DO SOMETHING Macy Gray parlayed an utterly unique voice and an outlandish sense of style into R&B stardom at the turn of the millennium, appealing to audiences of all colors in search of a fresh alternative to mainstream soul. Gray's raspy growl attracted a lot of attention, much to her surprise early on. With a singing style heavily influenced by Billie Holiday and Betty Davis she has been nominated for five Grammys, winning one. She performs Tuesday at City Winery Nashville and the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta on Wednesday.

THE WHOLE LOVE Wilco is a critically acclaimed Chicago band initially connected to the No Depression neo-country scene, later emerging as an experimental-pop powerhouse. Celebrating 20 years they are touring and will be performing Wednesday at the Ryman Auditorium. ENIGMA

The death of Thomas Eric Duncan in Dallas and the subsequent Ebola diagnosis of Nina Pham, a 26-year-old nurse who had been treating Duncan at Presbyterian Hospital, has left no doubt that the virulent disease is loose on U.S. soil... ...Prior to Duncan’s death, Dr. Kent Bently and Nancy Writebol had both been successfully treated after contracting Ebola while working in west Africa. Both were taken to Atlanta’s Emory Medical Center, where they received experimental treatments that rendered them non-contagious. Murthy committed the seemingly unpardonable sin of calling gun violence a “health care issue” in a 2012 tweet (send two months before the Sandy Hook massacre). MONEY MANAGEMENT

WE CAN BORROW MORE NOW THAT INTEREST RATES ARE AT RECORD LOW! IS THIS A GOOD THING OR A BAD THING? There's no doubt interest rates play a significant role when a lender assesses one's affordability to repay a loan. This simply means the lower the interest rate the more you can borrow. At such a historically low cash rate with lenders aggressively continuing to lower their interest rates, not only more & more potential borrowers' applications are being accepted, but also people with existing mortgages are now qualified to borrow even more money. Either way, that's - precisely - what banks are targeting for. Don't get me wrong. I'm not opposing borrowing. Ironically I'm a mortgage broker who makes a living by helping people to borrow! In fact, this is amazing news for someone like Tim & Bec who have been longing to buy their first home and

thankfully, at an affordable interest rate, not to mention the 50% stamp duty reduction taking effect as of 1 September 2014 there has never been a better time for these guys to fulfill their Australian dream. Great news also for John & Jenny who managed to knock down their home loan over the years, build up plenty of equity in their home and now they're looking to - kind of - harness their equity to invest in a property, or three, as a road map to their retirement. That is fair enough given that Mr Jo Hockey seems to be adamant to work them to do death. With an improved borrowing capacity John & Jenny are now able to borrow funds to help them achieve their retirement plan.

but still could take a great advantage of their improved borrowing capacity without extending their borrowing, by simply shopping around for a cheaper home loan among hundreds of hungry lenders who are prepared to do whatever it takes to pinch new businesses from other lenders. By doing this, these people could potentially save themselves hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. How good is that!

On the "not so good" side of things however, is what someone like Darren is about to do. Daza was over the moon when the bank told him they can and will top up his home loan so he could finally add a sparkling new $70k red SSV Commodore to his collection. Whilst there's absolutely nothing wrong with Other people may not want to red SSV Commodores or with buy an investment property Daza or even with the bank,

combining the three elements together can form a hazardous medium that would eventually cause undesirable ramifications which would essentially have a negative impact on Daza's financial position. Sometimes we fail to understand that if the bank thinks we could borrow $70k, it doesn't necessarily mean we have to borrow the $70k. Anyway... the moral of all this is; Now that we can borrow a lot more than before, let's borrow wisely for a justified need, not extravagantly for an inexcusable want. And yes, unless you have $70k in cash, a red SSV Commodore is listed under "inexcusable wants".

NEWRY, Maine (UPI) Organizers of the North American Wife Carrying Championship in Maine said the winner will receive their wife’s weight in beer and five times her weight in cash. The organizers announced the Oct. 11 competition at the Sunday River Resort in Newry will feature a 278-yard obstacle course and the fastest finisher will receive

The event will also offer prizes for the team with the greatest combined weight and the spousal pairing with the greatest combined age. QUEENSTOWN, New Zealand - A “birthday treat” lap dance went spectacularly wrong for a man who had to enlist the help of eight firefighters to bust him out of handcuffs. The man was celebrating his birthday with a lap dance at a private residence in Queenstown, New Zealand when he got trapped in handcuffs. The female dancer and others tried to free him but failed, so they called emergency around 12:30 a.m. Volunteer fire brigade senior firefighter Paul Halsted, who eventually freed the man from his cuff hold, said the group met firefighters at the station after trying both the police station and medical centre. “There was nobody there. We

were all in bed so they called 111 to try to get some help.” Just to make sure things stayed nice and discreet to avoid any embarrassment, a total of eight firefighters were roused to attend the situation. Halsted said one of the cuffs had tightened around the man’s wrist and previous attempts to get it off had tightened it further. Luckily for the birthday gang, Halsted managed to pry it apart and release the locking mechanism. “They weren’t police handcuffs, there was no substantial locking mechanism. I guess you’d describe them as recreational.” Fellow senior firefighter Nathan Clark described it as “a birthday treat gone wrong”.

Firefighters, who used a hydraulic spreader and a crowbar to get into the box, said the boy was “amazingly brave” and greeted them with a smile once they got the box open. WUHAN, China (UPI) - A Chinese military reserve training session was interrupted when the reservists were told to sit down and more than 100 pairs of pants ripped simultaneously. Chinese media reports indicate about 4,500 reservists were participating in the training session Sept. 8 at a university in Hubei province and the group was instructed to sit in unison, leading more than 100 reservists to tear their pants in unison. The tearing was accompanied by an audible ripping sound, witnesses said. The pants, standard issue camouflage for the Chinese military, cost about $15 each, considered a high price for pants in China. The incident has been raising questions in Chinese media about the country’s military’s combat-readiness if their pants are prone to failure.

BRUNN AM GEBIRGE, Austria (UPI) - Firefighters in Austria said they freed a 3-year-old boy who became locked in a large postal box during a game of hide-and-seek. The Modling Fire Department said the boy was visiting a residential complex in Brunn am Gebirge with his parents Monday and he chose the mailbox as a hiding spot for a game of hide-andseek. should seek the attention of a doctor. If your erection lasts more than 17 hours you are in for some real unpleasantness. Brit Jason Garnett woke up one morning with the unwelcomed turgidity, but like most men who wake up in this condition he thought it would soon go away by itself. It didn’t. As the hours passed he tried various things including exercise and an ice bath before he finally agreed to be taken to the hospital. “Ending up in hospital with a permanent erection was probably the most embarrassing day of my life,” Garnett said, but the embarrassment was going to be the least of his worries. Doctors first tried to slow Garnett’s blood flow by injecting his penis 24 times. “Seeing them stab my penis with a needle was a horrible experience - like something out of a horror film.” But that didn’t work so they had to come up with another way of making the 23-year-old’s penis go down. In a last desperate attempt doctors removed two pints of blood from his penis. This final procedure worked. “The pain was 10 out of 10,” Garnett commented. Adding that after its ordeal, his penis is “a bit black and blue.”

1199 5511 18-year-old Richard Penniman, who is already using the stage name Little Richard, makes his first recordings for RCA Camden at the studios of Atlanta radio station WGST. His early attempts imitated the Gospel style of late-1940s Jump Blues artist Billy Wright who was a friend that set him up with the opportunity to record.

Station employee Aubrey Brown tries to help his boss, but is no match for Presley. After police are called, Hopper and Brown are charged with assault and are eventually fined $25 and $15 respectively. 1199 5577 On tour in Sydney, Australia, Little Richard denounces Rock ‘n’ Roll, saying “If you want to live for the Lord, you can’t take Rock and Roll too. God doesn’t like it.” When his sax player, Clifford Burks, dares Richard to prove his “faith in God,” Little Richard tosses four diamond rings, valued at $8,000, into Sydney’s Hunter River and soon after launches a Gospel career. Five years later, he would switch back to Rock ‘n’ Roll.

But hiring a choreographer is merely step one. Cowboys Silence Seattle At Home

It was supposed to a game that would finally put the upstart Dallas Cowboys in their proper place. This event was going to be THE contest that would expose all the ugly flaws of America’s Team and mercifully put an end to the whirlwind expectations that had been fueled by their unexpected fourgame win streak. Yeah, the Seahawks and their boisterous fan base would send a loud and clear message to the NFL that all roads to the Super Bowl still had to go through Seattle. Funny thing is no one explained this to the Cowboys. Though the final score said elsewise, Dallas thoroughly dominated head coach Pete Carroll’s team in their 30-23 victory. It was a resounding thump

that left not only the Seahawks, but the city of Seattle itself, scratching their collective heads wondering what on earth had just happened to the defending champs. Going into this game, Seattle had gone 19-1 at home since the Russell Wilson era at quarterback began in the 2012 season. During that period, their facility has become the loudest stadium in the NFL for opposing teams to contend with. Their rabid fan base, known as the “12th Man”, has become a major competitive asset for the Seahawks during this remarkable stretch. Opponents have to game plan using a silent count because of the noise. Almost all preparation has been to no avail. This version of the Dallas Cowboys, however, is a different animal from years past. They have ENIGMA

been taking the league by surprise week after week. This time, the Seahawks saw the phenomenon up close and personal. Six minutes into the contest, it looked like all of Dallas’ game day preparation was for naught. Seattle had marched down the field on the opening drive, and thanks to Jermaine Kearse’s 53-yard catch and run, were knocking at the Cowboys door. The defense finally gathered itself together enough to stop the attack and force a field goal. Dallas, which has fallen into a nasty habit of fumbling their opening drives away, couldn’t get anything started and were a quick three and out. Adjusting to the intense noise was a factor. The Seattle coaching staff took advan-

tage of the loud conditions by sending safety Doug Baldwin – who left his outside blocking assignment on a Cowboy player – to go after punter Chris Jones. He ran in uncontested and easily blocked the punt. Linebacker Mike Morgan picked up the ball and returned it 25 yards for a score. It was time for Dallas to get its act together. First-year offensive coordinator Scott Linehan has demonstrated time and time again that he doesn’t panic in the face of adversity, even if it is against the NFL’s top-ranked rushing defense. Regardless of the score, he prefers to grind defenses into the ground with a time consuming drive that features a run first, throw second mentality. Quarterback Tony Romo has been

implementing the philosophy with deadly precision the past few weeks. In the second quarter, he effectively executed the strategy on the Seahawks top-ranked defense by stringing together a 9play, 4:39 drive that ended with 2yard touchdown toss to tight end Gavin Escobar. The score, which featured a 38-yard burst up the middle by Cowboy backup Joseph Randall, stunned the ‘Hawks and their fans. On the ensuing kickoff, Percy Hawkins put Seattle in excellent field position with a 42-yard return. The Cowboy defense made sure the effort went nowhere and forced a punt. Dallas then proceeded to take over the second quarter. Romo methodically drove the offense toward the Seattle end zone in a brilliant 15-play 71-yard march that consumed 9:45 off the clock. The drive ended with a Dan Bailey 42-yard field goal that tied the game. Dallas’ defense once again pressured Wilson out of the pocket to force short throws that went nowhere, or scrambles that came up short. The Cowboys forced another punt and received the ball on their 20. Romo once again went on cruise control and orchestrated a meticulous 10-play drive that ended 2:48 seconds after it began with tight end Jason Witten standing in the end zone for a 17-10 lead. It was the 900th reception of this All-Pro tight end’s career whose only member is future Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez. The 12th Man had all but left the building as the half ended. Seattle started out the third quarter in ‘beast’ mode, first on defense and then offense. The defense, which was hell bent on stopping DeMarco Murray and ending his streak, stopped the Cowboys offense cold. Seahawk running back Marshawn Lynch finally showed up and broke through the “Big D” for 32 yards. However, like previous efforts, this was a onehighlight drive that stalled out. The disappointment wouldn’t last long. The usually reliable Dwayne Harris fumbled the ensuing punt and Seattle recovered the ball on the Cowboy 14. Two plays later Wilson scored from nine yards out to tie the score. The hometown crowd finally had something to cheer about as the decibel levels within the confines of CenturyLink Field reached ear-crushing levels. The pitch got even higher when Romo fumbled the snap from center on the teams next possession. You can

blame the crowd noise on the miscommunication between center Frederickson and Romo for the miscue. The Seahawks proceeded to score their 17th point off a Dallas mistake as kicker Steven Hauschka connected from 33 yards out for a 20-17 advantage. It was time for Dallas to get its act together heading into the fourth quarter. It took a little over two minutes and a spectacular 46-yard reception by Terrance Williams to get the Cowboys into field goal position – even if it was from 56 yards out. The most accurate kicker in NFL history drilled the longest attempt of his career to knot the score up. On Seattle’s next drive, the NFL’s fifth leading kicker of alltime, Hauschka, put the Seahawks back on top with another field goal.

The next drive by the Cowboys was their finest. Facing a third down and 20 situations on their own 28, Romo managed to evade the rush and connect with Williams on a breathtaking 23-yard reception. The catch was so improbable that Seahawks coach Pete Carroll threw a red flag to challenge the ruling on the field. The call stood and the Dallas drive stayed alive. It was now DeMarco Murray time. The Seattle defense had done a remarkable job bottling up Murray up to this point. With a little more than five minutes left in the game, the star back had carried the ball 26 times for 67 yards. His streak of consecutive 100-yard games to start the season was in serious jeopardy of ending at five. That all changed after Williams reception. Murray finally broke through the Seattle line for a 26-yard gain. He followed that up with a six-yard ENIGMA

scamper. The running back then broke through on his third consecutive carry to score from 15 yards out. His sixth TD of the season placed his name alongside the immortal Jim Brown. A thoroughly stunned Seattle defense, which previously had given up only 62 yards per game on the ground, stood in collective silence. Dallas would tack on another Dan Bailey field goal to seal the outcome. The final score was no reflection of the game itself. The Dallas Cowboys put on a clinic on how to recover from your own mistakes. The team dominated the defending champs on both sides of the ball as it neutralized Seattle’s triple threat – quarterback Russell Wilson, running back Marshawn Lynch and receiver Percy Harvin. Each player was allowed one highlight for the game – Russell a 9-yard touchdown

run, Lynch a 32-yard scamper and Harvin a 46-yard kickoff return – then were totally shut down after that. Pete Carroll and his staff – save the one call that led to a blocked punt that was returned for a score – were totally outcoached throughout the contest. Put this one in the record books. Coow C wbbooyy N Nootteess – – After the game, Pete Carroll still couldn’t wrap his head around the fact the Cowboys had managed 10 first downs in 17 attempts. He called it the key stat of the game, forgetting that the Dallas offense ran 70 offensive plays to Seattle’s 46 and controlled the ball for nearly 38 minutes. The Cowboys 162 yards gained on the ground also had something to do with it. Going into the game, the Cowboys defense was leading the league with the dubious distinction of giving up 6.5 yards per play. They atoned for their glaring sin by lim-

iting Seattle to just 206 yards of total offense. Outside of a 32-yard scamper, Lynch was had a paltry 29 yards on nine carries. Harvin had three catches that netted zero yards. As for Wilson, he was simply befuddled by the multitude of schemes defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli came up with to shut down his offense. Outside of a 53yard reception by Jermaine Kearse on the opening drive, the University of Wisconsin product was 13 of 27 for 73 yards. (The previous week, Wilson had rushed for a career-high 122 yards and completed 18 of 24 attempts for 201 yards). D eMar co Mu rr ay broke the 100D yard mark with a 15-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter. With that run, he joins Jim Brown as the only running back with at least 100 rushing yards in each of their first six games of the season. DeMarco has the chance to break the 56-year old record at home against the New York Giants. Topping the triple digit rushing mark against Seattle is no small feat. Prior to this contest, Seattle was allowing an average of just 62.2 rushing yards per game to opponents, the best mark in the league. They had only allowed one touchdown on the ground, second best in the NFL. D al las r unni ng back Joseph Randall D was arrested a day after the Cowboys returned from Seattle for shoplifting at a Dillard’s Department store when he was caught taking cologne and men’s underwear without paying for it. The former Oklahoma State player, in the second year of a four-year, $2.3 million rookie contract with a base salary of $495,000 this season, was caught on video placing items later identified as a ‘’tester’’ bottle of Gucci Guilty Black cologne and a two-pack of Polo underwear into a Dillard’s bag after making a purchase at the store at Stonebriar Centre in Frisco, TX about 30 miles north of Dallas. The 22-year-old was stopped by security in the parking lot, returned to the store and the items were recovered. The cost of the underwear and cologne was $123.50 before sales tax. He later told a police officer that when he saw the ‘’old guy,’’ referring to the security guard, he thought to himself, ‘’All right, y’all got me.’’

Titans Avoid Deja Vu

The Titans avoided a last minute meltdown barely Sunday as they held on to beat the still winless Jacksonville Jaguars in the comfortable confines of LP Field 16-14.

make sure I didn’t just tip the ball. So when I saw it fall, I’m thinking ‘Thank you, God. Thank you, Jesus.’ It felt great. Driving deep into Tennessee territory he was picked off at the Titan 16 by Blindi Wreh-Wislon who returned it to midfield. Tennessee capitalized on the turnover and Succop was able to extend the lead to 16-7 seconds into the final quarter. The teams slugged it out until it got interesting in the final moments. With 2:43 remaining the Jaguars took over on their 17. Bortles completes next three passes to get Jacksonville deep into Tennessee territory. Borltes completed one more pass and was sacked twice before throwing his first incomplete pass of the drive with 50 seconds remaining. With 37 seconds remaining he hit Harbor across the middle from 20 yards out for the score to draw within two and then going for the onside kick.

I wish he would have connected on the one to Delanie (Walker) early because that would have been a huge play for us. He did a good job. He bought time in the pocket at times. We didn’t protect him as well as we need to. He ran it, he managed the offense and did a good job,” said coach Ken Whisenhunt. If you didn’t know any better you would have thought that the Jaguars won this game. They outgained the Titans 379 to 290, almost two times more first downs (27-14) and won 31:07 to 28:53 but lost the takeaway battle losing a

fumble and having one pass intercepted. The Titans offense was stellar most of the game as they sacked Bortles six times. Whitehurst was sacked three times by the Jaguars. “It came down to the wire. Like I’ve said before, you never know what play it’s going to be to get the win. That blocked field goal was unbelievable. We have to pick each other up. Offense may be slacking here, so defense has to step it up. Defense slacking, special teams (have to step up). But we had each other’s back today, and that was the main thing in this ENIGMA

“It was just exciting. It’s a situation that you walk through all the time in practice and you get reps at. You know what yard-line you have to get to to give your kicker a chance. The only one that didn’t drop a ball thrown to him was Antone Smith. Smith once again was the highlight of the game – and for the most part of the season to date for Atlanta. Trailing 13-3 coming out in the second half the Falcons took the kickoff. Ryan hit Smith in the flat and once he turned the corner it was all over as he scored from 41 yards to make the score 13-10. After tying the score in the third quarter it was as if the offense took the rest of the game off. It was hard to watch the offense the entire game. If it wasn’t for Smith I don’t know if Atlanta would of found the end zone Sunday. The lack of offense was obvious in the second half as the Falcons defense was fortunate to keep the Bears scoring to only14 points.

Smith serving double duty even got the tackle on special teams on the ensuing kickoff. “It’s the will to win. I want to do whatever I need to do to help this team win. If I have to go out there and cover kicks, that’s fine. I’ve been doing it since I’ve been here, so I take pride in that as well. When I go out there, I want to make the tackle. I want to be disruptive; that’s all I try and do,” he said. “In terms of the ball game, we put ourselves in some tough situaAnother glaring discrepancy tions, especially early on in the Sunday was the supposed reunion first half of the game. football game; when you don’t score in the fourth quarter, it’s tough to win, especially the way this game went,” said Falcons coach Mike Smith. The Falcons are gone from the Dome until the end of November. Their lone home game in the next couple of weeks is actually in London when they face the Detroit Lions. For right now they’ve got to worry about the next opponent, the Baltimore Ravens. “In this League, everything changes. It is a weekby-week thing, so counting us out of the race means you all do not know football. We still have a lot of games left to play. We still have a lot of faith in ourselves. All we have to do is pick one another up, get back up, and get ready for the Ravens next week,” said defensive end Jonathan Massaquoi. The Falcons travel to Baltimore Sunday to take on the Ravens. Kickoff is 1pm and will be aired on Foc.
