Lucas came to me as did four of my other dogs via my girlfriend at the time. I’ll always remember I was at Porkers restaurant eating with some friends when I got the call. I talked with my then girlfriend who was at the Humane Educational Society (called the pound as I grew up) looking for a dog. She related there were a couple she liked but she couldn’t make up her mind. She then mentioned one of the prospects was on “Death Row”, that is he was slated to be “euthanized”. I told her that was the one I would get as she would know she had saved him as his time was up. Perhaps the other ones would be adopted as they had more time. (The pound would only keep animals for so long at that time before they were “euthanized”. I

by during the day to let him out while Chrissy was at work. Chrissy decided Lucas (Lukey) needed some company. She got a Springer Spaniel puppy to hang out with Lucas. However, Lucas was always somewhat of a loner and preferred to interact or play with humans over his new brother, “Little Man”. This trend continued for the rest of Lucas’ life. He interacted with people he was familiar with but never really gelled with other dogs. He would tolerate the other dogs in my “pack’” but he did not play much with the other dogs. That was fine and we accepted Luke as he was. He eventually became a fixture at my house. As I mentioned, before he came to “Casa Haskins” Luke lived at my girlfriends’ house in East Ridge. Lucas was a free spirit and wanted to roam free. Although my girlfriend had an enclosed backyard Lucas always wanted to roam a little more. One day he escaped the yard and was running loose through the

neighborhood. Once he got out like that he liked to run, often until he tired himself out. We could not get him to come to us and Lucas seemed to delight in our attempts to capture him. The problem was that one nearby street was very busy. Lucas had no experience with cars and would wander right in front of one. We needed to get him before he got hit. Lucas was very fond of riding in my girlfriend’s car so she jumped in the car to try to lure him in. I was still on foot going through yards trying to keep sight of our fugitive dog. Shortly afterward I saw one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen: a silver Mustang convertible with top down being chased down the road by Lucas. I could hear his nails skittering on the pavement as he sprinted to keep up with his master’s ‘pony”. He followed her home and after his running to keep up with the “Stang”. He was exhausted and eagerly went back into the house. I can still see Lucas sprinting for all he was worth trying to keep up with the Mustang and it always makes me smile. Another Lucas escape caused me much frustration one morning a year or so later. I had recently moved into a house but there was no fence. One morning Lucas made a break for it before I could get a leash on him. The chase was on. The girlfriend was not home to help me and it was pouring rain. I was already dressed for work in dress shirt and slacks and tie so I was trying to not get dirty or soaked. To make matters worse I was late for work. After chasing Lucas through the neighborhood for awhile I finally got him into my unmarked police car. He had this dog grin on his face as I took him home. Lucas and Littleman had grown up staying in their crates (basically a big metal cage type affair). They were trained on the verbal command “crate” to go get into their metal home. They appeared to be synchronized as they would both head for their crate upon hearing this command. They would go into the crate then quickly turn around in unison. It was fun to watch. Except for his occasional breakout Lucas never gave me many problems. Although he was a little standoffish with the other dogs he never started anything. However, I had a large part mastiff/part pitbull? (We were never sure what he was) that just did not care for Lucas. Although Lucas was not in the least aggressive or assertive towards this dog he would not back down when pressed. Although this dog “Fido” was much bigger than Lucas and outweighed

him by over 40 pounds. Lucas would “give as good as he got” and fought back. I ended up making some trips to the vet over their disputes. Lucas also had another antagonist my Chihuahua, Buddy, who would nip at Lucas’ heels as they went out my back door to the fenced back yard. Buddy would also sit on his puppy bed and growl at Lucas while buddy “guarded” his food. Buddy had reason for this as frequently when he got up to go get a drink or go out to go to the bathroom Lucas would gobble down Buddy’s’ food. Eventually I learned that if Buddy was tarrying out in the yard I could get him to come in fast if I told him, “Buddy Lucas is gonna get your food!” Buddy would come running as fast as his little Chihuahua legs would carry him. One thing Lucas did that annoyed me was his ability to stand on his back legs and grab food off the stove or kitchen counters. H could turn his neck sideways and get items I thought were far enough back to be safe. Lucas ate batches of fresh baked sugar cookies (twice), a coconut cake, plenty of cat food and a Honey Baked ham he managed to swipe off the counter or stove. Thankfully we had already had our Easter lunch before he pillaged the ham.

trouble standing. One day he didn’t get up at all. I tried to help him stand but he could not put weight on his left front leg. It was badly swollen. I took him to one vet and he was prescribed anti-inflammatory medicine, antibiotics and painkillers. I had to carry Luke to and from the car or truck. When at home I would carry him to go out to go relieve himself. He seemed to rally and was moving around some on his own. The swelling went down in his leg. He was eating and drinking well. He seemed to be rallying. Then he nose-dived again. He was not getting up and barely eating.

I’ve smile now when I think about Luke running down the road behind a convertible, his escapes, and his just being there. I frequently bring my dogs back leftovers from restaurants and dole out the scraps. I brought some back the other day and as I was portioning out pieces I I loaded Luke up in my pickup looked for Lucas then remembered (which he always loved to ride in) he was gone. and took him to my regular vet, Yvonne Ward at Northgate Animal I get the most comments about my Hospital. Lucas’ grave.

I will never forget the time Lucas became choked on a potato chip and I had to perform the Heimlich Maneuver on him. No I am not kidding. Sadly Lucas began to slow down in recent years. He had problems with infections in his ears and eventually went deaf. He developed arthritis in his hips and got up and down very slowly. I no longer had to worry about him running off. I could easily catch him. He still did walks around my cul-de-sac and for awhile I would just loop his leash over his shoulder and he and Little Man would walk themselves with me following behind. A neighbor came out one day and said she thought they had gotten loose until she saw me behind them. She looked questioningly at their leashes looped over their backs. I explained they were walking themselves. She thought it was hilarious. Lucas began having a harder and harder time getting around. He no longer walked the cul-de-sac. He would just go out and do his business. One day Lucas fell and I had to pick him up. He was having a difficult time getting his footing on my laminate and vinyl flooring. The next couple of days he was having ENIGMA

Sometimes you will hear people say, “They were like family” referring to their pets. To some of us they are family. I had Lucas for sixteen years. He frustrated me some when he ran loose but I grin about it now. Someone once said “he likes to run free like his dad” referring to me. I had to agree.

According to court documents Aldinger admitted to intentionally striking pedestrians with his Toyota Camry at two different intersections. The assaults were a way for Aldinger to “get out of going to work,” he told officers. He vocalized he was unhappy with his life of food service work and the direction his life had taken. After hitting two people in two different

He told the officer that he was looking forward to “spending a few years in a room.” Rachel Schmidt of New Brunswick and her 11-year-old son bought a realistic-looking skeleton decoration at a local yard sale. When the skeleton didn’t fit in their trunk, the two decided it would be funny if it rode in the front seat. Schmidt went to shop for groceries later in the day and left the decoration in the car. When she came back out, her car was blocked by a police cruiser as someone had apparently called out of concern for what appeared to be a body in the car. “The officer said, ‘I need to inspect your vehicle,’ so then it clicked: ‘Oh my gosh, it was that Halloween decoration,’ Schmidt said. A Georgia Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman says the body was found early Sunday morning in about 30 feet of water and he was still tied to the cart. She says in the game Saturday night, participants sat in a shopping cart that was tied to a pole. Others pushed the cart to the end of the dock so that the person sitting in it would be flung into the water. Cummings says the cart was tied to the victim instead of a pole and it pulled him under.

An unidentified flying object has been filmed from a mountain overlooking top secret US air base Area 51. India has a lot of people, and they produce a lot of garbage, and a lot of it ends up at the Ghazipur landfill outside of New Delhi. Or as the locals call it; ‘Mount Everest’. Ghazipur first opened in 1984, but by 2002 the landfill had reached capacity and should have been closed, but with nowhere else to put the garbage it just kept growing. Now the pile of barbage is more than 213 feet. Taller than the Taj Mahal or London Bridge. Not only is the huge expanse of trash an eyesore, it is also a hazard. Last year two locals were killed in a landslide after a section of the mountain collapsed. Now it is so tall India’s Supreme Court has warned that it’s well overdue for some aircraft warning lights. India is one of the world’s largest garbage producers. Unless something is done soon, the Ghazipur landfill and others like it may soon grow too large to clean up.

Just Because We Can Just because we have the Freedom to say something, that doesn’t mean we should. The entire world doesn’t need to know every thought we have. Having the ability to say something is one thing. But at what cost? Did that comment make you feel bigger or better about yourself? Did popping the other person’s bubble make more room for you? I see so much bitterness being spewed on TV, social media, and really any media in general. Hell, people are spewing hate faster than a lighting bolt. It almost feels like a social norm now. Everywhere we turn issues and the need to be right/heard are dividing us. I am not making light of the issues by any means. Some of these issues are life altering.

But not every action, every issue, or every conversation needs to be made into a huge deal. And for the love of everybody can we please stop correcting people on everything. Until Next Time, Paul Burke Sr.

Rising From the Rubble To Find Peace & Success On the River Charlie and Renee Eich were iconic fixtures with their popular restaurant, Cheeburger Cheeburger downtown. Located at 2nd and Market it was one of the cornerstones of the revitalization on the riverfront after the Tennessee Aquarium opened. The popular burger joint actually was as much a part of downtown as was the Aquarium, the I-MAX or other destination downtown keeping visitors and locals fed. One day their family literally saw their empire crumble at their feet. After being alerted by the city building inspector the structure was unsafe the Eichs closed the restaurant immediately sending staff home and find out their options with the building. The next day after accessing the building they left and as they walked away from it the front of the structure literally collapsed before their eyes. Looking in disbelief as the now ruins of their business literally lay before them, the family had to decide what to do next. They opted for the opposite of what many figured or hoped they would do and took their business elsewhere. The Eichs chose and older restaurant on Suck Creek Road along the Tennessee River to fix up and opened River Drifters, trading the hustle and bustle of the city for the iconic view of the river and a more laid back atmosphere. We caught up with Charlie Eich to talk about the new restaurant as River Drifters celebrates their first

anniversary.

Really a lot. A lot more than you would think. We advertised it as the “Pounder” but it was actually a 20-ounce burger. Our quarter pound burger was five ounces; our third pound was seven ounces. Everything was a little bit bigger at Cheeburger. That was one of the things they were known for. It got to be on weekends with a large tourist crowd we’d be given a round of applause several times throughout the day for people who had done it. It’s not easy. I’ve done it myself and you’re uncomfortably full when you’re done with it, but it was pretty popular for people to do. I actually saw a little girl do it one time. She must have been about nine. And then several minutes later this big dude finished it – about a 350 pounder. It was almost embarrassing they were clapping for him after they were clapping for this little nine-yearold girl that just did it. But that was very unusual. She’s a future professional eater of some kind I’m sure. It happened a lot. There were some cool stories too where some people would come back years later that had done it and say that was their first date and could they get that picture or somebody had passed away and that was the

last photo that was taken of them and do we still have record of it. So it was a pretty cool novelty. People really enjoyed that.

Yeah, I think it was kind of a double edge sword honestly, because you would lose a lot of the local business at lunchtime during the peak tourist season because people didn’t want to take a chance of trying to find a place to park, but people were already parked who were walking to go to the Aquarium or to the IMAX or any of the tourist things there downtown, the riverfront. So they were already there; paid to park somewhere walking and they were going to find some place to eat. We were so close to the Aquarium – and I hate to sound arrogant or boastful because it just kind of morphed into it, it became kind of iconic. We were part of the

fabric that was downtown. We had been there for so long and were one of the originals – us and 212 [Market]. [TGI] Fridays was there. Basically that was it for a good period of time after the Aquarium opened. So we became part of the institution down there. We were part of the fabric – part of the traditions that people had when they came into Chattanooga. Of course a lot o people visit us from close by, so you’ve got Nashville, Knoxville, Atlanta, Huntsville – people getting a quick two-day vacation for the weekend. And we had a lot of regular customers who were from hours away and sometimes they’d drive hours just to eat lunch with us, which was pretty flattering.

We actually even looked at over in East Ridge outside of Camp Jordan – the Jordan Crossroads development they’ve got going over there where the new Chick-Fil-A is. I was out riding one day on my motorcycle on Suck Creek Road and I saw this place. There’s an old saying, “You can never go home again”. If you were raised somewhere outside of Chattanooga when you go back to visit it’s changed drastically and doesn’t feel like home any more. So I knew if we opened another place downtown: number one you were taking a big chance because real estate is a lot more expensive per square foot down there and we might not be as successful as we

were at the old location. So I thought let’s not try and duplicate it – not try and do the same thing. We probably might not get the same results. Let’s go completely off grid. When I say off grid I don’t mean location, but away from that concept and so something completely different. I was fortunate enough to go away for a couple of weeks about ten or twelve weeks ago and got my captain’s license. I always enjoyed being on the water, around the water, boating, river activities and stuff like that, riding motorcycles. And this location has all those things. It encompasses the hikers, the bikers, the motorcyclists, the outdoor enthusiast, and water activities. I saw this place sitting empty and I thought man, this would be a great spot. We called the agent and we were able to look at it the next day.

We work a lot. (laughs) Particularly when we first opened we were pushing 100 hours a week. I literally lost 30 pounds in our first month here because you’re in the kitchen every day; you’re trying to figure it out; you put the menu together but you never fed hundreds of people at one time so you learn where to store things, how much prep you need to do, how busy you’re going to be with rentals; training a new crew almost while you’re training yourself at the same time. Anytime you open a new place if it’s not already been done and perfected you go through learning curves. But we were extremely fortunate that we were able to start busy, so I was certainly grateful for that because we had so many friends and relationships from our previous life downtown and everybody knew what happened. I don’t think there was pity; there was definitely support. People wanted to come out here and support us in our new place and the news and the media were very friendly towards us and gave us a lot of publicity right off the bat. So we went out of the gate busy and it’s been a real blessing.

tthhee ppll aaccee.. Oh yeah. Once we get people out here they’re hooked. It’s a beautiful place. When I was sitting on the deck before we leased the building there’s always a huge chance of failure when you open a restaurant. You’ve seen it – everybody’s seen it. The place that’s there today is gone tomorrow – and that’s happened more and more and more as people try to dive into this business in Chattanooga. But I thought to myself; if I’m going to go broke I’d rather do it here sitting looking at that mountain and the river than full parking lots that I wasn’t getting any piece of downtown. It just seemed like a good fit at the time – and I’m thankful for it because it’s a more relaxing even though there’s high pressure of being a restaurant owner, having the beauty of the area here tones that down a little bit. Our customers really enjoy it because like you said, it does feel like vacation around here. It feels like a vacation spot around here. You can drive just two miles off of Signal Mountain Boulevard and your blood pressure going to drop 30 points. Awesome.

It’s been really awesome to do some of the things we wanted to do before but couldn’t. I do have a pretty tiny kitchen here, so that did limit some of the things I would like to do. We don’t have tequila or Jagermeister, so that helps a whole lot. (laughs) We’re beer only. We’re kind of in a weird little zone right here. The Chattanooga city limits sign is about a hundred yards that way (pointing) and the next county is about a quarter mile that way, so we’re in a little dead zone. I feel like I could probably petition

the state legislature to change the zoning here and get liquor on a tourist visa type situation, but I’m not sure I even really want to, to be honest with you. We’ve got beers from Oddstory, Heaven & Ale and other local breweries as well as a nice selection of beer. To balance that out – one, I have to balance myself out because now that I’m around beer all the time I’ve got to make sure I don’t drink beer all the time. (both laugh) It’s been nice to be able to have that. You might not want lunch, you might want to grab a beer somewhere so we’re catching another clientele that maybe we didn’t have at Cheeburger Cheeburger. Plus you’re out here on the river; you do have a license to sell beer to go. We have a lot of boaters come in pick up six-packs and a bag of ice and we’ll actually deliver our food down to the boat ramp. It’s nice to see people having fun out there and they can call us and we can bring it to them.

Because of that very reason of being a destination spot I had legitimate concerns. How do we get the word out there? How do we tell people that we’re there? I felt pretty confident that once we could get people in the door we could do a good enough job of taking care of them and make them want to come back and tell their

IN A SHARK-INFESTED SEA FULL 0F SINGER/SONGWRITERS NOT ONLY HAS JASON HAS JASON LYLES MANAGED TO KEEP HIS HEAD ABOVE WATER HE’S MANAGED TO REACH GREENER PASTURES LEAVING OTHERS IN HIS WAKE When Jason Lyles began his career as a singer/songwriter he joined an already saturated market in Chattanooga that saw everyone with open mic nights, coffee shops and small hole-in-the-wall bars hiring singer/songwriters as well. Since he began he’s seen the herd literally dwindle down to just himself and a literal handful of others. Many abandoned their dreams, others moved away trying their hand at writing songs for other artists. After being out of the spotlight for a couple of years (thanks to a growing family), the Chattanooga singer/songwriter is back with a vengeance. His new release, The Undersea Acoustic

Spree mixes the catchy ear candy of power pop with strong lyrical content so there’s no sugary crash afterward. Full of energy and without going over the edge, it’s easy to see how and why Jason Lyles has risen to the front of the pack. After all these years he has finally arrived.

It’s a great creative outlet and for me, I really like connecting with audiences. It’s all about this human connection. Right. Playing solo acoustic most of the songs I write I’ve done live – just me. But when I bring in other players it’s kind of like they’ve taken that framework and build something beautiful out of it. When you take something that’s a bare bones building, add some flying buttresses to it and things that make it a real song. And so essentially the core of it I write myself, but then I have people embellish – put in other parts to it. My drummer, Jeff Bridges came in, we recorded all the percussion for this album in one weekend. I had a lot of it already recorded and I said, “I want you to bring in a bare bones kit, shaker, tambourines and different things and let’s just see what we come up with. He’s a song drummer so he realizes what I want. Yeah, I started out doing the solo acoustic thing and then I got into playing bands. My last couple of projects before this was kind of full band and the full on power pop Cheap Trick kind of stuff. And I had a really good time doing that, but I found out it was much easier to play solo acoustic shows and I could have more control that way with what I wanted to do. So I kept playing those acoustic things and then I wanted to build out from that and that’s were I arrived with this album. I took the solo acoustic stuff I’d been doing and I built in some other instrumentation around it – the mandolin, cello, percussion, some vocal layers and then I came up with this sort of format that really fit the style of songs I wanted to do. It was kind of power pop mixed with Americana.

influences are electronic but a lot of times our production and sounds we’re looking ore towards late ‘70s, early ‘80s and trying – at least for the records, trying to get things that vibe with that sort of studio sound. H w Hoow w ddoo yyoouu ddoo tthhaatt ssttrr iiccttll yy ii nnssttrr uum mee nn-ttaall llyy?? I would guess the same way. Inspiration doesn’t necessarily come in one thing. A lot of songs are pretty narrative. They begin and end some way. This happened to me and I learned this, or like there’s this twist or whatever. In writing instrumental music it somewhat exists. To me it’s more like this collection of either getting a vibe on something or some kind of feeling or telling some kind of story that unfolds. But I think of it in terms of film, like it’s according to form like an interview with Jim Jarmusch or David Lynch where there’s not necessarily this grand arc of things but there’s definitely a heavy vibe that’s created by how everything’s put together, so I think that’s important for us. Even though we’re not using lyrics very often, a melody is something that shapes how people react to in a song. I think a melody is a very important thing for us to write and make sure that’s working in that song. It’s one of the big pieces. Everything works together, but if you can get a really good melody you’ll have stuck in their mind, that’s going to affect that and react to it the way they want.

going back through things. Also we had already done two long days and little bit worn out, so it didn’t feel like we were performing for the camera, it was like let’s just nail these few songs in the best recording possible. The filming of it was like that. It was definitely a different experience from being on stage. It was more like harnessing the energy between us and the audience - using that as a feedback loop. We were really into that insular type of thing; trying to make sure the sounds were as good as they can be with everyone playing at the same time and really get the compositions right.

So that’s where the setlist comes into play. Luke, who is my brother and also writes the music with me writes the setlist. I think he does a good job of working in spaces in the songs. There are certain songs that have a built in guitar solo or something that’s pretty predetermined like that and others are much more open-ended or with these segues between songs where they don’t really know how we’re going to get to the next one and that kind of opens it up to more improvisation. and try to spend our time off the road working on composing, mixing and all the stuff that goes into putting together an album. We approach it like work when we’re on the road. It’s like putting your eight hours or 12 hours you can do working on that stuff because that adds up in the end. If you come in with this idea that I’m going to sit around until inspiration strikes you never really get anything done. You grind something out and the best stuff rises to the top.

I would say maybe five or six years in – maybe a little bit longer than that. Early on Luke would play mostly guitar and start introducing a little bit of synthesizer for those sounds we didn’t think we could get off the guitar. These days we plays 85 percent keyboard; just trying to figure out that kind of balance; figuring out like you said, a balance between improvisation and composition. I think when I go back and listen to early recordings, like the first five or six years I think there was too much improvisation. We would have these songs – essentially just guitar riffs and there would be 15 minutes of jamming. And another song it was basically the same thing. To me I think we’ve gotten a much better balance of having things that are more composed with having more extending improvisation. In terms of incorporating the electronics stuff, that’s just been a journey over time. I’ve definitely been interested in studio stuff, mixing and engineering and developing that side. I think that’s come a long way as well. I don’t know if there was cutting point, but a process.. There is a process.

Is it that we were really inspired by an no one really knows, or is it something a lot of people know that we can give a different take on? Especially for instrumental music if you’re trying to take on something that has lyrics. Is the melody going to work as an instrumental song? All this kind of stuff comes into consideration. Sometimes my tendency is to do something that’s a little too obscure and not enough people know it to make it translate - Dave Weinthal well. THIS MONTH IN ROCK HISTORY 11 995544 19-year-old Elvis Presley quit his day job as a truck driver for the Crown Electric Company and signed a recording contract with Sun Records. He also inked a one year, personal management deal with Scotty Moore, who would receive 10% of all earnings from Presley’s live appearances. 11 995555 After three previous releases on Sun Records had only minor success, “Baby Let’s Play House” becomes Elvis Presley’s first single to reach the US national charts when it hits #5 on the Country And Western chart.

A landmark in music history is established on July 9th when Bill Haley’s “Rock Around The Clock” reaches number one on the Billboard chart. Many music historians will eventually acknowledge the song as a dividing line, separating Rock and Roll from everything that preceded it. 1199 5566 Dick Clark made his debut as host of Bandstand on Philadelphia TV station WFIL. He took over from Bob Horn, who had been charged with driving while intoxicated during a highly-publicized police crackdown. The show’s name would be changed to American Bandstand when it went to ABC-TV in 1957. Clark relinquished his hosting duties in 1989 to 26 yearold David Hirsch, but the program died within a matter of months. Still, it had been on the air for 37 years a record for a television variety show. After the June 30th trouble at Asbury Park, Bill Haley And His Comets are denied permission to play at the Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City. A city ordnance was passed that read: “Rock and roll music encouraged juvenile delinquency and inspired young females in lewd bathing suits to perform obscene dances on the city’s beaches.”

the next 30 years. 1199 6600 The Ventures “Walk Don’t Run” enters the US Pop chart and introduces the instrumental Surf sound to Rock ‘n’ Roll. The song will peak at #2 a month later. 11 996611 Motown Records releases The Supremes’ second single, “Buttered Popcorn” with “Who’s Loving You” on the flip side. The record, featuring Florence Ballard on lead vocal, would be a total flop.

Night”, and had the number one single in both countries with the LP’s title track. Oddly, the album issued in America had a different track listing than the one released in Great Britain. 11 996655 King Records releases “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” by James Brown. It would go on to sell over 2 million copies and receive the Grammy Award for best R&B recording. Bob Dylan, backed by The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, shocked the audience at the Newport Folk Festival with his new electric sound. The crowd booed him off the stage after three tunes. After being urged by Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary) to return to the stage and go acoustic, Dylan sang two songs to the now-silent audience - “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” and “Mr. Tambourine Man”. 11 9966 77 Jimi Hendrix either quit or was fired as the opening act for the Monkees’ US tour after only five days. Mickey Dolenz later recalled, “Jimi would amble out onto the stage, fire up the amps and break out into ‘Purple Haze’ and the kids in the audience would instantly drown him out with ‘We want Daaavy!’ God, was it embarrassing.” Hendix’s replacement was Vanilla Fudge.

119966 22 The Rolling Stones played their first concert at the Marquee club in London. Their line-up consisted of lead vocalist Mick Jagger, guitarists Keith Richards and Brian Jones, Dick Taylor on bass, pianist Ian Stewart 1199 6699 and Mick Avory, later of The Kinks, US consumer advocate Ralph Nader on drums. Avory and Taylor would issued a warning that loud Rock be replaced by Tony Chapman on drums and Bill Wyman on bass. Chapman didn’t work out and drummer Charlie Watts completed the Stones’ line-up in January 1963.

119966 33 Two weeks after being released, The Surfaris’ classic surf tune “Wipe Out” cracks the Billboard Hot 100 on its way to number two. The song was recorded as a “filler” in just two takes, but would stay in the Top 40 for ten weeks and become one of the most popular instrumentals in Rock ‘n’ Roll history. 11 9966 44 The film A Hard Day’s Night premieres in The Beatles’ hometown of Liverpool. Hundreds of thousands line the streets for a parade from the airport to the city center. The film was shot in black and white with a budget of only 200,000 pounds ($500.000) and took just seven weeks to complete. Reviews were mostly positive and the movie went on to earn over eleven million dollars.

music threatened to produce a nation of hearing-impaired people. The Rolling Stones original lead guitarist Brian Jones was found dead in his swimming pool, just three weeks after he was kicked out of the band. The official cause was recorded as “death by misadventure.” Reports say that Jones had sunk into substance abuse and he was frequently strung out on barbiturates, L.S.D. and alcohol and was no longer able to function as a musician. After being released just three weeks earlier, the futuristic ballad “In The Year 2525” was Billboard’s number one song. After getting a lot of requests to sing the song that they included in their live act, Denny Zager and Rick Evans had invested just $500 to press 1000 copies of the tune. After a Texas radio station added it their play list, RCA signed the duo, but the record would prove to be their only US chart entry. It did however stay at #1 in the US for 6 weeks, which was longer than any other song that year and earned it the distinction of #1 record of the year 1969. 1199 7700 The Carpenters “Close To You” topped the Billboard Pop chart and became the first of twenty US Top 40 hits for the brother and sister team. The song itself had been written in 1963 by Hal David and Burt Bacharach and was first offered to Herb Alpert, who said he didn’t feel comfortable singing ‘so they sprin-

The effort would reach #7 on the Billboard chart. 11 9977 33 David Bowie ends a 60-date tour with a show at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, England. Just before the encore, he shocks the crowd by saying, “This night shall always be special in my memory. Not only is it the last show of my British tour... but it is the last show I will ever do.” He disbanded his backing group, The Spiders From Mars, and went to Paris to record a solo album. Bowie’s retirement was short-lived however. Less than a year later, he was back on stage in the US with the Diamond Dogs tour. 11 997744 The Hues Corporation had the top tune in the US with “Rock The Boat”. The song features a lead vocal by Fleming Williams, who left the group shortly after the song was recorded. 32-yea-old Cass Elliot, a one-time member of The Mamas And Papas, died in London following an appearance at the Palladium. A postmortem the following day said that she died as a result of choking on a sandwich and from inhaling her own vomit. It’s later revealed that she suffered a heart attack. Her biggest solo hit was 1968’s “Dream a Little Dream of Me”, which reached number 12 and was actually backed by the rest of The Mamas And Papas. Cass Elliot’s body was cremated and her ashes were buried in Maryland.

119977 99 Van McCoy, who scored a number one Disco hit called “Do The Hustle”, died of a heart attack at the age of 39. He had worked for several record labels throughout the 1960s and produced The Shirelles, Gladys Knight And The Pips and The Stylistics. Minnie Riperton, who had scored a 1975 smash with a song called “Lovin’ You”, died of cancer at the age of 31. She had also been a member of Wonderlove, a backup group for Stevie Wonder. 1199 8800 Billy Joel had the best selling single in America with “It’s Still Rock And Roll To Me”, a number he wrote in the back of a car on the way to a recording session. The lyrics are sung from the prospective of a manager and an artist, arguing about remaining hip for the younger crowd vs. staying the course and letting the music speak for itself. The song would go on to be certified Platinum by the RIAA.
