Compassionate Conservatism I had a troubling revelation recently... and I don’t know what to think about it. I caught myself admiring Glenn Beck. I typically write Beck off as a typical right-wing blowhard. There have been times when I’ve been fairly certain that he is certifiably deranged. But then the Beckster threw me a curveball. He showed some – dare I say it? – humanity... ...Californians have thrown rocks at buses full of refugee children from south of the border. (I refuse to call children “illegal immigrants” when they are sent to our country unaccompanied because their parents fear for their lives.) Texas Governor Rick Perry, ever the bastion of compassion, deployed his state’s national guard to help repel the onslaught of diminutive invaders. What did Glenn Beck do? He got on a bus with $2 million in aid, toured the border and its impromptu “detention

centers” himself, distributed food and supplies, and helped cook for the refugees. Conversely, fellow conservative bubblehead Sean Hannity strapped on an assault rifle when he toured the border with Perry and several armed militia types... ...I’m not going to pretend that border security is a simple issue. I’m not going to say that unlimited, undocumented immigration is a good thing. But once those 50,000+ kids are in our country, they deserve our compassion. Conservative radio host Howard Hewitt also came down on the right (as opposed to right-wing) side of the issue: “Right now the country ought to act to end the humanitarian crisis of tens of thousands of what are, in effect, orphans and strangers in our land,” Hewitt wrote. “The very young among them should find ‘forever families’ right here, right now. They should become Americans.”

If I Had A Hammer Of Justice Remembering a melody so reminiscent of a time long ago where the sun shown brightly and the storm clouds of despair were always off in the distance keeps replaying in the memories that I hold dear. It was Peter, Paul and Mary's rendition of this song that stills stands the test of time. If I actually had the hammer of justice I'd really start hammering out all the injustices that has befallen all over this country. But, it would take an awfully big hammer though. It is the connotation that resonates the true meaning of these lyrics. For the past 40 years or so this great nation of ours has some how managed to stray away from the ideologies and the principals of Liberty, Justice, Education and Morality. When Peter, Paul and Mary first recorded this song the trade winds of unrest were already blowing across our land. The United States had already started down a path where the deterioration of those hallowed

have avoided the current mess this nation faces today. But, no we didn't heed those words. Instead leaders of industry and government officials continued their onslaught against the rational of peace, harmony, and good will toward all. Maybe not a conscious effort but very subtle in a posturing of policies shifting ideologies to where influences of social change kept occurring.

decay. With increasing resentment in the involvement in Vietnam was the one factor that triggered a whole generation to rise up and protest against what our corporate world and even our own government has and still is doing to the majority of Americans. It is through these songs portray the injustices and inequality that was and still is so rampant.

Of all the great folk songs that came out of the 60's these two probably were the most influential in shaping a whole generation. It was these two songs that describe just how far we as a society has strayed off the course that was set by our founding fathers. Even back in the 60's the beginning of the social unrest of When we take into account what the Vietnam era our society was really is being said when this becoming a cataclysm for moral song was first performed and had we as a nation actually understood what was really happening even back 50 years ago just maybe the United States could

We always have to remind ourselves that the social unrest of the 1960's gave way to the great ballads that emphasize just how the nations priorities have become so corrupted. Timeless lyrics that continue to showcase how each generation where the events of each respective time are almost identical. When will we ever learn.

principals was just beginning. When Pete Seeger and Lee Hays first wrote this song as a way to remind us that turbulent times of even back in the sixties they didn't realize things haven't changed that much at all. Different set of circumstances though, but turbulent and chaotic events still play a very dominant role in our society today. It took the folk group of Peter, Paul and Marry to fully express and emphasize what the meaning behind not only this song but others as well that play into the lives of all of us. Another such ballad "Blowing In The Wind" again portrays that our society still is being swept up into the chaos that continues to this very day.

3 THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR WHEN TAKING OUT CASH LOANS In recent years, cash loans have been widely criticised, but they are still extensively used. There are several reasons for their high demand. These include their speed, flexibility and ease of use. At the same time, you have to be extra careful when using them. Pay close attention to the following factors to ensure that you will be able to repay the borrowed amount comfortably. IInntteerree sstt RRaattee CCaallccuu llaattiioonn In most cases, the quoted interest rates on cash loans are calculated per day. This is because they are actually charged per day. For comparison, the rates on conventional loans are charged per year.

interest rate as low as 2% or sometimes even as low as 1.6%. But since it is charged daily, the total interest amount will be considerable. If you take out $100 for 30 days at 2% daily rate, the interest charge will be $60. The good news is that lenders are legally required to quote the annual percentage rate which you have to pay. In most cases, it is between 500% and 700%, but it could be lower or higher. It could go well over 1000%. Your best bet is to do simple calculations like the one above to see how much you will have to pay back unless the calculations have been done for you by the lender. FFeeeess aanndd TTaaxxeess

loans charged fixed initiation and administration fees which are presented in dollar amounts. These can be high or low, but the good thing is that they are straightforward to understand and you can easily add them to the total loan cost. A problem can arise when these fees are presented as percentages of the borrowed amount. Things can become particularly complicated when tax is also charged as a percentage of this amount. It is also possible for the lender to charge a higher fee for the extra loan amount above a set threshold. If the charges are not calculated for you, you should ask for precise directions to that you can calculate them yourself. RRee ppaayym meenntt M Meetthh oodd

Traditionally, lenders have required borrowers to write them a check for the principal amount plus interest and fee charges. Now more lenders prefer to use a direct debit order so that they can withdraw the due amount directly from the borrower's account. In any case, the payment will be automatic so you will not have any flexibility when the due date comes. If you find the loan difficult to repay, you should contact the lender in advance. You are now better prepared for using cash loans. Take advantage of super fast and reliable online Cash Loans in New Zealand. Get out of financial emergencies easily and quickly.

America, Land of the Free, Home of the Dependent With the Fourth of July in our rear view mirror there's only one question left to ask about the date. Why exactly do we as a generation celebrate our independence when we as people, and nation, are one of the most dependent in the entire world? Before you make the statement about how we are celebrating our independence from England and all that jazz, I get that. But how many of us as Americans actually celebrate for that reason? I sure as hell don't. If we don't celebrate for that reason then what reason do we celebrate for? Our independence from our parents as we head off

to college? Our independence when we finally pass our drivers test and receive the best piece of plastic we will ever receive that is a driver's license. We as a nation are one of the most dependent nations in the entire world. We depend on other nations for resources such as oil, cars, and even the clothes that are on our backs. When we are not depending on other nations for resources we are dependent on others such as family, friends, husbands, and wives. "We would be nothing without them" is a key way of people expressing

ENIGMA

their dependency on others; I know I am guilty of this because it's just a true statement. Now we wouldn't actually be nothing or cease to exist without our family and friends but without them surrounding us we'd be the one thing every American doesn't want to be, lonely. Loneliness has been shown to be one of the worst fears of the human race, whether it be from a social companion or an animal. Or even when it is loneliness from the idea of religion that there is something out there that has made us, and cares about us. Being dependent on others isn't completely a bad thing, some view it as strength to be able to ask for help, while others think of it as a sign of weakness that you can't do anything on your own. Yet, as Americans we have been asking for help for quite sometime. You wouldn't be able to drive your luxury or non luxury cars without other nations making them for us, or you wouldn't be able to wear your favorite pair of jeans that you love so much. Asking for help is a necessity, but when you constantly keep asking, instead of learning to do it yourself and being able to produce it without an ounce of help, that's where it becomes a problem.

father. It's ourselves. We expect ourselves to succeed in life, get that dream job, and start a family or whatever we set as goals in our lives. Those personal goals you set when setting a diet, or academic wise, you are dependent on yourself to reach those and yourself only. Being dependent on ourselves is a burden and stressful in every way possible. When we expect a certain outcome from a test or job and it doesn't happen in our favor, what's the first thing you do? Beat yourself up about it? Blame others besides yourself? No, we are dependent on ourselves to get back up and do it again and again until we do it the right way. At least in a picture perfect world we would do that.

The main thing that we are dependent on isn't any other nation, best friend, mother or

Some may think this piece is unAmerican and how could any civilian view their country like this, but in all honesty you know what you just read is the truth. His server, Jin Kuo, informed him that finding the bug in his food was “completely normal.” To show that she meant what she said, the 39-year-old snatched up the roach and swallowed it whole. Thanks to a customer who picked up a cellphone, the entire incident was captured on camera. In the video, Kuo can reportedly be heard saying, “No matter which restaurant

Harp reportedly told the pizzeria that his name was “Captain Wilson,” one of the officers who helped arrest him. He denies ordering the pizzas. “I’m wrongfully accused on this here. They’ve charged me with two felonies over this pizza deal because I had my phone inside the holding cell,” Harp told WKYT. “There was about 10 people who probably used the phone, so it’s hard to say. Like I said, I never heard anyone say a word about Domino’s pizzas. Any of it.” Thanks to the pizza prank, Harp is facing additional charges of theft of identity, theft by deception and impersonating a police officer. He plans on fighting the matter in court. SAN FRANCISOCO, CA. - Police say a drunk man at San Francisco International Airport posed as a TSA agent and patted down two women in a screening area. The 53year-old was a ticketed passenger who had passed

through a security checkpoint and began drinking at an airport lounge. After a few hours, he approached a female traveler and convinced her to go into a private booth with him. The man somehow obtained plastic blue gloves, and he looked the part of a TSA agent because he was wearing khaki pants and a blue polo shirt. Officers said it is unclear what exactly happened inside the private booth but they think he may have groped the woman. TSA agents later spotted the man as he took another unsuspecting female into the booth. They confronted and detained him until police arrived. Somebody needs to give this guy a job. If he can talk not one but two women into letting him feel them up, and all after he drank 5 or 6 Manhattans, that is a skill that need to be put to productive use. Maybe the TSA should have drinks at every checkpoint. Might make everyone relax and things run much smoother. He was arrested for public drunkenness but may face additional

SEATTLE (UPI) - Even if you “ain’t afraid of no ghost,” you may want to be wary of “meth rampages.” A Seattle couple called police after they returned to their condo and discovered that it looked like a scene from Paranormal Activity. The place was completely trashed and their mail and clothing had been strewn throughout the home. The unknown perpetrator had also “smeared lotion on a door handle, removed the inner soles from all of their shoes, screwed a single screw into a piece of scrap wood and placed an upside-down can of paint on top of their toilet.” After a purse with a 27-year-old woman’s ID card was found, Seattle Police Department officers were called to the scene. The woman was nowhere to be found, so they departed. Police returned after the couple called them back to the scene when they started hearing noises from under the bed. The mystery woman appeared “to be having a panic attack.” According to

FREMONT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (UPI) - A Michigan woman who tried to use a shotgun to “make a point” during a family argument ended up shooting herself in the face. After grabbing the gun, the Fremont Township woman slammed its butt-end onto the floor, causing the gun to go off and fire into her face. When police responded after receiving reports of a gunshot victim, they found the 51year-old with a facial wound. She reportedly told officers that she wanted to use the firearm to “make a point.” The woman was taken to St. Mary’s of Michigan in Saginaw and she is expected to make a full recovery. Michigan police will continue to investigate the incident, but no charges have been filed at this time.

CRAIG SHOEMAKER

CRAIG SHOEMAKER IS A MODERN DAY RENAISSANCE MAN. BEST KNOWN FOR HIS ENGAGING, RELATABLE STANDUP AND HIS ICONIC BARITONE-VOICED CHARACTER THE LOVEMASTER, CRAIG IS FAR MORE THAN THE JOKES HE TELLS ON STAGE. HE HAS SHOT MULTIPLE STAND-UP SPECIALS FOR TV, STARRED IN NUMEROUS FILMS, WRITTEN TWO CHILDREN’S BOOKS, PERFORMED FOR FOUR US PRESIDENTS, INVENTED ON HOLD ADVERTISING, AND HAS HIS DOCTORATE AND IS AN ORDAINED MINISTER.

SEPTEMBER 5-7

ROB SCHNEIDER

HIS COMBINATION OF SELF-DEPRECATING HUMOR AND GOOFBALL ANTICS EARNED HIM RAVE REVIEWS, AND HE WAS SOON OPENING FOR THE LIKES OF JAY LENO AND JERRY SEINFELD. SCHNEIDER GOT HIS BIG BREAK IN 1990, WHEN SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE PRODUCER LORNE MICHAELS HIRED HIM ON AS A WRITER FOR THE SHOW. SOON, HE WAS PERFORMING HIS OWN MATERIAL AND WAS A CAST REGULAR UNTIL 1994 WHEN HE LEFT TO PURSUE HIS FILM CAREER.

Earth. In need of their help, the four friends come together to protect the alien and help him find his way home. This journey, full of wonder and adventure, is their story, and their secret. Edge of Tomorrow The story unfolds in a near future in which a hive-like alien race, called Mimics, have hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, shredding great cities to rubble and leaving millions of human casualties in their wake. No army in the world can match the speed, brutality or seeming prescience of the weaponized Mimic fighters or their telepathic commanders. But now the world’s armies have joined forces for a last stand offensive against the alien horde, with no second chances. The Fault In Our Stars PG-13 Hazel and Gus are two extraordinary teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them — and us – on an unforgettable journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous, given that they met and fell in love at a cancer support group. How To Train Your Dragon 2 PG It’s been five years since Hiccup and Toothless successfully united dragons and vikings on the island of Berk. While Astrid, Snoutlout and the rest of the gang are challenging each other to dragon races (the island’s new favorite contact sport), the now inseparable pair journey through the skies, charting unmapped territories and exploring new worlds. When one of their adventures leads to the discovery of a secret ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace. Now, Hiccup and Toothless must unite to stand up for what they believe while recognizing that only together do they have the power to change the future of both men and dragons. Maleficent PG A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal-an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom-and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well. Persecuted PG-13 John Luther was the last obstacle in the way of sweeping religious reform. When a Senator frames Luther for the murder of an innocent teenage girl, an unprecedented era of persecution is

unleashed. An evangelist turned fugitive, Luther’s mission brings him faceto-face with the coming storm of persecution that will threaten the entire Christian community in America.

A married writer and a single girl sadistically toy with each other in Paris, a corporate thief on the run from the law meets a beautiful gypsy woman in Rome and a failed soap star wages a custody battle for the son she endangered in New York.

It seems like a great idea – until they discover that their most private video is no longer private. With their reputations on the line, they know they’re just one click away from being laid bare to the world... but as their race to reclaim their video leads to a night they’ll never forget, they’ll find that their video will expose even more than they bargained for. She’s totaled her clunker car, gotten fired from her thankless job at a greasy burger joint, and instead of finding comfort at home, finds her husband getting comfortable with the neighbor in her own house. It’s time to take her boom box and book it. The bad news is she’s broke and without wheels. The worse news is her grandma, Pearl, is her only option — with a car, cash, and an itch to see Niagara Falls. Not exactly the escape Tammy had in mind. Sometimes the Best Surpirses Come In Small Packages Sometimes the biggest surprises come in the smallest packages. This was true the other night at Chastain Park Amphitheatre. A three-headed monster bill took over the park and the opening act of three had everyone gushing and remembering why they were a pretty big deal a few years ago.

with allergies he told the crowd as his voice wasn’t up to par that night. He struggled at times to hit notes and actually seemed a little frustrated at times. Often we are our own worst critic. For the most part it was a rocking set. Of course the whole “American Idol” thing sometimes is something beyond my comprehension but Daughtry as a whole was a really nice set.

for tour supremacy. The trio is in a midst of a summer festival tour and judging by the crowd’s reaction things are getting interesting.

Headlining was the Goo Goo Dolls, the main reason people were there. The crowd was fired up to see Johnny and Robby as they hit the mainstage with the rest of the band. The band has been charting on radio and their songs have been part of countless soundtracks.

Heavyweight favorites, the Goo Goo’s are still leading the pack, but there’s a major shakeup in who follows them. Lo and behold the band that had everyone talking was Plain White T’s.

Not willing to rest on their laurels and relive past glory the band played a set complete with the classic hits “Ride” and “Iris” for example but introduced (to some) newer songs.

Their claim to fame is a single from 2007, “Hey There Delilah” during the spring and summer and was every guy’s mixtape when on a date. The loving ballad was a sharp contrast to the rest of the band’s edgier stuff. They were like that year’s Extreme (“More Than Words”). Sara Bareilles - More Than Just A Pretty Face It was certainly “girls night out” as Sara Bareilles performed at Chastain Park Amphitheatre in Atlanta. Not knowing what to expect and thinking of her as a girly girl singer I was prepared for the worst. Would this be another angst filled night, or a night of unrequited love songs and female empowerment? To my surprise it was a funky fun little show. While she usually is behind a piano on stage she broke free from her bench and moved around, danced a little, gestured and smiled a lot and looked like she was having a grand time. I expected this show to have as much energy as a doctor’s wait-

The Doobie Brothers And Frampton Come Alive For a majority of the folks at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park, they got to listen to artists and songs that were part of the soundtrack of their youth. The Doobie Brothers

and Peter Frampton brought back many pleasant memories and reminded any doubters why they’ve sold so many records (yes, records) and why it was worth the trip to Alpharetta, GA to see them performed live.

The former Humble Pie guitarist was trying to grab traction on a solo career when he released a live album – or the definitive live album.

The tour featuring two classic rock heavyweights is a coheadlining gig for the two. Depending where they are determines who goes first – or perhaps just a flip of the coin. Both were firing from a heavy arsenal of radio and albums hits, many in which made the 1970s bearable despite what was going on around them (Vietnam,

“Frampton Comes Alive” for the longest time was the biggest selling album of all time and may very well be the best selling live album of all time. It stayed on the charts forever and familiarized everyone with a device called the “squawk box”. His red mane of hair caused girls to swoon and guys get jealous. After disbanding or going silent for a few years in the 1980s the original lineup got back together and recorded a new album featuring their first hit single in over five years, “The Doctor”. After the initial reunion shows and album the band decided to stay together and have toured regularly or semi-regularly since 1989.

Opening the show for The Doobies and Frampton was a 17-year-old guitar virtuoso named Matthew Curry. Mixing southern rock, British blues and a tinge of psychedelia. Despite his youth he wasn’t the least bit intimidated performing with classic rock royalty, in fact he seemed the relish in the moment. Those in attendance may have seen the genesis of the newest guitar god.

The Doobie’s started off the night strong with “Jesus Is Just Alright” and followed it quickly with “Rockin’ Down the Highway”. They didn’t bother much with the McDonald era except for “Takin’ It To the Streets”. Ray LaMontagne Takes Chances With New Material Ray LaMontagne played to a mixed reaction the other night at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park. Touring on a new album that was released in April, his new material has thrown loyal fans for quite the loop. I think it’s just a matter of understanding the singer/songwriter’s new twist. The album Supernova was produced by The Black Key’s Dan Auerbach and instead of being more in the Americana singer/songwriter genre many are familiar with, LaMontagne takes a few risks

here bordering on rock and psychedelia. It was like Todd Rundgren meets early Aerosmith kind of sound and feel to it. He pulled it off well, actually and may have opened himself up to a new legion of followers who are sick of the singer/songwriter path a lot of today’s solo artists like to take. Of course his hardcore fans are thrown a little off guard, but one can’t blame the man for taking a risk or two. It’s kind of reminiscent of when Bob Dylan did the electric set in 1965 at the Newport Folk Festival. Of course the crowd ENIGMA
