Dear Rocco, My new in-laws are very nice people. However, they are cheap. We have not received a wedding gift from one family member. I have talked about this with my husband. I want him to confront his family about it but we just end up arguing. Do you think he should talk to his family? Rocco, they didn’t even buy us a card! I feel as if they are not acknowledging or accepting our marriage. Help! PB
II ddoonn’’tt.. Dear Rocco, Being an independent woman and a business owner I’ve sort of become set in my ways. I have certain people I socialize with, certain events I go to and so on and so forth. After being single for some time (by choice) I started to date someone. We get a long well and enjoy our private time together. What has started to bother me is that he seems to have become very dependant on me to do things like, say a mother would. I’ve had to come home early from my business to help take care of him when he’s sick, walk his dog and so on and so forth. I’ve had to cancel my plans with friends who I was seeing maybe once a week to maybe once a month if that. I’m also expected to stop what I’m doing to take part in his hobbies and such. We never go out to eat and I’m stuck home cooking for both of us. That being said, I enjoy his company I just feel at times like I have another dependant at home (we have our own places and he works full time) if you know what I mean. Am I in a healthy relationship? Am I too self-centered? Am I over-thinking? TV

Cool Cats While I was typing this I had a cat and a computer on my lap. It was a first for me. I usually type these articles at a desk at my house or a table at my girlfriend’s. However, I have a very sick cat, Hardy. Hardy really likes to spend time actually on me. So I am letting Hardy hang out in my lap while I type. Hardy is a very special cat to me. He was found at a Hardee’s restaurant, thus the name. Several years ago I went to the Hardee’s on Hixson Pike. I usually went to the Hardee’s in Soddy Daisy so this must have been fate. As I got out of the car I heard a growling coming from near the door. An employee was feeding a biscuit to an obviously hungry cat as he was growling as he ate. Cats do this sometimes if they are really hungry. I noticed this interaction but resigned to stay on course and go in to get my food. I was sure the cat was a stray but I had several cats at home. I reminded myself I did not need another cat. I got my food and sat down to eat. I saw several people starting to watch some kind of drama outside in the parking lot but I just continued eating. That is until I heard some lady say, “He’s gonna

Hardy even developed the habit of coming into the bathroom and “nesting” between my feet when I was using the toilet. Hardy had one annoying tendency though. He would often dart out the back door to go down the steps off the deck, usually to graze on some grass. He never ran away but if it was cold or raining it was irksome. However, this minor transgression was easily forgiven.

Last October Hardy began losing weight. He had weighed almost ten pounds at one time. He was a handsome, healthy cat. He lost over a half pound at one time. That’s a lot for a cat. We tried more food and then vitamin D shots and also eventually a steroid. It was determined Hardy probably had stomach cancer. Hardy’s weight leveled out but then recently he got down to seven pounds then six pounds three ounces. His appetite was still good but it seemed his body was not pro-
cessing the nutrients. I tried special foods, broths and eventually even baby food. Hardy was obviously not as energetic as he had been. One day about a month ago he had chased a laser beam like a “whirling dervish”. I tried it the other day and he noticed the laser but did not try to catch it. I knew then that he was probably going into a downward spiral. Hardy kept me company in my recliner while I worked on this article. I know with his weight loss and loss of energy that Hardy is not going to be with me much longer. I will miss him greatly. Some people don’t really get it when your pet dies. I’ve said it before pet people understand when your pet passes away. They know it really hurts. I want to mention two other great cats that I “owned”. Pet people know you don’t own your animals. You are just lucky they are in your family. Several years ago I was on a trip in Montana to visit a friend of mine. He lived in Livingston, which had a very nice animal shelter. His wife volunteered at the shelter and told us about it. My girlfriend at the time and I visited the shelter and while there we made the acquaintance of a very spirited small black kitten. The kitten was reaching through the cage bars to us and we got it out to play with it. The kitten climbed on our shoulders and reluctantly we had a worker put it back in its cage and we left. Later I mentioned to my girlfriend that if we were at home I would take the kitten home. How was I to know she would call the airlines and find out what was involved and what it cost to fly the cat home to Chattanooga? We returned to the shelter and got the kitten (we thought) out of it’s cage. A shelter worker told us that was the sibling of the kitten we had played with earlier. Well, as we had got it out and told it that we were taking it home we decided to take it and it’s sibling. One was named Curly and the other Moe as in the Three Stooges.A shelter worker told us there had been another sibling Larry but it had been adopted. Whew! I almost had three kittens. We took the cats back to my buddy’s home and we bought an airline approved crate to fly the kittens home. We decided to rename ‘Moe” as it was a female. I proposed she be renamed “Liv” as she had come from Livingston, Montana. Thus I imported two kittens from Montana to Tennessee. Liv and Curly had similarities and differences. Both were shiny black. They were outgoing but Curly more so. Curly was noticeably bigger and outweighed Liv by several pounds. One thing they both liked to do was
jump from furniture onto your shoulder. They could do this without digging into you with their claws. Curly could jump from the floor onto your shoulder from the floor with ease. However he preferred to jump from a counter or furniture.. He surprised several people at my or my girlfriend’s house by leaping from furniture onto their shoulder. I would sometimes think I was out of range of his leaps when I would feel 10 pounds of cat landing on my shoulder! Needless to say it freaked a few guests out when he jumped on them. Curly and Liv were very loving cats. They would meow until you picked them up then try to get on your shoulder and rub their heads against you as they purred loudly. I have had other loving cats like Hardy, but none who jumped or climbed on my shoulder to rub on me like these two. Sadly Curly and Liv both had intestinal problems. I likened it to feline “Crohns’ disease. They at one time had sleek coats and Curly weighed over ten pounds and was very muscular. Both ended up having to be given different medications for this illness. One time we wrapped Curly in a towel to try to hold him to administer a pill. Curly fought us and I could feel he was incredibly strong for his size. He managed to squeeze out of the towel he was so strong. This ailment caused me to give the siblings special food that was easier for them to digest. I would feed them separately from the rest of the herd. One ate on top of the washer while the other ate on top of the dryer. When I called them it always brought a grin to my face as Curly and Liv appeared to be racing down my long kitchen and into the laundry room. Then they would leap onto their respective appliances to eat. It looked like they had choreographed it.
stomach ailment until March, 2012. Liv lasted three more years until September of 2015. Her passing was very hard on me. She was my surviving Montana cat. She had battled the disease for longer than Curly and with many trips to the vet I had become even closer to her. I buried both in my yard. I will always remember my jet black kittens that I “imported” from Montana. Their playing with lasers, feather toys, their personalities and their struggle with digestive disease will always endear them to me. Hey some people bring back t-shirts as souvenirs. I had two great cats to remind me of my trip to Livingston, Montana.
Curly and Live loved to chase the laser of a laser pointer and both really liked to play with a cat toy I had gotten. It had a feather attached to a plastic rod. Curly would spin around in circles chasing the feather and then leap into the air trying to grab or bite the feather. Several times he was panting so hard that I had to let him catch his breath. He would lay down on my marble fireplace hearth and breath heavily until he caught his breath. I really believe he would have kept chasing the feather stick until he collapsed. Liv liked to sit in my lap and liked to sit on my knee when I was sitting in the bathroom. Both were super cats, very loving with outgoing personalities. Curly fought the battle with his ENIGMA

Pets can be such good companions you cannot help but love them. When they pass it really hurts but remember the good times to help you get through the loss. As I was typing this Freddy Mercury was on the television singing “Who wants to live forever?” I wish my cats and dogs could but they live forever in my memories. Thank you all my pets for the love and companionship. Special Thanks to the Stafford Animal Shelter Livingston Montana (No kill Shelter) where Curly, Liv and my great dog Sally came from.

A British nudist group is organizing an attempt at breaking the Guinness World Record by having more than 100 people ride a rollercoaster while naked. British Naturism said it is hoping at least 103 people will participate in the attempt to break the record for most naked riders on a theme park ride at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.
The current record was set in 2010, when 102 naked people took a ride on the Green Scream roller-coaster at Adventure Island in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England. The new attempt will take place on the notoriously bumpy Grand National roller-coaster. Participants are being asked to bring a bathrobe, flip-flops or tennis shoes, a towel to sit on and a bag to store their clothes.

investigation began when Sulphur City police got a call about a suspicious person in an all-black costume walking the streets and going into residents yards. When officers arrived on the scene they learned a male subject was looking through windows of homes and sneaking through yards. “Who goes around in a gorilla suit, peek-
ing in windows?” said one resident. When officers located the suspect—later identified as Jeremie Joseph Moran, 34—he fled into a nearby residence, ignoring police demands to stop. During a subsequent search of the home, cops found Moran wearing a “black gorilla suit” investigators say. Moran tussled with cops trying to handcuff him, but he was eventually subdued and placed under arrest. He was charged with multiple offenses, including unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling, methamphetamine possession, resisting a police officer with violence or force, and wearing a mask or hood in public.
Clark County has charged 34year-old Joseph Oberhansley with murder and abuse of a corpse in the death of 46year-old Tammy Jo Blanton in September. The Houston Police Department said the people called the 311 non-emergency line when they broke into the southeast Houston home, which was believed to be unoccupied, and discovered a tiger in a cage. A BARC Animal Shelter crew responded to the home with the Houston police’s Major Offender Animal Cruelty Unit

She was spotted by a passerby, who saw what was believed to be a half naked woman’s body in a box near the entrance to the dump around 9 a.m. Police say the woman was with a friend at a nightclub several hours earlier. The woman needed help getting to her car, so a man offered to help while the woman’s friend got their car. Both were gone when her friend got back with their car. That’s when the woman’s friend called Dallas Police and reported her missing. Irving Police say the woman was very drunk when they found her. Initial exams showed no signs of sexual assault. The woman said she doesn’t remember how she ended up at the landfill. This story makes me want to bang my skull off of something. Who knows what hidden talents I might have. It’s not a joke. began playing. The trauma to the head unlocked something unique inside Amato’s brain. Amato describes black and white squares appear in his mind when he’s at the piano. “I just follow what the blocks tell me to do. I do my best to take those notes and put them into playing,” said Amato. Amato has written a book about it his experience called ‘My Beautiful Disaster.’ What’s the luck? Think about all of those NFL players who have suffered multiple concussions, and none of them never learned anything. The Canadian mystery foot continues to remain a mystery. Canadian authorities said that they were unable to identify the person whose foot was found last year in a Nike sneaker that washed up on the Vancouver shoreline. The foot is the 15th that has been discovered on the British Columbia shoreline in just over a decade. About half of those feet were eventually identified, belonging to people who either died by accident or committed suicide, but the rest remain a mystery. Andy Watson, spokesperson for the coroner’s service, said the agency is “turning to the public for help” after exhausting all “of the available information” that was found at the scene. He insisted that the bizarre trend is not linked to “any sort of suspicious circumstance” and isn’t “cause for panic.” Sounds like the perfect time to panic, to me.
It’s Time For Some Spring Cleaning Now wait a minute, I haven’t even mentioned the kind of cleaning that needs to happen. I know lots of people are on this Marie Kondo kick, but that isn’t the cleaning we are going to talk about. For those that aren’t familiar with Marie Kondo, from what I understand, she walks you through throwing junk out that you don’t need from your space. In the process of cleaning out you are supposed to ask yourself how does this shirt make you feel? If the shirt doesn’t make you happy, you are supposed to throw the shirt out. Hey, if it works for you, great! Rock-on! However, the Spring cleaning I want to talk about is the clutter inside your mind. The thoughts that bog you down and make you believe you aren’t worth more. The voice that holds you back from chasing a dream. The feeling of self-doubt, and your insecurities, that keeps you from having the ability to make any decision, good, bad or ugly - your lack of selfworth that keeps you confined inside your walls away from others. It is time to break up, clean up, and move on from the emotions holding you back. Quit letting emotions of the past dictate your future. We often allow ourselves to get so distracted by the clutter we can physically see, that we never tackle the underlying problem. See, it is much easier to clean out the clothes, dishes, movies, books, etc. than it is to sit down and clear our mind. The actual act of removing an object from your space has such a powerful impact - instantly. Whereas dealing with an emotion may take several attempts, with no instant gratification. The work is
so much harder. Imagine how easy life would be if we could remove our negative emotions and thoughts like we do the everyday trash in our life. Oh, and let’s not mention that once that shirt is gone, it’s gone - but those pesky emotions or thoughts can pop back up at any time. We allow ourselves to get distracted because is it easier than learning to focus on the problem. #smilingselfie We aren’t willingly to put in the hard work, even though we expect results. We aren’t willing to ask ourselves the hard questions (those answers may scare you), even though we want freedom for what is holding us down. If we are being honest, we don’t value our life enough to make the investment that is needed in order for change to happen. Instead, we go out and buy an object (or Amazon something) that makes us feel better about our current situation, because it is so much easier. Watch out! That easy, quick fix gets very expensive, and you will just end up throwing it out next season anyway! In essence, the reason we have so much junk in our lives is because we are constantly trying to buy material objects that fill a void or put a band-aid over an emotion, instead of dealing with it head on.

How can we have someone in government who proclaims on TV that she is going to impeach the MFer (except she said the word).
We would love to have the 25,000 jobs the idiots in New York ran off - maybe then we could fill all these apartments downtown.
Build the Damn Wall.
Would love to see some sheep or cows in the pasture at the corner of MLK and Market Street.
I saw a pickup truck in a dealership showroom for over $80,000. That’s right, a pickup truck. Bernie is a joke, research his past.
When anyone starts talking bad about Trump - just look at them and say one word, “Hillary” (‘nuff said). Love the old black and white Andy Griffith shows on TV.
Get Off My Lawn Let me set the record straight— the first and original “Flower Man” was Chico, not Sandy. And no, Chico did not steal flowers from graves - as I heard it, he got his flowers from the wholesaler as they neared the expiration date. Ask around— Chico was the man. Does anyone remember the Mally Man? He pulled a red wagon around town selling homemade tamales. He would just holler out “mallys”, never saying the entire word.
We all owe Dixie Fuller some thanks for all the years of talent he was able to provide at Riverbend on the budget he had - thanks Dixie. Would like to see health reports on a regular basis on all the small beer breweries in town like they do restaurants. Maxine Waters now has someone in government dumber than her.
If the zoo is getting public money to operate, they should have certain dates that admission is free so all our citizens can enjoy it. Some of our locals are having a hard time paying their bills and their family is being deprived of this pleasure and enjoyment. If you can afford it, go on one ocean cruise before you die - what a thrill. I didn’t know government employees could go on strike. Are teachers government employees? Don’t you get it? Every time you raise wages or salaries, all the prices go up (food, gas, rent). It’s an endless cycle.
Bet no one remembers the blind man who stood in front of the Tivoli Theater playing the guitar & harmonica. He actually had a tin cup attached to the neck of the guitar for donations. He was there for years. Since we are going down memory lane, how about the man in a peanut shell costume who stood in front of the Planters Peanut shop on Market Street? Guess I am showing my age. Remember the Buster Brown Show on Saturday mornings at the State Theater (before it became the Martin )? Buster Brown was a big children’s shoe and sock manufacturer before we sold our soul to foreign manufacturers (maybe Trump can get some of the manufacturers back in the USA). Do you know any illegal aliens who deserve to be housed and clothed and fed instead of one of our vets or citizens? The bubble is getting closer to bursting— think about it. What happened to all the baseball leagues for the young people (Dixie Youth, Gray Y, etc.)? Bring back Bessie Smith Strut - the way it used to be. It was the best of Riverbend for all races. Needs to be free again. I miss Krystal chocolate pie and the donuts they made fresh in each store. Wish they had a venue like Songbirds when I was younger. If some important people (or people who think they are important) would shut the hell up racism would die. They just keep stirring it up.

It’s easy to be a socialist, all you have to do is have nothing but want people who do have things to give you part. There — I spelled it out in simple terms. McCabe should be prosecuted for lying— put his butt tin jail. When is CNN going to report the real news instead of the slanted crap they report. Pelosi needs to be tested for mental problems. Let’s see what she does with the $10 million when she gets it. Will she share like a socialist should? Yeah right. Until Next Time, Paul Burke Sr.
Presidential Legacies: How Will History Treat A President? We are often, overwhelmed, by the behavior, attitude, actions, performances, rhetoric, etc, made by our current elected officials, especially our President. Although, a leader’s rhetoric, integrity, effectiveness, efficiency, and apparent willingness to lead, all Americans, instead of, merely, those who may support him, is important, we should realize, it’s far more significant, how his service, might influence future generations, than, evaluating him, merely based on his popularity, or, how he does, at the polls! With that in mind, this article will attempt to, briefly, consider, review, examine, and discuss, how recent Presidents were thought of, when they were office, compared to, how, history considers them, today. How leaders leave the nation, in a relevant, sustainable manner, is what their legacy, should be based on! 1. Recent Presidents (since the 1940’s): No discussion of legacies, would be complete, if it didn’t begin with FDR. History’s
only President, who served more than 2 terms, he was known, during his administration, for introducing the WPA (and putting Americans to work, on infrastructure, etc), introducing Social Security, and, for, his many comforting talks. However, while he was, overall, a superb President, his legacy, was also marred, by permitting internment camps for Japanese - Americans, and denying entry to a boat load of Jews, driving them to return, to Europe, to face persecution, and, in many cases, far worse. Harry Truman ascended to the Presidency, after Roosevelt died, and was President, when World War II, ended. He was known for his, The buck stops here, and being the first leader, to use, a nuclear bomb. While this, probably ended the war in the Pacific, with Japan, many innocent people, and future generations, were harmed, by their exposure to nuclear by products. He also was President, when the U.S. sent troops, to Korea, and, many historians, judge that, as problematic. Dwight D. Eisenhower

(known, as, Ike), followed, and was popular, because, he articulated a message of peace, and calm, which led to the popular image, portrayed in Happy Days. Many sought a younger, more dynamic leader, and we elected JFK, who was considered, by many, as Camelot. After he was assassinated, LBJ became President, and became overwhelmed by Vietnam. Johnson got most of Kennedy’s civil rights, and other progressive legislation, enacted, but his legacy, became the war, and Kennedy, enjoyed the stardom. Then, we elected Richard Nixon, and although, he had the first diplomatic discussions, with China, suffers from the legacy of Watergate, impeachment, and the cover - up. Ford is mostly known, for pardoning Nixon, and only served in office, for a partial term. Running against corruption, the nation, then elected Jimmy Carter, who actually, had the audacity to believe, a public leader, must possess integrity and ethics. Although, unpopular for years, because of Iran, inflation, etc, his legacy, had been far kinder, reminding us, he was years ahead of his times, in the areas of human rights, energy conservation, alternative energy, gas mileage standards, oil reserves. His post Presidential involvement with Habitat for Humanity, and assisting foreign nations, arbitrate/ mediate disputes, etc, has enhanced his reputation and legacy. Ronald Reagan was, and is, beloved, by many, but historians, also point to, the Iran Contra scandal, eliminating fuel 2019

mileage standards, and the realities of Trickle Down Economics (a.k.a. Reaganomics), and that, after, the budget deficit dramatically, expanded, was the beginning of taxing Social Security benefits. Both Bush administrations has positives and negatives, but history, has spent more emphasis on the negatives, to date. While Obama’s legacy, is difficult to judge, because he was President, so recently, it has been enhanced by the inevitable comparisons with our current President. 2. How will this President, be remembered? President Trump, has far more strong, core supporters, who seem, to overlook any faults, than previous Presidents, but, also, more detractors. The nation has been more polarized, than ever before, in recent memory. Will Trump’s legacy, be, what he tells us he’s done, or, will history, treat him, unkindly, and, point to, his rhetoric, empty promises, misstatements, and polarizing, adversarial style, as harmful, to sustainable environmental protection, human rights, civil rights, etc? A President’s legacy, is, far more relevant and important, than how popular, he is, for the nearer - term! Wake up. America, and carefully consider, who you vote for, based on their plans, ideas, and solutions, rather than rhetoric and promises!

Hollywood Asks - Is Comedy Dead?
The Hollywood writers and producers cannot understand why no one is interested in watching their sit-coms anymore on TV? Well, did it ever occur to them that some of this stuff isn’t all that funny anymore? The movie industry’s comedy films are also getting killed at the box office. Stand-up comedy is doing OK, but in the new PC world, comedy routines often turn off half of the audience during any given skit, throw in politics and yes, you get some headlines but comedians are divided and conquered. What happened? No, what really happened? Is Hollywood in denial? Remember the audience is always correct, if they don’t like it, it just ain’t that good. And, ‘if and when’ they don’t like it, they sure as hell don’t want to pay for it, or spend their precious time listening or watching it on TV. Now then, there was an interest-
ing in article in the Wall Street Journal recently titled; “Comedy Slump Not a Laughing Matter,” by Ben Fritz published on June 26, 2018 which stated: “Last year’s m o s t successful c o m e d y, “ G i r l ’s Trip,” took in $117 million in the US and Canada. The last time the year’s highest grossing comedy grossed so little was 1995, when ticket costs were 52% less on average.”
gling for oxygen at the box office, caught between superhero sequels that integrate laughs and a vast buffet of standup specials, sitcoms, amateur pranks and original films on digital services l i k e Netflix a n d YouTube.”
What I, as a film critic writer, have noticed, is that every sit-com seems to brush up against the PC culture and then quickly back-away, and attack the politically expedient right-side of the equation. Perhaps, this is because the comedy writers all The article also stated: live and work in areas where “Traditional comedies are strug- most everyone has left-leaning

political views, and they assume it’s funny to everyone, and that if anyone doesn’t like the jokes, then they are ignorant, or out of touch with reality. Perhaps, it is this feedback loop which has now been labeled; the ‘Echo Chamber’ where conformational bias occurs. Indeed, it hardly matters what it’s called or why it keeps happening if no one in Hollywood, late-night comedy notices, because now that audiences have been split in half and every show is catering to the same half of the remaining market, no one is making any money, and audiences, yes, even on the left are getting bored with it all; it’s just not funny anymore. The Notorious Betty True Celebrating 15 Years of Backstreet Betty’s The city of Chattanooga has gone under quite a renaissance in the past two decades. Many credit the revitalization of the riverfront, others tech – after all we are home of the world’s fastest internet, but the true reason Chattanooga is shining bright are the many colorful personalities that make up the Scenic City. Betty True is one of those personalities. True is the owner and proprietor of Backstreet Betty’s Boutique, a ladies clothing and accessories store that celebrates 15 years in business this month. Many know True for her avid support of the arts, especially music along being one of the city’s first true fashionistas. Originally opening in the heart of Jack’s Alley downtown in 2004 until relocating a few years back to the Northshore, many a young lady and young adult has crossed her threshold looking for the right dress for a formal, party or casu-
al evening out with friends. Always with a welcoming smile and a hands on approach, Betty True is one of the reasons Chattanooga is a great place.

So therefore you try to have a little bit of everything and chase some of those trends yearly, but you can’t in Chattanooga go fully trend on because when you go on buying trips out of town – and I’ve been to New York, Vegas, Los Angeles and now these days I mostly go to Atlanta. During the bigger shows a lot of L.A. reps come in and they definitely refer to girls in this region of the United States as “the girls with the pearls”. And it’s pretty much true. It’s the girls that like the pretty sundresses and light easy-breezy fashion – and that’s
and it’s so comfortable, but it’s kind of dominated the fashion part of I need a new top to go with these jeans to go out because day into night you can put that look together and pretty much go anywhere in this laid back society of dress that we have in Chattanooga in particular and be okay. But then again with trends with the Kardashians these days and everything else you’re always going to have a lot of things on YouTube channels, you’re going to see on reality TV and they’re going to be really fast trends that are very now. And it’s harder than ever these days to stay on top of that because a lot of times if you see it on TV and all of a sudden girls in Chattanooga want that and by the time you find it and get it in – even three weeks later it’s already faded fast. It’s hard to stay with trends these days, so you have to do your basics and your staples – always.

Another thing in Chattanooga, we have a lot of tourist business in Chattanooga, so those people come from all over. So that makes me happy knowing that. If it’s something that’s not going to go with our city well with what everybody wants to wear to school or what their friends are wearing in our area you can throw that out a little more in the summertime because you’re going to have people coming from all different states and cities that will like it for them or where they’re from if it’s not someone’s cup of tea here in Chattanooga.

Marauders! The gloomy evening did little to dampen my spirits this particular night even though the rain had other ideas. Like a school kid I jumped puddles with a friend of mine to head to Marathon Music Works. This was my first trip there, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew whom the club owners were as the venue is the big sister of The Signal here in town, so I figured I was in good hands. The club looks massively large from the outside but 0once inside the cavernous room was divided into different rooms. I looked at this massive empty room where the bands were setting up and asked security how many people the place holds. They told me they’ve had upwards of 1,800 for one show. I asked if this night’s show was a sellout. I was told 1,300 tickets had been sold but they were expecting a walkup crowd.
My buddy Brad, who lives in Nashville, was my escort this evening and we lurked around the building to see what was going on. There was an elevated deck that was VIP or “exclusive seating. Those seats almost double the price of a regular ticket and seemed a little far away for my taste. If I’m going to a show I want in on the action. Interpol was the headliner. This was one of only two shows marginally close for me to road trip. It’s been a dozen years since I got to see the band perform. So long in fact, I have pictures on my MySpace page from the show in 2007. Interpol always struck me as a tough as nails indie rock that always had a sound reminiscent of something. Of course it was Joy Division I’m referring to and singer Paul Banks at times would straddle the mic like Ian Curtis at times

almost like a tease. Bans always had his hands full, however. Not just a front man, he played guitar. I remember the last show I saw he kind of stood sideways at the audience, often with a cigarette dangling from his lips for effects. Interpol was part of the great New York indie rock scene that burst out everywhere during the early part of the millennium. They, along with The Strokes made a lasting impression on me and were a breath of fresh air from the corporate music shoved down our throats. I know that last sentence seems to be a throwback to the late ‘70s – whose upheaval led to post punk and New Wave. Interpol and The Strokes as well as a handful of other indie artists caught everyone’s attention (in this list include the long line of bands whose name started with “The” – I refer to the as the “The” bands and that included The Vines, The Hiss and most famously The White Stripes). Interpol and the like ushered in a throwback sound with a new/edgy feel – something the kids of today weren’t used to and are unfortuENIGMA

tar work with a pseudo/psychedelic sound that caught my ears and many others. A bonus for me this night. Interpol was everything I remembered and more. Banks has matured and even resembles Ian Curtis a little. Touring to promote their newest release, Marauder, the band had the audience easting out of their hands. And the lights had everyone of balance. A great light show for a club gig, the psychedelic strobes and laser beams gave the club an alt-disco feel as a majority of the material was from the new album.
