Dammit Spicolli Rest in peace Christopher Masticola. Many of you might not know who that is. If I said DJ Spicolli you might. And that in itself is part of the problem. Most importantly is that Chris, or Spicolli is gone, never to return – unless he’s haunting you – and again I’m not putting that past him. And if he is I’m sure he’s having a good laugh at our expense.

was a 180 degree difference from DJ Spicolli. DJ Spicolli, a great club deejay who had the knack to be entertaining on the microphone as well and not just a no personality “mix master” was the life of the party, could take over a room at the drop of a hat and just a lot of fun to hang out with.

Chris, or Spicolli as most everyone in the Chattanooga bar and entertainment business knew him became one of my closest friends over the years. To this day I still remember the first time I met him. I walked into The Bay, the old rock and dance club on East 11th Street back in the day and he was reaching over the bar fixing himself a drink. He looked at me and wanted to know who I was. The he said he wanted the price of buying an ad in Enigma. I laughed at him. I’ve had more than my fair share of tire kickers over the years. I was already having a hard enough time getting paid by his boss Jim Striker for the ads the club was running and doubted he could afford one on what he was being paid to work at the club.

time – a party monster so to speak. His living to excess was the stuff movies are written about including boozing and drug consumption and for a brief while as a small time dealer. Over time he put that behind him. I believe Crown Royal stock hit new highs thanks to Spicolli’s consumption of the spirit at one time. I remember one night when a fire truck and police arrived at the club. Spicolli climbed aboard the fire engine with a liter of Crown in Spicolli became famous over his hand and a crowd gathered around chanting his name. He

fanned the flames by pumping his fist and bottle in the air and starting a chant. If it wasn’t for the fact Striker was good friends with the police and was able to quiet down the situation he would have gone to jail. Of course there were other times in which he did go. Those followed Spicolli from his home in South Carolina to Knoxville to Chattanooga where he settled in 1997. There’s a lot about Chris Masticola that people don’t know, even those he worked with for years. Chris

The Chris I got to know was quiet and somewhat reserved. He was a computer geek going back to the ‘80s when he worked retail at Radio Shack where he discovered he had a knack for computers and programming. He became a pretty good hacker along the way and could tell you a bunch of stories of how and why he got into trouble with his skills. Once after being arrested he somehow was able to hack into the phone system at the jail that he was taken into. He made some modifications and as he was being released told the other inmates that as a parting gift he had “fixed” the phone system so they could use the phones for free. Stuff like that can’t be made of and it’s what legends are made of. Anyone who has been around the nightclub business knows it’s a dirty business. It almost makes today’s politicians look

innocent. The business is rampant with drug, drink and sex abuse, greed, theft and just about every major sin you could think of. Somehow Spicolli, who dabbled in some of the excesses of the industry didn’t get pulled in all the way. I remember going to his old apartment in Red Bank he shared with his younger brother. He was putting out a tray of water for some of the

stray animals that were in the neighborhood and ended up adopting one of them, “Blackie”. Blackie was by his side until she died early summer after more than a dozen years together. He always looked out for the little fellow be it a stray animal or human for that matter. Chris was truly a good person. He unfortunately worked in a crappy industry – one that eats

Spicolli was never one for long pants.

I would love for his spirit to be looking over my shoulder as I type this. I would also expect him to jump out and yell “Boo!” and then break into a chuckle – just like Spicolli. It’s hard to believe I will never hear his voice again or any of his in the kitchen. And despite the catchphrases: “Daddy-O!”, fact he was a club deejay he “Choppa choppa!”, “No soup for never listened to music outside of the club. I have been through a lot with Chris over the years – all good times. Most of which no one really knows about but one could obviously relate. It’s a misleading word to describe the act of nearly drowning a bound prisoner (often while elevating his feet and keeping his head low) over and over… and over. One prisoner was apparently waterboarded on more than 80 occasions. It’s torture, pure and simple. In 1968, The Washington Post published a controversial photograph of two U.S. soldiers and one South Vietnamese army soldier participating in the waterboarding of a North Vietnamese prisoner in Da Nang. The torturers, their supervisors, the attending physicians and those at the top who ordered it all… will simply get away with it. But if there’s any justice in the afterlife, Dick Cheney will learn what it feels like to be waterboarded and “rectally fed”… hopefully at the same time…

TOKYO (UPI) - A Tokyo restaurant announced couples will not be welcome at the eatery on Christmas Eve because the sight of them would make single customers feel lonely. The PiaPia restaurant posted a note in its window featuring a hand-drawn couple and a heart that have been crossed out with an explanation stating, “We will be refusing entry to all couples on December 24, with no exceptions!” The note says couples would serve as a

reminder of loneliness for single patrons on Christmas Eve and romantic pairs “would cause severe emotional trauma to members of our staff” who have to work on the holiday. PiaPia worker Takashi Kyozuka said the sign was posted because eatery staff don’t want customers to “feel sad that they are by themselves.” “To start with, someone said we should ban couples as a bit of a joke, but then we realized that it’s true,” he told The Telegraph. “If you are single on Christmas Eve, then it’s easy to get down.”

CANBERRA, Australia (UPI) Doctors in Australia said a parasitic worm removed from a man’s foot was likely inside his body for at least four years. Dr. Jonathan Darby of St. Vincent’s Hospital said the man, who moved to Melbourne from Sudan about four years ago, came into the hospital with a swollen foot he said had been causing him pain for about a year. Darby said an X-ray discovered there were two segments of Dracunculiasis medinensis, or “guinea worm,” in his ankle and foot. Doctors writing in the jour-

nal Pathology said the worm, which can grow to more than three feet in length, likely died inside the man’s foot and split into pieces. The doctors said the man was likely infected before he left Sudan. The guinea worm infects humans through the water they drink and borrows through the body to exit through the foot, doctors said. The exit often creates a burning sensation that leads patients to submerge the affected foot in water, allowing

the worm to infect the water with its larvae. “That whole process can take years. It can sit inside the human body alive for years or die, degenerate, and then cause problems in the area like it did for our patient,” Darby told Fairfax Media. The man made a full recovery once the worm was surgically removed, doctors said. LARGO, Fla. - A Largo, Florida man was hospitalized overnight after being shot just before midnight in what authorities said was a game between two men pointing loaded guns at each other. Apparently there is not much to do in Largo after ten o’clock. According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, 23-year-old Tony Roe was rushed to the hospital after being shot in the chest. Deputies responded to the home after Roe and 19-year-old Dylan Harvey engaged in a game in which they were playing with a loaded revolver by rolling the chamber then taking turns pointing the gun at each other. At one point when Harvey had the gun, it fired, striking Roe. The sheriff’s office is calling the shooting accidental for now. An investigation is ongoing. Roe is expected to survive his injuries. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UPI) - An Alabama church announced it will start holding services at a Buffalo Wild Wings to reach potential parishioners who “wouldn’t go to a church.” The Rev. Wesley

Savage, minister of young adults for Riverchase United Methodist Church in Birmingham, said the church is planning to begin holding Sunday morning services at a local Buffalo Wild Wings in the hopes of attracting worshipers who might be intimidated by the church setting. “We believe there’s a population that would attend a service there that wouldn’t go to a church,” Savage told AL.com. “We hope it’s going to be a more inviting atmosphere.” The services have been dubbed “The Stream” and they are being billed in signs posted by the church as “Wings. Prayer. Sports.” However, Savage said the restaurant will be preparing to open during the 45minute services, so no beer will be served during worship. “I’ve had that question come up,” Savage said. “We’re going to encourage people to stay for lunch, stay for sports. This is part of the partnership. We’ll help them with their business because they’re helping us.” NEW YORK (UPI) - The ballyhooed “Mobile Mistletoe” drones launched by TGI Fridays have claimed their first victim, a New York photographer who lost the tip of her nose. the U.S. passengers can’t order planes to delay their flights because of bad cabin service, no matter who the passenger is, but in Korea... A Korean Air executive has resigned from some of her duties after she ordered a flight to be turned around to the gate and a flight attendant off the plane because she was served nuts in a bag instead of on a plate. Heather Cho, whose Korean name is Cho Hyun-ah, resigned from the airline’s catering and in-flight sales business, and its cabin service and hotel business divisions, an airline spokesman said. But she is keeping her title as a vice president of the national carrier. The incident occurred at New York’s JFK airport on a flight due to take off for South Korea’s Incheon International Airport, outside Seoul. Cho reportedly demanded that the plane go back to the gate so the crew member who served her macadamia nuts out of a bag rather than on a plate in First Class could be kicked off the flight. Although her role put her in charge of in-flight service, she was only a passenger on this flight and was not flying in an official capacity. According to South Korean news agency Yonhap, Cho is the eldest daughter of Korean Air’s chairman, Cho Yang-ho. He apologized Tuesday for any inconvenience caused to SOUTH KOREA - Air traffic control passengers and said the incident must be a little different in Korea would be investigated. than it is in the United States. David Quiones, drone operator at the restaurant, said the small aircraft spun out of control during an attempt to land it on a Brooklyn Daily reporter’s hand. He said the reporter flinched during the landing, sending the drone out of control toward the photographer’s face. Quiones said the incident will not bring an end to the Mobile Mistletoe program. “If people get hurt, they’re going to come regardless. People get hurt in airplanes, they still fly,” Quiones said. “There is a risk involved — anything flying, there is risk.” Frances Karkosak, a spokeswoman for the restaurant chain, said there were no previous incidents during Mobile Mistletoe events in Long Island and Texas. “We do not let consumers touch it,” Karkosak said. TGI Fridays said in promotional material for the event last week the aim was to inspire “mobile mistletoe mischief” with the camera-outfitted drones. “If guests show a little love under the mistletoe, Fridays might just show them a little love with some nice holiday gifts,” the chain said in promoting the event.

MIKE SPEENBURG

MIKE SPEENBERG IS THE NEW AMERICAN COMIC. THE PRODUCT OF A BROKEN HOME, EXTREMELY STRANGE STEPPARENTS, AND THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM, MIKE SPEENBERG STARTED DOING STANDUP OUT OF BOREDOM IN 1998 AND HASN’T LOOKED BACK SINCE.MIKE HAS TOURED THE WORLD WITH HIS COMEDY.

DECEMBER 26-28

D.J LEWIS

ONE OF THE HOTTEST COMEDIANS TO COME OUT OF CHATTANOOGA IN YEARS. D.J IS HIP AND HILARIUOS. HIS COMEDY HAS BEEN CALLED "HILLBILLY GUTTER BELLY", ALTHOUGH HARD TO DISCRIBE IT IS NOT HARD TO LAUGH WITH AND AT D.J.

DECEMBER 31

RENO COLLIER

A FORMER P.E. TEACHER, WEST VIRGINIA NATIVE RENO COLLIER HAS ENDEARED HIMSELF TO A WIDE RANGE OF AUDIENCES FROM COLLEGE STUDENTS TO CHURCH SOFTBALL TEAMS. WITH A CONTAGIOUS LAUGH AND FRIENDLY, ALMOST INTOXICATING DEMEANOR, RENO'S OBSERVATIONS OFTEN FIND HIM RECALLING MISHAPS OF HIS WEST VIRGINIA COUSINS, HIS SCOTTISH HERITAGE, UNRULY IN-LAWS AND ALIEN ABDUCTIONS.

JANUARY 9 & 10

ROB SCHNEIDER

HIS COMBINATION OF SELF-DEPRECATING HUMOR AND GOOFBALL ANTICS EARNED HIM RAVE REVIEWS, AND HE WAS SOON OPENING FOR THE LIKES OF JAY LENO AND JERRY SEINFELD. SCHNEIDER GOT HIS BIG BREAK IN 1990, WHEN SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE PRODUCER LORNE MICHAELS HIRED HIM ON AS A WRITER FOR THE SHOW. SOON, HE WAS PERFORMING HIS OWN MATERIAL AND WAS A CAST REGULAR UNTIL 1994 WHEN HE LEFT TO PURSUE HIS FILM CAREER.

Falcons Can’t Catch Up

What a long strange trip it’s been. The Atlanta Falcons awoke Sunday morning in first place in the NFC South. When they awakened Tuesday they were in third place. Combine a loss Sunday to the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-20, a 1917 win or Carolina over Tampa Bay and Monday night’s Saints’ win over Chicago and there you have it. Granted no one from the division is going to the Super Bowl and whoever qualifies for the playoffs will be lucky to make it out of the first round. With a half game separating the three teams in the division and no one going to even make .500 the biggest obstacle to each team is not only themselves but the pious sports critics and

bloggers out there. I guess there is nothing to talk about in sports radio these days with college football over and the NFL winding down and to be quite honest with you NBA and college basketball don’t make for interesting chatter – not until tournament and playoff time at least. NASCAR has even ended and while the Atlanta made some headlines for some questionable trades the other week baseball doesn’t become anywhere near relevant until the end of February. The Falcons had spent the previous three weeks and five of 15 weeks in first or wit a share of first. That’s better than a lot of ENIGMA

the teams in the league in their respective division. It doesn’t matter what their record is they, unlike Cleveland or Miami still have a chance to make the playoffs. I really don’t care what the records are. I don’t want “rules” to be changed to appease others who aren’t happy with a team’s record that makes the playoffs. Watch college football instead.

on their opening drive things fell apart. Pittsburgh’s ball control defense held onto the ball for 10:48 in the first quarter. Atlanta’s second offensive possession didn’t technically start until the first play of the second quarter – a play Ryan and the Falcons would love to have back. Ryan was intercepted over the middle by William Gay who ran and cut through traffic 52 yards for a touchdown as things looked bad early for the home team. “It was one of those plays where they played a funky coverage and the guy just jumped the route,” said Harry Douglas, the intended receiver on the route.

The Falcons didn’t help themselves Sunday. They fell behind early against the Steelers giving up a pair of 38 yard field goals in the first quarter. The Falcon offense looked a little off balance as well. Steven Jackson had a few nice runs but Matt Ryan was off the mark on a number of throws and after gaining two first downs And to be honest the only differ-

ence in the game Sunday was the Pick-6. After spotting the Steelers a 13-point lead they got back on track but could never quite catch up. And if you looked at the stats you would see how even they were and in some cases favoring the Falcons. The defense once again only gave up 20 points. The much-maligned Atlanta rush defense held the Steelers to 45 yards on the ground and an average of two yards a carry. Ben Roethlisberger did pass for 360 yards but no touchdowns. Ryan passed for 310 yards and two touchdowns. Atlanta outgained the Steelers 407 to 398. Both were 6-of-11 on third down and the Steelers barely had the ball longer in the end 30:43 to 29:17. Roddy White made it into the Atlanta record books Sunday when he caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Ryan. The catch

gave White his 62nd touchdown, a franchise record topping the record previously held by Michael Turner. “I really didn’t think about it. I was focused on the game, trying to get us a win, but when you break records and stuff, you realize what you did after the fact, after the season is over when you go back and look at it. Right now, I’m focused on this playoff push. I want to get into the playoffs and have a chance to make it to the Super Bowl,” he said. “Like all of you that watched the game, we felt like we had lots of chances to have a different outcome. We have to take advantage of the opportunities that we have in all three phases. I think that we normally have been a very good team in the red zone, and we were not able to convert and score touchdowns there. When you do that you put yourself behind the eight ball when you’re ENIGMA

playing a good football team like the Pittsburgh Steelers. Overall, we didn’t play well enough to win the ball game. Consistency throughout is something that we’re still striving for as a team. We will move on to New Orleans and get prepared for a very interesting two weeks, not only in the NFC South, and for the people here in Atlanta, but for the people around the NFL,” said Falcons coach Mike Smith about the game. Atlanta’s destiny still is in their hands. They have two games remaining against the two teams ahead of them in the division – both of whom they have already defeated this season. It’s simple. If Atlanta wins out they are in. If not they’ll be at home soppig hot chocolate with the rest of us watching the playoffs on TV. “We can’t worry about anything other than this week. Sometimes that is playoff-type mentality. We know what’s in front of us. We know

what we’ve got to do. We’ve got to win next week. We’ve got to have the best week of practice that we’ve had this year, prepare as best we can, and cut loose when we get down to New Orleans,” said Ryan. “It’s a must win and a chance to fight and see who will be number one in our division. We’re going against a great team this week and like always, we’ve got to prepare for it and hopefully we’ll come out with a W. It’s a blessing to be in the situation we’re in. We just need to keep playing the game and God will put us in the right position,” said Devin Hester. The Falcons travel to New Orleans Sunday to face the Saints with their season on the line. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm and will be aired on Fox.

Titans Make History

Who’s up next? Jake Locker’s return to the starting lineup didn’t last long as less than one complete game before he was knocked out of the game and now placed on IR. I guess being a quarterback in Tennessee is one of the seven deadly sins. At one point this season each of the three rostered quarterbacks have bee knocked out action for an extended period of time. Locker is gone for the season and probably suited up for the last time in a Titan uniform. Charlie Whitehurst missed a number of games giving way to rookie and team future leader Zach Mettenberger but he lasted barely three games and will most likely miss the rest of the season. Monday the Titans

signed QB Jordan Palmer off the practice squad so there is the potential to knock a fourth quarterback out of the game for Tennessee. Mercifully after Sunday there are only two games left in the season. “Well you know you can pick a couple of other positions where we have had bad luck, too. But unfortunately that’s the way it is. But I want to be clear that Zach’s (Mettenberger) and Jake’s are different, but yeah you know it’s hard. That’s an important position and we have had a couple of guys get injured there,” said Titan coach Ken Whisenhunt as to if he feel snake bit at the QB position.

Geno Smith threw for 179 yards and a touchdown as well as getting cold-cocked by Titan lineman Durrell Casey in the third quarter. ties that just can’t happen and we addressed it in the locker room after the game.
