Bye Bye World Cup The United States is out of the World Cup. How much do you want to bet so is this country’s infatuation with the sport? Anyone? It’s time for the posers and pretenders to go back into hiding for another four years. Let’s see where all the “real” soccer fans really are.

fact you can use your hands and the fact all players on each side are in every play (at least potentially). Football is the ultimate team sport. And best of all it’s American. I have no interest in being one with the world. The rest of the world
Nowhere to be found except for a few hardcore fans-those who watched the sport before the World Cup began - and for that matter more than just the past year or so. There aren’t many. Despite the push, American football is in no risk of being overtaken by soccer as the sport of choice for most of America.
There are many other reasons I love American football. Until recently it was a man’s sport. Granted there are female semi-pro leagues but no one takes them seriously do they? Unlike soccer football is never played with a mix of male and females. They are exclusive of each other. I don’t care how archaic it sounds. I enjoy the violence. There is nothing like physical confrontation at times. And no, we all can’t get along. I like sports where scoring actually takes place unlike soccer and some baseball games. I love the strategy involved and the fact football is all about moving forward. It’s the irresistible force versus the immovable object.

How do I know this? I actually speak from experience. You may find it hard to believe but I played varsity soccer for years. No club of a bunch of guys wanting to kick the ball around, but an organized competitive sanctioned team. I played from the time I was about six until I graduated high school. So I speak from experience. I hate soccer. And unlike most of the “fans” of the sport and their detractors I played. Oh yeah, in one of our many practices our coach had us practice that same play as in the episode of The Simpson’s I referenced. I played for one reason once I got into junior high and up – my private school did not have a football team. They couldn’t afford one. They have one now but that was only a pipedream when I was a kid. To be honest with you the school was close to folding many times my first year or two. Now it’s one of the bigger schools where I’m from. Our coach Mr. Stanton wanted to channel my energy into soccer, his sport of choice. He had seen me play football at recess and knew I had some athletic ability. I excelled quickly but was bored as quickly and I went from starter to second-string that first year. He used to get so frustrated with me. People were surprised to find out I was a gifted athlete. I was a chubby kid who could run, throw and jump. Once I got into high school I was back starting for my beloved team. Every chance I got though I would get involved with a pickup game of football.
and yellow cards I could accumulate. I was never a finesse player like a majority of soccer players were and still are. I had a strategy of my own. In soccer, much like basketball you’re not supposed to intentionally hit or run into your opponent. My secret was to attack the ball as the other team gingerly and with great finesse kicked and like in basketball, dribbled the ball downfield (with feet, not hands). I would run up to the guy with the ball, who was usually faster than me and would slide into him with the ball technically as my target. I was good at this. I not only got the ball most of the time, but the opponent’s ankle as they toppled over and hit the dirt. Nine out of ten times I was able to disguise my move and avoid a penalty. Not always though. I watched many soccer “studs” run, limp or whatever off the field with tears in their eyes. I remember one game we were playing McCallie. We actually did not have enough players but they let us field a team with only ten instead of 11 players. It was at McCallie and I remember my teammate Chris Thomas and I surveying the field. The game started innocent enough. We were the little small upstart private school and McCallie students didn’t think we had any business competing against them. I still remember a voice from their sidelines yelling, “Come on, you can beat those little faggots!” Faggots? I was pissed. I went on the warpath. I almost set a record that day for yellow cards – what soccer calls penalties. I hook slid into everyone on the team. I toppled over one McCallie prep after another. If the ball was airborne I would jump into the pack to hit it with my head, taking no prisoners.
The games were soooo boring at times. Mr. Stanton would take me out when he saw I wasn’t really getting involved with the action. He would yell at me to get my head into the game. I would then get mad and used my anger to terror- The same guy that called us faggots ize our opponent that Coach ran down the sideline yelling that I Stanton loved. was playing too rough. raised eyebrows in my life. I also remember chasing after the ball as it went towards the corner. I put on the afterburners and saved the ball. It was then I heard one of the parents from our team say, “Boy he can run fast for a fat kid.” I stopped briefly and turned and said, “Really?” in disbelief. I got no respect. The game ended in a time 2-2. We blew a 2-0 lead fueled in part by our anger of being belittled by the rich preps. The refs just called it a draw and sent us all packing home. I remember another game when Chris, who was my best friend in our senior year and I decided to have a competition to see how many yellow cards we could accumulate in the game. Chris played physical like me and took great pride in knocking guys over as well. He must have been a frustrated football player as well. For the record we received 20 yellow cards that game. Chris outdid me 128. I think we may have actually won that game or tied. Back then our school wasn’t the sports powerhouse it is now.
er soccer player to world-class in the drop of a hat. I really wasn’t that great, don’t let me fool you but I took my football skills which indeed were great and put them to use in soccer to help relieve my boredom with the sport to actually good results. I think that last year we won the first soccer games in school history. Prior to that season my school had never won a soccer game as odd as it may sound because of the school’s rich soccer history these days. Another thing about soccer that doesn’t make it seem like a real sport along with rugby the older, much uglier sibling of American football is the fact that soccer calls themselves “clubs” not teams. Really? There are bridge clubs, book clubs and other unmanly “clubs”. A true team is a great thing and implies greater camaraderie and more dedication. I’d much rather be a teammate than a club member. So that’s it for another four years for soccer in this country. We’ll see how long the “buzz” lasts. Probably until the next MMA fight on ESPN. Oh yeah, training camp starts later this month for the NFL. Now we’re talking.

THE LAND DEVELOPMENT TWOSTEP: WHY INVESTORS PROFIT Investors are drawn to land for residential development. But they might do better completing only part of the process, selling rezoned property to homebuilders. This is an exceptional time to develop raw land for residential and commercial use in the UK. With a growing population, a housing shortage reaching crisis proportions and recession-devalued land, all the key factors favour the investor-builder. But if it were so easy, why do not deep-pocket investors, builders or landowners simply cash in on such a fortuitous confluence of circumstances? The facts include that not all land is appropriately situated for residential development. Not all towns are amenable to change of use authorizations and economic growth. In many areas existing transport and other broad infrastructure cannot support new inhabitants. Not all homebuilders have the capital or stomach for carrying land through the process of acquisition, rezoning, construction and marketing. And not all investors wish to be involved in the same process. But there are land specialists who
can look at the full land-to-homes development process, even if their financial interests encompass only a portion of that. This is a relatively new approach and one that is gaining popularity among investors who look to land as an alternative investment to traditional and volatile market-traded securities. Real estate, after all, has built some of history's greatest fortunes, in the UK as well as in countries around the globe.

The point is that experienced investor groups and the homebuilders will be able to minimize the risks, identify variables and have the talent to circumvent such problems as they arise. Independence Daze We celebrate the anniversary of our independence two days late. The legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies actually occurred on July 2, 1776. That’s when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution declaring the United States independent from Great Britain. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia proposed the resolution in June, but it took a while for the founding fathers to vote on it. After voting for independence, Thomas Jefferson and his fellow members of a “Committee of Five” took two days to prepare a document to explain their decision to the public. The wording of the “Declaration of Independence” was finally approved on July 4, 1776…
…Two hundred and thirty-eight years later, most of us celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, cookouts and other gatherings.
a little time this past weekend wondering what those guys would think of the government that has mutated out of their Continental
sweetheart laws that benefited themselves and their cronies, but that has become the norm in modern times… …Frustration at “taxation without representation” was one of the tipping-point issues that sparked the American Revolution. You can flip that script today. Mega-corporations donate massive sums to political parties and candidates in exchange for favorable tax laws. Among companies listed on the S&P 500, almost one in nine paid an effective tax rate of zero percent — or even lower – in 2013. Representation without taxation, in other words…
And I think the founding fathers Congresses… would kind of dig that. But I spent …The FF’s would be baffled by today’s career politicians. The Continental Congressmen were an interesting mix of merchants, plantation owners, farmers, lawyers (of course) and other assorted professions. They served their fledgling nation admirably and went back to their real lives. Once today’s congresspersons and senators get elected, the power of the incumbency kicks in and they can get easily reelected. After numerous terms, they can transition into lobbying and cash in on their political contacts… …Speaking of money, the founding fathers would be horrified by the massive impact of the almighty dollar on our political system. Laws are written to benefit specific industries and corporations. Lawmakers are owned by the bigdollar donors who get them elected and reelected. I’m sure the Continental Congress passed a few ENIGMA

…The signers of the Declaration of Independence couldn’t have imagined the scope of our foreign policy. They were focused on battling the British and building a nation. Our current efforts at “nation building” consume an inordinate amount of our national resources for negligible gain. Our military is stretched thin while the brave men and women who serve in it are often deprived of the health care and other benefits they were promised… …I realize that it’s a huge leap in logic to try and imagine what our founding fathers would think of our current republic. They would view things like airplanes, automobiles, and computers as some kind of magic. But they were a feisty bunch with little tolerance for oppressive governing. I think they’d be inspired to launch a second American Revolution…

TACOMA, Wash. (UPI) - What’s wrong with a grown man liking stuffed animals? Maybe nothing — provided they are his. Washington police officers found a man crammed into a giant box of stuffed animals when they responded to a burglary alarm at a Tacoma thrift store. According to Pierce County Superior Court documents, officers responded to the St. Vincent De Paul thrift store and found Michael Howell hiding inside a box of stuffed animals in the yard
outside the store. The 29-year-old reportedly told officers that he had smoked meth and then jumped in the box after he got spooked by the burglar alarm. “I came here for clothes and food, bro,” Howell told police, KOMO reported. Howell was charged with burglary and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. some Indianapolis Metro Police Department officers. They were apparently concerned with the “unmarked police car” bumper sticker that was taped to the back window of her minivan and asked her to remove it. The 56-year-old complied with the request, but after speaking with some co-workers, decided to contact the American Civil Liberties Union. Kelly Eskew, an attorney with the ACLU of Indiana, described what allegedly happened with Konchinsky and the officers. “The officer asked her, ‘Is this your vehicle?’ and asked for her license and

registration,” Eskew told IndyStar.com. “And then he said, ‘With that bumper sticker, someone could think you’re impersonating a police officer.’” Konchinsky was late to work after the stop. “It’s a joke — it’s ironic,” Eskew said. “It’s like you or I wearing a Tshirt that says, ‘Undercover cop.’” The city doesn’t find the situation funny at all. “We take every lawsuit against the city extremely seriously,” said Indianapolis corporation counsel Samantha DeWester. The civil lawsuit claims that the two
officers violated Konchinsky’s First Amendment right to freedom of speech and it is seeking unspecified damages to make up for lost wages and legal costs. “Ms. Konchinsky has not put the bumper sticker back on her minivan but wishes to do so,” according to the suit.
LOS ANGELES, Cal. - You can blame it on Sir Mix-a-Lot if you want to, but plastic surgery is an obsession with many women who want bigger, better, lips, breasts and, in the case of this unfortunate victim, butts. Apryl Brown says an acquaintance was offering silicone butt injections at her house, at a cheaper price than a doctor’s office. However, the real cost would come later. “I was in pain, my butt was hard, and I was itching,” Brown said. It turned out to be a life-threatening staph infection. When doctors removed the silicone, they found it was bathroom caulk, the same stuff you can buy at Home Depot. And it wouldn’t be the first time a woman regretted taking caulk in her butt. Brown needed 27 surgeries, and she lost her hands and feet to the infection. At one point, she thought she was going to die. Apryl Brown has learned to walk and write using prosthetics. She says her goal is to educate others so they don’t make the same mistake as she did. “All I would ask them to do is, when they have that first thought, make sure they have a second thought about it and do a little research,” Brown said. “They won’t be blind-sided, and they won’t be

(UPI) - A groom got an unexpected surprise on Saturday while he was renewing his vows after a year of marriage during a ceremony in Joplin, Mo. Jared and Stephanie Lightle were restating their vows during a traditional wedding after he was deployed to Afghanistan a year ago. While he was putting a gift in the car, Lightle’s mother pointed out an uninvited guest who she had observed taking wedding gifts from a table in the lobby of the wedding hall. Lightle shouted, “Stop! Thief! Stop,” and gave chase while still wearing his tuxedo and leather shoes. The 28-year-old groom, his brother and father chased the man out of the hall and he was apprehended by police a few blocks away. When 31-year-old Rosario Caruso was caught, he still allegedly had gift cards and cash that were taken from the wedding. “If we hadn’t caught the guy, it would have ended an otherwise perfect celebration on a very bitter note,” the groom told the Joplin Globe. “But, since police caught him and it appears justice will be served. I guess we’re going to have a very unique wedding story to tell the rest of our lives.” Caruso has been charged with trespassing, larceny and resisting arrest. The soccer squad was pelted with toffees as they arrived at Incheon International Airport near Seoul after arriving home without a World Cup win in any of its three games in Brazil. According to the Guardian, “go eat a toffee” is an insult in South Korea which is comparable to “get lost” or “screw you.” (Good thing the phrase isn’t “go eat a bowling ball.”) “I am sorry that we weren’t able to return the love and support shown by our people during the World Cup,” South Korea Coach Hong Myunbg-bo told the Korea Herald. “It was due to my deficiency as a coach that we didn’t put up the desired results. But our players all have a bright future ahead and not everything was lost from this tournament.” The president of the Korea Football Association will be meeting with Myung-bo “within this week” to discuss the coach’s status. After two losses and one draw in the World Cup, Myung-bo is facing pressure to step down even though his contract extends through the Asian Cup tournament in January. “Firing the head coach based on poor results isn’t always the best course of action,” said an anonymous KFA official. “President Chung will sit down with coach Hong for some candid talks.”

Booker, 30, was arrested during a drug sting in Jacksonville, Florida. According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Booker was placed in the backseat of a cruiser. An officer observed about $300 in the suspect’s wallet. The officer then walked away. When the officer returned, the money was missing. Booker said an undercover officer took the money. Officers searched the vehicle but the money wasn’t found. Once at the jail, the arresting officer then looked at the footage from the camera in the cruiser. The video showed Booker spitting on his hands to lubricate his fingers and repeatedly putting his hands in the back of his pants. Officers then performed a strip search and found nothing. The suspect finally revealed his hiding spot when he found out the next step was a trip to the Emergency Room. The money was rolled up and wrapped in a rubber band inside his rectum. Due to the money being covered in what the Sheriff’s Office euphemistically called a biohazard, it was not counted and the funds could not be verified. OPENI NG T HIS WEEK Boyhood R The film tracks 6-year-old Mason over life’s most radically fluctuating decade, through a familiar whirl of family moves, family controversies, faltering marriages, re-marriages, new schools, first loves, lost loves, good times, scary times and a constantly unfolding mix of heartbreak and wonder. But the results are unpredictable, as one moment braids into the next, entwining into a deeply personal experience of the incidents that shape us as we grow up and the ever-changing nature of our lives. As the story begins, dreamy-eyed grade-schooler Mason faces upheaval: his devoted, struggling single mom Olivia has decided to move him and older sister Samantha to
Houston - just as their long-absent father Mason Sr. returns from Alaska to re-enter their world. Thus begins life’s non-stop flux. Yet through a tide of parents and stepparents, girls, teachers and bosses, dangers, yearnings and creative passions, Mason emerges to head down his own road. Dawn Of The Planet of The Apes A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

1199550 0 The US music show Your Hit Parade premiered on NBC-TV. The program, which featured vocalists covering the top hits of the week, had been on radio since 1935. It moved to CBS in 1958 but was canceled the following year, unable to cope with the rising popularity of Rock ‘n’ Roll. 11995511 Alan Freed debuts his Moondog Rock ‘n’ Roll House Party on WJW radio in Cleveland, where he plays mostly R&B tunes. The broadcast ran from 11:15 PM until 2 AM and enjoyed a loyal following by Freed’s fans who called themselves Moondoggers.
11995544 Two versions of “Sh-Boom” hit the US Top 10. The original version by a Black group called The Chords was at #9 and the cover version by a White group from Canada called The Crew Cuts was at #5. Producer Sam Phillips took an acetate of Elvis Presley singing “That’s All Right” to DJ Dewey Phillips at Memphis radio station WHBQ. After Dewey played the song on the air around 9:30 that evening, listeners flooded the phone lines requesting to hear the song again. New York radio station WINS announced the hiring of pioneer Rock disc jockey Alan Freed to be the host of their Rock ‘n’ Roll Party. As he did on his earlier Moondog’s Rock ‘n’ Roll House Party Show on WJW in Cleveland, Freed programmed records by Black R&B artists that many White teenagers had never heard before. Freed is often credited with popularizing the term “Rock and Roll”, although the phrase was first used in 1942 by Billboard magazine columnist Maurie Orodenker to describe upbeat recordings. 19-year-old Elvis Presley quit his day job as a truck driver for the Crown Electric Company and signed a recording contract with Sun Records. He also inked a one year, personal management deal with Scotty Moore, who would receive 10% of all earnings from Presley’s live appearances. 11995555 A landmark in music history is established when Bill Haley’s “Rock Around The Clock” reaches number one on the Billboard chart. Many music historians will eventually acknowledge the song as a dividing line, separating Rock and Roll
from everything that preceded it. Pat Boone releases his cover version of Fats Domino’s “Ain’t That A Shame”. Domino’s recording reached number ten in the US while Boone’s version went all the way to number one. 11 9955 66 After the June 30th trouble at Asbury Park, Bill Haley And His Comets are denied permission to play at the Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City. A city ordnance was passed that read: “Rock and roll music encouraged juvenile delinquency and inspired young females in lewd bathing suits to perform obscene dances on the city’s beaches.” 11995577 “Teddy Bear” became Elvis Presley’s eighth US number one hit in the past fifteen months. It would remain at the top of the Billboard Pop chart for seven weeks and even led the R&B and Country chart for a week. Alan Freed’s show The Big Beat debuts on ABC-TV with guests The Everly Brothers, Frankie Lymon, Buddy Knox and Connie Francis. The show was later canceled after an episode in which Frankie Lymon was seen dancing with a White girl, which reportedly offended the management of ABC’s local affiliates in the southern states. 11 9955 88 Hank Ballard records a self-penned tune called “The Twist” at Vee-Jay Records’ studios in Gary, Indiana. A re-recorded version released by King Records would make a modest splash on the R&B charts in 1959, but it would take Chubby Checker to make a giant hit out of it in 1960.
Johnny Cash signs with Columbia Records, where he will remain for the next 30 years. 11 996622 David Rose, known for his movie scores and string albums, had the number one song on the Billboard chart with “The Stripper”, a number he had written years before as a bit of comic relief for his orchestra. 11996633 Martha And The Vandellas release “Heatwave”, which will reach #4 on the Billboard Pop chart and #1 on the R&B chart by mid-August. The song became their first million-seller and eventually won the group their only Grammy nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.
Bobbie Gentry records “Ode to Billie Joe”, which will top the Billboard chart next August. Originally intended as the B-side of her first single, the song has now sold over 3 million copies worldwide.
11996644 Although the music world was being dominated by Rock and Roll, crooner Dean Martin’s version of a tune written in 1947, “Everybody Loves Somebody”, cracked the Billboard Top 40 on its way to number one. This would be Dino’s first Top 40 hit since 1958 and ultimately replaced “That’s Amore” as his signature song. The Supremes’ “Where Did Our Love Go?” is released and enters the Hot 100. It stays on the chart for 14 weeks and would become the group’s first number one hit next August. 11996655 The Dave Clark Five followed The Beatles onto the silver screen with a movie of their own called Catch Us If You Can. The film was renamed to Having a Wild Weekend for its US release and featured the group performing “Catch Us If You Can”, “Having a Wild Weekend” and “I Can’t Stand It”. The Rolling Stones classic rocker “Satisfaction” was number one in the US on both the Cashbox and Billboard charts. In 2004 Rolling Stone magazine placed “Satisfaction” in the number two spot on its list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and in 2006 it was added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry, despite its sexually suggestive lyrics. Wilson Pickett’s “In The Midnight Hour” is released, as is Sonny And Cher’s “I Got You Babe”. The Beach Boys record “Sloop John B”, a 1927 Folk song that featured rhythm guitarist Al Jardine on lead vocal. The record would climb to number three in May, 1966. 11996677 The Monkees began a 29 date tour with Jimi Hendrix as a support act. 11996688 The Yardbirds wrapped up their final US tour before splitting up. Guitarist Jimmy Page was determined to keep the act going, renaming a new line-up The New Yardbirds. Keith Moon of The Who is rumored to have said “...it’ll probably go over like a led zeppelin”, thus inspiring the final name change. The Nice was banned from Royal Albert Hall in London after stomping on and burning an American flag during a concert. Two years later, Keith Emerson, leader of the Nice, joined Greg Lake and Carl Palmer in Emerson, Lake and Palmer. 11996699 Former Rolling Stones’ guitarist Brian Jones is laid to rest at the Priory Road Cemetery in Prestbury, England. The other members of the band, except Mick Jagger, were in attendance. David Bowie’s single, “Space Oddity” is released to coincide with the first lunar landing by Apollo 11 on July 20th. The song would rise to #5 in the UK but would not become a hit in the US until it was rereleased in 1973 when it would reach #15.
The Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women” is released. The band started recording the tune as a Country song based on Hank Williams’ “Honky Tonk Blues”, but found that it made a better rocker. After being released just three weeks earlier, the futuristic ballad “In The Year 2525” was Billboard’s number one song. After getting a lot of requests to sing the song that they included in their live act, Denny Zager and Rick Evans had invested just $500 to press 1000 copies of the tune. After a Texas radio station added it their play list, RCA signed the duo, but the record would prove to be their only US chart entry. It did however stay at #1 in the US for 6 weeks, which was longer than any other song that year and earned it the distinction of #1 record of the year 1969. 11997700 Three Dog Night’s version of Randy Newman’s “Mama Told Me Not To Come” sat at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cashbox Best Sellers Chart. It was a song that took singer Cory Wells over two years to convince the rest of the band to record. It reached #3 in the UK. Janis Joplin debuted with her new group, the Full Tilt Boogie Band, before 4,000 people in Louisville, Kentucky. Less than three months later, she would be dead from a heroin overdose. 11997711 Three Dog Night’s “Liar” is released. It would become their sixth Billboard Top Ten song, topping out at #7. The New Seekers re-record a song they did as a commercial for Coca-Cola last year, re-naming it from “I’d Like To Buy The World A Coke” to “I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing”. The effort would reach #7 on the Billboard chart. 11997722 34-year-old Bill Withers had the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Lean On Me”, his second US Top Ten hit after “Ain’t No Sunshine” in September 1971. The song reached #18 in the UK. Just a couple of years earlier, Withers was making toilet seats for Boeing 747s.
Paul McCartney and Wings played their very first show when they appeared in the small French town of Chateauvillon. The band included Denny Laine, Denny Seiwell, Henry McCullough and Paul’s wife, Linda. It was McCartney’s first time on the road since The Beatles quit touring in 1966. Harry Nilsson’s album, “Son of Schmilsson” is released. It featured George Harrison under the name George Harrysong and Ringo Starr, listed as Richie Snare, on some of the tracks. 11997733 Paul McCartney releases “Live and Let Die”, the theme from the James Bond movie of the same name. It will reach #2 in the US and #9 in the UK. 11997755 After being married for only ten days, Cher petitioned for divorce from Greg
Allman. She would change her mind a few days later, but the pair eventually split for good in 1979. K.C. and The Sunshine Band make their US Pop chart debut with “Get Down Tonight”. It’s the first of four singles by the group to make it to Billboard’s number one spot. 11 997766 The Starland Vocal Band, the first act to be signed to John Denver’s new Windsong label, had the top tune on the Billboard chart with “Afternoon Delight”. The song reached #18 in the UK. After years of trying to find hit material, England Dan and John Ford Coley reach the Billboard Hot 100 with, “I’d Really Love To See You Tonight”. The single will rise to number two in North America and sell over two million copies. 11997777 “Undercover Angel” by Alan O’Day reached the top spot on the Billboard Pop chart. It was his only solo hit, but it was not the first visit to the top of the Pop music world. He wrote “Angie Baby”, a #1 hit for Helen Reddy and the #3 hit, “Rock And Roll Heaven” for The Righteous Brothers. “Undercover Angel” stalled at #43 in the UK. 11 997799 Minnie Riperton, who had scored a 1975 smash with a song called “Lovin’ You”, died of cancer at the age of 31. She had also been a member of Wonderlove, a backup group for Stevie Wonder. Chicago disc jockey Steve Dahl held the infamous Disco Demolition between games of a baseball doubleheader at Comiskey Park in Chicago. They finished the show with “Whole Lotta Love”. Bennie Mardones’ “Into The Night” enters the Billboard chart where it will reach #11. A re-recorded version of the same song would climb to #20 nine years later. Billy Joel had the best selling single in America with “It’s Still Rock And Roll To Me”, a number he wrote in the back of a car on the way to a recording session. The lyrics are sung from the prospective of a manager and an artist, arguing about remaining hip for the younger crowd vs. staying the course and letting the music speak for itself. The song would go on to be certified Platinum by the RIAA. 11998811 Hubert Johnson, a member of the Motown group The Contours, committed suicide in Detroit. Johnson was a cousin of Jackie Wilson, who introduced The Contours to Motown head Berry Gordy Jr. The group took their feverish dance tune

11998844 Bruce Springsteen’s “Born In The USA” went to #1 on the Billboard album chart for the first of a four week stay. On the strength of seven single releases, the LP would stay in the Top Ten for a remarkable 84 weeks. It eventually reached a 15 Times Platinum certification on April 19, 1995 and has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. 11998855 Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night is admitted to the psychiatric ward of a Los Angeles hospital because of drug-induced problems. He would eventually recover, but was denied re-admission to the band and would be forced to tour as a solo act. 11998899 CDs started outselling vinyl records for the first time. The dominance of CDs virtually wiped out the 45 RPM single format, as nothing ended up replacing them. The 3 1/2 inch CD single would die out after record companies refused to offer them at a reasonable price. 11999955 A jet carrying Rod Stewart makes an emergency landing after a mid-air collision with a bird. 22001100 A US judge drastically reduced a $675,000 US verdict against a Boston University graduate student charged with illegally downloading and sharing 30 songs. The student admitted in court to downloading songs between 1999 and 2007 and a jury assessed the damage award last July. The US District Court judge in Boston cut the damage award to $67,500, stating the original fine was “unconstitutionally excessive” and “wholly out-of-proportion.” 22001111 A pub in Dundee, Scotland called Lennon’s Bar was forced to change the name of the venue and remove all Beatles memorabilia after Yoko Ono threatened legal action for copyright infringement.
