Who Will Blow the Whistle? Five years ago, I began to closely examine a series of stories that were enigmatic, compelling and mysterious as the day they first broke around the world.

I was well placed, with all of the necessary skills and experience. I knew how to recognise a great story, and more importantly an even greater cover-up, when it crossed my path.

con perpetually sending its signal in the hope that some day, someone, might hear and do something. All of these stories life-changing events at the time they happened. Significant stories, missing one vital ingredient: the complete truth. They were stories that shared something very much in common. A disaster closely followed by a pathetically, inadequate official investigation. A seemingly diligent and competent group of people in authority who appeared to be following a line of inquiry that left no stone unturned, but in reality nothing could be further from the truth. Experts that had no real interest in turning over every clue, acting on statements from eyewitnesses and conducting the necessary forensic examinations. Their agenda was to completely disregard the evidence and, after an appropriate amount of time, reach a convenient conclusion that these were simple, easily explained accidents or incidents. In each case, the authorities did their best to make it appear that way but appearances can be deceiving and these were no accidents. Sadly, for the most part, their conclusions were supported by an apathetic media, which couldn't be bothered wading through the detail and asking the right questions.

Over the years I collected many great stories but five of them were standouts for me. All of these stories possessed a sense of injustice so strong, it was like a distress bea-

As an investigative journalist, I'd been involved in uncovering new information about other seminal events in history like the bombing of the Greenpeace protest ship, the Rainbow Warrior, in Auckland Harbour. I am proud of the fact that when I was the Executive Producer of a Primetime long format Current Affairs television show in New Zealand, we managed to track down and confront the French secret service agent who placed the bomb on the hull of the yacht, which killed photographer Fernando Pereira. He and the Greenpeace crew were preparing to embark on a peaceful, protest voyage to the French nuclear testing site in Mururoa Atoll in the Pacific. The bombing of the Rainbow Warrior was an act of State sponsored terrorism by the French Government.

pers has almost disappeared. Newspaper proprietors are no longer willing to invest in the luxury of a dedicated team of journalists, with a mandate to do the necessary digging to hold Governments and authorities to account and expose wrongdoing. I don't know why this has happened. It could be a reflection of the general decline in newspaper readership and revenue. It could be antipathy and ignorance. Whatever the reason it has left us all very vulnerable. Newspapers like Rupert Murdoch's now defunct tabloid rag, the British News of the World, did the cause of investigative journalism a great disservice when it orchestrated a tawdry scandal that involved the illegal interception of the private telephone conversations of high profile celebrities. It was lazy journalism that simply provided the high moral ground for critics to attack press freedom, while at the same time putting legitimate and appropriate investigative reporting under pressure. The public, quite rightly, took the view that the media couldn't be trusted. It's been left to controversial organisations like Wikileaks and its charismatic Australian founder, Julian Assange, to fill the vacuum and give real meaning to the term freedom of information. The quantity and quality of leaked revelations, embarrassing to Governments and leaders all over

the world, enabled Wikileaks to morph itself into a global news corporation and do the job that newspapers used to do by keeping the bastards honest. But information is power and powerful Governments like the Obama Administration were determined to choke the Wikileaks source of supply. The current United States' Government attitude to whistleblowing has been a complete revelation and not in a good way. In 2008, the then Presidential candidate, Barack Obama, ran on a platform praising whistle-blowers as people of courage and patriotism. His campaign document described them as the watchdogs, alerting the public when Governments abuse their authority. Contrast that attitude with how the Obama led U.S. Government very recently dealt to a lowly ranked American Army intelligence analyst called Bradley Manning who was facing the death penalty or 136 years in prison for leaking embarrassing Government information. One of Bradley Manning's leaks was a video captured by the on board camera in one of the American Army's Apache attack helicopters. The video and audio reveals the crew laughing as they slaughtered a group of innocent civilians in Iraq that included a Reuters' cameraman and three small children. Bradley Manning was sentenced to 35 years imprisonment for his crime. An official Army investigation concluded that

the Apache helicopter crew had followed accepted rules of engagement. I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions on guilt or innocence. Another whistle-blower, Edward Snowden, who worked for the American National Security Agency, which is like the CIA, is now America's most wanted man. One of his crimes was to tell his fellow American citizens that they were being spied on by his employer the United States Government even though they had committed no crime. Snowden, found refuge in Vladimir Putin's Russia, but he will be forever looking over his shoulder or waiting for that knock on the door. Even Julian Assange is a refugee, permanently holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy in London subject to arrest and deportation the minute he steps outside. It isn't hard to figure out what is going on here. The authorities want whistleblowers to become an endangered species. They want to deliver the maximum possible deterrence to anyone who might be contemplating following in Manning or Snowden's footsteps. It's a very sad development for anyone who values, freedom, democracy and public accountability. So it is against this backdrop that I have conducted my own re-investigation of what I wouldn't hesitate in calling five of the world's biggest crimes. The British Paget Inquiry numbering 1000 pages on the investigation of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales was pretty much a non-event as far as Fleet Street was concerned. Most of the Press couldn't be bothered reading that report from beginning to end nor could they be bothered critically examining its obvious deficiencies, contradictions and lack of logic. Instead the vast majority of British

journalists were only too eager to perpetuate the myth that the Alma Tunnel crash was a simple traffic accident caused by a temporary Chauffeur who was a hopeless alcoholic and was drunk when he crashed the Mercedes into a concrete pylon. Had they read Paget properly, as I did, they would have very quickly realised there is simply no credible evidence to demonstrate that Henri Paul was legally over the blood alcohol limit for driving a car. It was far too easy and convenient for everyone to blame a dead man. If you take a close look at Paget, Henri Paul doesn't need to defend himself. The total lack of evidence speaks volumes even if he never can. In my view, the efforts by the authorities in the cases that I examined can be equated with trying to fit a square peg into a round hole and failing miserably. Instead of letting the facts speak for themselves, the investigating authorities tried to make the facts fit a preordained scenario. The harder they tried the more absurd it became. But if you take away a simple accident as the primary cause then the investigation must move in a completely new and different direction, and that opens a whole new can of worms. For example the crash of the Arrow Air chartered jet in Gander Canada, which resulted in the deaths of 256 people, most of them American peacekeeping soldiers returning home from the Middle East. Despite all of the evidence and all of the eyewitness testimony pointing to an on-board, mid air explosion, the official conclusion was that ice on the wings led to the crash. It was a ludicrous conclusion. If the authorities had investigated this crash in the way they should have, at the very least the Iran-Contra affair would have been uncovered much earlier. Fortunately there were members of

the Canadian Air Safety Board with enough courage and integrity to refuse to accept the ice on the wings theory even though these dissenting voices paid a heavy personal and professional price as a direct consequence.

troubling. What have they got to hide? Maybe everything. Finally there is French Government complicity in a genocide that is on par with the Nazi holocaust during the Second World War. The mass slaughter of almost one million innocent Rwandan men, women and children, lasted 100 days. It was a crime against humanity. And there is strong evidence that France helped to trigger this catastrophe. But the French Government of President Francois Mitterand did its best to blame the present Rwandan Government and its President Paul Kagame. It's taken 20 years to finally get to the bottom of who might have assassinated the Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana, which gave the green light to the genocide, even if we still don't know the precise identities of the assassins.

Similarly, there was a failure to conduct a post mortem examination on Pope John Paul I who had one of the shortest reigning Papacies in the history of the Catholic Church. There were strong suspicions that the Pope had been murdered and there was strong evidence to suggest that the body had been moved after death. It was also clearly apparent that other important evidence had been covered up. Why would the Vatican not be interested in doing everything possible to investigate the Pope's untimely demise after only 33 days in the job? Especially, if by doing so, the investigation pointed to a crime being committed? The official explanations for what Instead the Vatican did the exact happened in these five case studies opposite. simply wasn't credible. And that is never a good thing. MONEY MANAGEMENT

HOW TO OVERCOME FINANCIAL HARDSHIP A financial hardship can bring extreme emotional trauma, as it threatens one's survival, security, and sense of belonging. Professional financial therapists help people understand the emotional concerns associated to problems in money management. It's a good thing there are ways to regain control over your own emotions, as well as your money, by considering the following tips: 1. Confront the guilt and shame. These two feelings are very common when individuals make major financial blunders, such as accumulating enormous credit card debt. Some people fee that they have been a big failure.

ple from discovering their financial situation, the simple admission to someone about the financial failure could be liberating. Often, this admission is enough to start letting go of the shame. Talking to a financial planner can be greatly helpful.

2. Focus on behaviour. Some people who've endured tough financial situations rebuke certain financial tools and swear never to use them again. For instance, an individual who accumulated credit card debt might decide to not use a credit card ever again. But the card isn't the problem, it is the use of the credit card that gets people into big trouble. In reality, if used wisely, credit cards While many people do a lot could even save people of things to keep other peo- money through purchase pro-

tection, rewards, and other bonuses. One good solution to this is by modifying your behaviour so financial products won't become a curse but a great blessing. 3. Take responsibility. It is essential to closely look at factors that caused the problem. The actions of other people or even bad luck might have played a role, however in most cases, there were times when one could have altered the course of events. Perhaps you took shortcuts or unreasonable risks, or yielded to the desire for materials things or to social pressure. Once you acknowledge any role you may have played in the development of your financial struggles, you can empower yourself towards a

better future. If your own choices was powerful enough to ruin your finances, they're also powerful enough to improve and fix them. 4. Develop new habits. It is not enough to merely say you are going to alter your money behaviour. In order to cope with financial hardship, some habits should be changes or eliminated. This will pay off emotionally and financially. Implementing certain rules like saving 10% or 15% of your monthly salary or fully paying credit card bills every month will be very helpful and make a safety net that will cause you to feel significantly less worried if financial hardships emerge again.

Gaza's NeverEnding War I've been trying to wrap my head around the most recent conflict in Gaza. Or, rather, the most recent escalation of the seemingly endless conflict in that region. It doesn't seem like the Israelis will accept anything other than total capitulation from Hamas. Hamas has absorbed a horrific loss of civilian life in pursuit of its goal of an independent Palestinian state. It's day one of a supposed 72-hour cease-fire as I write this. Over 2,000 Gazan civilians - including nearly 400 children - have been

killed... so far... ...A British foreign minister resigned because her government refused to condemn Israel's “disproportionate” response to Hamas missile attacks. Meanwhile, the U.S. allocated $225 million more dollars for Israeli missile defenses. I understand those who unconditionally support Israel, but I can't understand how the growing civilian body count in Gaza advances the cause of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu...

ENIGMA

...Since his election in 2009, Netanyahu has consistently blocked Palestinian efforts to achieve nationhood. Instead, he has taken Israel down a path of confrontation that has climaxed with this most recent bloodshed. Critics say Netanyahu has provided Israel's enemies with more ammunition to attack Israel than any prime minister since Menachem Begin. Begin's ill-advised invasion of Lebanon in 1982 shredded his reputation as a Nobel peace prize recipient...

hard time claiming the moral high ground in Gaza. The mounting civilian casualties are an indication that Netanyahu and his government place less value on Arab lives than they do on Israeli lives. Hitler's mass genocide against Jews in Europe sparked the postWorld War II sympathies that helped Israel achieve statehood. Will a post-Netanyahu backlash similarly help create the “two nation” world that Hamas is aiming for? Time will tell...

...Netanyahu's aggressive stance in the latest conflict leads many to believe that no lasting peace can be achieved while he is in control. Like I said, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the recent Gaza conflict. I understand how Israel would be reluctant to deal with Hamas, which has repeatedly been linked with terrorism. But a Hamas government was elected in Gaza. And at a time when some pundits in Israel are advocating genocide and concentration camps (both editorials in the Israeli press were quickly taken down from the internet), the Israelis have an increasingly

...I'm not sure what a reasonable compromise in Gaza would look like. It might even be an impossibility. But the current level of violence seems unsustainable. Netanyahu might be gearing up for an all-out ground invasion of Gaza. Hamas is said to be preparing waves of suicide bombers. There has to be a better way. I just wish I could find a way to even imagine it...

EDINBURGH, Scotland — A Thomson Airways flight from Tunisia to Edinburgh was diverted to London after a drunken passenger allegedly attacked crew members with her prosthetic leg. The woman told the flight crew that she wanted “cigarettes and a parachute.” When they asked her to hush up, she allegedly slapped a little girl and then started

She was off her face on drink,” said witness John Smith. “She slapped a young girl and then assaulted the cabin crew with her prosthetic leg. MIDLOTHIAN, IL - The driver of a red Mustang in Midlothian, IL flagged a police car down. When police approached the car, they observed two nude women - one with an eye swollen shut - and a naked transgender woman. The three told police that a man inside a room at a local fantasy motel had struck one woman after it was discovered the third woman was transgender. Police instructed the three to get dressed, and they then returned to the hotel room to discuss the incident with the two men involved. One of the men, who described himself as a club promoter, said he and his friend contacted the three others on the Internet and agreed to pay them each $75 to all have sex together. The five people involved met up at a club in Markham before relocating to the Midlothian club. One man said he was lying in bed with one woman when the other two people and his friend

decided to hop in the Jacuzzi. That’s when his friend realized the third woman was transgender. The man in the hot tub said he tried to leave, but the woman began to hit him because she was angry she wasn’t going to get paid, according to the police report. That man told police he fled to his car and locked his doors. The women denied they were prostitutes and told police they all met at the club and agreed to go to the hotel to have sex together without payment. The other woman told police the second man attacked her associate without being provoked. Police released all five without charges due to their conflicting stories. Judy Jones was charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault after she allegedly nearly killed her husband by cutting his throat from ear-toear. It’s believed that the husband would have died if Jones’ 16-year-old daughter had not called 911 immediately and summoned emergency help. The couple’s daughter reportedly told investigators that her mother had been planning the covert attack for about a year. “He’s got stitches from almost (ear to ear) so we just have to wait for it to go through the court system,” Abdalla said.

PITTSBURGH, PA. - It is true that love is a battlefield, especially in Pennsylvania where naked women run around the streets stabbing each other. Now that is how you start a story. Allegheny County Housing Authority police were trying to identify a naked woman who allegedly slashed or stabbed three other women in an apparent lovers’ quarrel at a public housing complex...because where else would something like that happen? Police did not immediately release the names of any of the other women involved in the incident. Chief Mike Vogel says one woman accompanied by one friend and another woman accompanied by two others clashed on the street...sort of like a lesbian West Side Story. That is when the naked woman became involved, dashing into the fray out of nowhere like a psychotic Zorro, swinging like crazy and whipping her knife around too. Police planned to charge the five women who met to fight, as well as the naked woman - though none of the other women would identify her. Two women were treated at hospitals for stab or slash wounds.

Sarah McLachlin Continues to Shine On

Sarah McLachlin came to Chastain Park Amphitheatre. I can’t help to get a little choked up these days when I hear her music. No, it doesn’t move me but every time that commercial for the ASPCA comes on with those sad dogs and cats on there looking for a forever home, I have to either change the channel or at least mute it. For one, the commercial is so damn long. The other, is I’m a sucker for cats and dogs. I am a proud “par-

ent” of two rescues – who literally showed up on my doorstep over ten years ago and before I came to the office today I gave them a loving rub along the knap of their necks. Yep, I’m a proud sucker for a cat especially. In fact, if it was up to me I would only associate with my cats instead of humans. They have brought untold amounts of joy since they’ve been a part of my life. If women were actually more like cats – at least my two, I’d probably be married. But I digress… ENIGMA

When my guy friends heard I was going to Sarah McLachlin I caught grief. They teased me about getting in touch with my inner woman. She of course was famous back in the day for launching the female empowering tour “Lillith’s Fair” that featured only female artists and a dominant female audience. One of my other politically incorrect friends referred to it as “Lesbian Fair”. Me and a majority of guy friends are proudly politically incorrect.

That being said I did not know what to expect for McLachlin in concert s this was my first time to see her live. McLachlin performed the entire night without an opener. It was an intimate night with Sarah. The Canadian songstress performed two sets of quality and at times surprisingly high-energy music. She forewarned to crowd after opening with “Flesh and Blood” from her newly released Shine On that she was going to introduce them to a number of her newest songs, but not to fear,

she would play some oldies as well. She then performed “Building a Mystery” one of her more well-known songs. The sellout crowd was excited. She then sang another song off of 1997’s Surfacing, “Aida”. During her two sets se moved effortlessly between guitar and piano. The willowy vocalist interspersed her new material with her classics keep a good and well-orchestrated balance. The more mature crowd that

was in attendance were literally Flesh and Blood Building a Myster hanging on her every word. In Your Shoes McLachlin finished her second Adia set with “Possession” that hails Answer back to 1993’s Fumbling Towards Broken Heart Ecstasy. After a brief minute Fallen she and her four-piece backing World on Fire band performed a four song Loving You Is Easy encore beginning with 1998’s Monsters “Angel” and finishing the night Stupid with “The Sound That Love Makes” from her newest.
