From the Publisher’s Notebook I’m amazed at how many people hide behind voicemail. Are they that lazy or just don’t give a darn? Same way with emails. What happened to doing business face-to-

face? A lot of people you deal with nowadays are rude. Seems like they are just waiting for payday. A lot of workers nowadays expect a big raise if the company is making money, but don’t want to chip in if the company has a loss.

Dear Rocco, How do opposites attract. My best friend is one of the hippest guys I now. He dresses and acts cool and all. His wife, on the other hand is a very reserved lady who dresses as a professional – as does he, except she’s kind of nerdy. We went on my boat the other day and I almost flipped out. She was dressed like a tourist with the matching shorts outfit (hat, top, and pants all coordinated). I about fell out. I thought people only dressed like that in movies and in retirement homes. We’re all in out thirties. What gives? They seem pretty happy and have children, but knowing him for as long as I have, they make an odd pair. OL

I almost hit a few people downtown after the beer festival. A group of drunk hell raisers jumped in front of my car carrying on. I slammed my brakes and barely missed them. They were obviously over the limit. There were no cops in sight. How come they’ll let people wander the streets drunk like that during this event and places like Riverbend and they give restaurants and night clubs such a hard time? SD

Modern Media Goofs, Gaffes, and the Loss of Tense & Sense in Today’s Television Reporting About two years ago I noticed a trend in local television news where the story would be described in present tense although it had already happened. For example, a reporter might have been describing a fire that happened the previous day. However, they would say something like “a fire rages through an apartment complex leaving several families homeless”. I soon noticed a trend for most television news stories to be delivered all or in part in the present tense. A perusal of the national news shows revealed the same trend to “present tense” news. After I mentioned this trend to a group of teachers several of them told me they had also noticed this trend in news reporting. They related it also annoyed them. I have two theories as to how this trend of present tense news reporting came about. One is that the news networks are so competitive not only with other news networks but also internet news sources that they want to sensationalize stories so they report them as if they are

actually happening. As so many people get their news from the internet which is often in real time I think the networks may be feeling this pressure to appear to be in the present My other theory is that the

state they “seen” something when they mean they “saw” the event. How did “seen” come to be commonly used as past tense?

‘major network’ the “reporter” paused as she was reading a sentence from the teleprompter. A male anchor intervened and told her the word she had paused at was Next I want to mention some goofs, comedienne. She stumbled through the pronunciation then said “that’s a female comedian I guess”. I am not sure why these people don’t read the stories prior to going on the air. It might avoid them having to be coached on the “hard words”.

Here are just some random examples of out-of-sequence elements of stories. “The 47-year-old was shot to death at a gas station ...after filling his cruiser with gas for no apparent reason”. I don’t think they meant he filled the cruiser with gas “for no apparent reason” but that was how the story was people writing the stories do not slips, or mistakes I found interest- reported. There was some additionknow the difference between pres- ing. . On Monday morning on a ent and past tense. Sadly I have observed this trend frequently in conversations with people or after reading written reports or accounts of events where people related past events in the present tense. Sadly many Southern witnesses often

saying is “wrap your head around”.

Let’s not forget those TV sports announcers. From a 2015 Tennessee Vols game the announcer told viewers “...training staff is working on Owen Williams’ right hand. They put a “stint” over his middle and ring finger”. Could it have been a splint maybe?

Now let me mention a few more misused or just plain strange uses of some phrases. I saw a story where a girl had been ordered by a judge to walk the distance of a cabride she had skipped out on. The reporter stated this “controversial punishment was “handed over”. The phrase is “handed out”.

Or there’s the reference to football where the reporter advised the Democratic party was going to “Pass a Hail Mary”. The phrase is actually “Throw a Hail Mary”. Many viewers probably don’t know what that phrase means or refers to. This brings me to mention the new trend of news writers using what were at one time common phrases or expressions. One problem with using such phrases is that many viewers or listeners do not know what the phrase or saying means. The other is that the phrase or saying is misstated as in the “Hail Mary” story just related. From a major news network a reporter advised that a captured escaped prisoner was “now talking a blue streak”. What does “talking a blue streak” mean? Another asked an athlete how the athlete could “wrap their arms around” a concept. The

How about when a local reporter said “Police killed both of them in a shoot-about”. First round-abouts now shoot-abouts. Please forgive my finding humor in this. So the next time you are watching the news try to determine when the event the news is covering actually happened. I just saw a story where the “talking head” (announcer) reported “just hours ago a train “hits” a car while it’s crossing the tracks.” I can only shake my head. Are they trying to interest the viewer more by putting the story in present tense or is it due to lack of knowing better? Does anyone even care? Let the reader decide.

South Australia police said they have “ruled out the possibility of a Sharknado” in the mystery of a shark found in a roadside puddle. Police said a member of the public contacted authorities Friday morning to report finding a small shark partially submerged in a roadside puddle in the town of One Tree Hill. Fauna Rescue South Australia responded to the scene and transferred the shark, believed to be a Port Jackson shark, to a water tank. The group said the shark was alive at the

time of its rescue, but later died. “How the shark came to be in the puddle is still a mystery, however, police have ruled out the possibility of a Sharknado,” police said. “It is believed the shark may have been caught earlier today and dumped, or was kept as a pet but was growing too large for its tank.” An 8-pound gold nugget valued at about $190,000 was discovered by a seasoned prospector in Australia. According to metal detector manufacturing company Minelab, the anonymous prospec-

As I began to scrape away the clay and dig deeper, I really couldn’t believe my eyes this wasn’t an old piece of steel in front of me. I had just unearthed a colossal gold nugget - a once in a lifetime find! I was in total disbelief as I didn’t think nuggets of

this size were still around” The man had previously made a promise to split any large finds with his prospecting friends and plans to buy a van to travel across Australia with his share of the proceeds. The nugget dubbed “Friday’s Joy” was sent to a bank vault where plans to have a replica have been made as the original is prepared for auction. There is an old saying in business that goes, the customer is always right, but the owner of a super-

market in Oregon must have been questioning the wisdom of that philosophy when a customer drove her car through the front of the store. The woman was angry that she was not allowed to purchase a large quantity of gift cards at a Safeway. 43-year-old Noella Fay tried to purchase $2,200 in gift cards, but when she tried to pay by check, the check did not clear. Noella was not happy. Fay left the store, went into the parking lot and parked her vehicle outside the front doors. When an employee told her to move the vehicle, she started screaming about wanting to buy gift cards. She then drove her Chevrolet Tahoe through the doors and into the supermarket, down one of the aisles of the store sending shoppers fleeing, and then left the store through the back doors. Fay was charged with reckless endangering, hit-and-run, reckless driving and criminal mischief. No one was injured as a result of the incident. An “erratic” Ohio man who was “acting like a gorilla” and “masturbating on the sidewalk” is facing a disorderly conduct charge, according to police. Responding to 911 calls about a pair of “white males running around the lot taking off their clothes,” Warren City Police Department officers encountered Timothy Cook, 32, who reportedly had been “growling and punching the cement.” A witness told officers Cook had entered a state motor vehicles office and began waving his arms around. He then exited the building and “began masturbating on the sidewalk,” according to a police report. When an officer subsequently approached Cook, the suspect was sweating profusely and “acting like a gorilla.” An officer noted Cook was “squatting on all fours, punching the blacktop and jumping up and down screaming noncoherently.” Cook was detained without incident and placed into an ambulance. Paramedics treated Cook for an apparent overdose, though police records do not indicate what drug (or drugs) he may have used.

A California student won a large amount of money after having sex with his teacher and getting her pregnant. Laura Whitehurst was 24 when she had a sexual relationship with her 16-year-old student. Dipsite telling the boy that she cannot conceive, the teacher became pregnant by him. The teacher had a year-long relationship with the boy and gave birth to his daughter when he was just 17 years old. The student, who is now 21, sued the school district, claiming that they knew about the affair and they “turned a blind eye,” allowing the teacher to continue having sex with him. The attorney for the student, said that the school did not inform the student’s family or law enforcement over the sexual abuse of the student. The Redlands Unified School District officials agreed to settle the lawsuit for $6 million. Whitehurst was arrested and sentenced to one year in county jail and five years of probation. The student, who was present at the birth, has shared custody of the baby. However there is a no-contact order between the teacher and her daughter’s father. sitting is in an empty classroom. The police officer who arrived at the scene, could smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Hill’s breath. She admitted to drinking orange juice and vodka on her way to work. She also told police that she had vodka in her car, which was in the school parking lot.

A teacher was arrested on a charge of public intoxication after allegedly showing up on the first day at her job under the influence of alcohol, according to police in Oklahoma. The Wagoner Police Department said that they have arrested 49-year-old Lorie Ann Hill, after the principal of the Wagoner High School, found her in a classroom without pants. In court, Hill pleaded not guilty to a charge of public intoxication. She was booked into jail and her bail was set at $149. According to the police investigation, the incident unfolded early on Monday morning. Hill showed up for her first day of work while she was intoxicated. She was not wearing pants or shoes. The principal found her

Passengers and flight attendants of a Virgin America flight were surprised to see a woman show up without pants. Passengers took photos of the woman, who was not identified, as she stood at the ticket counter to collect her boarding pass. The photos show the woman dressed in a beige jacket, leaning against the counter as a staff member is seen talking on the phone with a manager. She did not wear any pants and her black underpants was visible, exposing most of her behind. Virgin America encourages all passengers to relax and unwind when flying, and this woman clearly took their advice. A photo of the woman was uploaded on Reddit, where it went viral.

If there is one place you want to use some playful antics and a little harmless hijinx to relieve stress and tension it is the cockpit of a commercial airliner. That must have been the thinking of the crew of an Air New Zealand flight when pictures and video showed up on Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram of the pilot posing with an inflatable doll in the cockpit. One image shows a pilot kissing the doll. A video shows an air hostess walking through a cabin spitting water. The caption on the video says: “Wish I could spit on passengers like this.” An Air New Zealand spokeswoman said the company was “shocked and appalled” by the images. “These images were brought to our attention in the past 48 hours and an investigation commenced immediately. We believe the video was produced about four years ago and the photos were taken more ENIGMA

A did not think they needed the At the age of 68-69 I made a really crazy decision. Really crazy.

I was not there to baby sit – my job was to see that the house chapter rules were followed and to try to modify their over the top behavior to follow school rules.

I decided to move in a frat house on my old college campus and be a House Dad. I must have been nuts.

From the beginning a small group of the hardcore members who were going to do it their way showed a lot of resentment (more of that later).

Let me explain how this all came about and some of the results. (The frat will remain unnamed because of my love for this organization – so will the school for the same reason.)

The first social event held at the house after I moved in set the tone of what to expect. It was a bring your own booze – everyone invited.

I, along with several other alumni brothers were serving on the House committee that owned the house the fraternity occupied.

I was shocked to see carloads of girls showing up and carrying their own booze – beer and lots of hard stuff.

A huge amount of money along with a great amount of dedication from two loyal alumni had just completed a major overhaul bringing the house up to the standard it needed to be. The two did a great job.

I stood back and watched – spending most of my time back in my apartment coming out now and then to check it out, Around 3am I decided it was time to act. I went around the house and down in the party basement turning all the lights on and saying party over – go home. I thought I was going to be killed. The hostility could be cut with a knife. To say my popularity sank to a new low that night is an understatement. I finally got it shut down and the house cleared out around 3:30am – that’s right, 3:30 at night. So the first battle was a draw. This was the start of a constant battle that revolved around alcohol and late night noise. We had a next-door neighbor that called the school at the drop of a hat. Even though he knew he I knew it was an impossible task to keep booze out of the house, so I offered a deal. They would keep their boozing in the party rooms in the basement and I wouldn’t go down there during party time.

Just about the entire time I was House Dad the active chapter was in and out of trouble with the school being put on probation and restrictions on social activities. Luckily we had enough members that had enough sense and backbone to help straighten things out. At last they got in trouble one more time and National sent a death squad from headquarters.

This Is the End... For better or worse, the Chattanooga Football Club phenomenon created legions of club supporters who are more fans of Chattanooga than football. The unprecedented growth of the team’s fan base has been a global event. The team’s top-notch marketing efforts are simultaneously Southern-fried and continental. The Chattanoogans whose vocal enthusiasm for the community helped them become part of the team’s loud and proud Chattahooligans have learned about the world’s biggest game along the way. None of those things helped make the 2-1 National Professional Soccer League tournament semifinal loss to the Sonoma County Sol any easier to bear. Make no mistake. This one hurt… a lot. For sports fans raised on the sometimes gaudy scorelines of “American football,” a 2-1 loss to a team from California should (in theory) be something that didn’t come as much of a surprise. For those of us who have grown up playing “the beautiful game” and are also Chattanoogans, this defeat was excruciating. I suppose now is as good a time as any for me to toss away any pretense of journalistic objectivity. I was a football fan well before I was a journalist. As a British-born military brat whose late mother was from Bedford, England, and whose father is a proud graduate of City High, I have been a fan of football and Arsenal Football Club since I was eight. CFC has several Brits on its roster. The absence of one of them had an awful lot to do with last Saturday night’s defeat at the hands of the boys from wine country.

sneaky and snarky reference to Home Box Office’s immensely popular “Game of Thrones” was the early story line of the match vs. Sonoma County. CFC’s leading scorer, Norwich native Luke

Winter, was stuck at Washington, DC’s Ronald Reagan National Airport. Winter had flown up north a few days before the match to participate in a friend’s wedding. But a cruel twist of meteorology prevented the Chattahooligans’ favorite footballer from being at Finley Stadium for the NPSL semi. It would be unfair to the other fine members of CFC to say Winter’s absence sealed the hometown team’s fate… but… it made a tough task even tougher. You can’t really say that having Luke in the lineup would have sealed a victory for the homeboys, but I think Chattanooga would have scored more than one goal if he had been there.

that is a crazy night of Chattanooga football. The Hoolies have a huge drum corps now... under the direction of orchestra leader Galen Riley. (Confession: My right index finger is still healing from a wee blister earned while I bashed a borrowed tomtom the week before CFC’s season-ending loss. The percussion section has greatly expanded during my absence of several years.) I stood in the general vicinity of the visiting keeper for the second half as well. Of course I did. I wanted to be close to the nets when CFC scored again. And it almost happened… a couple of times. But Winter wasn’t coming. His teammates knocked on the door a lot, but they never got through. Sonoma, on the other hand, put two past Chattanooga ‘keeper Greg(or) Hartley in the second half (plus three more in “stoppage time”). No loss is good. But this one will hurt for a long while…

enough to later ask the Sonoma goalkeeper if they ever got crowds “like this” for their home matches. They do not. A brief conversation with one of the visiting substitutes revealed that the Sol men typically played in front of about 1,000 supporters. There were 12,241 at Finley last Saturday night. The eventual winners were “It was devastating, heartbreakawestruck by the phenomenon ing,” said CFC coach Bill Elliott,

The song became well known again in the late 1970s as the closing song performed by Sha Na Na on their weekly variety show as well as its appearance in American Graffiti and again in the late 1980s after its use in the hit film Three Men and a Baby.

1957 A 16-year-old Canadian lad named Paul Anka had the number one song in America with “Diana”. A story circulated that Paul had a crush on his younger brother and sister’s babysitter who wanted nothing to do with him. He then supposedly wrote a poem for her and later set it to music. Anka himself later refuted the story. The record became an international hit that stayed at the top of the UK chart for nine weeks.

1956 Elvis Presley made his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in front of 54 million TV viewers, which gave the program an 82.6 rating. Elvis sang “Don’t Be Cruel”, “Love Me Tender”, “Hound Dog” and “Ready Teddy” for host Charles Laughton who was filling in for Sullivan who was recovering from a recent car accident. The next day, record stores were swamped with requests for “Love Me Tender”, although its release date was weeks away. There were also well organized letter writing campaigns and petitions against Presley, but it was later brought to light that many of the signatures were fictitious or of deceased people. RCA Victor Co. announces that it has received over 856,327 advance orders for Elvis Presley’s next single, “Love Me Tender”. The song,
