From the Publisher’s Notebook As I approach my 79th birthday I seem to see more going on in life. We let our natural-born citizens go hungry while we welcome and feed thousands of people who came into our country illegally. We give non-citizens money, food, and a place to live, while we have military vets on the street and hungry.

Have you been to a Lookouts game? places now (I know not all - not fast Great fun - reasonable price – try it. food, but sit down places). It will make a nice place for the Patten Tower residents to meet and enjoy—oh wait, the city will ban them from using it. Is that racism? I think the clock is ticking for the big implosion (some of you know what I mean, the others will soon realize it). Why don’t they give Trump a chance, what are they afraid of? Why all the bike lanes around town? Most of the bike riders ride where they want and don’t use the lanes have you seen any of them using them? Bicycle riders get you’re a**es out of the traffic lanes and stop holding up traffic. Looks like we are becoming a city of Mexican, pizza, and burger restaurants, with a huge number of brew pubs. Thank goodness for a few fine restaurants like Scottie’s on the River to give us a better break. Stories From the CPD About four years ago I retired from the Chattanooga Police Department. I had worked there for just shy of 30 years. I worked patrol, then as a burglary/robbery detective and finished my career as the “Beer Board’” inspector. This had me making sure businesses were okay to get a beer license and trying to insure the already licensed were complying with the Chattanooga City and state laws. During this time I also served on the Special Weapons and Tactics Team primarily as a sniper. I had a few exploits along the way and thought I would share some of my experiences with you. I also used to help with the police department’s firearms training. One night at the police

Speaking of the police range, years ago I was at the range attending SWAT training. We were practicing “Sniper Initiated Entries” where an entry team is lined up ready to run into a mock up of a room to rescue hostages. They would proceed into the room after the sniper fired a shot. This was to simulate the sniper having to shoot a criminal / terrorist and then the entry team would storm the room to rescue any hostages or was obviously jumpy and kept exploded with laughter as we engage hostile threats. sniper fired the shot the number one man in the entry team lineup dropped like a rock. The sniper who had fired the shot looked over at his observer in disbelief. The number two man in the stack knelt and began looking as if to check for injuries. I was thinking there is no way he could have missed by that much...Suddenly the “wounded” entry team member stood up and the entry team and the rest of the team who had been observing broke out into laughter. Reluctantly we had to admit they had pulled a good one on us. Since I’m talking SWAT and entry teams I ‘ll tell a story on myself. I had just gotten on the team and we got a call out to go to a motel to try to capture a murder suspect. They advised us to not take time to put on all our gear and uniforms just put on our bulletproof vests, gear belts and weapons. We quickly assembled and formed a line on the stairs leading up to the suspect’s location. We started stealthily moving up the stairs when to my horror my pager (this was several years ago) went off. I quickly grabbed for it and got it shut off. Needless to say the rest of the team were not happy. Our negotiators contacted the suspect who came out and gave up without incident. Luckily he had not heard my pager. As all ended well my transgression was forgotten. One time when I was still on patrol we received a call of a disorder and possible shots fired. Unfortunately people would sometimes claim there were shots fired to get a quicker response. We got to the address given but it appeared no one was home. Someone told us some neighborhood kids had been shooting fireworks so myself and

the other responding officer relaxed somewhat. I wanted to be conscientious though so I decided to check out the backyard. The other officer mentioned the chain- link fence and said that ‘they might have a dog”. I should have listened. I told him the yard looked deserted. About that time a fairly small dog came out from somewhere and began yapping at us. I told my back-up “see it’s just a little dog”. Then my back-up pointed out a very large dog house over in the shaded corner of the yard where it was not very visible. He said, “that’s a big dog house for a little dog like that”. I was just thinking he was right when a huge dog came charging from the shadows. This dog was dappled with brown, black and gray. He looked like he had rolled in mud and grease to camouflage himself. He had hidden well and stayed quiet until his prey (us) were far enough into the yard that escape was unlikely. He charged like a rhino never growling or barking. I didn’t think I just pulled my Colt Python .357 Magnum fast as lightning and pulled the trigger/ KABOOM really doesn’t do the sound of a .357 Magnum justice but it gives you a little idea of how loud the sound was. It appeared to me as if the dog’s head bounced off the ground several times. I turned and ran for the gate at that point just about climbing over my partners’ back in my haste to escape ”Cujo”. As we fled the yard the other officer was yelling “you killed that dog”. I said ‘ I couldn’t have!” I knew I had aimed in front of the dog. I am an animal lover and would never shoot a dog. We looked back into the yard and saw ‘Cujo” casually walking away. Apparently his head bouncing off the ground was just him suddenly applying the brakes at the report of the ENIGMA

.357 Magnum being fired. Thank goodness no animals were harmed. We quickly left the scene and resumed patrolling the fair city. I did go to an out of the way spot and replaced my spent bullet with another one I kept handy. We did not do any paperwork on the weapon being fired. Later our lieutenant called for reports. As my back up and I were talking to him he said that someone had called in a shots fired report near our call location. He then said “it musta been fireworks..” He knew us too well.

his gas mask back with holes poked in the filter. After the call myself and another detective were processing the crime scene as it was contaminated with the gas. We noticed a large hole in an interior room that looked like a shotgun created hole. This hole was in the direction of where myself and another sniper had been concealed in the bushes. The miscreant in this incident admitted he had fired one shotgun round during the stand off. I enjoyed my 30 years with the CPD. It went by seemingly in a flash. Thankfully I received with no major injury . Please back and support your local police. I hope they make it to retirement with just some stories to tell.

I’ve had many people ask me down through the years if I’ve been shot or shot at. The only time I know of that a shot was fired in my direction was on a SWAT call in North Chattanooga. We had used gas to get the guy to - Mark Haskins surrender. His gas mask did not work as a SWAT Team in another In memoriam: Sgt. America, at least from this guy’s point of view. After pulling off what sounds like a slick, little ‘snatch-and-grab’ he was confronted with one of America’s biggest problems; too many guns. The incident began when 36-year-old Christopher Raymond Hill, entered the liquor store at Walmart in Florida and asked if he can exchange a $20 for smaller bills. The employee informed Hill that he would have to buy something in order to get change from the $20 bill. Hill then bought a pack of cigarettes, but when the cashier opened the register, he jumped on the counter, he grabbed the cash There are too many guns in register and ran out of the store. The video, recorded on eastbound Highway 836 in Miami, shows the Chrysler Pacifica traveling in front of the filmer’s vehicle when a black cover descends to conceal its license plate from toll booth cameras. The couple said they reported the driver to the Florida Highway Patrol. “I was told by the Florida State Troopers that this is not the first time this driver has committed this crime,” the woman wrote.

This woman came up with a way to rob people while ensuring that they will not be home at the time. Police in New York began looking for a thief who targeted people while they were mourning the loss of their loved ones. Several people in Westchester County filed reports on different occasions after returning home from funerals and finding that their homes were burglarized. Pearl Northrup said her family woke up to the loud banging of the roof being removed from the house. “Somebody is banging on my roof,” Northrup said. “I thought I was getting a new roof.” Northrup called her landlord, Sarah Fritchey, to ask why she wasn’t warned about the project, and Fritchey revealed that no such work had been ordered. L.B. Skaggs, owner of roofing company NASTAR, said workers put the wrong address into their GPS. A Michigan man faced a more severe version of a similar situation when a demolition crew mistakenly tore his house down instead of a neighboring home that was slated to be demolished. Police told Mike Anderson, the owner of the incorrectly demolished house, that someone had taken the numbers from the house slated for demolition and nailed them to his home.

Here Comes the Judge - Gary Humble Looks to Continue His Public Service to The Community of Signal Mountain As Judge With 38 years experience upholding the law of the land both on a federal level and private practice, Gary Humble strikes fear into the bad guys upholding his oath to serve. Over the course of his career he has tried more than a hundred felony criminal jury trials and civil cases and resolved many hundreds more. Not content to sit still Humble has decided to run for Signal Mountain Town Judge. We were luck enough to speak with the candidate about law politics and his Signal Mountain community.

division, I had no interest in criminal cases but, at the time, I was in the trial section and they were doing a lot of criminal antitrust cases and so I started doing that. I said, “This is fun. I like doing that.” I just got more involved with

It is. I mean, in criminal antitrust cases in particular, and a lot of civil cases… price-fixing is what generally what is prosecuted criminally – price-fixing, bid rigging… and what happens is competitors get together and basically form a monopoly. So you can have ostensible competitors who are getting together and agreeing on prices and dividing up markets – geographic and product markets – and such actions restrain trade and have the effect of increasing prices to the public and consumers. A monopoly, of course, is where you have one company that has market power and has the ability to raise prices due to their market power. So the effect is really the same. It’s just a different way of approaching it. Of course, there are different statutes under the antitrust law but Section 1 of the Sherman Act is the one that is one of the primary vehicles of enforcement and the section for competitors and then Section 2 is the monopoly.

Interestingly enough, there’s an old opinion – I’d say it’s fifty years old – where Oliver Douglas came up with a hypothetical on mergers where, eventually, we’d just have two corporations for the whole country. One would be east of the Mississippi and the other would be west of the Mississippi. You know, it’s really difficult to say. A lot of the current mergers - in particular the Time Warner merger - seem, to me, very complicated. I don’t have all the facts to make a judgment but I will say that I thought it was interesting, from what I’ve read about this recent case with American Express, where the Supreme Court said that American Express can go ahead and require that businesses not offer discounts and things to customers that would undermine American Express. I thought that the interesting thing about that is that my understanding of the antitrust laws always was that the laws were not intended to protect competitors but intended to protect consumers and it seemed to me that the Court, looking at the facts, the majority saw the effect being positive for the consumers with that practice and the minority, in the opinion, was looking to protect the businesses. Anyway, that’s just my opinion about it. It’s interesting. A lot of it is over

my head, frankly. Unless you get involved and get in the weeds with those things, it can be very difficult to decide what the facts are. That’s why those cases last so long, because the judge is trying to decide what the product market is, the territorial market … you almost have to do a complete expose of the industry in order to get to the bottom of it. That’s about the best I can tell you.

people are so nice over there. I have just thoroughly enjoyed getting to know a lot more of the bar and a lot more of the judges by virtue of being over there. I’ve enjoyed that a lot.

I’ve spent most of my time, actually, in state court and have learned a lot of law. I’ve had a couple of things in federal court but the vast majority of my time has been devoted to state court cases. I’ve done civil and criminal. It’s been a wonderful learning experience for me. The practice in state court is so much different that federal court. People that have experienced both, I’m sure, are amazed like I am at what the differences are. I’m not sure how feared I was. I hope I was respected. A lot of my time was spent on public corruption cases and complex fraud cases. I also did a lot of other things as well. Felony possession cases are a very common thing. It used to be in the U.S. Attorney’s office that you handled whatever involved the United States in court so that, twenty-five years or even twenty years ago, we wouldn’t just be handling criminal cases, we’d be doing civil cases as well. So I tried slips and falls at the Post Office. I tried a wrongful death case. You just get all kinds of different experiences there. You know, go to bankruptcy court. Ninety to ninety-five percent of what I did over the years was criminal. I got a lot of the public corruption cases and the fraud cases. ENIGMA

I think the vast majority of people on Signal Mountain want to try to keep it like it is, keep the small town aspect of the environment. Try to avoid problems from increased traffic and things like that. I say that just as a citizen living up

there because obviously the judgeship’s got nothing to do with that but, of course, I’m like everybody else. I have opinions about things.

I think I can do the job well. It’s a part-time job and I’m not looking to do something full-time. I like having some flexibility with my time, so the fact that it is a part-time job is very attractive and it’s something where I can make a positive contri-

I had some really good people to work with and I think we made a positive difference in a kit if ways, the public corruption cases like with the sheriff, Billy Long. Because of that case, he couldn’t continue to be sheriff and I think that was a good thing for the community. I think that some of the cases involving corrupt police officers, those are good things for the community. Ever since Donald Trump announced his candidacy for leader of the free world three years ago it has become “Must See TV”. It took me a while to warm up to the current U.S. president, but I finally did. It’s not been a smooth road for me as I’ve had plenty of face palm and WTF moments, but by and large I like a lot of what I’ve seen on his part while still questioning many.

They don’t see the irony that they created this so-called monster. They have no one to blame than themselves. And Trump likewise used this notoriety and actual business acumen to achieve the highest throne imaginable – leader of the free world.

There is no question Trump has an over-inflated ego but you can’t argue with a lot of Trump on all these talk shows it’s not his fault. It’s the fault what he says – sure you will, and every host kissing his of the very media that has after all you’ve been told to behind. The hypocrisy of the opposition was never more evident than when a reporter went out not long ago and asked about a particular Trump policy. Every person being asked all loved the policy when they told it was a Hillary Clinton idea or Trump’s name wasn’t mentioned. When they heard it was a Trump policy they stuttered and immediately opposed it. Very adult. The fact Donald Trump does not have full support should make you believe he’s not a true part of the political system. You would think that would make a lot of people jump for joy. The traditional, out of touch two-party system was finally beat. But no. It should concern you how

vicious the two-party establishment system has gone fullthrottle to try and eliminate this president just short of an assassination, but after the words of Maxine Waters, can that be far behind? If there was ever a time for anarchy in the U.S., that, by all means is when we should go to war – not over silly insults, harsh words or typos.

Democratic Party gets easily offended by Trump’s words. While at times crass, I’ll admit and even some questionable behavior while a private citizen. Since he began his run for office he’s been accused of being every kind of “phobe” or “ist” you can think of. I believe they even invented a few just to add insult to injury. While his behavior in the past with women may not I find it hilarious that the have been the best, I find it

has always been way more hostile towards women than anything we actually know of Trump saying or actually doing. I found great irony that the two major political parties put two flawed candidates up for the office with a combined age of 140. For well over a decade the GOP has been mocked as being out of touch and the party of old white

guys. The 2016 primaries saw a lot of new blood with most of the candidates in the field being in their 40s and early 50s with both sexes, black, white and even two candidates of Cuban heritage (Cruz and Rubio). The Democrats on the other hand’s youngest candidate was in his late 50s with the rest in their mid and late 60s. I thought the party represented youth and change. Apparently not. I still remember watching then freshman senator Barack Obama’s speech at the 2004 convention and knew things for going to change in our political system. Four years later he was the surprise nominee (another upset loss for Hillary Clinton). Obama served two terms as president that up to that point was one of the most polarizing administrations. Obama has radical roots and the party seemed to embrace that. But when your plans are for all intents and purposes a complete failure and saw both the House and Senate have control taken over by the Republicans, I guess it’s time to regroup. What the former president brought to the party was a new way to campaign. Known as a community organizer he followed along with the script to Saul Alinsky’s “Rules For Radicals”. Obama lived by rule number four, in the which was to ridicule your opponent. He brought former Speaker of the House John Boehner to tears a number of

times and often made a group of uptight Republicans look silly and out of touch with the American people. What the Democrats and everyone else didn’t expect was for Trump to use their own playbook against them. From day one Trump took to ridiculing his opponents in the primaries and then in the election. He still does now in office when someone disagrees with him and for all intents and purposes is rude to him. No one in decades had ever seen a Republican candidate stand their ground as Trump. Other candidates would not of fared as well from the onslaught of attacks he received on the campaign trail and even today as I write this. He seems to thrive on the attacks. But what happened in between the insults is what critics haven’t picked up on. He addressed issues that every American cares about – finances, security and Constitutional rights.

The political parties along with the aid of big business local an abroad have been reestablishing a ruling class. Our elections have become a sham. They were more civil without riots and vandalism. And as much of an egomaniac I always thought Trump was, he’s going through with his vision to make the country better and succeeding. He of course “has” to win. I don’t think his ego can take defeat and for some reason it hasn’t to date.

Bassist John Deacon Is An Overlooked Component In The Success Of Queen When the long anticipated Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody finally makes it to screens across the country, most viewers will be focused on the performance of Rami Malik in his role as Freddie Mercury. As the lead vocalist and front man, the charismatic Mercury was naturally the face

of the band. Fans of that unique electric guitar that enhances most of Queen ‘s songs will no doubt be paying close attention to the performance of Gwylim Lee, who in the film will be portraying Brian May.

Limahl’s Too Shy But NeverEnding Story No ‘80s playlist is complete without the song, “Too Shy”. The song rocketed up the charts hitting number one in a number of countries and the top five in the United States. Kajagoogoo was fronted by vocalist Limahl (nee Christopher Hamill). You couldn’t turn on MTV at the time without seeing the video and the style and hair(!) of both the singer and the rest of the band. After the highly successful “White Feathers” that featured the song, Limahl left the band. In 1984 he had equal success as a solo artist with the title track for the movie “The NeverEnding Story” that reached number one and two in Europe and peaked at number six in the United States. The band dissolved in 1985 and reformed for a one-off show in 2003 before reforming in 2007 with Limahl back fronting the band since 2008. I recently spoke with the iconic singer as he was preparing for his first ever tour of the United States.

very depressed state… the country was in a depressed state. The unions were calling strikes and the miners were fighting the government in the late ‘70s. So, we had power cuts because the whole state relied on coal for power. Then came punk. It was pain, it was spitting, and it was dark and really quite unmelodic. It was like a social comment, a social state. Then, when new wave came along around 1980, we had the arrival of the synthesizer. The beautiful sounds of these machines that no one had really heard before and then polyphonic as opposed to quadraphonic. We started seeing quadraphonic synthesizer sounds coming into late ‘70s disco records, but then they went polyphonic so you had Human League, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, people like that… guitar was certainly never more out of vogue than in ‘80-‘81, certainly in the U.K. Together with these sounds and this backlash against punk and this dark period ENIGMA

Of course, it had an impact. The idea of a twenty-four hour music video channel was so exciting because, if you liked music, as most people did, if you like radio, as most people did, here you had the added musical bonus. You could hear your favorite songs and watch the artist perform, maybe, some kind of a story in the video, get some special effects of whatever. So it was phenomenal. It had a huge impact. And I think we all remember, don’t we, that the first song played on MTV was “Video Killed the Radio Star,” which was obviously perfect for the launch of their station. It’s almost as if they commissioned it… (laughs) it may be one of those best-kept secrets, because you imagine the corporate mentality, the financial gamble, the risk to the investors… they may approached someone like Trevor Horn and said, ”You know what? sure it got that much airplay. I thought it was cool. I thought it was punk. The punk charts were made up from sales, not a combination and airplay, which is how they’d done it for thirty years. musicians, they all want what they want. You know, the guitarist wants the guitar louder the drummer wants the drums louder… and so is really important to have that kind of efficient person – the head chef in the kitchen - who can take charge. That’s why bands need managers because bands and musicians will fall out over stuff like that. So, that’s what they brought to it. But, more than that, I had met Nick Rhodes at the Embassy Club on Bond Street, London, where I was a waiter. I served him a drink and started telling him all about my band. To my amazement, he was very interested. He said to me, “Send me your cassette. Send me your demos.” So I sent him a cassette to the address he gave me with all my details. A week later, he phoned me up and he said, “I really like the demos. I’m going to go to Ian at our record company and tell

It was one of those wonderful accidents where you are just playing around with ideas. When we first started the track, the intro… of course, we all love the intro with that great bass line and then, when we got to the verse, it was really flat. And we all went, “We need to do something better there.” We kept that kind of warmth underneath going, and then we wrote the middle. What’s interesting is that, around the world, “Too Shy” has become kind of this ‘80s classic. I often say to the new songwriters and new musician that I meet, “ The really good stuff, the really unusual, the unique, the fresh, the hard to find… we’ve got a century of relics… you’ve got to dig deep.” And I think that is why “Too Shy”

Nick was already thinking outside the Duran Duran box, thinking, “What else can I do that would be interesting music?” It’s a bit like the actor that becomes a director or producer. I love “Too Shy.” It’s weird, because people talk about the curse of the one big hit. I’m sure Whitney got fed up with performing “I Will Always Love You.” Celine probably is fed up performing the Titanic song. There are many other examples of that, of course. The reaction of the crowd, when they hear the song, is what keeps it fresh for you – the artist – every time. I’ve had people come up to me on the streets with headphones on and say, “I am listening to you right now on my Spotify!” or listening on Apple Music. Looking back, I was 23, 24 and, suddenly, we’ve got this worldwide number one, top five in America, and we’re traveling the world. I’ve from a working-class background. My family had absolutely no money. My father was a miner. Here I am, performing at the Royal Variety show in London and I was at the Palladium in London, meeting all these amazing contemporaries, Princess Diana and Freddie Mercury. The list goes on … that song! When it came out on January 3, the December before, it was the year I was at my record label building on Manchester Square in London. One of the executives pulled me aside in the corridor and said, “Look, Limahl, you know your single comes out in January and just wanted to let you know it won’t be a hit. It could sort of put you on the map.” They were thinking long-term. They had plans for the band. So, it was “Don’t get too upset. “ I remember spending the entire Christmas a bit down, because the words he said to me, they were ringing in my ears like a nightmare. He said, “Your first single will not be a hit.” And he was so wrong… (laughs)… so wrong. I am so glad that he was so wrong. The value of “Too Shy”’ went up even more after that, because of what he had said.

Robert Plant Turns It Up On A HOt Summer Evening As shocking as it may sound to my music snob friends I was never a really big Led Zeppelin fan or one of Robert Plant. I’m not sure why, it’s not like they ever did anything to me. Their blues-infused heavy rock wasn’t my thing when they came out. Kids today that listen to music don’t know what they’ve missed out being born in the last couple of decades. While I may sound like an old fart saying it, your music sucks. There’s no other way to accurately put it. From the mid ‘60s to the late ‘90s there was so much diversity in music and when Zeppelin came out in the late ‘60s rock and roll as a genre was barely a teenager. There was a lot of originality and everything seemed new. Granted, music since the beginning of time borrowed from itself and pay homage to itself

Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of Led Zeppelin songs I like – dare I say, love. I even remember where I was when I heard about Jon Bonham dying. I was on the soccer field at my high school. It was surreal because two years earlier when in junior high I remember when I heard about the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash (walking down the stairs at school). And prior to this show the only time I saw Plant in concert was during his tour in support of Raising Sand, an album he recorded with Alison Krauss. kind of stage show, featuring some of the best front men and women in the world and now I know who a lot emulate on stage – Robert Plant. Unlike other leads, Plant is the original. He strutted around the stage in a manner that I saw Steven Tyler every time I’ve seen Aerosmith, especially the way he swings his mic stand around like a prop. Now I realize Tyler is copying Plant. And that voice… unlike the few contemporaries that remain around, he could bring it with screeching rock and roll to a more soulful blues sound. The set included a healthy mix of solo material, he put out a new album last year with the Space Shifters as his backing band, as well as songs from a band he released a few years earlier as part of the Sensational Space Shifters, as well as well-represented songs from the Led Zepplein catalog like

“The Lemon Song”, which he opened the show with and “In the Mood”, his first encore song as well as Joan Baez’s “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You” and one Page/Plant song, “Please Read the Letter”. While billed as Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters, the band’s role in the music was more than that of a backing band. Each member was allowed to showcase their talent and had an integral part in making up the song. Seth Lakeman, who had the opening slot on the bill, fiddle playing took center stage at one point as well as the work of Justin Adams and Liam Taylor on guitar. It was obvious this was more than just support and a team effort. The band finished the night with “Whole Lotta” love that segued to the traditional song, “Santianna” and bringing it back to “Whole Lotta Love” to end the evening. ENIGMA
