LONELY HOUR Although the first solo single from soul-inspired, London-born artist Sam Smith was issued in early 2013, it was his soaring vocal contribution to Disclosure's October 2012 U.K. garage track "Latch" that brought him to most people's attention. For most of his teens, Smith balanced study with music, soaking in the raw and passionate approach to performance exemplified by his favorite artists at that time such as Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Chaka Khan. Capital Records released is debut album this past May, “In the Lonely Hour”. Two of the singles on his debut have reached the top of the charts in the U.K. and now he’s going to try and take the states by storm. Smith travels south were he will perform The Dream Police! How The Rockefellers Became Environmentalists There is nothing more delightful than getting a decent dose of irony. If it happens to be irony of a particularly delicious kind, then I say bring it on. It lifts the spirits, makes you smile and gives you hope. So you can imagine my reaction when I opened the newspaper this morning and saw the headline: Rockefeller Foundation To Divest From Fossil Fuels. I initially thought I was seeing things. The Rockefellers giving up petroleum is like saying the Pope is giving up religion. This a family whose very name conjures up the black stuff. They are the real deal when it comes to black gold or Texas tea. Forget about the story of a man named Jed. His name was John D. Rockefeller.

company was, at one time, the largest oil refiner in the world and the benchmark for the industry. It gave birth to numerous global empires including one of the biggest, ExxonMobil. And now the family is turning their backs on the industry that earned them a fortune. They want to invest in, wait for it, renewable energy. It is the kind of betrayal that sits comfortably alongside that guy Iscariot and his 30 pieces of silver.

So if you are going to stab an industry in the back, the 64 trillion dollar question is why? Why would you do it? The answer, would you believe, is breathtakingly simple. Fossil fuels are bad for people and bad for this planet. That's what the current crop of Rockefeller heirs are Standard Oil, the Rockefeller saying. According to Valerie

Rockefeller Wayne, a great, great grand-daughter of the big man himself there is a moral imperative to preserve a healthy planet. You might think that kind of talk would be enough to have John D turning in his grave but maybe not says Stephen Heintz, the Director of the family's philanthropic foundation the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. Heintz, says the move to divest from fossil fuels would be in line with John D's thinking. As an astute businessman looking into the future he would be investing in clean, renewable energy and that is exactly what the family intends to do. In other words take the family's $860 million in assets and put them into clean energy.

ately timed to coincide with a big UN climate change summit in New York due to begin next week. It will be the first gathering of its type since the unsuccessful climate conference in Copenhagen in 2009. And it should come as no surprise that a number of prominent people are 100 percent in support of the Rockefellers. South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu said he believed the Rockefeller announcement was a "tipping point of transition to a new energy economy that was just and equitable." Actor Mark Ruffalo chimed in with the observation that the Rockefellers were not silly people. They knew how to deal with money and renewable energy was investing in the future. and see the Rockefellers as knights in shining armor motivated by a burning desire to save our environment. That is partially true but there is also the cynical business of wanting to make more money underpinning the Rockefeller decision. One of the other trustees Stephen Rockefeller said as much when he talked about the moral and economic dimension behind the family decision. The economic dimension that he is referring to is a risk that Governments will impose tighter regulations on the petroleum industry because of the effects of climate change. Instead of being dug up, oil and a number of other fossil fuels would be left in the ground and that cuts into industry profit. The Rockefeller decision is part of a growing trend already established. In recent years, about 180 philanthropic societies, religious organisations, pension funds, local government as well as hundreds of wealthy individual investors have pledged to sell assets tied to fossil fuel companies and reinvest in cleaner alternatives.

2014. But you couldn't put a price in terms of the PR value from the Rockefeller decision which is a huge boost to the campaigners who say we are living in a planet that is getting warmer every year. Experts say global greenhouse gas emissions increased 2.3 percent in 2013 to record levels. China, the United States, the European Union and India are the worst emitters. Environmentalists point out that emissions rose by 2.9 percent in the United States after several years of decline. That is very troubling. Scientists say the clock is ticking and emissions must start declining within the next few years for one very good reason. Time is running out to dial back the damage. The Rockefellers clearly don't want to be caught standing on the wrong side of climate change. Those who do might be in danger of losing everything especially the world we live in.

Sports Gumbo It’s been a while since I whipped up a batch of sports gumbo. For the uninitiated, my “gumbos” are collections of brief rambles on various topics. So… here we go… …There’s no such thing as a “moral victory” in college football… or any other sporting contest. You either win or you lose. But Tennessee’s 35-32 loss at Georgia last Saturday proved that the Vols are making progress. Bulldog running back Todd Gurley collected 208 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries, keeping his name in the Heisman Trophy debate. No one expected Tennessee’s defense to shut Gurley down. The big surprise came from the Vols’ offense.

UT racked up over 400 yards in total offense against Georgia, which bodes well for this Saturday’s matchup against Florida… …It’s been 10 years since the Vols beat the Gators. FM and I were in attendance at Neyland Stadium when James Wilhoit’s 50-yard field goal gave Tennessee a dramatic 30-28 victory. Ten years is a long time. Lots of pundits are predicting an end to Florida’s near-decade of dominance this Saturday in Knoxville. Will Muschamp’s Gators are no longer the chomping menace of years past. Florida amassed only 200 yards of total offense against Alabama and needed overtime to beat Kentucky in

ENIGMA

Gainesville. Butch Jones’ Vols, on the other hand, are battlehardened… despite having 22 true freshmen see action thus far. Senior quarterback Justin Worley performed with poise in hostile circumstances at Oklahoma and Georgia. Freshman running back Jalen Hurd picked up 119 yards and a touchdown in Athens, including a great run from the quarterback position in a “wildcat” formation. I think Tennessee by 10 makes for a poetic prediction… …Local sports coverage was dominated by the first-ever Ironman competition in Chattanooga this past weekend. Sadly, the success of the event was tarnished by a dead body and the actions of some brain-dead residents. The Sunday morning discovery of a floating corpse across the Tennessee River from Ross’s Landing put a bit of a damper on the start of the race. But the show went on. Unfortunately, the bicycle portion of the competition was hindered by the morons who put motor oil and tacks on a portion of a North Georgia road being used for the race. I can’t fathom the level of selfishness and stupidity it takes to commit such potentially dangerous vandalism, but I hope the Ironman organizers won’t let those actions prevent them from holding more events here. Downtown

Chattanooga was overrun by Ironmen (and Ironwomen) from last Thursday through Monday. The estimated economic impact of the event was $8 million… …I’m not much of a golf fan, but I’ve always enjoyed the Ryder Cup. There’s something about the U.S. vs. Europe competition that rouses nearOlympic patriotism in me. Unfortunately, the Europeans dominated again this year. With a 16-1/2 to 11-1/2 victory, Europe earned the gold trophy for the eighth time in the last 10 tries. The big surprise after the match play ended was the criticism leveled at U.S. captain Tom Watson by team member Phil Mickelson. At a press conference following the closing ceremony, Mickelson claimed the Americans have strayed from the winning formula used at Valhalla in 2008. (The last time the U.S. won.) Watson was sitting just six seats away as Mickelson said the 2008 team was “invested in each other,” as opposed to following Watson’s style of “doing it his way.” Harsh. The bottom line is that world number one Rory McIlroy and the other Europeans hit big shots under pressure. It’s not like Mickelson and the other Americans had to dodge tacks and motor oil on the fairway. Lefty’s just a sore loser…

HAMILTON, Ontario (UPI) - A Canadian man accused of drunkenly vandalizing a church and washing himself in holy water was arrested while shirtless on the ground, police said. Police said the man and a woman entered St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Hamilton, Ontario, and the visibly intoxicated couple made a drunken scene. Police said the couple loudly used profanity and the 26-yearold man washed himself in a large holy water bath before they were

scolded by a female church member who was inside the building at the time. The couple left, but the man returned a short time later without a shirt, police said. He allegedly poured wine on a rag and unsuccessfully attempted to ignite it before throwing communion bread all over the facility and allegedly stealing a rosary. The man was again escorted out of the church by the female member, who called police. Officers found the man on the ground outside the church, shirtless and wearing the stolen rosary. Management said October will be “Zombie Preparedness Month” to help residents prepare for the undead and other disasters. The department said Gov. Sam Brownback will sign a proclamation Sept. 26 designating October as “Zombie Preparedness Month.” Devan Tucking of the Kansas of Division of Emergency Management said the zombie theme is a means of encouraging Kansas residents to be ready for a number of potential real-life emergency scenarios. “If you’re equipped to handle the zombie apocalypse then you’re prepared for tornadoes, severe storms, fire and any other natural disaster Kansas usually faces,” Tucking said. “This is a fun and low-stress way to get families involved, and past turnouts have proven it to be effective.” Angee Morgan, deputy director of the division, said officials incorporated zombies into the public information campaign “because it is an engaging way to get people on board with emergency preparedness.” Officials said members of the public will be encouraged to prepare home emergency kits with survival supplies to last at least three days and disaster-on-the-go packs will be free for the first 300 participants at a zombie preparedness event Oct. 25 at the Crestview Shelter House in Topeka.

CANADA - It seems a Canadian was caught at the border with 51 live turtles stuffed down his pants. His is now facing charges in the U.S. over an alleged reptile smuggling operation. The U.S. federal court documents show officers with the Canada Border Services Agency intercepted Kai Xu as he attempted to cross into Windsor, Ont., from Detroit last month (apparently a hotbed of turtle smuggling). “During the secondary inspection, Xu was found to have 51 live turtles taped to his person,” Kenneth Adams, a special agent with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, stated in an affidavit. “Specifically, Xu had 41 turtles taped to his legs and 10 hidden between his legs.” Canadian authorities seized the turtles, which included North American varieties such as eastern box turtles, red-eared sliders and diamondback terrapins - some of which sell for $800 each - and turned them over to American officials. And this isn’t even the first time Xu has been caught with contraband reptiles. It is speculated that the cache was headed for China where turtles are apparently TWO RIVERS, Wis. other way to escape it.” TAMPA, FL - A massage therapist has gone to extreme lengths to become a reality TV star, undergoing surgery to add a third breast to her chest. The Florida woman, who goes by the name Jasmine Tridevil, said she spent $20,000 on the procedure a few months ago after finally finding a doctor willing to perform the operation. “I called 50 doctors,” Tridevil said. “It was really hard finding someone that would do it too because they’re breaking the code of ethics.” Tridevil’s third breast was constructed in the middle of her chest with a silicone implant and skin tissue cut from her abdomen. The surgeon was not able to make an artificial areola, so Tridevil had one tattooed on. Tridevil, whose dream is to have her own MTV reality show, said her parents did not take the news of her third breast well. “My mum ran out the door. She won’t talk to me. She won’t let my sister talk to me. My dad - he really isn’t happy. He is kind of ashamed of me but he accepted it,” she said. As well as hoping for fame and fortune, Tridevil said there was another major reason she had the surgery. “I got it because I wanted to make myself unattractive to men. Because I don’t want to date anymore,” she said. “Most guys would think [the extra breast is] weird and gross. But I can still feel pretty because if I wore makeup and cute clothes, I can still, you know... feel pretty.”

O PEN ING T HI S WEEK Annabelle R John Form has found the perfect gift for his expectant wife, Mia—a beautiful, rare vintage doll in a pure white wedding dress. But Mia’s delight with Annabelle doesn’t last long. On one horrific night, their home is invaded by members of a satanic cult, who violently attack the couple. Spilled blood and terror are not all they leave behind. The cultists have conjured an entity so malevolent that nothing they did will compare to Gone Girl R GONE GIRL – directed by David Fincher and based upon the global bestseller by Gillian Flynn – unearths the secrets at the heart of a

Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble. Soon his lies, deceits and strange behavior have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife? When the Boxtrolls are targeted by villainous pest exterminator Archibald Snatcher, who is bent on eradicating them as his ticket to Cheesebridge society, the kindhearted band of tinkerers must turn to their adopted charge and adventurous rich girl Winnie to bridge two worlds amidst the winds of change and cheese.

As Above/So Below PG-13 Miles of twisting catacombs lie beneath the streets of Paris, the eternal home to countless souls. When a team of explorers venture into the uncharted maze of bones, they uncover the dark secret that lies with this city of the dead. A journey into madness and terror.

Dolphin Tale 2 PG It has been several years since young Sawyer Nelson and the dedicated team at the Clearwater Marine Hospital, headed by Dr. Clay Haskett, rescued Winter. With the help of Dr. Cameron McCarthy, who developed a unique prosthetic tail for the injured dolphin, they were able to save her life. Yet their fight is not over. Winter’s surrogate mother, the very elderly dolphin Panama, has passed away, leaving Winter without the only poolmate she has ever known. However, the loss of Panama may have even greater repercussions for Winter, who, according to USDA regulations, cannot be housed alone, as dolphins’ social behavior requires them to be paired with other dolphins. Time is running out to find a companion for her before the team at Clearwater loses their beloved Winter to another aquarium.

The Boxtrolls PG Cheesebridge is a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least, that’s the legend residents have always believed. In truth, the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells. The Boxtrolls have raised an orphaned human boy, Eggs, since infancy as one of their dumpster-diving and mechanical junk-collecting own. ENIGMA

The Bristol Sessions took place after the Victor Talking Machine Co. invented a device capable of recording music for the masses. Victor producer Ralph Peel set up a makeshift studio in the Taylor-Christian Hat Co. warehouse on State Street, recording 76 songs in 10 days. Newspaper ads drew singers and musicians from around the Appalachian region, coming by train, horse-andbuggy and on foot. Pentecostal clan of musicians out of Nashville eschewed the country music route to make a name for their incarnation, the Kings of Leon, at another destination. They did it by successfully blending their Dixie style take on southern rock – with a

touch of the blues – to create a unique revivalist sound that oddly enough took England by storm while the U.S. just sat back and shrugged its collective shoulders.

Fast forward to 2014 and the Kings are still superstars in the United Kingdom. They even added Australia and New Zealand to the crown jewels they already own. As for the other ‘United’ country, it would take the Followill’s a bit longer ENIGMA

Dallas Parties Down On Big Easy Rout of Saints The Dallas Cowboys put their division foes on notice Sunday night that the NFC East won’t be decided on the last game of the year as it has the previous three. Whatever mediocrity the team has shown in seasons past was gutted and thrown out the window when ‘The Boys’ put on a 38-17 whooping of their nagging long- time nemesis, the New Orleans Saints, on prime time TV. Dallas hasn’t gotten off to a 3-1 start since the 2008 season. The defense, which has been a sore spot for years, has suddenly found itself in a groove despite the rule changes and lack of familiar face. It truly has become a ‘no name defense’ (coined by Cowboy coaching legend Tom Landry to describe the 1972 Miami Dolphin unit that went undefeated) and that’s okay –

except if your cornerback Morris Ryan knew immediately after that Clairborne (more on that later). drive he wasn’t facing another version of the Cowboy offense his Throughout September, the defense easily clamped down on Cowboys have had a knack of win- last year in a 49-17 blowout. The offense then put an emphatic exclamation point on their first half performance with just over two minutes left to play. Dallas drove the ball 77 yards down field down to the Saints 23-yard line. Ryan, apparently overwhelmed at how well the Cowboys had moved the ball on the ground, called an eight-man blitz in hopes of sacking Romo and forcing a field goal. Instead, the quarterback found Williams near the goal line where he easily outmaneuvered the safety assigned to him for his second touchdown of the game. You would figure that an offense as potent as New Orleans would literally will itself back into the game at the start of the second half. After all, this was the team that had amassed 625 total yards against this team when they met last year en

route to an NFL record 40 first downs. But that was last season. Today’s Saints, who are now 1-8 on the road, could only muster a field goal to start the half. The Cowboys answered that score by sending DeMarco Murray on run after run against the Ryan defense. Romo even got in on the action scampering 21 yards for a first down on the longest carry of his career. The next play Murray broke through for a 28-yard TD, his fifth of the year. Heading into the fourth, the Cowboys had a stunning 31-3 lead that had Vegas oddsmakers in a state of shock and a packed house at AT&T Stadium cheering with delight. It appeared that the Saints might make a game of it as they scored two quick touchdowns in the span of two minutes to make the game a 31-17 contest. The Dallas defense finally clamped down on the Saints foiling a fourth down attempt and giving the offense excellent field position on the New Orleans 39. Romo wasted little time taking advantage of the gift New Orleans gamble had given him. He found Dez Bryant, who drew double coverage the whole night, on a oneon-one situation that he easily exploited into an 18-yard touchdown reception. Once again, Ryan had gambled with an eight-man blitz that Romo made them pay for.

The game was out of hand at that point. Smiles were abundant on the Cowboys sideline with jubilation erupting in team owner Jerry Jones’ suite. Despite the fact the Dallas Cowboys are off to their best start in six years, it is way too early to get excited about this team until they finish their next five-game stretch that includes four home games and a visit to Super Bowl champs Seattle. The very fact that Dallas is now relying more on the run game instead of Romo’s 100 million dollar arm is a very telling sign that this team’s mediocrity is in the rearview mirror. And maybe, just maybe, the predictable December swoon that always dooms Dallas won’t rear its ugly. The next few weeks will go a long way in answering that question. Until then, Cowboy fans can relish this one simple fact. This team is not only relevant, but a force to be reckoned with once again. Coow C wbbooy N otes: Well, the secret was bound to get out sooner or later. The Dallas Cowboys have quietly put together one of the youngest and most devastating offensive lines in pro football. This development has transformed this team from a one-dimensional, Tony Romo dependent offense into a well-balanced attack that after ENIGMA

four games. As fans know all too well, there is always an assortment of drama following the Dallas Cowboys both off and on the field. With former Oklahoma running back DeMarco Murray leading the NFL in rushing after week four with 534 yards, owner Jerry Jones has stopped lamenting the loss of overhyped QB Johnny Manziel. He probably is still silently fuming, but the decision to draft the unsexy guard Zack Martin from Notre Dame, to start at right guard has finished the transformation of the Dallas offensive line. Offensive coordinator Scott Lineham’s determined game plan of a balanced attack of run more than throw has not only lightened the load on the Romo, but given him the courage to actually scramble when the field is open to him. Defensive coordinator Rob Marinelli’s game plans have also directly benefitted by the Cowboys grinding offense that routinely is driving the ball down the field for several minutes per scoring drive. What a difference one year and a change in coordinators on both sides of the ball makes. It’s also another reason Jerry should keep his mouth shut and let other’s make the football decisions, particularly when it comes to the draft. on draft day to address the offensive line needs with their first round picks the past four years over Jones obvious objections. They relented one time with Morris Clairborne in the 2012 draft as Jones declared him the Cowboys’ top-graded cornerback draft prospect since Deion Sanders and made the bold move to trade up for him. He was demoted to secondstring last week when the decision to start Orlando Scandrick was announced. Claiborne reacted to the news by walking out of the team’s facility and not returning until the following day. The LSU product had a game-sealing pick of an overthrown pass in the team’s win over the St. Louis Rams. It didn’t erase the fact he was torched all day long by the Rams third-string QB who had been forced into the starting job. Clairborne is regressing instead of improving and proving to be quite injury-prone as well. The Jerry Jones prophecy that ‘Mo’ was going to be a perennial Pro Bowl player (he is ranked 91 by grading organization) is another reason why the team owner and GM should not be allowed to wheel and deal with team draft picks in the first round ever again.

In the meantime Whisenhunt brought in Charlie Whitehurst as a veteran backup and drafted LSU standout Zach Mettenberger as a possible heir apparent. Of course the issue for years in Tennessee is the offensive line. Dating back to the Steve McNair days the line has been suspect when it came to pass protection. A strong running game – Eddie George and most recently Chris Johnson have been able to disguise flaws in the line with their ability to break tackles and outrun defenders. The passing game has always been suspect. Blame was thrown at the receivers – which they deserved, but no quarterback has had enough times to let

make any comment on the status of Locker or when he would be ready to play again – or if he would. To say the team as a whole was underachieving might not be a stretch. “Well, in my expectations they are, we are, not them, we are. We are underachieving. I believe that we are a better football team than what we’ve shown. You know, that’s a hard thing to say because there’s not a lot of evidence to back that up,” Whisenhunt said. “We struggled a little bit offensively. We had a couple of early turnovers. I don’t think I played well enough to win the game. We shot ourselves in the foot a little bit. They are a good football team and we got behind and just couldn’t chip away and get back. We just didn’t get enough plays,” Whitehurst said about his start against the Colts.

Like Locker he was relatively unimpressive – not bad mind you, but the passing game lacked execution and once again relied on the running game and quite frankly an nonexistent defense that saw Luck “It’s really hard to say right have his best game of the seanow. completing them, so he’s a talented player. I recognize that. We did a good job against their run game. We had some penalties come up in the pass game where we’ve got to continue to work. I did see a couple of times today when we made better plays without having penalties down the field, which is something we’ve got to continue to work on, but I know it’s hard for me to stand up here and say we’re going to get better after what we’ve done the past two weeks, but we are, and I think that we’ve got the guys to do it,” said Whisenhunt. Frustration is mounting in the Titan locker room but to what degree has yet to be determined. “I don’t even know, I can’t even put my finger on that. I am just going out there grinding every day. We as a team are going out there grinding. We are obviously frustrated but we can’t, I don’t know, we are not winning, we are losing. That is the frustration. We got to put some wins up and we got to stop all the little things that are killing us and we have to stay on the details,” said wide receiver Kendall Wright. The Titans return home Sunday as they face the Cleveland Browns. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm and will be aired on CBS.

Vikings Feast on Falcon’s Lack of Defense The Atlanta Falcons offensive and defensive lines Sunday were reminiscent of an old ear movie as he visiting Falcons lost to the Minnesota Vikings 41-28. The offensive line looked like something out of a MASH unit as three linemen were knocked out of the game with their prognosis still up in the air. As the all of a sudden injury-prone Falcons saw their casualties begin to pile up in the second half they were resorted to using tight end Levine Toilolo at righ tackle.

The one bright spot about that was at least the second year tight end didn’t have an opportunity to drop another Matt Ryan pass. The defensive line Sunday was AWOL. If they were actual soldiers they would be brought up on court marshal charges of desertion. The Vikings, underdogs coming into the game were without the league’s top rusher Adrian Peterson and were starting a rookie quarterback.

ing the script as their running game was renewed and rookie Teddy Bridgewater took a page out of Matt Ryan’s rookie playbook as he threw for 317 yards, no turnovers and running for one score, while the Viking offense compiled four rushing touchdowns on the day. By the half the Vikings has already compiled 351 yards on offense and when everything was said and done a total of 558.

or for that matter put much pressure on the quarterback. Late in the fourth quarter Bridgewater had to leave the game with a sprained ankle after running the ball down to the Falcon one-yard line. The Vikings were able to convert on fourth down on the next play and then Bridgewater threw a crisp pass for a twopoint conversion to give the Vikings a 35-28 lead.

Devin Hester exploded on a 36-yard catch and run and then the Falcons took the lead on a 48-yard run by Antone Smith. Defense could not hold and before you knew it the Falcons were trailing again. And as the offensive linemen started falling one by one the Viking defense had no trouble turning up the heat on Ryan and the offense. “I think during the game you try and do the best you can. I have never, in my six plus seasons of playing, been in this situation, where tight ends are in there trying to play offensive tackle,” said Ryan.
