The War On Trees A year or two ago I was driving on Hixson Pike when I noticed there was something different about the familiar skyline near the old Red Food/BI Lo store in the 5400 block. I saw that two very large trees had been cut down. This was very noticeable as they were out by themselves near the road and as said, were very large. Sadly now there were just two large stumps, like scars on the ground. I was saddened as I had driven by these trees for over 30 years. First as a visitor to Chattanooga then when I was working patrol for the Chattanooga Police Department in that area. Then as a Detective, and later every day driving to and from work after I moved to Soddy Daisy. I had watched them transition from budding in the spring, to full leaf, through the color change in the fall and then as their leaves fell in late fall. I wondered if anyone else

There was a large outdoor sign going up nearby but it appeared to be much higher than the trees. I felt that this might be a public relations issue for Earth Fare but apparently no one else cared or people were complacent as I was. I did not take the time to email or write a letter to the Chattanoogan.com, Times-Free Press or the Earth Fare corporate office. I just accepted the sad event and went on about my life. This event did remind me of when I had read a letter either in the paper or online where a Hixson resident was lamenting the cutting down of trees on Hixson Pike. I mentally filed the issue away for another also curious why they were cut cery store had been. I thought that day. down right as a new grocery store “Earth Fare” was taking over the

I know what you’re thinking… well at least some of you probably. Has Mark gone “tree hugger”? Short answer: always have been kind of. I have always hated seeing areas of land cleared for subdivisions, shopping malls and other urban sprawl/development. I much prefer looking at a rolling field or a copse of trees over that sort of thing. Perhaps it’s the anecdotal Indian blood in me (still unproven by DNA). I have a friend who lives in North Chattanooga. There are several areas near her that have recently gone under the developer’s scalpel. Many trees have been cut down in the nearby Dartmouth Street and Knickerbocker area. She has wistfully complained about losing the beauty and shade of these trees. She wonders what effect the loss of these trees will have on water run off in the area. I also wonder what studies were done - if any, prior to the denuding of this area. You may wonder what prompted this article. Recently I was driving on Highway 153 when I again noticed a big change in the landscape. Where there had been a natural barrier to the non-scenic view of the backside of the old Firestone building I could now see the “vista” of the Northgate parking lot and the Outback Steakhouse. I sadly realized a row of trees had been sacrificed for some reason there. Some of these trees were quite large and thus had been there for many years. Most if not all had survived the initial building of the mall in March, 1972 and the just short-of 48 years since but had now been mercilessly cut down. I wondered why. I got out to look and it does not appear the trees would interfere with the new construction going on there so I do not see the reason why the trees were destroyed. I thought the new school of thought in architecture/design was to have the building(s) “blend in” or soften the appearance by using vegetation, particularly trees. Perhaps the design team for the new buildings at the mall didn’t get that

memo. Another “de-treeing” that I notice was at Hixson High School by the home side bleachers. I used to run or walk the bleacher stairs there. There was a tree at the South end rear (top) of the bleachers that provided shade for about half of the bleachers. I had followed its growth as it finally started shading me in the brutal summer sun. There was another on that side just north of the press box that also put out shade for people who were crazy enough to be out there in the morning sun. Believe me, although limited, this shade was very welcome. One sad day I got there and saw the trees had been cut down. I just shook my head. As I hear every year my property taxes keep going up due to school expenses I guess I should have the right to inquire why “my” trees were executed. I haven’t taken the time.

I did a little research into the benefits of trees. Besides screening the view of mostly ugly buildings and giving people cool shade trees reduce smog, filter particulate matter which causes asthma, reduce the concentration of green house gases, muffle urban noise and filter drinking water in the soil. Just to name a few. Scientists state one person produces ten tens of carbon dioxide per year. A tree removes about one ton of CO2 per year so it takes ten trees just to counteract one person’s CO2 per year!

Don’t cut them if possible. My brother said he felt that developers should have to replant one half over the number that of the trees destroyed. Perhaps that’s a good formula. If you are about to cut trees in a public area please think about it. Many large trees are 60 to 100 years old. They cannot be quickly replaced. They may shield the area from view, or from being viewed, they may muffle sound or they may give a non-early rising stair climber like myself some much needed shade. Hey, if it’s as simple as that for a reason I’ll take it.

A huge reason I see to keep trees is the soothing mental effect on - Mark Haskins humans, probably animals as well. Studies have shown trees have a Background music: calming effect on people. In the “Expectations” - Katie Pruitt spring they are a beautiful green “Sara” – Fleetwood Mac and in the fall the changing color “Call It Love” - Poco of the leaves provides an incredi- “Love Wil Find A Way - Pablo ble natural color display. In my own subdivision most yards do not have trees. Mine is one of the few that has trees in the front yard. I luckily have woods behind me. But even that sanctuary was attacked a few years ago when a driveway was cut in and a house built. However, thankfully these people only cut trees necessary to put the driveway and the house in. They did not clear off a yard. If only more people or planners would follow this model of development. However, another neighbor cut out a soccer field from the woods. Many trees, some very large, were cut and/or bulldozed down. Some hawk habitat was lost in that project. Just the other day I was going to Erlanger East Hospital where I noticed two trees in the “median” at the entrance off Gunbarrel Road had been cut down. Again, I wondered why. So this tree attack is not confined to the Hixson area of Chattanooga.

A brain surgeon in London had a patient play her violin during a tumor removal to ensure her musical abilities weren’t affected by the procedure. King’s College Hospital shared video showing Dagmar Turner, 53, playing her violin while neurosurgeon Dr. Keyoumars Ashkan and his team removed her brain tumor. “We perform around 400 resections (tumor removals) each year, which often involves rousing patients to carry out language tests, but this was the first time I’ve had a patient play an

instrument,” Ashkan said. Ashkan said Turner’s brain was mapped prior to the surgery to see which parts of her brain were active when she played her instrument. He said the tumor was dangerously close to areas of her brain that affect the fine motor skills of her left hand. The doctors were able to remove 90 percent of the tumor without any damage to Turner’s musical abilities. An Indiana man is accused of forcing his wife into sexual slavery. took things a little too far. Harden’s wife told police she met him online last year. He said he was a Godly man and they both talked about how much the Bible meant to them. They soon married. A few months later, she said Harden revealed he’s a sadist. You would think that would be something that should come up BEFORE the marriage. What started out as experimentation in the bedroom escalated into abuse. She told police there were also times he would

duct tape or tie her up all day. Charging documents go into graphic detail of the sexual abuse, all while she hoped and prayed someone would hear her through the apartment walls. “We could hear them fighting sometimes and we heard a lot of loud noises upstairs, but I never thought anything of it,” a neighbor said, who lives below the apartment where the alleged abuse occurred. The Dubai-based creators of a jetpowered wingsuit said they marked a new milestone for Iron Man style

flight: taking off from the ground for a high-altitude flight. The Jetman Dubai team has previously demonstrated the jet-powered wingsuit with flights that involved taking off from elevated platforms, but Friday’s test at Skydive Dubai in the United Arab Emirates marked the first time the suit took off from the ground and transitioned to a high altitude flight, reaching nearly 6,000 feet. Vine Reffett, the Jetman pilot who conducted the demonstration, showed off the suit’s ability to hover, stop, turn and maneuver in the air. The approximately three-minute flight saw Reffett fly at an average speed of nearly 150 mph before parachuting to the ground. “One of the next objectives is to land back on the ground after a flight at altitude, without needing to open a parachute,” Reffett said in a statement. The failed implosion of an 11-story building in Dallas left behind a structure dubbed “The Leaning Tower of Dallas.” The former Affiliated Computer Services building near the city’s downtown was supposed to be demolished, but the

implosion failed to bring down the center of the structure, which remained in place, albeit lopsided. The structure was dubbed The Leaning Tower of Dallas online, where social media users shared photos of people pretending to hold up to the building remains. Lloyd D. Nabors Demolition said the remaining structure will be brought down this week using a crane and a wrecking ball. The company said implosions that leave behind the core of the building are fairly common. The building is being removed to make way for The Center, a $2.5 billion mixed-use project. Police in Florida are investigating the gruesome discovery of jars of human tongues in a home’s crawlspace, according to a report. The preserved organs were found during an inspection of the foundation in the Gainesville house, which was previously owned by Ronald Baughman, a former University of Florida researcher. Some of the jars date back to the 1960s. Investigators are looking into the possibility that Baughman, who

published studies in the following two decades, may have brought the tongues home as part of his work, the report stated. Baughman currently is a professor emeritus at the university. A 1988 abstract in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery posted on medical research site ScienceDirect lists a Ronald A. Baughman as a dentist involved in a case of oral squamous cell carcinoma in twins. A German farmer’s unusual marriage proposal involving a corn field and a camera drone had an unexpected side effect — it’s visible on Google Earth. Steffen Schwarz said an experience helping someone else plant a corn maze gave him the idea to grow corn into the shape of the words “Will you marry me?” in his field in the Huettenberg area of Hesse. Schwartz said he waited for the corn to grow and then asked his girlfriend to use a camera drone to check the area for wild boar. The woman spotted the proposal on the drone’s camera and turned to Shwartz, who presented her with the ring when she accepted. Schwartz said he was surprised to later learn his proposal had been spotted on Google Earth by curious Internet users. He said his aunt, who lives in Canada, sent him a screenshot of the satellite camera photo after she spotted it online. rush hour traffic and a man came out of the vehicle to flag down Dean’s patrol vehicle. Dean said the man quickly informed him that his wife was in labor inside the vehicle and the baby would not wait until they arrived at the hospital. Traffic came to a standstill while Dean donned a pair of gloves and helped the woman deliver her baby. The incident was recorded by Dean’s body camera. An ambulance arrived on the scene to take the mother and baby to the hospital, and Dean said he then took on the duty of directing traffic to get vehicles moving again. An unlucky-in-love Kansas man is offering a $25,000 reward for setting him up on a date that leads to his having a girlfriend. Jeff Gebhart, 47, of Prairie Village, said he came up with his unusual dating scheme after some failed attempts at online dating following his last break-up. “I saw the definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting different results, so I knew I couldn’t go back to online dating,” Gebhart told local news. Gebhart enlisted the help of some friends to create datejeffg.com, a website that attempts to use surveys with personality analytics to find him a compatible date. People who suggest women for Gebhart to date on the website could win $25,000 if he ends up in a relationship with their suggested woman. Women who suggest themselves on the site are not eligible to win the money, but they will be considered for dates, he said.

Jersey Boy With over three dozen hits to his name, Frankie Valli has been a successful performer solo and with the Four Seasons before, during and after the British Invasion. Between 1962 and 1994 Valli had 38 Top 40 singles with the Four Seasons and solo artist, seven number one singles. With his story (that of the Four Seasons) immortalized in the Tony Award winning musical Jersey Boys and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, Valli sees no reason to slow down. Valli recently stopped by the National Top 40 Hall of Fame and Radio Museum in Chattanooga to take part in the induction of 2020’s newest members and then perform later that night. Valli took time out to speak with Hall of Fame radio personality

Gene Lovin while visiting WFLI.

happens. Everybody thinks “Sherry” was an immediate hit. I’d say it took a month or two of really promoting. Basically, the real push came when Dick Clark had us on his show. And then one day we sold 120,000 records. The work that’s involved; we went around trying to sell the idea, “The Jersey Boys” as a play ten years before anybody became interested. It’s a part of what it’s all about.

We were recording songs we like and not listening to what anyone else was recording – although we were listening to everybody, we were not copycats.

business is all about. It’s challenging and sometimes if you’re not really on fire the fact that somebody else could be having a great success at the same time. People going into record stores to buy their record and they would look around and buy your record too. Success helps everybody.

I think the treatment of what you’re doing to it – the arrangement is so important and what you’re doing to the vocal of the artist that is doing it. There are a lot that fell through the cracks. I can remember, I was on Private Stock Records and I brought a song that I wanted to record called, “Here You Come Again”. You’ve heard that song?

If you think about it for a minute, it went from recording direct to disc – which is how this all started. Like I said, there’s going to be people that aren’t going to like it. I’ve notice there are more people now that know who we are because of that. We can’t please everyone. We know that. We feel bad for the people that hate it and love the fact that other people love it. We just can’t keep writing the same songs. We still play them – because they’re great songs and people love to hear them. So come to the show, you’re going to hear all of it. Four drummers, I guess, I suppose. Tim [Hart] was the first. Brent [Fitz] was the second. Robin Diaz, he was never in the band. He just recorded the first three records – that’s all he did. He didn’t tour with the band. He was just hired to play because they didn’t have anybody to do the record. I guess that’s four. I don’t know what the deal is with the changing. (both laugh) It just worked out that way. The first drummer, he was a friend of theirs and then they got signed. They really didn’t have a drummer. They would play Tyler [lead singer Tyler Connolly] songs and then they would play Tim songs. The Tyler songs were more fitting for what the band was trying to do. Tim ended up becoming the drummer, but he wasn’t like a professional drummer. So when they took the first record touring they kind of realized his skill set wasn’t where they needed it to be. Then sadly, and believe me they didn’t like to make the decision because they were great friends, but they had to let him out of the band. It just wasn’t where it needed to be, so they hired Brent Fitz and he came in as a professional and had a lot to bring to the table. He taught the

guys on the second record what it was really like out there. With the second record they started to get a little more success in the states and brought a lot of professionalism to the band. He got called to play for Alice Cooper and I guess that was more interesting for him. He decided on his own to leave to be in a position to leave to be in a position he felt more comfortable and more where he wanted to be. So that was his decision to go play for Alice. He called me and said, “I think this gig is perfect for you. You’re the right age; you’re the right mentality. You want this. This is exactly your skill set. You’re perfect for this and I think you’re the guy”. That’s how that all came in and how I got in the band through him.

First of all, I had to go through the audition process in Los Angeles and they had 20 drummers from the states auditioning through a talent agency management had

hired. I didn’t go through that. I went through Brent and he kind of set it up for me. I just had to fly myself to Los Angeles to be there on time kind of thing. I guess what I brought to the table, because the rest of the guys were Canadian – I’m Canadian as well, so I had that home country feel. I was young with a massive amount of drive and ambition and a massive love of the music and massive love for drumming and a love for wanting to tour and conquer. I guess maybe the other guys there didn’t really have that. And then on top of that, they also needed a singing drummer because Brent did all the harmonies – and he told me that. He said they need a singing drummer. None of these guys showing up for the auditions sing. And so when I showed up, sure enough not one guy offered to do harmonies for the band – and they put a microphone next to the drum set in the rehearsal studio where we were auditioning and none of them had touched it. I was one of the last guys to audition that day and I asked Tyler if he’d be willing to let me do harmonies with him and he’s like – yeah, that would be amazing if you know them. And I’m like, yeah, I got this. And so that was the inside tip that I had that none

of the other guys knew about. So when I came in and did the harmonies it was kind of like I had everything that they needed. I had to go through this secondary process back in Vancouver when all the guys were still living there and that’s when they decided I was bringing everything they needed. The singing was the big tipping point for them when none of the other guys sang.

I had to think more like a computer as opposed to a rock drummer. And that was not easy to do to be honest with you. But it has taught me a lot what a hit song really means. It’s easy to overplay and add all kinds of drum fills underneath stuff in a song, but the more you do that, the quality of the song can get lost. This new style has kind of taught me how to keep it more solid and simple, but yet still make people want to tap their feet or bop their head an stuff like that. You still have to have a fat groove but without a lot going on. The trick is how do you do that. So I spent a lot of time trying to figure that one out and adding sampled sounds on top of and incorporate

into songs was a new one for me too. I didn’t know much about that, so I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what that whole world is about and for now I feel I’ve incorporated it well and live I use those sample sounds on my light kit as well with triggers and stuff. It actually creates a really cool contrast live. When the real drums kick in to a chorus it really stands out. It creates this wicked contrast we never really had before. It adds real depth to our sound.

others. You can’t like them all the same. Some songs are just better, right? There’s jus something about that song that attracts you as a music listener. There’s a song off the first record that we only play in Canada called, “Nothing Could Come Between Us” that’s one of my favorite songs to play live. We don’t play it in the states any more, which is too bad. The reason for that is based on the fact we have so many records and so many songs now we can’t play them all. That’s a good problem to have, of course. That’s one of them. I’ve always liked playing “Not Meant To Be”. That’s off the third record. That one I love playing live. I don’t know what it is; it’s got this groove. We kick into the chorus, the whole crowd lights up, sing along. They know all the words. I don’t know it has this feel. It’s like this – it makes you want to weep inside. You can feel the energy between the band and the crowd – and it’s every night. And so, that song really stands out to me and I love playing it for that reason. That may be one of my favorite songs to play live right now.
