LIVES INTERRUPTED: Some End of Life Occurances, Some Death Experiences From A Police Perspective Regular Enigma readers may remember I was a Police Officer (cop), for almost 30 years with the Chattanooga Police Department. I say almost because it was 29 years and 10 months and some people want you to be exact. Recently I was “lunching” with some retirees and the subject of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome came up. We agreed that back in the day we (police officers of our generation) were just expected to deal with stress caused by seeing incidents like child, domestic or elderly abuse, rape and other physical violence and in particular death whether it was caused by violence or not. This discussion ‘triggered” several memories where I encountered death in more “natural” occurrences and other incidents where it was caused by violence.

Chattanooga Police Department (C.P.D.) I unfortunately either answered calls where there was a death or was on the scene when a

Officer) when we received a call of a deceased young male who had been found under a tree. When we arrived there were the usual

leaned up against the tree as if was just taking a nap. I was struck by how peaceful and serene the scene looked. We secured the scene and I gathered information about the witnesses and our victim. We did not have to make the death notification. It was determined that lightning had struck the tree and traveled down where the unfortunate boy had attempted to shelter during a storm. Up to that point in my life I had seen a few people in death but at funeral homes and these were to me “old people”. I had never seen a young person dead. I still remember that call 35 years later.

The next time I dealt with death was not so traumatic. I received a violent death occurred. The first onlookers and an ambulance .The call of an elderly person who had one was when I was a “rookie” in young boy was in a sitting position apparently succumbed to natural Patrol division. causes. The elderly male had been residing in an apartment senior center and someone there had found him. The police were needed to stay with the body and secure the apartment until funeral home personnel arrived. I was left alone in this silent apartment with the poor dead soul. He was slumped up against the kitchen stove with a pan of fresh baked orange sweet rolls sitting on the stove I felt remorse that this poor soul had not been able to enjoy this last treat prior to his passing on. Another call I received while in patrol division was the discovery of a body in a wooded area. It was believed to be a suicide. I responded and walked down a slim roadway or paved path to a clearing in the woods. There I found a victim who had apparently used a shotgun to end their life. The victim had a huge head wound and it was a very bloody, messy scene. I had the dispatcher notify my supervisor, Major Crimes personnel and the Medical Examiner’s office. After the responding detective and the medical examiner got on the scene I was allowed to “get back into service”. There was no talk of my being offered counseling or allowed to “decompress” after a call like that. This was the tough old days and we were just expected to deal with it (mentally) and we did. I answered a call one day right as our shift was going out. I raced to get to the scene of a bicyclist struck by a vehicle on Suck Creek Road. The rider, a teacher at a nearby school I was informed, died at the scene. I felt very sad at the loss of this young life. The driver of the car stated the Western sun had blinded her to the rider and she never saw him. He was riding legally with his back to traffic. This reinforced my personal rule to always ride a bicycle or walk facing traffic. Sometimes there is indignity in death and you hope you are spared such a fate. I had to respond to one deceased person call where the unfortunate person had apparently suffered a fatal heart attack while bending over the toilet. The deceased was slumped with his

head hanging over the toilet bowl rim. I felt sorry for him being viewed in this indignant position. This was a death by “apparent natural causes” call and not a crime scene. I followed the rules and did not disturb the body but wonder if perhaps I should have. One kind of “freaky’ death call I answered was where an elderly man had not been seen by his neighbors for several days and there was no answer at his door. The address was an apartment in a seedy looking area near the old Engel baseball stadium. It looked like perhaps an old business or very large home had been cut up into apartments. The apartments were not well marked and I knocked on one door. The occupant there referred me to the apartment of the missing neighbor and related that he had not seen the elderly occupant of that apartment for about a week and that the missing neighbor never went anywhere. He advised it was very odd that he had not been at least on the porch recently. When I went next door I could see an indication things might not be well as the mailbox hanging beside the door was overflowing. I knocked on the door super hard in my best ‘the police are here’ knock and yelled “Chattanooga Police Department” in my most authoritative command voice. There was no answer. I notified a supervisor and requested a backup officer. When the backup officer arrived we pounded on the door and window to no avail. I advised our supervisor on what we had and he advised to force entry if we needed to. About that time, despite there being no outside breezes, a curtain over the front window blew to the side and I could see what looked like someone in bed in a front room. My back up officer seemed very nervous about the prospect of there being someone dead inside the room. He asked how the curtain moved and I shrugged my shoulders. I wasn’t worried about it yet. I then proceeded to push a flimsy piece of plastic that was in a pane of the door window out of the way so that I could reach the doorknob. A neighbor who had been watching the proceedings decided to tell me “You better be careful. He don’t ENIGMA

like the police. They shot his arm off.” Well good to know. Now my backup seemed to want to call someone else but I thought, “Who are you going to call?” Plus being fairly new I didn’t want to catch any grief from any senior officers listening in to our little drama. I again shouted “Chattanooga Police Department’ but got no response. I reached in and began turning the knob when a light suddenly came on. My partner asked how that happened. It was obvious he wanted to be anywhere but here. Again I had no answer. As the door was open now I again yelled out “Chattanooga Police Department” but again there was no response. I cautiously approached the bed. My backup officer was not happy at all at this point and told me to be careful. I saw no movement from the figure in the bed. I told my backup that I thought the person was gone (meaning deceased). He asked how I knew for sure. I reached for the figure in the bed’s toe. At that point my backup “left the building”. I determined the party was deceased and had been for some time. The fire department

OCTOBER 2019

(it was fire and ambulance at that time) responded with respirators to remove the partially decomposed body. Why we didn’t smell the decomposition I do not know. And why did the curtain move? There was no fan on and the apartment had no central heat and air. I had not moved the plastic on the window when it moved. What made the light come on? There was no motion detectors and just old lamps. A short perhaps? My backup? He got out of police work a few years later. I have related these incidents not out of any morbid sense of entertainment but more hopefully to enlighten or educate the reader as to some of the realities or traumatic incidents police officers may experience. I tried to add some humor with the last story so as to lighten the mood of this article. Honestly I think it served as a kind of catharsis or therapy for me to relate these incidents. I thank you for your time.

A Michigan woman who tried to use a shotgun to “make a point” during a family argument ended up shooting herself in the face. After grabbing the gun, the Fremont Township woman slammed its butt-end onto the floor, causing the gun to go off and fire into her face. When police responded after receiving reports of a gunshot victim, they found the 51-year-old with a facial wound. She reportedly told officers that she wanted to

use the firearm to “make a point.” The woman was taken to St. Mary’s of Michigan in Saginaw and she is expected to make a full recovery. Michigan police will continue to investigate the incident, but no charges have been filed at this time. Point taken. A runaway herd of spotted cows made a late-night visit to a Wisconsin brewery famous for its Spotted Cow beer before being captured. The New Glarus Brewing Co. shared security

camera footage on Facebook showing the 16 Holstein cows that unexpectedly made an appearance in the brewery’s parking lot in the early hours Monday. “Yes, this actually happened — some spotted cows came to visit the home of Spotted Cow!” the post said, referring to its popular Spotted Cow beer. “There were no damages. They ate a bunch of our grass,” reported Drew Cochrane, chief operating officer of New Glarus Brewing Co.. “We had a little cleaning up to do after

they left, it’s fair to say.” The cows were rounded up and safely returned to their owner.

There is a truck stop in Louisiana called Tiger Truck Stop. For years it was famous for exhibiting a tiger named Tony. That’s where the truck stop got its name. But when poor Tony died new laws kept the owners from acquiring another tiger. So they started populating their

parking lot zoo with other exotic animals, like a few South American coatis and a camel named Caspar. It was this truck stop that a Florida truck driver and her husband pulled into recently. The pair travel with their pet dog, and all three of them were interested in seeing the camel. Problems arose when a man began tossing treats inside Caspar’s enclosure, leading the dog to hop the fence to go after them. So the man and his wife decided to crawl underneath the fence, past the sign that said ‘No Trespassing,’ and retrieve the dog from Caspar’s territory themselves. The man started ‘swatting’ at Caspar, trying to push him out of the way while his wife bent down to pick up her pet. That’s when the camel sat on her. Trapped beneath the camel, the woman apparently did the only thing that made sense in the moment.

“I bit his balls to get him off of me, I bit his testicles to get him off of me,” she told police Apparently it worked, but since Caspar weighs over 600 pounds the woman was taken to an area hospital. Deputies cited the unidentified couple for criminal trespassing and for not having their dog on a leash. No serious injuries to the camel were reported. A freak boating accident left a 14-year-old Florida boy with an anchor lodged in his skull, and doctors call his survival story one in a million. “I can’t believe I had an anchor in my head. Like, that’s pretty crazy,” Caleb Bennett said. “My friends now call me the ‘Anchorman’ so that’s kind of cool.” Caleb and his family were fishing on the Manatee River when the accident happened. “As soon as I got my hands on it, I kind of felt what it was, and I realized it was

in my head pretty far. I just stayed calm. I told my friend, ‘Hey, you need to call 911 or I’m going to die,’” Caleb said. He was flown to Johns Hopkins in St. Peterburg where he immediately underwent brain surgery. “I’ve seen arrows, I’ve seen bullets, but I’ve never seen an anchor, number one, and number two, I’ve never seen anybody with an injury like that walk out of the hospital almost completely neurologically intact. That’s one in a million,” said Caleb’s doctor, Luis Rodriguez. Caleb says he eager to pursue a new passion; spearfishing. Authorities in Nebraska said firefighters responded to the third floor of an apartment building to put out a blaze caused by a woman burning love letters from a former lover. The Lincoln Police Department said police and firefighters

responded to an apartment complex in Lincoln on a report of flames on the third floor. Police said there were no injuries, but the fire caused about $4,000 worth of damage. The apartment’s resident, a 19year-old woman, told police she had been burning love letters from her ex and fell asleep with the smoldering remains of the notes on the carpet. The woman said she woke to the smoke detectors in her home sounding. The woman was cited for negligent burning, police said. A California woman who dreamed that she had to swallow her engagement ring to protect it from thieves woke up to find she really had ingested the piece of jewelry. Jenna Evans of San Diego said she had a dream that her fiance, Bobby Howell, told her to swallow her engagement ring to protect it from some “bad guys” on a high speed

train. “When I woke up and it was not on my hand, I knew exactly where it was,” Evans said. “It was in my stomach.” Evans went to Urgent Care the following day, where X-rays confirmed the ring was in her stomach and was unlikely to pass through her digestive system safely on its own. “I was really happy because I don’t know if I can look at it and appreciate it in the same way, if I had to search for it,” Evans said. Doctors determined an upper endoscopy would be the best way to retrieve the ring, which was causing Evans stomach pains. The surgery was successful and the ring was returned to Evans’ finger, but she said she plans to take it off at night from now on. Sounds like someone has some unresolved commitment issues to me.

make it challenging. Like this man did who accomplished the stunt by standing on an inflatable ball. An Idaho man broke a Guinness World Record by standing atop an inflatable Swiss ball and using a sword to slice through 62 kiwi fruits. David Rush, who has broken more than 100 Guinness records to promote STEM education, stood atop the Swiss ball while Jonathan Hannon threw the kiwis into the air. Rush managed to slice through 62 thrown kiwis before falling off the ball just seconds before the end of his one-minute time limit. The attempt, which occurred during filming for the Science of Guinness World Records traveling exhibit, defeated the previous record of 35 sliced kiwis.

A Nassau County deputy stopped the couple after they were nearly struck by a car they cut off. If you’re going to slice through Smelling booze, the deputy 62 kiwis with a sword at least placed both under arrest.

Things took a sordid turn when the arresting deputy noticed the couple had taken their clothes off and were starting to have sex in the back of his patrol car. When deputies opened the car door to intervene, the naked man knocked a deputy to the ground and took off running into the night. Deputies said the woman, 35-year-old Megan Lynn Mondanaro, grew violent as deputies moved her to a different vehicle. She was taken to the ground and later checked out at the hospital. The man, 31year-old Aaron Seth Thomas, was later taken into custody after deputies caught up to him at a nearby Cold Stone Creamery. Deputies said Thomas’ blood alcohol content was .145, which is nearly twice the legal limit in Florida. Both Thomas and Mondanaro were booked into the Nassau County jail on several charges including resisting with violence, unnatural and lascivious act, exposure

of sexual organs, and driving under the influence. A Pennsylvania couple who had $120,000 mistakenly deposited into their bank account face theft charges after allegedly spending the money, police say. Robert and Tiffany Williams of Montoursville, Pennsylvania, bought an SUV, a camper, paid their bills and handed money out to friends after a teller accidentally deposited the cash into their account, state police said in court records. The couple never told the bank, and their account had $1,121 before the mistake, state police said. In June, the bank realized what happened and withdrew the full amount from the couple’s account. They had already spent much of the money and had an overdraft of about $107,000, police said. The couple were arraigned on felony theft charges and released on $25,000 bail.

Wanna Chase A Rainbow Do you feel like you have a black cloud always hanging over your head? As if everyday your life is filled with heartache and pain? Like you take a couple steps forward only to get knocked back double the steps you took forward? Are you always stumbling in the dark and never able to see the light? Is the world constantly raining on your parade?

First, quit whining and stop feeling sorry for yourself. You and only you can change how to deal with the black clouds hanging over your head. Now, in reality, you really only have two options. You can sit where you are; complaining about how pitiful your life is, talking about how the world is so awful to you. Or you can pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and move forward. The first option is easy. However, it also becomes a trap we can not get out of easily. Imagine being stuck in quicksand. Always struggling, never making progress. The problem occurs with the second option. It requires you to change. Hmm, change is a word that most people associate with negative thoughts.

occurs when we never stray from routines. It seems like growing up we all are striving to make it to the same destination... our comfort zone. Unfortunately, that is the worst location we can settle into. We stop growing and learning. We become boring. Worse we become judgmental. We stop trying new things. We allow the word change to paralyze us. Fear has a new breeding ground. We get comfortable. Comfortable is a dangerous place to be in a world that is constantly evolving. One of the most overused phrases in our language “we have always done it this way”. How lame!

and get wet. You have to take action. You will slip and slide through the mud. (But when you do, try to laugh about it and have some fun.) Then, get up and move forward. It may be slow going since now you are covered in mud, but forward progress is still progress. You can’t be afraid of getting your hands wet or dirty. Look for the forward progress in your life. Fear will steal your life right from underneath you if you let it. The hard work is worth getting to the other side. But again, it takes you, taking action. You cannot dream your life into reality. You have to put in the work. The hard work.

What is it about change that scares people so bad? Is it the unknown? Is it fear? Is it fear of being left behind? Do you feel like you aren’t worthy of change? Maybe a little of all the above? I think it is more so because change is hard work. Action from you is required for change to happen. Mocs offense was off to the races. Except for the fact special teams got a little too complacent. The Catamount drive quickly stalled at their own 31 when they went in punt formation. The Mocs looked as if they were thinking punt return and not paying attention to the punter. Caleb Ferguson took the snap and saw nothing but open field in front of him. He ran up the middle and kept going scoring from 69 yards out to make the score 20-14. Ibitokun-Hanks then broke a run for 73 yards for another touchdown. Getting the ball back following an interception with only 45 seconds to go in the half Tiano put on quite a show. After a nice gain by Ford, the senior QB hit Andrew Manning and Tyrin Summers before hitting Nunnelly again, this time for 45 yards to set up a Victor Ulmo 34yard field goal to make it 37-21 at the half. Both teams were off and running in the second half scoring four touchdowns collectively in their first four series. There

The Catamounts put up almost 500 yards of total offense with 423 coming on the ground. It was Chattanooga’s passing game and turnovers that were the difference. Excuses were made that a number of the teams in the championship games did not have fans that “traveled well”. Excuses. road trip to the games. The only other SEC team in the area playing close by was Vanderbilt, and to be honest who watches Vanderbilt? I feel bad for the kids on the field playing the game to a bunch of empty seats not only this week but also almost every home game. People don’t realize what it takes to play football. The sport is way different from just playing catch in the yard or the sandlot games we all played as a kid. There are tons of practice, learning, calculating and recalculating going into getting ready to play a game. Fans only see the end result of all the blood, sweat and tears. They have no idea was goes into getting a team ready and for each player gameday ready. And like a bunch of spoiled brats they boo or ignore the guys or think they could actually do better. All

Homecoming looked like a perfect storm for the Chattanooga Mocs, however. of which is, of course is a joke – a bad one at that. With the win the Mocs improve their record to 2-3 and 1-0 in the Southern Conference. Saturday the Mocs travel to Mercer for another Southern Conference game before a bye week. They return home for one of those “special” Thursday night games on the 17th to play heated conference rival East Tennessee State. A special promotion for the game is called the “White Out”. The Mocs will suit up in all white uniforms and fans are encouraged to dress in white as well. You have no excuses to miss the game since Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama will be playing Saturday of that week and not Thursday like to Mocs.

On Duct Tape An a Prayer ´11

Colorful Stacey Alexander Turns His Hunter S. Thompson-esque Misadventure Into A Very Popular Read on Amazon When my family first move here from New York we moved into the Fairyland community of Lookout Mountain. It was there that I first met a precocious little shit named Stacey Alexander. Stacey and his two older brothers, Clay and Rocky lived across the street from us. When we moved there I

The only trouble is I was painfully shy. I spent many afternoons in our yard kicked and throwing the football around. I think Stacey felt sorry for me or thought my mother was really strict but

than me but he liked the sport as well and from that day forward we started getting into misadventures. Over time he introduced me to the rest of the neighborhood and as they say the rest was history. Being the little fat kid I was the brunt of a number of Stacey’s jokes along with anything else he could pick on me for. you fought back be I verbal or otherwise. The teasing also felt like you belonged. Stacey and I never came close to fisticuffs, if anything our teasing back and forth was our special bond. In seventh grade my family moved to the Tennessee side of the mountain and I lost touch with Stacey and his brothers until a number of years ago. Both older and wiser (depending on who you ask) we quickly bonded again and

talk/text/email each other regularly. Any given day I will get a newsong that he had written and recorded under some pseudonym he comes up with – all dealing with a different style of music. I probably have dozens of his songs dating back before file sharing when he would hand me a CD to check out his latest effort. Since the time we got reacquainted I’ve known him as an entrepreneur, musician, filmmaker and most recently a published author. His newest publication, a book about buying his first airplane, “On Duct Tape and a Prayer” has literally taken off and is his best entry on Amazon to date. The story has a kind of Hunter S. Thompson “Fear And Loathing” feel to it describing the circumstances in buying the plane and having 24 hours to pick it up, driving from Chattanooga to Arizona to get it and fly back home.

handles — testing their viability. I’ve also have a few psychedelic surf songs released under Garage Termites. The Dellbones is my go to handle for some of my classic, straight-forward Stone’s type garage stuff. The Fantastic Spasms is my more modern, new-age punk meets early beat-rock stuff handle. I have four or five more releases coming out soon for that act, ranging from a Nirvana type song to a couple of Kink’s styled songs. Just released a song called “What I’m Screaming” that has been receiving some good feedback from some of my more critical friends. I had released an EP with friend Wendell Feltman a few years back under that handle. It was just something we did quickly. But I thought some of those songs came out strong. They had an edge to them. It was time that we switched gears a little. One song, called “Something You Wanted” has a Fidler type feel to it. I’m throwing out a re release of that track soon. And I’m also putting out a few old early country type tracks out under Johnny T and the Honky Tonks. There’s a track called “Rockin’ All Night at the Puss N Boots Supper Club” which has some pretty good Chuck Berry type guitar on it. And a track called “I Love That Rock n Roll” that has some slide on it. Both have a touch of humor to them. See Dave, I’m still all over the map. Can’t stick with just one genre. I need rubber walls installed in my studio.

To confuse some of my old teachers I had who are still alive, Dave, I found out it’s not the Valedictorian that writes an entertaining book, it’s the class clown. Think about it. I was “most likely to flop.” My mind was always somewhere else in school. I hated nearly every second of it. I loved the people, mind you — the characters especially. But when everybody else was on page 27, I was on a ship fighting pirates in the Black Sea.

Growing up on Lookout Mountain in the ‘70s you needed to see the funny side of life. You needed thick skin, and a keen escape mechanism to deal with the abundant narcism and psychosis that plagued the neighborhood. Seriously Dave, I loved every minute of my childhood. I guess they don’t call me the “Kid” for nothing. I remember you standing across the street holding a football and watching our gang playing tackle in our front yard. Knowing your mom wouldn’t allow you to come over to play in our yard, her intuition was spot on, we would occasionally come over to your yard and play, usually after some convincing on my part, maybe we just needed another body, or

I’d explained to the group that this kid would be alltime-center or whatever else we wanted. I can honestly say that you would do anything we asked. You were the most game kid I ever met. I remember you laughing on the bottom of a pile-on more than once. That’s when I knew I really loved you, man. You never cried when you probably should have. You were tough, Dave, now you know why I like humorous people. They give you the opposite of what you expect. And sometimes they keep you out of trouble. But sometimes they get you into trouble. Being dramatic in those days would get you benched quickly. These days they give out awards for being dramatic. There were more characters in our neighborhood than the back lot of Universal Studios: Hunter VonCannon, Tommy Boone, John Adamson and the Taliaferro boys, just to mention a few ... I had plenty of comic material to

Could have been. But again… when in Rome. The half-life of a average comedy song is a week or two unless you’re Ray Stevens. Well, really a lot of country party songs have humor — some on the dark side. But some fade pretty quickly. It’s how you deliver them I guess. “Your Cheating Heart” versus “Hey Good Looking” are great examples. They’re still holding up fine. What’s funny to me is not to some. But if something is serious it’s usually serious to everyone. But there’s a time and place for both. Someone getting married doesn’t want to listen to “Your Cheating Heart.” But a book or a movie is different. You can have both elements that stand

came from one of the funniest human beings alive. Steve had some demons, God rest his soul, but what a great guy and friend he was. A natural comedian. You know, David, you can’t force your way in to being funny like the fat lady elbowing her way into line at Ryan’s Buffet and All-YouCan-Eat Steakhouse. When I wrote this book. I had nothing. I mean the story was there. But that was not enough on the surface. I did-

n’t know the story was there, really - until I was nearing the end. Then, after writing the last line, I realized I had something. It’s pretty weird. But as a writer you kinda know when you stumble upon something. It’s kind of like telling a story around the campfire ... you’re sipping whiskey, the coyotes are howling, and the story just comes out better than expected. Go figure. You start it and just go with it. And now to see my book being promoted by Amazon in the top 25 audio books under the aeronautical genre is a trip. Just behind Sir Richard Branson and ahead of Eric “Winkle” Brown’s book. Eric Brown was a famous ace and test pilot from World War II. Yep, there I sit with a short,

But there was a problem, Dave. I was in Chattanooga and the plane was in Scottsdale Arizona. But a deal is a deal. I could of flown. Then I decided to call an old friend to see if he wanted to tag alone. Stephen Dyer, also known as “Doc Lock” from talk radio fame, was an old friend of mine. Mark Knopfler’s Walk of Life I am a firm believer that when you decide to see a classic rock artist perform in concert, they should play their most popular hits. After all, with the type of money these acts are charging their fans to see them live, it’s the least they can do. That was my mindset anticipating the arrival on stage of guitarist Mark Knopfler, the genius behind Dire Straits.

immortal beloved “Sultans of Swing” was the unforgivable sin. Or so I thought.

My profane ignorance of the music written under the Mark Knopfler banner, as it turned out, was the ultimate sin. When the former Brit – I say former because the guitarist now speaks without a hint of an accent – retired the Dire Straits You can imagine my utter dismay name in 1996 to go it alone, I literand outright shock that tonight’s ally abandoned him as well. I literally sat in my seat in dumbstruck awe at the music I had just heard. The songs were nothing short of brilliant. Honestly, I sat in total embarrassment as well. I had been totally clueless to Knopfler’s afterlife as a solo artist and there was no excuse for it. Don’t get me wrong, I still wish the guitarist had chosen other Dire Strait songs to perform other than “Once Upon a Time in the West”, “Your Latest Trick” and “On Every ENIGMA

PUZZLE ANSWERS

The ten-piece backing band was beyond exceptional. Every musician on stage was literally a group unto themselves. Almost all backing musicians are literally that. Their job is to dutifully play the music in relative obscurity. That certainly wasn’t the case here.

the platinum sales of his former life actually had made the guitarist uncomfortable. Replacing the Dire Straits billing with his own name was the artist’s means of saying goodbye to all of that. Knopfler’s ‘walk of life’ also allowed him to indulge his love for various musical genres. That was evident by the selection of material he performed for the very appreciative crowd that roared its approval after ever song ended. I discovered that my ignorance of his solo work was more bliss than anything because I was on my own road to discovery about this remarkable guitarist. When you can go to a concert and experience that kind of euphoria, you can’t put any kind of price tag on that.

All ten musicians accompanying a rather subdued Knopfler were sterling multi-instrumentalists whose individual talents added incredible depth and feeling to their boss’s solo material. Even the backing vocals – and lead when called for – seemed right. Again, I kicked myself throughout the entire night for my total lack of appreciation and knowledge of the brilliant solo material unfolding before my eyes. Ah yes, let’s not forget Mr. Mark Knopfler himself. As I stated earlier, he abandoned the group name back in 1996. When you write and compose every single song you can do that. That gutsy move was especially noteworthy considering the significant amount of album sales he lost going out under his own name. As I listened to his easy banter with the crowd between songs, I slowly came to understand that the fame, the lifestyle as well as

As the band left the stage before the night’s encores began, I leaned over and shook the hand of the guy sitting next to me to say thank you. I was not only pleasantly surprised at what I had witnessed, but in awe of the music from one of the world’s most unheralded and overlooked guitarists. Not anymore.
