Thursday they will be at the Classic Centre in Athens, Ga, Alabama Theatre in Birmingham on Friday and at the Memorial Auditorium in Chattanooga on Saturday.
YES SHE IS Melissa Etheridge became one of the most popular recording artists of the '90s due to her mixture of confessional lyrics, pop-based folk-rock, and raspy, Janis Joplin/Rod Stewart-esque vocals. Etheridge is known for her mixture of "confessional lyrics, pop-based folk-rock, and raspy, smoky vocals." She has also been an iconic gay and lesbian activist since her public coming out in January 1993. She has received fifteen Grammy Award nominations, winning two, and an Academy Award. In September 2011, Etheridge received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Old Crow Medicine Show Provides A Sure Remedy Mountain music revivalists Old Crow Medicine Show spin traditional folk and bluegrass yarns with a rock & roll attitude. Critter Fuqua (vocals/banjo/resonator guitar), Kevin Hayes (guitjo), Morgan Jahnig (upright bass), Ketch Secor (vocals/fiddle/harmonica/banjo), and Willie Watson (vocals/guitar/banjo) may specialize in rags, hollers, and pre-World War II blues, but they were weaned on Nirvana and Public Enemy. The quintet’s members — who are all from different states — met in New York, hit the road, played before an impressed Doc Watson in front of a North Carolina pharmacy, and were promptly scheduled to play the folk icon’s Merlefest. Old Crow Medicine Show then relocated to Nashville, where they found themselves gracing the stage at the Grand Ole Opry, opening for the likes of Dolly Parton and the Del McCoury Band, touring with Merle Haggard and Marty Stuart, and appearing on NPR’s Prairie Home Companion. Last year saw them inducted into the Grand Ole Opry and this summer saw the release of their newest album remedy. We got a chance to catch up with Ketch the other day as the band

I guess it’s just a result of all the work. You know, I guess I knew as a kid that “(Rock Me Like A) Wagon Wheel” was going to be popular because it made me feel the same way that it did all the other people who listened to it feel. But I really didn’t go into it thinking that the band was going to get really big. When you play a fiddle and a banjo and you sing in harmony and you’re writing your own songs there’s just a natural feeling to that kind of work. Well, that’s kind of a challenge of being in a medicine show. How do you get all these strings that are strung over wood and skin to make a sound that is palatable and not like a Charles Oz piece. I guess the challenge is in writing and arranging for a large band of string players. We have many, many vocalists – it’s like the Grateful Dead up there with their two drummers and their five vocalists and everybody switching instruments. I guess the Dead didn’t do that as much as we do. We switch a lot of instruments. We could pass left or right and keep the song going. So for everyone of those songs about come on down to the beach with me and let’s live this country fantasy which I’m a big, tough dude and you’re a submissive woman and we’ll party together – all that stuff was pushed out by a song that a teenager wrote with a Bob Dylan bootleg – a song that was 40 years in the making. It’s about a kid in an old time string band hitting down to Dixieland and knowing that even if he dies along the way that something along the journey will set him free. It was really the stuff dreams were made of. Bob’s gonna call you up and say, “Hey, help me finish this song”. It’s like Shakespeare asking for help with his new play. It’s a really different collaborative process than the last one. The last song that Bob and I wrote together was “Rock Me Mama” and I never got Bob’s permission and he never got any of my letters – and if he did he didn’t write back. With “Sweet Amarillo” he wrote back. He listened to the demo. He had constructive criticism and we followed his commands. Bob ought to get a production credit for it. He’s the man. The man is a genius – the most important musician to walk the green earth if you ask me.

It’s like playing a 15-foot fiddle. It’s the most wonderful thing. I just feel like I’m at the top of a penthouse suite with Roy Acuff and Uncle Dave Macon and Deford Bailey, partying down with Maybelle Carter and doing rope tricks with Tex Ritter. There’s no higher achievement in the land and when you’re a fiddle player, a banjo player, it just doesn’t get bigger than the Opry. It’s America’s most beloved broadcast. You talk about radio and there’s like these asterisks that only refer to KISS Country 101 or whatever they’re playing at the Chili’s by the airport right now – that’s what’s become of country radio. But you know, country radio for about 90 years – there has been an AM signal out of Nashville called “The Grand Ole Opry” and WSM. And it’s still on every Saturday night and we’re so proud to be a part of that show.

Missing Pages The assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963 defined a generation. Many have said (and written) that JFK’s death marked “the end of innocence” for our nation. To this day, a lot of people have trouble believing the official story of what happened in Dallas. The hastily-convened Warren Commission and its controversial report concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. Conspiracy theorists have pointed their fingers at LBJ, the CIA, the mafia, the Cubans and others in their efforts to disprove the official version of events. And, to be fair, there are aspects of the Warren Report that don’t jibe with common sense. The public has never seen all of the documents pertaining to the assassination. The full collection is scheduled to be released in 2017…
…If the assassination of JFK was a defining moment for a generation, the terror attacks on September 11, 2001 were a defining moment for the next one. A total of 2,977 people were killed in New York City, Washington DC, and outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania after 19 men hijacked four fuel-filled commercial airliners bound for the west coast. America really hasn’t been the same since. We eventually caught and killed Osama Bin Laden, the Al Qaeda leader who claimed responsibility for the attacks. But, as in the case of the Warren Report, the Report of the 9/11 Commission left some unanswered questions. Who funded such a largescale operation? Were any foreign governments involved? Recent statements by Zacarias Moussaoui, the so-called “20th hijacker” of the 9/11 attacks,

Dear Rocco, I have an issue with respecting the people that I love the most. I seem to take out my frustrations on them, almost unconsciously. I don’t lash out at them, but more of just an arrogant, short, demeaning tone. This also includes mood changes toward them in certain circumstances and sometimes coming off defensive. I often believe that I do these things when I find myself uncomfortable in a situation. None the less, this isn’t a good characteristic to display, especially toward the ones you love the most. I’ve tried to pay attention to detail and notice when I’m doing it but for some reason I overlook it. Could you help me with some suggestions for things that I can do to resolve this. SA

The group, dubbed “The Throne Thrusters,” plans to launch the portable restroom thousands of feet into the air near Three Oaks. The group is mainly composed of members of Michigan Rocketry, a local highpower rocketry club that frequently launches rockets, according to Larry Kingman of The Throne Thrusters. The project has been in the works for about twoand-a-half years. The group came up with the idea at a meeting, after one member pondered the possibility of launching a portapotty with the right engine power, Kingman said. “Dave McVeigh, the owner of a local retail hobby store, pointed towards the old decrepit porta-potty bathroom sitting nearby in the field and said, ‘I’ll provide the rocket motors if anyone wants to make a rocket out of that.’ In the bat of an eye, everyone present had their hand up in the air saying, ‘Count me in!’” the group’s press release reads. A company donated a decommissioned porta-potty to the group for the experiment. Members of The Throne Thrusters have equipped it with cameras, parachutes, seven motors and measuring equipment. He was found hiding in the attic of one of the homes and arrested. He is scheduled to appear in court in Portland, Maine’s largest city, on Monday afternoon, police said in a statement on Monday. At around the same time of the break-ins, the town’s fire department was called to the nearby home of Valle’s parents, according to police reports. His parents were not at home at the time of the blaze, but the house was destroyed, police said. Falmouth police also said Valle’s car, which was parked at a local country club two miles away, was also lit on fire but not destroyed. Police said they are investigating the cause of both fires.

THE MIDNIGHT SWINGER
COCKY AND CONFIDENT BUT NEVER DULL, THE MIDNIGHT SWINGER ERUPTS ONTO THE STAGE LIKE THE VOLCANO IN FRONT OF THE MIRAGE HOTEL IN A FRESH AND ORIGINAL, OVER-THE-TOP EVENT THAT HAS BEEN CALLED SHARP-WITTED, CLEVER AND CLASSY. THE MIDNIGHT SWINGER COMBINES THE STYLE AND COOL OF A 60'S LAS VEGAS PERFORMER WITH THE FLASH AND EXCITEMENT OF A 21ST CENTURY SUPER BOWL HALFTIME EXTRAVAGANZA. MORE THAN JUST A STAND-UP COMEDIAN, THE MIDNIGHT SWINGER IS PROUD TO BE CALLED A THROWBACK ENTERTAINER. THAT'S RIGHT, AN ENTERTAINER! THE SWINGER BELIEVES IN MORE THAN JUST STANDING BEHIND THE MICROPHONE AND TELLING JOKES, AND DOING MORE THAN JUST A SIMPLE "COMEDY SHOW." THE MIDNIGHT SWINGER PUTS ON A SPECTACLE THAT WILL LEAVE YOU LAFFIN', SINGIN' AND SWINGIN'.
NOVEMBER 28-30
LANDRY
LANDRY IS DOWNRIGHT HILARIOUS AND YOU’RE SURE TO HAVE A GOOD TIME ONCE YOU SEE WHAT HE DOES ON STAGE. HE HAS BEEN APPEARING AT THE CATCH FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS AND EVERYONE WHO SEES HIM SAYS YOU NEED TO BRING HIM BACK, SO WE KEEP DOING SO.
DECEMBER 4 & 7
STEVE MINGOLA
WITH STEVE’S ARSENAL OF CHARACTERS, VOICES AND TOPICS, HE OFTEN CRACKS HIMSELF UP DURING HIS SHOW. GROWING UP IN NEW YORK AND THEN MOVING TO TEXAS, BEING ONLY HALF ITALIAN, YOUNGER SISTERS, DOGS, BELT DADS AND SMOKING ARE ONLY SOME OF THE TOPICS COVERED. HIS ACT HAS UNIVERSAL APPEAL BECAUSE EVERYBODY CAN RELATE TO SOMETHING.

Dracula Untold PG-13 The year is 1462, and Transylvania has enjoyed a prolonged period of peace under the just and fair rule of the battle-weary Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia, and his beloved and brave wife, Mirena. Together, they have brokered peace for their country and ensured its people are well-protected, especially from the powerful Ottoman Empire-an everexpanding scourge that has its sights on global domination. But when Sultan Mehmed II demands 1,000 of Wallachia’s boys-including Vlad’s own son, Ingeras be torn from their parents’ homes and forced to become child soldiers in his army, Vlad must decide: do the same as his father before him and give up his son to the sultan, or seek the help of a monster to defeat the Turks but ultimately doom his soul to a life of servitude. Vlad journeys to Broken Tooth Mountain, where he encounters a foul demon and enters into a Faustian bargain-one that gives the prince the strength of 100 men, the speed of a falling star and enough power to crush his enemies. However, he will be inflicted with an insatiable thirst to drink human blood. If by the end of three days Vlad manages to resist, he will return to his former self, and perhaps in that time manage to save
his people. Though should he drink, he will be forced to dwell in the darkness for the rest of his days, feeding only on the blood of humans and destroying all that he holds dear.

are one, the sexiness of the performer and two, physical attractiveness. Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull embodied them both. It was impossible to sit in your seat when these entertainers hit the stage whether they were wearing tight jeans or a svelte three-piece suit. When it comes to entertaining the masses, Pitbull is the master. He surrounded himself with six sultry dancers to highlight the music and provide some distraction to his usual fistpumping moves on stage. When Armando told the crowd he would be performing at halftime on Thanksgiving at the Dallas Cowboys game, his dancers were replaced by six Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders. The noise was deafening. He thanked the team for having him, the Salvation Army and the people themselves for the opportunity. Ironically, he even mentioned the dreaded word “Ebola” by saying, “All they need is sopa de pollo”. Not sure what he meant, but this place went crazy when he finished.
down in some of the slower numbers. Or at least you thought you would. Sitting really wasn’t an option during this closing portion of the show either. Every time you thought you could sit down and catch your breath, you felt compelled to stand up and cheer. Iglesias is interesting because he managed to build a career path completely different from his legendary father. His music had hints of familiar rock tunes like Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” and the Guns N’ Roses classic “Sweet Child of Mine”. If that wasn’t enough, Enrique used the giant screens on the stage for duets with Usher (“DJ Got us Falling in Love”), Ke$ha (“Timber”) and Christina Aguilera (“Feel This Moment”).
Everyone, especially the predominantly female crowd, made defining statements with their ‘dressed to impress’ attire. The beautiful surroundings added to the festive atmosphere. And I want to give props to Enrique for bringing a man and his wife up on stage to share a drink with him. By the time the trio was done, the crowd had helped Iglesias sing the iconic Ben E. King song, “Stand by Me.” It’s a moment this couple will never forget – and I’m sure can be found on YouTube if you look.
As you can expect, “Ole Ole Ole” rang loudly in the building. When Pitbull came out at the end of the show, thousands upon thousands of cell phones were in the air taking pictures. adoring crowd. This wasn’t a concert, but an event. People of all ages attended, though the crowd leaned heavily in the female side. Pitbull’s show began with scrolling text (like a Star Wars movie) outlining his rise from the depths. And then, right on cue, Armando rose from the arena floor on an elevated stage to a delirious reception. His conga line was an added delight. As for Enrique, he preferred the personal contact, whether it was entertaining people on stage, are hugging a child hoisted on him from the audience. There was a lot of trust and happiness surging through the American Airlines Center this night – all of it welldeserved.

A storm blew through Chattanooga taking no prisoners recently. Hard rock/ \metal act Halestorm featuring sister and brother Lzzy and Arejay Hale (guitar/ vocals and drums respectively) took over Track 29 and made it its own hard rock

Halestorm’s performance was pure turbo charged and such a welcome break of indie bands who sorta can play their instruments and are busy using their music for emotional therapy. Halestorm’s music is pure enjoyment and fun. Sure, some of the songs have a message, but Halestorm is what rock and roll truly is all about – joy and having a good time exuding that joy. With two albums in the books the band played a majority of their material from their second album, The Also Strange Case Of... thrown in were a few choice covers – two to be exact. The first midway through the
show was a cover of Judas Priest’s “Dissident Aggressor” and the first song of their encore was Guns N’ Roses’ “Out Ta Get Me” and they finished the frenzied night with “Here’s to Us”.
The middle act was band called Bad Medicine. With a name like that you expect them to be a Bon Jovi cover band. Not quite. It was original rock and roll. However the songs were too derivative and the band’s lead singer sounded like he should be fronting a Rage Against the Machine cover band as I expected the band to break into “Renegades of Funk” at any moment (they didn’t). As the lead singer told the crowd, “This song is about getting laid and stuff”. Yep. Bring on Hailstorm.
Opening the show was a mixed bag of talent. The night started with The Dead Deads out of Nashville. Fronted by Leticia Wolf they put on a great set of edgy, slightly punk rock and roll. It was a very entertaining set from the all-girl rock band featuring nifty instrumentation, catchy lyrics and a slightly tongue-in-cheek H Haallee ssttoorrm m SSee ttlliisstt stage persona. Big Ben Foils Titans’ Hopes
Sure the Titans have won only two games all year and let’s face it they’re not going to get close to qualifying for the playoffs, but there’s something magical in the air when the Pittsburgh Steelers come to LP Field. The Steelers held on for a 27-24 win coming back from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to vault into second place in the AFC North. The Titans… well nice try but you guys are mired in third place one game ahead of – gasp – Jacksonville.
Monday night the Titans found themselves behind by ten points. That seems to be the way things have been going for Tennessee all year.

Things continued to roll in Tennessee’s favor in the third quarter as both teams battled back and forth before Mettenberger found Chase Coffman from four yards out to extend the Titan lead to 24-13. “It really is a blessing to have the opportunity to be in there. I’m here to take advantage of these opportunities when I get them, and Zach (Mettenberger) has the trust in me to put it up there,” said Coffman.
