Liars, Liars, One and All "Liar, liar, pants on fire" goes the childhood chant-and, oh, how many of us truth stretchers there actually are. Obama, of course, is not the only truth-stretching office holder. As the saying goes, "How can you tell a politician is lying? His lips are moving." True or not, as already noted, the rest of us are at it, too--and we all get started early on. In fact, says researcher and professor of pediatrics and psychiatry Dr. Michael Lewis, "About 70% of kids are already lying by the age of 2 or 2-1/2. And by age 6, almost 100% are lying." And that fact goes a long way in explaining why so many parents-86% of us--are told lies. ByReputation.com's CEO Brandon Gaille has also found that 75% of friends lie to each other, followed by 72% of siblings, and 69% of spouses. He also reports that, "Most people lie an average of four times a

They stare at you without blinking much. 11. They tend to point a lot." Bottom line: Think twice before bending the truth. As philosopher Friedrich Nietzche once noted, "I'm not upset that you lied to me, I'm upset that from now on I can't believe you." And that goes for the mightiest amongst us, too.

TAX FILING SEASON AND TAX LAW CHANGES FOR 2015 Tax laws undergo some minor changes every year, such as inflation adjustments, renewal of deductions, new taxes, and tax increases. As the 2015 tax filing season has started, it is important to stay informed on the latest changes to the tax code and how they can affect you. This article will explore three key areas where some of the biggest changes have been made to the Internal Revenue Code (IRC).
of the tax year. Here is a brief summary of the non-compliance penalties: the penalty for the 2014 tax year is one percent of income for both individuals and families or $95 for single adults and $285 for families, whichever is greater. This may not seem bad at all when compared to insurance premiums; however, the fact is, the penalty structure is formulated to increase over time. In 2015, the fine will rise significantly to $325 per adult and up to $975 for a Affffoorrddaabbll ee CCaa rree AAcctt CChhaann ggeess ffoorr family or 2% of income. Contribution limits to 401(k), 403(b), and other qualified retirement plans have now increased by $500, bringing them to $18,000 in 2015. The catch-up contribution limit for individuals who are 50 or older has also increased by $500. A new year ushered in a new rule from the IRS that put restrictions on the number of IRA-to-IRA rollovers. Starting in 2015, taxpayers can do only one rollover in a 12-month period, irrespective of how many IRAs the individual has. A second 60-day IRA-to-IRA rollover could result in a 10% early withdrawal penalty, and the distribution will be subject to taxation. The old rules allowed individuals to do one such rollover per year for each IRA that they owned, which created penalty-free and interest-free loans. Sadly, the new change limits taxpayers from taking such tax-free rollover provisions.

For 2015, inflation-based adjustments are made for all tax brackets: the top 39.6% tax bracket, for example, will start at $413,200 for unmarried filers (up from $406,750 in 2014) and $464,850 for married joint filers (up from $457,600). The standard deduction for the 2015 tax year is $6,300 for single filers and $12,600 for married joint filers. The personal exemption gets an increase of another $50 to $4,000 in 2015. Cruz Control No sane person thinks Ted Cruz has an ice cube’s chance in hell or being elected President. I don’t think Cruz himself, whose sanity is highly debatable, think he has even the slenderest chance of winning the Republican nomination. But that didn’t stop the Texas Senator from taking the stage at Liberty University this past Monday to announce his candidacy. He wanted to be the first pachyderm in the pool and he managed that. So now we’re left wondering what he’s really after…
to even play at the national level. The first-term senator is best known for the 2013 government shutdown he spearheaded in his botched attempt to derail the Affordable Care Act. He’s also one of the GOP’s most vocal opponents of immigration reform. At a time when the national Republican party is trying to attract Latino voters, Cruz’s hard-line Tea Party rhetoric diametrically opposes those efforts. Most expect the middleground GOP hopefuls – Paul, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and the like – to realize the folly of trying to “out-conservative” Cruz and focus on the more pragmatic element of their party. Cruz has already pissed off the Republican National Committee by bashing his fellow party members. And he hasn’t been in the Senate long enough to earn enough quid pro quo from other lawmakers…
…Discerning the motives of crazy people is never easy. Discerning the motives of politicians is never easy. Discerning the motives of wack job pols like Ted Cruz is darn near impossible. The choice of venue for his big announcement says a lot about his intentions, however. By choosing to toss his hat into the 2016 presidential ring at the ultra-conservative private

university founded by the late Jerry Falwell (and now run by his son, Jerry Jr.), Cruz is trying to stake out the rightest possible spot on the conservative continuum. Which is fine, I guess. Except for a couple of things. One: Cruz’s grandiose announcement was held during one of Liberty U’s weekly convocations. The students in attendance were forced to be there and would have been fined by the school if they skipped it. This would explain the huge crowd… and the fact that several of the students in attendance were proudly wearing their Rand Paul t-shirts. Two: Liberty U is in Virginia. Cruz’s attempt to align himself with evangelicals and portray himself as a “national candidate” alienated the big-dollar donors in the Lone Star State… …So it’s going to be hard for Cruz to raise the kind of money it takes

…I’ll ask the question again then. What is Cruz after? I’ll speculate that he thinks he can carve off a big enough slice of the ultra-conservative base to earn himself some kind of payoff for delivering “his” block of voters to someone who really has a shot. Maybe he wants to be Vice President. Or the Secretary-of-Something-or-Other. Or have his own show on Fox News. As I said earlier, determining the motives of nut job pols is pretty much impossible… …Regardless, I think having Ted Cruz in the presidential campaign mix is going make everything just a bit more humorous. Not since Sarah Palin have we had a candidate as capable of truly incredible gaffes under the glare of the national media spotlight…

Dear Rocco, I loaned a good friend of mine money for groceries for her family last fall when she was down on her luck. She said she’d pay me back as soon as she could. She ended up getting a really good job and is now making more money than me. She, however, has not made any attempt to pay me back. I see her out all the time socializing with other friends and is always cordial when she see me. But she hasn’t paid me back yet. How do I go about asking for my money without sounding like a jerk? PATNA, India (UPI) - Parents in India’s Bihar state were caught on camera scaling school walls to help 10th grade students cheat on their exams. Officials said more than 600 students — possibly up to 1,600 — were expelled in Bihar after being caught cheating on exams Wednesday and Thursday as 1.4 million 10th grade students sat for the tests. Education officials said many students smuggled in textbooks and notes,
while pictures and video shot outside several of the state’s schools recorded parents and other family members scaling walls to pass cheat sheets to students. Education minister PK Shahi said it would be impossible to completely eradicate cheating without the cooperation of parents in the state. “It is impossible to hold completely fair examination without the cooperation of the parents. India’s poorest states, has only a 64 percent literacy rate, compared to 74 percent for the country as a whole. CHICAGO (UPI) - More than 150 Chicago firefighters were called to fight flames at a building housing one of the department’s closest allies — a fire extinguisher factory. Chicago Fire Department officials said the building in the Archer Heights neighborhood on the southwest side of the
city ignited Thursday night and the fire worsened to three alarms about 9:30 p.m., leading to a total 156 firefighters responding with 26 pieces of equipment. A portion of the building, which firefighters said housed a fire extinguisher manufacturing business, collapsed as a result of the intense fire, the department said. First Deputy Fire Commissioner Charles Stewart III said the nature of the blaze made it difficult to reach the flames with water. “We had one engine feed another engine to another engine until we got water on the fire,” he told WMAQ-TV. Firefighters said no injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remained under investigation Friday. SOUTH DAKOTA - The story starts with a teenager smoking pot with two friends in the basement of his father’s house. Mistake no. 1; don’t smoke pot indoors if there is a risk of being detected. That smell is impossible to hide. So the father discovered them and ordered the two friends to leave, but when his son wanted to leave with his friends his father refused to let him go. You would think that narrowly avoiding arrest for possession and consumption of marijuana would be enough adventure for a couple of teens for one night, but these two, cranked up on the sticky-icky, immediately went to round up 20 of their watery-eyed friends and laid in wait for the dad. When he went outside to move a car parked in his driveway, the mob surrounded the car and started beating on it and smashing the windows. Finding himself in a scene out of a horror movie, the victim threw that hooptie in gear and took off across the lawn. One neighbor said, “All of a sudden, I saw a car going 30 to 40 mph hit the curb. All you could see is headlights and kids running all over, then I saw a kid get hit while he was coming off the curb. That’s when they switched to start chasing each other in their cars.” The neighbor called police to report the incident. He tried to get the plates of the vehicles the teens were in but was unsuccessful. “Then it was just constant cars flying down these roads. They were hitting and swerving at each other. You don’t even see this stuff on TV.” Eventually, the mob dispersed. The victim was able to identify a few of the teens but didn’t know most of them. Kongos Invite World to ‘Come with them now’ Patience, they say, is a virtue. If there ever is a band that totally understands that concept, it’s the four brothers that make up the break out group, the Kongos. Consisting of Dylan 28 (bass), Daniel 25 (guitar / vocals), Jesse 30 (drums) and Johnny 32 (accordion, keys, vocals), this band of South African born siblings that currently resides in Scottsdale, Arizona released its self-titled debut album in the winter of 2007 to little or no fanfare. Fast forward five years later and the group’s second effort called Lunatic seemed to be following the same path as its predecessor. The only difference this time was the rock solid belief by the brothers they had real hits on this recording and they were prepared for the long haul to see it through. Not only was their belief rewarded with the platinum certification of their hit single “Come With Me Now”, the Kongos went out and produced an unprecedented seven separate videos for songs on this record they released via YouTube. Led by “Come With Me Now”, the strategy paid off with the videos garnering over 35 million hits. Though Lunatic has been released four different times over the past few years, it has finally settled into a groove. It demonstrated the solid belief held by the brothers they had a hit on their hands. All they had to do was patiently wait for the rest of the world to figure it out. It also helped to have an incredible family support system in place spearheaded by their

I don’t think you have to, but one of the main advantages of doing the videos was the simple fact that YouTube is such a massive visual sharing platform. It really helps spread the word about your music better than any
other source online. At least that’s what we found out. People tend to share video links of artists they really like more so than they would a Spotify link or iTunes. I also think that videos add a visual element to a band that enables the viewer to identify and relate to what they are seeing and hearing. Videos are great way to see what a band looks like and get a visual vibe of what their sounds is.

I actually think there are benefits to both. There are so many great bands in the past that were
the door, there was no way for your music to be discovered, At the same time, there was more of an investment by record companies to go out and discover new artists. That ritual deepened the attention people gave to music back then. What surprises me, however, is we will meet kids out on the road that still enjoy going to record stores. Today, because there is so much music available, it’s easy for people to jump from band to band because they like a particular single by the group. There are a lot of people at our shows that actually have invested considerable time listening to our album to learn the lyrics. So, I don’t think that particular experience has gone away. I think in some ways, with everything we’ve been talking about, it is actually easier for kids today to invest themselves in a band because it simply doesn’t cost very much to do so.

Honestly, nothing like that happened to us. What we would do was write a song and have great faith we had composed something special. We weren’t naïve to think everything we wrote was going to be popular because frankly, that is totally out of your control. My brothers and I always had total faith and commitment to what we were doing. At the end of the day, what we’ve learned is it all comes down to luck. We had written “Come With Me Now” in 2008 and it wasn’t until 2013 when whatever coincidence or incident happened, the song clicked on American radio. Now the song could have gone completely unnoticed. Would that mean it is still not a great song or didn’t have hit potential? Our father was in the music business and supported us for a very long time – and continues to be there for us to this very day. We also had the luxury of not having to have day jobs. Our parents took care of that concern of day-today worries by providing for us. For most people, the concerns of daily life more often than not outweigh the realities of pursuing music as a profession. There’s just not enough hours in the day to work a job, come home and be creative, write a song then rehearse. Then there’s the factor of having enough money to actually go out on the road outside your local area and tour. If it doesn’t happen soon enough for a young band, the simple reality of existing becomes a difficult thing to overcome. Like I have said, we were extremely fortunate to have an incredibly supportive family see us through this process.

For us it was absolutely crucial. Our dad was a veteran of the music industry and he had seen the potential rich and rewarding career you can have in this business. On the flip side, he had also experienced a lot of the pitfalls. He was able to advise us on how to avoid the same mistakes he had made. In other words, we
didn’t have to constantly reinvent the wheel as we moved forward. Also, being a songwriter himself, my father was able to hear our music with a fresh pair of ears. If we had a problem in
the studio with a song, he could walk in and tell us immediately what was wrong or what we were going for. Since he wasn’t attached to the music like all we were in the recording process, his advice was invaluable.
the same time, I don’t know if it was better 20 years ago when you had the downside of the sources of creativity controlled by a smaller group of people. I’m talking about radio and the
labels. There is an element of democratization that exists now. The problem today is how does an artist monetize their creative work so they are rewarded for it? I think we are getting closer today with the streaming models that are available. Honestly, I

Well, we still do discuss the pros and cons of signing to the record label. On the pro side, the access you have to mass media is still very much controlled by the major companies and it simply isn’t as easy to get the word out about your music when you try to do things independently. The cons are the ones everyone always complains about. First and foremost is the battle over creative control. That said, we had designs on making the Kongos a huge band and didn’t think it was possible to do it as an independent. We knew this group would need partners along the way to accomplish our goal. We were able to strike the balance over what we wanted to do musically with a partner, in this case Epic Records, who could help spread that music further and wider. Epic released LLuunnaattiicc as is. The album had been released independently by us a couple of years earlier. So the sound and the songs existed in the world. Epic simply spearheaded the marketing of the album and increased our visibility where the radio picture was concerned. Overall, we’ve been very happy with our decision to sign with them. The label understood we were absolutely noncompromising on the music and they were cool with that. That doesn’t mean in the future that we are wedded to any particular style of music, or opposed to moving in a new direction. We just wanted to make it clear that whatever music path we follow in the future, it will be a band decision.

I can see that coming. If I were to make an educated guess now, I see a future where music isn’t necessarily sold, but used as a marketing tool to get people to come and see the band in concert. The value of recording full album has been greatly diminished by the Internet. Fortunately, you cannot down-
load the live experience of being at a show. There’s a certain energy and vibe of being with a group of people that are interested in the same music you are. Maybe one day they’ll figure out how a virtual reality that plugs directly into your brain. Until then, attending concerts in person is still going to be the most entertaining experience musicians can offer. If you talk to a 14 or 15-year old kid, the concept of paying for recorded music is gone. In their reality it simply doesn’t exist anymore. Personally, I don’t really care that much. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to sell records and making money from something you’ve created. At the same time, if kids don’t want to buy music and prefer getting it some other way, yet still come out and attend our shows, I’m fine with whatever way they used to get turned on to the Kongos.

Next thing you know the sound worked in the song.
