The Killing of Khashoggi: Will Saudis Get Away With Murder? In case you haven’t been watching the news lately Jamal Khashoggi was a Washington Post journalist who had been critical of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Khashoggi disappeared October 2nd of this year after entering the Saudi consulate in Turkey. Khashoggi was a Saudi citizen who had been living in the United States. He reportedly had gone to the consulate to get paperwork to marry his Turkish fiancée. Khashoggi entered but never left. His fiancée waited outside the consulate for ten hours but Khashoggi never reappeared. She had been told by Khashoggi to call an adviser to the Turkish president if he did not return. Very soon reports were coming out of Turkey that Khashoggi had been killed in the consulate. Turkish intelligence sources claimed they had video of a Saudi “hit team”

members of the Saudi hit team. I am not very well informed on Middle Eastern geopolitics but it looks like Turkey was quick to throw the Saudis “under the bus”. At first the Saudis claimed Khashoggi had left the consulate and claimed they had nothing to hide. As days passed footage and photos emerged of the alleged hit squad deplaning and arriving at the consulate. A photo of a “body double” for Khashoggi was released. The man was dressed in clothes that looked like Khashoggis’ or his actual clothes. Finally the Saudis admitted Khashoggi had been killed but that it had been during a fight. They claimed the murder was due to a “rogue operation”. arriving in Turkey and at the Saudi also reported Khashoggi had been consulate. They also reportedly dismembered and his body parts The government disavowed that had an audiotape of Khashoggi had been taken out by different the Crown Prince, frequently being tortured and killed. referred to as MSB, had any knowledge of or had approved the operation. However several experts offered that the Saudi intelligence agency and Saudi culture does not encourage freethinking. The likelihood of an operation like this being carried out without higher approval, perhaps the highest approval, is extremely unlikely. Eventually the Saudi government arrested eighteen people. Five high-ranking officials were dismissed including MSB’s media chief and the deputy head of the Saudi intelligence service. The Saudi government announced it was taking steps to “restructure the Kingdom’s intelligence services.” Government spokesmen for the Kingdom repeatedly denied that MSB had any knowledge of or had approved the “rogue operation” in any way. On Thursday, October 25 (lost in the coverage of the mail bombs here in the U.S.) Khashoggi’s killing was described as premeditated by the Saudi Attorney General. This marked a significant shift in the Saudi version of events. Will the Saudi government be held accountable? Unfortunately the Saudi aristocracy has a history of getting away with questionable or even downright criminal behavior. In November of 2017 Saudi Crown Prince MSB consolidated power by having eleven princes and numerous government ministers seized. They were confined in the five star hotel, the Ritz-Carlton Riyadh until January 30th 2018. According to an article in the Business Insider. One of these hostages was billionaire Alwaleed bin Talal, the richest man in the Middle East. The Insider article does not mention the hundreds of businessmen who were reportedly “subject to coercion and physical abuse” according to a March 2018 article at nytimes.com .The article also says “17 detainees were hospitalized for physical abuse and one later died in custody with a neck that appeared twisted,..”. This person was a general in the Saudi National guard. .In one attempt to explain what happened to Khashoggi the Saudis had claimed that during a physical confrontation he had been accidentally strangled as the result of a chokehold. Hmm… coincidence?

You decide. Even though these detainees were also held in the Ritz Carlton many surrendered huge sums of money and signed over to government control precious real estate and shares of their companies all outside any clear legal process according to the nytimes.com article. Saudi officials have denied any allegations of abuse and portrayed the Ritz episode as an orderly legal process. Most of the “detainees” were denied attorneys, threatened, and many physically harmed but none is talking about the incident. Even the billionaire bin Tala isn’t speaking. His company declined to make him available for an interview and one associate said, “it is something he wants to forget.” Apparently the richest man in the Middle East is afraid to talk about the ordeal. This incident was covered very little in the U.S. If MSB was capable of this could he be responsible for the death of a very vocal critic of his regime? Many people either don’t know or have forgotten that Osama bin Laden was a Saudi. Bin laden was the co-founder of Al-Qaeda . He was the mastermind and financier of the 2001 destruction of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Osama bin Laden was banned from Saudi in 1992. Osama bin Laden was considered a planner of two U.S. embassy bombings in Kenya and Dar es Salaam in 1998.

Finally I’ll mention the alleged Saudi involvement in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. As recently as 2016 two co-chairmen of the Congressional inquiry into the attacks said the redacted pages of the 911 report refer to evidence of Saudi Arabia’s substantial involvement in the attacks according to an April 8th, 2016 CBS news report. As 15 of the terrorists were Saudi it is hard not to believe there was a connection to if not actual support of the operation. Although there has not been any official U.S. government sanctions or punishments to Saudi Arabia a U.S. court recently ruled people injured in the 911 attacks, the families of those killed and businesses and insurers affected could proceed with lawsuits against Saudi Arabia. This was the result of a Congressional override of a veto by Barack Obama.

Did the Saudis think this murder of a journalist for a U.S. news agency could go unresolved? Perhaps because they have gotten away with so many abuses before they have become presumptuous. Or could it be this really was a “rogue Please realize I am not meaning operation”. Only time will tell what this article to be an indictment will happen in this case. against Saudi Arabia. I am just trying to point out instances where it - Mark Haskins appears the Saudi Government committed offenses but was not held accountable. The gruesome

Former President Bill Clinton, speaking the day before the 911 attacks, claimed “I nearly got him. And I could have killed him.” according to an August 1st 2014 L.A. Times story. Clinton claimed that due to collateral damage he did not have bin Laden killed. According to a February, 16, 2016 Washington Post story bin Laden was not targeted in a desert hunting camp due to the proximity of a United Arab Emirates royal hunting party. The Saudis maintain close relations with the U.A.E. The countries share extensive political and cultural ties. Was Clinton’s decision to not take out bin Laden based on a desire to not offend the Saudi’s? Clinton is not talking. ENIGMA

murder of a journalist who was a resident of the United States and who has children who are U.S. citizens would seem to require some negative actions against Saudi Arabia. So far all the negative response to this act has been by France and Germany who are saying they will enact an arms embargo against Saudi Arabia. What will the U.S. do if anything? Perhaps the bigger question is why the U.S. is hesitant to penalize the Saudis. Is it the importance of the oil the Saudis produce? Is it the strategic position of the country and the U.S. having an ally in this Middle East region? Perhaps a little of both.

The Salisbury Journal’s Rebecca Hudson reports that a 45-year-old man was arrested today after “smashing the case of the Magna Carter with a hammer and trying to destroy it.” Magna Carta 1215 is the best surviving copy of one of Britain’s most influential legal documents, and is on permanent display at Salisbury Cathedral. It is regarded by historians as the foundation of constitutional liberty in the English-speaking world. A spokesman for Salisbury Cathedral said: “We can confirm that at the

end of the afternoon, a man attempted to break into the case which houses Magna Carta in the Cathedral’s Chapter House. He was arrested by police shortly afterwards and taken into custody. We are very relieved that no one was hurt during the incident and that the Magna Carta itself is undamaged.” Firefighters in California said a man house-sitting for his parents tried to use a blowtorch to kill some dangerous spiders and set the home on fire. The Fresno Fire Department said firefighters responded to reports of a house

fire in the Woodward Lake housing development. Firefighters said the man who made the call escaped the house safely. He told firefighters he had found some black widow spiders in the house and had been trying to kill them with a blowtorch when he sparked the blaze. No injuries were reported from the fire, which damaged the second story of the home and the attic. Arizona’s Tucson Fire Department responded to a similar incident in October 2017. The department said a man had been attempting to use a propane torch to kill some spiders under his family’s mobile home when the structure caught fire.

A man called police for help, saying the woman tried to bite off his penis during sex with him and another man. Police in South Carolina say a naked woman tried to bite off a man’s genitals and then rushed on all fours at responding officers, who shocked her with a stun gun. Hananan Police Chief Dennis Turner says officers shocked the bloody woman with a stun gun, then used an overdose-fighting drug to revive her. Officers were told she was high on heroin and methamphetamine. “Honestly, it’s one of the

most disturbing videos, body cam videos, I have seen in my career. It honestly reminded something you would see off of a horror movie,” Turner said. The woman was hospitalized; charges are pending. Some people dream of getting married at the Eiffel Tower, or at the foot of Niagara Falls. This couple wanted to get married in the middle of a marathon. Whitney Black, who donned a veil with her running clothes, and Steven Phillips, who wore a shirt with a tuxedo print, stopped at the 13.1 mile marker of the 26.2-mile Detroit Free Press/Chemical Bank Marathon for a quick 10-minute wedding. The couple said they kept the ceremony short so their muscles wouldn’t get cold before finishing the race. The race was Black’s first marathon and Phillips’ 14th marathon. Black took up running March 2017, years after a snowmobiling accident left her requiring 20 surgeries and years of physical therapy to relearn how to walk. “So not only did Whitney run her first marathon, but we got married,” Phillips told the Detroit

Free Press. Plans are continuing to launch a new Titanic. A replica of the infamous ship dubbed the Titanic II is set to make its first voyage in 2022, thanks to Australian billionaire Clive Palmer, who’s fronting a group called Blue Star Line. Blue Star Line is trying to create an authentic Titanic experience, providing passengers with a ship that has the same interiors and cabin layout as the original vessel, while adding modern safety procedures and 21st century technology. It will welcome 2,400 passengers and 900 crew members, which is almost the exact same number on board the boat that sank in 1912. The replica project was originally announced in 2012, with a cruise from Dubai planned for 2018. Palmer told Cruise Arabia & Africa Online earlier this month that the new launch date for the new boat will be in 2022, which is 110 years after the original. He said the plan is for ship to sail from Dubai to Southampton, where it will begin its Southampton-New York runs. More than 1,500 people died when

Oh No! Look Who’s 4-0! Figgy’s Reaches A Milestone As Ferris Bueller famously said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.” With 2018 coming to a close in another

Figgy’s began in 1978 by Jeff Davenport, whose family’s name is synonymous with Krystal and Central Park. “He got the name “Figgy” from his aunt who told him to quit fidgeting around when he was a kid and fidgety kid became figgy and that was his nickname,” says Jackson. The popular sandwich shop with many well-known and loved sandwiches began at the corner of 8th and Market Street. It was originally sold to one of the Chapins of Rock City fame in 1993 and five years later, whose family is Jackson Bakery purchased the business. In the early 2000s he moved the busi-

ness from its original location to 805 Chestnut, where he called home until the end of May. With all the redevelopment on that end of Chestnut as well as Pine Street behind him Figgy’s sound themselves odd man out in the plans for the block now owned DeFoor brothers of New York. Figgy’s didn’t fit in with the developer’s vision for the 800 block of Chestnut and Jackson was offered new space two blocks down from his old landlord. The build out took nearly two months but was well worth the wait for loyal patrons and the new business

coming into the new location has already paid for itself. “It accommodates more seating, has a cleaner, beautiful décor,” he says. “The build out, the tables and chairs that go into Figgy’s is a beautiful space and we’re really happy and proud to be here.” To some Figgy’s is a nondescript sandwich shop surrounded attorney’s offices and insurance companies. To their loyal fan base they are a way of life. Over the past 40 years and the 22 since Jackson purchased the place Figgy’s on any given day features a who’s who of movers and shakers in the greater Chattanooga area. On any given day you will see attorneys, media personalities and business owners come through the doors. Visitors have included Grammy winning artist, Emmylou Harris, tennis great Roscoe Tanner and even senator Bob Corker. The setup for the shop is simple with a simple menu that is small compared to most restaurants around. “You have too many things on your menu, people can’t make their minds up; you have a lot of freezer space because you’re offering too much,” Jackson says. “You keep it simple; people know what to come back for or it they like a particular thing they know what to order. Some restaurants do will with a lot of items on the menu. We never did,” he continues. “Just to keep it simple seems to work well for us.” The simple menu and the quality of the product is what keep people coming back for more – many for decades. The

menu has remained the same with an occasional specialty sandwich. “The tuna and chicken salad are made every morning,” says Jackson. “We have special sauce, which is a house sauce the Davenports came up with years ago that’s very popular.” The special sauce came about during Krystal’s first attempt of a larger burger, called “The Big K” but was not successful compared to the brand’s small

sandwich,” he adds. “When it gets colder heated roast beef or a heated ham and cheese, or a heated special and chili dogs seem to be doing well, too.” Walking into Figgy’s is reminiscent of walking into a New York deli. With a line often going back to the door during lunch, Jackson has the uncanny ability of remembering what his regulars usually order

or twice,” he says. Then I’ll remember the things with that sandwich.” His ability to remember a person’s order reminded Jackson of a humorous incident when he was visiting New York. “I was in New York City years ago and my son was getting my attention. We were standing in Times Square and a man was trying to get my attention and pointing at me,” he recalls. “My son was telling me, ‘There’s a man over there trying top get your attention dad’. I looked over and I didn’t know the man’s name but I knew he was a chicken salad plate,” he laughs. “That’s an old story. It happens to me in Chattanooga a lot. I don’t know your name but I know what you eat.” Despite the lack of fanfare from patrons over the 40th

anniversary, Figgy’s is a downtown institution and the key to its success is one word. often telling them what they “Simplicity,” says Jackson. “A want with little modification. good product, a smiling face, “That’s the beauty of having it’s a good place to eat.” something where you have only seven or eight items to - Dave Weinthal choose from on your menu and one person orders it once

Perhaps the signature sandwich is called “The Special”, that puts to use the signature “special sauce”. “We call it the “Special” because it goes on a corn-dusted Kaiser roll or a seeded bun with ham and turkey – heated if you want it. You can add lettuce tomato and pickles. It’s very popular,” according to Jackson. The Special and the chicken salad are the most popular items on the menu. “It’s really kind of seasonal,” Jackson says. “In hotter weather you get colder sandwiches – special with lettuce and tomato or tuna, chicken or the turkey ENIGMA

Collective Soul Still Shines After 25 Years It seems like only yesterday a fresh sound out of Atlanta came into the nation’s conscious. Believe it or not it’s been 25 years that has seen seven number one singles, another 10 top 40 singles, five consecutive platinum albums and a gold album since Collective Soul caught everyone’s ear with “Shine”. The band was on the cutting edge of going independent when other acts opted for the safety of a major label and managed to maintain popularity. At the end of last year the band put out a live album showcasing some of the biggest songs of the modern rock era and all time. When one hears the name Collective Soul they immediately think Ed Roland, the band’s lead singer and principle songwriter. But Roland’s not the only one in

the band that’s been there from the actually recorded their breakout a side project, Will Turpin and the start. There’s brother Dean and debut at Will’s father’s recording Way, who recently released their Will Turpin on bass. Turpin has studio, Real 2 Reel Studios. Not to first full-length album, Serengeti Drivers to stellar reviews. We recently caught up with Will to talk about the 25 years of Collective Soul and forging his own identity with his own project.

and there were a ton of wellrounded musicians out there that are better than us, but we were confident in the fact that our special thing we had together we thought it was worthy and everybody’s going to love it. We were on the edge of our seats seeing if MTV would add our video, but deep down we had a confidence of our chemistry and our friendship – and the songwriting that really kind of carried the day.

My dad kind of let his little baby eagle fly out of the nest. He was there. Collective Soul doesn’t get together without my father’s studio. My father was even one of Ed’s mentors in songwriting. Especially with the music scene I was playing music over and over again in different ensembles – the personalities – playing drums with a jazz trio, playing vibraphone with a New Age ensemble – all that stuff becomes a part of your music DNA or whatever. I guess I was able to come in and be the most rounded but then I was able to focus in on being part of the rhythm section as well. I could sing the backups, I could do whatever as well. In the studio I was doing stuff as well, too. When you think about it, I grew up in a studio where I saw it all. I saw country artists, bluegrass artists, I saw R&B artists, I saw rock and roll artists. That’s all I did – music my whole life. I then went to college and majored in music. It’s

It was all L.A. crap. We were right there after that front edge. We were there right after Nirvana kind of blew up the seal righting songs about real things – not about partying and getting laid. No makeup – no hairspray; just a sweater. They kind of broke that seal two years before we came out, but we definitely were a part of it. The whole thing wasn’t about hair and makeup and singing about getting laid, it was about – it’s rock and roll - we’re edgy but we’re singing about real things that happen to people and happened to us as well. Ed’s songwriting has amazing depth but there was also depth in the musicality in the arrangements of the songs. I remember being a youngster and thinking – I grew up in a studio and I would think that the L.A. stuff was pretty basic stuff.

Yeah, it was literally all about. Here’s the best group of fans here and I’m the one from the outside. I was the one who was a music major in school and I would sing backup and play percussion for a while when Ii could make the gig. That way I wasn’t the bass player and they didn’t have to have me. And it was late summer ’93 and I decided I would commit to bass. The guy that was playing bass really wasn’t in our circle – I mean he was a friend of ours. Musically the originally five guys were not only on the same page, we were on the same line – like crazy. That guy was not really doing it for us and I told Ed before anything happened I played bass. My best friend was on drums and I knew the rhythm section, so I’ll sing backup and play bass. Ed was like, yeah. Drivin’ N Cryin’. We were listening to what was considered “alternative”. And

that’s what I liked. I was influenced by bluegrass; I was influenced by even classical. I loved classical music. Me and my friends, which included the original Collective Soul – we listened to rock and roll which was our thing.

I would describe my band as a bunch of guys who are excellent musicians who are friends and enjoy playing with each other. Unfortunately I don’t play enough shows with Will and the Way because of the dates with Collective Soul. I really don’t get enough time to jam with those guys to be honest with you. We’ve got some more shows coming up this winter. It’s piano, electric guitar, bass and drums – that’s the cornerstone of it. The main difference with my stuff the Wurlitzer or

When you come back to the Collective Soul thing it makes it all stronger. That’s the way we think about it anyway.

We haven’t played “Hollywood” in a while and I was getting sick of playing that. It’s the only one I ever got really sick of playing. It was just so poppy. That was the thought when we recorded it – we were going for pop, but I got tired of playing that one. The rest of them I don’t really get tired of playing at all. I’ve been having fun up there. The arrangements are basically the same but we don’t play the same stuff every night. We don’t have anything I don’t look forward to playing after we got “Hollywood” off the set list. It’s been at least three years since it’s been on the set list. I can probably come up with more songs that I’d like to play that we don’t play enough. A song called “Under Heaven’s Sky”, a song called “Maybe off of Disciplined Breakdown. I’d like to play more songs off the first record, “Goodnight, Good Guy”, “Breathe”. I’d like to play a lot more songs.

Alice Cooper Welcomed All To His Nightmare On October 12, 2018, the greatest all-time Rock N Roll showman, Alice Cooper and his fantastic, top-notch band arrived through the looking glass to Chattanooga, TN at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium that was packed to the rafters with an all aged audience that was cocked and ready to rock, and everybody did. Sitting in the audience, I thought about all the times I played Alice on the radio through the years at several Chattanooga rock stations, all the hits you would expect plus deep cuts like “Leather Boots”,

“Levity Ball”, “Black Juju”, and “Halo of Flies” and thinking about my former radio station KZ106 where I did tours of duty in the 80’s 90’s and 2000’s and how they were celebrating their 40th anniversary, when suddenly the lights dim, the black and white curtains with Alice Cooper’s logo lights up and the eyes on it change colors and the whole curtain falls suddenly to the floor as Alice and the band come out with all their guns a blazing to the headbanging “Brutal Planet” accompanied by three guitarists a bass player, drummer and the Mad Hatter himself, Alice Cooper, who at 70 can out move and out

rock everybody in the building prancing back and forth on stage and spinning canes and swashbuckling a sword cutting balloons full of confetti. At one time, Alice stuck his sword in a pile of money and scattered it into the audience. I was lucky to get a 100 with the master himself on the bill. I’m never gonna spend it. And the audience knew how to rock as well. This wasn’t one of the concerts where the staff asked those standing to please sit down so the seated could ENIGMA

for us, Alice grew another head like a lizard grows his tail and came out blasting away at the rock anthem “I’m Eighteen”, a song I have known and loved since it was new and I was seven. After a brief encore, Alice reemerged with the greatest anthem of them all “School’s Out” that incorporated another song that Alice Cooper’s often co-writer and producer, Bob Ezrin collaborated and produced, “Another Brick in the Wall Pt 2” for Pink Floyd. It fit right in. I wanted both of the songs to be my high school class songs. In the end we all graduated with rock n roll diplomas.

one continuous party where everybody seemed to know all the words to just about every song and liked their music loud. They were never disappointed as Alice’s tunes seamlessly segued one after another. There was “No More Mr. Nice Guy” followed by the thunderous drums and jet fueled guitars of “Under My Wheels” into “Billion Dollar Babies” and “Flush the Fashion’s Grim Facts”, “Lost in America” from Cooper’s Last Temptation, and the wonderful “Serious” from From the Inside reminded me of watching Alice sing it on a Showtime Alice Cooper special when I was in Junior High.

After the show, I was with Alice and what looked like about 20 other folks. The first words out of Alice’s mouth were, How many of you fell in love with my guitarist tonight? One guy hollered out, “Which one?” And Alice said, “Yeah right!” We all knew he was talking about the gorgeous Nita Strauss who she said can rock as good if not better than anyone else, and that not only that, she could beat all of us, including the band and the rest of the audience in a fight. She has an album coming out soon. I can’t wait to hear it. A mixtape of ©Dave Weinthal

I do not remember exactly. He asked if anybody knows what song it was and I said it was off the Billion Dollar Babies album and he smiled pleased and said Unfinished Suite. Later, “Pain” from Flush the Fashion kicked in and after the opening lines, Alice started singing exactly where I would when the chorus kicked in… “I’m your pain… unstoppable pain...” I let off an audible whew. He and his longtime manager, Seth Gordon’s granddaughter agreed that we really knew how to rock. Alice said his mother was born in Tennessee that he had Tennessee blood in him. I think I may be an official Chattanooga Vampire. He signed my album, “To Randy Black with all my blood, Alice Cooper”. Hopefully, Alice comes back time after time including with his other band, Hollywood Vampires. Maybe there is a reason Alice never ages.
