All’s Fair in Love, War and Law Practice (At Least on the Defense Side) Recently on a Sunday morning I answered a knock on my front door. I looked out to see a young woman who smiled at me pleasantly. My dogs were barking furiously so I told her to hold on and I went out my kitchen door and then through the garage. I approached her on my sidewalk and she advised me her name and that she was a private investigator working on “The Kaiser Case”. I immediately knew who she was referring to but I still did not comprehend why she was here. I knew she was referring to Marlon Kaiser who had cold-bloodedly murdered Hamilton County Deputy Sheriff Donald Bond in September, 2001. I had been a police officer for the Chattanooga Police Department and on the Special Weapons And Tactics Team at the time of the tragedy. The SWAT team had been called out when it was determined Deputy Bonds’ assassin had been located in a house not far from the murder scene. I was deployed as a sniper and observed the killer carry something to the railing of a back

deck and watched him drop it over of alternate theory about what the deck rail. happened and that as I understood it his defense team was trying to What he had dropped was Deputy file another appeal. unprofessional or at least improper. I told them that they should have realized that as a 30 year police officer that I would not discus the case without either the approval of or with someone from the D.A.’s (District Attorney’s) office present. I told them “He should be gone”, referring to the killer. She replied, “He’s on Death Row.” I quickly told her, “He hasn’t been executed”. She looked a little dumbfounded at that point. I then told her they needed to get in their van and get out of my driveway. They quickly complied but it did get me upset. I put a post on Facebook about the incident to warn other people who were involved. I remember the days when people respected Sunday did not disturb people on business matters. I really thought the attempt to interview me was handled unprofessionally and improper ethically.

ney committing what I considered an unethical act. I was sitting in the “police peanut gallery”, which is over to the side of the courtroom so police officers do not have to sit with defendants and their supporters and family members. I was reading a magazine waiting for my case to be called when an officer came over and advised me that a defense attorney was taking our victim outside the courtroom. This person was an employee of a fast food restaurant that had been robbed with the employee being placed at gunpoint. I had seen that the attorney leaving with the victim but thought nothing of it as this attorney had been working for the District Attorney’s office. He told me this attorney was now doing defense work. I jumped up and practically flew out of the courtroom scanning the outside area for my victim. When I spotted her I told her this attorney was representing the robber and that she did not have to talk to him if she did not want to. She told me she did not wish to and I had her return to the courtroom. This attorney was not happy. I did not care about his feelings. I knew my victim did not know who she was talking to or that she did not have to talk to him. I felt the way he handled this was very improper. When I returned to the courtroom my victim related she only knew that this person was an attorney and she did not know he was representing the defense or that she was not required to talk to him. Alas, just as I thought. This attorney was upset I had interfered. He tried to get me back by referring to some obscure legal decision or precedent where the preliminary hearing was held at the scene of the crime. The judge did not agree and the hearing was held there in the courtroom and his guilty client’s case was bound over to the grand jury. The robber later received prison time. Ah, some days it was really fun to be a detective.

the police. This classified as a robbery so a detective was summoned. The victim said she wanted to prosecute so I procured warrants for the now ex-boyfriend. Ah, never underestimate love. This no good ex-boyfriend contacted my victim from the jail and convinced her to take him back. They had even gotten married. The defense attorney, who seemed to not like me for unknown reasons, was practically drooling as she related this information to me. She inferred she might file a complaint against me as she claimed I had unduly influenced her client’s now wife. I told her we would be proceeding with the hearing. She seemed astonished. I told the D.A. what the situation was but let him in on my ace in the hole. When the case was called the defense attorney told the judge my victim did not want to prosecute that day but that I had intimidated her into prosecuting. The judge didn’t look happy. I told the judge to examine the paperwork and with the affidavit there was an agreement to prosecute signed by the victim declaring she wanted to prosecute of her own free will, without intimidation or words to that effect. I related to the judge that I had read the agreement to the victim and explained it just in case she did not read well or understand the agreement - all in front of a witness. I got to turn and grin at my accusing defense attorney. I was really mad she had attacked my credibility. Now I felt vindicated. The judge was really not happy now. He gave the nonprosecuting “victim” ten days in the workhouse. I always felt the defense attorney should have been given some type of censure but I was happy enough that I had got the best of her. Lesson learned: read all the paperwork on a case. Don’t jump to conclusions and make accusations without doing some checking. Lawyers aren’t supposed to ask questions they don’t already know the answe.

On another day in court I was approached by a defense attorney before the hearing. She told me she was asking for the charges to be dropped against her client as I had coerced the victim into prosecuting. I was not happy. This was a case where a girlfriend had been robbed of her belongings by her no good boyfriend, assaulted then left on the side of Brainerd Road in thin clothes and no shoes. This during cold, rainy weather. A passerby had seen her get dumped on the side of the road and called

Another day in a civil proceeding a former judge tried to claim that I had told an administrative board that his client had a felony conviction. This would have prevented the client from obtaining a beer permit. I had told the board the person had been ”charged” with a felony. Any attorney knows there is a difference between being “charged” with a crime and being convicted. Charges are sometimes dismissed, reduced or the person is acquitted of the charges. This former judge began grandstanding ENIGMA

and inferred to the Board that I had said his client had a felony conviction on his record. This “attorney” claimed the police department had just gotten a “million dollar computer system” and that I should have used that to check the record. Two problems with that: The police department had never gotten any such system and the other is that when my office did background checks they could only do a very limited one as this was not for a criminal investigation. You would think a former judge would know that. Perhaps he did but just wanted to make it appear I had committed some type of impropriety. Why I would do this was never asked. This “attorney” basically accused me of perjury even though this was not a court and I had not been sworn in. Again you would think a former judge would know that. He had some of the Board going along with his malarkey. I was not happy he got these ‘free swings” at me and I really had no recourse. Sorry but when I had to deal with this person after that it was with a really “cold shoulder”. Sometimes I did get a little “payback” with an aggressive or unfair defense attorney. We had an offi-

cer struck by a vehicle. In our search for the suspect I had seen the defendant driving the vehicle. His being behind the wheel of the vehicle was being disputed by his attorney. I had just testified I had seen the defendant driving the suspect vehicle. The defense attorney very dramatically turned toward the audience in the courtroom and asked” You mean here in front of God and everyone you saw this man driving?” I paused then took a step toward the attorney and in a very theatrical voice I replied, “Here in front of God and everyone ….” As I had stepped forward the attorney had shrunk back as if he thought I was coming after him. The gallery erupted in laughter. I noticed the judge was trying to contain a chuckle. The attorney, now flustered, looked at the judge and asked “your Honor?” The judge replied, “Well, you asked him”. Hey, you win some and you lose some but I always tried to play fair. I didn’t think the defense always did. But, hey that’s my opinion. Thanks, Mark Haskins

An English woman who was expecting to be on her honeymoon is instead enjoying an impromptu American vacation after her former fiance attempted to fake his own suicide to get out of marrying her. “I’m a terrible, awful person,” Tucker Blandford, the 23-year-old former groom to be, admitted to the Daily Mail. Blandford met his former fiancee, Alex Lanchester, also 23, when Lanchester was studying abroad as a film student visiting the University of

Connecticut. The two quickly became close and started dating. When Lenchester’s time in the U.S. ended, Blandford proposed to her. As Lenchester planned for their wedding, Blandford grew increasingly uncomfortable with the longdistance relationship. Unable to face the pressure of committing to Lenchester or breaking up with her, Blandford concocted a plan to fake his own suicide. Pretending to be his father, Blandford called Lenchester and delivered the news that he suffered from depression and had jumped into the path of a moving car. The grim ruse quickly

Apparently this museum is in possession of a possessed doll. The doll named Scarlet was donated to the museum a year ago and in that time has been quite chatty. The investigators attempted to record it and were not disappointed. Using special digital recorders during the interview, the museum’s curator, Linzi Sheeran, asked the doll: “Is that your real name?” To which a voice clearly replied: “You’re fucked.” Linzi says Scarlet loves to blurt swear words. When the doll was asked: “Who are you more scared of?” It sounds like Scarlet replies: “Linzi.” The doll also appears to love attention. As the investigators were preparing to leave doors started slamming and their equipment went haywire. “It was like she was throwing a supernatural tantrum.” This is what adoption story nightmares are made of. 8-year-old girl, who is from Ukraine, tried to kill them, and that is the least bizarre claim they made. Michael and Kristine Barnett claim the 8-year-old daughter they adopted is actually an adult with a rare form of dwarfism. In an interview Michael said the girl, Natalia, tried to hurt him and Kristine and kill them multiple times. He said doctors told them the girl is a “sociopath” and a “con artist.” Michael said Natalia would do things like place clear thumbtacks on the stairs face up so they would step on them. He claimed the girl also tried to poison Kristine by putting Pine-Sol in her coffee mug and then tried to push her into an electric fence. The couple divorced in 2014, four years after adopting the girl. A doctor examined the girl in 2010 and deemed her 8 years old. The couple had the girl’s age changed to 22 before leaving for Canada. The girl, who’s now either 16 or 30 years old, has not responded to media requests for comment.

Give Yourself A Little Grace How different would your life look if you gave yourself half as much Grace as you give others? Have you ever considered the fact that you don’t give yourself enough Grace? We are living in a world that is full of not enough. The consequence of that though, is we stop trying. We shut down. Or worse, we begin to diminish the qualities that make us unique. Simply put, we quit letting our own light shine. Stop. We need all the lights we can get. Otherwise, we will end up living in a dark world. How scary will that be? Numero uno - you need to love yourself enough to fight for what you want. I am not saying go out and be ugly to other humans. What I am saying is, you need to adjust your eyes and focus on your own life and your own goals. Yes, you have made mistakes in the past. Probably terrible mistakes, but who hasn’t? Those moments do not control your future... unless you allow them to. Forgive yourself and move on. Don’t allow yourself to drown in your own self-pity. Grace, people. Why can we give Grace to others, yet when it comes to yourself it is like all of a sudden there is a shortage? Wake up, people, there is no shortage. Here is the reality of your situation... You are one-of-a-kind. You are priceless. Absolutely, unapologetically, unique. No one on this planet can ever be you! Many can mimic, but no one will succeed. Getting A Word in Edgewise with

Jason Mewes It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years since Kevin Smith turned Hollywood upside down; first with Clerks and then a series of mostly comic adventures. Two characters that had bit parts in the early moves were two shady characters know as Jay and Silent Bob, portrayed by Jason Mewes and Smith, himself. The two characters are a couple of local pot dealers with Jay an obnoxious over the top persona while Silent Bob lives up to his name and rarely talks communicating through facial gestures hand gestures. Clerks was followed

by Mallrats, Chasing Amy in Smith’s View Askewniverse and in each movie Jay and Silent Bob got a little more screen time acting as comic relief in and of themselves. Jay and Silent Bob were Generation X’s version of Cheech and Chong, a hilarious comic duo totally in sync with each other most of the time. It all culminated with 2001’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back that saw Mewes and Smith take center stage in the film and proved to be one of the best buddy road movies reminiscent of the old Bob Hope Bing Crosby adventures

from the golden age of movies. Fast forward to 2019 with the exception of Clerks II we haven’t heard much from Jay and Silent Bob. The recently released Jay and Silent Bob Reboot sees the dynamic duo at it again as they lampoon pop culture and trends much like the original. To make matter even better, Smith and Mewes have taken to the road themselves traveling to different cities for a showing of the movie and animated discussion with the movie’s two stars. Mewes, the over the top linguist took time from his never-ending road trip to talk all things Jay ad Silent Bob.

Clerks we did, a bunch of us were friends and after Kevin sold it they gave us a little bit of money, but it wasn’t a whole lot. And then Mallrats after taxes and stuff wasn’t that much. And then Chasing Amy I was only one day on there. So, three movies in the span of four years; maybe after taxes I cleared like ten grand or something, so I still had to work and everything. People really didn’t start saying stuff. After Mallrats came out on DVD, it really wasn’t until then that people on the street were like, “Hey, aren’t you in that movie Mallrats?” – and stuff like that. I definitely did not think after Clerks, but even all the way up to Dogma that people started

we were in motion to doing Clerks and then Clerks fell through because Jeff Anderson didn’t want to do it. I’m not sure why, but for some reason he didn’t want to do it. Then Mallrats was going to happen. He said, “Still don’t cut your hair because we’re gonna do Jay and Silent Bob and Mallrats. Universal didn’t want us to do Mallrats. And Kevin says, “Why are we fighting? We don’t own the rights to Mallrats and Jeff didn’t want to do Clerks but you and I both want to do a movie and we own the rights to Jay and Silent Bob. Let’s do Jay and Silent Bob. I have a great idea for a story for Jay and Silent Bob Reboot”, which is what he started writing. So yeah, the first time was a little weird, but now I got it short and I like it short. I’m ready to get back

to short hair now. It’s funny, because even my kid doesn’t want me to cut my hair now. She’s four and a half years old. I said, “Logan I’m going to cut my hair.” And she said, “No! I want your hair long.” She likes that her hair and my hair are long. It’s funny I’m now hesitant because she doesn’t want me to cut my hair.

nitely think then back then people when my agent was like, “Does he still have long hair?” And then they put me on these auditions and meetings with directors and stuff. with you. This day and age the comic book animated movies that come out – the TV shows that come out – all the CW shows: again don’t get me wrong I know some shows are not as strong as the other ones. 25 years ago when I got into comics, I was a comic book fan and I went to ComicCons and the only people there were straight up comic book nerds, if you will. Now it’s like everyone knows the comic book universe. It’s awesome to see where movies have gone with the technology. You go to Comic-Con now there are people from all walks of life and ages and everything. No lie. When we used to go to Cons it was very typical, “Hey man, have you seen Batman #6?” Now it’s like 25-year-old beautiful men and women. It’s just

They tend to steal that scene from themselves with Jay and Silent Bob taking over the whole thing. It’s just Kevin able to combine everything in the universe and combine everyone’s strengths I feel like for everything. I just think Jay and Bob is about Jay finding out he’s a dad and that steals the whole movie, but also each person. Chris Jericho is super funny in

that scene and steals the scene, but then Ben plays Holden and he’s awesome in that scene – Jason Lee and everybody. Kevin is able to take each person and able to use their strengths whether he’s using them as characters from the older movies that people are going to love to see again or somebody new like Chris Hemsworth that talks about Thor and this and that. It’s awesome.

awesome, man. For me it’s awesome that they have it and are willing to spend money to try to make Legends of Tomorrow, Flash, Arrow – all that stuff is so amazing to me. Almost every day of the week you can watch a different comic book show. Teen Titans - Batwoman just came out. Watchman. It’s awesome stuff. I guess the answer is a straight no. There can’t be a disappointing comic book hero movie or TV show because for me I just love that they’re taking the time to do such.

Jazz genre’s “It Girl”, Robin Grant returns with a new release that sees her stepping into a slightly different territory than before. The “Good Girl” chanteuse changes things up a bit with her new release, Off Label, yet doesn’t stray too far from her wheelhouse.

Strong, soaring vocals and music accompaniment are reminiscent of a bygone era, full of sass, talent and painting a cinemascape in one’s mind that evokes some of the greatest vocalists of the last century.

there is an aggression in the new songs that give her a more of an edge without alienating her loyal fan base and in turn invites more people to come along for the melodic ride.

Squeeze Open their Songbook The ‘80s were a great time to grow up even without internet and cell phones. One of the greatest things about times besides economic prosperity was new music. What has become nicknamed as “corporate” rock where everything seemed on a certain style, schedule and whatnot, had given way to punk, post-punk and new wave. My generation literally witnessed the second “British Invasion”. Most of us were too young or not quite born yet to remember The Beatles, Rolling Stones The Kinks and The Who, even though they were or are on our current playlist, we took to bands like Durand Duran, ABC, Def Leppard, Eurythmics, The Fixx, Madness, Modern English – you name it. We enjoyed a new British invasion. Instead of Ed Sullivan to introduce us to the new wave (the

music style as well) we had this thing called Music Television or MTV. I know I’ve harped on about MTV in the past but the original

Some Some like myself would whet our appetite for new music on MTV and often head to the mall to the Record Bar or venture out a bit and hit either Cat’s or Paradise Records (the latter was beside the Ankars in Brainerd and eventually replaced by Cat’s before it moved across from Eastgate Mall). Local record store chains around here were really cool back in the day. They often employed various musicians – someone the rise, others burned out or too cool for their own good. Often the staff would choose what albums we heard in the store while we shopped. Unless corporate gave an order to play something really mainstream to boost and encourages sales like Michel Jackson or Styx, it was left to the staff. They would go out of their way to play bands and albums I had not heard of at the time like Devo, B2-5s, The Alarm – you name it. More often than not most of these albums weren’t found in the regular section. Instead you had to go to the “import section”. There, my best friend Chuck and I would go through the stacks of vinyl (usually) and it opened up a new world to us, not to mention looking at all the unique album cover art. The albums often came enclosed in ENIGMA

heavy plastic outer wrap and there would be an orange or other brightly colors sticker that read “Import”. Sometimes we recognized artists but some of the singles or albums were ones we had never heard before. One of those bands I discovered through the import section and then MTV was Squeeze. I remember seeing the video for “Black Coffee in Bed” and being struck by the melody and with a song structure and harmonies that reminded me of The Beatles. Add to that singer Glenn Tilbrook looked like a young John Lennon. I was quickly enamored. I think KZ106 had played “Tempted” a year earlier, but that’s about where my research ended on the band. “Black Coffee” never really took off locally and local radio was flooded with band like Def Leppard, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Thompson Twins for example with the latter two mentioned one hit wonders to most except me. This began my musical snobbery. As college went along one of my cooler fraternity brothers who like obscure bands and turned me on to a bunch had a cassette of Singles - 45s and Under, a compilation of Squeeze’s early work that was successful only marginal at best. By the time MTV introduced me to Squeeze the band was going through their first breakup – one of three or four to date. Being from around here Squeeze came nowhere near here to my knowledge and being a poor college kid I couldn’t afford the road trip or even a dependable vehicle to make the venture – let alone find someone willing to go. The Babylon and On was released and I got excited briefly as two songs charted and more than one fraternity brother had the cassette and/or CD. Still no dependable transportation and the follow up Frank did not keep the band’s momentum going in the states. Putting out a new album every couple of years with no radio promotion despite positive reviews. The

band went of hiatus again in 1998 and would be over 12 years before Tilbrook and his songwriting partner and bandmate Chris Difford would pick up the Squeeze moniker again. During the hiatus Tilbrook and Difford had marginally successful solo releases and I got to see Glenn in concert many times. Like many in the audience I patiently waited, listening to his new material and eventually the material by his new band, The Fluffers, but I quietly hoped and prayed he would humor me and do a Squeeze song. He always did and that made the wait worthwhile, not that his solo material wasn’t good, I wanted to hear Squeeze live and this was the closest I figured I would ever get. And then things changed suddenly earlier this year.

Tilbrook and Difford were often called their generation’s Lennon and McCartney. Before I read any press on them that was my impression listening to their songs except without the proper fanfare. In actuality I actually like their songs better than most of The Beatles. There is more of an emotional connect because they are of my era and quite frankly heads and shoulders above other ‘80s bands that have sold a ton more records plus Squeeze as a band had much better chemistry between the two with no known personal issues between band members. Plus they fit perfectly inside my wheelhouse of a band with great music that everyone that hears them loves but rarely if ever chart. this was no ordinary show. The crowd from the floor to the balcony started to sway in unison and before you knew it became a crowd sing-along never more obvious than during “Tempted”. By far the band’s most popular song. The song started acoustically with Tibrook front and center as the rest of the band watched. Tilbrook needed no help because everyone in the house was already singing along and harmonizing. When Tilbrook came to the lyrics, “I’m at the car park, the airport; the baggage carousel” Difford answered with the bass parts (“(The people keep on grindin’)” and “(It’s no story I could tell)”) you could hear a pin drop with everyone mesmerized. One by one each member started playing along to the grand finale that saw a few thousand people singing along at the top of their lungs.

Following “Tempted” the band played a couple of favorites off Argybargy, “Another Nail in My Heart” and “If I Didn’t Love You” that were sandwiched around “Goodbye Girl” off of 1978’s Cool For Cats. After taking a very short break the band came back for an encore and played “Take Me I’m Yours” and the aforementioned song that introduced many in the MTV generation to the band, “Black Coffee in Bed” – another sing along whether it was the initial intention of the band or not. It wasn’t long after that and to be honest just before this moment I started to tear up. Personally for the first time on a long time I was in a moment of true ecstasy. I was witnessed one of my favorite bands (top five) perform songs I love (many of which I sand along to – good tings it was loud and everyone else was as well). Not only that everyone around me was in the same great mood – a rarity. There is no greater joy in the world than that moment – at least to me. Then I became sad. This may not only be the last time I get to see the band in concert, but also perhaps maybe ever. After all, Squeeze has been around for 45 years, so how much longer do they really want to keep doing it? Reality makes me sad at times.

Adam Ant’s Antics Prove He’s No Goodie Two Shoes When you get to see one of your favorite artists it’s too easy to come up a cheesy title for the review like, “Adam Ant Stands and Delivers” or “Vive le Ant” (which I think I used last time). With each tour since his comeback in 2012 he has been playing increasingly larger venues. Each time he packs it out. There was plenty of reason for the crowd and the need for a larger hall. This was the “Friend of Foe” tour. Ant played his first solo album (without the Ants) Friend or Foe in its entirety and then gave those familiar with more than his MTV hits a musical history lesson.

I’ve been fortunate to see Adam Ant in concert for over 25 years and like the proverbial fine wine (another cliché) he continues to get better with age. On this foray I brought a couple of my friends to see the show with me. It didn’t take much persuading. Everything was there. Ant’s style, dance moves, peering eyes, cockney accent when he spoke to the crowd and an almost sexual innuendo if you will. Many of the song titles in his catalog are of a sexual or fetish nature, even the more innocent ones like “Strip” and “Beat My Guest” for example. What was really at the forefront is that unmistakable swagger and bravado only Adam Ant has. Many have tried to duplicate it – Prince for example, but with a lesser degree of success. The only reason Prince surpassed Ant in popularity is because of his musical style. The crowd looked a little uncomfortable in their seats. Adam Ant is not a sit down show. I think it was a culture shock for many of the patrons of Woodruff Arts Center used to more sedate stuff coming from the stage. Only a week earlier I was there to see Vanessa Williams in concert and there were a number of gowns, black ties and even tuxedos there. Nothing as formal this night although I did see a few guys and a girl or two dress like Ant from the “Kings of the Wild Frontier” era. One usher and I had a good laugh about it because we were at both shows comparing the crowds.
