I have been getting meds filled at a local national drug chain. With my insurance my co-pay is $33. I noticed I was being given the generic brand – no big deal.

A friend recently had to go in the hospital for a couple of days. When he received his bill which the insurance company paid, he noticed he had been charged$8 for

I told him to to empty the generic product and fill my script with the name product. Just think of the millions and millions of dollars the drug chain made doing this. Yes, the product is chemically the same and does the same job but drug chains fill orders with a product that cost them much less and charge you the full price. You don’t get the full price break they do. Just another way the American public is getting ripped off by corporate America.

He asked and was told that the doctor was being paid for the visit as well. Since that doctor never did anything or askesd about the patient he thought it was strange he was there. When he received the bill, it was clear why he was there. The hospital charged my friend’s insurance company for the visit – a visit that included walking in the room, never saying a word and then leaving with the other doctor.

What Brexit Means? ...I haven’t been to England since my sophomore year in college. (I had a fantastic time, but that is neither here nor there.) But, as I briefly mentioned last week, I was born in Bedford and still have relatives there (mostly cousins... more on that later). Despite the fact that I haven’t been to the land of my birth in a very long time, my daughter is planning on a stop there during a European trip next summer. She recently discovered that she, like me, is a dual citizen. It has to do with the fact that the Brits have always considered me fully British. My daughter is a dual citizen because my year of birth occurred well before a change in citizenship requirements. She was tickled by this and was looking forward to the advantages of having a United Kingdom passport as she traveled across Europe

(The day Enigma plummeted last Friday, “goes to press.”) The implications for those traveling from the UK to its former European Union-mates (or vice versa) are unknown. Current speculation is that neither the UK nor the EU will require travel visas from the other. Both are hugely dependent on tourism and business travel back and forth. Passports will no doubt be required for anyone going from one to the other. The smooth sailing between the UK and the countries remaining in the EU is a thing of the past. referendum was 71.8%, with more than 30 million people voting. It was the highest turnout in a UK-wide vote since the 1992 general election. Voters were given two clear choices: “Leave” or “Remain.” How completely British. The referendum quickly gained the nickname, “Brexit” for “British Exit,” though numerous non-Brits thought some guy named Brexit was running for office... ...On the surface, the UK’s decision to Leave seems mired in fear, racism, xenophobia, and ignorance. Young voters felt betrayed by the older generation’s delusion of the longpast days of a formidable British Empire. The irony escaped almost no one. British colonialism ran rampant worldwide for centuries as the

Brits thrust their language and culture on those countries it subjugated. Yet it was fear of immigration that triggered the UK’s exit from the EU. As I mentioned above, I haven’t been back to Bedford since I was in college. So I asked my cousin, Lisa (whom I recently “friended” on Facebook), what she though the implications of “the vote” would be in her life... …”I haven’t got a clue,” Lisa typed back. “It’s all unknown territory at the moment. The Illinois lottery announced a man with the appropriate surname Gambles won the drawing for the second time — playing the exact same numbers. Larry Gambles, 65, of Matteson, won a $1,050,000 Lucky Day Lotto jackpot prize by matching all five numbers in the June 7 drawing. Gambles said his numbers, 0106-12-14-25, have proved lucky for him in the past — including a previous lotto drawing. “Nine years ago, I won $50,000 playing the numbers from the jerseys of my high school basketball team. I’ve been playing the same numbers ever since. I can’t believe they paid off again!”

tragedy involving a mass shooting, and I am not going to argue against some reasonable gun control reform, but no one can deny the Olympic level of hypocrisy here. The “Militarization of America” report found civilian agencies spent $1.48 billion on guns, ammunition, and military-style equipment between 2006 and 2014. So who is carrying all of these firearms? Well, for example, the Food and Drug Administration includes 183 armed special agents. Health and Human Services now has a special division of armed Inspector General Agents. The EPA spent $3.1 million on guns, ammo, and equipment, including

drones, night vision, camouflage and other deceptive equipment, and body armor. In case they catch anybody dumping used motor oil in a river, or something. Overall there are now over 200,000 non-military federal officers with arrest and firearm authority, carrying around military grade weapons and equipment, surpassing the 182,100 personnel who are actively serving in the U.S. Marines Corps. Your government is trying to tell you that you, the citizenry, cannot be trusted with certain types of firearms and certain amounts of ammunition, meanwhile fielding a literal army of bureaucrats and pencil-pushers armed with pump-action and semi-automatic shotguns, semi-automatic M&P15s, and H&K 416 rifles. Now don’t you feel safer?

Saturday. A spokesman said power was temporarily shut off to protect the workers. Michael Gersitz, owner of Party in Buffalo Bounce House Rentals, said the bounce house likely was not adequately anchored.

A Tesla owner in Kazakhstan showed off his car’s ability to traverse a flooded tunnel and the video caught the attention of CEO Elon Musk. Sanzhar Altayev posted a video to YouTube showing what happened when he drove his Tesla Model S through a flooded tunnel filled with stalled and stranded cars. Altayev’s car begins to float and is able to make it to the other side of the flood, where it drives away on dry land. “When Tesla enters flooded tunnel it starts to float! Any weather is grace with Tesla! Shame to skeptics!” Altayev wrote. The video caught the attention of Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk, who confirmed the car’s capabilities. “We *def* don’t recommended this, but Model S floats well enough to turn it into a boat for short periods of time. Thrust via wheel rotation,” Musk tweeted.

A mother wants $40 million from people who attended a party for failing to protect her drunk daughter. The New York mother is suing the owners of a house in the Hamptons and 100 unidentified guests because they did not realize that her daughter drowned in a pool. 29-years-old Olya Lipina died during an all night party. Her body was found only around noon the next day, floating in the pool. The death was ruled accidental. Now, her mother, Alla Lipina-Skyba from Brooklyn, has filed a civil lawsuit. However, she is not only suing the homeowners, Daniel and Linda Finer, and Laura Edith Kreft, but she is also suing the 100 party goers, claiming that they were negligent by allowing her daughter to get so drunk.

A bounce house took flight from a New York state family’s yard and soared on the wind until eventually colliding with some power lines. The rented bounce house was being used for a birthday party at a Niagara County home when a gust of wind carried the inflatable structure away while no children were inside, the residents said. A video captured by the family shows the bounce house flying high into the air. “Is everyone accounted for?” a woman’s voice asks in the video as the bounce house soars overhead. The bounce house can then be seen flying toward some power lines and a transmission tower. “It’s going to hit the power lines!” a man’s voice says. The man proves correct, and the bounce house strikes the power lines, setting off a flurry of sparks. The National Grid said workers removed the bounce house

From the inventor of screen doors on submarines, a Polish inventor came up with a way to take his roller blades “off road” by powering the wheels with an electric motor. The video shows inventor Jacek Skopinski testing out his self-propelled “off road” roller blades by taking them over surfaces including dirt lots, grassy fieldsand other rough terrain. The roller blades are powered by electric motors attached to the rear of the skates that are connected with a wire to a control Stopinski holds in his hand.

A woman was arrested on a charge of theft after allegedly stealing a man’s credit card while she was having sex with him in a car, according to police in Tennessee. Nashville police said that they have arrested 25-year-old Jonisia Morris, after being accused of stealing while having sex in a parked car outside the Clarion Hotel. Morris was charged with theft, fraudulent use of a credit card and indecent exposure. According to the police investigation, Morris was performing a sex act on the victim while sitting in the car. While performing the act, the Morris removed the victim’s wallet from his pants pocket that was around his ankles. She then took the credit card that she used at a gas station to buy fuel and other items. She then returned the victim’s wallet to the pants pocket. When questioned, Morris admitted to numerous credit card thefts. ENIGMA

FIDO AND THE DAWN PATROL:

Requiem for A Friend About ten years ago a stray dog wandered up my driveway. Little did I know this scrawny, dirty, funny looking canine would become my beloved friend. I was preparing to go on a motorcycle trip to Key West and just returned from a friend’s house. I pulled in the driveway and as I stopped the car I saw this rough looking dog “lumbering” up the driveway. I asked my girlfriend suspiciously (she had a habit of rescuing dogs) “Where’d that dog come from?” she said she didn’t know. Of course we put some food out for him and she put a blanket down by the garage for him. He ignored the blanket Luckily it was April and it was not much time to attend to our canine and slept on the concrete front very cool. I was very busy prepar- hobo. borhood with one of my dogs. This was the beginning of the “dawn patrol”. I told my girlfriend “Hey, Fido’s out there playing with Daisy.” She asked, “What did you call him? “ The name stuck. Well you know the old saying, “Once you name ‘em, you’re keeping ‘em.” That’s what happened. While I was on my trip I called my girlfriend and asked what she wanted to do with the new dog. Dumb question. When I got home the new dog ‘Fido” and I quickly bonded. He ate a lot and his weight jumped rapidly from thirty something to around a hundred. He was not overweight. He was just a big dog. The vet said

he was malnourished but like I said he quickly made up for that. We kept the dogs inside the house in crates when we weren’t home. I noticed Fido seemed very uncomfortable in his crate. The problem was the malnutrition had caused his knee joints and legs to not develop properly. He could not lie comfortably in the crate. I immediately decided no more crate for him. However, due to the lack of nutrition when he was young he always walked kind of bowlegged. When he ran it was in loping strides instead of fluid movements but it didn’t seem to bother him. When Fido was around two years old it was apparent he was having knee problems. He had surgeries on both knees at two different times. After one of the surgeries I could tell that his breathing was not right. He was breathing very shallowly. I tried to not panic as one of the vet assistants had the vet look at him. The Vet tried to act calm as after listening to his breathing she ordered him a shot and eventually he started breathing better. However, after we left there my girlfriend thought he stopped breathing and stopped at out regular vet’s office to have him checked. Eventually the “Big Galoot” as I affectionately called him was walking great after physical therapy. On that note it was hilarious watching that big dog doing hydrotherapy. It’s like he was walking/ dog paddling on a treadmill in a big aquarium happily splashing forward. Luckily for Fido he didn’t have to swim because I had found out he couldn’t. One day we decided to take ole Fido swimming. He waded in with me and when he got to a drop off he just sank. Thank god the water wasn’t very deep. I had to grab him and pull him back to the shallow water. Lesson learned. Fido had received some hard knocks, sadly literally, prior to coming to my house. His teeth were crooked, he had a big bump on his head which the vet thought was caused by some kind of blunt trauma and he looked slightly cross-eyed. We never knew if he got hit by a car or if someone had

abused him. Now just to look at Fido he appeared to be “not too bright”. However, he quickly learned that as there were several dogs in my “pack” if he wanted to get attention he would bring me or

guests a shoe. He would not chew the shoe or damage it (unless you count a little drool as damage) but bring it to you happily wagging his tail. When you tried to get the shoe he would quickly lower his head and move away as if to play keep away. This turned into a ritual game whenever I returned home. One day he was carrying a pair of my boots in his mouth! Sometimes he would sneak the shoe outside and later I would find my sometimes wet or cold shoe abandoned in the yard. What I sometimes considered a bother I now sorely miss.

biscuit.” However, this hapless jogger had his ear-buds in and was oblivious to me yelling “No Fido” and “He’s friendly!” as Fido rapidly approached from behind. When he saw this hundred- pound brindle

colored mass coming at him he set a new personal best for clearing my cul-de-sac. As he turned the corner I couldn’t help but burst out laughing. Another Fido event that I’ll never forget. Eventually I would name my group of dogs “The Dawn Patrol” because they reminded me of a World War I airplane formation. Every morning Blue, my three-legged dog would wake me up early to go out. Fido would of course go accompa-

Fido liked to do “puppy rides” (going for a car or particularly a jeep ride) where he could sit in the front seat and see out. I’ll always remember one morning when I pulled up to the window at a Hardee’s drive-thru a girl working the window yelled to her coworkers, “Come look at this dog!” He was a BIG dog. Fido made me laugh on so many occasions. One I particularly remember happened one day as I was sitting outside reading. I had Fido on a leash. Suddenly Fido leaped up and before I could grab the leash he was running after a passing jogger. Now Fido wouldn’t bite a person. If people asked if he would bite I’d reply, “He’ll bite a ENIGMA

I would frequently carry Buddy as he was not very good at staying in formation. Meanwhile Blue or back in the day Sally, and or Puck brought up the rear. It was apparent Fido greatly enjoyed these outings. Our morning walks became a relaxing morning routine especially after I had retired and was not so rushed. Just this spring on a peaceful morning I realized how much I enjoyed these walks with The Dawn Patrol. I didn’t know then it was all about to change. Fido had another medical problem last year (2015). I came home one night to find him having trouble breathing. He went outside and it quickly got worse. I rushed him to the emergency animal hospital. They sedated him and got him stabilized. I was very scared. The next day the vets told me he had a paralysis of the larynx and would probably require surgery but he was too overweight. Fido did not look overweight but the surgeon wanted me to get 20-30 pounds off of him. I had to put him on special food and greatly reduce his food intake. He lost weight. It was obvious he felt better. He now ran and

He had blood work and x-rays done. The vet, Dr. Yvonne Ward, (of whom I cannot say enough good things) warned me about what she thought the prognosis might be. I took him back the next day for an ultrasound. After the ultrasound she gave me the bad news. Fido had cancer and it had spread to his liver. She told me he only had a week to a month to live. I was devastated. I was in denial at first. Then I vowed to let Fido have as good a life as I could in the time we had. We spent a lot of time sitting out in the yard. That was one of his favorite things. I sat in my Adirondack chair and he laid on his Scooby-Doo afghan. Several nights we were out there until midnight approximately 4pm. with the peoor later. The Passing of A True Legend

The week started out on a heavy note. Pat Summitt, legendary women’s basketball coach at the University of Tennessee passed away at the age of 64.

fair-weather or bandwagon fans. You know who you are. You cheer for the team when they win but after only one loss you turn on the team, the coaches and so on and so forth. My first witnessing of this was when Bill Battle was the head coach of the football team.

I remember as a kid when our family moved from up north to the Tennessee valley. It was quite a culture shock for sure, but being the new kid in a new city/state I almost immediately began cheering for “my” hometown team in college sports the UT Vols. That ended quickly. At a young age I was turned off by the Vols. It had nothing initially to do with the teams but the fans. Still to this day I have never understood

“Back in the day” the Vols went to a bowl game every year – unlike today where everyone seems to go to a bowl and they seem to be running out of teams to put in all the bowl games now, it was a select few that went to a bowl game. During the Battle era the Vols never went to one of the “big” bowl games but they played in ones like the Liberty Bowl and

smaller ones like that. This didn’t sit well with boosters who thought “their” Vols should beat Bear Bryant and the like every season. I was put off when the news reported that moving trucks were sent to Battle’s house after the season. He didn’t order them an angry booster did.

towards men’s college athletics (trust me, I’m still a fan) the more and more I paid attention to Pat Summitt and the Lady Vols. She is one of the few people and the leader of a program that I can say nothing negative about. Pat Summitt was a class act and a winner.

And then there’s the hardcore fan who despite his or her team winning would cuss because “they sucked’ because they didn’t win by 30 points. I realize all sports teams have those kinds of fans but where I live I’m literally engulfed by them. And the irony of that is a lot of these hardcore fans not only did not attend UT, a lot did not even attend college.

I had my first encounter with Summitt in the late ‘90s as the Lady Vols were in the SEC basketball tournament I was covering. There was an aura around her. Everyone seemed to be mystified by her and she had this stern gaze as she coached. Despite the stern, ice cold gaze she was always very cordial to those around her and the press. This showed because you will never read anything negative about her or her teams.

As I got into college the intensity heated up as there was always that “little brother” feeling between Tennessee and other UT campuses like UTC and UT Dave Weinthal Martin. And the whole time no get more and more popular. And one was ever happy with the there are many reasons for that. football or basketball team – except one – the Lady Vols. Very old school and archaic by today’s standards I realize. We won, so I do have one thing in common with Summitt.

We all know her accomplishments and titles and how she actually for all intents and purposed created the lady’s basketball program.

Lady Vols basketball hasn’t been the same since she retired following the 2011 season. The Lady Vols have been the one UT team I have always cheered for – except when they played my alma mater. Hillary for President - She’s Got The Most Experience, She’ll Be The First Female President? “So, who are you voting for?” Is the question I’ve been asked most lately. Well, it’s hard to say, but I don’t believe much of what I see in the media or on the various candidate websites, on either side. I don’t trust career politicians, the system, or even if my vote will be counted (a voting machine hacked or some voter fraud event). Most voters agree - the game is rigged, the media is jacked, and politicians never do what they say anyway. Why vote? Yes, I know it is my civic duty, I vote, and agree to the majority rule, even though my candidate or proposition doesn’t win. I must, we all must agree in advance to that, and when we participate in all these shenanigans, that’s basically what we are agreeing to. What if I told you that philosophically speaking that; Our right to vote, it is trick? Okay, I won’t go that far, but let me help you out of your naïve brainwashed thought process for a minute. Listen to the Music Journey, The Doobie Brothers and Dave Mason Bring Back Old Memories

A lot of my formative years were spent listening to the radio either as an activity or passively as I did homework rode/drove in a car – you get the idea. Two bands that I remember most from my youth of turning the dial are the Doobie Brothers and Journey. I have a longer history with the Doobies. They were the cool band when I was still in elementary school. Just the name “doobie” was enough. Granted, we were still kind of young to grasp the slang from which the name came from and those that did in class were considered the “cool” kids and we pretended we knew but never participated (honestly). I remember trying to sing along to “Black Water” with my buds Robbie and Eric but didn’t do as good a job. The Doobies had a distinctive sound that was more rocking than a lot of

them the more I appreciate them more when I do hear one of their songs. Good memories.

After about three or four years of constant success and oversaturation the Doobies dissolved. Rock and roll went on and actually got more diversified. The Doobies did reform in 1987 with Johnston back at the helm and started touring a recording again. IN my opinion they were never the same. Time had passed them by. I had moved on. My moved Dave Weinthal them into my nostalgia folder. the stuff that was on the radio To be honest the less I listen to at the time like Elton John and Seals & Croft. For reference this was the beginning of the era know as “yacht rock” that we were stuck with until disco before punk and new wave saved us.

I had a love/hate relationship with Journey. I really loved their rocking songs but loathed their ballads. I’m not a soft guy. I also thought Steve Perry had a bad haircut as well – as if he were a member of Spinal Tap. I really hated Perry’s solo stuff especially “Oh Sherrie”. When I was in school I worked at a restaurant with two girls named Sherrie when the song came out and sure enough I literally heard suitors sing the

As I got into high school I remember a great change in sound as the band sounded smoother or more “jazzy”. A guy named Michael McDonald took over for original lead singer and band co-founder Tom Johnston. I’ve read their story and like I wrote earlier I even watched the documentary on the band finding Pineda on YouTube. This incarnation of Journey was special to watch for many reasons namely the return of original drummer Steve Smith to the fold. Listening to Pineda sing is truly amazing – at least to me. I have always been one of those who don’t like bands that lose their famous lead singer. What would the Stones be without Mick or IXS without Michael Hutchence. The latter tried with and it did not work well. Van Halen tried it but there are definitely two divided camps on that. The band of course was tight. With Smith back in the fold it was pretty much the lineup from 1980 and their so-called “glory days”. Pineda brings a youthful energy to the band that might have been otherwise missing. Purists will still bitch to a degree because Perry is no longer singing but the average fan will not be able to tell the difference. Neal Schon took center stage a number of times with his handy guitar work. Many generations grew up on his riffs and chords as he helped define the sound of the band. The set started song with

The Monkees Good Times Rhino I apprehensively slipped The Monkees’ new album Good Times into my CD player. You see, I have been a lifelong fan of the band. I still remember as a toddler my mother setting me in front of our Tv next to my teenage sister as the RV show came on. I was instantly hooked. I could sing along pretty much word for word with songs like “Stepping Stone”, “Daydream Believer” and Pleasant Valley Sunday” before I knew my ABCs and 123s. I was an unabashed fan even as critics started to pile on them calling them the “Prefab Four”. They fought back learning to play their instruments and toured, and eventually wrote their own songs even though they did not have the same impact as the songs that put them in the public eye.

that they are loved for whom they are (were) – four funny guys with different personalities who made a generation laugh and sang some of the most infectious pop music ever recorded. We didn’t care if they played their own instruments or wrote their own songs. Of course these are the same critics who call Elvis Presley the “King” even though he rarely wrote any of his songs or played on his albums and praised all the Motown acts who had a some of the best songwriters in music history. The Motown sound was engineered just like The Monkees except they had a choreographer for their stage show and were all vocal groups – not out and out musicians. There were a few like Marvin Gaye but not the Miracles, Supremes, Four Tops or Temptations. There was a little bit of a double standard. Of course a lot of that was jealousy over the fact The Monkees out sold the Beatles – which in a way they were parodying initially as “The Monkees” were like a serialized version of “A Hard Days Night”.

“Whatever’s Right” the only Boyce/Hart song on the album is one of the best as it truly harks back to the origins of The Monkees. Boyce and Hart wrote some if not most of my favorite songs of The Monkees and this fits great. The only drawback is the song is almost over before it begins as it clocks in at two minutes. “Our Own World” is written by Schlesinger who also produced the project and it showcases the songwriter’s ability to understand who the song was written for instead of having the artist adapt to the writer. This song is light, poppy and catchy, not to mention charismatic and perfectly compliments what The Monkees are. Infectious pop tunes fill the album like “She Makes Me Laugh” that is as close to a warm weather anthem and sing along you’re going to find. That being said Good Times is far from perfect. At times I thought I was listening to Mickey Dolenz and the Monkees as he monopolizes the singing on the album. I finally realized I actually missed the late Davy Jones whose ballads and pop songs perfectly balanced Dolenz’s pop and rock vocal stylings. The mix was off as well. On too many songs Dolenz’s vocals were too far forward in the mix and comes off as if he was singing karaoke instead of fronting the band.

THIS MONTH IN ROCK HISTORY 1955 A landmark in music history is established on July 9th, when Bill Haley’s “Rock Around The Clock” reaches number one on the Billboard chart. Many music historians will eventually acknowledge the song as a dividing line, separating Rock and Roll from everything that preceded it. 1956 Elvis Presley appeared on The Steve Allen Show where he wore a tuxedo and sang “Hound Dog” to a basset hound. Many Elvis fans thought it was a deliberate attempt to humiliate Elvis and ridicule Rock ‘n’ Roll music, but Allen insisted for years that he meant no disrespect and that Elvis was in on the gag from the beginning and thought it was hilarious. The King earned $5,000 for the performance and headed for the studio the next day to record the song for a single release.

Percy Sledge earned a Gold record for the hit single, “When a Man Loves A Woman”.
