From the Publisher’s Notebook Why do people – both white and people of color keep playing the race card? The latest is the uproar over the Academy Awards nominees.

The plane was airborne and Gregg was in a panic. He didn’t know what hotel we were staying or any other info.

Dear Rocco, One of my friends who is not as good with money as he thinks recently spent $400 for a birthday cake for a girlfriend’s (girl friend in his words) baby’s first birthday party. He is not the father and she had gotten divorced a few months ago. That seems like a lot of money for a cake of any kind especially if it is known that he is in debt. Why do you think he did this and what do you think a cake this price must taste? LC

Pondering Bernie ing on how his 2016 run turns out, it might be quite a while before we have another one remotely like him. There are times when Sanders seems genuinely surprised to be doing as well as he is the Democratic primary polls. Bernie is trailing Hillary Clinton in most national polls by (approximately) a 50 percent to 37 percent margin, but other polls show Sanders ahead of the former secretary of state in Iowa and New Hampshire. (The Iowa caucuses are on February 1. New Hampshire’s primary is on February 9.) Some speculate that Bernie will pick up momentum if he wins those first two primaries, while others insist that Hillary’s strong support among black female voters will give her a big

edge in South Carolina and the other “SEC” primaries… …Sanders had a fantastic performance in Monday night’s “town hall” meeting at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The town hall format, which emphasized questions submitted by the college audience and others in attendance, was tailormade for Bernie. He emphasized that he likes and respects Ms. Clinton, but then pointed out the key differences between himself and his opponent. Sanders said that Clinton’s senatorial support of the war in Iraq, which he opposed, was a key differentiator. He also emphasized Clinton’s relationship with and support from Wall Street bankers. …In an odd way, Bernie Sanders reminds me of former president Jimmy Carter. There are those who insist that Sanders’ innovative policies wouldn’t work in “the real world.” Similarly, Carter was judged to be ineffective during his one term in the White House. But I think both men are incredibly honest… …Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor in President Bill Clinton’s administration, recently endorsed Sanders via a blog post. Reich, who was ranked as one of the top 10 cabinet members of the 20th century by Time magazine, sees some major differences between Bernie and Hillary. “I’ve known Hillary Clinton since she was 19 years old,” Reich wrote, “and have nothing but respect for her. I do know that his candidacy has elevated the level of debate in his party. He asks questions that need to be asked and will never be anyone else’s tool. There’s something incredibly refreshing about that…

The five-foot black tip shark was found in the Mariner’s Cay condominium pool in Lake Worth and removed by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers. The woman also reported seeing two men running from the scene at the time of her discovery (two assholes, rather, who either don’t know or don’t care that sharks don’t like chlorine) and an FWC officer contacted management after noticing surveillance camera’s in the area. “This incident is the focus of an ongoing investigation,” FWC spokesperson Rob Klepper said. So what do you do if you want to bring 200 pounds of illegal Xanax into the United States from Canada in the middle of winter? A Canadian man garbed himself in winter camouflage and tried to sneak into Vermont while pulling a sled loaded with nearly 200 pounds of Xanax. The U.S. District Court in Burlington released documents revealing Cedrick Bourgault-Morin, 21, of Quebec, was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents after he tripped a sensor along railroad tracks leading into North Troy, Vt. Border agent John McGarghan wrote in the arrest report that agents “observed a single adult male, dressed in white camouflage clothing, walking along the railroad tracks and pulling a sled behind him. The sled contained one large duffel bag wrapped in white camouflage.” The bag contained 182 pounds of alprazolam, an anti-anxiety medication commonly known by the brand name Xanax. The pills were separated into 300 vacuum-sealed bags. Customs officials estimated the street value of the drugs at $1.6 million. The man was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. He faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

According to police, the woman, identified as Jennifer Nicholson, stripped off her clothes, punched a woman in the face and then threw a plate at a window. She also threw several platters at patrons of the restaurant. When police tried to subdue Nicholson, she fought back. The woman who was punched sustained a broken nose in the attack, according to police. Nicholson is facing several assault and public indecency charges. Indiana police said a man paying for his McDonald’s food handed a bag of heroin to a drive-through worker along with his money. The police report of the incident said an employee at the McDonald’s in LaPorte took money from a male driver who appeared intoxicated and she sorted the bills to discover a green plastic baggie containing a “rock-like substance.” Police said the substance “appeared to be heroin” and later testing confirmed the presence of the drug. Police said the man likely handed over the heroin by accident. “It shows you how significant the problem is here that we’re battling,” Metro Operations Coordinator Harlan Williams said.

ORLANDO, FL - When is better at a barbecue; pork chops or breasts? How about both? Especially when the chops are flame grilled and the breasts are bare...and belong to a woman...who is drunk and violent. The breasts belong to 31-year-old Christine Taylor who had been drinking at her trailer park in Florida. The fun started when a deputy went to the trailer park to investigate a report of a disturbance. It seems that Ms. Taylor had been “trying to fight people in the trailer park,” according to one victim who called in the complaint. Earlier, Taylor was accused of toppling a barbecue grill and tossing pork chops all over the lawn. She is then quoted as yelling, “What’s up bro!” Before threatening to cut the victim with a beer bottle. It was at this point that Taylor lifted her shirt, revealing her breasts to the victim and his three children. Perhaps because her breasts are more intimidating than a broken beer bottle. There are no images of the perpetrator’s breasts, so it is hard to tell. Taylor was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge, and What is it with naked women this most of the pork chops were salweek? Thinking About “The Question” Idea of a Christian College, implies that to ask “What will this degree do for me?” is to ask the wrong question. Rather, a prospective student should ask “What will this degree do ttoo me?” To frame the question this way means that the prospective student understands the difference between transformational education and education that merely produces vocational skills. Transformational education provides a broad yet integrated view of the world that changes a person to the extent that her influence on her family, employer, church, and community is pervasive and far reaching. Degree programs that focus primarily on the equation that more skills equal a better paying job are short-sighted in that they fail to realize that skills have a short shelf life and Arthur F. Holmes, in his book The fade quickly into obsolescence. As someone who has been involved with adult education for 13 years, I’ve been faced with this question many times, “What will this degree do for me?” The person who asks this question wants to know what skills he will acquire that will lead to a better paying and perhaps even more fulfilling job. This is an honest question, and if you’re a prospective student, Belhaven’s admission representatives are eager to provide the information you’re looking for. However, let me challenge you a bit. What if the answer to your question could be enhanced by asking a different question – a question that’s driven more by a transformational view of education than a purely vocational view? Here’s what I mean.

ENIGMA

Consistent with Holmes’ view that the liberal arts are the best type of career preparation, Belhaven University’s adult and graduate studies programs provide an expanded offering of general education courses combined with professional curricula that transform students to think broadly and critically in an ever changing and complex world. At Belhaven, occupational know-how (as Holmes put it) is undergirded by courses that develop cognitive and communication skills, imagination, and values – all of which, according to Holmes, are the products of a strong liberal arts (and thus transformational) education.

desire to return to college, any admissions team worth its salt will work to answer all of your questions. I know we will. There aarree measurable benefits for those who earn a college degree – no doubt! But you will sell yourself short if, as you explore your options, you fail to consider which college or university’s programs are best designed to transform its students. Only as students are personally transformed by their education will the value of their degree outlast any short-term gains produced by a new skill set.

MONEY MANAGEMENT

CONCEPTS TO CONSIDER WHEN YOU CAN'T PAY YOUR TAXES Not paying your taxes on time entails various consequences. If you are having trouble paying your taxes in full, don't let it hinder you in filing your tax return timely. Consider paying as large a percentage of the amount owed or borrow money from others in order to settle your tax liability in full. Filing a return and not including full payment can save you large amounts of penalties and fees. Moreover, payment plans are available and being on a current payment plans avoids IRS collection process which may include, property seizures, garnishments etc. Most CPA firms can advise you on these matters. These are the ordinary penalties: · "Filing Failure" penalty 5% per month on the amount of tax due on the return to a maximum of 25% · "Payment Failure" penalty .5% per month on the amount of your tax due on the return to a maximum of 25% · Both "Filing Failure" penalty and

is under $50,000.

The "Filing Failure" penalty lowers to 4.5% per month and "Payment Failure" penalty is .5% per month. The combined penalty stays at 5%. The maximum penalty for both is 25%. Then, the "Payment Failure" penalty continues at.5% per month another 45 more months. Both penalties can go to a maximum of 47.5%. Besides the penalties above, interest is charged on late payments. Also when you are self-employed, you take full responsibility for paying the taxes as money is earned through the year. Payment extensions are provided when it can be proven that unwarranted hardship exists. Inconvenience caused by paying the tax isn't enough grounds for unwarranted hardship. The taxpayer must show that paying the tax would cause significant difficulty and/or expense. For example, a fire sale, selling property at an extremely discounted price, since the person faces the difficulty of paying taxes.

When a payment extension is granted, interest is still charged but the "Payment Failure" penalty is waived. The payment extension is usually good for six months from the due date of the return. The IRS will lengthen time allowed for a payment extension due to some circumstances..

McGruff and the Sequatchie County Psycho A Cautionary Road Rage Tale Hopefully the title grabbed your attention and if you read on you will realize why I titled the article that. Apparently Christmas tis the season for road rage. Both myself and a friend of mine now also retired from law enforcement were both “victims” of road rage incidents in the same weekend shortly before Christmas. Why more people are “losing it” while driving? I don’t have the answer. Here’s my story. On a Saturday in December I was driving to Lillie Mae’s restaurant which is in Red Bank. They have a good breakfast special that is very reasonably priced. As I started down an entrance ramp onto Hwy. 27 I checked my rear-view mirror and saw a car move from the slow lane into the fast lane

presumably to let me over from the on-ramp. Suddenly a gray car whipped from the fast lane into the slow lane as if the driver was angry that the car had come over into his lane. Luckily I was watching my rear-view when this person veered into the lane. This put the vehicle “on my radar”. I proceeded south on the road and caught up to slower moving traffic. As I passed a vehicle I glanced in my rear-view to see the gray car now behind me. The gray car got closer and closer to the rear of my vehicle. The car was now definitely in “tailgating territory” I sped up to put some distance between us but the car stayed approximately a car length behind me. As it was Saturday there was a fair amount of traffic on the highway. As I

ENIGMA

passed one car the tailgater whipped over into the slow lane and tried to get around me. The slower traffic in that lane prevented this so the car again got right behind me. This occurred several times with the car whipping from lane to lane and aggressively following me. Finally as we approached the exits for Hwy. 153 I slowed down to let this obviously road rage possessed driver get around me in the slow lane. However the driver, an enraged white male, also slowed down and was leaning out the window shaking his fist, flipping me the bird and yelling something, presumably obscenities. The enraged psycho-driver beckoned to me to pull over and exited as if to go onto northbound Old Dayton Pike. I thought I’d seen the last of Mr. Road Rage but it was not to be. I exited onto Hwy. 153 going south and saw to my surprise that the gray car had doubled back and was now sitting on the side of the road ahead of me. As I approached Mr. Road Rage (hereafter referred to as Mr. RR) he got out of his vehicle and jumped in the roadway in front of me. I had to swerve into the fast lane to avoid this crazy. As I looked in my rear-view mirror I saw Mr. RR jump into his car and start after me. I had to stop for the red light at Boy Scout Road and Hwy.153. I watched as the gray car bulled past other cars sometimes on the shoulder to get behind me. As the light turned green the car accelerated past me and started weaving back and forth as if to prevent me from passing. I had decided to go to the County annex on Dayton Boulevard as I thought there would be officers there so we were heading south on Dayton Boulevard. Mr. RR slammed on his brakes and I as I swerved to go around him he swerved his car at mine. I had to violently cut the

FEBRUARY 2016

wheels to the left to avoid a collision. I knew now this guy was really crazy. I proceeded northbound and turned into the county annex parking lot. I had turned into the main entrance. Mr. RR had turned into another entrance and roared across the parking lot pulling in front of me. Mr. RR then jumped out of his car and ran over to mine. As I did not want to be trapped in the car I exited my vehicle. Whether this was the best course of action is debatable. Mr. RR then got right up in my personal space yelling about me slamming on my brakes (which didn’t happen) and threatening to kick my ass, telling me he had a temper and generally going crazy. I told him he needed to back up and calm down. I then noticed a white female and a small child exit the gray car and start walking towards the annex. This crazy had another person presumably his wife or girlfriend in the car and a small child while he was driving this dangerously! This distracted me from the psychos’ tirade and I decided I needed to call the police. I called 911 and tried to get an officer to respond to this disorder as I felt sure it was likely to get physical due to the psycho’s actions. As I tried to talk to the clerk I had to back away from the psycho. I got off the phone as I felt I needed to pay attention to Mr. RR. At one point the crazy tried to grab my phone. He applied pressure to my hand as if to make me drop the phone or crush it. He tried to get the phone but I wrestled it away. This could be considered attempted strongarmed robbery. As I moved to the rear of my car I recontacted 911 and gave them the crazy’s license tag number. This upset Mr. RR and he shoved me saying “you ain’t getting’ my tag number”. I told him that was assault (shoving me) and he quickly said “I never

touched you”. I tried to keep contact with the dispatcher but they seemed confused and advised me a police car was not en route even though I kept requesting one. Mr. RR pulled out his phone and said something to the effect of “I’ll take care of this”. The clerk I was talking to advised me a county car was now coming to my location. Apparently a county deputy had volunteered to take the call. The city and county don’t share radio channels so how this deputy knew about the call is open to conjecture. County deputies rarely answer disorder calls in the city. I started to become suspicious. Very soon a county car pulled up and my car was still in place blocked by Mr. RR’s car. Mr. RR appeared relieved. I became more suspicious. The deputy had pulled closest to me. I approached him and got out my retired police identification. I was gruffly told by the deputy that “I don’t need to see that, I need to see your license”. I told the deputy “This guy says he knows you. Is that right? He never replied. I felt sure then that Mr. RR had called McGruff. I gave the deputy my license and then the deputy; let’s call him McGruff as he never iden-

tified himself, asked what happened. I told him my account of the incident but was interrupted by RR as he crowed “you got a fast car but you didn’t know I had a temper” I looked at McGruff but he just ignored the angry interruption thus I did not get to the attempted strong arm robbery part before he went over to Mr .RR and talked to him. McGruff sat in his car briefly then called us over and pointed to places for us to stand. McGruff said something about “we’ re all Police”. I asked quickly “where’s he a police?” McGruff replied “Sequatchie County.” I had never seen RR produce any police identification so my suspicions deepened. McGruff told us to get in our cars and leave. I asked “so he just gets away?” and never got to finish my sentence as McGruff roared “you need to get in your car and leave”. McGruff never identified himself or gave me a report number. I requested a report from the county but never got a response. Apparently a report was not done. I started to let this go but the more I thought about it I was shocked this crazy would do what he did and with a woman and ENIGMA

small child in the car. I thought if RR is a police officer he either needs severe anger management counseling or firing. The car RR was driving had firefighter tags. I believe he is probably a volunteer firefighter. I cannot believe he is a police officer with that temper. If he actually is I am very sure it will not be long before he uses excessive force. I did make a report with the city but it did not have the tag number I gave the officer nor who the vehicle was registered to. It mentioned a mini-van and I have no idea where that came from. I had asked the officer taking the report to speak to the county officer but there is no mention of him doing that. What’s my point of telling this story? I considered myself a professional law enforcement officer and acted accordingly. If Mr. RR is law enforcement it is very sad. It is also probably dangerous for the public. I cannot explain McGruff’s actions but I have my theory. If a retired officer gets treated this way how would the average citizen be treated? I was armed at the time but never revealed my

FEBRUARY 2016

21

weapon. The average citizen might well have responded differently to Mr. RR’s actions. I didn’t push the issue very much as I am a retired officer. I was disappointed at McGruff’s actions. Doesn’t he realize police officers need to uphold the law? If he would of at least had RR apologize I would have had a better feeling. I was also disappointed with the quality of the report done by the other agency. I am a vocal advocate of Law Enforcement. This incident has obviously left an impression on me as to some current law enforcement. Law Enforcement officers do what’s right or effectively negotiate the situation. Do a good job of note taking and complete a good detailed report. I do have a suggestion for anyone caught in this type of incident: record it on your phone if possible. Meanwhile be careful driving as road rage incidents seem to be increasing. Let’s hope the law enforcement officer who responds handles the situation in a professional manner.

Ashes to Ashes As I grow older there are many things I regret. I don’t feel (most of the time) my age or act it (never). To be honest I’ve never really related to people my age and refuse to grow up. However with the recent passing of David Bowie I am glad for who I am and the era I grew up and even today continue to grow up.

Absolute Beginners finishing with the jazz influenced swan song of Blackstar that I listened to before I began writing this.

lection of his music of course was “Space Oddity”. Growing up in the time I did the “space race” was a big deal. I remem-

I am extremely lucky. I literally got to grow up with David Bowie. Well, not literally as I never met him, but you know the idea. I’ve lived and listened to all incarnations of the megamedia star from the more acoustic and folk sounding first works like “Space Oddity”, the glam rock era of “Ziggy Stardust”, the “Thin White Duke”, the new wave era, the hard rock sound of Tin Machine, reconciliation of his past and the soundtracks and As I said I literally grew up lis- ber in elementary school our movies he took part in like tening to Bowie. My first recol- homeroom teacher wheeling in a 19” black and white TV allowing us to watch the Apollo takeoffs. It was an annual event for many years unlike today as space exploration is looked upon with distain. The radio stations always played “Space Oddity” the weeks come up to the blast-off and return to earth. That’s what I most remembered about the song in my youth. I didn’t understand the lyrics, heck my age was still in single digits but I loved listening to the song when it came on and still do. While most kids my age were listening to nursery rhymes I was listening to the Beatles, Monkees, Doors, Elton John and Bowie. This was thanks in part to a cool dad ENIGMA

FEBRUARY 2016

24

who listened to this stuff and a sister almost ten years older who helped shape my early listening habits. For a while I was a little scared off of Bowie. That was during the Ziggy Stardust era. Not because of the music as the songs during that era are some of my favorite of all time but because of his androgynous look. The red tinted hair and the weird outfits I literally could not tell if he was a boy or girl – which was of course what he was going for. But to a kid – and remember, my age at the time was still in single digits, I did not understand. To be honest it quite frankly kind of spooked me. He sang like a man but looked like a girl. What the heck was going on? You may laugh at that me for that but take into account my age and the fact I was growing up in an upper middle class neighborhood at a time when a divorce has still looked down upon and not a merit badge. To be honest I was still a little too young to know or understand sexuality – or sex in general. And at times I still don’t today. But I was still ahead of the curve as kids my age were still singing “This Land is Your Land” and their nursery rhymes as I was listening to the Doobie Brothers, David Essex and others. Despite my uncomfortable feeling I got looking at Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust, a majority of the songs in my Bowie collection are from this era. Then came that song. “Fame”. “Fame” was

Bowie’s first number one song. It is without a doubt my least favorite of his well-known songs. There are many reasons. I didn’t like the chorus of “Fame, fame, fame, fame” and so on. It seemed redundant. I also didn’t like that John Lennon sang backing vocals on the track. To tell the truth Lennon is probably my least favorite Beatle. His post-Beatle career never really took off like the others until his death in 1980. At the time I too started my brief Lennon love affair like everyone else. I purchased all the Beatles albums again – many on 8-track and mostly vinyl and even some of his solo work that I wasn’t fond of before. I loved him with the Beatles but not post-Beatles and mainly for the reasons a lot of others didn’t. Yoko. Beatles Lennon was a rock/pop star who was cool and post Beatle Lennon to me looked like a homeless bum with all his protests, sleep-ins, and so on even if they were for righteous reasons. Then again I was too young to really understand politics of the era. I did buy Double Fantasy his last album and at that time sing along with all the songs word for word. The album was melancholy to me in the fact he was no longer around to see the fruits his of labor and love. This is much like my feelings towards Blackstar that was released two days before Bowie’s death. Listening to Bowie’s last official release I wonder if I am reading more into the lyrics than was meant.

alog to me it is not as timeless as his earlier work or songs to come. As the rest of the Seventies rolled along disco took over for a number of years. Bowie stood on the outside changing genres and style at will with public approval. While some contemporaries were bit by the disco bug with even the Rolling Stones releasing a disco influenced single or two Bowie continued to do his own thing. The hits were spare during this time although now they are considered classics like “Heroes”. Queen who had been moderately popular throughout the mid to late ‘70s really blew up in 1979 and 1980 with songs like “Pretty Little Thing Called Love”, “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions” and Bowie teamed with them for “Under Pressure” that put him back on the charts. His musical style shifted again toward new wave with “Ashes to Ashes” and then maybe his signature album that truly reinvented himself to old fans along with reaching out to new as he released Let’s Dance.

Let’s Dance caught my attention and I bought it immediately. Any trepidation I had towards Bowie were gone. I was a young adult now and could look back at his old work with greater appreciation and understand more what exactly he was doing. I was a bona fide fan now. Let’s Dance embraced the music I was listening to at the time and still do – New “Fame” is also one of the few Wave and the New Romantic songs Bowie recorded that movement. dates itself. doing. While I always listened to his songs on the radio up to that point for some reason I was now immersed with Bowie. I was not a fanatic but if he had a new project or was in the news I would pay attention. And especially if he appeared in film. Truth be told Bowie was a good looking man with perfect hair and the physique of a male model his whole life even to his dying day. Let’s Dance came out at the perfect time as well seeing MTV was in its heyday with music videos.

multi-media star since his debut but now through the art of the music video he was readily broadcast into our homes on a daily basis. And he quickly ruled the video world. People who only saw pictures of Bowie or were too young to remember “The Midnight Special” not only got to see him sing, but move and act all on their television. His good looks along with excellently tailored music videos cemented him to a new audience and reaffirmed his old

presence and style has had on popular culture. A few examples are Martin Fry of ABC who looks like a younger version of Bowie. Even some of ABC’s later albums after Lexicon of Love shifted away from New Romantic with Alphabet City being more R&B influenced and Skyscraping being more of a stripped down rock album, the latter getting virtually no air play despite some really great songs. Joy Division’s Ian Curtis’ vocal style was very reminiscent of Bowie as are Editors and Interpol.

Tin Machine was a hard rock band and Bowie’s first foray into being a member of a band since the Ziggy Stardust era. The concept barely lasted two albums before he was off again to reinvent himself. He released seven albums after Tin Machine all receiving critical acclaim but little radio play. After a ten year hiatus from new recordings he released Next Day to critical acclaim in 2013. The Thin White Duke had not lost a step. Word came out at the end of last year that Bowie was putting out a new album in 2016. Blackstar was released two days before his death. Listening to it now is kind of spooky. The album has that experimental jazz influence and listening to the lyrics it is obvious that this is his swan song. The lyrics basically tell of his impending death (or the way I interpret them) and how he’s come to grips with it. It’s downright spooky, if not mesmerizing. Bowie reinvented himself one last time - this time as a man who is at peace with his fate and impending death.

I never thought Bowie would die. I always thought he was too cool to die. At least I figured he would outlive me. But even the great Starman proved to be mortal himself. I can’t suggest a Bowie album for you to listen to that defines him because they all do. And that was part of David Bowie’s charm. The world is minus one great innovator and artist with his passing. I guess Major Tom is truly coming home.

Blackstar was released on Bowie’s 69th birthday on January 8. Two days later he died. Only Bowie could figure out a cool way to die. Blackstar is his swan song and he literally went out on top. The album shot to the top of most music charts and is Bowie’s first number one album of his storied 45plus year career.

Rocking Out with Grace Remember when you were a kid and your best friend or sibling would come into your room with that new album you wanted to hear and would put it on the stereo? You would start listening and when that song came on you went crazy jumping around whipping your head around in a frenzy, even playing air guitar to the song dancing around and eventually falling down on the bed laughing in pure

joy as you jammed out. Good times. Sure, I may have dated myself with reference but you get the idea. That was Grace Potter on stage as she performed to a sold out crowd recently. With her Hammond B-3 center stage as a prop for a good period of the show she ran, danced and flailed away with her golden tresses flowing in the breeze often covering her face. She was having a great time. And so was everyone else. And then she picked up a guitar and looked even more like a rock goddess as she strutted around the stage at breakneck speed whipping her hair around, jamming with her lead guitarist whipping the crowd into a frenzy. Strutting around the stage she was reminiscent of Nancy Wilson of Heart. Before you feminists start raising hell let me say a few things. No, I didn’t compare her to Nancy Wilson because she is ENIGMA

a female guitar player for two reasons. One, you obviously don’t know anything about Heart the first real rock band of the rock and roll era with a female guitarist long before Joan Jett and the countless that followed her, and two, you obviously never saw Nancy Wilson perform on stage. Potter like Wilson owned the guitar and have that keen ability to get all sorts of energy going, whipping the crowd into a frenzy, often a sexual frenzy with her ability with the so-called axe and the way she played it. As the show started the crowd was still filtering in. By the second song the house was packed and there was such a buzz in the air as many had arms raised in the air, some whipping their hair around like Potter as everyone was energized – even stage security. While crowned “Queen of the Jam Bands” for her early penchant of playing festival heavily laden with

such artists, Grace Potter may be the farthest thing from a jam band. She is pure rock and roll. Very few people own the stage the Potter does and no one can probably keep up. Touring to promote her first solo album – the first devoid of her band the Nocturnals Potter performed mainly songs from that album, Midnight. With joy and jubilation, almost like a revival as she literally owned the stage Potter owns a voice perfect for rock and roll. Her vocals in the past have been compared to Joplin and Raitt and while you can hear a bit into it, her voice only has a subtle growl like who she is compared to it is just enough and not too much so as she doesn’t sound like she’s paying homage. If anything Grace Potter is an original, definitely unique and obviously goes to the beat of her own drum.
