WHEN I WAS CRUEL The legendary Elvis Costello is touring the southland this week. The legendary singer, composer and even interview host with such classics like “Oliver’s Army” and “Veronica” willbe at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center on Thursday and at the Ryman Auditorium on Saturday.
AND THE WINNER IS... Kris Bryant of the Tennessee Smokies. Bryant easily won the Home Run Derby Monday at Engel Stadium as part of this year’s Southern League AllStar Game and ceremonies that took play Monday and Tuesday in Chattanooga. Too bad he didn;t connect in the game as the South Division defeated the North 6-4 at AT&T Field.

The Iraquagmire Continues And… suddenly… all is chaos in Iraq. Militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) are within 60 miles of Baghdad after a week-long offensive. In a strange turn of events, the U.S. and Iran held high-level talks to discuss ways to halt ISIS. The U.S. Navy moved the aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush to the region, but president Obama says he has ruled out the use of U.S. forces in Iraq. About 275 U.S. military members remain in the country after the withdrawal of most of our forces in late 2011… …Republicans have been quick to jump on Obama for “creating” ISIS, showing a grasp of revisionist history that is astounding. Some say the administration was too keen to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq, despite the fact that George W. Bush signed the orders. (Remember the press
conference where Dubya had to dodge a flying shoe? That’s when he made the announcement.) “Triggered” by faked evidence of “weapons of mass destruction” and myopically focused on eliminating Saddam Hussein, the Iraq war strategy paid little thought to post-war governing. The Shiite sectarianism of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has created conditions for Sunni extremists like ISIS to flourish…
…It’s important to remember that Iraq never really wanted to be a country. In 1919, British Army administrator/spy Gertrude Bell arbitrarily drew the borders of Jordan, Syria and Iraq in a manner convenient to the then-Empire. For centuries, Iraq has been home to Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds… and further divided by scores of tribal loyalties. that matter), you get the point. The U.S. broke Iraq, threw untold billions at a “democratic” government there and then watched helplessly as that government inspired sectarian resentment and violence… …There’s a lesson here… and it’s an expensive one. We, as a nation, need to a better job of holding our government in check. In the past, we have been too quick to jump into military conflicts where we don’t know the lay of the land or have the slightest grasp of who our friends (and enemies) are. Our attempts at “nationbuilding” keep failing dismally. Politicians love to talk about “sewing the seeds of freedom” around the world, but freedom needs more than a constant stream of manure to take root…

CHOOSING BUSINESS TAX ACCOUNTANTS FROM THE START No matter how large or small your business is, having business tax accountants dedicated to getting your financials in order is a key component of maintaining your business. Although each business typically has a different fiscal year end, tax-time for businesses is just as crazy as tax time for individuals. On the corporate side of things, tax deadlines are happening monthly, for millions of businesses across the country. While your fiscal year end may be in April, so are countless other's businesses. Long Live Tony Gwynn It is rarely that I write about A student of the game Gwynn Padres, a rarity in sports any baseball two weeks in a row epitomizes to me what all ath- more. He did his homework and without cause but I am compelled to after the news Monday. Tony Gwynn died at the age of 54. In my lifetime I have never witnessed a more pure hitter and diplomat for the sport of baseball and sports in general. Gwynn’s career average was .338 never hitting below .309 in a single season. The strike shortened 1994 season saw him batting .394 when the plug was pulled on the season with still two months to letes SHOULD be. He played his was always studying tapes of play. entire career in San Diego for the opposing pitchers, was kind of a quiet and gentle man who let his bat do the talking. What I really loved about Gwynn was his physique. He was an ever so slightly chubby guy with a sweet swing and a lot of speed. He looked a lot like us. He was not a body builder, performance enhancement junkie who looked like a cartoon character. He looked a lot like you and me. And for that I’ve always had a fondness and felt a bond to him even though he played for the hated Padres and long time foe for my Atlanta Braves. And when interviewed he spoke in a nasal rasp that almost made him sound kind of nerdy – not your typical egotistical jock. He indeed was one of us.
Over the years I cussed him plenty as he made mincemeat out of Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux and John Smoltz, but it was all in the heat of battle. I couldn’t help but admire his work ethic and Godgiven ability. He was never one about money, praise or ego gratification, he was about being the best hitter he could be. Another stereotypical site besides Gwynn’s sweet swing was a huge lump of chewing tobacco in his mouth, as a majority of ballplayers used to do. He succumbed to oral cancer Monday at the age of 54. He admitted his chewing tobacco probably had something to do with his oral cancer, yet being the class act he was he didn’t point fingers or blame, he accepted his fate and the consequences of his actions. Ten years ago I got to meet his son Tony, Jr. when he played for the Huntsville Stars, farm team for the Milwaukee Brewers. Like his dad he’s a class act but not quite the same hitter. Hopefully baseball will realize what a loss this is to not only the sport but the world in general. Men like Tony Gwynn are too few and far between. And because of who he was and what he was is why baseball is one of the greatest sports around.

JUNEAU, Alaska (UPI) - An Alaska mom thinks her 2-year-old daughter deserves a name thats as “Awesome” as her personality. Lisa Flores, of Juneau, Alaska, has asked a judge to change her daughter’s name from Viviana Contea Flores to Viviana Awesome Flores. Flores, 36, recently told the Juneau Empire that she got the idea from her 13-year-old son,
Dominic, who was 11 when he suggested that his unborn baby sister should have a creative middle name. “The big reason why I wanted to do this is because when I got pregnant, she was a surprise, and the father didn’t stay in the picture for very long,” Flores said. “My son was very supportive, and I thought it was a good opportunity to give her the name he chose and to recognize my son for all of the help he gave.” “‘My middle name is Awesome,’ that’s

what I want her to say,” Dominic said. “It’s just one of those childhood things, like I always wanted my name to be Awesome.” Dominic and his mother originally discussed the name Danger, but decided that “it’s so much to live up to,” Flores told Good Morning America. (“Danger” happens to be the middle name Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong gave his son Jakob. But when she chose the name “Contea,” her son was disappointed. “He

was pretty sad about it and I’ve been working to change it since,” Flores said. The Flores family has a hearing scheduled for July 7. QUANZHOU, China (UPI) Excuses, excuses, excuses... A Chinese man who got his penis stuck in an air-conditioning pipe waited two days before seeking medical attention because he was embarrassed.
Lian Tien told doctors that he slipped and got himself stuck in the pipe while painting in the nude in Quanzhou. The 61-yearold “did not think people would believe him” and only went to the hospital after he experienced swelling and developed a fever. “I thought that no-one would believe me and I tried everything I could think of to get the damned thing off once it got stuck,” Tien said, according to India Today. “I cut it from the wall and tried pouring oil and liquid soap down the sides but my manhood was so tightly wedged that nothing dripped down. I went to sleep thinking that if I relaxed it would slide off. But it didn’t. It began to get red and inflamed. I was worried that I would get a terrible infection.” Doctors were unable to treat Tien so they called in the fire brigade. It took firefighters four hours remove the pipe from around Tien’s genitals. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A Florida man was arrested on a prostitution charge after he allegedly offered to exchange some green for sex during a reverse prostitution sting by the Daytona Beach Police Department. The thing is, the only green that Alonzo Liverman had was a salad from Applebee’s. The 29-
year-old wasn’t the only one to get busted and the DBPD arrested nine other men, including former Florida State basketball player Tim Pickett. During an encounter with an undercover female officer, Liverman replied “I got a salad” after she said, “I’m hungry, you got food?” According to the arrest report, the officer offered to give Liverman a “blow job for a salad.” Liverman consented to the deal and asked, “You ready to go?” Liverman was sentenced to two days in jail and fined $500 after pleading no contest to the misdemeanor charge. BREMERTON, Wash. (UPI) - A Washington man may have to cancel some of his tee times after he was arrested for allegedly stealing $9,200 worth of clubs and other gear. The “golf addict” is accused of taking more than 50 clubs from the pro shop at Gold Mountain Golf Course. According to the Bremerton Police Department, the man tried to sell some of the stolen gear online, leading to his arrest. The 26-year-old’s apartment allegedly contained “golf paraphernalia, photos of himself playing golf and a hat reading “Born to Golf, Forced to Work” in addition to some of the stolen equipment. He was

booked into Kitsap County Jail for investigation of trafficking in stolen property and burglary. “Burglaries are often the result of addictions — drugs, alcohol or gambling,” Bremerton Police Chief Steve Strachan said in a press release. “I think this is the first one we have seen that looks like a golf addiction.” The unemployed suspect has played golf at Gold Mountain at least eight times in the past year. PERTH, Australia (UPI) Australian police arrested a man and charged him with drunk driving after he was found riding a motorized beer cooler while under the influence of alcohol. The 22-year-old was driving the cart down the middle of a quiet street in the suburbs on Friday night. The motorized cooler – known in Australia as an esky – did contain alcohol at the time. “This motor vehicle would only be able to travel at very low speeds, the lighting devices on said vehicle would be negligible and make it very difficult for other motorists to see,” police said in a statement, according to the Telegraph. Other Australians have been arrested for operating eskys while intoxicated in the past. A 38-year-old was arrested for drunk driving his motorized

SEATTLE, Wash. - “Wht r u wearing right now?” “A surgical smock & mask.” “Kinky! ;)” At least that is what I imagine is being texted back and forth between this doctor and his cyber lover during surgeries. The Washington state Medical Quality Assurance Commission says it has suspended the license of a Seattle anesthesiologist accused of frequently exchanging sexually explicit texts during surgeries. A statement issued by the state Health Department says Dr. Arthur K. Zilberstein is accused by the commission of compromising patient safety by his “preoccupation with sexual matters” while he was on hospital duty. In addition to the allegation of sexting during surgeries when he was the responsible anesthesiologist, the commission has accused Zilberstein of improperly accessing medical-record imaging for sexual gratification and having sexual encounters at his workplace.

Just Another Band Out of Boston And Forever In My Heart For a brief while I was transported back to the spring of 1977 riding my first skateboard. That’s one of the great memories that are forever imbedded in my mind when Boston took the stage at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Alpharetta, GA. That spring I learned a lot about love, friendship, how to skateboard and great music. I was befriended by a senior at school by the name of Pat Halstead. He was the coolest. He dated the prettiest girl at school, had cool clothes, cool hair and was a skateboarder, a
first for our school. Pat was kind of a rebel, though never a troublemaker. He was like a ‘70s version of the Fonz. He’s originally why I got into skateboarding. Despite our age difference (I was in junior high and he a senior) he took me under his wing and taught me how to skateboard. I bought my first skateboard at an Otasco or Western Auto that was downtown. It was a lot shorter than Pat’s but it was a pretty good board. Pat even admired it. Getting mad one day I threw ENIGMA

the board down and broke the tip off the board. Distraught I didn’t know what to do. Pat, who had admired the wheels and trucks on my board offered to trade my broken skateboard for a board he made himself. I would just have to buy my own trucks and wheels. I jumped at the chance, after all, Pat made it. After a week or two I was able to persuade my mother to give me the money to buy my own set of trucks and wheels.
small shop on Dodd’s Avenue called Peachtree Skateboards. I knew exactly what kind of wheels I wanted. I wanted Road Rider 4’s, which were the ones Pat had on his main board. Before I went I asked him what trucks I should get. He suggested Tracker and ACS amongst brands I can remember. Trucks, by the way are like the axel and suspension that connect the board to the wheels. It was a tricky decision back then. Road Riders came in 2’s, 4’s and 6’s.
