An ACA Backer Sees End to Workplace Coverage When the Affordable Care Act was enacted four years ago, I found the new law’s approach so misguided and destructive that I promptly discontinued my company’s employerpaid health insurance benefit. Now it seems one of the Act’s chief architects and defenders thinks I was only a bit ahead of everyone else. In his new book, “Reinventing American Health Care: How the Affordable Care Act Will Improve Our Terribly Complex, Blatantly Unjust, Outrageously Expensive, Grossly Inefficient, Error Prone System,” Ezekiel Emanuel predicts that the proportion of private-sector workers who receive health care through their employers will fall to below 20 percent by 2025, compared to the current figure of just under 60 percent. Though I suspect we share few other opinions about Obamacare, I think he is right about this. I have written many times about what I see as the deep flaws inherent to the Affordable Care Act. We have already begun to see some of these play out as the law begins to take effect, or at least the few parts of it that the administration has not
postponed. I want my employees to have health insurance. As far as I know, all of them do. But rather than have our firm choose a plan and pay for it, I now let them make their own arrangements. Some pay to participate in our company’s plan via payroll deductions; others are covered on plans through their spouses or, in the case of some younger employees, through their parents. Some of the money I used to spend on employee health insurance now goes to pay higher taxes that help fund the government’s health insurance subsidies and some went to my workers to spend as they choose.
government or some combination of the two will be a net positive. “You might put it under positive, unintended consequences,” he said. Many health experts agree with him that such a change would be good for the system, according to The New York Times, though Democrats will face even messier political fallout than Obamacare has already brought them if Emanuel is ultimately right. The truth, however, is that whether or not Emanuel is right about it being a good thing, the trend of private businesses getting out of the health insurance arena is probably irreversible. Businesses want to do business, not shop for health care.
The fact that so many Americans currently get their health insurance through their employers is something of a historical fluke, created by wage controls during World War II that limited raises. Subsidized health care became a common form of alternate compensation. More recently, apart from the continuing tax benefit available to employerIn an interview, Emanuel said the paid health insurance, the biggest shift from employer-paid coverage advantage of a company plan is to coverage paid by patients, the that, in most cases, all full-time workers are eligible for coverage regardless of their individual health. Now that the Affordable Care Act has outlawed health-based rejections by private insurers, employees can get their coverage without employers’ help. There is simply much less need for most businesses to shop for insurance on their employees’ behalf. While the law fines large companies that do not offer coverage, the rising cost of premiums may eventually turn the decision into an exercise in cost-benefit analysis. For businesses like mine that are too small to trigger penalties, the incentive to fight the tide of rising costs is even smaller.

also points out that his rosy view, as he freely admits, rests on the government exchanges achieving and maintaining a seamless user experience. Bennett observed, “The nightmarish launch of the healthcare exchanges alone should be enough to convince anyone that just because something is in a law doesn’t mean it will happen.” My guess is that the Affordable Care Act is likely to see some major changes down the road, but that doesn’t mean we can go back to our old system. That ship has sailed. Once enough businesses, or large enough businesses, reset employee expectations, subsidized health insurance will go from a benefit necessary to secure quality talent to an optional perk that individual employers can choose to offer or not.
The Affordable Care Act’s approach of guaranteeing that consumers can purchase insurance that covers preexisting conditions virtually whenever they want (or at least during annual enrollment periods) is financially unworkable. It will let too many people wait until they are sick before they buy coverage. But the law could require insurers to renew policies, or issue replacement policies in the case of people switching carriers, to customers who have had coverage and subsequently saw their health decline at better rates than they’d offer to individuals signing up with the same condition. Such provisions would encourage people to buy coverage before they actually needNot all analysts agree with ed it, and it still would not require Emanuel’s view that company employers to get back into the health insurance is on its way out, insurance game. or that it would be a good thing if it disappeared. SIX FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT UNFILED TAX RETURNS Several taxpayers have not filed taxes for nearly a decade. In fact, some have never filed their taxes. So many wonder about what will be the statute of limitations for unfiled tax returns. Some people are not in a position to pay the IRS, so they wonder if it is better to file only after when they can afford or if they should file in any case. You Gotta Have “Friends” Neil Potter is a lucky guy. He was the sole winner of the Euromillions $178.5 million lottery back on March 21. The now-retired auto shop manager from London said he “had a feeling” he was about to get lucky, but still turned pale with shock after matching his ticket numbers with those announced on the telly. Neil and his long-time girlfriend, Nicky, went car shopping the next day and soon booked a vacation. They were spotted at London’s Gatwick Airport as they skipped out of England to avoid the media frenzy... ...So I was kind of surprised when Neil invited me to be his Facebook friend last night. I don’t recall ever meeting him, but his short list of FB friends was comprised mostly of people from my birthplace in England. Still, I had no recall of ever meeting Neil. I have an English cousin named Neil, but “Trotter” is not his surname and he is several years older than the lottery winner. I didn’t know Neil Trotter was a lottery winner until I Googled his name and saw numerous online stories about his good fortune. I accepted his friend request any-
way... ...Before too long, Neil was messaging me to say he was giving away about $2.47 million (converting to dollars from English pounds on these amounts) to five random strangers to “share his good fortune.” He asked me to send an email with my name, address and phone number to an email address he provided. So of course I did. He replied to let me know that I had been selected as one of his beneficiaries. I was obviously delighted. He gave me another email address to arrange receipt of my funds. The email address belonged to the Chief Accounting Officer of the Piraeus Bank in Ukraine. Not long after I sent an email to that address, I got a reply asking for my bank routing number so Piraeus could get me my money. All I had to do was pay a small transfer fee... or, if I preferred, I could pay a “courier fee” to Pacific Express and they would get me a check...
There is a Neil Trotter. He did win that big Eurovision lottery prize. Sadly, he is not the owner of the Facebook account that requested my friendship. I knew all that before I replied to the “Neil Trotter” that sent me the request. I was targeted by the latest irritant on Facebook. The online scam... ...I seem to get an increasing number of friend requests from people I don’t know who have brand new accounts. I also get messages from people with “foreign-sounding” names who want me to email them. This is in addition to the ongoing annoyances I get from my overblown list of existing “friends.” If I could go back in time to when I first set up a Facebook account (back in 2007), I would only accept friend requests from people I actually know. And if I could add one feature to FB, it would be a “mass delete” option that would provide my friends list in a long form with little check boxes. Click. Click. Click. Click. Click. Boom. Gone...
...There is no such company as Pacific Express. There is a Piraeus ...Don’t get me wrong. There’s a lot Bank, headquartered in Greece. I still like about Facebook. I’ve They do have offices in Ukraine.

The flip side of that is that I’ve learned that some people I formerly considered fairly normal have some pretty wacked-out ideas. I’ve learned more about some people’s personal lives than I ever wanted to know. (What is it about FB that makes some folks overshare?) I think we’re starting to see the beginning of the end of Facebook. It’s only a matter of time before something less annoying comes along. But then... I didn’t think I’d still be on FB when I set my account up back in 2007. Before the death spiral is complete, however, I’m hoping one of my real friends wins a big lottery and decides to share some of his/her good fortune with me. A Pennsylvania man tried to prove a point about his neighborhood having a poop problem by bringing a big, brown bag of dog droppings to a municipal meeting on Thursday night. Ken Guldin presented a large grocery bag full of dog feces as evidence at a meeting with Lower Macungie Township commissioners to prove that poop was an issue in the age-restricted community of Wild Cherry Knoll.
When board of commissioners President Ryan Conrad asked “Is that dog feces?” Guldin answered with a “yes,” according to The Express-Times. Even though Guldin informed Conrad that the poop was doublebagged, the commissioner requested that the stinky sack be taken off the table. “I appreciate that you’re willing to clean it up, but we don’t need that...” he said. The Times asked Guldin, 68, to estimate how much poop was in the bag. “I didn’t weigh it

to burn a doobie. For most people it takes a lighter or a match. This Florida man nearly burned down his house and blacked out the whole neighborhood. Well, there is a price to pay if you want to grow really good chronic, but Ramon Munoz-Rodriguez didn’t want to pay that price. Instead he decided to steal the electricity he needed to grow the nearly 70 marijuana plants he had in his house. Volusia County Sheriff’s officials say power company technicians arrived at the site to repair a blown transformer fuse. The replacement fuse blew moments after installation, which led to a small fire in a home’s meter box and the discovery of extra wires that were illegally siphoning more electricity than a typical house needs. The blown transformer blacked out the whole block. According to Volusia deputies, Rodriguez, 43, had 51 five-foot tall plants and an additional 17 one-foot tall plants in the house. When deputies arrived he was forced to execute his emergency plan of throwing all the plants over the backyard fence. Rodriguez was charged with possession of narcotics paraphernalia, possession of marijuana over 20 grams, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and manufacture of marijuana.

Switchfoot Rocks Hard It seems like only yesterday Switchfoot were the fresh-faced leaders of a new movement in popular music – that of Christian rock. Unlike other Christian bands – and there have been ones since the infancy of rock and roll, Swithcfoot took a different approach to their songs. They weren’t rah-rah religious songs with mediocre music and preachy lyrics, they were and continue to be modern rocks songs that do tell a story without the fire and brimstone of previous stereotypical Christian rock. The music with it’s positive lyrics managed to bridge that gap and they gained and continue mainstream success without having to sell out their souls to an industry that literally eats their young. Switchfoot became a pioneering band and with a
clan, modern sound ushered in a new wave of what was soon dubbed positive rock. Their music also opened the door for Christian metal blowing the doors off of all previous stereotypes. Mainstream success followed and continues justifiably so today. The band was in fine form at the Buckhead Theatre as they hit on all cylinders to a full, yet intimate crowd. Mixing some of their more familiar tunes with cuts off of their most current release, “Fading West”.
Frontman Jon Forman interacted well with the crowd, as he easily won them over as his and the band’s performance was high energy. When their 13-song set was over they not only came out for an encore, they came out for two encores finishing the night off with “Mess of Me” and “Needle and Haystack Life”.
