Another One My reaction was immediate… as soon as the news reports started coming in last Friday. “Oh, lord. There’s been another one.” This time, it was 22year-old Elliot Rodger who was the shooter. This time, the spree killings took place in Isla Vista, California… near the campus of the University of California at Santa Barbara. Rodger shot and killed six innocent people before turning one of his three handguns on himself. It was later learned that he had stabbed his three roommates to death before going on his shooting rampage. In addition to the fatalities, 13 people were injured during by the lone shooter… …I’ve written about this before. A couple of times, actually. There will be more mass shootings in this country. It’s a sad fact. The immediate reactions are always the same. “Where? When? Who? How many?” Then, in the

hours and days after the event, the follow-up questions are always the same. “Were there any warning signs? Could this have been prevented?” In the case of Elliot Rodger, the answers to those last two questions are: definitely… and… perhaps… …Not long before his shooting spree, Rodger recorded an ominous video proclaiming his impending “retribution.” The self-described virgin, who claimed he had never even kissed a girl, blamed women for not “choosing” him and also resented the more popular and more attractive young men that the objects of his lust did choose. At several points during the video, Rodger’s sinister smile just reeked of impending doom. He also emailed multiple copies of a 140-page “manifesto” with further details on his twisted sense of entitlement. After reading it, his divorced parents forwarded it

It goes without saying that Elliot Rodger was a deeply disturbed young man. But there are lots of 22-yearold, entitled-acting virgins out there who don’t snap and start

…I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. We have to keep asking difficult questions or we’ll never learn what it takes to turn a frustrated, disturbed young man into a spree killer. The sad, silent horror of it is… that it’s just a matter of time until there’s… another one…

MONEY MANAGEMENT

WHY YOU SHOULD INVEST IN TESLA STOCK Some day in the future people will be asking their older relatives why they did not invest in Tesla Motors stock (TSLA). They will say that when you have a new car company that has the best all-around car (model S) for 2014 as chosen by Consumer Reports, that is all you need to know to invest in it. They built a better car than all the other companies that had been around for many more decades. Then you add to it that it is an electric car in a world that is trying to become more green since pollution is not good for anyone. But before I go on further, let us look at the 2 methods of buying stock. First Warren Buffet says that you should only buy stocks that you have no intention to sell unless something very strange happens. Investing in stocks has made him one of the richest people in the world. This method of buying stocks is called investing. The other method of buying stock is called trading. Some people love gambling and the feeling of winning and losing money. So

people like this will have more fun trading stocks. Some stocks will go up while other stocks go down. Now traders have bought stock in Microsoft and Amazon.com but it did not make them wealthy. They bought and sold the stock and maybe it made them some money or maybe it lost them some money.

not Tesla Motors. His full time job is working as a rocket scientist. He is CEO and CTO (Chief Technology Officer) for SpaceX. They have a $1.6 billion contract with NASA to do some things for them. So investing in Tesla stock is all about what they will be like years from now. So far they have sold many cars in the United States, Europe and China. They just started delivering cars in China and Elon Musk has been doing this in person. Also they (or actually SolarCity) has been building charging stations around the world where people can bring their car there and get a free charge. These stations get their electricity from the sun (solar cells).

So for people trading stock, Tesla stock may go up or down in the next few months. But this will focus on investing and where Tesla will be years from now. First look at the CEO, Elon Musk. Before Robert Downey Jr. did his acting as Tony Stark (Iron Man), he interviewed Elon Musk to see what a real genius billionaire is really like. After Musk created and sold PayPal he was a billionaire and was no longer concerned about money. There has been so much good news about Tesla that people So what was he concerned with? write negative articles about it He wanted to save the world. He for people who are tired of all decided that what we need to be the good news. Tesla has just got using is sustainable energy. He another manufacturing plant in became CEO of Tesla Motors and California and they have one in SolarCity that builds solar cells Europe. As far as future plans, on buildings. His full time job is they will be building a huge giga-

factory for making the batteries that they use in their cars. It will be powered by wind turbines and solar cells. Also they will be getting a manufacturing plant in China so they can make them there and save the Chinese an importing fee. In Norway gas costs about $12 a gallon so they prefer electric cars. They have built enough charging stations there already that 95% of the people there, live within 200 miles of a charging station. They are building charging stations in China. In 2015, they will be selling their model X that is like a big family model of their model S. Then their next step is to build a car that costs around $35,000 so that most people in the world can be driving that. Would you rather have a $35,000 car that pollutes the air and you have to buy gas for it or a car that does not pollute the air and you can charge it for free with electricity that comes from sunlight?

Hail to the Beothuks What's in a name? Shakespeare asked that question in "Romeo and Juliet" more than 400 years ago. His answer ("That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet") may have mollified folks in his own time, but it isn't adequate for most modern discussions on the subject. (I have long believed that George Carlin made an excellent point about a company's name needing to be appropriate for the product it makes. "If Janitor in a Drum made a douche," he pointed out, "no one would buy it" - and, I might add, with good reason.) Case in point would be the current debate over whether the Washington Redskins should change their team nickname. (I italicize the word current because this really isn't a new debate. I've heard it all before.) Incredibly, in an election year in which polls clearly indicate that Americans are focused on the economy and jobs, 50 senators signed a letter to team owner Daniel Snyder urging him to change the nickname. Really? Don't they have more important things to do - like passing legislation that encourages job creation and doesn't restrict it? Or maybe fig-

uring out a way to make the health care policies they are forcing all Americans to buy truly affordable and making sure Americans don't die while waiting for the care they need, like the veterans in Phoenix? Or coming up with plans that really do make America less dependent on foreign oil?

caribou population declined due to overhunting. That, in turn, led to a severe food shortage. Eventually, many of the Beothuks starved to death, but many also fell victim to diseases they acquired through exposure to the Europeans, and others were killed in violent conflicts with the Europeans - conflicts in which, no doubt, many of the Beothuks painted themselves with red war paint. I've heard some people argue that Redskins is an offensive word. Such an argument needs proof to support it. America, after all, is a land of laws, one of which is that proof is necessary to support an allegation. While it doesn't qualify as the kind of proof that could be offered in a courtroom, the only proof of whether the term offends native Americans seems to be available through surveys. Surveys aren't 100% reliable, I know, but, nevertheless, last year CBS conducted a survey of native Americans asking them if they were offended by Redskins; nine out of 10 were not. In the current debate, I suppose it would be a good idea to find out how the Beothuks feel about the Redskins nickname, but that isn't possible. The last known living member of the tribe died of tuberculosis almost 185 years ago.

What I and anyone else may think or even what those 50 senators may think - has no real bearing on it. As Ready? Good. Dear Rocco, There is this friend I have that I have feelings for. We’ve been friends for years but she has always had this one boyfriend – who is a mutual friends as well. I don’t want to look creepy by asking too soon but I don’t want to loose out if there is any chance for me to be with her. What do you think? TR

Dear Rocco, A female friend of mine who I dated for quite some time got married a little over a year ago. Despite the fact we were no longer dating we remained very close friends. I was even invited to her wedding and to everyone’s surprise I showed up. While my friends chide me that I still have feelings for her, to be completely honest I still do. She knows and has called me if she ever needed to talk to someone. The one thing the two of us have between each other is trust. Well, I was blindsided the other week when I was informed that she is now expecting her first child with her husband (of course). I don’t know what feelings I’m having inside and I need help dealing. I’m extremely happy for her and hope all the best, but part of me is jealous that it’s not my kid she’s carrying. My head has all these emotions swimming through my head. Help. BW

Dear Rocco, I am a 21-year-old college student who will be graduating in one year. I am white and I have a terrific boyfriend who would do anything for me. He is black. The problem is that my parents would disown me if they found out about him. We will be graduating college together this month and plan on moving west together. My parents have no idea I even have a boyfriend and my friends think I should tell them. I know that telling them it will completely destroy my relationship with my father and that my mother will be forced to side with him. Do you think I should continue living a lie and just move west supposedly by myself and keep my family relationship intact. My relationship to my family isn’t the best anyway. However, I will be living with them this summer. Instead should I be truthful and face the consequences. Help. KM

MONTROUGE, France (UPI) - A French father decided to put a new twist on some old classics in order to get rid of a group of people he suspected were selling drugs outside of his apartment building in Montrouge. French dad Joel turned to nightly doses of classical music from artists like Mozart and Beethoven to get rid of the men who were routinely smoking, drinking and allegedly dealing drugs near his home. It

started out with Joel singing himself. “I don’t know what came over me. I opened the window and I started shouting the Little ‘Green Mouse’ (Souris verte) or ‘My Little Rabbit’ (Mon petit lapin),” he told Le Parisien. “It was a peaceful solution to take back our property.” Realizing that his repertoire was somewhat limited, Joel began using recordings to keep the dealers away. “They asked me why I was doing it,” Joel said. “I told them their noise bothered me.” In addition to

Mozart and Beethoven, Joel also turned to pieces like “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky. Some of the dealers have fought back by playing rap music, but Joel was vowed that the classical program will go on. “I filed a complaint with the police. But I’m not going to stop,” he said. “Their behavior is unacceptable.” SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) - A California woman gave birth to a healthy five-pound, nine-ounce baby boy on Thursday, even

though she wasn’t able to welcome him into the world herself. Melissa Carleton has been in a coma for than 10 weeks, but she was still able to bring West Nathaniel Lande into the world via cesarean section at a San Francisco hospital. The 39-yearold has been in a semi-comatose state since she underwent emergency surgery to remove a large brain tumor. “I was just so happy to have a healthy baby, healthy

son,” Brian Lande, Carleton’s husband, told NBC News. “It’s a feeling of immense relief joy and immense sorrow for Melissa not able to be awake for it.” Now that the baby has been delivered, Carleton will be transferred to a brain rehab clinic and begin undergoing intense therapy in an effort to wake her. Carleton’s future is uncertain, but Lande is hopeful that she will recover and be able to meet West. “I want her to know she did an amazing job, and she loved the baby hard for two months,” he said. “I’m so grateful to her and I miss her. We can now work on getting her to wake up and get back to us and be a mom.” NEW YORK - It is tough finding a job right now, but this is ridiculous. A man stole a New York City bread truck and began delivering baked goods to random businesses. David Bastar hopped into the Grimaldi’s Home of Bread truck on Manhattan’s Upper East Side while the real driver was making a delivery at a pizzeria, according to police. Reportedly wearing only his underwear, Bastar then allegedly began dropping off baguettes, whole-wheat rolls and sourdough bread - but not to the bakery’s customers, said Joe Grimaldi, the owner of the baker. “The bread was left somewhere. Where I don’t know,” he said. “He

dropped a lot of bread.” Grimaldi said about $5,000 in bread was taken. The bakery later was able to accommodate all its customers. “It’s a bizarre incident but nothing happened to the truck. No one was hurt. There was no damage. I got my truck back,” said Grimaldi. Bastar, of Nanuet, was arrested later at LaGuardia Airport, where police say he wound up after tailgating a driver for several miles. The driver became concerned about being followed and called police, said Erica Dumas, a spokeswoman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport. Police determined that the truck had been stolen that morning. Bastar, who was taken to a hospital for evaluation, was charged with criminal possession of stolen goods and driving without a license. Grimaldi said a shuttle bus driver who witnessed the arrest called the bakery and said, “If you need a driver, I’ll work for you.” PRESTWICH, England (UPI) - A “cheating” husband in England is the target of a negative poster campaign that is being carried out by his wife. It serves him right if he’s left his wife like that, he shouldn’t just be allowed to get away with it,” said local resident Carla Moore. “I doubt he’ll be happy about it, but so what? It’s the perfect revenge.” PORTLAND, Ore. (UPI) - An Oregon woman’s car was attacked last week by a 30-yearold man who told police that he was battling “the evil Morgoth.” Morgoth is an evil character created by J.R.R. Tolkien who is featured in the “Lord of the Rings” books. Konrad Bass was allegedly high on LSD when he used a sword to attack a woman’s car and puncture it. He also had a staff on him at the time of the attack. Paramedics brought Bass to the hospital after the incident and he now faces charges of disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and menacing, KPTV reported. MURFREESBORO, TN - 49-year-old Lonnie Hutton was apprehended at The Boro Bar and Grill in Murfreesboro. According to police, an officer was dispatched to the bar, where a witness said that Hutton walked to the ATM and “pulled down his pants and underwear exposing his genitals and then attempted to have sexual intercourse with the ATM.” After his encounter with the ATM, Hutton began to walk around the bar nude, thrusting his hips in the air. Hutton was subsequently escorted from the bar and told to sit at a wooden picnic table. But once outside the bar, Hutton allegedly “again exposed himself again and engaged in sexual intercourse with the wooden picnic table.” To the surprise of no one police reported that Hutton smelled of booze, had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.

SPANKY BROWN

VERSATILITY AND STYLE BEST DESCRIBE THIS PERFORMER PROVIDING LAUGHS THAT TRANSCEND ALL BARRIERS: AGE, GENDER, URBAN OR MAINSTREAM, HIS HUMOR APPEALS TO ALL AUDIENCES. CURRENTLY A CONTRIBUTING WRITER FOR “THE TOM JOYNER MORNING SHOW” HEARD IN OVER 100 RADIO MARKETS.

JUNE 6 & 7

JERRY HARVEY AND FRIENDS HE BEGAN HIS CAREER IN COMEDY IN 2004 PERFORMING FOR LOCAL FIREFIGHTER AND EMS BENEFITS AND EVENTUALLY HIT THE STAGE IN CHATTANOOGAS NUMBER ONE PLACE FOR COMEDY "THE COMEDY CATCH."

JUNE 20, 21 & 27,28

JAMES GREGORY

JAMES DOES NOT “TIP-TOE” THROUGH LIFE AS IF HE’S WALKING ON BROKEN GLASS OR EGG SHELLS. THAT STYLE IS EVIDENT ON STAGE AS WELL. HE IS NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT. MUCH OF HIS HUMOR IS CENTERED ON BRILLIANT OBSERVATIONS OF CRAZY RELATIVES AND PEOPLE’S OBSESSIONS.

JULY 16 ONE SHOW ONLY!

MICK FOLEY

HE'S A THREE-TIME WWE CHAMPION, A HARDCORE LEGEND AND A MEMBER OF THE WWE HALL OF FAME. NOW, MICK FOLEY IS UNLEASHING THE SAME TRADEMARK BLEND OF WIT AND WISDOM, WILDNESS AND WARMTH THAT MADE HIS BOOKS SO BELOVED (FIVE SELF-PENNED NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERS) INTO HIS ONE-MAN SPOKEN-WORD STAGE SHOW, “TALES FROM WRESTLING PAST”.

1199 5555 “The Ballad of Davy Crockett” is the most popular song in the United States. Billboard reports that if the sales of all versions of the song were all added up, including the original by Fess Parker, more than 18 million copies have been bought in six months. 11 99 5566 Time magazine prints an article entitled Teener’s Hero, which tries to explain Elvis Presley’s mystique. After a drawn-out description of his singing style, the writer says of Presley’s appeal: “his movements suggest, in a word, sex.” Buddy Holly, sees the John Wayne movie The Searchers and gains some song writing inspiration when Wayne utters the line “That’ll be the day.” 1199 5577 “That’ll Be the Day” by Buddy Holly And The Crickets is released. The song would reach #1 in the UK and #3 in the US and was later ranked at #39 on Rolling Stone’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time. In 2005, the recording was placed in the National Recording Registry, a list of sound recordings that “are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States.”

The version released in America is one that had session drummer Andy White playing drums while Ringo played the tambourine. The British single was a take on which Ringo played the drums. An easy way to distinguish between the two versions is that White’s rendition features Starr on tambourine; Starr’s version does not include a tambourine.

1199 6666 Percy Sledge hit the top of the US charts with “When A Man Loves A Woman”, a song that he improvised with his band one night when he was upset over a failed romance. 11 9966 77 The Beatles masterpiece, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” was released. The album took over 700 hours to record under the direction of George Martin and cost $75,000 to produce. A then state-of-the-art four track recorder was used to build each song layer by layer. The LP spent 22 weeks at the top of the UK albums chart and 15 weeks at number one in the US. The iconic album cover, depicting the band posing in front of a collage of celebrities and historical figures, was designed by English pop artists Peter Blake and Jann Haworth based on a sketch by Paul McCartney. “Sgt. Pepper” has now sold over 30 million copies worldwide. Otis Redding’s backup band, The Bar-Kays, enter the US charts with “Soul Finger”, an instrumental that will peak at #3 R&B and #17 Pop. Six months later, four members of the band died in the plane crash that killed Redding.
