From the Publisher’s Notebook My favorite grocery store is at it again!! Last week they charged me for stuffed clams twice (they were a “buy one get one free”)… $4.98. This week they overcharged me over $9.00 on a buy one get one free dog treat. That’s $14.98 in two weeks. You need to check all stores on a “buy one get one”—I’ve had drug and grocery stores “cheat” me. Seems to be an accepted thing in retail.

Stopping School Shootings: Address the Threat In the wake of the latest horrific shooting at Parkland High School in Florida there have been several “knee jerk” reactionary proposals to stop mass shooting incidents in schools. Many of these proposals have called for some type of gun control. I tend to believe that it is better to have an armed reactionary force present on the school grounds ready to respond to stop the attack. This might be one armed security guard, either current law enforcement or retired law enforcement or several officers. Retired military personnel might be used but with additional training in the use of force in the civilian environment. Notice I am saying STOP the attack. I am not talking about prevention. If an armed “security force” is present I am sure it will

have some deterrent thus preventative effect. If a School Resource officer hears of a plot by a student and intervenes or students or teachers find out about threats

and report them and attacks are foiled this is great. The incident was prevented. However, as more and more evidence comes out about the Parkland attacker (cow-

ardly, sick, psycho is what he should be called) it is sadly apparent that there were warnings that were not heeded. Apparently the once vaunted FBI failed to follow

up on tips. Local law enforcement may not have documented the killer’s violent incidents prior to the attack. Prevention is a multi-

faceted, complicated issue that has too many elements for people to leave to chance hoping all the pieces fall into place. Society, social media, video games and movies, the meltdown of the nuclear family, a lessening of religious upbringing and other factors all may have an influence on the student or “domestic” attacker. However if the attack is not thwarted prior to the violent incident then an armed response is the best option. Another horrendous possibility to be considered is a terrorist attack on a school. Many people are unaware of the Beslan, Russia attack on a school in September 2004. That incident turned into a three day siege where the terrorists held 1,100 hostages. They sys-

tematically executed and raped these prisoners.. After the police and Russian armed forces conducted a military assault the official death toll was 334 people killed and 186 wounded. Unfortunately in today’s world a terror attack on a school cannot be ruled out as a possibility. Will taking away guns from law abiding Americans help reduce the likelihood of a terror attack on a U.S. school? No. Having an armed presence that could respond immediately with force is a good option in my opinion. As a 30-year plus veteran law enforcement officer (retired) and former SWAT officer I have received training on operations in schools to end an attack whether from a deranged student, other citizen or terrorist. We trained to move to the threat and engage he/them with immediate deadly force. However, we would be responding. We would not already be “on the ground” where the incident was happening. We probably would not be familiar with the school where we would be operating. If an armed presence is stationed at a location they would have time to become intimately familiar with the layout of the location.

mountain path. In view tucked in a holster in his waistband was a semiautomatic handgun. No one was alarmed at the sight of an armed teacher. Again this is business as usual in Israel. In Israel they have decided to take security of their children and teachers as well as the rest of the country very realistically. They realize the best way to stop an attack is to attack the attackers and to do it immediately Not wait for a response.

things like “my kids mean the world to me”, “my kids are my most precious thing “ or “I would do anything for my kids”. So why wouldn’t they want to protect their children with an immediate response, which has been proven to work in an actual critical environment? There are already several states where teachers can carry on school property provided they have a permit. Some states only allow teachers to carry on public college campuses while allowing I have argued this point with peo- private schools to establish their ple some of whom are substitute own policy. teachers. Several in our traveling group would mention the “heavy security”. Now it’s common in U.S. airports to see officers armed with “military style “rifles. Recently when I watched the New Years festivities from New York I observed many officers armed with AR-15 type rifles. Prior to my retiring from the police department we had adopted a ‘Patrol Rifle” program where officers could with additional training qualify to carry a rifle to respond to terrorist attacks or active shooter attacks. Some of these rifles were employed in the Naval/ Marine Reserve terrorist attack here in Chattanooga. If we have come to accept officers armed with this type of armament at airports and large public events and tourist areas why do people balk at putting armed guards at schools and or arming teachers?

Israel in response to a terrorist incident in 1974 where 22 children were killed and 88 injured placed armed “security” at every school where there are 100 or more children. Mass shootings at Israeli schools are almost non-existent. The Israelis also arm teachers in schools. I have personally witnessed Israeli school children on a field trip moving on foot through the streets of Jerusalem. Following the group of children were two older gentlemen carrying World War II era M-1 carbine (rifles). No one was alarmed at the sight. It seemed routine as it is in Israel. Later on a trip to Masada in Israel I observed a group of school children on a field trip there. Walking with them was a male who appeared to be a teacher as he was herding this group down the I have heard many people say ENIGMA

least one Sheriffs Deputy stayed outside Parkland High School during the shooting and did not go inside to engage the shooter. This disgusting cowardly act is unfathomable to most law enforcement officers. But even if there was the rare failure to act by law enforcement or security, armed teachers would be inside the school and could engage or delay the attacker. I didn’t go into the gun debate. Criminals and deranged people steal or otherwise illegally acquire guns as in the Sandy Hook attack. I don’t believe disarming or depriving Americans will stop school attacks (they may use something besides firearms). I do think an immediate armed response is the best defense to a school attack. I really believe that if the heroic football coach at Parkland High had been armed that the outcome would have been different.

To make this long story short—I felt better that first day.

What was sore was my right shoulder blade, right arm, elbow, and hand. On a scale of 1 to 10, this pain was an 11. It was that bad. It felt as if someone had stuck a very large knife under my right shoulder blade. The pain also radiated down my right arm. The muscle in my arm was so sore I couldn’t even touch it. My elbow was the same way.

I now have gone for five treatments over a two week period, and I feel great. I haven’t even had to take an aspirin in nine days. It’s wonderful. If you are tired of the pain and want relief, I suggest you give Doctor Wall a try.

Vista Kicks The band that stays together plays together. Vista Kicks is a group of four childhood friends who left their homes in Northern California to venture to Los Angeles to rock and roll. The group lived in cramped quarters as all four shared a one-bedroom apartment. The experience confirmed their friendship and their desire to make music. This past fall they released their first album, Booty Shakers Ball that is a grab bag of styles and influ-

ences that offers the listener something new with every song. The band just started the second leg of their first headlining tour and we recently caught up with bass player Trevor Sutton as the band pulled into Las Vegas.

They had been playing music together before. They were a jazz cover band. This is in high school and college. We would get together and play music during the off-season for college. We all talked about being in a band together, having a rock and roll band, from early on and we just kind of ended up doing it. We have played music together and separately and some of us have known each other longer than others. I would say we really kind of came together as friends in high school. After high school and college, we kept in touch. When “Make It Real” was written, that sort of sealed the deal.

That was crazy, man. A little one-bedroom apartment … I thought we were close before but that was … ((LLaauugg hhss)) I don’t think that there is anything that can make you closer to someone than having to share an apartment where you have all your mattresses on the floor. You would walk into the bedroom and the floor was just mattresses. However, we had a lot of fun and I think there is something special about those first days in Hollywood. We really connected with each other, discovered each other, and built strong friendships. We bicker and bitch at each other occasionally but we usually talk it out and get over it. We just got comfortable with each other. When we first started writing songs, we would all sit in a room and write the song as we played it. We still do that sometimes … but someone would start it with an idea and we’d all kind of build on it. Now, with Booty Shakers Ball, some of the songs were written while we were on the road during off time, you know, between playing shows. We have been branching out more, trying to challenge ourselves to write songs individually, and then bring those to the table. Then we all take a couple of stabs at them, trying different things. It is coming along pretty well. I'm just trying to do a mixture of songs. Some rock and roll, because I'm doing a small tribute to Chuck Berry on the new album. I wrote a new song, “You're Never Too Old to Rock and Roll,” that is on there. Quite a bit of blues also.

They had one or two really big songs and then remained regionally popular and still draw big to this day in their hometowns. Other bands that fit into this include The Romantics (“What I Like About You and “Talking In Your Sleep”) and the Greg Kihn Band (“The Breakup Song” and “Jeopardy”). Despite whatever drama ensued after they were dropped by their record label the four guys that make up The Producers still get together to play from time to time when real life doesn’t interfere and when quite frankly the money is right. I’ve been fortunate enough to see them since the ‘80s and getting to see them twice in one calendar year was equivalent to winning the lottery for me.

with new wave with a sound that was kind of an updated Cheap Trick sound. And if you look at it they were kind of marketed that way. Cheap Trick was famous for their two camps – the heartthrobs of Robin Zander and Tom Peterson and the two goofballs of Rick Nielsen and Bun E. Carlos. Despite their good looks people gravitated towards Nielson and his stage presence making faces and running around the stage. Likewise for The Producers you had three out of the four that were the guys with the perfect hair and neon suits (perfect for that era) along with the one oddball the one and only Wayne Famous.

Every show I’ve seen with The Producers has been a sellout. Even when they played a side stage at Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga last summer there was a bigger than normal crowd for that stage. There was a buzz back then amongst people going to see them at the festival with people making plans and others without a pass looking to borrow one or wanting to know how much a one-day pass would cost.

Famous, the keyboard player wasn’t as pretty as Van, Kyle or Bryan but he was cool. He played a keytar and danced around the stage with it. Even in their videos he was kind of comic relief. He wasn’t as pretty as the rest but even to this day he is the most loved guy in the band. When I told a friend of mine I was going to see The Producers the first word out of their mouth was, “Wayne Famous!” City Winery was filled and there was a buzz in the crowd. Neko Case Plays To The Crowd Oh that voice. When Neko Case sings a ballad or a slower paced song – well you just have to take notice. Case began her set with “Nothing to Remember” then moved to “Furnace Room Lullaby” that began with her singing A cappella demonstrating her strong vocal before the band joined in. During her banter with the crowd Case informed everyone that the show was sort of like an all request show.
