The Gun Next to You There is a meme or post going around on Facebook that starts, “I stand behind you in line at the store with a smile on my face... and a gun under my shirt and you are none the wiser, yet you are safer for having me next to you. I won’t shoot you.” Later in the meme it says, “However, rest assured that if a lunatic walks into the store and pulls a rifle , I will draw my pistol and protect myself and my family...” Thanks to our Tennessee lawmakers via House Bill 1264 there will probably be more people next to you carrying guns. These people will have been able to get a Handgun Carry permit with little to no training. This bill will allow Tennessee residents to simply watch (or play) an online video as their training to get a handgun carry permit. There is no provision for any live fire (as required in the current handgun permit training).
Does this scare me? Well there is a story that years ago a NASCAR driver was asked if he was “scared” during a pretty bad crash during a race. His response was “I was a little concerned”. I am far more than
concerned. First off; full disclosure. I am a lifetime NRA member. I fully support the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. I endorse the responsible carry and
use of firearms. I have taught the Tennessee Handgun Safety course (Handgun permit class) for over twenty years, so I endorse civilians carrying firearms for self-protection. I was a police officer for over
it most likely will be too long. Americans should be able to protect themselves. Self-protection is a recognized basic human right and has been upheld by United States courts for hundreds of years. I have no problem whatsoever with people carrying a firearm for selfdefense. AS LONG AS they have had some basic training in the legalities of using a firearm in self-defense and have shown a basic ability to physically operate the handgun. This new bill would allow people to get a handgun carry permit by simply watching a video. There is no requirement to be in a monitored classroom. There is no requirement to show a very basic proficiency with a handgun. I think thirty years and will be the first this should concern us all. one to tell you that you are your and your family’s first line of Now let me address the “constitudefense. carry a gun; the Constitution says so”. The Tennessee Handgun Carry permit system has been in its current form since 1996. If anyone has challenged its “constitutionality” in that time they have not been successful. This system has worked well. The number of Tennessee permit holders who have gotten into legal trouble is very low. Permit applicants are taught as to what criminal and civil legal trouble they can get into if they misuse force. They very infrequently misuse their weapons or commit infractions with their handguns. So the state of Tennessee regulates who can publicly carry a handgun. They simply ask you to attend an eight-hour course as a requirement to apply. Several states require more training than eight hours. Eight hours is VERY minimal training time to cover safety, legal issues, the fundamentals of shooting and have a basic shooting proficiency test. Yet some politician, Andy Holt, thought eight hours was too much to provide safety for you and your family, Holt was quoted as saying, “you know, if we’re talking about having to take a class that requires eight hours of classroom instruction, then that means I’m going to have to be away from my family, away for an entire day,” Really? Number one: eight hours is not an entire day. Number two: eight hours is not a lot of time to get safety, legal, and marksmanship training and show basic proficiency with a handgun. Yet if this teaches a person not to shoot someone over trespassing, shoplifting simple assault or other crimes that are not defensible by deadly force what is that worth? If this teaches someone to keep their finger off the trigger until they are ready to fire so they don’t shoot the wrong person when startled, is that worth being in class eight hours? I guess Mr. Holt thinks that can be taught via online video. I disagree. When a student is reminded by a human not to commit a safety violation like pointing a weapon at someone who is not a threat or having their finger on the trigger when it shouldn’t be, this carries far more ‘weight” than a reminder on a video.
the state fixing something that is not broken? The current permit system has been working since 1996. As I mentioned before with few occurrences of issues with permit holders. It appears to me that one legislator felt inconvenienced and decided to change things. Other legislators jumped on the “it’s a pro gun thing backed by the NRA “ bandwagon and supported the bill also. As I said before, I am a lifetime NRA member, however, I do not agree with everything they do. I think this is a DANGEROUS to let people carry firearms in public who have little or no training.
Another issue with this bill is the issue of reciprocity. As of now Tennessee has mutual agreements with several other states where that state recognizes Tennessee’s permits and Tennessee recognizes theirs. Will these states still recognize Tennessee handgun permits since the new permit is not for carrying the weapon outside of Tennessee? If a law enforcement officer in one of these reciprocal agreement states has an encounter with a Tennessee permit holder with a non-enhanced permit how are they to know the status of that permit? Will they be able to check it via computer? Will that state feel it is too confusing for their officers and just stop recognizing Tennessee’s permit? There is already a precedent for this. Two states stopped recognizing Tennessee’s handgun permit when Tennessee changed its law to allow 18,19 and 20-year-old people who are currently in the armed forces or who have been honorably discharged to get a handgun permit.
I know I may draw the ire of some hardcore gun rights people but I feel the need to give my opinion. I see so many people who know almost nothing about firearms and who have never fired a gun applying for a permit. However, they are getting some training in the permit class. How many people applying under the new lesser permit system will actually watch this training video? I know of one big organization that tried video training on the As a handgun permit instructor I honor system. Many people “cheat- am very worried about the effects ed” and did not watch the video. They just let it run on their computer while they did other things. Many will likely play on their phone while they should be watching the video. So what parts will they watch and what will they miss? Will someone end up being shot due to the lack of training because someone did not watch the video? Or because they didn’t have to sit in a classroom, listen to a human being and so be inconvenienced? I hope not. This bill allows Tennessee permit holders who have not received the “old school” training to carry their handgun concealed. This is at odds with most other states that may allow open carry with less or no training. Usually more training is required to carry the weapon concealed. “Open carry” is when the weapon is carried out in the open, visible to casual observation. This brings up the question as to how police officers will know if a person has an “enhanced” permit where they can carry open or concealed. Or the lesser permit that only allows concealed carry.
Another question I have is why is ENIGMA

of this bill on public safety. I think it would be a good idea for people to be required to take a safety class just to buy a gun. Now because someone doesn’t want to be inconvenienced people with little or no training may be carrying a gun in a restaurant, movie theater, church, sporting event, grocery store etc. near you, your loved ones and friends. What if they overreact to a situation? What if they start spraying bullets or miss their target hitting an innocent person? Or the bullet goes through the bad guy hitting an innocent person because they weren’t careful about their backstop - any or all due to a lack of training? Question: Are people allowed to get a driver’s license without driving? Can they learn to drive just by watching a video? Am I afraid of the damage that may be caused by this bill? Yes I am. A concerned mother in Alaska is urging other parents to check their children’s gifts after finding a surprise in one meant for her daughter. Brianna Ridge says that her mother bought a doll at the Walmart in Wasilla. While wrapping the doll as a present for her granddaughter, she noticed a small piece of paper sticking out of the box. As it turns out, the paper was actu-

The card did not contain any information that indicates any organization is responsible for the hidden message. As a

The university said the house is half the size of one that was declared the world’s smallest when it was created last year in France. “I think projects like this create science curios-

Hundreds of shoppers packed into a shopping mall when suddenly a shower of gifts rain down on them from a grateful management. The happy recipients are thrilled with their gift cards and coupons and the holiday season is made just a little bit merrier. Unfortunately whoever thought up the stunt didn’t realize how quickly a crowd can turn into a mob. Balloons
filled with trivial freebies such as coffee vouchers and free parking sparked a wild stampede at a Sydney, Australia shopping centre leaving multiple shoppers injured. Video captured by terrified onlookers shows the moment the 150strong crowd of people at Westfield Parramatta surged forward to grab balloons falling from above, filled with gift cards and discount vouchers. Police and paramedics rushed to the scene just after midnight after reports a number of people had been hurt in a crowd rush. One victim of the rush was the Westfield Santa, who was behind a wooden sign looking on when the suspended balloons fell from netting. defending my CDC (Chattanooga Drinking Champion) Title Belt in the coming weeks. All challengers are welcome. You must be at least 21 years old, Irish, and male, to even have a prayer. Although ladies are allowed to challenge, I must warn against it. Drunken women unmercifully throw themselves at me and I since I am a selfprofessed gentleman, it would probably be in your best interest to stay away. And if you happen to be the loser of the last CDC (Michael Knaby), you will have your rematch, but the outcome will be the same. Hail to the skinny one!

I received this e-mail several months ago that contained simply a list of facts. There was no direct religious or political message attached to it, but I think after reading the e-mail, I had a good idea of what the person who sent it to me was saying.
Now, for your benefit I am going to share that e-mail with you.

This week I have comprised what I hope will be a humorous list based solely upon many unforgettable evenings spent within the frightening, but ever entertaining walls of Chattanooga’s local bars. Other offensive tattoos: a) butterflies on one’s lower back. b) Celtic knots representing some vague sense of familial devotion to an unknown Clan, likely the Celtic version of Hell’s Angels. c) swastikas, especially when placed noticeably on one’s neck or forehead. (i.e. Charles Manson) d) Any Asian character. It still surprises me that so many eighteen year-old’s are willing to spend their hard-earned money having letters and/or numbers from a completely foreign language picked at random by their “tattoo artist” placed on their calves or biceps.

Plus if you’re willing to show it you should probably consider this fact: statistically speaking, 3 out of every 4 people that show their bellies should not.

25 Looks Good On You Too: Collective Soul Celebrates 25 Years It seems like only yesterday that Collective Soul broke out and controlled everyone’s radio with songs like “Shine”, “Gel”, “December” and “Precious Declaration” just to name a very few. A long time hometown and crowd favorite it’s hard to believe (not actually) that they’ve had seven number one singles – four in a row at one point. All from a band that is non-assuming and a goodwill ambassador for the business. With precision-like skill they continue to put one good album and one good song out one after another. Unfortunately it seems at times they get overlooked for other “flavors of the month”
but now celebrating 25 years together it’s time to give the band it’s proper due. We caught up with bassist Will Turpin, one of the three core members (along with brothers Ed and Dean Roland) who have been there from the very beginning on the eve of the end of their 25th anniversary tour that ends in their hometown of Atlanta, GA to talk about all things Collective Soul.

Without my father in the studio, that was the fertile soil that was given to do what we wanted to do. Same thing with Ed. He wasn’t my father’s son; he was pretty dang close. They were as tight as could be. My father was one of his main mentors through the whole song-
writing process. My dad gave him the green light to go in there and work on whatever he wanted to whenever a paying customer wasn’t there. Like he said, Ed was given the fertile ground to start what became Collective Soul.

I played with an Ernie Ball Bongo Bass live. It has an exception tone up and down the neck. It’s a road warrior. Those are my favorites. I pull out all kinds of stuff in the studio. I enjoy trying to use a Rickenbacker when the song calls for it. Paul McCartney played one basically. There’s a PRS bass I own that’s on a lot of Collective Soul tracks. But for the most part my favorites are Leo Fender. You design that first one in the late ‘50s and it still today is probably – the Fender Jazz is a bass player’s number one pick. life. The reason they buy the tickets, the hits to them are more than hits. The hits are the soundtrack to their life and their memories. I’ve got a real sore spot actually for bands who think they’re too cool to play their hits. If you can’t find a way each night with a packed house and excited people singing your songs; if you can’t find a way to enjoy that I think you’re outtricking yourself – you’re trying to be too cool for school and you’re missing the whole point. You’re absolutely missing the whole point. Are we dying to play “Shine” at soundcheck? No, we’re not gong to play it at soundcheck, but every night we perform that tune its exceptional energy and we embrace the hell out of it. We understand how fortunate we are. Again, people allowed us to be a part of their lives.

My whole life all I’ve done is music – symphonies and concert bands, I’ve even played in some operas. All that stuff broadened my horizon. It gives you a different perspective. It also allows you different experiences that you can bring to rock and roll. I know what a Wagner opera sounds like. I know Beethoven’s Fifth. I understand the power and strength of a string quartet. In general as far as rock and roll goes, I picked up the bass. The bassist I was playing with – all the guys at that point weren’t quite fitting in. Before I even picked up a bass I told Ed: I called Ed first and told him I’d play bass. And for me it wasn’t what I could bring as an individual, it was more when you get these pieces together chemistry-wise/vibe-wise and musical direction-wise you’re not going to have a whole lot of questions. We’re all going to be able to take care of business. And like I said, I remember putting these songs ENIGMA

Ed had worked at Reel2Reel all those years and worked with so many different bands, it wasn’t like we were rehearsing in our parent’s basement. Before we even hit we had a lot of friends in the industry and we had spent a lot of time – whether it was me at Georgia State School of Music, we had spent a lot of time around the scene, so to speak. We’re definitely homers from Atlanta. And again, I’ll point to Ed’s songwriting. I think the strength of the songwriting endears all our fans to us. The strength of the songwriting.

(laughs) I mean, that’s what that song’s written about. It’s written about coming together as humanity, really, even though we came together as a band. It’s personalities and the musical thing is open your ears first. I’m going to tip my hat to the current lineup. I met Johnny Rabb in 2011. It’s like new blood. Johnny Rabb’s our drummer. It’s like a blood infusion when you get when you get somebody that on a personal level – person to person become close friends quickly and on a musical level somebody we can learn from as much as he could learn from us. And he opens his ears. It’s all really about opening your ears, not how many notes you can play; what idea you have. It’s about opening your ears and letting those frequencies soak in. That’s been our extreme pleasure and Jesse Triplett
started playing with us in 2013 I believe. Right now the current lineup – it’s our second record with the current lineup, I feel like we’ve done some of our best work in 25 years and I feel like on a personal level it’s just a complete joy to play music with these guys. You’ll notice it on stage. People say it all the time: “You guys still have fun on stage”. It like, well, I guess I should be thankful that but I don’t even think about it. We are just having fun. He has an idea – he’ll tell us an idea on a rhythm part. For the most part we come up with ideas and we talk amongst the band what we’re going to do here – this turnaround, this change. Arrangements and production – all of our style is on the arrangement and production. Ed’s a master with the lyrics, the melodies. Without everybody being able to put in a style without forcing it; like I said, it’s about making the right choices for the song. Our style’s in there. It turns out no one person sounds like Collective Soul. It’s been one of our strengths. Whenever you hear Collective Soul it’s like, oh, that’s Collective Soul – and that’s how we do it. Everybody get to be part of the sauce and we’re starting out with some badass melody and lyric ideas that Ed has.

THIS MONTH IN ROCK HISTORY 1199 5544 Four days before his 20th birthday, a young truck driver named Elvis Presley paid $4 to record a ten-inch acetate demo at the Memphis Recording Service, an open-to-thepublic business run by Sam Phillips. The two songs Presley recorded, “Casual Love Affair” and “I’ll Never Stand In Your Way”, impressed Phillips enough that he had Elvis record his first professional sides for Sun Records the following August. 11 99 5588 Little Richard left Rock and Roll and enrolled in bible school at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama. Richard explained that while flying over the Philippines on tour, the wing of his plane caught fire and his prayers that the flames go out were answered, so he decided to dedicate the rest of his life to God. Some of the members of his touring band found work with James Brown’s Famous Flames. During his four years in school, Richard still had hit records with previously recorded material like “Good Golly Miss Molly”. By the time he returned to music in 1962, the British Invasion had started and the best Richard could do was a minor UK hit, “He Got What He Wanted”. In 1965, Jimi Hendrix backed him on “I Don’t Know What You’ve Got, But It’s Got Me”, but the song barely cracked the US Hot 100, topping out at number 92.

Otis Redding’s “Sittin’ On The Dock of the Bay” is released, six weeks after he was killed in a plane crash. It will become the first posthumous number-one single in US chart history.
