The Hypocrite Oath This is the original version of the Whatsoever house I may enter, my Hippocratic Oath: visit shall be for the convenience and advantage of the patient; and I I swear by Apollo the physician will willingly refrain from doing that I will observe and keep this any injury or wrong from falseunderwritten oath, to the utmost of my power and judgment. Up until the first of December my mother was up and about – better than me to be honest. In spite of her flaws (we all have flaws) she was always there for me. 15 years ago when I was receiving major surgery the doctor told her I wouldn’t live to see 40. I’ve seen 40 and now I’ve seen 50 and ironically all of those doctors are dead except two. She never gave up on me and I’m not on her. Despite her pains and lack of mobility now I have \pretty much put everything on hold until she either passes or a miracle (and I’ve been praying for one) takes place.

After complaining about her sinus’ which my mom always does in the late fall instead of taking her to her “doc in the box” she wanted to go to Erlanger North to get her shot to feel better and to “knock it out of her system”. I did. A day later she complained about a pain in her hip where she received the shot. Two weeks later the pain seemed to get worse and she asked me to take her to the emergency room at Erlanger downtown.
When we met with a doctor and nurse and told them what was going on they huddled with a concerned look on their faces. They thought the needle may have nicked a nerve when she got the shot and they were worried about a malpractice suit. They made her an appointment for a general practitioner for her to follow up with. Nothing this doctor did or said helped my mother and my mother after two visits wanted to change doctors. The doctor before my mother quit seeing her arranged for her to have physical therapy for her hip. Two weeks into physical therapy she was showing improvement but she wasn’t able to shake her sinus issues still. This time she wanted to go back to her “doc in the box”. She said they took better care of her than the hospital or doctor they assigned her to. While examining her they decided to take a chest x-ray. Something was there but they didn’t know for sure. They scheduled her an appointment with oncologist Larry Schlabach. After his examination my mother told me she he was going to start her on chemotherapy. She said the doctor told her she has a small lesion on each lung, one on her liver and it looked as if it had spread to her hip where her pain was. My mom whispered to me, “It’s Stage 4”. Then on the ride home she said Dr. Schlabach told
her he could “knock it out” in three to six months. He also gave her a prescription for morphine to help her with the pain. That’s when things started to go south. Her once normal appetite started to lessen. He told her to drink Carnation Instant Breakfast and some ice cream.
Before I go on, I will tell you. The only insurance my mother has/had is Medicare. There is no money in it for health providers to do their best when they don’t have private insurance or a wealthy party to harvest money from. Basically because my mom doesn’t have toptier insurance they immediately gave up hope – or care about her She went into the hospital to have well being outside of making her a port for chemo put in her and “comfortable” so they can get her gave her her first treatment. She got an alarmed look on her face. Almost as if she had been After her examination Dr. busted. Schlabach said she was “pretty sick” and he might just throw her into hospice. I immediately was angered. How did three to six months become hospice?
“No, no, it’s not like that,” she said. “Really?” I retorted. Everyone I’ve seen go to hospice has died shortly thereafter. Her weak excuse was it was a bad rap that hospice has gotten and that people have live up to six months to a year at hospice. Gee that makes me feel good for someone a month earlier was told that her cancer could be knocked out in three to six months. The next day we were told that Dr. Sclabach had ordered eight rounds of radiation on her hip to help control the pain but was not going to do anything about the lesions on her lungs or liver. Two days later they literally shipped her out of Erlanger and put her in Life Care Center of Red Bank. She was still somewhat mobile but in the time there she was steadily declining. They put her on a restrictive diet – originally a liquid for what reason I still don’t understand. Eventually they put her on a soft food diet. I think mom was put off at the way they seemed to talk to her – like a big child. She didn’t want to eat her food and she called me constantly. About two weeks later I was called into the business office. Her Medicare paid for about five

more days for her to be at the facility. After that it was going to cost $156 a day to be there. They wanted to apply for Medicaid for her and thought she would be easily approved. If she went through with that they would take her entire Social Security check minus $50. Mom wanted to go home. So they had us pick a home hospice agency to help keep an eye on her. Mom looked in my eyes and said, “Don’t let me die here.” Being the good son and better of her two children I of course agreed. Even late last night after a rough day with the hospice nurse and counselor (the latter was actually a really cool person) she told me, “I’m getting stronger”. She moaned a little from the pain and was yelling at me while I helped her use the restroom and changed her diaper (I guess it really does come around full circle) she soon got comfortable and slept soundly all night until everyone showed up to see her today. She even told them she was feeling better. The day before I gave her caseworker permission to talk to my sister. They told her the cancer has spread through her bones and if we wanted to resuscitate her if she went into cardiac arrest. For the record my mother currently has better blood pressure readings than you or I – and probably her “doctor” (note quotation marks again). Her blood pressure was 117/65 with a pulse of 72. Most of us need medication to have it so
good. And like I said at the beginning of this she had never been sick a day in her life and never needed any medication like people her age are usually on. Even her “doc in the box” told her how impressed he was that she didn’t need any kind of prescription medicine. Except now she is being left for dead and as I type this I’m watching her gradually slip away. She’s snoring right now and had been more active than the two previous days, but I am fighting an uphill battle I will not be allowed to win. All in the name of the bottom-line.
less expensive to cremate mom. “I’m just worried about your well being” she said. Sure. You just can’t wait to have her out of your hair completely. Our family is a dysfunctional family not unlike all others except none of us really talk. Even living with my mother for years (I was guilted into that by her) we never really talked. Even when we would go out to eat. We would sit across from each other and say little more than ten words between us during the meal. I couldn’t wait to get it over and she was happy to eat out and be with the one child who didn’t “abandon” her. Now I realize we will never have another meal together no matter how long she remains alive. It’s kind of disturbing. And all because she didn’t have good insurance. If Medicare is government healthcare at it’s best I fear for those of you that have enrolled in Obamacare. Your ticket may be up before it needs to be – all in the name of the financial bottom line and to clear the roles of those that are taking up too much money and have no alternative source to pay.
Dr. Schlabach sent a notice in the mail that they needed to reschedule her appointment at the end of this month to March 9. I’m guessing they are either predicting or hoping she will be dead by then so they can turn their attention to someone either younger of with better insurance. To them my mother is a waste of time and there is no money in it to really help her. They will refute that until they are blue in the face and have others to back them on their decision, but it is too obvious and someone will have to pay since they decided to discard my mother So in the matter of a little over a like yesterday’s news. month my mother has gone from being able to take care of herself My sister, who I’ve talked to more and even cooking meals for the in the last three days than the last both of us and taking care of the 20 years or so combined pretty house to me changing her diapers, much only wanted to know if I someone coming every other day wanted to have mom cremated or to bath her and me filling her full buried. pain and out of this life. Someone along the way did not read or heed the Hippocratic Oath. My mom was curable. I will believe that until my last breath. But her doctor, Larry Schlabach didn’t seem to want to aid her. All in the name of the bottom-line. I’m guessing Dr. Schlabach took the Hippocratic Oath that requires a new physician to swear on a number of healing gods to uphold specific ethical standards. Of historic and traditional value, the oath is considered a rite of passage for practitioners of medicine in many countries. But in my opinion he and his office have not lived up to that oath. Instead they lived up to the Financial Oath which is as good of healthcare that you can afford or be billed for. It is not a Hippocratic Oath that doctors, especially in my experiences in Chattanooga, TN have been but actually a hypocrite’s oath. The only thing these caregivers care about is how much money they can get out of you and/or your insurance. Larry Schlabach I hope you know my mother’s blood is on your hands. And soon yours will be on mine. That’s not a threat; that’s a promise. Well, I need to stop right here. My mother is starting to moan in agony again. Time to give her more morphine.

Entertainment Gumbo Over the years, I’ve offered up samplings of “political gumbo” and “sports gumbo” fairly frequently. In that spirit, I’m whipping up my first-ever batch of “entertainment gumbo.” As you might suspect, it’s a mixed soup of assorted e-servations… …I’m reluctant to even mention Kanye West. Lord knows he doesn’t need any additional publicity. But West’s ongoing scene-stealing and sour grapes at awards shows is totally out of control. Taylor Swift was a doe-eyed 17-year-old when West grabbed the microphone out of her hand right after she was presented the Best Female
Video award at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Swift stood there shocked and upset as West proclaimed that Beyonce should have won the award. Then, a couple of weeks ago, West faked toward the stage at the Grammys as Beck was honored for Album of the Year. He didn’t take the mic this time… or Beck’s Grammy… but he later commented that Beyonce should have won that award, too. There are two things at work here. First, Kanye needs to be treated like any other punk if he rushes the stage when someone else is being honored. (Notice he never does it when someone
who might kick his ass is up there.) Second, West seems to have an unnatural admiration for Bey. Even among his other delusions, that one stands out…

TAMPA, Fla. (UPI) - Authorities in Florida said a couple who took a nap in a dumpster after a drunken night at a casino nearly met their end in the back of a garbage truck. Hillsborough County garbage truck driver Radames Valazquez called 911 early Wednesday morning to report a man and a woman were trapped in the back of his truck. Valazquez said he was about to compact his truck’s load when he heard the couple shouting for
help. “I got two people, I don’t know how they got in the back of the truck, but they stuck in the truck. I almost killed both of them,” he told the 911 dispatcher. Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies said they determined Donald Jordan, 37, and Lisa Sirabella, 49, had fallen asleep in a WaWa gas station dumpster after a drunken night at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino. Jordan, who authorities said appeared highly intoxicated, told deputies he and Sirabella were visiting Tampa from Kissimmee and sought warmth in

CINCINNATI (UPI) - An Ohio teacher with a phobia of young children lost an appeal accusing her former district of failing to accommodate her disability. Mariemont district of age discrimination and a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Waltherr-Willard, a French and Spanish teacher, alleged the district knew she suffered from pedophobia, a fear of small children, when she was transferred in 2009 from Mariemont High School to the district’s middle school. The teacher, who retired in January 2011 when her request to be transferred back to the high school was denied, accused the school district
of age discrimination for giving the high school Spanish teacher position to a younger instructor and a violation of the ADA for failing to accommodate her pedophobia. Waltherr-Willard said teaching at the middle school repeatedly caused her blood pressure to rise to dangerous levels. The court ruled the ADA “requires an employer to accommodate a disabled employee, but it does not require unreasonable accommodations.” The court also rejected the age discrimination allegations, saying the Spanish teacher employed at Mariemont High School is only two years younger than Waltherr-Willard. Dr. Caleb Adler, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience at the University of Cincinnati, said pedophobia is a recognized but rare anxiety disorder. “It’s a tough phobia. You can’t really get away from [children] when you’re outside,” he told The Chincinnati Enquirer. “When you’re a teacher, it may not be an issue with older students.” SARASOTA, FL - The A 17-year-old boy underwent the world’s first penis reduction surgery. The teen requested the surgery after his penis grew too large, restricting his ability to have sex or play competitive sports. When flaccid, it measured almost seven inches in length and had a circumference of 10 inches - around the size of a grapefruit. The urologist at the
University of South Florida who treated the teenager said, “There comes a time in every urologist’s career that a patient makes a request so rare and impossible to comprehend that all training breaks down and leaves the physician speechless. That question was ‘can you make my penis smaller?’” So few of us have this kind of problem, that it is easy to understand the surgeon’s incredulity. But apparently the historic surgery was a success. “It’s slightly longer and slightly thicker than the average male, but now it looks symmetrical, and the patient was very satisfied,” the doctor said. And right on the tail of this story comes the incredible case of a Czech woman whose vagina was so narrow she could no longer have sex. She has undergone successful surgery to have it reconstructed using a pig’s intestine. Surgeons decided to use a technique called a Mesh Augmented Vaginal Reconstruction. Pig tissue is often used because its genetic make up is similar to that of humans. Doctors made an incision to enlarge the narrowed area, they then used the mesh made from pig’s intestine to widen the walls of the vagina. That operation was also a success and the doctors now plan to publish a scientific paper on the technique.

The Changwon city fire department said workers responded to the 52year-old woman’s Changwon home after the robot vacuum cleaner latched onto her hair while she was sleeping on the floor. The emergency responders were able to open the vacuum and free the woman after about 30 minutes, the fire department said. “This case was quite special,” a fire department representative said. “We had seen weird things, but this was a very weird call that we received.” The fire department said the woman lost about 10 strands of hair, but was otherwise unharmed. The device appears to be similar to the Roomba, a circular robotic vacuum cleaner that has sold more than 10 million units since hitting the market in 2002.

At first doctors in China thought the baby girl had tumors, but computerized tomography after she was born showed the growths to be two 8to-10-week-old fetuses. Weighing less than an ounce each, they were far enough along to each have four limbs, a spine, a rib cage, intestines, and an anus, and to be connected through an umbilical cord to a single placenta-like mass. “Since it is impossible for the little girl to have conceived the pregnancy on her own, the fertilization of the twin fetuses, of course, belongs to her parents, which has gone to the wrong place,” a local doctor reported. Occurring only an estimated 1 in 500,000 births, the World Health Organization has classified it as a type of cancer called mature teratoma, but some researchers classify it as demised multiple pregnancy. The baby girl carrying the fetuses underwent successful surgery to remove them at just two weeks of age.

their phone activities. You certainly didn’t see any of that this evening. This audience was engaged throughout. They had grown up living, breathing and singing Bob Seger songs for 40 years. Yes, this show meant something special to every single individual that attended this show. When the familiar saxophone strains of “Turn the Page” waffled through the speaker system, the response from the crowd was deafening. The spotlight was really on the 17,000 background vocalists who poured every ounce of energy they had to give into that song. It was impressive, moving, and truly embodied the emotional bond the crowd had with the song. Perhaps the most poignant and telling moment of the entire night came during the second encore as Seger and his Silver Bullet Band played “Night Moves”. The crowd was singing so loud, the vocalist stopped his own performance to gather and compose himself he was so overcome by the moment. When he finally found his footing, Bob told those assembled in the arena he loved them. You know he meant it too! Bob Seger’s road to success the past four decades has been a fairly easy one to follow. He keeps his show simple, makes sure the set list is dominated with timeless classic cuts, and he knows exactly when to ‘turn the page’. There’s also one particular item this icon wants to make sure his audience will always remember – ‘rock and roll never forgets!’ Amen to that!
