As I approach my 79th birthday, I see changes going on that concern me. Everyone, young and old have their nose stuck in an electronic device. Person-to-person face-toface conversation is dying. Young people can’t do a thing without it being electronic. I doubt if half of them know what a screwdriver is or can use one. Do they know how to change a fuse in their car or even their home? Now they are going to be dumbed down so much they are going to make cars that drive themselves. Young people need to get out from in front of those damn screens and go outside and do something. I’m not talking about organized sports, but something that requires imagination. Holy cow, Batman! Girls in the Boy Scouts—give me a break! There is a difference between men and women, God made it that way, quit trying to change everything there are some things better left alone for the best of Mankind - or do I have to say Womankind?

Dear Rocco, My girlfriend’s adult children are causing her issues. They still live at home and don’t help with her bills but throw plenty of shade at her. I get along fine with them since I only come over from time to time but I always have to hear her bitching about it. What should I do about this? DB
My neighbor who is a little weird home schools his kids. I’m not sure if I buy into all this home schooling that is going around. What do you think? BV

and begin to shift her body from side to side in excitement in a kind of “happy dance”. It was apparent to a dog person that she wanted to play. My girlfriend would move back and forth with Blackie following her body movements. Blackie seemed a little happier and have her tail was up now. She soon began to lick my girlfriends’ hand and arm as she fed her. Blackie became more and more trusting of me. She would now take food from my hand, let me pet her and give me the occasional lick on my hand or arm. She was definitely coming out of her shell. When Blackie first showed up my girlfriend was just so sorry for the undernourished skittish dog that she did not think of the consequences of feeding and socializing it. However, when I asked what she was going to name the dog she quickly told me she was not keeping it. She said her current number of two cats and a dog was just fine .I told her if we got the dog socialized and when her pups were weaned I would take the dog if necessary. We were certain at that point that Blackie as I was now calling her (my girlfriend was still trying out names like “Lady”, Molly and others was a stray dog. She was surviving off scraps and whatever small animals like moles and squirrels that she could catch. She had no collar. She would come when I whistled for her. I figured she now had a home. It’s like the old saying “once you name them you’re keeping them”. My girlfriend kept saying I was going to take “Blackie” home but it was readily apparent Blackie was becoming more comfortable right where she was. As a week or two went by Blackie learned to sit, shake with right and left paw and to bark for a treat. This learning to bark before being given a treat was helped by her watching the exam-
ple of Gizmo the Chihuahua barking when a treat was held up before him. Blackie was around more and more. Her body began filling out and her coat appeared shiny, which was helped by her being petted and her hair that was being shed was removed.
She carried herself with her tail up and had a more confident and happy air about her. Blackie began to hang out with us on the back porch. At first I would let her in the gate but she soon found a low spot where she could low-crawl under the fence to get into the backyard and onto the porch.
called her Blackie. Apparently that was judged as too common and eventually they started calling her “Bella” While I do think that is a pretty name I am still calling her Blackie. That is the name I came to know her as and which she has been answering to
So Blackie/Bella got rescued of sorts. She now has a place to sleep in the garage. She gets regular meals. She is socialized and appears very happy. She patrols the yard and barks at strange people and animals. She is a good guard dog and earns her keep. Man has had a symbiotic relationship with dogs for thousands of years. There is a good reason this continues. There is a lot to the saying that a dog is man’s best friend.
for weeks. My girlfriend keeps insisting I will be taking Blackie/Bella home. I will if I have to. However,
Blackie began welcoming me when I pulled into the driveway. She would be there wagging her tail when I opened the car door. It was evident that she felt at home and that she was no longer afraid. Eventually Blackie began to put both her paws on my girlfriend’s lap when my girlfriend was seated on the back porch. She would lean in and rest her elbows and chest on her lap. She looks very content when she does this. Recently my girlfriend’s daughter came to stay for a few days. The daughter and Blackie quickly bonded. It seems to me Blackie more readily trusts women. This reinforced my belief that Blackie had been abused by a male. The daughter asked what the dog’s name was. She was advised that I ENIGMA

when I see Blackie “dancing” around my girlfriend, doing tricks for her, Blackie resting on her “elbows” in my girlfriend’s lap and just laying contentedly on the back deck it is hard to think of removing her from that environment. It is too obvious that Blackie loves and adores my girlfriend.

Some people say there are too many guns in America, and it’s hard to argue the point when stray firearms are literally flying around the expressways. A driver who spotted a “black object” flying through the air on a Washington highway stopped 18 miles later and found a handgun embedded in his bumper. Washington State Patrol Trooper Guy Gill said the man was driving on Interstate 5 when he saw the object fly through the air and appear to strike his bumper. The man told troopers he didn’t think the object had struck his bumper very hard and no warning lights
came on, so he decided not to stop and investigate. Gill said the man stopped at a gas station about 18 miles later and discovered the handgun lodged barrel-first in his front bumper. He said it was one of the strangest things he’s seen in his 23 years on the job. Gill said the gun was turned over to Lakewood police. Investigators are looking into whether the weapon was used in a shooting at Harry Todd Park in Lakewood. A chimera? A prehistoric throwback? Possibly a rare species that hasn’t been scene since the Ice Age? Whatever it was, an extremely unusual, possibly unique wolflike creature was spotted in north-

central Montana near Denton and promptly murdered to death. Wildlife experts and rangers were unable to pinpoint exactly what it was. With long grayish fur, a large head and an extended snout, the animal shared many of the same characteristics as a wolf; but its ears were too large, it’s legs and body too short, and its fur uncharacteristic of that common to a wolf. It was possible to examine the animal so closely because it was deader than a doornail. “We have no idea what this was until we get a DNA report back,” said Bruce Auchly, information manager for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. “It was near a rancher’s place, it was shot, and our game wardens

went to investigate. The whole animal was sent to our lab in Bozeman. That’s the last I ever heard of it.” “That’s a grizzly cub,” one commentator wrote. “Under a year and starving from the look.” “Maybe a dire wolf,” wrote another, “because I don’t believe they are all gone.” “That could very well be what’s being called Dogman,” one poster suggested. “They’re spotted each day and the government quells any and all reports. Several people report being strong armed into keeping quiet about their reports by men wearing black suits. These are just facts. Look into it if you don’t believe it.”
Speculation roamed as far as identifying that animal as a cryptocanid species said to roam the forests of North America. Nonetheless, there remains an element of uncertainty about the creature, even among wildlife biologists. What is certain is how dead it is. While it is legal to shoot a wolf if it is preying on livestock on private property, the strange animal shot near Denton was not directly implicated in any livestock predation, but as FWP warden Zach Norris noted, the ranching family who shot it were well within their legal right to do so. “If you’re letting your dog run wild and it’s chasing livestock, the property owner has the right to shoot it,” said Ty Smucker, wolf management specialist. “Whether it’s a wolf or a dog chasing cows, or a dog that looks like a wolf; in Montana on private land, property owners and livestock producers have every right to shoot a wolf.” Police in Ohio said they thought a man who reported being followed by a pig was drunk, but it turned out he was “very sober” and indeed being stalked by swine. The North Ridgeville Police Department said that a man called 911 about 5:26
a.m. to report he was being followed by a pig while walking home from the train station. The statement said police thought the man was “drunk” and “hallucinating” his porcine pursuer, but officers arrived to find the man was “very sober” and had a pig hot on his trail. An officer was able to wrangle the pig into his patrol cruiser. “Also, we will mention the irony of the pig in a police car now so that anyone that thinks they’re funny is actually unoriginal and trying too hard,” the police said. The pig was taken to the city’s dog kennels and was later reunited with its owner.
When police examined the razor, it looked new and did not appear to have been mixed with other food from her sandwich. Officers checked with the hardware store near the restaurant who sold the same razors. While reviewing store surveillance videos, detectives saw Bradley grabbing a pack of razor blades from the shelf and leaving without paying for them. Furthermore, security videos from the restaurant proved that no one placed any contraband into Bradley’s sandwich. So far, Bradley was arrested for criminal mischief and theft.
A woman came up with a get rich quick scheme in order to make a lot of money from an insurance company. Correill Bradley, 29, of Louisiana went to the Mercy Regional Medical Center for treatment after suffering a cut to her mouth. Bradley claimed that she bit into a sandwich, which she bought from a fast food restaurant, and injured her mouth. She said that she found a razor blade in her food when she got home. She then filed an insurance claim with the restaurant’s insurance company and contacted a personal injury attorney about representation, police said.
A South Carolina family said a store’s bakery refused to print “Summa Cum Laude” on their son’s graduation cake, confusing the term for profanity. Cara Koscinski of Charleston said her son, Jacob, graduated summa cum laude (Latin: ‘with highest praise’) from a Christian-based home-schooling program and she wanted to celebrate the occasion with a cake from Publix food stores. Koscinski said she ordered the cake online and ran into an obstacle when the order form told her “Summa Cum Laude” was not acceptable due to the inclusion of profanity. The

mother said she used the “special instructions” part of the order form to explain what the term meant and included a link to a website that explained the Latin. Koscinski said her husband picked up the cake from the store and brought it to Jacob’s graduation party, where it was unveiled in front of his friends and family with the message “Summa ___ Laude” printed on the icing. “It was unbelievable. I ordered the special graduation edition cake. I can’t believe I’m the first one to ever write ‘Summa Cum Laude’ on a cake,” Koscinski said. Koscinski said she had to explain to party guests, including Jacob’s 70-yearold grandmother, why the store would omit the word “cum” from the cake. “My son was humiliated!” Koscinski wrote on Facebook. “I seriously couldn’t make this crap up!” Publix apologized to the family and offered to refund the price of the cake. “The cake experience was kind of frustrating and humiliating because I had to explain to my friends and family like what that meant. And they were giggling uncontrollably. At least my friends were,” Jacob Koscinski said.

coming across as though they have the moral high ground. If they actually wanted to make a difference, they might look into what they can do to make the world a better place and then to take action. This would allow them to give something to the world, as opposed to simply taking things from it. What this comes down to is that the best way to change the world is to create something new and not to just get worked up about how things are. It is easy to complain or to tear something down, yet it takes work to truly make a difference or to build something up. It is then as though these kinds of people are on the sidelines throwing stones at the people who are on the front line. If they were to get out of their chairs and to contribute something, they might no longer have enough time to be offended. They would have a focus, and this would stop them from getting caught up in the kinds of things that used to consume them. Deep down, they would know that they are playing their part of this earth and not just living like a parasite. Each one of us has a part to play on this earth; if that wasn’t the case, we wouldn’t be here. If someone doesn’t like something, they can waste their time by being offended or they can do something about it.

Oh, Johnny Boy Remembering John Johnson Radio got a little more unlisten- by Glen Frey, Scott Weiland, a lot of celebrities local and interable the other day. John “Thomas” Johnson passed suddenly at the age of 60. John – who had a number of “radio” names depending on the station format went by John Johnson, John Thomas, Tex Johnson, John Sinclair and the list, goes on. John was one of the few media personalities whose company I enjoyed and he unfortunately joins a list of growing radio and TV personalities in the Chattanooga area market that has passed in the last ten years or so.
struck when I’m around – even those who I’ve had to give a ride home or on one occasion give a job be it ever so briefly. John was one of those I considered a friend and kick myself for not keeping in touch with him better. The other week he posted he was looking for a new apartment even inquiring about sharing an apartment. I almost reached out at the point remembering during the Fox 102 days when we were hanging out on an almost regular basis when he asked me to share a place with him after his roommate moved out. I regretted not doing that as well. Even the week before he died he posted he had a job interview and wanted everyone to wish him luck. I did but that was the last I heard from him until I saw a social media posting about his death. I was bummed beyond words. And while my phrasing doesn’t match the emotion, that was the way John would have put it – “bummer” something I heard him say from time to time when we were gossiping or talking about anything from music to women and the state of radio in Chattanooga.
Being a late baby boomer I am becoming accustomed to this and a lot of us are in for a shock as those who were our idols – both local and worldwide start dropping. It really hit home starting with the death of Bowie, quickly followed Prince and Tom Petty. We expect nationally to die once they hit their eighties, but because the youngest of the baby boomer generation is in their early 50s now, 60 and even 70 don’t seem that old any longer. Of course when it comes to rock and roll we sort of expect a few early casualties like Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Amy Winehouse but when it comes to those golden voices that we welcome into our homes, cars and I remember first meeting John hearts it sometimes bites a little roughly 30 years ago at the old Fox harder. 102 whose offices were at Four Squares on Mountain Creek Road. John reminded me of another famous John – Dr. Johnny Fever on WKRP in Cincinnati except he didn’t have to deal with Les Nessman or Herb Tarlek. Granted, he had his own cast of crazies but nothing along that line. For a time we even took road trips to Atlanta. I remember he and I meeting blues artist Diane Durrett in Little Five Points for lunch and an interview and photo shoot. While on those trips I turned John on to 99x then a new alternative rock station that was sending waves around the country with their cutting edge play list and new music station. The Atlanta station broke many artists such as Silverchair, Marvelous 3, Shawn Mullins and more. While driving back and forth we both talked about that was a format Chattanooga needed. Chattanooga State’s 91 Rock was great but we needed a commercial radio station to play that format. I remember John arranged a meeting with the owner of WDOD (96.5 FM) a flailing country station at the time to sell him on the concept. I remember the look in John’s eye of disbelief after the meeting. The owner told John he’d rather have

What Price Utopia? Priceless Whenever I go to a concert these days and I’m the kid there you know it’s like I slipped into the twilight zone. And that’s how AI felt when I went to see Todd Rundgren’s Utopia. Todd Rundgren is a musical enigma. Everybody knows his name, however they can only name maybe two or three at best off the top of their head. And with his body of work he’s had only two top 20 hits and one top five. To the musical nerd he is famous for his work as a producer as well
as creative clashes with Cheap Trick, XTC, New York Dolls and Meatloaf to name a few. And then there was Utopia. Rundgren took early to music videos unlike some of his colleagues and contemporaries. one day actually stood for “music television” – something I repeatedly harp on I know). I wasn’t very familiar with Utopia at that point but I knew of Rundgren and when I started watching all these music videos two early videos caught my eye and still does. Early music videos were great. They were like watching home movies. They weren’t very slick and most were very creative unlike now where almost every video is some sort of “live” or performance video. Early

videos were like mini movies – the granddads of the webisode, so to speak. Bands like The Kinks, Bowie, ABC and the Go Gos had videos that made it hard to turn away. Utopia’s video for “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now” was one of those. The song by itself was infectious with it’s Beatlesque harmonies in contagious enough but seeing Rundgren and company dressed as centipedes just hammered home how fun music could be and anyone could sing along
and act silly without a care in the world or worrying about “hits” and “likes”. “Hammer In My Heart” was another song from that album (Utopia) that I watched over and over again. My limited knowledge of the band at the time (my only source at that time was the radio, MTV and some random clerk at the Record Bar) I really liked what I heard. It was poppy, it rocked mixing all the things I loved and still do – catchy guitar hooks and harmonies
the CD. Being a Cars fan from day one it was hard to fathom the band without Ric Ocasek involved and Ben Orr had died a few years earlier – but it did raise my curiosity. I’ve even seen Rundgren live a few times, but when I saw a listing for “Todd Rundgren’s Utopia” I had to check it out. As stated I did not know what to expect since a majority of my knowledge was from one album and a solid body of solo work. Boy was I in for an eye opener.
I bought the Utopia cassette at the Record Bar and remember driving all around every day listening to it – back and forth as I drove to school. Occasionally I switched it out with my Pretenders cassette and Eddie Money’s new one, but I eventually wore the tape out – one of the hazards of owning cassettes. Unlike today where everything is at
Once I got to the show I knew the fans were not your ordinary music fans. There were one or two guys dressed up in some kind of jesterlike or renaissance outfit. I knew Rundgren was a bit of eccentric musically but I didn’t know about the fans. It was a definitely older crowd. When I entered I was informed it was a seated show –

your fingertips, finding the Utopia cassette wasn’t easy. I had found that one on sale because no one else was buying it around here at the time. There was so much great music coming out at that time that I didn’t have time to dwell so I went on to the next thing even though songs from that album remain some of my all time favorite to this day. Living in the moment as I did and without a source to do further research on the band or desire because I loved new music at the time I went on. It might have been different if we had internet and YouTube back in the ‘80s. I’ve always kept abreast to Todd Rundgren’s products over the years because of his talent. something I’ve never done at a rock concert before. But I was dealing with a bunch of old people so I figured as much. The baby boomer age crowd that assembled reminded me of a bunch of middle age stoners who I hadn’t seen altogether at one time since that time I saw Steely Dan years ago at Chastain Park, which was surreal to me at that time. There was a definite buzz in the air as this was the first time Utopia had toured since the mid ‘80s. The show started complete with a trippy backdrop reminiscent of the band’s debut album art from the early ‘70s. The show was broke into two sets that represented two distinctive styles of the band. Kasim Sulton on bass and John “Willie” Wilcox on drums kept the rhythm section on track and added effortless harmonies to Rundgren’s spaceman vocals and guitar virtuosity. gressive rock and experimental styles. The evening started out with “Utopia” or what is referred to now as “Utopia Theme” from the eponymous titled, Todd Rundgren’s Utopia. The 14-plus minute aria allowed the musicians to showcase their individual talents. The one exception is the opening set was “Monument” off of the band’s last studio release, POV from 1985. Seeing Utopia live was unique in the fact it featured the core original lineup minus keyboard player Ralph Schuckett who had to step away from the tour due to serious health reasons but all indications are he’ll be back after this short two-month tour. Any time you get to see a band that has been around for as long as Utopia (over 40 years) it is special and rare if they have the original lineup intact. Another Live was represented well, a conceptual live album that featured two covers that the band performed for the crowd, “Do Ya” originally done by The Move and then ELO (written by Jeff Lynne) and Leonard Bernstein’s “Something’s Coming”.

After a nice opening set by Eliot Bronson Sweet took the set with his band to play 17 songs of pure power pop gold with an alt-rock edge. reared it’s ugly head. There is not a bad seat in the house – of course there is no room to sit in the house as literally the crowd is almost on top of the stage – a surprisingly nice stage for such a small room. This was never more evident than when those up front had to move to one side to allow the band the enter and exit the stage. The crowd that gathered for the show looked nothing like the regulars that patronize the establishment. It was definitely an older crowd, many who looked around in wonderment checking out the place. Sweet’s powerful voice filled the club, which is a contradiction to his soft-spoken voice as he spoke between songs to the crowd. One of the nice things about Sweet’s set and song selection is how seamless one led to another. The classic material fit well with the new as if the music was in a time warp. But of course power pop is a lot like that borrowing heavily from the genre’s roots.
