with an open mind that there is a superior being in charge. And because there are so many miracles that take place after science and medicine (a science itself) that prove previously believed thesis to be wrong or not fall in line with what usually happens. We spend too much of our time trying to disagree with things we don’t understand instead of keeping an open mind and be willing to be open to some theories. Nothing is exact, nor should we care if it is or isn’t.

Dear Rocco, Why won’t anyone love me? For some reason people seem to run in the opposite direction when I come around or consider me bad luck. Even my own kids don’t want to be around me. No matter what kind of relationship I attempt they all seem to fail. Why? WR Dear WR, You need to take a close look at yourself. You seem to relish in the role of being the victim and hold yourself responsible for all your problems withot realizing you are not soley responsible for your suc cess and failure. It seems like you have a history of being around people that artificially keep you down and when things seem to go well you self-sabotage things because you are happier being unhappy or playing the victim. Instead of going into a new relationship with an open mind you subconsciously look for a way to sabotage it. I’m not sure why you kids are the way they are except maybe you wanted them to like you o much you smothered them and in doing so they turned against you – at least for now. Learn to love yourself. You might be surprised once you do that how things will start to fall in place. Dear Rocco, Why is my marriage failing? I love my wife, I really do, but she gets abusive at times and I’m not really sure why. This is not the first marriage for either of us and we’ve known each other a long time before we got married. I thought I

finally found my soulmate but when your soulmate screams at you and throws things at you and tells others you hit them – which I haven’t, what am I supposed to do? NT Dear NT, Grow a pair and get out. Make a clean break. The fact both of you have been married more than once tells me you are both emotionally immature and probably self-centered to a degree. Why did you marry your wife or any of your wives to begin with and at what point did things start to go down hill. You both are spoiled brats who are used to getting your way and when you don’t… well bad things can happen. You too are the same as an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object. You’re both better off alone. Run.

Dear Rocco, I am 15. My best friend has a mother who is always on her case about everything she does. She is the youngest of three siblings. Her mom is always after her about boys calling, housecleaning, and other chores. Everyday I go over and help her with her chores because she is not permitted to go out. My friend makes it worse by yelling at her mother, forging her signature, and lie to her. How can I help them? EA

Dear Rocco, Do you believe in science? And if you do are an atheist or anti-religious? NB Dear NB, Faith or Christianity work hand in hand. And if she chooses you over her mother you will ruin any chance of a cordial relationship you could have with her. At such a relatively young age there is no way to know how long the two of you will be close friends. Sure, you may stay friends forever but life happens. After high school there’s potentially college, getting a job and starting a family of your own. Despite your friendship you are not actual family except in spirit. And if you are the reason for the two to eventually becoming estranged; well that’s nothing I would want to be a part. After all, the two of you are teenagers.

Chattanooga Area Youth Soccer Teams & Tryouts The fees to join Chattanooga area select teams/clubs vary from lows of about $160 for half a year to a few hundred dollars per year to around $850 or more per year. Most teams will also have a uniforms fee, and some teams will have a monthly team fee in addition to the joining fees. Costs also vary with the levels of travel and number of tournaments teams go to, with gas, food, and sometimes hotel expenses, among other costs.

What is “select soccer”? Youth select soccer is for boy and girl players from 8 to 18 years old (U9-U19, the U stands for “under”) who have played soccer before (recreational soccer or school), and who want to play with teams at their level of ability on a more advanced level than recreational soccer, to further develop their soccer skills (mentally and/or physically). Most clubs and teams will have tryouts starting in midMay and early June. Players often sign a commitment agreement to a team in late June which lasts for about a year. Two women invite the pizza boy into their apartment. No, it’s not the opening of a porno, but it does start out like one. Two women hatched a plan to rob a pizza delivery person because they wanted money to buy drugs, according to police in New Hampshire. Claremont police said that they have arrested 31-year-old Debra Pitt and 34-year-old Jennifer Tozzi, after being accused of inviting Daniel Tarajkowski into their apartment, where they stabbed him several times. According to the police investigation, the woman

called Domino’s Pizza and made an order. The women were not interested in the food, but in the money that the delivery person was carrying. When Tarajkowski arrived at the women’s apartment, Pitts invited him inside. Tarajkowski entered the apartment, where the women pulled out knives and asked for his wallet. When Tarajkowski refused to hand over his wallet, Pitts stabbed him several times. Tozzi then grabbed his wallet that contained $300. A neighbor who heard the commotion intervened and called the police. Pitts has been charged with armed robbery while Tozzi has been charged with conspiracy.

Ward recorded him and then threatened to tell his wife about his love for black women unless he paid her more than $5,000. The victim paid her some of the money, but she still sent the videos to his wife. When Ward threatened to send the videos to the victim’s children, he called the police. The First 100 Days Call it an artificial measurement if you will, but Washington has always put a good bit of emphasis on a new president’s first 100 days in office. President Donald J. Trump was making bold predictions about his first 100 days until about the 50-day mark. Things were looking bad on a lot of fronts and there was no sign of improvement on the horizon... ...We really do need to recap. It gets confusing. You have to start with the fact that several members of the Trump campaign are under investigation for potentially improper communications with the Russians. Yes, those same Russians who tried to sabotage the Democratic National Committee and tilt the election for Trump. This kind of investigation is... here’s that word again... unprecedented. If a budding spy novelist has proposed such a thing to his publisher, he’d have been laughed out of the room...

ongoing campaign investigations... at least for a while. But the health care bill was yanked before a clearly-doomed House vote and Speaker Paul Ryan took most of the blame. Regardless, there was no big

he did was name the guy he was told to name. With clear majorities in the House and Senate, the Republicans ensured Gorsuch’s confirmation...

course and played golf on at least 13 occasions, according to The New York Times. The Times found that Obama spent no days at a golf course during his first three months. Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton also spent either no time or very little time golfing during their first 90 days — Bush made no trips to a golf course, while Clinton spent three days at courses... ...There are a lot of ways to measure success and failure. Thus far, Trump’s efforts to move the bar have had mixed results. As long as those investigations into his campaign’s connections to the Russians are hanging over his head, the president will continue to have record-low approval ratings...

legislative win on health care... ...Trump is also outshining his predecessor at golf. As a candi...Oh, remember that YUGE date, the billionaire political wall that candidate Trump hobbyist loved to criticize insisted would be a high prior- then-President Obama for his ity if he got elected? Well... it’s public golf outings. During his been booted out of the budget first three months in office, — Mark Bedford because the whole darned Trump spent 19 days at a golf thing might collapse under the weight of it. The Mexicans won’t have to pay for anything...

...Thus far, Trump’s big “win” ...A big legislative win on has been the appointment of health care would have moved Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme the spotlight away from the Court. But, let’s be honest. All

Reminisces from the Range I have been teaching the Tennessee Handgun Permit class since 1996. That’s as long as some of my students have been alive. It has been a great experience as it combined two things I like, guns and teaching. I had been told a long time ago that I should be a teacher when I was instructing firearms classes with the Chattanooga Police Department and helping instruct during Special Weapons and Tactics schools given by the C.P.D Swat Team. I got started when a friend who was an instructor of the Tennessee Handgun permit class asked me to help him with some of the classes. I quickly began filling in for him and when he retired and moved away I began teaching the class several times a month. This was the almost perfect job. I got paid to teach people when they could legally use a firearm to defend themselves, safety with their firearms and how to shoot. A few years ago I had an elderly gentleman attend class. As members of “the Greatest Generation” in my experience always do he sat quietly, listened intently and took notes. I did not know how old this gentleman was. During a break I asked him what type of handgun he was going to use. He related that he was going to shoot a type of gun he had not fired in over 65 years, a .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol. He told me he had last fired one in 1945 when he had qualified with one in the Army prior to being shipped out to go overseas to fight the Japanese. The old veteran told me he was on a ship heading for the Japan when the first bomb was dropped. The war ended before he got over there. Later when we went out to fire the qualification course I watched as he grinned with each shot. He was all smiles as he surveyed the big holes in his target when he was through. I was so awed I forgot to note his name. Have you ever left your “job” felling really good? I did that night.

Another story involving a .45 , a vet and a coincidence occurred when my high school ROTC commander attended my class. I did not immediately recognize him but he had a distinctive and uncommon last name. I knew it was him and identified myself as one of his former Battalion. We caught up on old times and current. Later when the class went out to shoot he told me he was firing his grand father’s .45 from World War II. This man had helped train me in drill and ceremony in high school and now I was training him. The world is full of weird coincidences. I had another great experience in a permit class when the elderly mother of a former student attended my class. Her son had taken my class earlier and he was insistent that she take her Permit to Carry class from me. This was

one of the nicest ladies I ever had the pleasure of meeting. She was all smiles and her demeanor just radiated warmth. She was very attentive during the lecture. Unfortunately she had severe arthritis in her hands. I knew she was going to have problems pulling the trigger on the double action revolver she had brought to qualify with. I had her try a small semiautomatic pistol I had. She went on to qualify with it and eventually bought one just like it. She later sent me a note thanking me for my help and adding some other comments that I tried to not let give me a “swelled head”. I became good friends with her son and see him occasionally when he comes back into town from his out of town job. Sadly she passed away last year.

eran. A quiet, trim, clean-cut younger man hung around after his permit class. He related that he was a former Marine sniper. Apparently my being a former SWAT sniper had struck a familiar chord with this former Marine sniper. He told me that his slight limp was caused by the steel rod in his leg. I listened mesmerized as he told me about his team being ambushed and him losing friends from the ambush and later from suicide. I stood transfixed as he told of his several surgeries, long recuperation and depression due to survivor’s guilt . What can you say to that? Thank you just doesn’t seem to cut it. We stay in contact. He had a son about a year ago. We had lunch awhile back. He said someone had asked him if he had seen “American Sniper”. I’m sure there are memorable experiences I’ve forgotten and I apologize to those people. I have another good story or two but I’m out of space. On days when I have people in class who I have to admonish to quit texting or who are not listening or otherwise rude I just try to remember the old vet, the young lady in the wheel chair, the lady with MS, a refugee from Cambodia, and the Sniper. Some days I really earn my pay. Some days I know the experience far outweighed the pay. Thanks to all my students through the years,

Good Riddance The world is down one piece of garbage now. Former New England Patriots “star” tight end Aaron Hernandez was found hanged in his jail cell a little after three in the morning. A coward way out for a coward, but good riddance.

Hernandez was serving a life sentence for the murder of Odin Lloyd, an acquaintance who was dating his fiancé’s sister. Lloyd’s body was found a mile from Hernandez’s estate in February of 2013 and the New England Patriot star was arrested and charged with his murder in June of that year. Most recently Hernandez was acquitted of the murders of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in 2012 only a week ago at a trial that had all the makings of a good “Law & Order” episode as pictures were posted in the wire services of Hernandez blowing kisses to his four-year-old daughter who was eight months old when he was incarcerated. There was some initial shock over Hernandez’s original arrest but soon an avalanche fell into the public of a long history of violence,

Before Hernandez was arrested On field Hernandez lived a and convicted for his part in the charmed life and those in football murder of Lloyd there was the doucircles from high school, college ble homicide indictment that he and the NFL until his conviction. In 2015 the Patriots tight end was indicted on witness intimidation involving the shooting. Bradley lost an eye in the shooting and refused to cooperate with police. He did file suit against Hernandez twice, the first dismissed for improper paperwork

Hernandez helped Meyer and the Gators win a National Title and looked the other way at his off field activities. Not long after that five shots were fired into a car with three occupants at a stoplight seriously injuring two of them. The third that was uninjured described the assailant who fit Hernandez’s description. He refused to talk to police and no charges were filed. filing and the second, attorneys for him filed for a postponement of the trial because it would be legally unfair to permit the lawsuit as they were already defending him for the murder of Lloyd. Ironically Hernandez died an innocent man. In Massachusetts since he had not exhausted all forms of appeal before his death despite serving a life term for first-degree murder, he was still technically innocent. Hernandez had a long history of violence dating back to his teens, which it was believed he was a gang member, although never officially confirmed. His tattoos and

mannerisms mirrored those of one – especially the violence. But time after time until that fateful night in 2013 law enforcement looked the other way. And it wasn’t until his arrest that revelations of his bad behavior and violence while at the University of Florida became exposed. Aaron Hernandez is a prime example of why I am no longer in love with the sport of football as I once was. As a kid I lived a breathed football. My father who played football aided this. One of my best memories of my dad is his teaching me how to throw a spiral in our back yard when I was two. Our weekends were spent together watching college football on Saturday afternoon with Keith Jackson and the NFL on Sundays. And then when I found out they even played a game on Monday night you would have thought I won the lottery. I lived and breathed the sport –

almost obsessively. I am still a big fan, but as I got into college it started to change. I noticed the behavior of the players not the same. As a kid football players were heroes and business leaders. Of course this was an era before social media when people led private lives when not in front of a camera or in a stadium. What little was known by some players I found out on the back of their trading card or an occasional biographical book that was sometimes available in grade school when we could buy books from some scholastic book company our teachers would hand out to us twice a semester to order recreational reading books. I bought every book about football and still have one in my bathroom to day about football stories of some historical NFL games. My favorite as a kid was “Griese/Csonka: Miami’s One-Two Punch” about the Dolphin’s quarterback and star running back and how they led the team to the famous undefeated

In college I noticed players getting away without going to class, getting free meals and getting away with petty crime and in one case a rape allegation. And it just wasn’t football it was basketball a well. I remember having class with one of the stars of our nationally ranked basketball team and he never took his headphones off in class. Our instructor had just handed back out our graded term papers and this guy turned around to me, pulled off his headphones and asked me what I got on the paper. I told him I got an “A”. He said he got a “C+” but would have gotten a higher grade if his tutor had handed in the paper on time.

lion dollar business beginning with youth leagues and of course the pro game. Before million dollar player contracts, billion dollar TV contracts, naming rights to stadiums and college sporting events sports like football, baseball, basketball, hockey – and so on and so forth were sports that followed particular seasons. In school youth sports schedules were based upon the calendar with football in the fall, basketball in the winter and baseball and track in the spring into the summer. Student athletes used to take part in all sports they felt compelled to play despite their ability – or lack thereof. Even the worst of the worst got a minute of playing tome or an at-bat.

And before I go off on football let me say it is still my favorite sport. I love the sport of football – not the business. And that’s the problem. Football is no longer a sport; it’s become a business – a megabillion dollar and soon to be a tril-

pating in not only a social or extracurricular activity you are getting a degree of exercise that was encouraged in schools until the last couple of decades. Anyone remember the President’s Council on Physical Fitness back in the day? To be a well-rounded individual schools not only provided education, they offered arts and physical fitness. But that is a bygone era as we live in an era of specialization.

That’s a lot of money for most who don’t even graduate college these days. And that’s the minimum. This for playing a game, a game a lot of children play but because the powers that be figured out how to monetize and monopolize it, it’s a biased business with all the fun of competition thrown out and replaced by bottom lines. Athletes used to become part of the community and towns they played in. Now it’s an old-fashioned statement to call someone a hometown hero. From high school, college and were they where drafted players became part of the community because they not only played there, they lived there. Once free agency began first in Major League Baseball in 1970 and late the NFL in 1993 players no longer became part of the town they played, instead they became hired hit men. Instead of being loyal to a team they went to work (or play) for whomever paid them the most. Loyalty and tradition were thrown out the window. When a player is now inducted into the Hall of Fame when they had played their career for one, maybe two for the last year or two of their career because of attrition, some have played for three or more teams and they must decide which team’s uniform, hat or logo they want emblazoned on their bust in the hall.

Even when I was still in grade school I soon saw fathers concentrate this son’s for one particular sport. I watched dads hang out at practices and “coach” from the sidelines. Instead of participating in each sport offered guys were soon playing only one sport year ‘round. tion the media has given them and its easy for them to say you should do this or that, no one is explaining the how and why and responsibility involved. People are now told to just look at the bottom line. It’s like math. The purpose of math is not just numbers it’s esoterically a lot more. It’s problem solving, problem solving that can be applied without the use of a calculator but real life experiences. In other world real world applications and more than just numbers. We have become a society that is enthralled with celebrity. People these days will do anything to become famous and in some cases infamous. That is the only explanation for the genre of reality TV, the influence of social media and how people use these tools to further an agenda or go down in history and infamy in an attempt to go viral. With Facebook Live alone and apps like Periscope people are using these tools to record themselves doing a number of activities including now suicide and murder. For the rich and famous many look the other way or make excuses to excuse their behavior. In the most recent NFL draft there are a number of players with domestic violence charges and sports writers while not condoning the behavior, the only things they say about it is that it will probably drop their draft position – not hold them accountable but will only hurt them short term financially. Sports are notorious for looking the other way. Current NFL players like Adrian Peterson missed an entire year involving child abuse, recently retired NFL quarterback Michael Vick was sent to a federal penitentiary for bankrolling a dogfighting ring and was welcomed back with relatively open arms by the league and fans. People were more upset over Colin Kaepernick for kneeling during the National Anthem than domestic violence charges. The only reason Ray Rice didn’t sign with another team had noting to do with the elevator tape

of him hitting his fiancé, but the fact he was at that age when most running backs begin to get shelved (late 20s/early 30s with rare exceptions like Peterson and Emmitt Smith). Greg Hardy’s domestic violence and weapons charges or his lack of remorse didn’t stop the Dallas Cowboys from signing him in 2015. Even Hall of Famers aren’t immune. We call know the infamous OJ Simpson murder trial, acquittal and aftermath. Let us not forget Hall of Fame quarterback was charged with domestic violence charges in 1996 for allegedly choking his wife. Many of these guys still have loyal fan bases that look the other way because they can play a sport that is really a child’s game. The NCAA and the NFL looked the other way on the bad person that Aaron Hernandez won. I have no respect for either anymore. Growing up as someone who loved the sport I still watch and am skeptical at the product on the field. It’s all about money and not sport or actually representing the town for which the team represents. And it’s ironic he played for the New England Patriots who despite their “dynasty” should be under a real investigation for all the many coincidences during Bill Belichick’s tenure as head coach. There are too many “gates” to list. Urban Meyer had all of Hernandez’s behavioral issues brushed under the rug and the Patriots used that behavior to draft him in a lower round than he should have. Ironically just before Hernandez was arrested for the murder of Lloyd he signed a $40 million extension. Not bad for lack of a better way to say it – a career criminal. The best news I’ve heard in a long time is Hernandez’s suicide. A coward way out. Finally a useless individual that got what he deserved. Good riddance.

Duran Duran - More Than Just Paper Gods

©Dave Weinthal

There’s another one I can cross off my bucket list. I finally got to see Duran Duran in concert – and I wasn’t disappointed after all this time. I have been an unabashed fan of Duran Duran since the first time I saw “Hungry Like the Wolf” on MTV (back when it stood for Music Television). I never saw them until the other night because when they were leading the second “British Invasion” and dubbed the “Fab Five” I was a poor college kid without dependable transportation to travel the many hours it would have taken to drive to the concert back in the day. I finally got to see the band that I loved and still do. Duran Duran had a great influence on me as a kid, not only the music, but also the fashion and imagery in their videos and even live concerts (watch “The Reflex” live video for example) as well. Those that know me today may be surprised to know that I grew up loving fashion. Fashion, music and movies – not in that order as they rotated amongst themselves from time to time were what I grew up loving. Of course back in the day all three intertwined until grunge hit in the early ‘90s. I loved Hollywood (old Hollywood and old movies), great

rock and roll and dance music and because my mother for whom they invented the word fashionista I always had a love for dressing nice – until I pledged a fraternity during my third year of college. Duran Duran, ABC and bands like that during the initial New Romantic movement in music in the early ‘80s combined all three. The only problem is that I looked nothing like Simon, Nick, John or Martin Fry. I was a fat or chubby kid, but I dressed as best the part without dressing inappropriately for my size (which ironically now is considered skinny by many). I even had the hair to go with it. I dressed in tailored suits, skinny ties, had my hair done at a salon – even went to theatre events to broaden my artistic boundaries (back in the day I wanted to be an actor).

clubs back in the day was a time to look your best. And as the ‘80s rolled in and music met fashion via MTV style merchants like Duran Duran, ABC, David Bowie, Adam

Ant, Human League, Roxy Music and Talk Talk were all over the radio and now MTV. No one personified what was great about early MTV more than Duran Duran. From the intro to “Hungry Like the Wolf” I was hooked. And unlike rocks stars like the Stones, the Kinks, Ramones and Billy Squier these guys didn’t look like your typical rock star. They had actual sartorial style. Add to that a dance beat and I was hooked. I ran to the Record Bar to buy Rio and wore out the cassette. (Yes, this was a time before the CD or mp3.) They reissued the first album that had now iconic classics like “Planet Earth” and “Girls on Film”. I bought most of the albums and even the side projects. I had cassettes of Power Station and Arcadia. I really liked Arcadia’s album So Red the Rose that featured Simon, Nick and Roger. I have always loved Simon LeBon’s voice and part of that reason was because it was distinctive and what to me he represented; and that was style and attraction by the opposite

As time moved on Duran Duran has rolled with the times. Not content on being a nostalgia act or totally reinventing themselves over and over again like Bowie, Duran Duran updated their sound without totally changing it. The drums, keyboards, bass and vocals are always easy to identify and seem right for the time. In the mid to late ‘80s they went to a more polished rock sound and by the mid ‘90s they were one of the first bands to embrace ‘90s dance with songs like “Electric Barbarella” (my personal favorite). The one consistent with Duran Duran is that they were native to the dance floor, and despite my inability to do so; I still love(d) that kind of music. That continues to this day as the EDM crowd has embraced the band, making appearances at Ultra Music Fest continues with their most current album Paper Gods. bers minus Andy Taylor. But four out of five was good for me. I knew I was in the right place when I arrived as I saw a number of attractive women wearing white leather pants, high heels as if I was witnessing a Duran Duran video cutaway shot. The amphitheatre was packed and then things went black and then almost blinding bright lights flashed as Simon, Nick, John, Roger and now Dom took their places kicking off the night with the title track of the newest release “Paper Gods”. to the fans briefly receiving a loud roar and then went into “Wild Boys”. The lights flashed, John and Dom danced across the stage as Simon turned his back to the audience and went towards the back of the stage. He turned, fist held high in the air as the crowd roared. The crowd was a mixed with both men and women equally represented. Like a lot of style icons or even James Bond, Duran Duran – at least to me were one of those bands women went crazy over and guys instead of being jealous or making

Andy Taylor’s place on lead guitar since 2006 looks very much the part and if you didn’t know who Andy was you wouldn’t have known he wasn’t an original member. fun of that, respected or to a degree wanted to be like the band. And with such infectious hooks, who wouldn’t. Next of course as “Hungry Like the Wolf”, the song that got it all started for the band and helped launch the second British Invasion.

A few things I noticed while at the show was some things do get better with age or seem almost timeless. Duran Duran exemplified stylish youth of the early ‘80s and onward when they first came around. 35 years later the band still looked great and without any obvious Throughout the night the band per- plastic surgery. LeBon always had formed songs from all eras of their existence with the exception of “Electric Barbarella” playing enough songs off of Paper Gods to promote without forgetting why people were there – songs like “Notorious” and “Come Undone”. One of the highlights of the night was “Planet Earth” that the band perfectly segued into “Space Oddity”, a tribute to David Bowie. LeBon’s vocals soared perfectly during “Oddity” and then the band gently returned to “Planet Earth”. The band finished their set with “Girls on Film” before coming out for a two-song encore. During the encore the band first played “Save a Prayer” that LeBon turned into an audience participation song. The charismatic lead singer then asked everyone to pull his or her smartphones out and turn on the “flashlight” app. The light went down and the night was lit up by literally thousands of lights in the audience. I’m guessing this has replaced the Bic lighter at concerts as a show of appreciation. The band then finished the night with a powerful, resounding version of “Rio” that very closely mirrored the original with the exception you knew it was actually being performed live. ENIGMA

It’s All Fun & Games with The Flaming Lips It’s been a while since I’ve seen the Flaming Lips, but I knew I was in the right place. As I walked from my car to the venue I saw two cars unloading in parking lot on the way. The folks getting out of the cars wore costumes, had uniquely colored hair and styles and well as carnival-esque hats to boot.

The floor was so crowded that security had to cut off the flow of traffic and you had to wait for someone to leave before another could enter because of fire code regulations one of the security staff informed me. I’ve seen a lot of shows here but this was only the second time I’ve seen it like this. The other time was when I saw A Perfect Circle back in 2010. Despite the

Despite having only one radio single in 34 years, the alternative hit “She Don’t Use Jelly”, the Flaming Lips in a strange way like the Grateful Dead during their heyday prove you don’t need radio to get and build a fan base and if you give the people what they want in a live show they will come. And boy did they.

Flaming Lips have few songs that one can sing along to. That’s not taking away from their music, which is psychedelic mood music with a twist of alternative thrown in. The songs they perform are to be listened to in their context and not sung along to. With their swirling sounds and leader Wayne Coyne as ringleader it’s not a concert you are attending, it’s performance art. Performance art that is addicting and fun to witness and participate. Isolating the music from the show (which I will do here in a minute), the music combines atmospheric rock, ambient sounds and ‘60s psychedelic rock that is best suited as background music. While it is actually pretty good on it’s own it does not deserved undivided attention like traditional songs. And while some people may find that offensive especially hardcore fans but most including myself are hard pressed to name more than one or two songs off the top of their head. But The Flaming Lips are no ordinary band; in fact they are more than a band. And that’s what I’m trying to get across meaning it as a compliment and not an insult.

Truth be told the Flaming Lips aren’t a great concert To appreciate The Flaming band. Before hardcore fans Lips you cannot judge them raise hell let me explain. The by their music alone. While ENIGMA

it’s pretty good and has a cult following there’s more to Wayne Coyne and company than hitting a few notes. A Flaming Lips show is an audiovisual event that includes lights, props, “toys”, balloons, interaction between Coyne and the crowd as well as complete audience participation. Having attended more than may fair share of frat parties, theme parties, Mardi Gras events and New Year’s Eve events there’s nothing quite like a Flaming Lips show as was once again evidenced on this evening. And unlike some of those other parties this show was something I could recount without being embarrassed or guilty. One thing I will say is I’m glad I wasn’t responsible for cleanup after the show.

THIS MONTH IN ROCK HISTORY 1955 Leonard Chess signs Chuck Berry to a recording contract after he came highly recommended by Muddy Waters. Most of Berry’s hit records would be recorded for Chess between 1955 and 1966, including “Maybellene”, “Roll Over Beethoven”, “School Day”, “Rock And Roll Music”, “Sweet Little Sixteen”, Johnny B. Authorities say the cancellation is because they discovered that “Rock and Roll dances might be featured” and justify their action by citing “a recent near riot at the New Haven Arena” where Rock ‘n’ Roll dances were held. Chuck Berry recorded “Maybellene”, which would become his first hit record, reaching #5 on the US Pop chart and #1 on the R&B chart.
