffic, weather and voice announcements. There was no longer any interaction with the voice on the radio. Radio ruled the world until the Any contest had listeners call mid ‘90s when radio stations into a 1-800 number and not a

come and gone in the market or moved on to TV or a marketing job Lovin continues to thrive and today despite decades of accomplishments and being on the radio he has perhaps become even more relevant in recent years. A little over a year ago radio station WFLI was purchased by Evan Stone and Marshall Bandy and theoretically returned the station to it’s old glory. In 1961 WFLI 1070 AM came on the air as the first Top 40 station in the Chattanooga market where it was beast. After its first ratings book the station held a 20 share of the market, something it held for the most part until FM took over the market in 1978. In the late ‘60s legendary local jock Tommy Jett’s drive time show garnered a 70 share of the market, meaning seven out of every ten radios in the

WFLI launched a FM signal now known as WJTT (Power 94) but WSKZ got the jump on them and was unable to compete. WFLI changed their format to country briefly before switching to a religious format that remained until the spring of 2018 when the station was about to go silent. Stone and Bandy bought the station and converted the station to its original format, Top 40 with the caveat that it was classic Top 40, playing the songs from their original run from 1961 to fall of 1980 when they switched to country with an occasional song from 1981 making into the playlist. The station’s building was converted into the National Top 40 Radio Museum and Hall of Fame. The station was restored to its old glory complete with era appropriate furnishings including the radio control and productions rooms complete with the equipment from circa 1970 complete with turntables, cart machines and a control board that looks like something out of an old movie – all in perfect working condition. The only modern additions are computers and software that have the station’s music catalog marrying vintage and modern technology well. The new owners wanted to broadcast live from the museum and picked Lovin to be not

Gene’s love of music, being on the radio personality is addictive and humbling to everyone around him and myself to witness. We should all love what we do and be as good as it as Gene Lovin is. I’m happy that I have gotten to write this now so Gene could actually read it instead of being a eulogy as I’ve written over the years for other local radio and TV personalities. Long live Gene Lovin and thank you my friend.

Best Ten Songs of Famous Musical Offspring Although her famous husband was murdered nearly forty years ago, John Lennon’s widow has continued to help keep his memory as relevant as his music to this day. Yoko Ono celebrated her 86th birthday earlier this year, inspiring her long time fans and friends to reflect on her impact on the music world. She was just one of few women to be married to a member of The Beatles, and certainly the most well-known of those wives. She is also one of the few recording artists who had a child follow in her footsteps, as only a handful of those have appeared in the history of music. Her son Sean Lennon has established an impressive music career, be of as an artist or a producer or a promoter. I never thought I would be typing this, but I have now seen New Kids On the Block (NKOTB) on their last two tours. I’m not sure if I should be ashamed or admit a growing admiration for this part of pop culture. I’ll admit the first time it was out of curiosity. This time I can’t answer. What I did witness was the phenomenon of NKOTB that continues after 30 years.

What is a boy band? Of course it is a band of boys (young men). They sing and dance choreographed numbers all in harmony. Sound familiar yet? Since the beginning of popular music there have been “boy bands”, although the term wasn’t readily used until NKOTB, Backstreet Boys, NSYNC – you get the idea took over the radio as well as MTV (back when there was such a thing). NKOTB and the groups that followed. That doesn’t mean I’m a big fan, but I respect what they do more. There is also the phenomenon around them that I didn’t understand. But then again our parents didn’t understand The Beatles, The Monkees or even Duran Duran and the way young girls acted whenever they came to their town to perform either on TV or concert. This year it was the Mixtape Tour. There was a bunch of people with NKOTB. Talk about your ‘80s overdose, Tiffany,

Debbie Gibson, Salt-N-Pepa and Naughty By Nature joined the Kids. NKOTB were the main attraction (obviously). They opened and hosted the support acts playing between the other artists, as it was cassette heaven for the majority female crowd in attendance.

Naughty By Nature also received a lot of attention as well for their trio of songs. NKOTB also included a medley of ‘80s classics from artists such as Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Whitney Houston and more. Gary Pihl’s Alliance Has Fire And Grace Gary Pihl is one busy man. The longtime guitarist for Boston since the Third Stage album of course was also known as part of Sammy Hagar’s band during the singer’s best era of solo material before taking over for David Lee Roth in Van Halen. Having toured with Boston, Tom Scholz knew what he had to do and recruited Pihl for Boston. Jumping on the opportunity, Scholz brought him into the fold where he never looked back. After joining Boston the other members that now included Pihl were told by their leader that tours were between albums that took quite some time so everyone was encouraged to find side projects. Pihl along with former Hagar bandmates Alan Fitzgerald and David Lauser as well as Robert Berry known for his work with Carl Palmer and Keith Emerson. In their collective “spare time” they have put out five albums, their most recent Fire And Grace that came out the last week of May. Pihl took a break to talk about Alliance’s new album and talking gear with Boston’s founder Tom Scholz.

Dave Lauser and I were in Sammy’s (Hagar) band together, who of course was in Montrose and Alan Fitzgerald – again, played in Montrose and was also in Sammy Hagar’s band. In ’85 Sammy gets an offer he can’t refuse – joining Van Halen. We, actually at that time, Sammy said you’re such a great

band, you should just find another singer, plug him in and keep going. To that end, the record label Geffen put us in contact with Robert Berry. He had worked with

with Tom. After a couple of weeks Tom had said, “Gee, why don’t you move back here. We’ll finish this album, go on tour and see what happens.” I’ve been in the band

Carl Palmer and Keith Emerson, also Steve Howe from Yes. As it happened, one of the tours we had done with Sammy was to open up for Boston. So I got to know the guys. Tom Scholz of Boston heard I was leaving the band and he called me and said, “Why don’t you come and help me finish the Third Stage album? There’s one more song to be recorded.” At that point that was all he was offering – just to play on the track. I left from our last gig with Sammy, which was Farm Aid I in Champagne, Illinois and flew directly to Boston to work

ever since. After that Third Stage album Tom said, “It’s going to take a number of years to make the next Boston album, so if anybody has any side projects you want to do now is the time.” So I called up Dave Lauser and Alan Fitzgerald and said, “Hey let’s put something together.” Dave remembered Robert Berry. We called him up and the four of us got together down in Sammy’s recording studio and jammed on our ideas. Robert seemed like the brother we never had. That’s how the band was formed.

had a soldering iron when things would break for the band. “Hey Gary, see if you can fix this thing.” Maybe just a guitar cord or something like that, so I was always interested in the technical side of things. I eventually bought some recording equipment when I was in Sammy’s band and put together my first home studio then. You’re right. Alan Fitzgerald was in Sammy’s band with me and then left the band to start Night Ranger and he was looking for an inexpensive studio to record the stuff. (laughs) Of course I didn’t charge him anything. I was just glad to help out the band. They recorded a bunch of demos in my living room. One of them was “Sister Christian”. And I always like the band and thought they had great songs and great players. They’re still around, too. I was used to thinking technically about stuff and I was interested in the sounds that you’re making and of course how to record them as well. To me it was all kind of the same thing about getting the sound. And to that degree, again, when I was the opening act for Boston – Sammy

So there’s Jeff, he’s going to plug into this bass amp and my buddy was, Oh my god, that’s going to be horrible – a guitar player plugging into a bass amp!” He said Jeff plugged in and it sounded exactly the same as his guitar amp. It was the player – not the equipment. It was the player.

Oh yeah, because I’m listening for both things. If they sound right – not only if I like the sound myself, but how does it fit into the track with the rest of the instruments. Again – is there too much treble, too much distortion? How does it fit with everything else? That’s the producer’s side coming out too. and I opened for them. Tom Scholz, of course was an electronics genius and I’d be asking him about his gear and how he got his sounds. Maybe I was bugging him. “Hey, how what’s this? How does this work? What’s this thing over

here?” He was nice enough to tell me what he was doing. When he started his own electronics company called Rockman, he actually had me demonstrate some of the products at a trade show for him. We kind of kept in touch that way. We always had that in mind. For Fire And Grace, this new Alliance album I wanted my own guitar sound. I loved the Boston guitar sound – but that’s for Boston. I didn’t want to sound like I played guitar in Sammy’s band because that was that sound. So I built my own tube guitar amp to use on this album. Nobody in the world can sound like that because there’s only one of those amps - it was mine. Go ahead and do it on your own he laughed and left. I recorded my part. But I’ve certainly recorded other stuff when he was in the room.
