Why Robin? Why? When the news broke Monday I posted this sentiment on social media. I asked the Lord instead of Robin Williams, could he have taken a Kardashian, Courtney Stodden, Snooki or any number of pseudo-celebrities out there instead. Robin Williams is dead at the age of 63 – because of his own doing. Many will criticize the legendary comic and actor for being a coward and taking his own life. And while I want to be mad at him for doing so, I feel bad for him and those close to him. Ironically at times I felt close to him; as he was a very “out-there” person that held no punches and let it all hang out. One never knew what would come out of his mouth. He has been parody in pop culture for his machine gun speed rants on shows like “Family Guy” for example. That parody was so wrong and so right you couldn’t help but laugh out loud as I did and for that matter when Williams himself would go off on similar tangents during live TV and interviews.

time again because she was unable to care for him or his brother. Chaplin went on to become one of the first true comic icons of the movies as “the tramp” or “little fellow”. Chaplin suffered depressive bouts through his life and went out of his way to take care of his mother after success came. Chaplin, for a lack of better way of putting it was also a pedophile by today’s standards. His first wife Mildred Harris was 18 when they married. His second, Lita Grey was 14 when they initially “hooked up”. Their divorce was gossip fodder for a long

Another silent comic great Buster Keaton suffered from alcoholism. During the late teens through the end of the silent era, Keaton along with Chaplin and Harold Lloyd ruled the box office. All three – and usually just Chaplin and Keaton are almost always mentioned in the same sentence.

Like all great artists, he was a tortured soul and it got the best of him. This is especially evident in comedy where tragedy often gives birth to great humor. If you look at the history of cinema tragedy and really bad times are behind most of our greatest icons. Charlie Chaplin was raised in extreme poverty and was taken away from his mother time and

Keaton suffered from alcoholism and was sent to a sanitarium a few times in the 1930s and beyond as he had trouble dealing with the introduction of sound to movies. Sound pretty much killed many silent stars such as Keaton, John Gilbert – whose story the Academy Award winning “The Artist” is

loosely based, Harold Lloyd, Harry Langdon, Clara Bow and many others saw their careers nosedive thanks to sound. Keaton did not fare well. He went from being a top box office draw with some of the highest grossing feature films of the era to small independent short comedies in the ‘30s before his career completely crashed. During the early ‘60s there was a brief revival as compilations of his work came out and he started getting small roles in movies and even the “Twilight Zone” where he was allowed to be his old self as the show was filmed partially like a silent movie – once again for nostalgia’s sake. He died of a heart attack in 1965 before he could take full advantage of the new interest in him. Again, another tortured artist who made everyone smile while hiding the pain inside.

Pryor is a textbook case having been raised in a brothel and sexually abused as a child. One of the first counterculture breakout stars of his era with his foul language and at times racist taunts he dealt with alcohol and cocaine addiction – almost killing himself in 1980 when he suffered third degree burns over a vast majority of his body while freebasing. He later admitted the incident in which he had poured 151 proof rum over himself running down the street literally on fire was attempted suicide. He recovered and his career recovered, but Pryor was never really the same. Too many demons once again. His life was littered with racist taunts and accusations, anger management issues and runins with the law over weapons, drugs, you name it. But the culture had changed since the days of Lenny Bruce. Instead of being arrest, he was coddled by the media, law enforcement and the general public. He was made a “hero”.

Fas forward to modern times there was Lenny Bruce who died before his time. Bruce, controversial for his humor at the time laid the blueprint for the comedy of George Carlin, Richard Pryor and many of Then in the mid 1970s there was today’s more cutting-edge comics. was disturbed. But ironically that is what we loved about the man. His death was ruled suicide by asphyxiation as he hung himself late Sunday night. I know nothing on what depression does to one’s mind. They always say fame, money, love, etc. doesn’t cure depression. That was obviously true for Williams. However, he had a number of textbook cases amongst his peers and those that influenced his comedy and acting that it would have been nice if he had studied them and seen if it could have helped him deal with his crippling depression. Well all like to think, “If only I could have talked to him…” Unfortunately it’s not that simple. Most artists and creative souls are somewhat tormented. That’s what makes us special (I’m even including myself here).

it’s cancellation after only one season. He was his off-the-wall self. So manic, so crazy… so funny I had to watch. It’s hard to believe it had been over 35 years since I saw him on TV for the first time. I still have a copy of “People” with his picture featured in the “Ones To Watch Section”. I was all about Robin Williams. And even though I never really watched many of his films, I took a real affinity to his more serious roles that if you look at them now, kind of dealt psychologically with his issues – that of being alone and abandoned. Too bad no one was paying attention to what was going on in this quirky little way. Unfortunately we are now speaking of Robin Williams in past tense. We all have our memories of his career. It’s no use to get mad, cry or whatever. He is gone forever in the present world. Fortunately we have ways to relive a number of his moments thanks to film, television, audio recordings, print publications and the internet.

I have been fortunate enough to speak with, break bread, and even hangout with some of the greatest comics of our generation and before – everyone from Tommy Chong, Tim Conway and Gallagher just to name a few. MONEY MANAGEMENT

IT'S ALL JUST BASIC MATH It was my mother who sat me down to show me the correct way to fill out a check register. I remember as if it was just a few weeks back although it's been over forty years. As far as I was concerned it was Mom's money and it had all better add up to the penny. Over and over again, using an outdated checkbook connected to an account that no longer existed, my mother would impress upon me the importance of keeping receipts for every purchase and then later comparing it all to my bank statements. I cannot express how important it is that you know where every penny has gone. It's almost easier to view your life as a singularity with the idea that you personally are a Stand Alone Business. The debit and credit in and out of your bank account is a debit or credit of you. In reality it's

all just basic math. The real problem exists because most of us are too lazy to discipline ourselves and keep track of our own spending habits. So many people profess to want more out of life, yet it is usually this same group who at one point wished for and then worked for an income at a specific dollar amount. However, once that goal is obtained, the current income amount quickly seems to fall short in the eyes of the earner. So let's look at a few basic principles that can help you get the most out of what you have. CHECK REGISTER: If you have a checking account with a bank than at some point you were issued a register along with your new checks. Check Registers are very easy to use and come with simple instructions. The key is to fol-

low through and actually use the tool the bank provided. For some the print on a check register may be too small to see comfortably with ailing eyes and that's OK. One source you could use is a Bookkeeping ledger that can be purchased at a place like Office Depot or Staples. They're bigger than a standard check register and can be purchased with multiple columns depending on what you need. I always prefer multiple columns because it helped in keeping track with multiple sources of income. Although a ledger has a much deeper use for bookkeeping, it may be easier for some to use this tool the same as you would the little check register that came in the mail with your new checks.

es online. All you're doing is adding and subtracting so a full on bookkeeping class may be overkill but the basics should be a priority. Of course if you want full on bookkeeping training it can only help you. PC PROGRAMS: For the computer savvy, there are plenty of programs available like Quicken or Microsoft Money. These are great for keeping track of your spending as well as helping you plan for savings, organizing bills and so much more.

If you are trying to manage a business or a household even if you're the only one in it, it is important that you know where every cent goes and that you do not spend more than you take in. Who Runs Our Country? Politicians don’t run our country. The people and corporate interests who own our politicians run our country. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve typed those words in a column, I’d have a nice stack of dollars. But, honestly, my observation was based purely on a gut-level feeling based on many years of frustration. As it turns out, a recent study confirms my fears...

University analyzed survey data on 1,779 national policy issues. They examined the preferences of economic elites, “mass-based interest groups,” business-dominated interest groups and “average citizens” to determine each group’s influence on policy outcomes (including policies that are adopted or rejected). The results, while not entirely surprising, were a bit scary...

…The study, “Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups, and Average Citizens,” will be formally released in the fall 2014 edition of “Perspectives on Politics.” Authors Martin Gilens of Princeton University and Benjamin Page of Northwestern

...Gilens and Page found that, compared to the power of economic elites and organized interest groups, the influence of ordinary Americans registered at a “non-significant, near-zero level.” Their study also showed that rich individuals and business-dominat-

ed interest groups dominate the policy-making process, while mass-based interest groups had negligible influence compared to the business-based interest groups... ...For those who insist that the policy preferences of business interests and the wealthy often reflect the views of common citizens, the study offered evidence to the contrary. It found that such preferences are typically sharply different... and that, when they are, the interests of the economic elites and business groups almost always win and ordinary Americans lose. Citing the limitations of tapping into the opinions of America’s power elite and their policy preferences, the authors say that “the real world impact of elites upon public policy may be still greater” than their study indicates. Ultimately, Gilens and Page conclude that “economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on U.S. government policy, while average citizens and mass-based interest groups have little or no independent influence.” And average citizens don’t help their interests when they choose not to vote... ...America’s voter turnout rate is among the lowest among industrialized democracies. Over 90 million eligible citizens did not vote in the 2012 presidential election and over 120 million failed to vote in the 2010 midterm elections.

ENIGMA

Voter turnout in the U.S. is also correlated with economic standing. More affluent Americans vote in much higher proportion than those less affluent. A study by Ellen Shearer of Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism found that 59 percent of 2012 voters earned $50,000 or more per year (far from “wealthy”) compared to 39 percent of non-voters. Only 12 percent of non-voters earned over $75,000 per year, compared to 31 percent of voters... ...Ordinary Americans have to vote to have even a chance of escaping the “non significant, near-zero level” impact they currently have on government policy. The economic elites and the business-based special interest groups financially support political candidates from both parties. They back the Political Action Committees (PACs) that pump even more money into elections and issues-based campaigns. Then, once “their candidates” (and they’re all “their” candidates, in the long run) get elected, they hire lobbyists to further advance their interests. The deck is stacked against the average citizen. The game is rigged. And our politicians steadfastly refuse to pass campaign and lobbying reforms that might give additional influence to ordinary Americans. Knowing this in my heart was bad enough. Seeing a study that confirmed my worst fears has left me sick to my stomach...

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (UPI) - A woman who allegedly swiped a bag of Raisinets from a Cumberland Farms store in Florida felt that the candy caper was justified because she is a “God.” Nancy Mullis was allegedly seen taking a $2.99 bag of Raisinets and then leaving the store. Once she was outside, the suspect “flaunted the stolen property at the store clerk.” The 52-year-old was given a trespass

warning and a court summons for theft. The candies made their way back onto the shelves at the store. Later on in the day, Mullis went to a Discount Family Dollar and caused a scene. “Mullis was waving her arms wildly and cursing,” TC Palm reported a court affidavit as saying. “Mullis was stating that she was a god and could do what she wanted.” Apparently what Mullis wanted to do was flip over a newspaper stand and knock items off of shelves at the store. Eisemann was charged with grand theft. ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - It started with the New Jersey police officer who kicked a citizen out of a public building, citing his reasoning for the expulsion being that if Obama doesn’t have to obey the Constitution, he doesn’t either. That little gem was actually caught on camera. Now in North Carolina police have apparently arrested a man for beating them in a donut-eating contest. The Elizabeth City man celebrated out-eating the police officers, only to find out that he couldn’t outrun them. 24-yearold Bradley Herbert Hardison was arrested one day after he won the adult division of a doughnut-eating contest at the Elizabeth City Police Department’s National Night Out Against Crime. Hardison ate eight doughnuts in 2 minutes, beating a group that included local police officers and firefighters. Oh, the Camden County Sheriff’s Office SAID they had been looking for Hardison in connection with two break-ins, but Sheriff Tony Perry admitted that noth-

ing was taken during these “break-ins”. And, of course, couldn’t explain why a man would show up at a Police donut-eating contest the day after committing so-called crimes in that very same neighborhood. In addition to the Camden County charges, Hardison is charged with felony larceny and breaking and entering, because humiliating cops at the one thing they do best (other than setting up speed traps) isn’t a crime. CITRONELLE, Ala. (UPI) - Vietnam War veteran Phillip McMullen likely saw some bad things during his time in the service, but what he saw when returned to his Alabama home ranks right up there. McMullen came back to his Citronelle residence after visiting some friends out of town and discovered that his home had been burglarized. The gun safe at McMullen’s house had been damaged, but it wasn’t broken into. The same could not be said for the plastic box which held his deceased wife’s ashes. “They even took my wife’s ashes off my headboard, strewed them around, looked like they tried to smoke some of them or something,” McMullen told FOX10 News. “I bet that was a nasty taste when they (did) that.” McMullen and his wife were mar-

A store manager followed Sandra Thomas into the parking lot of a South Euclid Walgreens after he allegedly saw her place items in a shopping bag and then leave without paying. When the manager asked Thomas for a receipt, the 51year-old could not produce one for the $140.47 worth of items. The suspect started heading back to the store with the manager and police were called — then things got a little grimy. “Thomas told him that she had to use the bathroom badly when she suddenly pulled down her pants and defecated in the front of the store,” the News-Herald reported. She took off and when police tracked her down, Thomas told them she was having health problems, “again pulling her

pants down.” After being taken to a bathroom, Thomas was placed in a cruiser. She then allegedly told police she had bed bugs. Thomas was charged with theft and disorderly conduct. LONG ISLAND, N.Y. - It seemed like the perfect crime. You have a few drinks, maybe smoke a little dope, and then steal a snake. Who would ever expect a person high on dope to steal a snake? No one, that’s who. But no plan is fool-proof, as the perpetrator of this particular herpetological heist learned. Authorities say a New York woman who crashed her car into a Long Island fire house was found to be in possession of marijuana - and a stolen snake. Nassau County police say 22-year-old Sarah Espinosa, of Albany, was driving on Jericho Turnpike when she crossed the median and collided with a vehicle. They say she continued through the front door of the New Hyde Park fire house and hit two fire trucks. Fire personnel found that the small ball python she had stolen had wrapped itself around her neck. Authorities say the snake was stolen from a nearby pet store before the accident. Espinosa was arraigned on charges including petit larceny, reckless endangerment and driving while intoxicated.

A new Nielsen report, “Listen Up: Asian-American Consumers and Music,” details a multi-cultural group that spends more on music and that adopts musicrelated technologies faster than the population at large. Nielsen’s new report says AsianAmericans spend more on music than the average American consumer by a margin of $112 to $105. They spend more on live music — $44 per person each year — than any other multicultural segment of the population. The $19 they average on annual CD purchases is $6 more than the national average. They also spend twice the national average on music gift cards. A previous Nielsen report released in December called AsianAmericans “affluent, well-educated, geographically-concentrated and technologically savvy.” Their households earn and spend above the national average, they’re more likely to make online purchases and they adopt technology faster than any other segment of the population. Some Things Never Really Change, Like James Taylor - And That’s A Good Thing

Looking like someone’s uncle dressed in a button-down collar shirt and jacket, James Taylor unassumingly took the stage at the Verizon Wireless Center at Encore Park to a full house. He settled himself on his stool, where he remained most of the night except for an excursion to the keyboards and enthralled the crowd of baby boomers.

Soft-spoken and insightful, despite being 66 years of age, Taylor has that same twinkle in his eyes as when he became a household name in the early ‘70s. The crooner entertained the full house for three hours as he played songs from his debut release in 1969 to new material. “The new stuff kind of sounds like the old stuff,” he joked with the crowd. a good observation or confessional on his part. The newer material did have a familiar sound without being redundant and was as comfortable as the jacket he was wearing appeared. Taylor is an interesting individual if you do any research. Known for his songs of love and peace, it was the opposite of his early struggles. His

first album, James Taylor was released on Apple Records. Taylor holds the distinction of being the first non-British artist on the Beatles founded label. From his late teens through his early 20s Taylor dealt with addiction problems. His heroine addiction did not allow him to promote James Taylor and despite positive reviews did not fare so well despite one of the

singles becoming one of his standards over the years (“Carolina In My Mind”). His breakthrough came in 1970’s Sweet Baby James and the single “Fire and Rain”. Since then the singer/songwriter has amassed five Grammys and was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. His eight-year marriage to Carly Simon was referred to a pop royalty tying the knot as they both put out some of the greatest music of that generation during this time.

changed since we learned who James Taylor was. The one consistent has been Taylor’s voice and his writings. He proved that to the crowd in Alpharetta, his first visit to the Atlanta area since 2011. He didn’t disappoint. He began the night with “Something in the Way She Moves” before introducing the crowd to the newer “Today, Today, Today”. The original crooner played two sets of songs finishing the night with “Your Smiling Face” before coming out for a three-song encore of “How A lot has changed since the Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by 1970s. This is the do or die year for Tennessee starter Jake Locker. After a tremendous college career he looked to take over for Vince Young but injury after injury has caused him to lose considerable time including half of 2013. He wasn’t offered an extension on his contract this year part due to a new coach and part to inconsistent play, which honestly

isn’t all his fault. Locker played the first half but the at times torrential rains hampered the offense’s ability to do much. “Well, I kept hoping that the weather would get a little bit better so I could see him do some of the stuff in the pocket that I wanted to see. At that point, it wasn’t. Then, I got to the point where I wanted to get him out, so that’s what we did,” said Whisenhunt. The weather was so bad in fact that the Packers decided to bench starters Aaron Rodgers, Eddie Lacy and altogether eight starters in all because of the conditions. The half ended with the Packers ahead by one point on a missed extra point by new kicker Maikon Bonani. Locker completed only one of two passes he threw for a

Packers’ seven. Jackie Battle took it over for the go ahead and eventual winning score on the next play. “Yeah, it’s exciting. It’s preseason but everybody in that locker room is a competitor and wants to win. So to have an opportunity at the end like that to win and watch those guys go out and do it was awesome. I’m excited for them, happy for them. A lot of them it’s their first opportunity to play in an NFL game and to watch them go out and have success like that is fun, “ said Locker. The Titans are on the road this week as they travel to the Big Easy to take on the New Orleans Saints on Friday.

2014 FALCONS ALREADY AHEAD OF LAST YEAR’S TEAM

One game into the 2014 preseason and already the Atlanta Falcons are far ahead of last year’s team many thought would go to the Super Bowl. The Falcons are now 1-0 after holding off a late rally by the Miami Dolphins to win their first preseason game since 2012. That’s right. Although coach Mike Smith doesn’t win many preseason games in his time here, using the time to evaluate players and not compile meaningless wins. However after a 4-12 regular season, his and Matt Ryan’s only losing campaign in Atlanta, you learn to love little things especially when they come after only one week.

The Falcons have had the best offense in the league the last couple of seasons, but defense has been their Achilles. This season is defensive coordinator Mike Nolan’s third year at the helm and the outcome will decide his fate from this day forward. To his advantage, he has been able to weed out most of the players he inherited that don’t go well with his schemes. Nolan is a 3-4 guy and the Falcons have been a 4-3 team forever. Coach Smith likes the 4-3 as well but will give Nolan a chance to run more 3-4 schemes this season. And it couldn’t come at a more crucial time. The defense, hampered by ENIGMA

Dolphins to hold on for a 16-10 win. “They’re looking good. They got those first-game jitters out quick. On a couple of plays, they were in there making plays like they do in practice. Like I was telling them, ‘Just approach it like it’s practice.’ It’s a little more pressure because it’s a game, you want to impress the coaches. If you treat it like a practice, do your techniques, do your job, you’ll be fine. That’s what they did,” said second year cornerIf Friday is any indication, things back Robert McClain. do look improved. The front line suffered however, as injuries to key players, underperforming free agent picks saw the fewest number of sacks in quite some time and a running defense that could not stop anyone.

7-0 lead. Third year starter Ryan Tannenhill looked calm and polished in the pocket in his first action as he completed all six pass attempts for 62 yards. Tannenhill finished the drive hitting Brandon Gibson from six yards out for the score. A much more mature looking offense for Atlanta took over keeping the ball for over nine minutes as Matt Ryan was a perfect 7-for-7 as well. Jaquizz Rodgers went over left tackle to even the score at 7. The Atlanta revamped offensive line was impressive in their first outing. After giving up 44 sacks of Ryan last year the Falcons new line featuring top draft pick Jake Matthews kept Ryan along with TJ Yates and Sean Rentfree upright the entire game. “We’re growing as a unit. As an O-line, we’re communicating well. I think Coach (Mike) Tice is getting us all

on the same page and getting us to play together really well. That’s our No. 1 goal is keeping Matt (Ryan) clean, keep the quarterbacks clean in this case in the preseason. If we can do that, that’s a huge plus,” said center Joe Hawley.

later he broke free for a 76-yard touchdown only to have it called back as well. “Antone had some very explosive plays. Antone’s a guy that can do some things when we get the ball in his hands. we had to make a play. They had a fumbled snap, which helped out, but we were playing hard. There’s some little things we need to clear up, stuff like that, scheme-wise, mental errors and all that kind of stuff, but we were running around, hitting. Play hard and good things will happen,” said safety Sean Baker. “It’s always good to win. We’re all competitors and we all want to win. We don’t want to lose regardless, whether it’s preseason or regular season. It’s good to get that win and start off on the right foot,” said McClain. The Falcons take to the road for this week’s preseason game. They travel to Houston to take on the Texans Saturday before returning home on the 23rd to face the Tennessee Titans.
