From the Publisher’s Notebook City, county, state, and even federal governments have lost touch with the real world. They never stop amazing me. Why in the hell are they tearing up Miller Park? I have a novel idea for what they could have done with the money—use it to build a homeless shelter to help people get back on their feet. How is this for a plan: if a homeless person or family can pass an addiction test – if they’re not on drugs or alcohol – they can qualify for help. They can move in, get food, some clean clothes, and help getting a job. I notice where Amazon is needing help to the point of running ads on TV. Could the people in the shelter be employed there? The city could provide a bus to take the people to and from work. The money they make—or a large part of it – could be put into an account for them until they make enough to get on their feet. Give them a new chance. We didn’t need a new Miller Park. ENIGMA

Calls For The Chief (With No Luck) I was surprised a few Saturdays ago to see an article in the Chattanoogs Times Free Press newspaper describing a traffic stop of one of Chattanooga’s City Council members. The article described events that occurred on June 24th, 2017. Why was this incident newsworthy? Towards the end of the incident Coonrod makes references about calling then Chattanooga Police Chief Fred Fletcher. Coonrod then tries to get the Officer to call Chief Fletcher. The officer refuses even after Coonrod tells her, “I’m asking you as a council representative to get in touch with Chief Fletcher.” When the officer, Tiffany Lentz tells her she cannot do that Coonrod asks her “Are you sure about that?” Officer Lentz tells her, “I’m sure.” Good Job Officer Lentz. This obvious act of coercion/ intimidation was handled correctly and professionally in my opinion as a 30-year plus veteran of Law Enforcement. Chief Fletcher would comment later in a written statement, “I am very proud of the professional way a young officer responded to a difficult and intim-

That’s almost five months expired. Ms. Coonrod I don’t recommend you drive in Benton. In the TFP article Coonrod is quoted as saying “even though I hold elected office,

A man was caught on camera riding a Chicago city bus “like a boss” by climbing on top of the vehicle and smoking a cigarette. Lloyd Anthony Peters said he was near the Chicago Transit Authority bus stop at Fullerton and Sheffield when a man asked him for a cigarette. “I gave him one,” Peters said. He said the man then asked if he could swipe his Ventra card to get on the bus. “I tell him I can’t do that, because he told me he was going

westbound, and I couldn’t cross the street, because I had crutches and a cast,” Peters said. “He literally just said eff it, and he climbed on top of the bus, and lit the cigarette, and just went straight down Fullerton like a boss.” Peters posted a photo and a video of the unusual sight to Facebook. “He was incredibly athletic to get up there so fast and without any issues,” Peters said. “I feel blown away by it, to be quite honest,” he said. “I’ve seen some people do some crazy things. people made such a big deal with what she did. The woman wrote on Facebook: “I made brownies for my school bake sale that had breast milk in them. I didn’t have time to run to the store, and didn’t think it was a big deal. Some of those kids could use the nutrition to be honest.” The post quickly went viral, and received hundreds of angry responses. The woman was criticized for putting other children at risk of serious infectious diseases,

which could be transferred through breast milk. One woman compared this mother’s actions with mixing urine in lemonade. “It’s like that one time I made lemonade with my urine because I ran out of water and didn’t feel like going to the store to get more.” Another angry poster wrote, “I’d punch this b***h right in the throat for this s**t. I don’t care if the possible harmful diseases baked out. This psycho needs to be slapped.” I think that says it all. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said a Texas company’s coffee is being recalled after customers got a rise from an ingredient with a Viagra-like effect. The announcement said Bestherbs Coffee LLC, based in Grand Prairie, is voluntarily recalling bags of java labeled “New of Kopi Jantan Tradisional Herbs Coffee” after an FDA analysis detected the presence of desmethyl carbodenafil, a chemical similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. The FDA said the undeclared compound could interact with nitrates in some prescription drugs, lowering blood pressure to dangerous levels. The notice said the coffee was marketed as a “male enhancement” product, but could pose risks to men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease. The FDA said the coffee also contained undeclared milk. A South Florida family is perplexed after recently waking up to a loud thud, only to find that the mysterious sound was several packages of frozen Italian sausage. “It was like thunder, and it awakened me out of a sleep,” Travis Adair said. “We got up, found two packages of sausage on our side yard, and then we were like, ‘OK, well, we got to go on the roof and check and see if we find more of this

stuff,’” Austin Adair said. Sure enough, there were three more packages of Italian pork sausage. A total of 15 pounds of Italian sausage was found in bags marked William Land Service, a land-clearing company in Alabama. The homeowners were baffled about how the sausage ended up on their roof, so their son, Austin Adair, called the company. “I called them and the guy had no idea what I was talking about and probably thought I was crazy,” Austin Adair said. He even sent them pictures of the sausage but has yet to hear back. “I would love to know what really happened, because it’s just so, so odd,” Jennie Adair said. Hopefully the family decides to have a barbecue. It should be cheap because the sausage is on the house.

Last week a snake knocked out power to 4,790 residents in South Carolina after it slithered into the wrong section of a electrical substation. But that is small potatoes compared to the baboon who just blacked out 50,000 customers. ZESCO, Zambia’s electricity producer and distributor, said a baboon tampered with high voltage machines at the Livingston station, causing about 50,000 customers to lose power. The company said employees investigating the outage found the baboon suffering from injuries related to the shock it received from the machines. The primate was turned over to the Zambia Wildlife Authority, which said the baboon was being treated in an Intensive Care Unit. “The lines the baboon was tampering with are extremely high voltage,” ZESCO spokesman Henry Kapata told local news. “You can see that it was electrocuted in so many ways but it has survived. Friends and Foes I don’t like Jeff Sessions. Well, I’ve never actually met the diminuitive Alabamian, but I think his murky racist history should have eliminated him from consideration as Attorney General. The one thing he did that showed some sense of moral compass was his decision to recuse himself from the investigations into possible connections between the Trump presidential campaign and various Russian government and business contacts… ...That recusal is the one move Sessions made that has led to the president’s public rebukes and Twitter insults. Trump seems to think that Sessions should have ruled himself out of contention for the A.G. job, despite not knowing the full

extent of the Trump/Russia investigation. Keep in mind that Sessions was the first U.S. senator to endorse Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign. The president has turned on Sessions in a brutal way, If the (temporarily?) current Attorney General wasn’t such a well-documented scumbag, I’d almost feel sorry for him… ...I don’t feel sorry for Jared Kushner. He looks like a mutant between a stone-faced moron and an older version of Damien from the “Omen” movies. The Juice is Loose or How to Get Away With Murder that in 1970 only won one game. Three seasons later he became the first running back to crack the 2,000-yard mark finishing with 2,003. Even more impressive is he did this when the season only lasted 14 games. That season he led the Bills to their first winning season since 1966.

OJ Simpson is being paroled. And people are cheering this and saying it’s about time. Imagine that. Oh yeah, I hate OJ Simpson. For the record in my personal opinion I believe Simpson got away with murder. It’s a shame that I hate him, but I felt betrayed by him, our justice system and many members of the public who successfully turned this into a race issue. As a kid I loved OJ Simpson. The former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Hall of Famer was a joy to watch playing football. Although my favorite team was the Miami Dolphins I took exception watching him play. At this time in the early ‘70s there was no one like him in the NFL. I was too young to see Jim kid and still do), so OJ was the first Brown or Gayle Sayers (although I truly electric ball runner I got to cried watching “Brian’s Song” as a see on Sundays growing up. black. Besides OJ there was Wilt Chamberlain, Walt Frazier, Hank Aaron and Lou Brock. The NFL team I hated the most and still do was the Steelers. I remember praying for Terry Bradshaw to get injured. And when he did Joe Gilliam took over. Gilliam was the third black quarterback of the Super Bowl era to start in the NFL. In fact, Gilliam won the starting job away from Bradshaw to begin the 1974 season but lost it four weeks into the season. I cheered like crazy for Gilliam - first, because I hated Bradshaw, and second because he was black and I thought a black quarterback was cool. Blacks in the media were to me always presented as being cool and funny – everyone from Jimmy Walker, Richard Pryor, Flip Wilson and so on. I was too young to comprehend racism, nor had my parents taken part in or spoke against anyone of any race or religion. I was a clean slate from that point. OJ was also the first black athlete to break the color barrier as a mainstream spokesman for everything from Dingo boots, Hertz Renta-Car, Royal Crown Cola, Schick, Foster Grant, Treesweet orange juice and Wilson Sporting Goods.

Add to that appearing in the blockbuster film “The Towering Inferno” he was able to break racial barriers and stereotypes – all by assumedly by being himself. He came across as a fun and affable commentator on Monday Night Football and later NBC adding to his charisma. And then of course there were his roles in the “Naked Gun” film series as Nordberg who often suffered at the hands of Leslie Nielson’s character. I loved OJ, you loved OJ, we all loved OJ. Of course when Simpson was playing in the NFL and after his playing career in the ‘80s media was a lot different than what it is now or even the mid ‘90s when public opinion changed about him. There was little known or published about most athletes and celebrities. Gossip was left to the National Enquirer and Star. Most people like me paid no attention to them and considered them akin to yellow journalism when in hindsight we might of should of paid closer attention. Of course I didn’t care what these guys did off the gridiron or off screen. As long as they entertained me I didn’t care. First with cable, the worldwide web and now social media the world is ruled

public opinion because apparently one of the detectives of the case, Mark Fuhrman had used a racial slur ten years prior and thus tainted a pretty much black and white case (no pun intended) because of emotion and political correctness. The irony of the case is during Simpson’s career other black athletes of the time held him in contempt because instead of standing up for black rights, he embraced the celebrity that came with being a successful and popular athlete and media star. Many including Jim Brown and Muhammed Ali saw him as betraying his race and the struggle black America was dealing with. Many thought he got what he deserved when he was originally arrested. Despite this claim by black activists against him, Simpson used the race card to change the tenor of the trial and divert everyone’s attention from whether he killed his ex-wife and her friend to attempting to make him appear a victim of racial profiling and discrimination. Of course as everyone knows after the circus that was his trial and I won’t go into deals as you can read and watch that on your own Simpson was found not guilty by a jury of his peers. The verdict split the country down color lines, as you would expect. But the not guilty verdict may have actually been a good thing in many ways. Los Angeles was still recovering from the 1992 riots after the police officers involved with the now famous Rodney King beating were found innocent on all charges as six days of riots took place as 55 people were killed and over 2,000 injured in the aftermath. You can draw your own conclusion from this and the not guilty ruling in the OJ case. Please note how I worded that – not guilty instead of innocent. In the aftermath of the circus trial of the century we as a country saw race relations as they really were. Everybody basically keeping their mouth shut on both sides unless it furthered an agenda and in most instances even then most of the hoping and hollering was coming from opposite sides of the spectrum. Depending on your opinion the outcome of the Simpson murder trial had two effects on race relations. It either magnified stereotypical or still practiced institutional racism or it sabotaged the healing that had taken place since the end of the Civil War in 1865.

And while Americans went back to their everyday lives in the aftermath a bad taste was still left in a lot of people’s mouths, most notably Ron Goldman’s family who sued Simpson in civil court over the murder of their son and won a $33.4 million settlement against Simpson – one that is still outstanding. This just went to show the world the hypocrisy of our legal system. OJ was found not guilty in criminal court but guilty in civil. Go figure. The spectacle of the case brought tabloid journalism into the mainstream. What before was considered fringe entertainment soon became an actual news source for the general public often taken as gospel when in the past it was often dismissed. And that of course brought made it profitable because everyone loves to gossip, hear gossip and in a way hope to fin others worse than themselves so they in turn feel better about themselves. Add to that the Internet – then in its infancy and how social media now true journalism has a black eye and indeed may be down for the count, as no one knows for sure who or what to believe. And while Simpson literally and figuratively got away with murder in 1995 karma paid him a visit 12 years later when he was arrested, charged and imprisoned for armed robbery of his own property and kidnapping. Found guilty he was given a 33-year sentence and no chance of parole for nine years. Many saw the sentence for this as a sort of “make good” or “revenge” for being found not guilty of the murder of his ex-wife and her companion. Perhaps so, but that is karma I guess. Each and everyone out there is free to come to whatever conclusion of his murder trial and the outcome Lo and behold now nine years later and Simpson, according to reports was a model prisoner will be released on October 1. At 70 years old there is no telling what will happen to him now that he has regained his freedom. If he is smart he will lay low. But in an era of social media and a man with a relatively large ego that has been well documented during his professional and personal life, there’s no telling. Who knows? Maybe he will finally be able to find the person who killed Nicole like he said he planned to do when he was acquitted back in 1995.

Rock Kihn Roll Will Never Die Greg Kihn Continues Doing What He Does Best - Rock and Roll Greg Kihn is one of theose guys in music that you want to sit around with and drink a beer. His music is infectious and timeless and when his band came out in the era of the real MTV they not only embraced it but left a lasting legacy with the

video for their Billboard number two hit, “Jeopardy”. It was so infectious that it garnered a parody by Weird Al Yankovic. But even before that maybe his most remembered and still loved song was his first radio hit, “The Break Up Song”. The veteran rock kihn roller has put out over 20 albums including the newly released ReKihndled that harkens back to the classic sound while sounding refreshing and new. Sammy’s and old buddy of mine and I ran into Sammy at charity event about half a year ago. I said, “Hey, I’m hitting the road. I got a new album coming out, yada, yada, but here’s my problem: my drummer can’t travel. So I got to find another guy to go out and do the gigs.” He says, “Why don’t you take my guy?” Sammy’s got Chickenfoot and, like, three or four projects going on right now. He said, “I’m not using him for the next year and a half, so why don’t you take Dave?” So, we started rehearsing with Dave Lauser on the drums and, man, it has been spectacular. The guy is like Keith Moon. He is really exciting. Our bass player is Robert Berry. He owns the studio we record in and he also produced

the album. You really cannot get a much tighter group than that. It was just a labor of love. It was very easy. You know, the first song that we recorded for the album was “Big Pink Flamingos” and you can kind of tell when you listen to it. We had a sense of humor and had fun with it and it just set the pace for the whole album. Most of the songs on the album were written very quickly. You know, all the really good songs get written in 15-20 minutes and most of the songs on the album were written very quickly. We didn’t belabor them. We recorded them in one or two takes and it was a lot of fun, man. I have to tell you, we were in the studio earlier this week and I’m already working on songs for the next album, which will probably be coming out about a year from now.

I don’t think I’ll ever run out of titles because once you hit that groove … matter of fact, we were talking the other day wondering what are we going to call the next one? We put this one out with the title Rekihndled, as in “I hope this rekihndles my career” but what are we going to call the next one, because we already have two songs recorded and I’m thinking maybe Kihnetic Ry, went to the Berklee College of Energy, Kihnescope, or Kihnology. I had a Rickenbacker twelve-string just like Jim McGuinn, a pair of them actually, and I had a pair of Vox Phantom twelve-string guitars that were kind of octagonal. They were really cool guitars. I liked them because when I first started playing on the twelve-string, skinnier [guitar] necks like the Rickenbacker I can’t fit my fingers in the frets because my fingers are like big ol’ Polish sausages and I can’t make an A chord. So, I switched over to the Vox and the Vox neck was like a quarter-inch wider than the Rickenbacker was and was much, much easier to play. It also had a real jingly-jangly sound that I can’t really describe. It’s kind of a Beatles sort of sound; you can’t mistake it. I use it on a ton of songs. I always lucked out because I would choose things to play in the songs that were real easy, since I’m

That’s still my favorite song. Of all the songs I’ve written, and there have been a lot of them, I love that one the most and I don’t know why. You know, it’s real easy to play live; it’s not hard to sing; it’s got that great guitar riff; and it’s a lot of fun to play live. I run into other musicians all the time and they all say, “Hey, I used to do ‘The Break Up Song’ in my high school band,” all these guys telling me they used to do that back in the day and I’m really proud of that. It shows that the song’s got legs to stick around for decades like that. Hopefully all three of my grandchildren will still be collecting mailbox money on that one.

The nice thing about it was we just played whatever we wanted to play. So every song was different, every album was different. We just followed our noses. I remember where I was when I found out “Jeopardy” was number one. I was at Custer’s Last Stand at the Little Bighorn. We were in the tour bus, we saw the exit, and we were like, “Let’s go there! We’ll check out the gift shop and stuff.” They had a great gift shop and, in the shop, there was a pay phone. This was before we had cell phones; it was all about pay phones then. We called the record company in L.A., just to see how it was going, and the guy was like, “You’re number one in ‘Radio and Records’”… it was number two in Billboard… “You guys just got to number one.” I’ll never forget what the guy said. It was the head of the record company. I think it was Elektra. He said, “You know what that means, son?” I said, “No, what does that mean?” “That means now we can make some real money!” I was seeing dollar signs.

There was more pressure but it was fun pressure. Suddenly we were on the road and we were opening for Journey. We went out there and did, like, two years straight opening for Journey and they were playing the biggest venues in the country like Madison Square Garden, the Meadowlands … you know, really big places. We’d always been a nightclub band, maybe playing for a thousand people or something. Suddenly we were playing for 20,000 people. I learned real quick how to make that concert experience more intimate and play it like it was a small club. You know what? We really got comfortable up there and, in no time, we mastered how to play the giant places. I mean we played GIANT

places. When we opened for the Stones, we played in the Seattle Kingdome and that was like 80,000 people a show for four shows. It was like, “Oh my God!” When I walked on stage, I had a little bit of butterflies because there were so many people. But I saw it and I was thinking, “I can’t wait to get out there and start playing. This is going to be a lot of fun.” I look back on my memories now and I had a ball. It was a lot of fun, whether we played with Journey or the Stones or Starship … whoever we played with, it was fun. I love playing big places. I love playing small places.

writing songs and putting together an album, the songs that write themselves are really the best ones. In my experience, that’s been all the hits like “Jeopardy” and “The Break Up Song” and songs like that, they just write themselves and were very easy. A lot of songs I really sweated over. I was working really hard on those lyrics and stuff; they’re the ones that didn’t even make the cut. So I learned a lot of valuable lessons about songwriting. Just let the song be what it wants and let it write itself.

Some of them I wrote completely by myself. Most of them were written with my son and Robert Berry; we were kind of like a songwriting group. What we would do is Ry would come up with like a guitar riff like “Pink Flamingos” and we would come into the studio. He’d show us the riff and we’d kick it around for a little while and something would occur. When he played “Pink Flamingos,” I just started singing “big pink flamingos.” I don’t know where it came from. It was floating in the air and I just snatched it out of the air. It was like channeling it. I remember thinking, “Gee, this is easier than I thought.” You know, when you’re

You know, I tell you, lately it’s been I get the idea – Ry or Robert will start playing a guitar riff – and it would just occur to me. “The Life I Got” was like that as well. I thought, “This song is writing itself.” The main lyric would just come to me out of the clear blue sky and once I had that, I’d whip out my notebook and start working on it. Nine times out of ten, you would just follow that first lyric wherever it was going to take you. It was easy to write the songs. As a songwriter, one of the bits of wisdom that I impart to other, younger songwriters is “Look… if it’s like pulling teeth, don’t do it. If it’s real easy, do that. Make sure that you have fun and that you are doing it organically. The more you have to work on a song only makes it thicker and further from the truth. The best approach is just to wing it, my friend. Wing it.”

reason it got so much airplay in that first year of MTV is because, as you pointed out, it was a concept video. It was a story, kind of like a mini-movie. I remember, back then, we had a band meeting with the director, Joe Dea, and we were kicking around ideas. He said, “Well, what are you into, Greg?” I said, “I don’t know. I like old horror movies – “Night of the Living Dead,” stuff like that. He goes, “That’s it! We’ll do a ‘Night of the Living Dead’ parody.” So we had the idea and it was really fun making that video because it was like a mini-movie. This was in the day when nobody was doing this. Everybody was doing basically live videos. We didn’t want to do that; we wanted something different. The reason that MTV jumped on it – and they played it in heavy rotation like every hour – was the fact that it was not a live video. Almost

As longtime fans no doubt know, Waters does not go about things in a small way. For those who have seen a show in this arena, most will agree the acoustics are less than to be desired. Thankfully, that wouldn’t be the case this evening. The trademark Floyd quad system worked to perfection overcoming any acoustic deficiencies inherent with the building. Even fans located in the nether region of the upper rows received the same aural pummeling as those lucky enough to be in the first few rows on the floor. Guitarist Dave Kilminster in particular, was absolutely superb in his role of David Gilmour. He effortlessly hit all of Gilmour’s notes, licks, phrasing and had the familiar guitar sound down to a tee. To my ultra-critical and sensitive ears, Kilminster was perfect. The two female backing singers, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig were also stellar. Their voices were dead-ringers for Clare Torry, the sensational vocalist on The Dark Side of the Moon. As a bonus, they both played admirable percussion instruments. A solid, if not obligatory version of “Money” (again, complete with cashier sound effects), flowed beautifully into “Us and Them,” just as it does on LP. This version was just as sumptuous. The vocal harmonies in the song’s climax sounded as if they were culled directly from original recording itself. Three new compositions Waters performed were blended in well with the old material. It was a refreshing change from his seeming dour attitude and indifference to the audiences during his latter days with Pink Floyd. Today you see a full-blown grayhaired superstar who seems happy with his place in musical history. He certainly has morphed away from the musician who felt compelled at one time to build ‘a wall’ between himself and the audience.

The price of admission to this magnum opus evening with Roger Waters has hefty. The prices ranged from $150 to $250 apiece for the floor and lower bowl seats. The upper balcony was $75. Stuff)” until my ears bled. NKOTB were everywhere and I held them in distain. While I was listening to The Cure and The Smithereens all these chicks around me were listening and watching NKOTB as were my friends looking to get laid. To my credit I only recognized two songs they played this night. And while I am older and yes, wiser I’ve kind of come to appreciate them. Not because of their music, but because they grew up and music has grown up although not so apparent by what I hear on the radio today. Today I can appreciate NKOTB for their part of pop culture history while remaining not a big fan of their music. The best part of the show as before it began and watching the crowds assemble to see the show. I remember the teenyboppers that used to listen to them and now 30 years later they are still in full force but older (and probably not wiser). Mature women were lined up acting like kids again as many dressed up. It didn’t matter to them they were going to be there come hell or high water. Women in wheelchairs and one lady in a Jazzy scooter and oxygen tank weren’t going to miss out of this night. And to NKOTB’s credit they delivered giving the screaming crowd their money’s worth. They sang, they danced in well-coordinated routines and literally set the stage on fire as they effortlessly switched vocal leads for over two dozen songs. The tour is called the Total Package Tour and with reason. In a package there is usually more than one item. On this night there were three. Before NKOTB took the stage Paula Abdul performed a nice short set. And while many may know her from “American Idol”, roughly 30 years ago she was charting a ton of times fighting with

NKOTB for positions on the Billboard charts. Between 1988 and 1991 she had six consecutive number one singles beginning with “Straight Up” and ending with “The Promise of A New Day”. Add to that two top ten singles including her first charting single “The Way That You Love Me” and another two top 40 singles. Abdul played a relatively short set being sandwiched between NKOTB and Boyz II Men. Her set was only six songs but they were songs everyone knew even the casual observer. Compared to the other two acts on the bill, Abdul’s set was as much performance art as it was vocals. The famed choreographer

And while I was not very familiar with many of their songs I may have been most impressed by their set and for a unique reason. During their last song, “End of the Road” where I was standing, a female security guard began to tear up. As tears started to roll down her eyes she frantically waved her hands in front of her face and started to repeating, “I’m trying to hold it together.” She ten told us that the song reminded her of her brother who died and how they used to love to listen to it. Anytime a song, poem or written word can evoke an emotion of any kind beside distain is a great thing and deserves a lot of respect. And while I admittedly knew little of
