From the Publisher’s Notebook A friend of mine recently asked me why I write about so many negative things. The answer is there are so many negative things that surround us and affect our daily lives. Let me give you a perfect example. Recently we celebrated a national holiday on a Monday that had the banks and government offices closing. The post office was one of the government branches that closed. They were closed Saturday, Sunday, and the holiday (a Monday). I went to the main branch downtown on Tuesday to check my mailbox and mail some business packages. When I got there, there was a line.

4) Had they purchased the beer in the club, or had a friend bought them one? I could go on and on about this miscarriage of justice, but you get the idea. Thank goodness a few on the Beer Board did not vote for this suspension - just the ones with questionable sense. Don’t you think they should have questioned the drivers

and gotten the info firsthand? Why do most burger joints use frozen Hopefully good sense and the law will patties? Why not make your own like correct this joke of a ruling. Southside (South Chattanooga) is getting too, if not already, overbuilt. How - Paul E. Burke Sr. much trust fund money is still out there?

The reason there was a line was simple, the businesses downtown that had mail that needed to go out and people were taking care of their business. That makes perfect sense. What didn’t make perfect sense was that the post office only had one window open and a lone clerk. When I asked why he didn’t have any help, I was told some people had taken the day off and they didn’t have enough employees working that day. Stop and think - really – no wonder the post office loses money. They’re stupid. I recently read with disbelief that the Beer Board suspended one of the popular local nightspots beer license for two weeks. It seems that over a few weeks period several people stopped for DWI claimed to have been drinking beer at this spot. They weren’t stopped leaving, they were stopped in different parts of town. So, it was the establishment’s fault they were driving intoxicated. This is bothersome for several reasons: 1) The board didn’t hear from the accused drivers - secondhand info from the police. 2) How did the police know whether or not they had been drinking elsewhere besides this establishment? 3) Had the drivers drank any in their cars before going in the club? (A lot of people sit in their cars and drink before they enter a club) ENIGMA

More Reminisces From The Range As I’ve mentioned in articles before I am a Tennessee Handgun Permit Class Instructor. Most of these classes are routine. A few get a little hairy if someone is not being careful with their firearm. Some are rewarding. While teaching some classes I learn from the experience and in others I feel rewarded far beyond my pay. I sometimes feel that I am helping people overcome bad experiences. I frequently see the continuations of people’s lives through their children or grandchildren. Occasionally I see inanimate objects (handguns) that were used in incidents I had heard about or involving people I had heard stories about. Even though I have written about some range experiences before (see the May 2017 Enigma) I wanted to relate some

more of these “reminisces”. Recently I had a husband and wife, daughter and son-in-law and a few other family members attend one of my permit classes together. It

It was tough, American made and available in one color, a dark blue that looked almost black. It was to use the word again ‘elegant’. What stories could this fine weapon tell? Had it been a witness to or served faithfully in war? Perhaps it had saved its owner in peacetime or war. Alas we will never know.

weapon had survived unmolested for approximately one hundred years and to change the sights would affect the value. Plus it would be just wrong in most gun knowledgeable people’s opinion. We informed him that it would be best to leave the weapon as is and use another to carry for selfdefense and maintain this one as a treasured family heirloom. Happily he took our advice. I had a friend who had retired from the Chattanooga Police Department and then moved to Montana. I would go out and visit and he would regale me with stories from the old days at the ‘C.P.D.’. He had told me about an incident where a detective was working a stake out assignment looking for armed robbers. This Detective was carrying what at that time was an unauthorized weapon: a Browning “High-Power” 9 millimeter semiautomatic pistol. The ‘High-Power is just a name. 9 millimeter is not considered to be high powered in the hierarchy of firearm calibers. Calling it a high power was probably a marketing strategy. This Detective ended up shooting a suspect during a robbery attempt with this unauthorized weapon. At that time the C.P.D. carried revolvers only. It was not the size of the bullet that was the concern but that he had used a semiautomatic pistol. He was of course worried he would get in trouble but the powers that be overlooked the infraction. Recently I had a student in my class who it turned out was the son of this Detective and had brought the weapon to class to qualify with. I got to actually see and examine a weapon I had heard an account of its having been used in self-defense. History does sometimes come alive through inanimate objects, which are often firearms.

witnessed or been involved in happened again. One young woman related that she had hidden in a closet terrified as she listened to an intruder move through her apartment and prowl among her possessions. Eventually the burglar left but the memories and subsequent trauma still haunted her. She had vowed that in the future she would not feel powerless and terrified in such a situation. She wanted to learn to shoot and feel capable with a firearm in order to protect herself. She did well on her shooting qualification and I hope she never has to use her selfdefense firearms training. I know it gave her a sense of self-confidence. Another student revealed he was the victim of a road rage incident. He related that he had been riding his motorcycle when a woman became enraged and chased him then struck him with her car. He was severely injured. Now that he was partially recovered (after a long hospital stay and several surgeries), he was preparing to legally arm himself to have a weapon to defend himself in any future violent incident.

who have told me of their being shot. I think it serves as a type of catharsis for them to relate the event. None blamed the gun that was wielded against them. They blamed the person who had shot them. I more fully realized the grave consequences of my training when I had a student return to me and relate how he had been forced to use deadly force to protect himself in an attempted robbery situation. He was visibly upset as he related the details of the shooting and seemed to be second-guessing himself as to his use of deadly force. He was not a police officer or soldier who was trained to use deadly force. He had not received psychological preparation for this traumatic event. I tried to reassure him that there was nothing he could have done in the situation. I know he was gravely affected by the incident and I hope he will mentally recover from the emotional trauma he suffered.

One student, a former police officer, told me of his being shot in the arm and chest. Luckily the bullet to the chest had been stopped by his bulletproof vest. He told me that even though the vest had stopped the bullet he received blunt force trauma and still suffered residual pain from the injury. He was not there to get the firearms training, to feel empowered or to fight the helplessness some peoplefeel after being attacked by a criminal or crazed person. He simply needed a permit to legally carry a weapon as he had left law enforcement after the incident. He knew only too well that evil could reach out and touch someone no matter who they I have had several students who were. I still get to see fine firearms, steely blue and wood, being used by family members. Sometimes they have now been passed to the third or fourth generation of users. Such handguns as Colt Pythons, Woodsmans and Official Police which have not been made in years soldier on. There are the Smith & Wessons and other brands too. Most often used for recreation, valued as an heirloom but with the ability to be used for the ultimate purpose: self defense. Some days at the range are routine. Some get a little hairy. On some days you learn something or see a really cool old gun and maybe hear a really good story. If you have a good one come see me. I’d love to hear it.

Laprise crafted a Back to the Future-style Delorean on the side of his street as part of a prank and he got the results he expected. “It was a beautiful day,” Laprise told Vice. “So I decided to do something out of the mountain of snow, to do a little joke to the snow guys, and have fun sculpting a car. It’s not my first one, just the first I do in the street on snow removal day.” Laprise sculpted the Delorean to look like a life-size version of Marty McFly’s ride had been parked throughout a snow storm for days. He even added indentions for the wheels and windows — and then threw a spare windshield wiper he found lying around for a special touch. The snow car looked real enough that when police came around to look for cars parked on that side of the road during a snow plowing hours, they wrote a ticket and left it on a windshield made of snow. Larpise had his last laugh as he posted the photos to Facebook. “Muhahaha,” he wrote.

An Important Message from Paul Burke Sr. Hi, my name is Paul Burke, the publisher of this magazine. I usually don’t write anything about any of our advertisers. Today I’m making a one time exception. Recently I experienced a painful three weeks caused by a pinched nerve in my neck.

The funny thing was my neck wasn’t even sore.

To make this long story short—I felt better that first day.

What was sore was my right shoulder blade, right arm, elbow, and hand. On a scale of 1 to 10, this pain was an 11. It was that bad. It felt as if someone had stuck a very large knife under my right shoulder blade. The pain also radiated down my right arm. The muscle in my arm was so sore I couldn’t even touch it. My elbow was the same way.

I now have gone for five treatments over a two week period, and I feel great. I haven’t even had to take an aspirin in nine days. It’s wonderful. If you are tired of the pain and want relief, I suggest you give Doctor Wall a try.

Six Ways to Make Our Political System Fairer & Better Regardless of one’s political orientation, and/ or beliefs, nearly everyone realizes, there is considerable dysfunction, which makes the system, work ineffectively and inefficiently, and is often, less than properly directed, to serve the common good, and/ or needs! Perhaps, now, more than any time, in recent memory, this has become obvious and pronounced, because we have seen numerous incidents, where it appears, politicians tend to place politics, their personal agenda, and/ or self - interest, ahead of the needs, goals and priorities of their constituents, and the common good! WIth that in mind, this article will attempt to briefly examine, and discuss. 6 ways to, potentially, make our political system, and the politicians. fairer and better.

might hope, we elect representatives, who focused, primarily on the needs, goals, priorities, and best interests, of those they serve and represent, we often witness, quite the contrary behavior! Unfortunately, we often see, individuals, who appear, to care more about their interests, than the common good. For example, the United States, was supposed to have a budget, in place, by last October, but because of Congressional dysfunction, we have witnessed numerous temporary measures, only. Is that any way to run a government, or shouldn’t the politicians, be made accountable, for failing, to do, what they should? After all, we have just seen our government, officially, close down, because they didn’t so their jobs! What if, there was a ramification, for them, when they didn’t serve, as they should, such as, not 1. Wouldn’t it be better, if politicians, had to vote on specific matters, such as DACA, etc, without making it conditional, on other issues? How can we call it representative democracy, when polls indicate approximately 80% of the public support, the so - called Dreamers, yet, the politicians, still, can’t pass appropriate, responsive legislation?

2. Mandatory ethics: Shouldn’t there be, a strict, ethical code, that elected officials had to live up - to, including elimination of conflicts of interest, and other forms of personal behavior? Talking about it, or reacting, after the fact, doesn’t make them ethical, but genuine punishment and 5. Legislator’s Pension and Health ramifications, might! And Now For Something Completely Different Grace Holt and Natasha Ferrier are breaking down walls and traditional stereotypes as the two comics play host to the first “Once A Month” stand-up comedy showcase coming to their hometown of Chattanooga on February 24. Taking their cue from the 1985 Annie Lennox/Aretha Franklin’s “Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves” female empowerment anthem the two young comics have put together what they plan to be a monthly showcase of female standup comedy featuring touring comics including themselves. The event, taking place at The Palace Theater boasts not only all-female talent but also staff working the venue, as well as The Palace Theater’s owner, Rose Cox.

“It just shows that we’ve progressed and changed and we’re reaching equality especially in performance art,” says Ferrier. “Performers and art in itself is about your mind and your heart opened. It’s not about what you look like. And that’s the point of art – it’s self-expression. It showcases there’s more types of people than the white male. Again though, men are welcome.”

“There’s not a fear of them being the butt of the joke. They’re able to come out and know it’s going to be inclusive. My dad will also probably be there.” Stand-up comedy has its roots in

It brings a whole new community out – the LBGQT community and anyone that has felt oppressed in any way they’re finally able to come out and not be the butt of the joke,” she adds.

One of the first nationally famous female stand-up comics was Jean Carroll who made the rounds in the 1940s and 50s appearing on television. Both have their own distinctive style of humor. Holt, a tall blonde with long hair humor is self-deprecating narcissism. “Like I really think I’m gross and nasty but I dig it about myself,” she says. The comic also enjoys talking about family. “I have two truly amazing parents and I am an only child so I’m really bizarro. That’s really what I’m aiming for,” she adds. A lot will depend on the audience. Sometimes Holt will go off on a tangent and try new material. By comparison, Ferrier, a petite brunette with short hair characterizes her humor more autobiographical. “I talk about relationships and getting older… and alcohol,” she says. With material containing what she considers embarrassing stories, doing so to make herself vulnerable Ferrier’s material speaks to both men and women. “I don’t think any of my jokes are marketed to either,” she says. “I try to write things in general to appeal to more.”

Holt, who has been on the comedy circuit for a little over two years says while on the road performing she’s learned to develop a thick skin. “You really have to pick yourself back up a lot of times and get back to work which, in honesty is the most encouraging thing I’ve done for myself.” Holt adds it honestly is the one of the most encouraging things she’s done for herself with her confidence going through the roof when it happens. “I can go through a disaster developing a thick skin and not get hard.”

“It’s always work and people don’t realize you have to write everyday,” says Ferrier. “It’s like clocking in and out at work. You have to do that with your writing and treat it like a job – not just a performance.” And there is payoff hopefully for the hard work put in to perform stand-up comedy with every comic having a motivation to do what they do. “To have enough money to not drink PBR every night,” Ferrier jokes. When it comes to a tough crowd Holt says her toughest audience is her dad. “He supports everything I do but it’s something to hear your sweet precious daughter talking about why she needs to change her sheets and how many pizzas did you eat this week and who is this guy kind of deal,” she says. Nervous to perform in front of her dad, Holt says he always sees his face in the audience while on stage. “He doesn’t like my comedy,” she laughs. “But he loves me.” As the title states “Once A Month” will take place monthly at The

Palace Theater with Holt and Ferrier hosting and with a changing of comics each show. “I think the long term goal is to get better acquainted with these wonderful women we met these past couple of years to network with them and get more shows and get this ball rolling more – maybe more females collaborating with each other,” says Holt. “As far as the show this is the first one I’ve produced so for me I’m ready to see where this goes and go ahead and learn these lessons.”

Bad Food Matters Who among us hasn’t nibbled on Velveeta, grabbed a can of hash, scarfed down a baloney sandwich, or smuggled Spam into the pantry when no one was looking? A quick spin through the drive through, a nuked frozen entree, a bucket of fried chicken, or a sugary smoothie. Colored, candied breakfast cereals, fatty, salty luncheon meats, french fries, doughnuts, the assault is endless. And Americans keep coming back for more. After all, didn’t Elvis nosh on fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches? Fit for a king. Bad foods fill a purpose for convenience, affordability and just plain hopeless cooks. Want pancakes? Fire up the microwave. Want muffins or donuts? Some shops even have drive-through windows. Coffee? Hey, we all know where we’re headed for a tall mocha latte. Lunchtime.

No need to make dinner with all that snacking. But if you’re still hungry, just dial-up the local pizza place that delivers. You deserve a treat, and you’ve eaten nuked dinners all week, so how about some freshly made food arriving in 30 minutes guaranteed. Maybe some buffalo chicken wings for extra protein. Then Sunday, let’s do brunch with brown and serve sausages, frozen waffles and lots of syrup. Maybe some toast made with white bread and lots of jam. Yessiree, it’s a feast for the eyes.
