LIKE A ROCK Detroit has always been a musical hotbed, and Bob Seger is one of its greatest rock and roll talents. His was a long, slow climb to the top, and his overdue breakthrough – with Night Moves, in 1976 – attested to his belief in himself and rock music as a dream worth pursuing. For more than ten years Seger labored on rock’s fringe. Sustained by a rabid fan base, he cut some fine albums and performed at least 200 shows a year. As Dave Marsh wrote, “He had all the requisites of greatness: the voice, the songwriting, the performance onstage, the vision and the ambition.” When Seger finally broke through, assuming a rightful place among such fellow travelers as the Eagles and Bruce Springsteen, it was sweet vindication for all the years spent in the shadows. Moreover, a string of multiplatinum albums - including Stranger in Town, Against the Wind, The Distance and Like a Rock - kept him on top. Only Seger’s semi-retirement to raise a family has lowered his profile in recent years Seger and his Silver Bullet Band roll into Atlanta Saturday where they will perform along with J. AFTER THE STORM Charleston, South Carolina-based indie folk duo Shovels & Rope consist of married singer/songwriters Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst. Like Trent, who also played with the indie rock band The Films, Hearst had spent the years prior pursuing a solo career, utilizing her raw yet melodious and expressive voice to deliver a handful of albums, one of which landed a single, "Hell's Bells," in the 2010 season of True Blood. The husband and wife duo will stop by Track 29 Tuesday to perform.

So Long Mr. Cub Over the weekend another part of my youth died. Baseball legend Ernie Banks died one week shy of his 84th birthday. While I was alive for about half of his career with the Chicago Cubs, I never got to see him play – in person or TV. In fact, he had already retired by the time I fully recognized his name. I was born in an era that did not have the convenience of cable TV or the internet. Baseball and most of other professional and college sports were relegated to being aired one day out of the week. It wasn’t until 1970 that Monday Night Football – a true novelty at the time that we had a “bonus” game. Baseball, by contrast was in the “olden days” a hometown, localized sport. Before you could watch any team on any day or time you cheered for the team closest to where you lived.

Bob Gibson, Lou Brock and more. You notice something about the list? They are all black. As kids we didn’t care about the color of skin the way we do now and how aware I am personally aware of it now. Without sounding preachy we judge these guys on how they played the game. We proudly wore their jerseys, collected their trading cards and got mom and dad to buy us the bat model bearing their name. Not because of what they were but who they were. Granted, we lived in an era before social media and mega press coverage so we knew little about their private lives, but even in today’s revisionist history era not much has tainted our opinion of our childhood heroes. And back then we didn’t think Kids of my generation were about the color of their skin. more unique than any other generation to date. we were brought together by a common interest like sports. Sure, we were curious about each other, but we didn’t feel any prejudice or animosity. We actually thought it was cool to have a black friend – or any other nationality. It wasn’t a big deal like it seems to be now. We learned from each other, even enlightened each other about who we were – and we didn’t care about the color of our skin. Now it seems to be an issue everywhere. That’s one of the things I liked about Banks. He seemed happy-go lucky, happy to be able to play baseball as a professional and be a role model/hero to all not just others of his race. To my knowledge he never addressed the situation like Hank Aaron has the past couple of years. To be honest Aaron kind of tarnished his star to be as he what he said came across as sour grapes. I have no knowledge what it was like to be a minority in the ‘50s ad ‘60s as all I am concerned about is today. We can’t rewrite history and despite idiots that judged him by the color of his skin others like me celebrated who he was and wanted to be like him and for

when he appeared in an episode of “Married with Children” along with Johnny Bench and Joe Namath when Al and Jefferson sneak out to attend the opening of a new sports bar where the three sports legends are there for the opening ceremonies. It was far more entertaining than the time Hammering Hank appeared on “Happy Days”.

all intents and purposes still cheer for him and our memories of him playing for the Braves. Granted, I didn’t go through what he did, but why are you holding it against me? Banks was a silent, gentle baseball giant. He was a rarity, especially in today’s sports. He played his entire career in one

city - in fact the name Ernie Banks is synonymous with the city of Chicago. Plus he seemed to be a good sport. I really began to dig him even more almost 20 years after he retired

Banks seemed to take in stride who he was, didn’t show regret for playing on a team that hasn’t been to the World Series now in over a century. He was happy being himself and everyone that got the pleasure of meeting him all gush about how nice and one of the guys he was. I wish more athletes would take a page out of Ernie Banks’ book. The world not only needs more sports icons, but good sports.

MEDICAL DEBT NO 1 CAUSE OF FILING FOR BANKRUPTCY Medical debt is the leading cause of filing for bankruptcy in the United States. Medical debt can be accrued in a number of ways, but is most often due to a lack of proper health insurance or unforeseen medical conditions and emergencies that are not adequately covered by insurance policies. With the advent of the Affordable Care Act many people are hoping that this trend will not continue, but as of right now it remains a very real and pressing concern for millions of Americans, many of whom are faced with overwhelming debt and unsure where to turn.

debt as a big part of their problem. These debts come in the form of unexpected emergency room visits, which can be expensive even if a person has health insurance and are prohibitively so if the person does not. They also come in the form of dental work, which is a separate kind of insurance not generally covered by basic health plans. Dental work can easily run into the thousands of dollars, and is the kind of work that, when needed, is absolutely needed ASAP.

Another huge factor in outstanding medical debt that gives people thoughts of filing for bankruptcy is the outof-pocket costs of prescripReasons for Medical Debt medications. Politics & Patriotism I guess everyone who is still on Facebook has their own reasons. Personally, I like being able to communicate with so many of my high schooland college friends. I finished high school in Oklahoma and went to school in Turkey (my dad was in the military) for seventh grade through the first half of my sophomore year. I can’t imagine that I’d be in contact with any of my high school friends if it wasn’t for FB or some other ubiquitous social media platform. Likewise, I haven’t seen many of my college friends in years… but we share life updates and occasional messages via FB… …My other great joy on FB is baiting conservatives into a tizzy. When I saw Michael Moore’s Facebook post detailing his support for our armed forces and our veterans, I just had to share it. You surely remember that Moore was blasted by a steady stream of hatred after his “tweet” that

“snipersare cowards” went viral not long after the premiere of “American Sniper.” Moore’s uncle was killed by a Japanese sniper in World War II and the director says he was just passing on his father’s opinion. After over a week of abuse regarding his comment about the movie, Moore went on FB to “set the record straight” on his support for U.S. troops… …In his post, Moore detailed his long history of support for active duty military personnel and U.S. veterans. Those on active duty get free admission to Moore’s movie theater in Traverse City, Michigan… 365 days a year. He hires lots of veterans to work on his film projects and refuses to do business with companies that are not pro-vet when it comes to hiring practices. He allows local veterans groups to use his theater to meet on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) support issues.

He hosts quarterly PTSD summits and has also hosted a conference to start a jobs movement for vets in Traverse City. Moore took vets, soldiers and their families on a 60-city tour of the country so their concerns could be heard… … The kicker: Moore is showing “American Sniper” at his theater. He says he doesn’t necessarily “like” the film, but “unlike the other side, I’m not a censor. I trust smart people…” I’m only scratching the surface here. But a lot of my FB friends didn’t really care to read about Moore’s support for our armed forces and our veterans. Instead, they launched personal attacks on Moore that had nothing to do with the post that I shared. He will be saddened to know that several of my friends think he is a “fat ass.” Others insist he is a “disgrace.” My friend Frank called him a “spineless piece of shit.” David asked the question that has vexed conservatives for generations: “Why do liberals hate our country?” I knew I would spark a vigorous response when I shared Moore’s comments… and I wasn’t disappointed…

of course they don’t. That kind of rhetoric is favored by that sector of the conservative populace that doesn’t burden itself with nuanced opinions. They believe all Muslims are evil… all guns are good… and all liberals hate our country. Moore and the other liberals who tried to keep us from going to war in Iraq… again… didn’t do that because they hated our country. They did it because they didn’t believe the case for war was valid… and their concerns were validated when the “evidence” of “weapons of mass destruction” in Iraq failed to turn up. Moore’s anti-war protests were an effort to save American lives. If he and his fellow protestors had been successful, we might never have heard of Chris Kyle or been exposed to the book and film versions of “American Sniper.” Imagine that… …I don’t often hear or read of liberals claiming that conservatives “hate our country.” It’s the rightwingers who claim exclusive ownership of “patriotism.” Generalizations are always wrong…

- Mark Bedford …Why do liberals hate our country? The answer to that is… well,

PLYMOUTH, Minn. (UPI) Authorities in Minnesota said they are looking into whether an elderly woman was already dead when her son brought her to the bank for an $850 withdrawal. Police said David Vanzo of Plymouth reported his mother, Caryl Vanzo, dead just days shy of her 91st birthday about two weeks ago and officers were greeted at the home by a stench of urine and feces. The woman’s body was clothed in a robe, fur coat and boots that were covered in excrement, police said. Vanzo, who was

arrested on a charge of elderly neglect, was found to have visited the bank with his mother just seven hours before reporting her death. He withdrew $850 from his mother’s account, police said. Investigators said they are looking into whether Caryl Vanzo was dead when her son took her to the bank. Witnesses at the bank said the woman’s feet were dragging under her wheelchair and Vanzo’s neighbors said they wondered whether the mother was dead or unconscious when she was being taken from her house to a taxi cab. David Vanzo had previously been investigated by social workers on allegations of financially exploiting his

mother. Police visited the home in 2012 and found Caryl Vanzo was lucid and wanted to stay in the home with her son. David Vanzo denied the allegations against him and said the money he withdrew was from a joint account. “I love my mother very much,” he told KMSP-TV. “I gave my life to keep my mother alive. Look at my eyes.” WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (UPI) Police in Florida said a teenager caught posing as a doctor at a hospital had been carrying out his ruse at the facility for about a month. Police were called to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach on Jan. 13 on a report of a juvenile

falsely identifying himself as a doctor while wearing a white lab coat and carrying a stethoscope. “The individual never had contact with any hospital patients and did not gain access to any patient care areas of the hospital at any time. The hospital immediately notified local authorities, who took the individual into custody, and we are cooperating with their ongoing investigation,” the hospital said in a statement. However, Dr. Sebastian Kent, an OB/GYN with St. Mary’s, said the teen was with him in an examination room while he

was with a patient. “The first thing I thought was, ‘I am really getting old because these young doctors look younger every year,” Kent told CNN. Kent alerted police, who said security guards reported seeing the teenager walking around the hospital while dressed as a doctor on multiple occasions in previous weeks. “I saw him outside our office building with policemen surrounding him. I believe they had him in handcuffs. There was quite a commotion,” Kent said. The teen told police he had been a doctor for “years,” but his mother said he suffers from an illness and has been refusing to take his medication. The hospital and police said they have decided not to pursue charges against the boy. DOMINICA - Sperm whales are one of the largest species of cetaceans, as such they have few natural enemies, other than man, but they do know how to protect themselves, and one unfortunate group of divers in the Caribbean found out just how effective this bizarre defense mechanism can be. The divers, part of a government approved expedition, were photographing the whale off the small Island of Dominica, when the giant mammal surprised them with a giant underwater poo cloud. Described as a ‘poonado’ by Canadian photographer, Keri Wilk, the peculiar behavior is thought to have been evidence of a rarely seen defense mechanism. The whale managed to create a whirlwind of excrement by spinning on its side and flapping its tail. “The water was crystal clear, initially, and was the most idyllic Caribbean blue water that you could imagine. Then after a few waves of feces

were released and stirred vigorously by the whale, the water was like chocolate milk, I couldn’t see my hand when I held it in front of my face.” To make matters worse, Mr. Wilk prefers to dive with just goggles and a snorkel as bubbles from scuba diving equipment tend disturb the whales. “I had poop in my eyes, mouth, wetsuit, everywhere and I was soaked in it from head to toe.” On the plus side, Wilk said that this very well could be the first time that such an incident has been photographically documented. SACRAMENTO (UPI) - Authorities in California said a man who wound up in the back of a garbage truck survived by building “a coffin around himself” from trash. Yolo County Sheriff’s Lt. Martin Torres said the man, whose name was not released, was searching through a Sacramento-area garbage bin for his wallet Dec. 13 when the bin was dumped into the garbage truck. “The man said he was stuck in the truck for about an hour, but estimates show it was more like three or three and a half hours,” Torres told the Woodland Daily Democrat. “The truck made several other pick-ups before arriving at the landfill, where the driver saw the man crawl out of his trash pile.” Torres told the Sacramento Bee the man used objects around him in the back of the truck to “build a coffin around himself” and keep from being crushed by the compactor. “He was lucky the truck was only half full,” Torres said. “Had it been full, he would have certainly been crushed and suffocated to death.” Torres said a bulldozer at the Yolo County Landfill nearly ran over the man after the truck

dumped its load, but the truck driver spotted the man and alerted the bulldozer driver in time. “The driver was pretty much a hero for that,” Torres said. Authorities said the man appeared to be uninjured, but complained of neck and back pain. He was taken to a hospital for an examination. “While our driver had no idea of anyone in his load, we’re very glad and proud of our driver for spotting the man while dumping out his truck at the landfill,” said Nick Sikich, chief operating officer of Sacramento-based Atlas Disposal. “If he hadn’t, the landfill equipment could have come along and buried him. We hope the man is OK and had a speedy recovery from any injuries.” PLYMOUTH, England (UPI) - Alex Nash, a 5-year-old from Cornwall, England, has been billed for skipping a classmate’s birthday party at the Ski Slope and Snowboard Centre in Plymouth last month. Alex’s father, Derek, told the Plymouth Herald on Monday that his son came home with a £15.95 ($24) invoice last week. It had been passed on to him by Julie Lawrence, the mother of the classmate whose birthday he missed. “I thought it was a joke to begin with. I am lost for words,” Derek said. Derek said Alex had agreed to go to the party but remembered too late that his son had made plans to spend the day with his grandparents. He said he didn’t have any way to contact the Lawrence family. Lawrence told BBC News that Alex and his family had her contact information. “All details were on the party invite. They had every detail needed to contact me.” Derek told Lawrence that he

refused to pay the bill because of the way Lawrence broached the issue. “I told her she should have spoken to me first and not put the invoice in my son’s school bag,” he said. “I would have sympathized with her about the cost of Alex not showing up, but I just can’t believe the way she has gone around it.” Derek said Lawrence threatened to take him to small claims court, though Derek’s partner is attempting to mediate the dispute. KENT COUNTY, GB - A human cannonball made a lethal impact during a stunt show at Kent County Showground in Great Britain. Video footage of the event showed Matthew Cranch, 24, moments before the stunt. After climbing into the giant cannon spectators shouted “Three, two, one, fire!” before Cranch was propelled 40 feet into the air with an explosion and a puff of smoke. Tragically, the human ‘cannonball’ earned his name the hard way when the safety net he was supposed to land in collapsed, causing Cranch to land on the ground. This particular stunt show has been touring the UK since 1991 and features motorbike and monster truck stunts as well as the human cannonball and have never had an equipment failure like this before. Police announced after an extensive investigation that no criminal prosecution would be brought over the incident. Cranch had only been with the daredevil stunt show for two weeks at the time of the incident and was taking part in his 12th event. It is unknown if the stunt company will be able to find another performer of his caliber.
