DRINKING WITH THE JOCKS Before becoming a full-fledged punk band, Against Me! was an acoustic solo project spearheaded by Laura Jane Grace, who began playing shows as a 17-year-old in Gainesville, Florida. Starting in 1997, Grace performed as a solo act wherever anyone would have her, drawing much influence from early acoustic protest music. By 2001, she'd beefed up her sound with the help of a full band -- including guitarist James Bowman, drummer Warren Oakes, and bassist Andrew Seward -- but there would always be some anarchism and Billy Bragg in the group's raucous braggadocio. Agaist Me! performs Tuesday at Track 29 in Chattanooga.

Attempting to Address a ‘Crisis of ered his famous Confidence’ speech 35 years ago.

“I want to talk to you right now about a fundamental threat to American democracy. I do not mean our political and civil liberties. They will endure. And I do not refer to the outward strength of America, a nation that is at peace tonight everywhere in the world, with unmatched economic power and military might.

People sneered at Carter as if he were spinning his wheels in a muddy ditch. I really got the impression that summer that the voters were concluding that they had to make a change in the White House in 1980. The guy who was in there didn’t seem to get it. And, with Obama, it is hard not to see parallels when, as Lederman writes, “both parties have essentially written off prospects for any major legislation for the remainder of Obama’s presidency. Obama’s attempts to circumvent Congress to get things done have drawn rebukes from the Supreme Court and a threatened lawsuit from the House, casting a bright light on the state of Washington dysfunction.”

“The threat is nearly invisible in ordinary ways. It is a crisis of confidence.”

the country would turn things over to the Republicans in the next election - less than six years after Nixon’s resignation. Besides, the Republican frontrunner, Ronald Reagan, would be nearly 70 by the time of the next election. Democrats either assumed - or persuaded themselves - that they would survive the 1980 elections. Many, including Carter, did not. I’ve been observing American politics most of my life, and I don’t fully understand the ebbs and flows of presidential popularity. It is truly a bewildering (yet fascinating) dynamic, this relationship the American people have with their presidents.

Initially, Carter’s speech was a hit with the public. His message of austerity in energy consumption appeared to resonate at first, but public approval came crashing down within a few days after pundits sliced and diced it. Clearly, there was a backlash but was it genuine or had it been manufactured? Carter’s speech, of course, was given long before the internet, even before cable was present in most American homes. There were no all-news networks and relatively few radio stations that carried straight news, let alone programs hosted by left- or right-wing ideologues. Many of the things that shape and direct

the course of public opinion ‘80s - or, for that matter, the Americans of the 21st century. today did not exist in 1979. I didn’t pick up on it at the time, but many people who watched the speech seemed to feel Carter was blaming them for the energy crisis instead of trying to resolve the problem. I guess it didn’t help when Carter said things like “In a nation that was proud of hard work, strong families, close-knit communities and our faith in God, too many of us now tend to worship self-indulgence and consumption.” That does seem a bit preachy, huh? I mean, he might as well have said, “You’re greedy and self-centered.” In many ways, I guess that was true, in some ways I guess it still is, but it’s a truth that requires delicacy in the telling. When I was growing up, I heard people who were there tell of the spirit of generosity and sacrifice that permeated Americans in the 1930s and 1940s. Maybe that’s true, or maybe it was a case of folks remembering things the way they wanted to remember them and not the way they were; but if even a fraction of it was true, the Americans of that time were more generous than the Americans of the ‘70s and

Carter told people a harsh truth that many probably did not want to hear - that a way of life was at the heart of the problem - and Carter wasn’t as diplomatic as he fancied himself to be. “We’ve learned that piling up material goods cannot fill the emptiness of lives which have no confidence or purpose,” Carter said. It wasn’t really surprising that, when Carter wrote his presidential memoirs a few years later, he focused most of his attention on his foreign policy record in office. Other than the 14 monthsplus that he spent trying to get the hostages back from Iran, his foreign policy performance included triumphs like the Camp David Accords whereas his domestic influence was summed up in the public mind by the “malaise speech.” In the long run, it might not have been any better if people had remembered it as the “crisis of confidence.” Neither that nor “malaise” is a rousing endorsement of a president’s stewardship.

STUDENT LOAN DEBT HOW TO GET OUT OF STUDENT LOANS QUICKLY Congratulations on your recent graduation! It's a great feeling to have accomplished a goal like graduating from college. Adulation and a great party follow the cap and gown ceremony. Then, within six (6) months you start getting notices in the mail. Your loans become due. Maybe you haven't even had a chance to get that dream job, or any job with this present economy. Whether you're working or not, there are a few things you can do immediately that can help you stay in control or even get out of student loans quickly.

slight interest rate reduction. If you cannot afford the Standard repayment on your federal loans there are other options for repayment. You can explore an extended repayment; graduated repayment; or extended graduated repayment. There are also income sensitive programs like Income Contingent; Income Based; or Pay-As-You-Earn programs. However, you don't automatically qualify for any of the available programs and that is where it gets confusing. Also, your loan servicer doesn't necessarily want you to know about these programs. In fact, their low level representatives may not even be aware of your options. Vist Student Loan Borrower Assistance (dot) org for more information on the available programs.

First, you must understand and know whether you have federal loans or private loans. How can you tell. A visit to the National Student Loan Data System will give you a list of federal loans only. If you don't see the loan listed there, Some federal loans can be forgiven or even discharged without filing then it's a private loan. bankruptcy. graduation and the school falsely certified you for entry, your loans may be forgiven. Unpaid refunds and closed schools qualify some for forgiveness of their loans. Student loans can be discharged through bankruptcy, but they must meet an undue hardship test first. It's a 3-part test that requires a present undue hardship, a continuing undue hardship, and a look back at what you have done to increase income and reduce expenses and the effort put into repayment of the loans. Third, address private student loans only after you have your federal loans on an affordeable repayment plan. The reason being is that the federal government can collect on its loans forever. Private student loans generally have a four (4) year statute of limitations (California Law) on their ability to take legal action to collect the loan. Unfortunately, private student loans provide no safe harbour or alternative repayment options like federal loans. However, you

Dear Rocco, I recently broke a personal cardinal rule. I vowed never to watch the movie “Titantic” because Leonard DiCaprio stars in the film and I think he’s a wuss (although I did like “Catch Me If you Can” – but it also starred Tom Hanks and Christopher Walken). I was invited over to this hot chick’s house and she insisted we watch the movie together. Figuring I might have a chance of closing the deal, I gave in. Needless to say, after the movie the water wasn’t the only thing cold or blue for that matter. Am I less of a man for watching “Titantic”?

PORTLAND, Ore. (UPI) - An Oregon man didn’t look a police horse in the mouth; he karatekicked it in the thigh. Portland Police arrested Joseph Cruz and charged him with interfering with a law-enforcement animal after he allegedly attacked a police horse named Olin. Mounted Patrol Unit officers were patrolling near a Greyhound bus terminal when

they stopped to speak to a group of people. While they were chatting, the 29-year-old allegedly ran up and attacked Olin, even though the animal outweighs him by about 1,000 pounds. Police say Cruz “yelled out a battle cry” and hit the horse “with a jumping, double kick to his right thigh,” the Salem News reported. Neither Olin nor Cruz was hurt by the kick and it was unclear if the suspect was impaired by drugs or alcohol during the incident.

Cruz also had a warrant out for his arrest. SANTA FE, N.M. (UPI) — A New Mexico man claims a Santa Fe police officer pulled a rifle on him during a really crappy case of mistaken identity. Artist Mateo Romero was cleaning dog poop out of the back of his SUV in a stranger’s driveway and the homeowner got spooked. Maria Markus, 60, called police and reported a burglary in progress after blocking Romero in with

her vehicle. “I tried to talk to her to explain that I was cleaning up dog poop,” Romero told the Albuquerque Journal. “But she got all hysterical and I just backed away. I couldn’t leave. It was crazy.” According to a police report, the responding officer pulled out a rifle and detained Romero. After he was searched and it was determined that Romero didn’t have any of Markus’ property, he was

released. “It appeared to be a misunderstanding,” the police report said. “Mr. Romero was understanding and polite.” “It’s kind of embarrassing, but that’s what happened,” Romero told the Santa Fe New Mexican. Romero’s paintings have been exhibited in Canada and throughout the United States. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -In a small bit of good news for the public education sector, a sexy female middle-school teacher in Florida was NOT having sex with her students. She was, however, showing them how to twerk during a party. A student reported that the soccer coach and gym teacher had attended an end-of-year soccer gathering at a student’s home and was twerking with students. Perhaps as a way of measuring how well they absorbed the material she was teaching them, she also allegedly let one of the eighthgraders give her a lap dance. Call it vocational training. The investigation of the allegations includes cell-phone video of the teacher getting the lap dance, which was described as “a gross exercise of poor judgment.” Or “totally awesome” depending on which source you ask. To cap off the afternoon of questionable judgment calls, the teacher

then drove home drunk with a classmate in the car, according to other students at the party. She was suspended for 15 days without pay. The superintendent says the educator was not fired because the student’s parents were home at the time. Which isn’t creepy at all. WABASSO, Fla. (UPI) - “Ouch.” That’s what a Florida woman who allegedly had crack cocaine crammed in her vagina said during a traffic stop on June 24 in Wabasso. Indian River County Sheriff’s Office investigators pulled over Robert William King and Jennifer Crosby because it appeared that their vehicle had a window tint violation. When King was asked for his license, the 47-year-old responded, “I don’t have a license! I’m habitual.” Crosby, 42, supposedly seemed skittish and a female deputy was summoned to the scene to look for drugs, TC Palm reported. After she arrived, Crosby allegedly confessed to having drugs in her vagina. “Ouch,” she said. “The foil is hurting the inside of my vagina.” King was arrested on a habitual traffic offender charge. Crosby was arrested on possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia charges.

OCONEE COUNTY, Fla. (UPI) - A Georgia man who appeared to be “highly intoxicated” was arrested after allegedly telling an Oconee County officer that his dog drove him to the store so that he could purchase corn. According to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, Sgt. Partain responded to a call about a dog in a hot car. When Partain arrived on the scene, he encountered a canine in a locked vehicle that had a temperature which clocked in at 123 degrees when measured with a handheld thermometer. Partain also saw a can of gasoline inside the vehicle and said the smell was stifling. The car’s driver, Wesley Terrell, allegedly told Partain that “the dog drove him to Bell’s to buy some corn.” The 60-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and driving under the influence. Animal control took the dog into custody. RAPID CITY, SD - What should have been a fun way to kick off the Fourth of July weekend quickly turned tragic for the South Dakota man who choked to death while eating hot dogs during a competitive eating contest. The crowd was stunned when one of six contestants - Walter Eagle Tail, 47 -

JULY 17 2014

began to choke on the fatal weenie. Paramedics who were called to his side tried in vain to save him. “There was someone doing CPR when we arrived,” Custer County Sheriff Rick Wheeler said. “Basically, he probably just suffocated. It got lodged in his throat and they couldn’t get it out.” Eagle Tail’s death put a damper on the festivities sponsored by the Custer Chamber of Commerce. Organizers cancelled a planned pie eating contest for the next day. Wheeler said he was not sure if the death will prompt organizers to make changes to the contest next year. Because you can’t have men choking on weenies all over a small, closeknit community like that. Deaths during competitive eating contests have happened in the past. A Romanian man choked to death during a sausage-eating contest in 2013 in that country, and in 2012, a Florida man choked to death after eating dozens of live cockroaches during a contest. But whether it is swallowing weenies, sausages or cock—roaches, those in the world of competitive eating say safety is always a top priority.

JULY 17-20

THE MIDNIGHT SWINGER

COCKY AND CONFIDENT BUT NEVER DULL, THE MIDNIGHT SWINGER ERUPTS ONTO THE STAGE LIKE THE VOLCANO IN FRONT OF THE MIRAGE HOTEL IN A FRESH AND ORIGINAL, OVER-THE-TOP EVENT THAT HAS BEEN CALLED SHARP-WITTED, CLEVER AND CLASSY. THE MIDNIGHT SWINGER COMBINES THE STYLE AND COOL OF A 60'S LAS VEGAS PERFORMER WITH THE FLASH AND EXCITEMENT OF A 21ST CENTURY SUPER BOWL HALFTIME EXTRAVAGANZA.

JULY 24-27

DALE JONES

DALE'S MACHINE GUN STYLE DELIVERY AND ANIMATED FACIALS COMBINED WITH QUICK IMPROVISATIONS AND NON-STOP PHYSICAL COMEDY HAS LED TO TV APPEARANCES ON FOX, THE COMEDY NETWORK IN CANADA AND IN THE MOVIE "OUT OF TIME" WITH DENZEL WASHINGTON. HE MADE IT TO THE FINAL 18 ON NBC'S LAST COMIC STANDING. DALE HAS BECOME A FAVORITE HERE AT THE COMEDY CATCH AND YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS THIS HIGH ENERGY SHOW!

SEPTEMBER 5-7

ROB SCHNEIDER

HIS COMBINATION OF SELF-DEPRECATING HUMOR AND GOOFBALL ANTICS EARNED HIM RAVE REVIEWS, AND HE WAS SOON OPENING FOR THE LIKES OF JAY LENO AND JERRY SEINFELD. SCHNEIDER GOT HIS BIG BREAK IN 1990, WHEN SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE PRODUCER LORNE MICHAELS HIRED HIM ON AS A WRITER FOR THE SHOW. SOON, HE WAS PERFORMING HIS OWN MATERIAL AND WAS A CAST REGULAR UNTIL 1994 WHEN HE LEFT TO PURSUE HIS FILM CAREER.

being laid bare to the world... but as their race to reclaim their video leads to a night they’ll never forget, they’ll find that their video will expose even more than they bargained for. NOW SH OWING 22 Jump Street PG-13 After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt and Jenko when they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Now they don’t have to just crack the case - they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship. If these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them. America PG-13 In an era where the American Dream seems to have faded into a dark new dawn, filmmakers Dinesh D’Souza and John Sullivan ponder what may have become of the world if the U.S. had never come into being. By creating an alternate history in which British forces kill General George Washington during the American Revolutionary War, the filmmakers lay the groundwork for a thought-provoking meditation on the crucial role of the United States on the world stage.

11990000 His Master’s Voice, the logo of the Victor Recording Company and later RCA Victor, was registered with the US Patent Office. The logo shows the dog, Nipper, looking into the horn of a gramophone. 11995544 Sun Records releases the first Elvis Presley single, “That’s All Right”, a cover of Arthur Crudup’s 1946 tune “That’s All Right, Mama”. Only about 7,000 original copies were pressed, but the disc became a local hit in Memphis. After the session, Bill Black was said to have remarked, “Damn. Get that on the radio and they’ll run us out of town.”

first recorded by The Raindrops in 1963. A Pittsburgh DJ had begun playing the two year old recording and regional record sales had reached over 80,000. James called the members of his now defunct band, but they were no longer interested. He recruited a group called The Raconteurs to be the new Shondells and took the master tape of “Hanky Panky” to Roulette Records, who released it. Despite being a huge hit in the US, it could only reach #38 in the UK. Tommy would later say, “One night I was playing for 20 drunks in a bar in Michigan, and the next night I’m playing for 10,000 screaming fans in Pittsburgh. It was literally overnight.” Motown Records releases The Supremes’ second single, “Buttered Popcorn” with “Who’s Loving You” on the flip side. The record, featuring Florence Ballard on lead vocal, would be a total flop. 11996644 After being recorded in just one take, The Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun” entered the UK chart at #16. The next week, it was at #3 and seven days later it rose to number one. To promote the group in the US, disc jockeys were sent boxes of animal crackers wrapped with special promotional material. The Supremes’ “Where Did Our Love Go?” enters Billboard’s Hot 100. It would stay on the chart for 14 weeks and become the group’s first number one hit.
