Dear Rocco, I’ve noticed that my teacher has been drinking a lot of coffee lately and I’m starting to worry about him. He’s mentioned in class that he drinks a couple cups before he heads off to school at 7, and I’ve seen him drink a whole pot of coffee before lunchtime. Even after that he still continues to brew more and more and drink it until school gets out at 4. He’s also has a one year-old son at home and he says he uses coffee to stay awake with him when he gets fussy. What’s your opinion on this? Do you think he is addicted? If so, should I try and help him out? What should I do? BB

Dear Rocco, I have been married for the past four years without children. My husband is really loving and amazing man. However he has had bouts of extreme abuse and violence with me as the target. I had to go to the hospital once. I have recently moved to the States. He is still overseas. I have met a man and we both have feelings for each other. Now we are madly in love. Every Day Above Ground Is A Good One Be Thankful For What You Have I’ve got a friend who used to tell people “ Every day above ground’s a good one” when they asked how he was doing. I always used to agree with him but have realized in the intervening years that if you are not in good health life may be a struggle. If you have your health you are rich. If you have a million dollars but can’t hardly breath or are bed ridden life may not be so rosy. I had a friend who struggled through the last year of life mostly bedridden. This was very rough on someone who had been active all his life. It was very hard to see his situation. This brought home the realization that just being alive (being above ground) might come with a hard price. Of course there

Christmas, I always try to do a positive article. I like to mention the things I am thankful for. I usually list family, friends and freedoms. I have come to realize I have neglected to list one other very important thing to be grateful for. This year I want to definitely include my health in my list of things I’m thankful for. I am in relatively good health. Sure I wear special supports in my shoes all the time, take high blood pressure medicine and am currently feeling the effects of having things cut and frozen at the dermatologist (sunscreen are people who adapt to these current good fortune. A Japanese hotel offers a room that costs only $1 per night, but there’s a catch — the guest’s entire stay is livestreamed on YouTube. Tetsuya Inoue, who took over the Asahi Ryokan hotel in Fukuoka from his grandmother last year, said he was looking for ways to boost business and was inspired by a British YouTuber who livestreamed his time at the hotel. “This is a very old ryokan and I was looking into a new business model,” Inoue said.

“Our hotel is on the cheaper side, so we need some added value, something special that everyone will talk about.” Inoue said room No. 8 is now equipped with cameras that are always livestreaming on his YouTube channel, One Dollar Hotel. He said the feed is video only and the cameras are pointed away from the bathroom area to give guests some privacy. He said the hotel loses money with the $1 stays, but once his YouTube channel reaches 4,000 view hours, he will be able to monetize the scheme with ads.

Residents of a Florida neighborhood said a car that drove in circles in reverse for about an hour only had a single occupant — a dog. Police said the driver of the car in Port St. Lucie had gotten out and left the vehicle running, and the dog then apparently knocked the vehicle into reverse. Neighbors said the car was moving for about an hour before police were able to stop it. “First I thought I saw somebody backing up but then they kept going and I’m like OK what are they doing,” a witness told local news.

Police were able to enter a code to open a door, stop the car and rescue the dog. The car hit a mailbox, some garbage cans and some bricks in front of a home while the canine was behind the wheel. “He was doing pretty good until he hit the mailbox. He went around for about an hour without hitting anything at all.” A West Virginia man admitted to authorities that he married one of his two daughters after help-

Larry Paul McClure, 55, said in a letter to state investigators that he and his daughters; 31-year-old Amanda Michelle Naylor McClure and 32-year-old Anna Marie Choudhry, plotted the murder of John McGuire, who was dating Amanda, the Bluefield Daily Telegraph reported. A West Virginia State Police officer testified in a recent court hearing that the trio hit McGuire in the head with a bottle of wine, tied him up and injected him with two vials of meth. They then strangled him and buried him in a shallow grave on the property of a home where they were staying in the Skygusty section of the state. In his admission letter, McClure wrote the murder was his daughter Amanda’s idea. “I cannot tell you why Amanda wanted John McGuire dead,” Larry McClure wrote. Police allege Amanda and her father

The nerve of some people. Andrew Collins, who works as a pilot for United Airlines, decided to show off his goodies while staying in a Westin hotel at Denver International Airport. The veteran pilot said when he woke up in the morning he opened the curtains and began walking around his room naked. Someone saw him and decided to complain. “That didn’t mean I was standing there doing any lewd behavior,” Collins reported. “I just had an expectation of privacy.” Probably because his room was on the 10th floor. Sounds like deviant behavior to me. Collins’ attorney said the two responding Denver police officers went too far when they entered the room without a warrant and arrested the captain for indecent exposure. The case was eventually dismissed, but not before Collins was suspended for half a year from his job. The City of Denver agreed to pay $300,000 for the wrongful arrest. Not bad for showing off your willie. A Maine school is celebrating the 43rd anniversary of a Twinkie that has been on display at the school since being unwrapped by a science teacher. George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill said the Twinkie originally unwrapped by teacher Roger Bennatti in 1976 as part of a lesson on food preservatives is marking its 43rd year at the school. The school said the Twinkie is still the same size and shape as a fresh snack cake, but its color has faded to gray and its texture has turned rough. The Twinkie was on display in Bennatti’s classroom until he retired in 2004 and passed it along to Libby Rosemeier, the school’s dean of students and one of the students who was in his class for the original Twinkie lesson.

Quit Looking In Your RearView Mirror Quit looking in the rearview mirror! When you are driving and look in your rear view mirror to see what is behind you, your eyes are not focused on what is right in front of you. Hence the reason when driving, we typically only look in the rearview mirror for a few seconds at a time, if at all. We do this because we know that the situation on the road in front of us can change instantly. (which is why you shouldn’t text and drive people, sorry not sorry) Your surroundings can change in a matter of seconds. Therefore we are paying attention to the road ahead. So why in life do we waste time focusing on events and/or moments from the past to the point we can not see what is going on today. Let me say this another way. When you are fretting over events that happened in your past, you are consumed with events that you can’t change and are missing out on the present. Your life is moving on, with or without you. Life is like the car behind you on the road that speeds past, in a passing zone of course, because you are going so slow. Even if you are going the speed limit. You are completely distracted by a previous incident that you are no longer aware you are the person creating more wrecks. If you are the person in the car driving past everyone on the road because they are going so slow, you my friend, need to slow down. You are the other end of the spectrum, so to speak. Quit being in such a hurry that you can’t embrace the moment directly in front of you. You are so consumed with worry or fear that you are constantly running from one place to another. (You could also be running late. You running behind is the cause of not being in the present, and always focusing on what’s next.) The fear of missing out on something that everyone else has is consuming your life. You are always focused on your next move, permanently living in the future.

Never fully being present, and always distracted. Your mind is being pulled in multiple directions, never accomplishing a complete thought before it bounces into another lane. You are then left feeling drained and unworthy. As if you cannot become successful in life no matter how prepared you are. Slow down.

Quit cheating yourself and everyone around you. The people in your life deserve more from you. You deserve more from yourself. Be intentional with your time. Your people want you to be present and aware. And when I say present I am mean the quality of time and the attention you give is more important than the quantity of time. If you are only able to see your people for a short period of time, cherish that time. Don’t fret over when you will see them again, or complain about how short your time is. Be intentional with the time you are given. Fill that time making memories that will last a lifetime. I will say it again, it is more about quality than quantity.

no such access. When we have unlimited access to something we take that thing (relationship, toy, job, etc,) for granted. We set that “thing” to the side until we are ready for it. We assume that person/thing will always be there even though we have either been too busy looking back or hustling into the future. Either way you have

Here we are at the beginning of December, full fledged Holiday Hustle. This season, instead of spending your time shopping and wrapping gifts, make yourself the gift. Be present. High end toys and expensive gadgets have a short shelf life before they are forgotten about. Since we do not know what our shelf life is, make the most of the moments in front of you. It may be your last encounter. This year I am saving myself the added stress of shopping for family and friends, no one is getting a present. Sorry, parents! Let common sense and American values prevail. Bitch and bastard are words that are not used often enough, everyone knows people these words fit, and they should be reminded. Well, enough for now, Until Next Time, Paul Burke Sr.

Do You Live In A Waffle House? Around the 15th century waffles began to evolve. Basically a batter was laced between two iron grids, some quite elaborate in design, and eaten as a sweet as well as used in religious ceremonies. The batter was often flavored with flower water and honey, cooked and served with extra honey or fruit and enjoyed as a dessert rather than a breakfast food. Similar to the French, the finished product could be kept for several days and traveled well. It was first introduced to Colonists by foodie president Thomas Jefferson in 1789, who returned from France with the first known waffle iron to grace our shores (no invention went unnoticed by foodie Thomas) who proceeded to enjoy and serve waffles at his state dinners as a final course, along with fresh berries and cream.

In North America, Belgian (spelled used. First showcased in 1958 at strawberries. Moving forward, they with an “a”) waffles are a variety Expo 58 in Brussels, Belgium by a were further popularized during with a lighter batter, larger European, they found their way the 1964 New York World’s Fair at Flushing Meadows Park in Queens. These waffles were introduced by Maurice Vermersch of Brussels, Belgium primarily based on a simplified recipe from Brussels. He wisely decided to change the name to the Bel-Gem Waffle at first, after observing that many Americans could not identify Brussels as the capital of Belgium. (And even worse, many people would associate them with brussels sprouts, America’s most despised food.) For centuries waffles were primarily eaten in Western and Northern European countries and there are many variations. Here is a quick rundown: The Liège waffle is a richer, denser, sweeter, and chewier waffle; native to the region of Eastern Belgium and alternately known as gaufres de chasse; Flemish waffles, or Gaufres à la Flamande, are a specialty of northern France and portions of western Belgium. made with yeast;

Chicken and waffles - popular in Southern and soul food cuisine, but also attributed to Pennsylvania Dutch cooks in the 1800s; they are still served at many regional restaurants and rank right up there with chicken fried steak and other southern favorites; not rocket science here, pieces of fried chicken are placed on top of a waffle and drenched in syrup; In the first part of the twentieth century, no self-respecting kitchen was without the proverbial waffle iron, often a popular wedding gift, and the breakfast of choice on weekends with bacon or ham. In 1953, busy homemakers put away their heavy waffle irons for good when “Eggo” frozen waffles were introduced, a great time saver and a quick breakfast, simply dropped into the toaster. To this day they remain a big seller along with pancakes and french toast. In 2017 alone, 164.8 million Americans consumed the three, either packaged or homemade. And the popular restaurant chain Waffle House has sold 877,388,027 since opening their doors in 1955. So whether you prefer your version on the run or as an elaborate dish smothered with berries and cream, they are easily available, no iron required. Kind of a perma press breakfast.

Hollywood Asks Is Comedy Dead? The Hollywood writers and produc- percent less on average.” ers cannot understand why no one is interested in watching their sitcoms anymore on TV? Well, did it ever occur to them that some of this stuff isn’t all that funny anymore? The movie industry’s comedy films are also getting killed at the box office. Stand-up comedy is doing OK, but in the new PC world, comedy routines often turn off half of the audience during any given skit, throw in politics and yes, you get some headlines but comedians are divided and conquered. What happened? No, what really happened? Is Hollywood in denial? Remember the audience is always correct, if they don’t like it, it just ain’t that good. And, ‘if and when’ they don’t like it, they sure as hell don’t want to pay for it, or spend their precious time listening or watching it on TV. Now then, there was an interesting in article in the Wall Street Journal recently titled; “Comedy Slump Not a Laughing Matter,” by Ben Fritz published on June 26, 2018 which stated: “Last year’s åmost successful comedy, “Girl’s Trip,” took in $117 million in the US and Canada. The last time the year’s highest grossing comedy grossed so little was 1995, when ticket costs were 52

Indeed, it hardly matters what it’s called or why it keeps happening if no one in Hollywood, late-night comedy notices, because now that audiences have been split in half and every show is catering to the same half of the remaining market, no one is making any money, and audiences, yes, even on the left are getting bored with it all; it’s just not funny anymore. And despite popular belief in NYC, LA and DC, our president does not bathe in Cheetos dust. Just sayin’. The article also stated: “Traditional jokes, then they are ignorant, or - Lance Winslow comedies are struggling for oxygen out of touch with reality. at the box office, caught between superhero sequels that integrate laughs and a vast buffet of standup specials, sitcoms, amateur pranks and original films on digital services like Netflix and YouTube.” What I, as a film critic writer, have noticed, is that every sit-com seems to brush up against the PC culture and then quickly back away, and attack the politically expedient right-side of the equation. Perhaps, this is because the comedy writers all live and work in areas where most everyone has left-leaning political views, and

Arrival of Autumn Having started with humble roots, in a small city in the middle of nowhere Arrival of Autumn always knew it was never about where they came from, but where they had the drive and willingness to go. Arrival of Autumn started as a band with a mission to play music without compromise and carve their way through the music scene on their own terms. Coming from a small city in Northern Canada, this was a necessary strategy, since the band didn’t come up in a big city scene with regular promoters, venues and attendees. The band released their first major label release last spring called Harbinger on Nuclear Blast. We recently caught bass player Kevin Student just before sound check to fill us out about the new album, tour and what to look forward to from the band.

own promoters, our own bookers, if we wanted to play a show we rented the place out and put on a show. That was just what we like to do. We like to do it, we’ll find a way to do it and that’s kind of what this band’s always been about. We

Leading up to the recording of the actual full length, we actually recorded with him two times before. There’s a little bit of history there. The first time we recorded we sent some stuff off and said it would be cool to record an EP with Jason Suecof. And so we did that and he was like, “You guys are pretty good. Come down and we’ll make an EP”. And so we did and he was so impressed by it that he took it upon himself to kind of market it out to labels and things like that. We had no idea. We had this EP and we were planning a tour around this EP and then he called back and goes, “Nuclear Blast is interested and you guys should get have a drive and passion and find down here right away”. And they ways to do it. wanted to hear more of our material. So we went down and recordYYoouu gguuyy ss rr eell eeaass eedd yyoouu rr ffii rrss tt m maajj oorr ed more material with him, doing

he was like, “Monte Connor wants to hear more. I’ve got an opening in a month.” Which was basically when we were supposed to go on tour. “You guys come down. I’ll free up some time and space and get another album through.” We pretty much recorded our best stuff for that first EP and we had the band sit down and we’re like, “How do you guys feel about this?” We got this opportunity. We’re going to have to cancel the tour and this sucks. We hate to cancel, but the worst-case scenario was we were going to go down there, record an EP with Jason Suecof and not get signed. And even going off that we were like let’s do this. We love doing this, love the band so we have to swing for the fences. What else are we doing here? We could be sitting at home for the rest of our lives. After that whole process Nuclear Blast was interested and wanted a full album. To answer the question how it was like to record with Jason Suecof – it was both very comfortable and mind blowing. Working with the guy, he’s like a mad genius of sorts. He gets what we’re really trying to go for in our own way, so it was very comfortable. There were times it would hit me and I would go for a recording break and look at all the plaques on the wall for some of my favorite albums – Black Dahlia Murder, Trivium, and the list goes on. It’s like, cool I’m here, I’m there and go down and sit in the room with him and it’s like so alive because we’re working out and recording on the album. It’s more daunting in retrospect than it actually was when we were there in the studio recording.

Extremely. (both laugh) It’s never been a thing where we’ve talked to each other and you need to go as hard as possible. Everyone just kind of does their own thing. Doing our own thing, our energy level just comes out. We’ll plan around that. We don’t put the most absolute shredding, difficult song at the end of the set, not that any of our songs are super easy anyway. When it comes to this tour for our last song, it’s kind of like this is it – this is the one. If I’ve got any energy left, let it all out now. Part of it is just having a good time on stage. It’s fun to do that and get the feedback from the crowd.

We have written close to 20 songs and some of those were in further stages of completion. This is one of the cool things about Nuclear Blast. Before going in we were going to write, write, write everything we possibly can, have a bunch of different styles and variations of songs. We went through our A&R, Monte and said, “What kind of album to you want to hear first? We’ve got all these different songs.” And he’s like, his direction was he didn’t care, just make it heavy. The label completely stepped back from micromanaging any bit of our sound. From there it was up to us to decide. We picked songs – they all came from the same writers so the all carry similar elements. They’re all very different songs. We actually wanted to pick songs that were coming from different places and different things. Our opener, “Hurricane on the Horizon” leans more metalcore – whatever that word means. It’s got some open note stuff but also very thrashy. The next song on the album, “End of Existence” is pretty much a love song to death. I’ve got pretty well ripping bass lead solo part in that. It’s shredding complete – no clean vocals. And then we have songs like “Better Off Without” – I don’t know if you’d call it experimental. There’s some synth stuff. We wanted to run the gamut. We’re all influenced by a lot of different styles. I really wouldn’t call us a progressive band. We’re influenced by a lot of bands. We didn’t want to write the same song ten times. We wanted to write a bunch of different songs

It’s been far and away the best tour this band has ever done. Not to slight the other band; there are other bands touring with us. The crowd’s been crazy. A lot of things just seem to be clicking right now. Our name is getting out there more and more, so we’re getting people coming to the shows who know who we are. But even then we’re getting a lot of people that have no idea – never listened to us before and they’re going nuts for it. In Flames – from the band to the crew have been so helpful for us. I think that’s like one of the things for them too. A band looks better if their opener is killing it every night. You get a better show that’s being put on. We’re definitely firing up the crowds for In Flames. They’ve been enabling us to do that. We really can’t say enough good things on how we’ve been treated and the other groups on it. The fans have been going absolutely apeshit for us. It’s been a dream, really.

We’re definitely resting on our laurels. Going into the studio we had a bunch of songs in states of completion. It kind of came to figuring out in the studio – okay, let’s do this group of songs. And then it was like, what about this one? If we record that one we have to get rid of one of these that we don’t have the time or budget for. At that time we had a lot of material and we’ve been writing since. I think we could wrap up this tour and go into the studio, but at the same time we still have a lot more roadwork on this album to do. People are still discovering us and we’re having a blast with this album. Of course there’s that itch and pending studio time we can work it out whenever that might be and we’ll be ready for it.

Shooter Jennings: Just A Good Ol’ Boy

Just think - if it wasn’t for a coin flip, or better yet, a lost coin flip, I might not have been able to see Shooter Jennings in concert recently at Songbirds.

Jennings was a member of The Crickets, Buddy Holly’s band. Yes, that Buddy Holly. Holly’s life was cut short on the “day the music died (February 3, 1959).

No, I’m not the gambling man like my old pal Jesse used to be (and yes, I want the money you owe me), I’m talking about Shooter’s dad, the legendary Waylon Jennings. Literally over 60 years ago before he was an icon in “Outlaw Country”,

The Winter Dance Party tour was rough for Holly and The Crickets as well as Ritchie Valens and JP Richardson. The tour bus kept breaking down and the heat didn’t work. With all these issues in the dead of winter, Holly chartered a Beechcraft

Bonanza for himself and the band to get to the next city faster and get out of the elements. As the story goes, Valens and Richardson aka “The Big Bopper” wanted on the plane. A coin was tossed and Valens got a seat and Jennings, depending on who’s telling the story either voluntarily gave up his seat to Richardson or lost it based on the flip of a coin. Regardless, what happened shortly after was what is considered rock and roll’s first tragedy. The plane crash not long after takeoff due in part to the weather and Holly, Valens and Richardson – all with songs on the charts at the time, perished. Thus the iconic phrase, “the day the music died” was born.
