Dear Rocco, Why do so many people seem to stay in bad relationships? I’m not talking about physical abuse as much as I am emotional, which in my opinion can inflict in some cases more pain than physical pain. I see too many friends with someone they no longer love but don’t seem able or willing to leave despite their constant complaining and valid concerns? GK

A SWAT STORY FROM THE C.P.D. (Chattanooga Police Department) Years ago I was shopping at McKays’ Used Bookstore when it was near Lee Highway and Highway 153 in Chattanooga, TN. This was back in the days of “beepers” or pagers and my pager went off. It was a “484” or SWAT call. My pulse rate shot up as I got an adrenaline rush. The location of the call was very near my location. The problem was I was off duty and in my personal car. At the time I was employed by the Chattanooga Police Department. I was a Detective and was on the CPD Special Weapons and Tactics Team so I had an unmarked police car. If I went home to get my police car and my SWAT gear it would take me a half hour or more to get home and back. This was an active hostage situation. There was fleeting deliberation and I peeled out of McKays’ lot in my Corvette. I flew down Lee Highway and got close to what was then a “BP” station. I could see police cars on the lot and officers hunkered down for
cover near the police cars. I tried to assess the situation as best as I could as I parked my ‘Vette near the store. A police officer started
towards my car as if to tell me I couldn’t park there. It was an Academy classmate of mine, the late Steve Garrison, who recognized me and knew I was assigned to SWAT. He asked me what I needed and I replied “A gun and maybe a vest”. I only had a small off duty gun with me and no bul-

I threw the ble. vest on and took off around the I ran across the parking lot and found the ranking officer on scene, a sergeant. He seemed very relieved to see me. I knew he was thinking that now the responsibility for this scene was going to be mine as SWAT was in charge once we got there. We were huddled behind s police car near the edge of the building. I could clearly see a black male holding a pistol with a white female very close to him. The sergeant advised me that this subject had murdered his girlfriend in another state and had fled to Tennessee. He had carstore to try to gather as much jacked someone and been pursued information as I could. I think he was just worried about the 12 gauge. The day was starting to wane. The windows in the store were “fogging” up due to condensation caused by the air-conditioning and the hot, humid day. The decision was made to effect an entry. A ”flash-bang” distraction device (like a huge firecracker) would be deployed on one side of the building while the entry team rushed in the other side door. The offender had laid his gun down on the counter and was leaning out the door talking to negotiators when the distraction device was deployed. Unfortunately the door closed prior to it going off. This lessened the effects of the device. He had time to reach over the counter and grab his handgun. The entry team rapidly approached him ordering him to drop his weapon. He did not comply and pointed his gun at one of the entry team members. Suddenly there were several bursts of automatic weapons fire and the killer fell mortally wounded from numerous

It had been a long, hot, tiring and very stressful day. The negotiator had tried hard to effect a different outcome. In the end the criminal had brought about his own demise. The hostage had been rescued and no civilians or police officers had been injured. The police and SWAT had done their jobs. This story is dedicated to the memory of Charles “Charlie” Russell. Charlie was one of the members of the entry team who deployed that fateful day. Charlie was a great cop, Detective and one hell of a shot. Charlie, SWAT call sign Rooster , you will be missed.

according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. Sounds real stable. An Arkansas woman known as “Granny Hulk” broke a world record for deadlifting just three months shy of her 70th birthday. Sharie Mobley, who will be 70 in July, broke a world record for deadlift in her class and division when she hoisted 305 pounds. and the ‘delivery man’ had a brief conversation, and then the man shot her in the chest. She was able to close the door and call 911 as he ran away. Police say the attack was carried out by a hit man and was meant to kill her. Police have released video and photographs of the suspect hoping someone in the community can help identify him. Workers on an oil rig in the Gulf of Thailand said they rescued a dog found stranded in the water 136 miles from shore. The oil rig workers said they spotted the dog struggling in the water and called out to her, causing her to swim up to the equipment. The workers plucked the dog out of the water and sheltered her for two days until passage could be arranged on a vessel bound for Songkhla, Thailand. The dog was taken to a veterinarian. One of the oil rig workers said he hopes to adopt the dog if she isn’t claimed by her owner. The workers said they do not know whether the canine fell overboard from a boat. Residents of a Mississippi neighborhood are trying to get to the bottom of an unusual mystery — someone has been leaving mashed potatoes in various locations. Neighbors in the Belhaven area of Jackson said they been finding plates of mashed potatoes in locations including porches, mailboxes and on top of vehicles. “This neighborhood does a lot of quirky things, we decorate road signs we put Christmas trees in our potholes, so it’s not surprising at all, that’s why I love this neighborhood,

because they do so many strange things, but it’s definitely one of the weirdest things I’ve seen since living in Jackson,” resident Jordan Lewis, who found mashed potatoes on her car, told local news. Residents said they have yet to uncover the motive behind the apparent prank. “Some people were thinking maybe the mashed potatoes were poisoned to kill animals. I didn’t taste it, I have a 3-second rule, so I didn’t touch it but some people were worried,” said Sebastian Bjernegard, who found a plate of potatoes on his doorstep. Neighbors said they have not involved the police since the prank appears to be harmless. A Taiwan woman suffering from a swollen eye went to a hospital where doctors found four minuscule bees living under her eyelid. Hung Chiting, the head of the ophthalmology department at Taiwan’s Fooyin University Hospital, said he noticed what looked like insect legs under the woman’s left eyelid and used a microscope to discover she had sweat bees, also known as halictidae, living next to her eye. The woman, identified by the surname He, said she thinks the insects blew into her eye while visiting a relative’s grave. Sweat bees are known to nest near graves and fallen trees. Hung said the woman was found to be suffering from bacterial skin infection cellulitis and severe corneal erosion. Doctors said the insects were still alive and apparently survived by feeding on the woman’s tears.
It’s For the Best When was the last time you did something just for you? I’m not talking ‘bout normal everyday things either, like taking a shower. Although, if you have a newborn baby at home, showers are a huge challenge. I’m talking ‘bout legit spoiling yourself. Ya know, like getting away from all your responsibilities and letting your hair down for a bit.
of other people is actually easier than taking care of yourself? Seriously, look at your schedule right now. Tell me how many hours did you set aside to shuffle people all over town. How many hours to cook meals? How about homework hours? What about date nights? Now tell me how many hours are set aside for you. Whether that time looks like dinner or breakfast
For realz peeps, my all time favorite walkaway... My girlfriends and I rented a tiny house for the night. We went down the road to eat dinner at a fancy restaurant. Afterwards we ordered dessert to take home with us. We literally sat up all night laughing our asses off and talking about nothing. You remember those days when you could stay up all night, by choice.
Think about it. Have you noticed that once you hit a certain status in your life, whether it is a fulltime college student, full-time employee, parent, boss, or coach, then instantly your needs go to the bottom of the list. At first it isn’t overwhelming, you actually enjoy studying (Ok maybe just the parties), the work, the coaching, whatever it is. You love pouring yourself into something or someone bigger than you. Or at least, that’s the case, until somewhere along the way you get lost. As in your whole identity is wrapped up into someone else, or something else. This doesn’t even take years to happen. This problem can arise in as little as a few months. All of the sudden, you look in the mirror and you have no idea who you are looking at. That is scary as shit. But I am gonna let you in on a secret. First of all, you are the one who allowed your identity to be stolen. Second, you deserve to have some time for you. It is a necessity in life. In no way does that make you a selfish person. Lastly, you can walk away for a period of time and everything will still be OK when you come back. Maybe not perfect, but hey, what the hell is perfect anyways? Have you realized that taking care
those people and things will be gone. I don’t want you to wait until that happens to start finding yourself. You are only cheating yourself.. Let me leave you with this: You also deserve to have a life, because you were created for greatness. Quit holding yourself back; go explore this wonderful world we live in. Don’t worry about what other people think of your life. Song: Kacey Musgraves —-Mind your own Biscuits and Life will be Gravy

with friends, reading a book, or getting your hair and nails done? How many hours? Probably none. You get so consumed with making sure everyone else is good, that there is no time left over for you.
That was over a year ago and we are still talking and laughing about that weekend.
I promise, and I understand, that life gets in the way. I get that you have jobs, kids, spouses, and It took me many years to fully responsibilities. But one day, all of come to appreciate this quote: “You can not pour from an empty cup” Honestly, I still don’t feel like I have a great grasp on it. But it is a work in progress. When I walk away for a few hours, I come back with a new fire inside me - ready to conquer anything. I absolutely LOVE hooking up with my girlfriends and having dinner at least once a month. Scheduling this takes work, not gonna lie. But I make it a priority, because when we are done, my cup runneth over. ENIGMA

Bill, I Hardly Knew You and It’s My Fault Bill, it seems like I hardly knew you, but I’m okay with that. For over two decades I welcomed you at the dinner table with me and late at night before I went to bed as well. Former Channel 3 new anchor Bill Markham passed away recently at the age of 76.
(WTVC). One of the first things I was taught about the media market in Chattanooga while at UTC was that Chattanooga was a stepping stone market. You came through Chattanooga either on your way up or way down the ladder. It wasn’t considered a destination location. Bob changed that – and he was paid well eventually for his loyalty.
It has been ten years since he was anchoring the news along with Cindy Sexton and although I know he came to town in 1983, I was actually surprised he was that old. I used to hold media personalities in the highest regard until I got in the business; first as an intern at the old WDSI (now Fox 61) and then The Loafer beginning in 1990. Many a night I would stick my little transistor radio under my pillow to listen to music and hear radio personalities like Tommy Jett, The Night Stalker, David Carroll and more. When I wasn’t listening to radio I was watching the news. I used to love Mort Lloyd as a kid when we first moved to town. That love for local new kept growing with names and faces I can’t recall until about 1975 when Channel 9 hit the airwaves with Bob Johnson as news anchor,
Don Welch with weather and Daryl Patterson on sports. At one point Don left (he was the weatherman back then), but I
could always rely on the smooth voice of Bob Johnson to tell the news. I still remember sitting by the radio listening to Mocs football games when Patterson was the “Voice of the Mocs” at the time. He gave way eventually to Jim Reynolds who has been the voice for longer than I can remember and is still a joy to hear – and prefer listening to the games than even attending them in person because of him. When I became a Communications major at UTC I wanted to be like Bob Johnson (minus the pipe and jacket with the patches. What really impressed me was how long he at that time was with Channel 9

Another thing that stood out in my mind was something Professor Kit Rushing said in one of the many classes I had. Rushing was just a professor then and is now the head of the department. We had a love/hat relationship as he mercilessly picked me at times. And ironically a lot of my work at times was chosen best submission, which I think irked him at times. (We had little competitions at times in class) But one thing that really stuck in my mind besides the visit from New Free Press publisher Roy McDonald who addressed my class about the time he pulled all copies of Parade in the Sunday paper because of a quiz on sec, was when Dr. Rushing talked about the new anchor at Channel 3 (WRCB). “Look at him,” Rushing said. “He looks like he’s hungover with a 5 o’clock shadow. Look at that hair,” the professor said. (He did have a hair helmet – hair like former Cowboy’s coach and Fox Football analyst) He’s not anchor material.” After criticizing Markham’s appearance he said, “He’ll never last in this market.” To Dr. Rushing’s chagrin, he lasted 26 years in the Chattanooga market – always professional and always a credit to the community. He wasn’t a pretty boy,
who at that time was the trend, but he also stayed with one station the rest of his career. Both he and Bob Johnson where here for the long haul. Markam actually helped get Cindy Sexton into the market encouraging her to go for it and they were coanchors of the evening and late news until his retirement in 2009. I hate it when heroes fall and that’s what a lot of my early local radio and TV icons did as I became aware of what they did off the air first as an intern and then when I got into the publishing business. I could go on for days with stories I witnessed (some I even photographed) and many the scuttlebutts you hear from other people in media. That reality brought my initial
perception and idolization crashing down to earth. Eventually, I became cynical of local media and to this day only know or am friendly acquaintances with a very few. Most I ignore or avoid. Bill wasn’t one of those. I never met him in my life except once after he retired. I had taken my mother grocery shopping at Walmart and he was there shopping as well. My mother pointed him out and asked for confirmation. I said yes. That was the first time I ever saw Bill not in a coat and tie and instead a pair of jeans. He looked casual and happy and we went about our business. Since being in the media I have run into a lot of personalities at media events or parties and was quickly disillusioned by their
Before they were anchors together at WRCB TV 3, Bill Markham and Cindy Sexton were co-anchors in Alabama first. Their long professional history together is all in the industry shold be jealous and strive towards being more like.
behavior after the mic or camera were off. One that I got along with was the late Parker Smith. He never took himself or the media in Chattanooga seriously. The tortured soul that Smith was said one of the most profound and true things to me in 1996. Parker used to write and article for the Scenic City Gazette and then me when he wasn’t on talk radio back in the day. Notorious troublemaker that he was, one of his articles that he wrote for me took shots at various local media personalities with huge egos. He got threats as did I. As we sat in my office at the time talking accessing the damaged and if it really mattered about it he turned to me and said, “What makes them think they are some god? We’re in the 118th ranked media market in the country. (We’re now 88) How great can they really be? These clowns need to keep their ego in check.” And in all my years of being in the media, I never heard a bad thing ever said about Bill Markham. While I never made many friends in TV as I did in radio, I never heard anyone say anything disparaging about him. He was never in the rumor mill – or the Rumour’s Mill for that

matter. And that’s why I’ll miss him more than most other anchors (while I do think Greg Glover who inherited Bill’s old spot is great and a true professional). I actually learned a lot about him I didn’t know reading his obituary, which is saying something as in the past I’ve gotten anonymous calls, emails, and now social media messages and texts “to check this out” or if I could verify a rumor or wanting to know if I heard something. Maybe I was oblivious, I don’t know. Bill Markham to me seemed like a consummate professional in broadcasting and a good citizen – and those are too far and in between in any era. But thanks to guys like Bill, Bob, Cindy and David Carroll they made Chattanooga a destination location for media – way before the Tennessee Aquarium and whoever decided Chattanooga was now a cool town. There is a lot to be learned from Bill Markham – way beyond even broadcasting. And while I’m sorry I never officially met him, trust me I, like so many of us feel like we knew him and will miss him.

Reignwolf Music has literally taken Jordan Cook a long way from his home in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Literally a one-man band, he traveled to Seattle where everything fell into place, adopting the moniker Reignwolf eventually putting together a band. After playing around a little Reignwolf found them on tour with Black Sabbath and since have drawn large crowds wherever they go. After all this time together Reignwolf released their first album, Hear Me Out to rave reviews. Cook recently took a break from yet another tour to talk about making the band, Ozzy and more.
a pretty massive tour with Black Sabbath. Originally it was only 11 or 12 dates and after we did the Hollywood Bowl, they ended up taking us to Europe. All these things were happening. We were kind of recording in the background, but there was something
ing all these massive shows. I know on the business end it might not make sense, but for us, but it was so exciting. Look, we’re a brand new band and we’ll take a record when it feels right. And it turned out, we toured at the end of last year and crowds were showing

There’s a couple English guys I like working with – they’re both producers. Every time we get in a room it seems like something really special always happens. We get like “Over & Over” and “Wanna Don’t Wanna”. Those tunes started out in my friend’s garage. It’s just ridiculous. And the rest of it was me kind of coming up with a bunch of songs and taking them to the band and they just made it better.

I’ll tell you what: we tour crazy hard. For three and a half years we were basically touring like left/right and weren’t stopping. I remember we got a call to go out so upside down and backwards up, singing along with the music, with The Pixies. That led to doing about making a record while play- and I was like we could probably up this if we release this thing. So far it’s been incredible. It’s only been out for a few weeks and I’ve noticed everywhere we’re playing it’s a little bit more wild. Again, people singing back the lyrics. These were songs we weren’t even on the edge about, because they’re so new to us. We decided we weren’t going to record this time around like the things we played. We just wanted to do something fresh and new and give the fans something new. And we did it. It feels really good because it’s fresh and kind of keeps us really excited, I’d say – upside down and backwards again to release a record at this point - and something about ENIGMA

You know, I was going to say that’s the cool thing. I think we only played two of them live and every other one was brand new. That was kind of the exciting part. A few of these were like, “How are we going to do these live?” That’s what making a record actually is – figuring it out and it’s super cool to have that. If you embrace those and try things you never

You don’t do the same things live and it almost created a different energy within our band. I actually really enjoy the studio. There is no doubt we were a live band having that moment to try things and just experiment was really great. It brought us as a band really closer. Stacey-James Kardash, the bass player in the band; he recorded our original when we were going out on a few singles. He recorded all of those in his basement. So the fact that now he’s in the band and that all kind of happened – him recording out tunes. It was really cool.

And the phone calls I made: I met Mike D of the Beastie Boys who I met through a mutual friend and I was like, “You don’t have to tell me who mixed “Sabotage”; I want to work with that person. And that’s like many years ago. It ended up being Mario C and the Beastie Boys talk about him in their songs and stuff like that. It’s so cool. I kind of cold called him. I got his phone number and I called and said, “Look, I got your number” blah, blah blah, and he ended up mixing some of “Over & Over” and then Chad Blake who is obviously incredible he’s worked with everybody. About a week later I called and said do you want to come play, and he’s like, “Yeah, sure. Let’s do I”. He’s been in the band ever since. And ever since that it was like a natural progression within a couple of weeks of being in Seattle. The community there is so great. All the bands that I met while being there I have to say were behind – it was like a team almost. Everybody was behind each other, where a lot of cities that you go there’s the ego thing of like, “We’re going to be bigger than you” or some kind of vibe like that. And I
really felt like Seattle had this thing where there was a community where everybody was helping everybody and it helped us a lot because within a few weeks we were selling out shows. Coincidentally, the pair concentrated their solo tours around Floyd’s four ‘70s masterpieces – Dark Side, Animals, Wish You Were Here and The Wall – though Gilmour did touch beyond that with songs from the Barrett era when he toured. But not Nick Mason! He is shining a light solely on the extensive musical experimentation that the band’s ‘crazy diamond’, Syd Barrett, helped pioneer. And it’s about time. Tonight’s performance started off with “Interstellar Overdrive” from Pink Floyd’s 1967 debut album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn. It should be noted that the Saucerful of Secrets are a terrific band. They attacked the music with the same reckless abandon that originally created it. Only this time, the music was being explored by a fresh set of eyes and talent.
Mason’s purpose for emerging out of the shadows with this music had absolutely nothing to do with cashing in on the Pink Floyd name. This tour, I believe, is meant to expose fans to the group’s earlier works of extended instrumentals and thematic songs that led up to the creation of the epic Dark Side of the Moon and the recordings that followed.
Joining Mason on stage were Spandau Ballet guitarist and co-founder Gary Kemp, Blockheads guitarist Lee Harris, keyboardist Dom Beken and Guy Pratt on bass. The bassist is notable as the replacement for Roger Waters when Pink Floyd reemerged with a new album and tour 1987. Getting Deep wih Jackson Browne There are some concerts that you listen to music, while others it’s a party. Jackson Browne is definitely a listening crowd – or should be. The much-heralded singer/songwriter who wrote and recorded some of the songs many in the crowd grew up listening to (and who know, maybe party) recent stop in Chattanooga is one of those case studies. Performing to a packed house at the Tivoli Theatre Browne found himself at times competing with a talkative crowd, at one point stopping and telling someone near the front to literally shut up. I realize it may not be my place to lecture people on proper oncert etiquette, but after all these years and 47 years of Browne’s music, you would think some woul already know better. THIS MONTH IN ROCK HISTORY 11 995511 The number one record on America’s R&B chart was a song called “Rocket 88” by Jackie Brenston And His Delta Cats. Many Rock historians say that this was the first true Rock and Roll record. Although Brenston sang, played sax and is credited as composer, ‘His Delta Cats’ were actually Ike Turner And His Kings of Rhythm. 11995555 Police in Bridgeport, Connecticut cancel a dance at the Ritz ballroom featuring Fats Domino. Authorities say the cancellation is because they discovered that “Rock and Roll dances might be featured” and justify their action by citing “a recent near riot at the New Haven Arena” where Rock ‘n’ Roll dances were held. 11995577 “That’ll Be the Day” by Buddy Holly And The Crickets is released. The song would reach #1 in the UK and #3 in the US and was later ranked at #39 on Rolling Stone’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time. In 2005, the recording was placed in the National Recording Registry, a list of sound recordings that “are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States.” 11 995588 Bobby Darin’s “Splish Splash” was released. It was the first recording made on an eight track recorder at Atlantic Records and would eventually reach #3 in America and #18 in Great Britain. 11996600 Deejay Alan Freed is indicted along with seven others for accepting $30,650 in payola from six record companies. The Shirelles were presented with a Gold record for “Soldier Boy”, a song that was recorded in one take and originally intended as an album filler.
